592 They cost thousands of dollars in street, sidewalk, plumbing, gas, and sewer repairs. There are many gorgeous trees that do not.

KSYB has a live video that seems to be a webcam, looking toward VAFB coast. Looks like it's about to come into view.

Those trees are Ficus trees and anyone who has one in SB wishes the Endeavor would go down their street, including me! Those residents get a free space shuttle show, and rid of the most annoying tree to have on one's property. If you love Ficus, it's most likely your neighbor's :)

I hope that someone posts when it goes over Vandenberg so we can start to watch for a possible sighting here in Santa Barbara.

The NASA "live feed" is not live. The shuttle just flew over Sacramento, so there is a significant delay in the schedule. It seems the best place to "watch" the shuttle is on Twitter. #spottheshuttle

A science and engineering giant could engineer a solution to the problem without destroying all the trees. The current solution (cutting down all the trees) seems to be the brainchild of a nation too lazy to face its problems, and too vain to see how wrong its actions are.

The science center is going to replace the trees 4 to 1... so relax people. We need kids interested in science to help rebuild this nation back into the science and engineering giant it was in the last century!!!

The trees are being replaced 2 for 1, but they're planting saplings, and it takes 30-40 years for a tree to reach maturity. Also, only a small fraction of the newly planted trees will actually survive to maturity. LA's going to look like a war zone, but it's ok. The people who live in the affected areas aren't white.

520: Yes, it does seem ridiculous to cut down trees but the Science Center has agreed to replace the trees 2 for 1: http://www.npr.org/2012/09/18/161170420/shuttle-endeavour-begins-long-voyage-to-new-home And the ground transportation costs are being paid through donations and fund-raising, not taxes.

I am glad they are doing the flyover - it gives everyone the opportunity to see something they might not otherwise. I am hoping that many schoolchildren will be outside and able to view this historic spacecraft. I hope it inspires a few of them to dream big and pursue careers in aerospace and science.

Seriously!? The Trees were cut down for this? I hope that there is more to that story for example "Those trees are diseased, let's use that street and replant as we were going to take them down anyway." If not...that is awful. Lately, I find myself asking "How does something like this happen?" with greater frequency. The bailout, stimulus package, Penn State, Obama and Janet Wolf elected and RE-elected. So much for Global warming. Where's Al Gore for the punctuation? That being said, if I am paying for it to fly over, I hope I get a chance to catch a glimpse!

492- Yes, not to mention cutting down many hundreds of mature street trees to truck it to the museum with the wings on. These are poor neighborhoods with little/no voice that are losing their shade trees. Imagine cutting all the street trees on ANY street in SB, it would never happen. It is interesting that this is only news on 'Democracy NOW'.

Its cool to have a space shuttle on display here on the west coast but what's the cost for an adventure like this? It's nice we have money to spend on things like this or $662 million to fix up the USS enterprise in 2009 even though it's gonna be decommissioned at the end of this year. I'm sure all those college students who can't afford to go to college anymore will be glad to have a space shuttle and soon another hunk of metal floating around in Coranado bay
