Just think how bad city government would be if they had zero citizen advisory boards. At least you lived to tell and that makes you a better civic participant for the effort.

Participating in these often far too frustrating volunteer efforts makes me know who to vote for now and who to make sure never gets in office again.

Staff does follow whatever leadership we elect at the top once they firmly take charge and not play musical chair flip-flop like has been happening these past few elections.

Staff still thinks the hyper-progressives are still in charge. It will take a few more election cycles to send them a very different message, and make sure the employee unions are not making those voter choices for us.

Rule of thumb: if an employee union is for a candidate, make sure that candidate never gets a seat on city council. Easy as that and we can finally take this city in a new and more responsive direction.

Advisory boards are expected to ratify policy. and maybe support efforts by staff or officials. Remember they are fed the info from the staff and the minutes and reports of their work are prepared by staff. No one with independent thinking and strong will will be selected and appointed by the powers that be. This is really a waste of time in the guise of participatory democracy. I know because I "participated" in this frustrating, opaque and dense process many times before I got the point of its silliness.

I don't know about how effective all of the advisory boards are but the one I was on was quite impotent. Our committee made numerous recommendations to the Parks and Recreation commission. They occaisionally went along with our recommendations which they presented to the City Council. The City Council often decided to do things its own way regardless of the advice of the advisory committee or the Parks and Recreation commission.

Impossible to get any more information from the current city website. Spend the $130,000 and get a website people can use. Thank you.
