I just saw it too, right overhead, near downtown! Two smaller planes were on the left. After it went by, running to my balcony, I could see a big white thing on top of the plane. Cool.

I was hoping it was going to fly much lower than it did. Does anyone remember when a B-52 buzzed SB back in the late Seventies? That was a fly-over.

I wanted to wave to the pilots of the 747. I did anyway but I don't think they saw me.

Awesome!
I just saw the 747 with the Space Shuttle and a fighter jet escort fly over. Luckily I opted to bring my binoculars, but alas, forgot the camera.

While I'm not a huge fan of space exploration for the sake of colonization (hey, can't we just take care of the planet we have?!) I do think the space program represents the epitome of Human "can-do."

It was a grand moment to see avionic history fly by.
Goodness, those Wright Bros. must be proud!!!

This shuttle's name is actually Endeavour, with the British spelling, since it's named after HMS Endeavour, Captain Cook's ship on his first voyage of discovery.

Thanks to everyone who posted a picture. I heard it(on coast village road) and ran out, but missed it. I'm watching LA TV now. Folks are reacting the same way we did here. I used to work across the street from where the shuttle used to "reside" in Goleta and have always been fascinated by it.

Honestly, why all the fuss with a flyover of the Space Shuttle? It's only a speck in the sky now, yet soon, you can see it up close and perhaps walk inside at its new home in Los Angeles.

Hate to be a penny-pincher, but it seems like a waste of aviation fuel and tax payer money to fly it 5,000 feet overhead up and down the California coast to give everyone an "awe inspiring" view.

Where were you when the space shuttle flew over Santa Barbara? Are you really going to remember this event a day from now?

322742 - 'twas not up and down - merely down. It had to fly to LA anyway - why not let others share in its last flight. I saw the first (I think) piggy-back flight over Lompoc many years ago, and to see it today was like a bookend for me. And if any aviation buffs can correct me, the slower speed was probably more fuel-efficient.

I think "all the fuss" is both nostalgia and enthusiasm for our best and brightest moments. NASA represents real forward progress, exploration, hope, and belief in the future. We should continue to fund basic science, even as we downsize other areas of government for greater efficiency (and less nanny state intrusions).

It was quite awesome to watch and emotional. It reminded me of being a kid when I was raise to be "proud to be an American" and today, standing outside for a few minutes with all my co-workers, we were all proud. A group of International students walked by and stared at us, we pointed at the sky and they just looked at us as though we were crazy.

In this day and age, when you have the opportunity to simply walk outside, look up to sky, see history, feel your spine tingle, shed a tiny tear of pride and feel really good for a few moments....honestly, what could be better for your soul than that? Thank you NASA for letting us share in the final flight of Endeavour, I will remember.

750 for the win! A witty Joni Mitchell fan...what could be better??? And 754, you took the words right out of my mouth. I was headed to the tower at the Courthouse when it came directly overhead. What a thrill! I got a couple of good shots off, and you can bet that even though they aren't nearly as good as some of the images I've seen here, they are precious reminders of a wonderfully historic day in my life. I'm so glad NASA let us all share in the nostalgia and national pride of this historic event.

Observation: This is what it used to be to be Americans together. To be proud and to enjoy something we paid for. Something not absolutely mandatory, but something we all felt neat and inspired by, and that made us stop what we were doing to oh and ah. I hope we keep finding those experiences.

I didn't think I would be too excited when it came flying by, but count me in as one of those who were outside for 30 minutes waiting to catch a glimpse.

I think it is a great salute to the decades of American (and particularly SoCal) engineering that went into this endeavor (pun intended).

@742: I didn't get to see it fly over, but heck yeah I would've remembered it if I had. I still remember getting to see the Concorde SST take-off back in the mid-80's. That was LOUD! and VERY COOL!

I was disappointed that I had an important telephone appointment today that made getting out to see the Shuttle flyover impossible. LOVE the pics, though.

Haters are always going to hate (742) sad part about the internet is they now have a place to spew their junk. As a kid growing up in the '80's I remember every launch always being a big deal on TV, I remember hearing the sonic booms when the shuttle was coming in to land at Edwards, I remember being in 3rd grade and watching the Challenger disaster in my classroom and my teacher breaking down in tears, the rest of us didn't really grasp the enormity of that day.

So yes, going out yesterday to see the flyover and take pictures was a big deal for a lot of us, go ahead and wank about tax dollars, I'm going to think more about the age of discovery and space exploration and how as someone already said, it used to be something to bring us together as a country.

788 - That's exactly how I felt when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. I was in college at UCSB and working at a hamburger stand. An older coworker (...way old...like 21 :o) ) brought in a little black and white TV and we set it up on the counter in the kitchen and watched. Of course, we had no customers, everyone was home watching TV......I'll always remember where I was and what I was doing and how proud I was to be an American.....

COMMENT 322742 helpful negative off topic

Other than nearly everyone's rah-rah-rah for the shuttle fly-over and how-proud-I am-to-be-an-American-aren't-you and where- were-you-in-1969, etc, , no one has given me a better understanding about why the shuttle flyover.

I'm all for treasuring historic items like the Air Force One Boeing 707 at Reagan's Library, space capsules in the Air & Space Museum in D.C..

Wouldn't it be a better view to see the Endeavor from the sidewalk as it proceeds from LAX to its final resting spot? Or to take the amount spent on the 747's fuel flying up and down California and instead use it to insure free admission for all comers for a year to see the Endeavor up close?

Geez, folks, I'm not a hater. I just don't buy into how this show went down. And puh-leeze, don't get me started on all the trees that had to be cut down to get the shuttle to its new home. The neighborhood along the transportation route will remember the shuttle ground transport for the next 30 years....
