322 - Gov does not generate jobs - private sector creates them.
socialism is no way to break this funk that the economy is in. Down size gov - cut tax's - you will then see growth

The bad economy started long before the current adminstration.

I can only imagine that next people will complain about state money going to pave a highway they never intend to drive on. Grumble grumble grumble, MY tax money is being used by THEM for THEIR road! It must be nice to live in a mind that simplifies everything to the point that the answer is soooo simple. Forget any negative externalities, exterwhats? Oil is cheep, screw the poor, ignore the homeless, de-regulate businesses, oversite is so 1990, what can possibly go wrong?

I, for one, welcome government services. Government can put people to work in a bad economy, and that's a good thing.

By the way, this is a bad economy.

543, the positions are funded? Doesn't that mean that the money is already allocated for them?

WHERE did all this money come from?

ALL government money comes from taxpayers. It was OURS before it became THEIRS.

Everyone pays taxes, 540. It is possible to have a debate about this issue without making statements to the effect that only a small portion of the population pay taxes.

The increase in those getting assistance is unsustainable. Liberals say they are for the middle class. I consider myself a middle class American. I do not want assistance and I certainly do not want to pay for other able bodied people who choose to get assistance rather that work. Liberals are allowing abuse of the system by taking away the work mandate for welfare and food stamps and extending unemployment. They are allowing businesses to employ illegal immigrants for low wages rather than hire Americans and educating their children while the middle class pays for all of it. I am not certain how they can get away with this for so long. The city and county government has made extremely bad financial decisions and want the middle class to pay for it through tax increases. When are we going to wise up and say enough? Lets face it there is a large group of people that benefit from the freebies so they aren't going to say anything and there is a small group that has the write offs so the cost doesn't effect them all that much. It is the middle class the carries the burden of the bad decisions made don't let them fool you into thinking they care about anything but what comes out of your paycheck.

Exactly what % of the population do you think is on welfare? The 47% is actually 49% according to the census (number of households getting government aid). 1.7% get 50% or more of their income in aid. The rest are largely retirees, veterans, and your neighbors who take part in a plethora of government programs. Programs that provide student loans, small business loans, unemployment insurance, medicare and medicaid and other programs (first time home buyer tax credit may be included but i found conflicting information on that). A little perspective is nice.

When debating welfare we should also look at where California's federal taxes go. You will find that we are sending CA federal income tax money to states all over the midwest and south. Those states are largely "red" states that point fingers at CA as being a welfare state, well guess what, we are paying your welfare genius.

The liberal left and their allies in the media quickly jumped on Mitt Romney for insinuating too many people are on welfare, or food stamps or other "social services" all funded by the rest of the taxpayers. The reason the Department of Social services is adding so many new employees is to process and supervise the vast increases in these people seeking social services. It would be a safe bet that most of these folks are voting for Obama if they are voting at all. But much of the media won't touch this for fear of being politically incorrect and reflecting on their favorite candidate, Obama, who they are heavily invested in, since they worked so hard manipulating the news and their editorial opinions, in order to get him elected.

The negativity in this thread is amazing. New positions are funded and instead of this being a positive thing, i.e. more local employment, commentors are whining and sniveling!

So the State is mandating that we (taxpayers) provide more services for those here illegally, transients, drug and alcohol abusers and others who are subsidized by the "government..." The government is funded by the few who are PAYING taxes.... These "mandates" are driven by political agendas and we have to pay the price here in SB. Whether it's SB City College forcing local property owners to pay more for property tax (bond), that was passed because every (out of town) student was signed up to vote that election...The City of SB being "mandated" by the State to pay million$ for ridiculous environmental programs that will cost us all by the cutting of VITAL services to fund end of the world bandaids and fund those City positions that tell us the ocean is going to reach Carillo and State.
I will soon join the many businesses and other native Californians who will flee this madness- What a shame, California was once, truly The Golden State.

Folks, government is US. This sense that it works against us is not well thought through. Government does what each of us individually cannot do. We vote and create what government does. We live in a society where we consent to be governed. If we don't want government as it exists, we either actively participate to change it or we accept it as it is, or we move elsewhere (or we sit back and complain about it while we do nothing, because that's America too).

But the idea that government workers are "on the dole" and working against us is silly. We need them to do what they do.

438, I am not saying the county has never laid off anyone but the unions for the last 5-10 years have negotiated wage concessions and furloughs so they have not had layoffs. Private industry does lay off people but not our county government. I am in no way saying anything negative about county employees. If I did my better half would hit me.

County HAS laid people off. I won't break confidentiality, but I know of two who lost their jobs, and it was NOT for cause! Beyond funding, I mean. They were laid off due to budget cuts.
I'm one of those who worked my ass off for years in a gov't. job. I don't need to hear from people who think any gov't worker is worthless and lazy.
Too bad the layoffs are not documented; that too is to make gov't. look better.

It seems this hiring is due to state and national mandates -- I have not read much about it yet. Sorry, you need some specific training to get this job, like an MA in Social Work or Psych, I think.
And if you think you can handle doing this job and accomplishing something, I wish we could hear your job diary of 90 days.

Oh good more free money ... These positions, and projects (think about our new big airport many more employees, no incease in flights tho) are always described and defended as though the money that comes from the state and fed doesn't ultimately come from our own pockets. If you pay taxes, and ANY form of government spends ANY money, it comes from your pocket. Let's be really honest and clear about that. So 39 more people, in government jobs, figuring out how to spend more "government" money. These are now permanent, forever positions, at a TOTAL cost (pay, benefits, insurance, education reimbursement, vacation and sick leave, pension) of likely $100,000 EACH. That's almost $4 MILLION more dollars, each and every year, in perpetuity.

How can they hire people when they lay so many off , besides California State is bankruped. I would also like a job. There are 6 people I know without jobs. It seems as if companies only want the cheap labor under the table,so they can show a profit.

Because the feds AND state have money falling out of their pockets. Unbelievable.

Or maybe the state will have extra $ after we vote for the tax increase. I know we will see numerous pictures of uneducated children between now and November, but I still don't think that the State has gotten their fiscal house in order. At my work we are still chasing lucrative grants from the state for new projects that don't seem to be affected by anything.

I guess we voted for the bonds funding this stuff, so it is really our fault. No more voting for bond programs we can't afford!

...and the machine gets bigger and BIGGER...Yeah, who funds those positions? The State? where do they get the money....Oh yeah, that would be us, the taxpayers! The local taxpayers will also be paying for the employees retirement and medical insurance- NOT the State, as they are COUNTY EMPLOYEES....
These are all positions that will no doubt be more handouts for the unemployed, transients, and other 47%ers....
