To make it even easier for you, because I'm a bee supporter: "If you would like to have an SBBA beekeeper relocate the swarm, please call our Bee Rescue Hotline @ 805.699.6229" Is it under "bee" or "honey" in the referral section? "Food" or "pets"? I'm looking right now. I have always had trouble with Edhat's search function. Is there a search button specific to "Referrals"? I'm not being snarky. Ah. I read down the individual columns under "B" listed in "Referrals" instead of across. D'OH! Here's the link: http://www.edhat.com/site/tidbit.cfm?nid=57292 Thanks 160. You've obviously used this site a lot more than I have!

Been having the same intermittent problems out here in the goodland. What gets me is the amount of marketing material crap from cox we have to put up with everyday stuffed into the mailbox and through email. Maybe if they took a portion of their bloated marketing budget and applied it to their infrastructure and pricing, we wouldn't have to endure their rapidly ascending fees and shoddy service.

It, the gate, is probably a recognized and appraised valuable work of art, despite the opinions of those for and against. That does not mean that the city has any $$ to restore it. In fact, the city /county of SB is deep in debt, and unless willing to sell holdings or clawback pension $$ from former public servants, this is a non-starter issue, much like the now infamous "blue line" art project a few years back. I say, as long as the school system here is hurting for money, there can be no funds spent on frivolity like this gate. Voters should think about things like this every time they prove of some new spending project or art install.

Although the money will be going to repainting, repairing rust, and rust-proofing the rainbow, it also will be used to set up a fund for future repair work. From what I have seen, over $20,000 has already been donated.

Table Refinishing |

9949.... the hard part about refinishing your own furniture is not so much the sanding but the gooey mess disposal. Clothes get ruined, driveways and garage floors are stained and it's just dirty smelly work. It is also very tedious work so corners are cut when it's not progressing fast enough (it can take more than a couple of weekends) and these "mistakes" show clearly when the new finish is applied. If you can afford it hire a professional.

most locals don't appreciate the gate because we were here when it went up and everyone thought it sucked from day one. In the medium of visual art, if you think it's ugly and out of place then that is how it affects you and that is as valid a critique as anything. Me, I'm a trained professional artist, and I think this thing is lame. Go ahead and hate it, you don't have to kneel down before Art. Some of it is actually quite bad, perhaps it's useful to have such a clear example of that right here.

I'm going back to the money. $80,000! Someone slipped a digit. $8,000 should more than cover it. I'd find 'environmentally responsible paint' and do it myself for that much. If someone doubled the money to $16,000, we could do it again in 8-10 years, when it's needed again. $80,000 should pay for 'maintenance' (repainting) for the next 100 years if it's put in trust. On most public projects, there's no one watching the piggy bank, or negotiating for a reasonable price. $80,000? $80,000!!!

Shaggy pointed out that it isn't bouganvilla covered. Actually that might be a good idea. It would cost a lot less than $80,000 to plant a few bouganvilla plants and, after a few years, the "gate" will be completely covered. So - ugly "gate" no longer visible, no need to worry again about paint and fixing the rust and it now looks appropriate for Santa Barbara. Problem solved

Could Mesa Jim provide the source of his $80,000 figure ? As I understand the fund raising project. it is under the umbrella of the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission which is collecting private funds for both the restoration. of the arch and its maintanace.. No county or city funds are to be used. The Commission,s goal, I thought, was $30,000 for restoration with an additional $20,000 set aside for maintaince. The gate needs to be washed and waxed.

The discussion and disagreement in this thread prove the Chromatic Gate is doing exactly what art should do - be provocative, emotive and inspire discussion regardless of whether or not you love or hate it. I personally don't like it from a "pleasing aesthetic" perspective, but completely love that it's something that's not Spanish themed with a red-tiled roof. To me, it represents at least the possibility this community will allow some deviation to that formula in the future. And since it's being funded with private money, it's all good!

Some pretty narrow minds here, but diversity is one or social aspirations, right? The maligned sculpture certainly has a stunning perceived effect on people's quality of life. How do you let yourselves get so bent out of shape over an essentially meaningless piece of steel? The costs may seem excessive, but remember the city has to pay prevailing wage, high end custom formulated paint is required, there is a significant amount of rust removal and steel repair. Lack of an endowment is what got us here in the first place so cough up five bucks and stop complaining. The solution is restoration, removal is not an option. S'Auntie Barbara

I was against the stupid arch from its initial concept and was appalled when the ugly, gaudy, out-of-proportional monstrosity was built. But over the years as the vivid colors faded and the monstr...excuse me, "artwork," got a weathered look, it actually looked far better than it did when it was new. It no longer looks like a giganticized version of some schlocky trinket bought in Tijuana. I say leave it alone and don't do anything with it. Why call attention to it? It's far less offensive now.

@233 has exactly the right idea--put it at the Airport. That would be a MUCH better venue for it. That way we wouldn't have to look at it all the time. Maybe while they're at it, they could also take the mural walls from the old Vons to the Airport?

I've always thought the mural was ugly, but have a great appreciation for it and am very glad it was preserved. I do NOT understand though, WHAT they were thinking when they moved it so close to Chapala Street...it essentially creates a barricade, reminiscent of a freeway noise reduction wall. NOW I hate the thing.

300223 - about the community "allowing" it. I wish this had been put to a vote before installation - otherwise it is just one group of people's decision to inflict something on others who do not like it. It is NOT about community. It would be nice if real community opinion would be taken into account before "renovation".

Let's try to be positive about a new store that just opened in town. First of all the 99 Cents Only Store offers great brand name products such as Dole, Kraft, Kellogs, General Mills and more........and guess what? Does anyone know that they also have a , "Welcome to Club 99 where membership is FREE! Club 99 is 99¢ Only Stores’ Bulk Sales Program which provides you with the opportunity to purchase items by the case and in large quantities. Your order is shipped for FREE to the store of your choice." You can buy online or order at the store and this can help out small businesses or I should say our local businesses. There are NO SHIPPING OR HANDLING FEES, YEAH ONLINE SHOPPERS....... But regardless of these positives there are other great things about discount stores!!!

According to yesterday's article in the News Press $48,000 has already been donated and the are looking for $15,000 more for maintainence. I am not sure where the 80K figure or that the city is footing the bill is coming from. Pubic art is always going to be controversial (except maybe Bud Bottoms dolfins because everyone loves sea mammals) and it is a piece from a important artist of the Bauhas School and worth restoring. If people never saw the piece in the original colors it may be difficult to visualize the full impact. It is possible that after the restoration some people may hate it less.

Geese are one bird species that mate for life. This goose most certainly is lonely. Geese make great guardians of your yard, but you're right about them being a prey species. I love chickens, ducks and geese, but have had a few horrific experiences with such pets being eaten/carried off. Best to leave this one at the Lake. Let's hope the human predators leave it be.

Watch out for the P.O. |

@261 Good tip for everyone. That was my first case of P.O., when a friend collected twigs, off road, enroute to Jalama Beach, to start a camp fire. Happily, I only brushed against the P.O. twig. School nurse at SBCC didn't know what I had that was making my arm crazy itchy and swollen and red, but I figured it out soon enough. Eventually, I resorted to scrubbing my arm in a hot shower, using a loofa. Really helped. One of the best laughs I ever got was when Parks Dept wanted to put signs ("Watch Out for Poison Oak") along trail leading up from Cliff Drive onto Wilcox property. One lady stood up at the meeting and said, "Just let them find out what it is the way the rest of us did. Then they sure as heck will know to steer clear!"

Frankly, I am dismayed at our 'community'. I went to the new store yesterday, as a person who lives downtown, and I liked what I saw. Tourists need sunscreen, swim noodles, and other beach trinkets, and the $.99 store had them! I like only having to walk 2 blocks to get coffee creamer, milk or butter, and not pay 'convenience store' prices from the local liquor vendors (the only other choice). Rodger's right - there's an adult store across the street, and the old empty Esau's. Blight. We get something the area can use, and you guys poo poo it because it's not Hermes or Dior. Please recognize others live here that might shop at discount stores, and it's ok.

The original posting, and 90% of the comments, are in error as is usually the case in these forums. The Chromatic Gate - a design of Bauhaus artist/sculptor/photographer Herbert Bayer, who spent his last years in Santa Barbara - is being repaired with private funds donated to the Restore Our Rainbow Committee. Permanent rust-proofing is not possible; but the next-best "rust-proof" paint costs $500/gallon. This does not come out of your pocket unless you contribute. I am not particularly a sculpture fan, and in various cities I"ve seen public sculpture that doesn't especiallly appeal to me. But I would as soon submit selections of public art to a popular vote as I would submit the selection of the Nobel Prize to a popular vote.

Paul Cronshaw is the greatest guy. We had a "structural" hive in walls of our 100-year-old redwood house. We didn't even consider killing the bees, or ripping apart the wall. Took some doing to find Paul. When we used list the County Agricultural Dept gave us, all we got (from 8 bee guys) was talk of pesticides (preferred method!) and/or how we needed to pull apart our walls. $$$. Paul came w/ "Debbie," his protege. Two nicer people don't exist on the planet. Took a bit, but, meanwhile, we enjoyed our house smelling like honey. Paul & Debbie got bees relocated, none of us got stung. Now, we wait for the ants to eat the honey, and the wax moths to come and eat the wax. Easy-peasy. A neighbor had swarms in her mansion; I called Paul on her behalf. She chose to use pesticides, but I kind of expected that of someone who sprays for ants, has no clue about the harm she is doing to herself and her environment. SAVE THE BEES!

With all due respect to Herbert Bayer (the artist) and his legacy, the "Chromatic Gate," has never fit in with its surroundings. The geometry, composition and coloration of the piece is at odds with the locale. At best, it seems a misbegotten concept that went too far. Expend funds only for removal, and do not seek to replace it with another politically-charged eyesore. Isn't there enough beauty and spectacle to be found in the backdrops of the Santa Ynez Mountains, the Pacific Ocean and the Channel Islands?

Even Mrs. Bayer thought it was an odd selection from his works and questioned the site. (Paul Mills led the project.) It should go somewhere where it fits in and will be loved. The Pueblo Viejo now (since the late eighties) has an ordinance re procedures for placing public art in that part of town. Marge Dunlap's "It's Raining" fountain at Las Aves by the bird refuge was the first to go through that procedure.

Boy, living 6 months of the year away and having to leave your cats behind is not an enviable position to be in. By leaving them behind with open access for any Tom, Dick or Harry to waltz in and challenge the territorial rights has got to be hard on your girls. It's asking them to go feral 6 months of the year and fend for themselves. Mostly cats can do that but forcing them back and forth is cruel. It was very kind of you to adopt them but it's kinda selfish to abandon them half the year. Tough position to be in all around.

As for all those saying that mom is rude ... what's your point? The OP didn't ask if their mom is rude, and pointing it out provides no help.

What beautiful animals. I would be worried sick if I had to leave them to the mercies of the world for six months each year. I may sound unsympathetic but I do believe if one cannot be consistantly and personally responsible for one's beloved pets it would be kinder to the animals not to have them in the first place. One cannot assume or rely on strangers to give children or pets the same love and attention as their own parents or owners.

I find this thread very interesting as it sounds like the OP wants to pick and choose who merits public attention and who doesn't. If it was a house burning s/he would, surely, not object to the local fire dept deploying to fight the blaze. Or if the boat's owner, rather than their anchor slipping, had been in the middle of an massive pile up on the fwy would surely merit the public assistance everyone affected would receive. Yet, in this situation their loss is grounds for disdain and judgement. That seems odd to me. Are we so polarized with such a strict caste system that only some folks deserve public assistance while others don't? "Oh sorry, you were in an accident last year, no jaws of life for you!" "You let your house burn down 3 years ago, we're not sending police to respond to your call about an intruder." "You got a DUI last year and now you want us to believe your call about a rape?" Tell me we're not heading in that direction.

Fool's Harbor is called that for a reason. Tough place to anchor, many anchors don't hold well on that bottom, many boaters don't really know how to set an anchor, and it is unprotected. There is a difference between "accidents" and readily avoidable problems. So yes, there may be unusual circumstances, but if someone drives a car knowing the brakes don't work, and crashes, I don't call that an accident, and I don't want my tax dollars funding this kind of stupidity.

Herbert Bayer was an esteemed artist and though for years I found the arch seemingly out of place, I now like it for its unexpectedness. The arch makes one think about it, for better or worse. Nothing is as simple as it seems; there are probably important components that make this repainting costly - insurance, special paints, expertise to make certain that the painting isn't just slapped on. Thanks to donors for refinishing this work. For certain there are other worse architectural uglies that have been permitted.

I knew I would read some criticism of ex-pats leaving their pets for half a year. But it is true that many ex-pats do have animals and somehow make arrangements for their cats left behind for a period. At least the cats have a homing place to feel their own. This is not an arrangement that would work with dogs, unless on a farm or large area, certainly not an apartment. As cats are independent and smart, they will accept this type of life, until something better comes their way. They are very smart animals.

Actually, that's one of the worst things you can do to "cure" poison oak or ivy. Rubbing vigorously will only spread the oils and cause your aching skin to react further. That's some of the worst advice of all time. The best thing you can do is loosely cover the area to isolate the oils (they stay on your skin and ooze out which can cause cross-contamination to other parts of the body that didn't originally touch the plant or oils.) Icing the area is good too, and so is taking anti-inflammatory meds. But scrubbing til the sore skin pops? Ummm, no. Skin infections will happen and this is just awful advice.

Using the helicopter for dehydrated hikers is overkill and not a safe use of a helicopter. I have EMS and triage experience and know of what I speak. The use of the helicopter evacuations for the close-in back country cases lately are ridiculous. I'm waiting for our first helicopter accident / crash /fatality to bring some sense and oversight to THIS community. That's what it will take to get some level heads looking at this over-use of helicopter transport to Cottage for any little complaint.

The person who told me about it described it as a "white light" experience/sensation. And I mean HOT. Are you people serious with your comments that people who can't afford to live here should move?? Good luck finding someone to serve your coffee, clean your office building, or work at your favorite non-profit agency. Your solution is to have thousands and thousands of people commute over 45 minutes? Rather than fix the problem locally so that more people can live here comfortably? Horrible, horrible idea. I have 2 master's degrees and don't make enough to support myself and my child in Santa Barbara on my own. I work in the mental health field - obviously essential to the community. So based on your logic I should have to live in Lompoc??

@154 None of us are going to make it out of this world alive. Use common sense, be nice, and take advantage of every day that life has to offer. Now, how that sail boat bumped into the pier is beyond me. All the people on it I would say were in their 20's (I was there) but did not see anyone except the lifeguard driving his pickup on the beach like it was the end of the world in distress. I'm glad that no kids were run over, a couple of close calls though.

350 I think based on the minimal info we have regarding the injuries it's difficult to know. They have to make that decision based on what they see when they get there. From our point of view not knowing all the details it may seem like overkill, but when you actually know the extent of injuries it may be necessary.

Build an outside cat enclosure that encompasses the cat door. There is no solution to others using a cat door other than fencing it in or locking it closed. Well, the collar /door system, as 286 suggested. But you need someone to monitor that once you start it, for the safety of the cats. And it has to be a breakaway collar. You may have wild animals using the cat door too. Beautiful cats; good luck!

365 - I don't suppose alcohol might have been involved? There might be an alternative to shutting it down altogether. 350 - I wonder what Cottage charges for each helicopter landing? Saving lives is one thing and hefty claims to the insurance companies is another. I hope the kid from Paso Robles last week pulled through. The odd thing is that I don't recall reading in the past few years about all the people in the tri-counties who did not make it because they could not get to the hospital fast enough. Having worked in the health care industry, what hides behind the mission of 'saving lives' is all about money.

Other than the fact that it is beached, I didn't see any facts about the circumstances of the boat washing up or what will be done about it. So stop speculating. It's ugly in light of the subject. Sailboats were in our earliest dreams, but not everyone who had that dream can afford the outrageously costly Santa Barbara slip. Whatever the scenario is with the boat, my sympathies to the owner for the possible loss of their boat. If anyone knows them, and they need labor help with removal, have them post on here, I'd help if I can.

365....If first responders shouldn't be allowed to save people from their own stupidity, they would have nothing to do. 350....Really, you have EMS experience? Then you would know that dehydration can be a serious medical emergency and can lead to death. It's so easy from edhat to complain this, but when you are the one in the predicament, or it is your family member, you might think different. You have to imagine yourself up **it creek, lost, injured, upside down in your car, stung by a bee and having allergic reaction, what would you want? A curtailed response by EMS because you are a "burden" on the tax payer? Only in the USA would we complain about our EMS system doing too much. Go to a third world country, they have low/no taxes, and no 911. To the world of edhatters.....you must accept our EMS/Rescue services for what they are, not perfect, but always working hard to serve the community.

Just because you know something doesn't mean you're qualified to judge every situation without the facts. That's a dangerous and irresponsible attitude. Were you aware the dehydrated hiker was 78 years old? He was airlifted to safety and his younger, stronger companion (also showing signs of dehydration) was rescued by ground. I am grateful we have a pretty damned good system available if I ever need them. It's not perfect but what is?

I hope this little girl is found right away. How terrifying for all involved! @380: You'd be surprised how quickly this could happen. It does not necessarily mean that the parent(s) were not watching either. Please reserve judgement until we hear all the details. Update as you can, Roger! Thanks.

thanks 279, I heard that story from a frequent LLC walker and assumed it was the same goose. 363, I have no idea if it was dumped there, born there or wandered in on its own. Pretty much all the ducks and geese there get fed by humans and thus become somewhat tame. It didn't seem to be in distress so I think calling for a rescue is unnecessary at this time. 273, I looked up goose totem. cool :-)

The NP said today that it was a 78 year old man who was severely dehydrated hiking with a friend who was also slightly dehydrated. I'd say this was a good use of the helicopter!

350 sounds like the same ex-"triage experienced" person who jumped to absurd conclusions with the girl with the compound fracture earlier in the month. It sounds like no judgment skills resulted from the experience, and we can be grateful this person is no longer in the system. And, as with every fire/police/public servant story, we can expect the tea baggers to whine about taxes like they're shouldering the burden alone.

Since they were dehydrated and not injured why not simply drop water containers to them?

Grover was dearly loved by the neighborhood children, Jacques dispised. Grover was also loved by the Miramar owners, the Gawzners. Mark Bennett made the movie, premier at Westmont during a downpour rain storm. Mark grew up across the freeway from the Miramar in a beautiful adobe home his parents built; they made every brick (each weighed 45 lbs) and put an adobe wall around the property (took them 17 years). Mom still lives there. It's 11pm Sunday, hope the UHs get a chance to read this.
