I hate to be a buzzkill, but am I the only one who sees a lawsuit in the making? Not from one of the bums, but from a litigious parent whose child gets pricked. The charge, of course, will be that the city deliberately planted cacti, which are known to cause injury. It may not come to that, though, because I'm sure most bums carry knives and would be able to successfully destroy any plants that might be in their way. Nice try, though. It's nice to see the city is thinking outside the box.

Thanks for the helpful instructions "how to beat the system". Not.

No help for our SB Police who prefer to think of more humane ways to address this problem other than draconically rounding up people for loitering and begging and putting them into wagons, as they do in some towns.

There are heavy fines for destroying property, public and private.

If a child or adult gets pricked they will not repeat the same mistake.

As I passed another young and healthy-looking panhandler sitting outside a grocery store with his "hungry" sign and back pack the other day, I wondered if we couldn't make these people get a license to panhandle ...

Misdemeanor child molestation can mean many things... We should wait to hear more cos those charges ARE quite damming. It is so difficult not to rise to the bait and get all up in arms about... What? We don't really know yet. It must be grave for an arrest to have been made, but there's always MORE to these stories than initially meets the eye.

Rincon High School Teacher Arrested

2012-12-13 07:06 AM

Please let's have some level headed conversation here. The teachers are background checked. A lie detector test, while sometimes useful as an investigative tool, cannot be used to the determine the guilt or innocence of a person. Furthermore, this is America and we don't give lie detector tests to people just to see if we think they are nice people. The school has done the proper thing in placing the teacher on paid leave. If the teacher goes to trial and is found innocent he would be able to litigate the school for all sorts of things. They are covering themselves, and you by the way. If they have to pay a multi-million dollar settlement for discriminatory practices guess where that money will come from? Finally there are many, many instances of mentally disturbed students making such claims against their teachers in retribution for some discipline they have received. So rather than judging, why not let our legal system, the best in the world despite it's flaws, find the truth and administer, if warranted, the appropriate justice.

Aloe Plant Leaves

I've got a pot overflowing, you can have some pups(offsets).

As far as I know, there are no native aloes. Aloe arborescens is most common planted aloe, not medicinal and likely will stain.

The inside of the aloe is probably more sterile than an operating room. I've been using it for decades on surface wounds, road rash, cuts, scrapes. Maybe I'm a fast healer but it seems to help form a scab quicker that releases easier, and minimizes scarring.

@ YIN YANG - The "fog line" is the technical term for the painted line on the outside of the lane. So, in other words, for roadway striping you have the center line, lane lines (if there are multiple lanes) and the fog line at the edge. It's called that because you can use it if it's foggy to keep in on the road.

The first year or two I parked free on the sand outside the clasroom in the Physical Science Building where my 8 AM class met.

It's a different world out there and rather than a beautiful spread out campus UCSB has become a maze of buildings each blocking out the sun from a nearby building. A collection of "fiefdoms" with lousy or no master planning resulting in a maze of wandering pathways... Sure not like a midwestern university I went to for a master's degree after graduating from UCSB.

Why won't he enforce laws that are already on the books? Walking through the smoke cloud and the Meth-head bench just south of Yogurtland is a sickening. Aloe Plant Leaves

I have used my fresh aloe plants for years to heal
small burns, and it works quickly. Just wash the
plant before cutting into it and you probably don't need to worry about infection. I have some extra plants I'd be happy to give you.

For scar healing, once there is no open wound, I also
recommend Mederma, which comes in a tube at most drug stores. Costs about $28-$30 but you only need a tiny amount daily on the wound. I tend to scar, and it really helps minimize scar buildup.

Good luck!

Without sounding too harsh I hope, I'm wondering why the need to fly such short distances so often max? Is it personal play? Work? Planes pollute so much of the natural beauty you photograph. I just finished watching a documentary about islanders in the pacific who have never used any sort of fuel to pollute and who live completely off the land and within a short time their islands will be under water and they have no where to go. I'm wondering if a short trip to Ventura is worth that? I realize cars pollute too but not like planes.

Undoubtedly the most overrated restaurant in SB. Not a bad place if you've never been to an authentic taqueria before that makes tortillas from scratch, but this place is nothing special. The food while totally edible is bland and far better offerings nearby. The constant fawning over it has gotten old. It's a spot for LA tourons, not locals. If he is convicted of a sex crime he will have to register as a sex offender and stay away from children the rest of his life, after he gets out of jail. It's a pretty extreme punishment so I am satisfied with how the system is working in those cases.

Here Here, 365! Shame on any Santa Barbarian for putting down their LOCAL University! As a recent UCSB student (and lifelong Santa Barbara local), I can say that my education was top-notch. UCSB is wonderful place not only for academics, but students actually learn to balance their lives - most of the people I knew held down jobs, internships, graduated with high marks, and still managed to enjoy some "wayward" leisure time.

As for all the people who claim to "not care" about why Oprah was on campus, why did you read this article? As the great Oprah Winfrey once said, "Don't throw stones in glass houses..."

603, viability (or the lack of it) is a big issue too at the La Colina/La Cumbre school crossing.

For fun, try and turn left from La Colina to La Cumbre; Very tricky to see cars coming down La Cumbre and just across the street is one of those areas with no sidewalk and lots of home owner bushes.

Add to that people passing on the right shoulder when someone is turning on to La Colina. It is a deadly accident just waiting to happen there (and a spot I was brushed by a car too)

Teen-aged girls CAN be conniving and manipulative. IF the girl in this case doesn't like her teacher and is lying to get him in trouble, it would not be the first time that type of thing had happened. IF the teacher violated the student, this would not be the first incident of that type either. An investigation should establish whether or not the teacher was inappropriate with the student.

A lot of flowerbeds around town have thorny plantings for various reasons; for example, veterinary offices put them around the rims of their gardens to keep dog pee from ruining them, and the bougainvilleas that are everywhere have wicked thorns; so I don't think one more area of prickles would be actionable. The thing about Mexican food is that its a lot like music. Its very subjective and after too many meals at your favorite place it loses its appeal - like when you over play an album and dont really want to hear it for a while. It doesnt take away from the fact that its a great album - you just burn out on it and need to shelve it for a while.

So I rotate around town depending on what I am in the mood for but there are major differences in the quality of the meats that various places use. Some places use the cheapest lowest quality and others use the best quality. And of course salsa can make or break a place - for instance Rincon has incredible salsa but low quality meats

Over the years I have probably eaten there with others 50 times. You would think that I or the many who accompanied me would have either gotten sick, seen mice, termite droppings, plastic int their food or some of the other vile things described in these vindictive posts. Just the law of averages would point to at least one of these horrors occurring to me or the dozens of friends and family dining with me through the years ofpatronizing this restaurant. They don't pretend to be a "fine dining " restaurant. If you are looking for that experience go to the main dining room at the Biltmore, Molly's Tratoria or out to the Bacara.

Stats can be manipulated, have you ever watched The Wire, it's called juking the stats. Gangs here are the same as they ever were and they aren't leaving with community outreach. Shoving our heads in the sand doesn't make the problem go away. Injunctions do not criminalize communities, they criminalize criminals. Most importantly, trying to stop them from associating with other recognized criminals. If some of these "rehabilitated" offenders really want to stay on the straight and narrow, why would they want to hang around with other criminals.

Make a new life or get flagged, tagged or possibly body bagged.

I didn't know if Earle Ovington senior ever had a son, though. I knew his daughter, Audrey, for years and she never said anything about having a brother. The 1931 Ovington is obviously part of that family, though.

Also, the Airport terminal was recently named for the local judge who gerrymandered city annexation for airport property, which is a travesty--it SHOULD have been named in honor of Ovington.

Prickly plants uproot panhandlers.

2012-12-13 11:31 AM

People forget that a significant proportion of those we love to hate - namely the "dirty homeless" - are former combat veterans, mentally and physically scarred by fighting for America. They served to protect our freedoms and way of life, which ironically, include the dubious "privilege" of getting punitively heavy-handed with those who have come upon hard times, whether combat veterans or simply those who are less lucky.

Perhaps being a good samaritan, rather than a judgmental snob, would be the civilized way of dealing with this issue. At this time of year, having spent thousands of dollars on arbitrary gifts for people who probably won't appreciate them on - account of expectation - maybe spare a kinder thought for the "unwashed" for whom a cooked meal, is a special event.

And for those who label themselves "Christian", ever heard of a guy called Jesus?

It seems Mr Larimore Hall and the rest of the DCC are willing to sacrifice their safety and neighborhoods to pander to a minority and be PC.

The DCC and RCC are both so extreme and leaning toward the extreme wings of their respective party locally it makes both irrelevant to the majority of either party.

Until we know why there was a drop in gang offenses, we should proceed with the injunction. For all we know, it was the threat of the injunction that has stopped some of this activity.

Anyway, injunctions should be colorblind. If there are gang members of other ethnicities in SB, we should include them. Is anyone saying that there are and we are excluding them? Unfortunately most of the gang members that show up in the papers seem to be latino, so of course they are included in the injunction.

Why don't you be a good samaritan and consider the people who have to hose down their shop entrance every morning before they start a day's a day's work? Or the smells issuing from parking lots and areas around town. Even one's own lawn and property is not inviolable.

Regarding the photo of "Sammy Battistone" shown in the 1957 O&G, this would be Sam Battistone's son. Note the date cited as Sam's birthdate. Born in 1913 and a member of the senior class of 1957 would make him 43 years-old when graduating from Santa Barbara High School. Sam was a dear friend of mine and I knew him to be very intelligent; I'm certain he was not fresh out of high school when I first met him and working in Sambo's corporate offices! However, his son, "Sammy" graduated from SBHS in 1957.

Remember the guy walking home from work on the Eastside who was beaten to death by three proud Eastsider gang members who had recently been released from prison and were celebrating with a day of partying and eventually, murder??
Yes, lets absolutely make sure we don't stop them from congregating with other gang members because that is an egregious violation of their civil rights!! Freedoms (such as congregating with fellow gang members) do not = Civil Rights.

"A gang injunction is a court-issued restraining order prohibiting gang members from participating in certain activities. It is based on the legal theory that gang activity constitutes a public nuisance that prevents non-gang members from enjoying peace in their communities."

Aloe Plant Leaves

2012-12-13 04:18 PM

There are no native aloes in Santa Barbara. All aloe species are native to Africa. There are many aloe species that grow here in gardens that have soothing gel in their leaves (those spiky things ARE the leaves, 381P). But not all do, and aloe vera is the species that is most commonly used for wounds, insect bites, sunburn, etc. Aloes are well-adapted to our climate and many of them grow as if they were natives.

Aloe vera plants are usually available at local nurseries--even Home Depot probably has some. Just cut a small piece of a leaf and use the gel from that, then another piece the next day, etc. No need to cut a new leaf off the plant each day. Look at photos of aloe vera online before buying, because sometimes plants are mismarked.

The bracero program provided cheap labor, legally. Having non-violent criminals do farm labor would be a way to meet cheap farm labor needs without illegals too. (It is insane to incarcerate so many at such high cost. Most prisoners would prefer to work outside than to be inside all day.)

Being against illegal immigration does not mean you are bigoted. It means we should try to meet our 'cheap labor' needs in other ways while still upholding our laws. While illegal immigrants contribute to our society, they also cost our society a great deal too -- in health care, law enforcement, education, social services, civility, rational discourse, ...

Having a high stress level is a logical outcome of choosing to illegally immigrate, live, and work here. Reduce your stress level by applying for legal status, or work to fix what's wrong in your own country please.

Hobbit Line

I didn't see anyone when I drove past at 3:30pm, so I highly doubt 755 is correct. When I showed up about an hour prior to big movies opening (Twilight (shut up), Harry Potter and Hunger Games), it's a decent line. Still got ok seats, but if you want good seats, be prepared to go 2-3+ hours before. Send someone to grab coffee or food after you get in line - don't stop on the way. It helps pass time. Now I'm curious - if I drive past on my way home, I'll post again with an update.

@751: The "uh, oh" referred to the fact that this isn't the first time that the mention of rising tides has brought a huge local reaction. Remember the "blue line" that the City Council authorized to be painted in low-lying areas of town until the project went down in flames amidst a sea of controversy?

Further, I used the word "also" in connection with the so-called king tides, to separate the "uh, oh" remark from the one about the so-called king tides.

@758: Oh, would that it were so! I'm not only not 27, but I'll never see 30 again either.

Police came by my home between 12-12:30 pm today. My neighbor called me and said two officers have your F250 truck surrounded out at the curb and they are looking in the truck and circling around by foot. They had their side search light pointed at my truck. I walked outside and asked them if everything was okay and they said rudely 'yes' and quickly got back into their car and sped away. I read KEYT report on Facebook and realized they must have been looking for this guy who may own a white truck? We live by GVJHS and SB Charter.

I think it is the "Illegal" bit that upsets people. And the crime that some bring with them. No other country in the world would allow the undocumented to enter or stay in their country illegally. They don't understand the problem we have or how it was allowed to grow to this proportion..

But we do and we have to deal with it. The legal immigrants work hard, support families with pride and how many do we see waiting around town, panhandling and looking for a hand out? None so far as I can see.

Grandparent Scam

2012-12-13 06:14 PM

This happened to my godparents in upstate NY. They got a phone call from a young man who just said quietly, "Grandma?" so they then said their teenage grandson's name and therefore gave away the hook. The caller claimed to be in trouble in Ecuador. Since the family does travel a lot, they didn't think it was beyond the realm of possibility and ended up sending thousands of dollars because the fake "grandson" said, "Please don't tell my parents!" So, not a lot of research is needed to pull off this scam. If the call doesn't work, they just move on to the next phone number and try it.

Could the sirens be from the incident from the earlier thread below, one of the early entries from Roger mentioned the Patterson area.

I'm cool with all the "freedom of information" act and such, as well as happy to see the check point listings as another good reminder not to drive with a buzz - but I'm thinking the court stings, proby sweeps should be kept tight. Loose lips sink ships.

I bet it was I just heard the dispatcher which is the way it is on CHP Channels the only possible way you could hear car to car is if they are going past you..It sounded like he was going thru residental areas. I couldn't figure it out rightaway just hearing dispatch. Finally it came over SO Channel then I heard almost the whole thing.

The less you know about a problem, the easier it seems to be to solve. Thus, 831 has an easy solution.

Science is done by consensus of the facts. When there's a complex problem of which you do not have applicable domain experience, though, you look to the consensus of experts in the field:

Naples Development Appeal

They own the land people. They pay property taxes on the land. You cannot tell people that they cannot do anything with land that they own. If you want it kept pristine, raise the money to buy it. You are advocating the taking of the property without purchasing it. Do you really expect them to keep paying property taxes, but do nothing with the land but leave it for you to play on?

A Kingly Tide

2012-12-13 10:06 PM

King tide is a popular term used to refer to an especially high tide. ‘King tide’ is not a scientific term, nor is it used in a scientific context. Use of the term ‘king tide’ originated in Australia, New Zealand and other Pacific nations to refer to an especially high tide that occurs only a few times per year. The term has now come to be used in British Columbia and the United States as well. King tides are the focus of an international photo initiative that engages local citizens to document the events and share images on social media platforms such as Flickr and Facebook.

``````
Seawater spread into several low-lying communities along the California coast Thursday morning as unusually high "king tides" pulled the Pacific Ocean farther ashore than normal.
Puddle Jumper
2012-12-13 10:18 PM
The cessna 182 gets 10-12mpg but flies in a straight line, saving on overall travel distance. Therefore it is no worse than many cars. I'm quite certain all the cessnas in California don't put out as much greenhouse gases as a forest fire. Electric planes are just a bit behind electric cars and fuel prices will drive that market for student pilots soon enough. Also, cessna has just switched the new 182s from gas to turbo diesel for 2013 which means the planes could very well be algae or biodiesel powered in the next few years!
There is nothing like seeing where you live from above and I hope you take a 30 min "adventure flight" around Santa Barbara.
