I love dogs - and I love the off leash policy at Hendry's beach - but bringing in fire rescue, the police, and harbor patrol was a $25,000 afternoon for taxpayers.

While I agree that the all the responders ROCK!, I also agree that it was an expensive rescue for an untrained dog that perhaps shouldn't be allowed off leash. Hope the owner learns something from this experience.

Of course.....a Jack Russell (mix) :) Love them, but they do get into predicaments quite often! Glad he was safely rescued!

Glad that all ended well, but I am left to wonder who pays for this? Don't jump all over me because it is a valid question. Wasn't there something about this sort of thing in the SBNP awhile back?

While the fd needs practice, this dog got up there and would have come down in time. Not as if it fell from the top and was stranded. Not a good 911 call.

Well the Fire Dept is paid by our taxes whether they do something during the day or they are out all day doing rescues & fighting fires. I am sure that they were happy to get out in the community and the rescue made them feel good. It's part of what we pay our taxes for, why would it cost extra to the taxpayers for the city workers to work?

Not everything should be measured on its costs... So sick of people aligning money with public services as if its right out of their pockets... You're a member of a community, a city, a county, a state and a country. You pay taxes like everyone else (dont go there...). Its simply amazing and somewhat disheartening how everything is somehow a cost to the individual... Whatever happened to a sense of community involvement and civic responsibility? Oh yeah, we live in a culture of greed and selfishness... I personally think its because of the Me generation, but who knows for sure... its rampant and its disgusting.

The dog was scared and made a mad dash to get out of his perceived danger; has nothing to do with training. Our firemen are paid for their shifts whether they get any calls or not (my son is a firefighter). Who came up with the $25,000 cost, and why would it apply? Thankfully, everything ended well.

Is there a reason that Search & Rescue wasn't called in? They're free, they do cliff rescues all the time, and I know they rescue dogs on a fairly regular basis. Why not just call S&R?

@305- I think S&R wasn't called because they are County and Hendry's is in the City limits.

Owners should read a tide chart or better yet, why not post one in the kiosk at Hendry's? Owners's are suppposed to have voice control or treat or toy control as the other poster mentioned. Take time to find out what your dog likes and practice recall! Anticipate situations where your dog might get in trouble, big or little. Be in charge, be vigilant. If dogs were tested for voice control at Hendry's what percent would fail? I wonder if the reason owners don't call their dogs from interacting with everyone and everything there is because they can't? You should not be in off leash situations if you can't get your dog to come back to you.

I can not believe some of the ignorant bloggers on this site. To the misinformed guy who thinks firefighters "sleep all day", I believe the FD is going to be hiring again, but you probably won't make the cut (again) sorry. If you really want to know what they do, ask to go on a ride along. I did it a couple years ago and it was very interesting. BTW, the FD doesnt charge for its services.

I think it is very nice to live in a city where the FD and harbor patrol will rescue someone's stranded on a cliff dog. As others have already said these guys were on duty and probably felt good to help.

I'm going to side with the dog on this one. He is a member of the community as well so if he needed a hand I'm happy he got it. That being said I believe his owners need some more work on voice control and temperment evaluation. You should know what scares your dog and makes them want to bolt. You should also not take them into situations where this will happen. All dog owners should have voice control over their dogs before taking them off leash in public. This is basic safety for your dog. Last my cousin is a firefighter and I assure you he works hard for the money he makes. Whether he is on a call for something like this or risking his life to save people from burning to death. Yes they have 24 hour shifts and they do need to sleep during part of that shift. They cannot go home and sleep because they need to be right there ready should one of us need them.
