There was the man near La Conchita RR tracks, trying to rescue his dog, and now this terrible tragedy. My condolences to the families and loved ones. What freakish way to meet one's fate. There's something to be said for training your dog to stay put until you give the "release" command. And training your dog to have a good "recall." My sympathies go out to the drivers who did and didn't stay put after colliding with these two ladies and their dog. What a horrible occurrence----for everyone.

The responsibility should be solely with the drinker. Don't drink and drive. And buses should run just to transport those who go to bars and drink? How profitable would that be?

DUI Arrest Update |
2012-12-26 07:07 AM |

Drunk driving as attempted murder would mean a sentence of 16 years to life. Absolutely brilliant. While you're at it, make driving while tired and driving while changing the radio at least a 25 year prison sentence. Life in prison for that would be a little harsh. Driving while elderly should be at least an infraction. Here's the deal: No matter how stiff the punishment, some people will keep doing it. Getting angrier and angrier at them yields diminishing returns. Public transportation is not a perfect fix either but it does, in conjunction with dui law enforcement and greater public awareness, reduce the number of dui related accidents. Better public transportation would yield many other benefits.

The second set of proofs were sent off last week and printing is a go! New delivery date is expected in the first week of February. We'll advertise it in edhat when it is ready with booksigning dates etc.. It will of course be at SBs finest local stores - Chaucer's, Santa Barbara Arts, Tecolote, Vices & Spices, the Book Den & Lost Horizon Books. - Neal

DUI Arrest Update |
2012-12-26 09:07 AM |
|
My guess is that the people that are not hard core alcoholics or idiots have already stopped drinking and driving. That's why out of 350 drivers in Lompoc NONE were arrested for DUI. The ones that are still drinking and driving have serious mental health problems or addictions that they cannot control, and all the enforcement that we can afford will not prevent them from driving. Maybe available treatment programs would help this situation, but maybe not. I doubt that jailing addicts is a helpful and cost effective way to solve this problem. You can make them install breathalyzer equipment on their cars but then they will borrow their friends' cars.

My poinsettas are about 10 ft. They came from a Montecito estate about 75 yrs ago, a friend gave me slips when he was cutting his back; his father was a gardner who got the orginals. They need to be cut way back when through blooming, poke the sticks into the ground and they grow beautifully. The little potted ones don't do as well as the old fashioned kind.

I think an ice rink is cool. But I also think maybe this isn't the best area for it, considering the costs associated with it. A plain skating rink seems more logical around here. Admittedly, I would prefer a roller rink over an ice rink, as that's what I do. But if the ice rink ever comes, I'll be there.

No, no! Speaking for myself, I was alluding to the Cold Spring Bridge jumping barricade. Regarding a fence at the Wilcox property, I am behind that idea 1,000%. I'd even contribute $$$ if it meant that no more doggies go over the cliff. It wouldn't even have to be a very high fence, maybe four feet or so That would keep anyone or anything from going off the edge.

Can you go knock on their door? Depending on where you are hiking, the trails are likely to be a little muddy with all of the recent rain. We went up Jesusita and then Romero and we were slipping around a bit. Wear good hiking shoes, bring lots of water and snacks, a camera, and leave your cellphone at home (makes getting lost more fun and you aren't tempted to call SaR). Enjoy the hike!

Can you say BOONDOGLE? This ice rink has been a bad idea since day 1, and it just keeps getting worse. Gotta wonder how much money that non-profit has spent not building the ice rink all these years -- they got a $250k grant from the City of Goleta, but their office address is in downtown Santa Barbara. Can you imagine how much could be done for kids in our community with the $4.5 million they've already raised?

Growing up off Walnut lane (between Turnpike and Patterson) we had about a dozen poinsettas along a warm wall (as the first responder noted) that would grow every year to be 10-12' tall. We would prune them back annually to their stumps which were about the size of a small fire hydrant and they would grow back taller every year.

OP here. Thank you for all the support, good wishes, and recommendations. I'm a long-time sufferer, "been there done that" with all the medications, preventative and "rescue". Have a great neurologist, do everything right, know my triggers and still get them now and then. Sumatriptan (Imitrex) injections are the only thing that will stop a bad one in its tracks. The shots are incredibly painful for about 30 seconds, but with total relief from a full body impairment in as little as 15 minutes sometimes, it's totally worth it. I don't think they aren't making the injections, just that there is a shortage for some reason. Must be the holiday rush! I did try to get my Rx transferred to another pharmacy at the 11th hour on Christmas Eve with no result. At least I had the tablets and was able to end the migraine eventually. Wondering now if/when I'll hear from one of the pharmacies about the refill....

Stenopelmatus fuscus Jerusalem crickets are a group of large, flightless insects of the genus Stenopelmatus. They are native to the western United States and parts of Mexico. Its large, human-like head has inspired both Native American and Spanish names. Despite their common name, Jerusalem crickets are not true crickets, as they belong to the family Stenopelmatidae, while crickets belong to the family Gryllidae; nor are they native to Jerusalem. These nocturnal insects use their strong mandibles to feed primarily on dead organic matter but can also eat other insects.[2] Their highly adapted feet are used for burrowing beneath moist soil to feed on decaying root plants and tubers. While Jerusalem crickets are not venomous they can emit a foul smell and are capable of inflicting a painful bite.

And just because YOU want an Ice Skating Rink (and sound amazingly like a board member of the Greater Santa Barbara Ice Skating Association) doesn't make it a good idea. For the record, there is NO aquatic center within 40 miles of Goleta. If you're really trying to provide low cost activities for local kids, there are MUCH better and more economically viable choices than an ice skating rink.

Camping in a pup tent as a kid, it rained heavily and the potato bugs were coming into our tent in numbers. We were smacking them with shoes, they were screaming and we were sleepless and tormented. That was the last time I slept in a tent without a floor and zippered door.

Harmless, but with the strong jaws, I've heard the bite hurts. So just leave him be. :) Super cool (and creepy) looking bugs. I flipped the first (and only) time I've seen one. I had read about them years before and went totally geeky when I saw one.

During our first week in California, my mother was making my brothers bed and came across one of these. 'Something that ugly could not be real and must be one of his toys' so she picked up to put with his match box cars and let out a scream that could be heard for blocks. That was in 1978 and we still tease her about that day

These insects are often parasitized by horsehair worms (aka gordian worms, because they can tie themselves in knots). At least one species of the worms can alter the behavior of the host, inducing the critter to enter water, such as streams, water troughs, even puddles left after rain. Then the worm exits the host (which may have drowned) and lays its eggs in the water. The worm larvae can only live in water.

it depends on how old your kids are. Also, what do you want them to do with you? Unlike Christmas, most venues in Santa Barbara are going to tailor NYE for the 21 and over crowd because on New Year's Eve, it's all about partying and kissing someone at midnight. Sorry, you should just order some pizza and watch movies at home. Safe and sound away from the drunk party people that start coming out from 6PM and on. do yourself and your kids a favor, STAY HOME!

New Year's Eve Event |

When my kids were little, every New Year's Eve we'd go to a midafternoon movie matinee and then have a fairly early dinner at a nice restaurant like Harry's Plaza. We were usually home by 8:30 or 9, well away from the drunk drivers' witching hour. If the kids wanted to stay up til midnight it was perfectly okay, but they usually were in bed by about 10. Not terribly exciting, but we got to celebrate, we were a few hours ahead of the crowds and everyone had a good time.

Skating Plus is having a party (earlier for the little ones, later for the teens & adults) on NYE. Google their website & check it out if your kids are into roller skating (or if they aren't & you're looking for comedic relief). Skating Plus is in Ventura, in case you weren't aware. (No local public rink in town.)

When our kids were young, we would have another special meal, and then watch some Christmas-New Year type programs. Usualy the boys would be tired from surfing or being at the beach most of the day. We never wanted to be out among the possible drunk drivers, and home was safe. I had an arrray of pots and pans out, and at midnight my kids could clang them. An elderly neighbor also did the same thing. That was our holiday bash. If there were fireworks from Hope Ranch , we could watch them. We had done this in Minnesota also, so it was a tradition.

Now; from the freeway....it is even more apparent just how tiny a parcel this is....especially considering that the railroad runs right through it. It blows me away to think that there is still hope to construct a "world-class hotel" (by modern definition...) on such a site. Who are they kidding? It was successful for years in an "it is what it is" sense.....but times have changed. I'm glad it's not my money that's at stake.

Good idea, Tracy314, and I agree that Mr. Douglas is a good person, generous in helping donate this land to the City of Santa Barbara. But this IS a city park and it's up to the city to maintain its parks in a safe way. There's no guarantee that the city would accept money that has specific strings to it, to build fencing that, judging by comments here, quite a few do not want, accepting that some dogs may lose their lives. Anyone know whether there can be a gift that's specified for enhancement of a city-owned property?

When our kids were young, we would all cook together - something special for dinner, and then make party hats out of wrapping paper and ribbons left over from Christmas. Then we would watch a movie and wait for the ball drop for the New Year. One year, we cheated and found a channel that was showing the ball drop in real time - and we got to go to bed early!

Agree with some variation of what REXOFSB posted. Our routine was a family-type movie, a Chinese restaurant and then to home. I do recall with fondness the several years of city-sponsored "first night" celebrations downtown, but times (and downtown) have changed significantly in the last ten years. The Lobero used to put on a holiday time "Panto" show that was very family-friendly and great fun back in the same era, circa 1999-2001 or so.
