Edhat Dogs Needed

2012-12-07 12:12 AM

I hope I live to see the day when humans stop incarcerating birds in cages. I have had two birds, both of whom found me by wandering into my yard.

There is no such thing as providing them with enough freedom or companionship. Birds belong with other birds, out in the open where they can fly and forage and mate. Keeping birds is barbaric and cruel.

Birds are beautiful, and thus humans want to keep them nearby. Please don't ever encourage anyone to buy or cage birds.

Brick & Mortar VS Online Shopping

The Apple Store on State St. is always a nice place to go. Apple sure knows how to hire the best, the brightest and the nicest. The only drag with shopping there is that each and every time I go, I later have to spend time writing rave reviews about all the Apple employees that helped me. What a great group of people.

With a special shout out to Madison. What a sweet guy.

190P. You could probably encounter a walloping good dose of hostility if someone caught you pointing your camera at them. Best to call as soon as you see this type of activity, memorize the height, weight, clothing worn, tell that to dispatch, and wait, at a safe distance, for the police.

Even with a camera shot, it would be hard for the police to charge these miscreants. Eye witnesses are needed.

Fallen Eucalyptus near El Encanto

2012-12-07 01:32 AM

There's a gigantic eucalyptus in my back yard. There's an even bigger one out front, which is a street tree. Going on 50 years and no one in my family has been killed by a eucalyptus so far.

The eucalyptus at the corner of Emerson Ave and Plaza Rubio are enormous. The Eucalyptus citriodora outside the Main Library are majestic and smell like lemons.

We have at least 44 species of eucalyptus in Santa Barbara. I am so tired of people calling them "widow makers" and breaking out the mental chainsaws every time a eucalyptus is mentioned. Oh. Like no other tree has fallen in the past few decades and taken out power lines. Um. Oaks? Cypress? Pine trees?

Is Caruso going to provide housing for his hotel workers or do we pack a few hundred more people into a town bursting at the seams? Does he get to skate with a sweetheart deal of a giant tax break, given special privileges that no ordinary citizen can enjoy? Maybe the hotelier in Dario is hoping for the same kind of deal. Maybethe DA should have filed charges against Caruso. Same crime, No?

This may come as a shock to some readers but Dario Pini is a very nice guy with a huge heart who lets his tenants do what they want inside the rentals including adding walls, as long as they pay the rent. A great number of his tenants would be homeless if he were to be shut down...because no one else would rent to them. I am a landlord and I don't want 14 people in my houses. Yes, he does have an issue with hating to throw out wood, old windows etc. as he thinks it's wasteful and he will be able to use them on a property somewhere. ..which never happens... I am not condoning his management style but I understand him and he is not the villain he is portrayed to be...

186, Ethiopia is a little to the East of Southern Sudan, and West of Somalia. Unlike its (in)famous neighbors, it has a wide variety of climates, soils, and altitudes. It also has a history of more stable and less intrusive governance than most of its nighbors giving it a great diversity of agricultural practices, tastes, and cuisines, the histories of which date back to biblical times and beyond. 'course I wouldn't know any of this either if I hadn't had Ethiopian coworkers and friends over the years (and leafed through the Bible). Wouldn't mind visiting there some day.

Seeing something in person is always better than looking at a picture. When you buy it you have it...no waiting. You never have to pay shipping if you buy it at the store. And every once in a while you get a person at the store who gives you over-the-top customer service. I get goose bumps when someone making $10/hr treats me like royalty and is an expert at their job.

Having said that, if I know what it is I'm looking for and I can get free shipping, then online rocks! Especially if you can can also get the item tax free. I can easily shop 20 stores in 20 minutes online. Try doing that in person this time of year.

After years of fighting to get farm...

2012-12-07 07:27 AM

160P asks ".. .how is the run off poisoning the water." Are you serious? Runoff poisons the water by transporting the fertilizers & pesticides that were applied to the field (and not used by the plants) into the creeks & streams, and ultimately the ocean. The agricultural land does not need to be owned or operated by a huge conglomerate to contribute to this problem - small farmers are frequent contributors as well. Stormwater pollution is a huge problem and Ag operations are exempt from the Clean Water Act that covers this problem, thanks to their effective lobbying. They should be held to the same standards as the rest of us and not be allowed to contaminate ANY water. There are thousands of examples of the damage caused by Ag runoff - one is the massive hypoxic zone in the Gulf of Mexico.

Emuwren - I totally agree in concept with you, but the reality is that there are thousands of unwanted bird given up each year after their owners decide they're more work than they anticipated.

I myself have worked full-time in wild bird rescue, rehabilitation and education for the last 21 years. Several unwanted parrots have lived out their lives with me, and the little lovebird I have now was given to me.

She has a lovely home, and spends most of the day with me, out of her cage, on me and near me, so your generalization does not apply here. She is an affectionate and happy little thing, and I adore her.

I currently also care for 7 previously injured but non-releasable wild birds of prey and use them in educational programs (they would have otherwise been euthanized). Two of them have lived with me for 14 years.

I agree that parrots should be kept in the wild. Compared to dogs and cats, they still are wild birds, but what about the ones that are abandoned or unwanted? What should we do with them?

Have you ever worked with birds?

Not for the faint of heart, but if you're planning a driving trip, go up the coast to Fandango Restaurant in Pacific Grove. Their CM is almost worth the drive itself.

From their website:

The Sandwich
2 slices white bread
2 pieces thinly sliced ham
2 pieces thinly sliced Swiss cheese
Place the 2 slices of ham between the 2 slices of cheese, then put it all between the 2 slices of bread. In other words, make a ham and cheese sandwich. The trim the crusts from the bread.
The Sauce
2 egg yolks
4 ounces shredded Swiss cheese
2 ounces whipping cream
Salt and pepper
Put egg yolks, cheese, and whipping cream in a bowl and mix with a rubber spatula. Put the sandwich in a pan and pour mixture over it. Bake at 325°F for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the cheese turns golden.

Fandango Reservations: 831-372-3456
223 17th Street

Pini isn't the only famous slumlord in SB. I'm an architect and look at the planning department's "street files" online, when researching a new project. I frequently stumble upon paperwork related to past code violations and unsanitary living conditions. Many of those landlords have names that you'd recognize from businesses and institutions around town. By the way, I think Pini was sentenced to live in one of his units in the past but opted for jail.

Edhat Dogs Needed

2012-12-07 08:03 AM

I agree with both EmuWren and EITS --- actually, each is saying the same thing: birds should not be pets; EITS adds to it by asking what to do for those birds that have been bought and then abandoned?

37 years ago, younger and stupider, in a pet store in Cambridge, I was talked into buying a parrot. She's traveled and lived with me since and I love her. A year and a half ago, I got a rescue dog, hoping they'd get along. He might have; she took one look and said or showed the equivalent of, "Out, damned Spot!"

So, we've adapted for the last year and a half - she gets much more cage time; he goes to dog bed earlier and rises later than would otherwise have been so, so she can walk around. I would undo what I did but I now love the little dog.

When others have met my bird, a yellow-naped Amazon, they've ooohed and aahhed and I have said, "Never, just NEVER buy a bird, even a domestically-raised one. They're wild creatures and should be so." ...But what to do when they're for sale in pet stores? ... I turn and walk away, saddened, quite sure that whoever ends up buying that bird will keep it in a cage. Ogden Nash could have said the same thing about a parrot (or any bird): "To see a robin in a cage, puts all heaven in a rage." I think that a bird unbought is one bird that's saved from a cage-prison life.

Understanding what I innocently did so long ago, I have tried to expiate that sin by volunteering at the SB Wildlife Care Network for the last 12+ years, with the birds. ...But what to do for my bird-friend who most certainly will outlive me?

Don't even get me started about the RV's around town! IMHO, it is, along with the homeless who've taken over key parts of town, an example of how the city is allowing itself to slip into a bad state of affairs. I'm compassionate for the people who are truly needy, and who've been made homeless by the economy. They should get the help and services they need. But there are others who chose to live off the grid (and off others who work and pay taxes), and it is they who are cluttering the streets and driving out tourist dollars. Who's really running the city? If you don't think it's becoming a long term problem, I think you may not be looking at the issue with an open mind... this is 2012 and homesteading the West has long been a thing of the past.

I'm confused. Why is it okay for State Parks to invite "park hosts" to stay longer term but not private parks? And why is it any of our business how a private organization runs it's property? And lastly why does the OP consider campgrounds unsafe if there are RVs present? That would apply to all State and Federal campgrounds that are accessible by motor vehicle.

I believe this thread is about the personal feelings the OP and others have against RVs and the prejudice that they are associated with homelessness.

I think we should improve the environment. But the enviros would go a lot further if they stopped trying to pass laws that required people to spend a bunch of their own hard-earned money to monitor and remediate their activities. Said activities such as the application of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers are legal, right? So if you want someone to start monitoring the results of their legal activities, raise taxes and provide funding for them to do the monitoring at no cost to the farmers. If you can get the people to support the increased taxes, then you know you have a winning issue.

We should pass a amendment to the state constitution that the legislature does not pass any more unfunded mandates that cost business owners to implement. Why is this not done already?

Yes, S.B.RON, and some of the materials he has used on his house are coincidentally identical in appearance to materials discovered to be missing from other locations. Large quarried sandstone blocks, for example.

He rents to people no one else will rent to, 255 says. And what's his motivation for that? He knows they are too fearful to complain about the conditions of the properties he rents to them. Perfect conditions for him to profit from, until the city once again slaps his wrist.

Mystery History

2012-12-07 08:40 AM

The building behind the post office is "The Anapamu", a lodging house (upstairs) and grocery store (first floor). It was torn down around 1918. The State & A Post Office opened on November 21, 1914 at a cost of $100,000 (the land was donated for $1). Thomas M. Storke, at the time the publisher of the "Daily News & Independent" was the postmaster. Two decades later the town had outgrown that post office and it was Storke who led the campaign to have the new post office built in 1936 at Anacapa and Canon Perdido, replacing one of the city's favorite whorehouses. The Santa Barbara Museum of Art opened in the former post office on June 5, 1941 at exactly 11:43 a.m. Why 11:43? I was told that Buell Hammett, the museum's first president, had the museum's horoscope cast to determine the most auspicious hour! - Neal Graffy

The Ethiopian restaurants I've been to, in Boston and LA, served individual injera and separate sauces (wot?) to account for preferences, vegetarians etc. There's wasn't much of a communal element that I recall. As others have already pointed out to the geography- and culture-challenged, Ethiopia is not Somalia or Sudan.

I can no longer walk up and down steps unless it's one or two..My knees go out I fall it's very painful. I used to run everywhere up and down steps I was kinda healthy. It was along time ago talking about it and showing others up makes up for other things that are not so good about ourselves..I've only been inside Nordstroms acouple of times after having coffee there once I was really happy I did not take the elevator.

After the last trip, I tried making them without much success. Thank you 246 for the recipe. I will try again. Also, I see there is a new French restaurant on State Street in the 700 block that offers a Croque Monsieur, albeit an expensive one. I think this thread is about having agreed upon rules and everyone following them. I don't think it is begrudging to RV's, just making sure they follow agreed upon rules. Regarding the privatization of parks -- would that poster rather have it an closed dump with no trespassing allowed? I think EP has done a great job of filling a niche. Personally, I have no problem with the dog fees -- it sure cuts down on the amount of dogs running loose. I'd rather recreate in a semi-dogless EP than be overrun by the doggy crowd at Wilcox.

He would get kinda nutty if he didn't have a cigarette, I always had smokes and always passed em out they were pretty cheap back then. I'm pretty sure I was at FellowShip Hall when that happened across the street not sure it was like 30 years ago. I do know however that Jonsey was stabbed in the back by this guy while he was sitting down. Wow, 296, apparently you failed reading comprehension as well as a few other posters in this thread. From the article, "The maximum amount of time behind bars for Hill and Moore is three years, according to prosecutor Mary Barron, and three years, eight months for Stanley. Under the plea agreement, they will get felony probation and time served" So you are partially right, but they will get credit for time served, which since he was "first arrested in July" (also from the article) will only be a few months. The rest of the time will be behind bars, and then he will ALSO serve felony probation time.

All of this time will be hammered out during sentencing.

And no, it wasn't a bank robbery planned. Stanley and his mug friends were going to rob a HOUSE! Yikes.

Brick & Mortar VS Online Shopping

The nature of my business is such that you almost have to buy local. What fascinates me is how many people assume that online or big chain stores are cheaper. We often beat online prices, and we provide better service, advice, and help too. It pays to get to know a friendly local business and work with them. For example, paying up front and asking them to order the product for you can result in savings, because they aren't guessing what might sell and using their space and money to stock stuff in the hopes that it will sell. And I don't think anyone above mentioned the obscene prices that UPS, FedEx, and the USPS are getting to ship stuff. Research online, then work with a local merchant whenever possible.

301 Looks like it's let's bash the landlords day. What a load of negativity. The landlord provides a home for those who cannot afford to buy or have lost their own home. He provides a service allowing a person to live, to remain and to work here. Thus ensuing a percentage of a resident workforce here in town.

Landlords come in all types and so do renters. The latter can be lazy layabouts who spend their days nay saying and complaining about anything that comes up, or industrious folks who contribute to the community.

You can also tell them to hold your packages at the UPS office so you can pick them up.

The funny thing is that most of these landlords are stuck. They overpaid and or over-leveraged their places and the rental market does not support their mortgages nor is there any upside in the near term (10 years) Most are either living fumes or hope. Pini makes it work because he has cash and doesnt spend a dime on his properties...

SB real estate will be flat for the next 20+ years unless there is a seismic shift in wages and jobs. ( Median incomes dont come close to median housing in SB.)

As both a renter and an owner, I like watching this shift... the cash rich owners will be fine but the vast majority of folks that own 1 or 2 units are screwed and based on their greed and goals, that's just fine with me. Karma come to mind.

Online is excellent if you wear a size that the brick and mortar retailer is often out of. You can "shop" in large stores and then order on line.

PS - No purchase is ever "tax free". New laws require larger merchants to charge CA tax now. Even if they don't charge sales tax, if you are honest with the IRS when it comes to tax time, you have to pay a user tax on those items you purchased on line but have yet to pay tax on. Shame on all of you who don't. California schools are suffering, in part because of taxpayers under reporting their tax obligations.

Santa Barbara is known for being hostile to RV's. RV publications cover Ventura and Santa Ynez (el cap), while skipping SB completely. There is one local RV park here located next to the freeway and railroad, and it is expensive. NOT a nice offering to the wealthy Rv'er. At some point SB decided that it was better than RV's and would not participate in the RV economy. The irony is that monied RV owners pass over SB and spend their money elsewhere, and almost all the remaining RV's are occupied by poor folks who spend little and cost much. Keep that RV hate thing going and tell me how it works out for you. A first world problem indeed.

Love Dog & Cat of the week! I just sent in pictures and info on my cute doggy (yes, this is my personal opinion) and if you aren't interested, just don't click on the link when it comes out. There are plenty of other edhat topics on a daily basis to interest you; I don't find EVERY topic on edhat interesting, but I realize it isn't tailored to my exact taste. Elings (Trailer) Park

2012-12-07 10:55 AM

Cut the park some slack! As a Mesa resident who uses the park daly, especially South Park for dog walking, most of the commenters need to think and get the facts before they write. Elings Park has been referred to as the largest private/ non-profit park in the US. It exists and operates on user fees and donations. Dog walkers are supposed to pay an annual fee, which helps to provide for poop bags, cleanup and maintenance. The park host volunteers provide an important service, for their 20 hours per week patrolling, answering questions, and helping keep the park safe, just by their very presence. Many large national, state and county parks (like Lake Cachuma), rely on volunteer park hosts. They receive RV space for their volunteer service.

301 & a few others sound like they don't get basic economics. As a society, we've bought into the idea of property ownership. Many small investors save to buy one additional building, and partially pay that mortgage with the rent they collect, earning equity (retirement income when their 30 year mortgage is finally paid off), but no "income" per se. They often operate at a negative cash flow, due to irresponsible tenants.

I'm a struggling underpaid local, who's living in my own home, that's really owned by the bank, but we saved a down payment, and are willing to commit to decades of payments to eventually own it. I can't afford another property, but I've done a lot of repairs for other property owners and am appalled at the condition of many rental properties, not because of the conscientious owners, but because of the irresponsible, often slob tenants. This applied equally to residences and commercial properties. I concluded that most property owners are more considerate and conscientious than most renters. Most owners appear to have grown up and work towards the future and accept personal responsibility, while renters often don't.

A man arrested twice in a one-month...

2012-12-07 10:57 AM

They will get sentenced for a whole amount of time..so say three years (for example). They could get credit for time served in County Jail (at time and a half so instead of 1:1 they will likely get 1.5 days credit or more for each day they served) and then have a suspended sentence on felony probation (which will likely be lowered in a year or so if they behave and follow their probation requirements). That's how it usually works. If for some reason the sentence isn't suspended they will likely do 3/4 time or at most 80% of their sentence in County Jail (per the new state law) and then be released to continue parole for the remaining of their term.

Brick & Mortar VS Online Shopping

2012-12-07 10:57 AM

During "normal" times of year, I try to shop in person as much as possible, and at the locally owned places as much as possible. I will pay a little more to do so.

For Christmas shopping, I'm going 99% online. I don't want to deal with horrible drivers (why is everyone so angry?), crowds, parking mess, and so on. It's not the prices and it's not the support of one business or another, it's the other shoppers I want to avoid!

Elings (Trailer) Park

2012-12-07 11:04 AM

347: Again. Eling's is a park, not a campground. Campground hosts at campgrounds, where other people are camping, are expected. But since Eling's closes at night, and nobody else is allowed to camp there, it doesn't make sense for RVs to be parked there all the time and people living there. At the very most, I can understand one "park ranger" being allowed to live in the park, but a whole group of RVs in a park is not normal, and not what Eling's was permitted for.

We want Edhat to be successful. Good Luck

Well this is where the line gets fuzzy. How much upkeep is the responsibility of the tenant and how much is that of the landlords? From what I know other than general upkeep, it is the Landlords responsibility, without retribution on the tenant for asking for the repairs. Of course this varies by agreement. I would say I understand the economics of supply and demand. This doesn't mean I have to like it and it's effect locally. I don't see it as a service or contribution and it doesn't make me a slob. Just like I don't have to like Lawyers, Realtors and Landlords. Dang, that sounds like a good country song!

If we want to accept that wild animals species are destined to never survive in their natural habitats because of human avarice, then a zoo is a great solution. Sort of like if you like sweet things, but there's no sugar cane available, saccharine will do.
But, if we refuse to accept that a prison--make no mistake, that's what a confined, fenced urban postage stamp space with no normal feeding, ranging or social structures available is-- then zoos are unequivocally immoral, cruel and wrong.

Well, that's okay to force farmers to pay for monitoring without helping them pay for it. They will either pass the costs on to you in the form of higher food costs or go out of business, in which case the supply will go down and food costs will go up too.

Either way you will pay, and some help at least you might have a chance of getting support for what you want. Otherwise you have a bunch of landowners that contribute to political campaigns fighting you tooth and nail.

Good luck with that.

Thank you for sharing these beautiful pictures. I appreciate them greatly.

Zoos in this country are held to standards. Violations result in loss of accreditation. Loss of accreditation means loss of funding, prestige, respect within the field and no other zoo will loan their animals to you. In fact, other organizations would start stepping in to help "oversee" the place and make recommendations that could lead to closure.

The zoos of today are nothing like the zoos that you may have experienced as a child. The profession is continually evolving. If you're painting all zoos with the same forty year old brush, I'd say you're committing a disservice.

The other two properties he owns nearer to my house on Mission are an old Victorian and a 2-story house next to it near Monterey. Both run down, with trash often on the front lawn, inadequate parking, stuff stored in the front yard. In this case I blame the planning department for giving him a variance to allow apartment type dwellings in this neighborhood of R-1 and R-2 dwellings. Must have seemed like a good idea at the time.

I think the planning department is anti-car anyway and they figure if all the parking spaces are gone on the street then some of us will get rid of our cars and start using mass transit.

How's that working out for them?

In order for your new MD to get access to your old chart, you'll have to sign a waiver. Depending on where your blood was drawn (Quest, PDL), certain offices have electronic access to lab results. I'm guessing you live up in the hills where you never have to encounter an RV parked on your street, but believe me, it's not pretty. And, I'm also concerned that Eling's is not abiding by the conditional use permit that they received. They are a private entity with very specific permits, and they do not have the right to allow camping on this property.

Wonderful photos. Thanks for sharing. To you anti-zoo folks, millions of people learned about other animals, about conservation, about habitat restoration, and care enough to do something about it because of zoos. Most zoo animals live longer than wild animals, are well fed, cared for, and loved, and the zoo makes sure their lives are interesting and enriched. Read Gerald Durrell to understand better. Modern zoos preserve species that would otherwise have gone extinct.

In common areas, they don't clean the lint screen in the dryer, don't clean up spilled laundry detergent, etc. Some people need to be retaught how to live in a building as a human being. 348P again. You assumed things not in evidence. I don't think many landlords would have invested in property if they had any idea how irresponsible large numbers of tenants are. I was appalled when I initially encountered this lack of responsibility. When I was a tenant, I was always a good one, maintaining the property as best I could, and keeping the landlord informed of problems that were theirs to deal with. I was rewarded with good rates and relations. That's how most landlord/ tenant relations should work. Those with "bad landlords" are often "bad tenants" -- not always, but often.

Elings (Trailer) Park

2012-12-07 01:48 PM

My point was: if the City of Santa Barbara had embraced RV vacationers instead of being shortsighted, reactionary and spineless, there would be facilities in existence today that would accommodate RVs.

The image of dirty, disheveled folk always is brought to the forefront. In reality, most RV vacationers believe in daily personal hygiene and have disposable income to burn. These people would, instead of staying in a hotel here, would be staying in an RV, in a park, leaving their money here, taking their memories with them and going back to where ever home is.

The issue with the park hosts, RV vacationers and homeless living in RVs are all separate items. Park hosts will stay, obviously, in the park they are working. RV vacationers would be staying in a family RV "resort".

Being that this city and its inhabitants purport to be so socially conscious, the homeless living in RVs would also be given space. That is what's deemed "fair" these days, is it not?

Your "insight" into anything about me is unwarranted and doesn't belong. That's what some would call "creating a divide". Please refrain in the future.

Water Filters

2012-12-07 01:49 PM

Mountain Spring Water and Rayne are two companies that I believe offer whole house filtration. I'd advise a very good carbon block filtration system. From extensive research I have done, I'd say don't get RO. It's not just that it removes minerals--its that RO water is "aggressive" and will absorb carbon dioxide etc. making it acidic. I did a home experiment (admittedly not rigorous science--but interesting!) in which I boiled RO water in first a glass pot with plastic handle, then a stainless steel pot. The water tasted very very strongly of plastic in the first experiment (presumably from just the plastic handle getting hot and "off-gassing") and then a very strong taste of metal in the second experiment. I then boiled regular (mineralized) spring water in the same two pots and this water did not take on the tastes of plastic or metal. Just interesting. This could be a clue that RO water may remove a lot of bad stuff, but then it can easily re-absorb stuff too.

What about El Capitan Ranch - isnt that a high end RV campground?

Seems that the issue is not the city but the economics of owning/hosting a RV camp. There are simply not enough RV'rs to warrant the costs of running such a facility in SB. Otherwise someone would have built one in Carp or Goleta which are not under the jurisdiction of SB and its zoning.

A Zoo View

2012-12-07 01:52 PM

I knew by posting these pictures, it would create a lot of comments, both negative and positive.

At first I thought there was only one gorilla and he looked at me with those eyes and I couldn't help but feel sorry for him. But a few minutes later around the corner here came the other one and they were having a great time. It made me feel better.

But as several have mentioned, zoos have to meet standards, educate people and help with research so it can't be all bad!

As far as the feet....they belong to a Coot. Have never paid attention to them before. There were several hanging around the zoo and this one was with the Flamingos.

Appreciate all the great comments!

We also have water softer and RO (for drinking water) combo in our house. Our RO is a Zero-Waste system that uses a bit of electricity but as a result does not waste any water in the processing. My recollection from researching RO was that the waste was much higher for normal RO systems, more like 5 to 1 waste to product.

Thank you to the bird people for helping care for and educate others about keeping birds.

We all know that millions of illegals cheat the system and that it costs us all a lot of money. The worst part is they know that they are immune from any prosecution and as such dont care... nice culture we've created. Basically making those who abide by the law pay for the millions who dont...

This is why you HAVE TO carry uninsured motorists coverage if you live in this area... a direct cost to each of us who follow the law.

The knife will fly out of their hands as they grab their groin in agony. After that I will make sure they do as much time as possible.

If they pass this new fee then it is a substantial burden for people that don't want a smart meter. From $120/yr to $288/yr. It would make me think twice.

HIPPA is for protecting your medical records from the unlicensed, the public or those not treating you with your permission.

So, yes, all you need to do is sign over the right to access and they will forward your records from one doctor to the next. If the doc you're seeing decides the bloodwork is out of date for what you're being treated for they may ask you to submit to more bloodwork, or tests from their preferred lab (different labs can have dramatically different level ranges, so it makes sense sometimes.)

Sansum is only great if you want to be bounced between doctors there. They're actually one of the worst in terms of sending stuff out to other doctors outside sansum. It drags on forever!

We solved this issue by creating a hand-made "gift card" with a list of possible things that we could do together, or that we could make happen on her behalf. We added a couple of lines labelled "Your idea here....". The first line was a whale-watching trip on the Condor Express. She went for that one big time! The best gift ever.

Personally, I like the Elephant bar. They do a great seared Ahi in a number of different salads - yes the Ahi is fresh. Have also had some terrific Salmon that was fresh. Just ask the waitperson if whatever you think you want is fresh or frozen. They will tell you. They want you happy. The reason the place is packed and there is usually a line is because the food is good and reasonably priced and the staff is helpful and friendly. Makes for a pleasant experience.

LOL 496P.

The "do not install sticker" only works if you pay the initial fee and the monthly charge. If you opt out of paying, you get a smart meter. If they installed in spite of your paying the fee, then they need to arrange for the old meter to be put back. The contractor goes where he is told to go. If SCE made an error and gave them the wrong address, then SCE needs to fix it.

The fees make sense when you realize that they have to send someone to read your meter when the others are read automatically. That is an expense that the individual must pay. The rest of us, that opt for the smart meter, should not have to pay to have your meter read.

Regardless of Bill Connell's own service or lack thereof, he did California vets a big solid by fighting with the powers that be in Sacramento in their behalf. Because of Bill Connell, California vets who own their own businesses do not pay California sales tax to the state. I'd say that was a pretty darn good thing.

It was a law already on the books but not honored by the Franchise Tax Board -- until Bill Connell fought and won the battle for all California vets.

As installations progress throughout the SCE service territory, meter reader positions will be reduced and eventually eliminated."

With smart meters, there is no reader in a truck. The smart meters use an RF mesh device as part of the 2-way communication between SCE and the meter. No reader, no truck needed.

I guess the opt-out fee is being used partly to pay the remaining meter readers/truck maintenance/fuel/etc.

Elings (Trailer) Park

2012-12-07 05:40 PM

Park hosts are necessary, especially in these trying economic times. Park hosts work a set number of hours per week and in return, they are provided a place to park their RV's. It is a very economical solution for many parks to continue functioning. If it were not for the park hosts at Cachuma Lake, that park would close down due to lack of funds, denying access for everyone. The folks in the Neil Taylor Nature Center, the folks raking leaves, mowing, picking up trash, shoveling ashes out of fire pits, checking boats at the boat ramp, painting curbs and signs, giving tours are all park hosts. Park hosts protect precious monuments and sites by keeping an eye on things, especially at night. Anyone can become a park host so no one is excluded. So don't complain about park hosts. Be thankful that they are there to help, protect, keep parks open, and keep them looking kept up and clean.

Elings (Trailer) Park

2012-12-07 05:54 PM

This topic brings to mind Boyd at the Goleta Pier. He was an AVID lover of fishing and the Pier. He retired, fell on hard times, and found himself living in his RV. After many years, the the County bestowed upon him the title of Pier host. And allowed him to live in his RV on site. Boyd's RV was never a nuisance and he was very far from "dirty, disheveled folk" as commenter 351423P brings to mind in the RVer discussion. And yet, Boyd was otherwise homeless, without his RV.

He got kicked out of the position and was forced to move his RV. I haven't heard any updates and I can only hope and pray that Boyd is well, healthy and good.

As to multiple RVs at Elings, I would say that as long as they are neat and tidy, no trash, let them stay if they aren't a nuisance or threat to park users.

Maybe you should've let him drown? Not that I'm anti-saving-animals, but that's how they evolve and learn how to propagate as a species -- the ones who know to stay away from the ocean are successful. Interfering in the learning of evolution of a species maybe harms their learning curve? But to be honest, I might've done the same thing as you. Not sure it's helpful, though. Species learn through mistakes and that's what makes them survive stronger.

The first photo made me double take - looked like he was eating a big toe (with red nail polish). I'm Glad you rescued him.

Pearl Harbor

2012-12-07 09:55 PM

Yes, with 9/11 being our new "Pearl Harbor", the original loses some significance. Plus, it's not a "significant" anniversary, like the 25th or the 50th or the 75th. I'm sure the 100th will be signified as it should be. It's just a matter of significant events trumping less-remembered events.

Cliff, the King Snake

2012-12-07 09:57 PM

1-2 weeks old and twelve inches?!!

Hope the mouse was well-defrosted, and that's good advice on "teaching" him to eat live prey. Keep an eye on the heating element after feeding - a friend had a snake die when the power cord was damaged, heat went off and snake couldn't digest.

If no herpetologists chime in here, do start by calling some reputable pet shops, I'm thinking the one on Broadmoor/upper State across from Farmer Boy (Sean at Sensational Pets (805) 898-1500) or the one on Calle Real -- The Pet House (805) 967-7716

At least you didn't find an iguana. Snakes are much easier.

In Australia the entire population commemorates Anzak Day with solemnity - they never forget the life sacrifices of their involvement in WW II, even decades afterwards.

Good for you! Thanks for the rescue! He's a beautiful creature and no more than letting a dog run off the cliff, survival of the fittest!, should one leave a creature to drown.

As for what to do, how about returning him to the Wilcox area, if there's enough wild left there. Someone at the SBWCN probably would know what to do or could find someone who would know. I don't have their number and their web site hotline is not available via my iPad or iPhone, but you should be able to find it. Or call the zoo or the Museum of Natural History, ask for the reptile curator

Please report back what you do with "Cliff"!

Natureboy might have a point. But I think that there is also a chance some human-related activity caused the mother to perish, or led to him/her being stranded along the rocks. That, and odds are so tough for wildlife nowadays with cars, pavement, chemicals, global warming, etc. I am thinking it's OK to lend a helping hand. Kind of like trying to tip the scales in favor of the animals we've interfered with. Even if we help the losers and less than bright ones sometimes.

EDDIEKID you certainly make a good point. It's hard to decide whether us humans should accept the effect we have on wildlife, or try to un-do that effect. We certainly do hamper their ability to exist in the natural world... Ugh. It's a difficult question to answer. But my ultimate answer is that, since we DO encroach into their world, that they should learn to evolve around us, as awful as that seems to be.

A Zoo View

2012-12-07 10:58 PM

How disheartening that some people still believe what they have been spoon fed for years regarding zoos. The primary lesson children learn from visiting zoos is that their parents and others condone animal captivity. The primary reason zoos exist is to make money.

For each and every one of you who hold forth that imprisonment benefits the animals by lengthening their lives and that there is "enrichment" enough, and still you never question what zoos do with their surplus animals, all I can reply is: Please, please allow me keep you in a small enclosure for years on end. Allow me to feed you, put you on display and subject you to chattering, camera-toting humans. You will have no freedom and a lifetime of boredom is guaranteed. No need to forage and mate as you choose. All such decisions will be made for you. It won't matter to me whether or not you wish to partake in this venture.

I will be your master and overseer. When your cute babies are too grown to be considered a real draw, I will trade them to other zoos, sell them for canned hunts or to private collectors.

If it's okay for the elephants and lions and the gorillas and the giraffes to endure such unnatural lives, why can't you become part of my lucrative and educational exhibit? Don't worry about your gift of speech. If you protest too much, I will have veterinarians on hand to help with that small problem.

Too bad the zoo animals can't speak for themselves. Now that would be educational for you.

Hot Dog Guy

2012-12-07 11:39 PM

Bill Connel was a great human being. He would offer the poor people who were waiting for some time to shop at Christmas Unity a free Meal of Hot Dogs and whatever else he had. It is true that he was injured in the ring but he did get the law changed so veterans do not have to collect Sales Tax from Citizens. It was the government's position that the taxes were not paid by the Veterans but by their customers and it was Bill's contention that Veterans and especially wounded Veterans should not be burdened by doing the governments work .Bill had attorneys advice not to pursue his mission and capitulate and pay the sales tax. His ongoing fight is truly worthy of commendation. I would like to address the negative connotation by one of the responders by saying. Justice Learned Hand of the Supreme court stated that it was every taxpayers duty and responsibility not to pay any more tax than he had to. It is not tax evasion to pay as little as you are rightfully entitled to. It is tax evasion practiced by members of Government to refuse to pay any tax. The sharks did not get Bill, but I have no idea what he is up to.
