Becky, EVERY generation complains about the younger generation as they get older. There's nothing unique about kids today -- old people said the same thing about you when you were a kid. Now you're old, and you can't stand young people.

I AM happy to see the responses to my post being respectful. Thanks for elaborating a bit more and explaining more of the issues you have. I don't group myself as a traditional student and there are plenty that are rude and clueless, but lots that are respectful and not just living on someone's dime.

I used to work in that Albertsons when it was Lucky in the mid-90s. I would see students try to rip items off all the time, or eat foods and not pay for them. One day after my shift, I was in regular clothes, doing my grocery shopping. I observed a group of male students openly and repeatedly visiting the cookie aisle to partake of those yummy Partridge Farms cookies, right from the package. I guess they had the munchies but didn't want to "commit" to the whole package. They made no effort to conceal their theft, and figured that no one would call them on their behavior. I saw them in the checkout lane, and brought the partially eaten package up to them and said, "Oh, looks like you forgot to add this to your cart." They were dumbstruck, but they took it from me and bought it.

I went to UCSB, and then worked there for decades. I'm not being mean; I'm reflecting reality. For some odd reason, common sense and basic courtesy in young adults is way down. (Maybe it's way down in all age groups?) I'm not sure if their parents aren't doing the job, if they're too distracted with too many electronics, if they aren't being taught manner or to plan ahead, or what, but it is an experience that is so common place that _the checkers are warning the regulars about the coming problem_. The checker who warned me said she'd tried to get vacation because they were so rude and clueless that it drove her crazy. I was semi serious about teaching a "how to shop" course. I, and many, many others informally (and politely) do it most every fall. "Excuse me. Would you please step aside so I can pass?" etc.

I wnet to UCSB in the 60s. These are minor funny complaints compared to what we heard back in the day, especially from our then Governor, Ronald Reagan.

How sad that this community is being so nasty to students who come here to make this their home too. Why live near an area where thousands upon thousands of students have been for over 40 years? I agree there is a hassle involved with additional traffic and that summer was a nice break from the hustle & bustle, but UCSB is not a new campus and there are a lot of opportunities for these kids. One of them is LEARNING how to shop and be a responsible adult. Not all of us are young, dumb, and looking to hookup.

I always enjoy going to Bed Bath and Beyond this time of year because they carry lots of new and really neat stuff geared to the student needs and lifestyles!

You can always tell when UCSB is back in session. That part of the Highway becomes even more of a danger, especially near Ward Memorial offramp.

It will always amaze me how the students shopping at Albertsons can make a $50 cart of actual food in to so many transactions. Once watched 3 make it take 20 minutes and half a dozen+ transactions. One had to use a temp check because her debit card had not arrived and each time a supervisor had to okay. #1 Students A, B, & C shared items

#7 Student C The checker was ready to strangle the group and I don't think a single check was over $10 and anytime they shared they had to split the bill between them Thinking they were not math majors

BECKY you made me laugh out loud! I live near and shop at that Albertsons and have off and on over the last 30 years. It's always the same. Kids have the added distraction of cell phones and iPods now, tho. I know the feeling of being in an unfamiliar grocery store but I agree. It doesn't take 3 people standing in the middle of the aisle staring like deer in the headlights at the shelf. Have these kids never shopped before? Really?

822, thank for the laugh. So you work at UCSB, but don't like being close to the students. Reminds me of years ago when I worked at a grade school and the joke going around there was - This would be a great place to work if it wasn't for these darn kids.

Funny, I always enjoy interacting with the kids. Sometimes they just need a little help because it is the first time they are trying to do this. I am 72 and I think a sense of humor and a little patience goes a long long way - on both sides. Smile and they usually smile back.

The Checkers at Albertsons (University Plaza) were warning all the regulars about it this week. We all get our groceries before they arrive, or a few weeks later, and avoid Albertsons like the plague for the first 1-3 weeks they are here. I swear that one of these years I'll teach a "how to shop" course to these kids that centers on how not to piss off everyone else in the store. Don't stand in the middle of the isle, talking on your cell phone, oblivious to the world around you. Have some plan and idea of what you want. Be nice to the Checkers; you'll be seeing them repeatedly. Return the carts. It doesn't take 3 of you to decide on and buy one item. If you aren't over 21, don't try to buy booze. Etc., etc., etc.
