828 here: I would've called the police myself. I agree with the thrust of the complaint here. I did sound cavalier in my post. I also would have left the class. By "such is life," I mean that sadly, no one can stop or avoid such events. We were lucky this time.

828P: Yes, my one college-age child "sent" herself too, as did I send myself decades ago, so we've established that we're all wonderful and self-motivated adults. And since we're quoting (as well as nit-picking) here: "such is life?" Now, there's a plan for action and responsibility. Any reasonable person who _has_ kids would have some issue with the way this was initially handled although SBCC seems to be doing some PR- (or potential liability-) inspired backtracking now. Don't think anyone was calling for SWAT teams and lock-downs, just appropriate and responsible behavior on the school's part.

I studied acting in college. Many plays call for the use of gun: that's why there's the saying about the gun in the first act. It seems this guy thought he could get away with his gun and threats at school under the guise of theater. But there's a big difference between "acting" strange and acting strange. It sounds like the other students could tell this guy wasn't acting.

Yeah, I looked at that site, and those toy guns look pretty real. I am inclined to agree with 775, but I do think that student should have cleared the prop with his instructor and class 1st. If that was his intention. If he's not acting and is just intense and weird and religious fanatic...well....ummm...seriously, do we need a clue with that at this point?

775 and 785 are naive. Airsoft guns are not toys. Check out their website. This student should be expelled. http://www.airsoftmegastore.com/

Try taking a "toy gun" on an airplane and see what happens.

"Wouldn't send my kids there..."? I hope college-age kids send themselves, as I did. And yes, this could happen anywhere, and be much, much worse. I agree it is an issue, but such is life.

775 - Wow, some anger going on... These kids are not 5, even the person they interviewed from SBCC yesterday indicated that guns (of any type) are not allowed on campus, and I am sorry but what kind of a fool would bring any type of "toy gun" on a college campus; drama class or otherwise! get real!

I have to agree with 775. This WAS an acting class, although it sounds like the young man (not child) was getting a little intense. Also, airsoft guns are (by law) brightly colored with orange tips or made of entirely clear plastic to avoid confusion with real weapons. Second, some of these can barely knock down an empty can at 10 yards. Bringing in the SWAT team or closing campus due to an "excited" student actor with a toy gun would be overkill and a waste of taxpayer dollars. I'm sure SBCC considered the risks.

775: Neither of my kids goes there; it's a hypothetical. Yeah, make light of it. Clearly, you have neither kids nor a clue. Maybe someone with a toy gun who's acting crazy will show up at your home or work some day. Will likely be less of a laugher for you then.

Hey, it's an acting class and acting strange was only part of what the kid thought was required in class. To the helicopter parents in the peanut gallery: it was a toy gun and the kid didn't bring it to force a show down with law enforcement that would've got him killed and nobody was "shot at" with plastic pellets. Should the entire school have been shut down 'coz your little Johnny was on campus, perhaps as much as much as 1/4 mile away, over a toy gun? You're free to choose where your kid goes to school but to use this as an excuse to end his education only means you weren't thrilled about him/her going there in the first place.

738: I agree. This seems to be truly inept behavior, borderline criminal negligence , on the part of SBCC. If nothing else, such as the safety of students and staff, one would think that liability concerns would dictate a better response. Maybe no one's paying attention to all the guns and threats turmoil in the media. Wouldn't send my kid there after this.

Is this the typical protocol for SBCC? As a parent of a student at the school I am a bit surprised! I would think they would have called 911 and handled things a bit differently especially in light of things that have happened similar to this. Are SBCC "campus security" trained to handle such an incident and the fact that they escorted the person off campus in that state of mind makes you wonder if he now thinks this is acceptable and all he will get in removed from the campus? Apparently students received a "test" text message of their emergency system the day after this happened. Almost seems like SBCC is brushing it under the rug as if it wasn't that big of a deal!
