We bought gas at King's Canyon Lodge a couple of years ago. It was the most we have ever paid for a gallon of gas, but the experience of seeing how their really old gas pumps worked was worth the price. The road going from 6500 ft elevation down past the Lodge to the River and on past Cedar Grove is wonderful. It's a real exercise in contrasts in views, temperature, light, plant & animal life.

That lodge is something out of a film noir, but in a good way. Stayed there a couple nights, felt like we were on the lam. Tiny, er, cozy '30s cabins, oldest gas pump in the Western US (WW I vintage), restaurant/bar reeking with character and stuffed animals. Played pool under watchful gaze of a yellow-eyed coyote as a top-notch saw player who happened to be passing through worked his magic. Pool table, the saw, the coyote, the bartender and we, too, eventually, were all slightly warped, but isn't that why we get away?
