It's Irisene: Iresine is a genus of flowering plants in the amaranth family, Amaranthaceae.[1] It contains 20 to 25 species, all of which are native to the American tropics. The generic name is derived from the Greek word e???? (erios), meaning "wooly", referring to the trichome-covered flowers.[2] Bloodleaf[3] is a common name for those species that have colored foliage, and these are often cultivated as ornamental plants. Some species are additives to versions of the hallucinogenic drink Ayahuasca. (from Wikipedia).

Dan - I think it's Acalypha wilkesiana, AKA Copper-Leaf, Jacob's Coat. Pictured on page 17 of "Tropicals" by Gordon Courtright. (Timber Press, 1988)

If it is Beefsteak Plant, it is way out of its range, might have been brought in. Perilla frutescens, mint family, toxic to cattle, invasive pest plant grown as food crop in Asia. Y'all really think it's not a coleus?

Thanks everyone for the responses, even the deleted one offered a good pick. But it looks like Seedlady came through with the match. "Beefsteak Plant." http://www.anniesannuals.com/signs/i%20-%20k/iresine_herbstii_bp.htm And here's another Edhat connection. My friend that sent me this is the son of Edhat member PHILLYPOPS, from back east. Dan, and yes 489, more kitty photos coming!

It's some type of coleus, though I don't know the exact name. I have one in my front yard, that was planted from cuttings. It grows like a weed! It blooms lavender flowers, which looks odd with the red foliage.
