I thought SBCC was an adult institution. Why are they acting like a crowd of maiden aunts.

They get the vapors when someone shows up with a toy.

I despair, I really do.

Any type of gun is not allowed on public school campuses......and he was warned once to put it away...but like a dumbass decided to take it out again to create a scene. Once is an error, twice is definitely a challenge.

It is an adult institution where students are supposed to behave as adults, and not bring their toys to school. I believe the conduct of SBCC was correct and calm.

When he came back the second time after security told him to put it away - and started mumbling about Jesus and Satan - somebody with SBCC should have called police.

Well said, 153P.

323160 - why? SBCC had taken custody of the gun, and disciplined the student according to SBCC rules. It was reported to the police the next day, and they took possession of the gun. What else did the police do? Nothing - the student had already been disciplined by SBCC.

When he came back a second time, someone with some cojones should have decked him and snapped the gun over his thigh and called it a day. But no, we have to turn everything into some drawn out drama fest and somebody's poor sensibilities might have gotten hurt.

72P Because someone in a psychotic state of mind messing around with play weapons and mumbling about jesus and satan might be a danger to the rest of the community, not just SBCC - not to mention that he might return.

160 - So what did the cops do the next day? It appears that the SBCC discipline stands, whatever that was.

SBCC is not the law. They can handle their security on site but doing something against the law still requires the police. It is very normal for SBCC to call the police as needed.

I thought that this was handled correctly. Sadly the student was attention seeking in the wrong way but fortunately, he got attention from the police and will likely be expelled from the school. Hopefully he will go away peacefully

This adds validity to those immortal words of Dickens -- "The law is an ass."

If someone would have called the cops when the guy at the movie theater was wearing a mask and acting strangely ... well.....

Julian, an airsoft gun can cause serous injuries. It's not a toy.

I'd rather a school err on the side of it's many students not acting like entitled than on the side of one who has a "toy" and is acting like a challenging jerk.

anyone brandishing a gun or facsimile should be arrested. the police should have been called. people like this do not 'go away quietly'.

I hope it wasn't a "trial run" (a la Columbine) to test SBCC response.
