All the key intersections once had lights. Mission, Mitcheltorena, Carrillo, Castillo, State, Anacapa and Santa Barbara. In phases the Crosstown freeway project eliminated them. The North and Southbound traffic was routed up and down Santa Barbara and Anacapa Streets, respectively, during the fiesta parade. The restaurant that is now Rhino club was owned by John Kerry who also owned a restuarant where Copelands used to be. That freeway spot was called "Kerry's" (before Sambos came) and he offered 1/2 priced meals to all law enforcement officers. Consequently he seldom had any "dine and dash", robberies, drunks, etc. because there was almost always some law officers in there around the clock.

What will SBCC's "maximum disciplinary and legal action" be in this case? Denial of bubblegum privileges for a week?

The way SBCC handled this incident makes me concerned for anyone who attends class there.

It's not hate, 958. I believe SBCC Security does a great job. They always have.

For me, it's more than the leadership of SBCC is desperately concerned with its public reputation so much so that they would do almost anything it takes to protect it. And what really disturbs me about this is what I originally posted: Who is lying here? When were the police actually notified of the incident?

SBCC recently cut back on 24 hour security of its campus, yet has been very willing to spend money keeping adult ed classes free for seniors.

Why so hateful? Do you have a history with SBCC Security?

From the articles I've read it said it was clear it was an airsoft gun. Don't get me wrong, that doesn't mean brush this aside, just that luckily, the students had that little bit of relief when this person was acting unpredictable. If it is true, that campus security asked him to take it back to his vehicle, and he was found with it again, waving it in class, then the Police Department should have been called right away. At that point, this person had no respect for whatever authority campus security had, and may have been unstable enough to use anything as a weapon if given the chance. If security had any role at that point it could have been simply detaining the student until police arrived. He should have been taken in for observation at the very least.

EThis student sounds like he was having a psychotic break. Themes of religiosity and the devil are often prominent in psychotic delusions.

I hope this man got evaluated for mental health issues and not just criminal ones.

Not naive, 931, just not snarky. I edited my response (# 902) in order to leave out the sarcasm. But you may read it into it for accuracy.

SBCC will say whatever it needs to in order to keep its bland, Pollyanna-ish reputation intact. It is quite willing to risk students as well as staff in its effort to be perfect. That scares me.

To think that SBCC, SBPD or KEYT would tell the truth or take responsibilty about anything is naive.

They let campus security handle it? They should have called the cops and let them handle it. Wow - and then they delay reporing the situation until local media exposes the incident? I'm sensing somebody at SBCC is without a job next week.

I reported an incident before that occured at SBCC and it was pulled before this was when that gal was president the one they got rid of. One would think that a bunch of educated people would be smarter but they obviously are not. It seems like things are not taken seriously until someone snaps and kills a bunch of people. They should have called PD right away our police dept. knows how to handle these things.

Silly College doesn't answer to anyone in our community- They take ZERO responsibility for any impact their student body does when significant laws are broken- There should be consequences for dealing drugs, assaults or threats to other students. Have they ever expelled a student?

According to KEYT, either Santa Barbara City College is lying about notifying the police on Wednesday after the incident happened or they are calling the police liars for saying they weren't notified until Thursday after the news media contacted them about it. Why the discrepancy?

According to the last entry in this Channels article the gun was confiscated and an SBPD report filed almost immediately:

http://www.thechannels.org/top-stories/2012/09/21/gun-talk-in-class-scares-student/

Here is the entry:

2:45 pm Sept. 19
Staff in the Drama/Music Building alerted campus security that they escorted a student who was carrying a clear, plastic airsoft rifle out of the building. They told the student to put the rifle back into his vehicle. The student was not initially identified. Security received another call from the same staff at 2:15 p.m. stating that the individual was attending class in the same building. Two security officers responded, met with individual and discovered that he still had the airsoft rifle. The airsoft rifle was confiscated and individual was brought to Dean’s office. He was then escorted off campus and a report was made with SBPD. The airsoft rifle was turned over to the police department.

If he had shown up with a slingshot which also can do serious damage should the SBPD be notified? I think not, unless there was evidence that he was "off" as in this case and as they did notify.

This is just too weird? Why didn't SBCC security notify the SBPD immediately? Seems like that would be SOP to me? Yea airsoft guns are not real guns with live ammo but come on.... They can still can do damage.
