Organization that Supports Families

But here's the great thing about fundraising for something like this -- if you don't like the idea, don't donate. If you do, you can! Problem solved.

Personally, I can't afford a $1000 day trip for my family. We've been saving for nearly a year now for our next vacation, which won't be for another year, because we still have more saving to do. But I could, and would, chip in a few bucks for this family. We have enough - more than we need but not so much that we aren't extremely thankful for all that we have. As such, we can easily imagine NOT having enough.

Aside from money, guns are the best thing a burglar can find while robbing a home. They're great--there's an ever-present market for untraceable guns amongst criminals, so they're ready-cash. They come in handy if you run into the homeowner too, who will most likely end up being shot while looking for the gun he bought to defend his home.

Each of us chooses to help in our own way, or not, and no one's choice of who or what to help should be criticized as it is a personal choice motivated by our past and future.

Personally I would rather give a quarter to a person that might use it for alcohol than pass up a chance to help a person that might really be hungry. The scammer will reap what they sow.

Leadbetter Closed Due to Sewage Spi...

2012-12-04 08:00 AM

Leadbetter: "Dibblee’s mansion had been sold in 1908 to Frederick W. Leadbetter, a papermill baron from the Columbia River, who had converted the flat area above La Playa Stadium into a private polo field. The beach below is still known as Leadbetter Beach. The quake damaged the Castle so badly that it was razed in 1932 and WPA workmen used its stone blocks to build the revetment along the wall of Cliff Drive from Montecito Street to the City College entrance. The Leadbetters did not choose to rebuild the landmark, and moved to Montecito. In 1954 the estate became the campus of Santa Barbara City College."

The problem is not an unwillingness to help families go to Disneyland or to have any other fun adventure. The problem is, what about all the other families and children that are likely to have nothing at Christmas time, not even a Christmas tree or any gifts to open. Who makes the decision about who should be helped and who is forgotten. That is the problem with a request like this one. Many of us would like to help every child have as happy Christmas as possible, but most of us cannot afford much more than helping our own families and friends.

While the death of any human being is always to be regretted and deplored the cause of this death, and more among non-police, is directly related to drug laws which ignore the right of individuals to control their own bodies. Drug laws were instituted as a means of asserting control over Americans and to benefit the corporations then extending their business strategies into new sales areas. Prohibition was funded by Rockefeller to displace alcohol which was in competition with gasoline as a fuel for automobiles. Marijuana was outlawed to benefit Hearst, who had vast stands of trees which he wanted to sell for pulp into the paper industry. Industrial hemp was competition.

California has let the FED's know we want legalized pot. While I've never used pot myself I am well aware many view it as both a medical necessity and as a recreational resource. I don't use it. But that is my choice. Others should be free to chose for themselves.

The cost of enforcement is enormous, feeding occasional users into the prison system, which is now run for profit as well.

Industrial hemp is a green product. No one can get 'high' on it but every material needed to build a house, except glass, can be produced from it as a raw material. Legalizing Industrial hemp could turn around the economy of our state.

Now, think about this issue again and google the number of deaths of ordinary citizens, forgotten except by their families, who died during swat raids or arrests related to marijuana.

Lots of people for sending this 'deserving' family to Disneyland, and only one person willing to buy just one ticket. So it's a great idea, but someone else can pay for it, right? I know, let's ask Moonbeam if he has some money left in the pot. I'm sure a few college students won't mind paying some extra fees.

Sarcasm aside, all the folks touting this as a great idea need to get off your collective behinds if you want to see it realized. Thinking good thoughts is not the same as action. Your opinions mean nothing without it.

Out of curiosity, how long as OP lived in Santa Barbara? The Castillo Street underpass is below sea level, so water seeps up and destroys the tarmac from underneath. Caltrans cannot keep up with the deterioration.

There is a permanent solution, but there is no money. Both State Street and Garden Street are boat sections; that is, they are sections of reinforced concrete that literally float on top of the water/soil. Pumps are also used to keep the underpass free of water if it happens to seep up, or if it rains heavily.

Long story short, it's been that way for years, and for lack of any money from a local government (the City thinks bulb-outs are a much better use of resources), Caltrans isn't going to fix it.

Thanks, everyone, for your kind comments on my photography. To answer a couple of questions above:
I did not use HDR (high dynamic range) processing. I shot in RAW format and used Lightroom 3 to lighten the shadows. I then increased the black point to give the images a little "punch." Lightening the shadows brought out some luminance noise, which I reduced in Lightroom. On a couple of the images, I applied negative clarity, which resulted in kind of a "dreamy" look.
Regarding the Leica, mine is an old M4 film camera, which I have not used for some time. These photos and most of the others on my site were taken with a Canon 5D MkII. I have also used a Hasselblad extensively, and most all of the travel photos on my site were taken with this, but it has been idle since I "went digital." I have also used an old Rolleiflex and an old Speed Graphic.

037, I've lived a block from there for many years. This was one of Barney's Bits, back when he worked for the News Press, the never ending water on the road.

Some years ago a system was installed that is used in missile silos. Electronics placed in the walls would keep the water from reaching the street. The system worked great for a number of years. But that's history.

What's happening now is Cal Trans comes out once a month and fills the pot holes with asphalt. But the steady source of water turns it to mush and the bumps just get bigger. Now I use the other lane.

041has an idea I agree with. Install an elevated grate two inches above the pavement. That might help.

The only halfway decent station in town is KJEE, but they can play too much corporate junk for my tastes. SiriusXM is the best option for radio if you're willing to pay for it. Pandora is ok, but I'm not a huge fan since they tend to repeat the same songs over and over again. Radio in SB is a sad state. KRUZ wasn't even that good, but since there are no other options in town it was #2 by default. KTYD just plays the same stuff over and over again that everyone's been listening to since the 60's & 70's. I don't see how people aren't tired of listening to the same stuff for the past 40 years (yes people, the 70's were 40 years ago).

It sounds like the original design and build of the underpants were at fault to begin with. Why doesn't CalTrans/City of SB sue the architect and contractor to get the funds to get it fixed?

Better yet, the citizens should sue CalTrans/City of SB for negligence. It was the only way to fix the Rancho Vista slide (Rte 144) which CalTrans totally screwed up.

Good luck on getting the road fixed.

I'm no expert but I don't think the sea water leeches all the way into downtown. Many buildings and homes have basements. Wouldn't they be flooding like this?

Look at the Garden street underpass on the 101. It's dry unless it's raining.

I believe the water at Castillo is fresh water from a spring.

059, I think Cal Trans was planning on doing just that, but I heard this many moons ago.

If you have a computer or tablet on the web with decent speakers you will find there are hundreds of Shoutcast stations in every genre you can imagine. Some echo terrestrial radio stations elsewhere and some are hobbyists. A lot of public and college stations too but often at low bit rates. I broadcast my own when I like using Winamp so I can stream whatever I want to friends or around the house. Winamp is available for Mac, Windows, & Android and makes browsing them easy. Itunes also can stream these, some versions of Windows Media player too. I like a little free Windows app called Screamer Radio. Winamp on my tablet.
In you car that's no solution. My favorite XM station was dropped when they merged with Sirius but there are still a ton of them you may like but it's not free. Google "santa barbara fm radio stations" and you'll find complete lists with formats.

Once the contract was over, (and the phone paid for), I go in once a year and pay Verizon $100 deposit for use.

It costs me $1 a day (ONLY on days I use it) and 10 cents per minute.

More blocks of time are $50 each, and minutes can NOT be saved or rolled over, but I seldom use the entire $100 in a year.

These chiefs never seem to stay very long. The pessimistic side of me wonders if they only stay long enough to qualify for the increased pension due to the chief's salary? Plus they can also sell back their vacation and sick time to the County and increase their pension that way.

The next step for them is to get hired back in some capacity as a temporary employee so they can receive both their pension and the salary like that guy in Guadalupe.

I'm not saying it's not a hard job, but it does seem to be well compensated as compares to many people working in the public sector.

AT&T GoPhone has a similar plan, pay as you go but recently they added flat rate plans starting at $25 (250 minutes local or long distance) or $50 a month (unlimited minutes) , no more $1 a day for use! You can add amounts as low as $10 with limited time frame. $100 lasts for a year. My $25/mo plan charges for data $.01 /5kb, the higher plans have unlimited data. Texting is included. I can pay online in seconds.
They have a few phones to buy from $50 up including a smart phone, no plan required. All the options are online but I found the staff helpful at the Camino Real Marketplace store.
However if you really don't use $25 a month its pretty much the same as your plan now. The $1 a day for use plan wasted a lot of money because I get so many spam telemarketers. If your calls average less then 8 minutes the $.25/min plan no daily fee actually saves you. I'm very happy with a $25/mo plan and my simple flip phone.

There are probably people on edhat who have been here long enough know that sea water encroaches into town.Used to be that the springs and creeks kept the water clean buy pushing saltwater into the ocean.Population increases have taken all that fresh water away from the naturally occuring hydraulics that push seawater out.In In the late 60's and early 70's we had volantary water rationing.I was a kid and could'nt wash my moms car because there was not enough water than either.Santa Barbaras old Terra-cotta sewer system is a hundred years old in some places still.Broken by many earthquakes large and small some of the sewage leaks, runs downhill, winds up in the creeks.Again, not enough hydraulics keeps the pollution counts high at the beaches when it rains and in the creeks in the dry months.Sorry If i expanded the sewer spill conversation to much.

I think that what the OP may be asking is how easy the phones designed for seniors are to use. My gripe with virtually all cell phones is the teensy-weensy little buttons on most cell phones that don't seem to be designed for big American fingers. Of the mainstream cell phones out there, the easiest one to dial is the iPhone. Of course, the iPhone is so electronically sophisticated that it seems a shame to pay the high cost for it if you aren't going to use all the iPhone features--which I'm sure a lot of seniors don't want in the first place. The couple of old people I know who have Jitterbugs seem to like their user-friendliness, but I hear that old technology can be a problem as far as coverage, dropped calls, etc., goes.

I would disagree that iPhones are the easiest for seniors to dial. You have to open the phone app, then open the keypad and/or contacts list, then hit "call". And there's no dial tone, which the Jitterbug has and many seniors enjoy. Though I've never used a Jitterbug, what I've seen of them looks perfect as a simple phone for a senior.

Ever heard of "the real McCoy?" It refers to a Prohibition-era rum runner named William McCoy, who was captured when his blockade-runner was engaged by the Coast Guard. McCoy fired on the Coast Guard vessel with a heavy machine gun mounted on his ship, but he was captured and spent 9 months in prison.

The difference between then and now? Well, McCoy was dealing in a mind-altering substance that had been criminalized by religious moralists who wanted to run other people's lives.

Is that really so different from marijuana? Actually, it is. While no one ever died by consuming marijuana, alcohol is medically considered to be a poison that has killed hundreds of thousands of people over the centuries.

I find it interesting that the person/people that always has a big problem with pictures of car crashes isn't complaining about voyeurism and schadenfreude today. It seems like the only time he or she or they get upset about looking at wrecked cars is when the urban hikers post the pictures and the story. Which leads me to believe that whoever is complaining and attacking the urban hikers is from a local news outlet or outlets that don't get to post the urban hiker's pictures and stories. I have suspected that was the reason for the complaining and personal attacks, and now this just confirms my hunch. There is so much petty competition in the "news" business it's ridiculous

Even if Mary Jane was legal, there would be some other cargo to smuggle. The islands, and other parts of our coast, i.e. the Ranch are probably thought of as easy pickens since they are somewhat remote. Unless our maritime security is beefed up, this problem will only get worse.

Blackhawk Helicopter

2012-12-04 12:58 PM

Turns out 932 was right about the capture. From CNN, after the incident.

The panga boat fled.

Around 5 a.m. Sunday, about four hours after the initial crash, the panga was located about 20 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, according to the criminal complaint.

Coast Guard officers pulled up and ordered the boat's occupants, at gunpoint, to exit the boat. They refused to comply, and the panga raced away. It then stalled, refused further orders, and sped away again, the complaint said.

In the third try, a Coast Guard officer pepper-sprayed both men on the panga. That boat's driver was detained after a struggle with Coast Guard officers, while his passenger was "detained without incident," the criminal complaint said.

The suspects had entered the United States "illegally from Mexico," according to the document.

Meija-Leyva told investigators "he was taking gasoline to some lost friends north of Los Angeles," and Beltran-Higuera said he'd been offered $3,000 to transport gas to a waiting panga boat off the U.S. coast.

Multi Vehicle Accident

111: I am one of the people who doesn't particularly like all the UH's posts (many are fantastic, but when they show people's bodies, or are snapping pics as someone's home burns to the ground, well I tend to think less of those posts...). I think this post is definitely different. Images of the AFTERMATH of a horrific crash intrigue most of us. I personally would not have liked these photos if they were of the people being pulled from vehicles or loaded into ambulances (regardless of who took the photos). But this is the same stuff you'd see in a paper - aftermath pics.
Some times I think they cross a line I'm not alone in that feeling. I'm not the person who complains of voyeurism, as I'm just fine with it - just not to the extent of showing images of people in dire situations. I think UHs sometimes fail to show any restraint when it comes to pics, and in that way they remind me more of paparazzi than photo journalists or people on the hunt for news.

0116.... Funny, lots of people die from alcohol overdosing every year.... it's called alcohol poisoning. It is a poison, you know, and ought to be illegal for the same reasons the other drugs you discredit are.

Also more people get killed in one day at the hands of someone under the influence of alcohol than under the influence of LSD or marijuana - EVER. So how you can defend your favorite drug and slag on another that is less harmful is pretty irrational.

I'm no doper but some arguments ought to be kept to oneself.

I think their reports have continued to improve but I was offended at the start as it seemed to pursue their hobby they would intrude, however I have come to appreciate their reports and overcome the skepticism I initially felt about them. In this case, the cops acted quickly and justice prevailed, so that seems to argue against the use of guns. IMO, no good can come from a gun, even if you use it against a bad guy. As far as this burglar goes, I heard from a reliable source that he's addicted to Meth. And that he has a wife and two kids. They would suffer if he was shot, as would the shooter. As it is, his family will be affected by the consequences of his actions.

Not knowing what business he had gone to, and after she switched to saying that it was her daughter who had gone into the building, I asked if she had her daughters cell phone number. She pulled out a Jitterbug phone and handed it to me. It seemed very simple to use but before I found which number was her daughters her husband came out of the building. Long story short, my brief experience with a Jitterbug phone left me impressed.

Privates schools are not "one size fits all"

You first need to completely and objectively assess such things as your child's educational and emotional needs, abilities, independence, scholastic and social skills.

Then take the time observe in the various schools to find the environment that suits him or her best both academically and socially.

If you don't find a fit that seems appropriate, stay in the public schools for now and keep your future options open.

Virgin XL mobile is very cheap ($7/mon) and does pretty much whatever you want (take pictures, etc.). You purchase your phone set at Radio Shack for $20. Virgin is a pre-pay plan and you have to keep about a $30 balance. It is great for someone who just uses it for emergencies, travel, and mostly outgoing calls. VirginmobileUSA.com or 1-888-322-1122.

Cell Phones for Seniors

I have a Trac phone. If they have a model with larger, easier to see buttons, that might be an option. You buy the phone for little or nothing, and buy a time card every year for $99 (no tax) (Kmart, Best Buy= same price). There's no pay per minute, and I am hard pressed to make a dent in my 800+ yearly minutes. Only had a problem with a connection one time. Plus, Trac phone service people VERY NICE.

If you yak and yak all day and 1/2 the night and text . . . then you might need some kind of unlimited minutes phone plan. Everyone I know who has a "plan" gripes about it.

@092. You pay $600 per year for a cellphone? Holy moly.

Private Grade School

Our son attended Laguna Blanca for 7th & 8th grades. At the time, it was an option/opportunity we chose over the public schools. Having experienced this wonderful school, I really wished he had started at an earlier age, but economically that was not possible. Laguna Blanca has a warm, caring atmosphere where academics, sports and the arts come together in an enriching environment. The teachers are engaged and first rate. They also offer scholarships. Ultimately, he choose public (Dos Pueblos High School) over staying at Laguna, however, it too is a wonderful school with plenty of advanced curriculum and honors classes. Even though he spent a short time in private school, he felt miles ahead of his fellow students at DPHS. You might want to consider saving a few bucks by starting your child off in private school, segueing later into public high school.

053. As a local who drives, bikes, walks and rides MTD, I love your comeback.

Too bad more people don't ride their bikes. Castillo under the highway is a bad spot for bicyclists. I used to have lots of fun trying to negotiate it on my road bike en route to SBCC. The southern route being more problematic. It's always wet and pothole ridden, it seems.

I get a kick out of people not knowing basic SB facts. Good to bone up on things like proximity to sea level and best roads to avoid, especially during certain times of the year.

In '95, those yahoos diving into that seasonal pool at Garden St. were pea-brained. That water was filthy.

Those who would question an officer's use of force should really stop to think about what we demand of them. They aren't allowed to act in self-defense unless directly threatened. (It's almost 'don't fire unless fired upon.') They have to make split second decisions in rapidly evolving situations that have potentially lethal consequences to them, to the perpetrator/suspect, and to innocent bystanders. No matter what they do, they are subject to a thorough investigation after the fact by numerous folks, including those with a chip on their shoulder due to some past perceived injustice by some other officer. It's an impossible job, and I and most other fair or sane people will almost always give the officer the benefit of the doubt.

Shroom I.D.

2012-12-04 05:20 PM

Probably Lepiota rachodes, the shaggy parasol. I'm basing this on several assumptions:
1. It is growing on soil (not in lawn, as does Chlorophyllum molybdites).
2. The spore color is white when mature (C. molybdites spores are gray/green.
3. It bruises orange when handled (but so does C. molybdites, but not as strongly.
4. It is growing in December (C. molybdites usually appears in warm summer to late summer months).

The scientific name of the shaggy parasol has changed many times, from Lepiota rachodes to Macrolepiota rachodes, etc., but is currently listed as Chlorophyllum brunneum. The shaggy parasol is considered edible but the chances of confusing it with Chlorophyllum molybdites are high. Not for beginners to experiment with.

What a devolution and thread jack! I hope some readers have learned something about city resources and phone numbers, which are listed in the public info posting about this incident, or that those who observe bubbling man hole covers (probably nasty smelling and looking fluid) will at least call 911.
Water cascading down the cliffs, per Quad Lix?! C'mon people! I may be sounding holier than thou, but this is outrageous. Yes, maybe the woman did call, but I doubt she called 911. This is one case where calling emergency for what may be considered a non-emergency appears valid.

"The City has staff on-call at all times and the public is urged to report any suspected sewage spills as quickly as possible. During regular business hours people should call 564-5413. After hours, nights and weekends please call 963-4286."

And yes, I've now learned it's LEADbetter. I thought it was LEDbetter. I've lived here all my life. Thanks for that.

I've mentioned this before and I know it's not a recommendation, just general advice, but be very aware that all the local family law attorneys work with one another and confer "off record" regarding settlements and terms. It is not, strictly speaking, collusion, but it's something always to be aware of. Also, gender is always an issue, yours, your attorney's etc. in how things may be perceived. I don't mean for this to sound sexist (I'm a male, had a female attorney who was "okay," hence no direct recommendation) and I did prevail, but it was no fun for anyone and, as even some lawyers will admit, only they (the attorneys) really come out ahead in the end.

Do we criticize and castigate private businesses for giving bonuses to executives of failing/failed companies? We do. I want to point out it's not much different. I hope the shareholders have their say! And taxpayers, of course.

Sorry I entered the fray but it was a hole big enough to drive a truck through.

Private Grade School

2012-12-04 06:50 PM

I agree with Rob Egenolf's suggestions. I grew up going to public school. I became a teacher and have taught for 20 years in the public schools. I believe in the public school system and am so tired of all of the public school bashing out there.

Having said that, we moved our daughter out of public school in the middle of 2nd grade to Montessori Center School on Fairview. It was the best decision we ever could have made for her. We visited and observed at several private schools as well as Open Alternative, and SB Charter. We felt that MCS offered the most well rounded program as you listed above in your post, as well as an approach to the student's academic, social and emotional growth. We are quite impressed with the staff and their willingness to work with a diverse set of student needs. We have been there for a little over 3 years now and are cringing at the thought of leaving for junior high in another year. We don't want to leave.

Our daughter is happy at MCS. She actually likes going to school again. Her public school experience was not a positive one for her as she was bored and they did not accommodate for her above grade level academics and lower maturity level. Montessori is perfectly designed for her highs and lows and all in between needs.

Be sure to observe and look at academics, social, emotional aspects as well as the extra curriculars. If possible, get out of your own head and really observe from your son's point of view. You know his strengths and weaknesses. 233P also made a great point. Look for a child in the class(es) who reminds you of your child and see how he/she is responding to the environment and staff. Good luck in your decision making.

Private Grade School

@ 268 What, specifically, are you talking about? I would venture to say that drugs are on any junior high and high school campus anywhere. It being a private school has nothing to do with it. If you make accusations, you should be able to give specifics to back them up. Otherwise those statements can, and should, be considered as nothing more than incediary devices designed to incite shock and upset.

And not all the families that are sending their kids to private school are that well off. There are scholarships at private schools too, you know.

It really depends upon many factors--what are the circumstances, allegations, etc? Who is the attorney on the other side? Some attorneys are better working with some other attorneys. How much money do you have to spend? There is no generic answer to this question. I am an attorney (not family law) and I have seen these things blow up out of all proportion, get side-tracked, nearly bankrupt people, etc. Sorry, but this is hard stuff. Be careful.

Am a senior with an AT&T Iphone who thought it would be easy and relatively inexpensive. It's relatively easy to use, but the number of important calls which are "dropped" in parts of Santa Barbara is disappointing. AT&T said they would look into the dropped calls issue, but I never heard from them. Thanks for the reminder to contact them again. Now I understand how cell phone entrepreneurs can afford to buy a $35 million Ferrari. Yes, keep it simple with an easy, inexpensive plan that has no surprises.

"This family only suffers from a wealth/fun deficit." My husband was a foster child for a good portion of the first five years of his life. I'll have to let him know he was only suffering from a very common wealth/fun deficit. Coincidentally, when he was finally adopted at the age of five (almost past the age that a lot of foster children are lucky enough to be adopted ever...) his newly adopted parents took him to Disney World in Florida for the first time ever. It blew his mind after years of abuse, neglect, abandonment and malnutrition. Tune in to the world of foster kids, please. Are there really wells in downtown Santa Barbara that have depleted groundwater so that we have have saltwater intrusion 1/2 mile inland? I'm surprised that we have the kind of vegetation that's currently there.
Do we have a natural spring that flows only when it rains and floods the underpass?
Do we have adequate diversion of rainwater from ground that's higher than the underpass?
I drove south through the underpass last night, and I think you could do serious damage to a car driving the speed limit over some of these big ones. I bet you could lose a case of beer in some of these potholes.

I teach at one of the local high schools and have seen many students come to my school from many different elementary / jr. high backgrounds.

The one thing I can say is this: great kids come from anywhere, including some of the "worst" public schools and some of the "best" private and public schools in town. Conversely, horrible kids come from some of the "best" private and public schools as well as some of the "worst".

After many years of teaching, I have concluded that the single biggest factor in how successful a kid is in high school both socially and academically is NOT the school he or she came from, it's the parents (by far!)

BTW every teacher knows this.

From there to LCJHS (Core Knowledge) and then San Marcos.
They are both thriving, engaged, bright and grounded.
I would not select a school that someone else tells you is right for your kid. Let your kid tell, or show you what is best for him/her. If ou are paying attention, you will know.
