Just happy to see that the teddys did the trick. Bet they will have a special place in their hearts for a long time to come. Yes, I know that the Assistance League provides these bears because I am a regular contributor to this organization. We can always use new contributors for anyone in the area who have things, time, or funds to contribute. Many thanks to all for a safe outcome for all parties involved.

WooHoo!! Isn't that wonderful. Reduce that carbon footprint, and in the process the earth's (totally natural) heating / cooling cycle will be slowed by 0.001 seconds. Now watch the rest of the supermarkets follow suit, and it starts costing $8.49 for a quart of milk.

We drove north past this fire at 4:40 pm, about an hour after it started. Flames we jumping up pretty high. Really glad the NB lanes were open, but they were slowed incredibly by all the gawkers taking photos with their cell phones (thanks). At that time the backup was only 7 miles, but I knew it would eventually back up solidly to SB...which it did. Ugh.

Look at it like this: All you retired public sector pensioners, firefighters, police, teachers, special school programs and the like being budget slashed to the bone....would you like a second chance at getting your promised benefits?....Oil revenue and the jobs it brings and the tax revenues from those jobs would pay you those things. Otherwise, no chance. You will have "destroyed the village in order to save it" It isn't a question of "if" drilling will resume in the channel, but "when and who gets the upper hand negotiating the contracts". Votes like this one that Capps made just weaken the public's hand when the Inevitable comes. Then we will beg the oil companies to drill here and won't have a damn thing to say about it.

i had dr. aguirre on micheltorena street do a colonoscopy and it was a piece of cake. after arriving at 8:30 a.m. only had to wait about 15 minutes after checking in and then it took less then 25 minutes then i was picked up by my wife and was out of there and in the car and she drove me home. the whole thing only took an hour and a half at most. i was expecting the worse but the procedure was not worth stressing about--i was medicated and awake the whole time and I felt little discomfort during or after the procedure. i felt so good later on that i wanted to go on a bike ride that afternoon but my wife said no.

FLICKA has the classic illogical argument. Even IF it could be shown that alcohol is 10x worse than marijuana, that is no reason to LEGALIZE marijuana. That's a reason to make alcohol ILLEGAL. Which ain't happening. So move on already. To the stoners out there....if you want to see marijuana legalized, the only way to do it is to allow big pharma to control and sell it. Which for all practical purposes cannot happen, because pot can be grown anywhere. For the same reason that oil companies refuse to allow our gov't to make laws requiring cars to not have internal combustion engines, big pharma will never allow our gov't to legalize pot. Pot use among high schoolers has climbed every year and is shockingly high (pun intended), just as our ranking in the world in school performance has decreased every year. The two are definitely correlated.

Excellent point about the necessity of funding the massive public employee pension liabilities that have already been rung up and need for new sources of revenues. Though what a waste of valuable local and natural resource assets if they only get used to pay for past public employee services, and not innovative and new ones. Pumping oil will only make those on the public trough even more greedy and irresponsible, and that is really unhealthy for the "environment". I put my vote on municipal bankruptcy first, because that brings necessary reform; not just one more piggy trough for more public employee excesses.

Been very disastisfied with my girlfriend's service lately. Streaming Netflix has become a complete joke, as we have to stop and wait for more of the video to buffer. Its been like this for weeks, so she called Cox the other day to ask why this all of a sudden seems to be a normal thing. They said thats normal, and that the internet wasn't really designed for streaming video. Considering she pays about $100 a month for basic cable and internet, I'd expect a better answer than that. They have a monopoly here and they know it.

How on earth can anyone compare this obscure location to the commuter traffic intense, tourism traffic intense SF Ferry Building? Looks like out of town yuppie planners are still running amok in this town with their Urban Village nonsense. While there are a number of high-end restaurants clustered around this area catering to the former Arlington Theater "symphony" crowds, it is not an upscale neighborhood because of the very large concentration of fixed income senior housing and Housing Authority projects. And since these are mandated low-income units, this neighborhood will not be significantly changing ever, which is why Von's was the way that it was. This is not NIMBYISM. This is fact and demographics.

It happens a lot with Cox cable. It's either a weak signal or physical interference on your actual cable. Check to see if there are any sharp kinks, twists or bends in your cable. That should help with the worst of it but it won't help with the general decrease in the quality of the originating signal.

I know two survivors of single-car accidents. One had a strange gust of wind come through the car (windows open) which blew something into her face; she says she remembers a magazine flapping, and squinting, and then nothing... she was in the hospital for months with broken parts, but was eventually mended. The other, my brother, was driving at night after a rainstorm, rounded a bend and just kept going around, never saw what happened, drove right off the road and slid down a hill, coming to rest against a tree, which saved his family. Only minor injuries there. These were both good, attentive drivers. No one should think they can't be distracted or an accident can't happen to them. That's why they call it an "accident."

Avoid the fast lane late at night. If there is a wrong way driver on the freeway, they are under they tend to stay to their right lane (which is your left hand side or the fast lane) and they will veer to the right if they see the approaching headlights of cars rightfully proceeding in the proper lanes. Pull to your left and you may be able to avoid them if you know what the impaired driver's most usual action will be.

2925... it could be happening to other channels that the OP hasn't noticed yet. Yes, it's more common with some less than mainstream channels like TCM, A&E or TLC but I've been having it with CNN and sometimes HBO. Switching to RG6 helped a couple of years ago but the problem is re-occurring. Either there is greater demand for the signal so it gets weaker further from site of origin or Cox is saving pennies per subscriber by shaving signal strength. It could be Cox and/or it could be the cable. No way of diagnosing from here in 1000 characters or less.

941, I guess people can justify anything if it's for the almighty dollar, then? If someone is a good business person, then that's just fine. I do agree with you on one point, though. Everyone has the choice to boycott or patronize any open marketplace business. Some of us have a conscience though and it makes it hard to know that people are not willing to live in peace with others.....but they're willing to take their money to make a profit. Pretty hard to swallow, no matter how much batter and spices they put on it.

I can't wait to patronize the new Chik-Fil-A. Do not do business with them if you choose not to do so but at least educate yourself on the truth. Despite all of the misinformation, they do not discriminate in serving the public or in their hiring practices, nor have they ever done so. They treat their employees and customers with the utmost respect. They do close their business so their employees have an opportunity to rest, spend time with family and friends, and worship if they choose to do so. They must be doing something right as their business has expanded and done quite well since 1946. Last year they did more than 4 billion dollars in business.

Interesting that they were posting to their Facebook page up until last week and recently released their summer catalog. Perhaps their private equity owners and partners (Sverica Int'l and Gart Capital) suddenly decided their businesses weren't getting any better in this recession despite the merger in December last year and fired everyone.... you know, like someone who is in the public spotlight a lot these days but I won't mention by name lest I get deleted.

Remodel or Move? |
2012-07-30 12:46 PM |
|
We've moved up twice, last time to a good school area and a bigger home. Prices are still quite low (your new property tax basis), though under $1M is already competitive. Interest rates are crazy low. If you can qualify, I recommend moving to a bigger home, preferably with some updating already done. We did private school at our former home for a year. No tax break on that $16k tuition, and enrolling a second child was out of the question. We've had excellent teachers at public school and some good, involved parents. These two factors are key. The few advantages of private school are not worth the cost in my book and we enjoy the diversity. Good luck.

I think that the sudden assumption when people do something crazy is that they had bath salts. It's a new thing that we recently heard about so the trend is to label everything as being caused by bath salts. I think that both the usage and the most likely incorrect reporting of usage are bull. Didn't they determine that the "zombie" attacker that chewed up that homeless guy's face was in face NOT under the influence of bath salts and only drug they found in his system was marijuana? So it's too hard to know what is going on with people that get nutty like this.

Notice that up until recent, kids didn't have the same social media devices they do today. The number of factors contributing to development immediately falsifies your classic illogical argument that drugs are the sole cause of problems with kids. 549: Your price figures assume that every dealer and middleman is accepting wholesale and making no profit.

994, being somewhere at a certain time is not an invitation for rape. Being a girl is not an invitation for rape. Rape is NEVER the victim's fault, and backward thinking like this is a big, big reason so many rapes go unreported and so many rapists go unprosecuted. How about we instead start educating ALL of our children and peers, not just the "little girls," about the dangers of being raped AND about the morality of raping someone?

Do you need any help subduing them for that process? ;) Roger, I'm sorry for what you went through, Dude. :( Any of you who feel some weird urge to have sex with children... GO GET HELP. Go see a shrink. Don't let it go from desire to action. And if you have acted on that desire, still go see a shrink and get it stopped. And tell the shrink who your victims were so he/she can make sure they get help, too! Yeah, you will probably go to jail if you've already acted on it. But do you want MORE victims on your conscience??? Do you want to go so far down the road that you no longer have a conscience? That you start hunting for little kids with other pedophiles?? You really want that in your future?

The other day I saw someone in a white 4-door sedan start to change lanes into the lane a motorcycle was in. The motorcyclist saw it, shifted the left hand side of the lane, and gave the woman several finger signals that I think adequately described what he thought of her driving. The motorcyclist had a passenger sitting behind him. Both were wearing helmets and from what I remember appropriate motorcycle gear. The women went back into her lane and slowed down. I had the feeling she was embarrassed about her mistake, because she drove very meekly for a long time. Glad no-one was hurt then. Glad this family is SAFE. Wish the SUV driver had stopped. :P

Using any sort of chemical to abort the normal emotional and cognitive development of young people is a recipe for disaster. Life does have pain and struggles until one finds the right (non-chemically dependent) path for themselves. And you can't make up for lost years to drugs or booze that stunted that necessary emotional seasoning.

When I read the name of the ranch it brought back memories of a jury trial where I served on the jury back in the late 1980s. In Judge Adams' courtroom, supposed to last 8 days and ended up lasting 6 weeks (not the judge's fault, by any means!) in which the owner of that ranch was the plaintiff against a local bank. At least I think it was the same ranch. I wondered what happened to the woman who was suing the bank (long, complicated story) and I Googled her name. Seems she had moved to St. Louis sometime after that trial and was murdered in 1999! Was a "Jane Doe" for about six years before she was finally identified (she had been shot and weighed down and thrown in the Mississippi, where she was discovered). Oh, my, yes, if that was the ranch as I remember, run, Maria, run!

I hope the checkpoint is in front of my house again... great entertainment. Ever watch a street DUI test up close and personal, from the comfort of your own home? Ever have people park in your driveway and leave their vehicle to try and evade arrest? We've had cars towed from our driveway at least 3 times. I've seen drivers and passengers change places right in front of the police, thinking they wouldn't be seen. It's amazing what people will do when they are drunk. Let's get them off the streets!

Stay away from the Mercado. The food, for the most part, is horrible and way over-priced. If you want the best available food during Fiesta then go to Our Lady of Guadalupe church on Nopal. But get there VERY early (11am) or else you will stand in line for an hour for tamales and when you get to the front of the line they will tell you they are sold out. The posole there is wonderful and you get a huge steaming bowl for a decent price.

funny, I sent the Amber Alert to Edhat about 4:45 Sunday A.M. after seeing it on a ribbon alert on the tv screen. Guess Ed only takes crime news from you, Roger. :-) I'm sure they were through our county well before it was publicized. I posted this at 6:30 a.m.: "there's a Ventura Cnty Amber Alert, but I already sent it to Edhat officially, so I won't waste EdHat's editors' work. It's on the CHP Incident Site."

I don't see anything about the drunk part of the "good ol days" that is good. Nor do I see anything about living on the streets, with or without being "drunk, that is good. It's a hard and nasty life.. It's hard on every one of us, including our police officers...being "drunk" that is.and that includes people who are not homeless or mentally ill, who drive or otherwise present themselves in our common public space. significantly impaired by a legal (and flammable) drug, whilst the Feds close down pot dispensaries to the cheers of the ideologues.

High road. Ahh.. Such a novel idea. Brilliant too! However, if you've not been paying attention, then you've missed all the "high road" situations where, in game theory, users of the High Road take advantage of the prisioners. The game is played simply by breaking the rules and EXPECTING that the delimma will force society to take the high road and forgive you. They will. You do. And then you continue breaking rules. It's everywhere and so easy to manipulate. Until it is not. And society busts and chaos reigns. Sometimes? It's just better to cover a house with stickers.

Fiesta Improvements needed. Close State Street to Cars from 6pm to 2am. This will remove cruising and gang related sign tossing. It also opens streets for more space, more retail, more restaurant seating. Police will have more control. Each entrance could be monitored and enforced with video cameras. It's such an easy fix. Why this town rather cram everyone into De La Guerra Plaza is beyond insane.

Downtown workers are government employee brown baggers. The Art Museum mainly kids on school bus excursions. The Library is a homeless bathroom, free internet pit stop The Arlington is mainly dark these days. Ages before the Vic opens with no more RDA funds doled out by city council cronies. Parking access to Granada too far away for street traffic and who are ready to go to sleep anyway after concerts are over. The dinner theater crowd comes only occasionally and not to shop for organic lettuce. Foreign language school students have prior room and board arrangements before they can come. Did you ever put boots on the ground before you started your business model? You have very bizarre expectations about life on the streets in SB. I think you got it mixed up with some major urban metropolitan city. Sorry.

GRRRRR. I'm angry! What an expletive deleted he is. Thief. And gives all gov't. employees more of a stain. 95K?!! As if how much he took matters. Good point about Vector control being under the Public Health dept. As if they need more on their plate though. And there is a special district tax to support vector control. And what the heck is up with the PD bookkeeper who embezzled parking funds?!!

Bail is set per a bail schedule depending on the crime, which, I believe, is statewide. Unless they have some reason to increase it (which his, no doubt, public defender would fight),he's entitled to that bail amount. Of course, at arraignment they'll probably release him on his own recognizance...

Hmmm...wondering if Jerry was one of the thugs who pulled up to the AM/PM mini-mart at State and Ontare Sunday afternoon, jumped out of a black, tinted window Suburban of eight others just like him, went into the market and bought 5 cases of 36-pack beers while bragging about how wasted they were all going to get, and then decided to take the "high road" and steal a kids skateboard right from under his nose. What "Jerry" and his buddies don't realize is that a witness got the license plate, called the police, and they WILL track them down; that is, if they're not already all in jail.

OP here. I should also add, we are now realizing that another disturbing factor (other than multiple people showing up at our doorstep and that they could have been swindled) is that the person impersonating us got our name connected to our address somehow and we don't know how! Only our agent's name is connected with the listing, but the fraudster created an email address using my first and last name! (P.S. We did put a note outside our door that the rental ad is a scam).

303145P - There is alcohol and substance abuse in a great many places all over the world. It is a personal decision - and policing a personal decision is not going to happen anywhere. Despite enormous social pressure and advertising of the dangers, there are still people who smoke. There are still people who skydive; jump off dangerous rocks. Unfortunately, it is part of a free society. Institutions that help with substance abuse are probably going to be government institutions especially for those who cannot afford treatment otherwise, because Pharma takes such big profits. I guess you have heard about Big Bad Government, and how it is sucking up our tax dollars (despite being the lowest in 60 years). Nope, nothing substantive is going to be done.

When you see the scam rentals they are always below market value so they get a lot of responses. It also works both ways. Often when you list a rental you get responses from someone abroad who can't call, coming to work on their advanced degree, work for a international charitable organization, their " mum and dad" ( no matter what county they claim to be from, it's always the mum thing)' will send the funds as they "need to secure a flat flat prior to their arrival" and will wire directly into your bank account. They generally come with a automated caution warning from Craigslist. Similar thing when listing vehicles. International scams and I don't think much can be done except buyer/ seller beware. Just because it is on the Internet doesn't mean it is true. Be cautious of everything, heck even this post.

There is a desperate need for blood... |
2012-07-30 11:11 PM |
|
Younger generations of donors need to be stepping up to the plate! So many now-seniors got into the habit because of serving in the armed forces during WWII and the Korean War. "Roll up your sleeve soldier!!" They knew that the life their blood might save could be that of their buddy. Now these service members are starting to time out, and we baby boomers and gen-Xers must step up and become regular donors. It is easy and almost pain free (if you can count a prick as being "pain"--most of us deal with joint and muscle pain already on a daily basis--this ain't nuthin!) You are given snacks and plenty of fluids while at the donor site, and can bank "points' toward rewards like movie passes, restaurant credits, music, clothing etc. Get into the regualr donation habit and give blood at least three times a year. Your community counts on it! ( I have about 20 units donated since the late 80's)

Re 155p. Interesting thanks for the link. Government creating government. It's too bad because vector control provides a great service to anyone with a rodent, vermin or bug infestation issue. I have used them on a number of problems over the years and have received great support, advice and saved who knows how much compared with using a private service. The field staff are great biologists (Vesnia is my favorit) and don't have a incentive to upsell on service that is not needed. That is the one department I don't mind supporting through my property tax dollars. For public problems I would rather have them deal with it rather then private contractors. Like Halliburton in Iraq, but I agree, throw the book at that guy.
