Amazing vista! Thanks so very much for sharing this. I spent many many happy hours walking Butterfly back in the 70s. There used to be lots of seashells to play with. It was a fun beach to swim at, too. Seeing this beautifully colorized photo brings back intensely pleasureful memories of care-free times. Incredible how much the cliffs have eroded/fallen away since 1917.

Fanbloodytastique.... great find. 3623.... no colour film in those days, the prints were hand coloured with tints and dyes.

Wonderful to be able to see what my ancestors saw so long ago. . . (Great grandparents settled in Montecito circa 1900). Thanks for sharing this.

I remember when we used to be able to drive along there, but you can see the erosion even then.

Wow, this is gorgeous! I ride my bike from downtown to Butterfly on the new bike path often. This is a treat to see.

I was at the Planned Parent Book Sale at Earl Warren and there were books in the California, Santa Barbara section which has books of old pictures of the trolley system in Santa Barbara and Joe's Cafe, and of the courthouse. Neat to see these and other places in California in "the old days".

Actually they didn't really have true color film. I believe that this image was colored using a technique known as hand tinting. The technique was used to create color postcards back in the day.

The Montecito Association History Committee archives at the Montecito Library has many more photos and postcards from "back in the day" and WE NEED MORE. Please help us preserve history! We are open from 10AM to 2PM on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

I'm surprised that area was undeveloped as late as 1917. Probably too far out of town :-)
