SB's New Airport |
2012-07-12 12:24 AM |
|
I am mixed as a frequent traveller with 50 some trips last year out of SBA, about the same amount this year probably it is a nicer terminal without a doubt. The part I am mixed is when I think of the 54 million dollar pricetag. It seems the items people like bathrooms, a food option beyond TSA, more seating, and the need for enhanced TSA area could have been accomplished for 10-14 million dollars using the old terminal footprint. They seem to have just gone overboard and didn't think it through. The terminal isn't free the costs will be passed on to traveller's and the airlines. The same airlines that are slashing routes and abandoning smaller markets, we lost Delta, AA has left other airports in California and may do more, Frontier seems to teeter every year as to whether they go under. If one of them goes the cost rises for the traveller and remaining airlines who if the cost effectiveness is effective leave or cut back. The industry is rethinking their commuter models and those changes may affect us why the airport chose to spend that much without looking at the industry seems reckless, but yeah its a nice terminal.

I walk through there with my teens every weekend and the guys have always been fine! Jovanni is especially adorable with his Italian accent. If you don't want to talk to them and smile politely while saying no they should back off. I think your story of being followed for 3 stores is probably an exaggeration...but if it isn't then you should complain to the mall manager for sure.

"smart" meters & electrosmog...dead bees come with widespread "smart" meter installs, along with all the "unrelated" structure fires. It's worth a google, but scroll down - the first listed sites and their "science" are paid for by the utility companies - with our money - the abundance of actual data can be found lower down.

It has absolutely nothing to do with "raping the environment." They are hired protestors paid low wages with no benefits by the union. They are ordered not to speak to anyone that asks them what the are protesting for, they can only give you a flier pointing you to a website. They negatively effect nearby business as well as their message is so unclear. It's just another example of how pathetic modern day unions have become.

She is an exceptionally talented chef, mom and philanthropist who made a poor decision that many decent people make from time to time. Chances are everyone on this thread has done it at least once. And we've all done stupid things. That's called being human. We can all be glad that no one got hurt just like when an accident between sober people causes no injuries. Give Cat a break. She's paying a bigger price for this due to her celebrity than any of the rest of would. It's now time to snark on someone else, gang.

They recently found two things that are contributing to hive collapse due to the low levels of a pesticide that was thought to be non-toxic to bees. The pesticide causes the bees to be forgetful about how to get back to the hive and this can be deadly for them. It also makes them more susceptible to the effects of the mites that they have. My co-worker has some hives and is very knowledgeable; he says that now he has to include some africanized bee dna in his queens so they are strong enough to get rid of the mites and take care of the hive. He also sprinkles powdered sugar on them at regular intervals because in cleaning off the sugar they also get rid of the mites. Some beekeeper in SLO gives classes at Cal Poly that are very popular. This all comes from articles in the LA Times.

I guess you think blowing .19 and .20 and being over twice the legal limit is not so bad because we have all done it. As 583P said, the protesters are minimum-wagers paid by a union that is whining because the general contractor rebuilding Goleta Valley Hospital didn't hire subcontractors who employ union workers. The union is making a ridiculous attempt to 'shame' hospital board members -- who had nothing to do with hiring subcontractors. The 'protesters' mostly have no idea what they are 'protesting' (and many don't speak much English). They have been posted outside the businesses and even homes of the board members. Most people who see the signs agree that this union tactic is beyond silly, it's stupid, and just makes the union look like a bunch of whiners -- which they are. (BDC = Bermant Development Corp ?)

That said, I think the tough love approach is best with anyone who would drive down the pass in that condition....they treated her differently than us, and I don't think it was the right thing to do in this case. She made a really stupid, selfish decision to get behind the wheel and put others at risk, she needed the tough love method to send home the message. I hope she is true to her word and never does it again, but when you're constantly shielded and pampered, you may not get the true sense of your own stupidity. For her families sake, and for the rest of the driving public, I hope she learns something.

If the workers holding the signs don't say anything how is it folks know that they are paid minimum wage and are without benefits? I worked for a company that was protested by them and got to see them outside my office window; they have little umbrellas built into their pvc sign holder that looks pretty inefficient but is pretty cute. Anyhow, I don't see that they are much of a deterrent to the business being protested.

It is creating backlash against all unions. Voters will remember these thugs at election time when you see candidates carrying large numbers of union member endorsements. Everyone they are naming in these banners are civic leaders in this town. Who gain more and more sympathy every day these goons remain blocking our sidewalks and streets. Be sure to give extra support to any business or persons targeted by these paid shill union rabble-rousers.

OP here, thanks for the insight...and just an FYI- we did say no, and the guy did grab my daughters hand..even though we were not making eye contact and moving away from him. Our behavior was correct, the vendor is the one with a behavior problem...Honestly if I was anywhere else, and someone did that, I would call 911 because it was intrusive...I would be curious if the same happens to men? Men are also capable of purchasing these products..are men getting followed and grabbed? Or just teen girls? I will contact mall management...great idea!

Not all of the vendors are alike; the man that has been there with the cell phone covers for years never bothers anyone but this guy was just rude and followed me and it was very uncomfortable. Now that this has come up on Edhat I will make sure to call the mall management and hope others that have had this happen will as well!

296645 - well then, everyone should turn off their cell phones for good - since there are far, far more of them than Smart Meters, and are far stronger. "1. If there is something going on, the big culprit will have to be the cell phone, since the radiation exposure there is so much higher than all the other sources. Compared to cell phones, the smart meter isn’t a “log” on the fire, it’s more like a broom straw. So we should keep looking at the cell phone research, but in 20+ years, not much to be worried about has emerged." http://open4energy.com/forum/home/sma/smart_meters_el ectromagnetic_health_risk So a smart meter is a "broom straw" in comparison to a cell phone. Next time an article is written about smart meters and their scary effects, think cell phones instead. I doubt very much that people will give up their cell phones.

To say that everyone would be earning minimum wages without unions is an interesting idea. Think it through though - people will continue to be paid based on their ability to negotiate a salary and the competition for their desired job. The employers will pay as much as they need or can afford to, based on the availability of needed skills and the number/quality of the applicants. There may have been a time when unions were a good thing for workers. But with the government now regulating what employers can or can't do, the unions in many cases are only a good thing for the union bosses.

Observations from the last 30 years - unions have decreased, middle class wages have flat-lined and the wages of the rich have increased astronomically. The demise of unions will mean that the US will sink into third world status with respect to the middle class. That is because corporations seek maximum profit with minimum wages. Why do you think so many jobs were shipped overseas to low-wage, inhumane labor factories. So that wealthy corporate raiders could have multiple luxury homes, some with car lifts - all on the backs of raided pensions for which the taxpayer had to foot the bill.

From what I've been looking at over the years the first culprit appears to be Neonicotinoid pesticides, then the ocean of microwave pollution (meters, phones et al). Besides earth's magnetic flux lines, bees navigate using the polarized light patterns of the sky. The sun light is more white and less yellow than it used to be. Coupled with the chemtrail particles there is a good possibility that polarizations of the sky sectors has/is changed(ing). Bees can see way into the ultra violet range of light too...ozone holes? Near Bishop Diego High School we find a couple dead & dying bees in the driveway every day. So sad to see these little hardworking souls end up this way.

RESIDENT - please explain why corporations today are sitting on the biggest amount of cash EVER, and yet people are underpaid or underemployed or unemployed. The ONLY factor driving job creation is the buying power of the middle class. With the bulk of the US revenue going to the top 5%, none has trickled down to the middle class. The tax cuts at the start of the 2001-2008 presidential term, were supposed to create jobs - but the lowest number of jobs were created in that 8 year stretch than in the last SEVENTY FIVE years. So when the statement is made to "give tax breaks to the job creators", that is a huge LIE, and born out by the facts. The job creators have been been hoarding their increased revenue while the rest of the country struggles daily. And the unions have been made the scapegoat, which is also patently false.

"Get specific." OK. Ex. 1. I worked for a big business for years. I knew more than many others in my job classification, worked harder, was responsible for more, accomplished more with less help, and was paid the same or less than them because workers are paid by classification, rather than competence and ability. That's what's wrong with most unions. Mediocre work is paid the same as good work, so what's the incentive to work hard and get better? Ex. 2. A relative now works for this same big business. The union has refused to allow her to be reclassified because then she would no longer be a union member. She wants to be reclassified; her boss wants her reclassified; she works in a unique, very responsible job. She is stuck where she is because the union doesn't want her reclassified out of jobs they control. I'm not blanket anti-union. My aunt was part of the "stewardess" union years ago that fought against being fired when you got married, and all stewardesses required to be young, single, attractive women. When you do good like that, you get supported. When you pay crappy performance as well as superior performance, or hold someone back from advancement so as not to deplete your ranks, you've gone down the wrong path. Back to the original topic. Those "shame on" signs reinforce most anti-union biases, and make me patronize those being protested. The research has been done before on these paid, non-union, minimum wage workers, who are standing there. It's insulting to our intelligence and integrity.

I am VERY good at avoiding eye contact and sending the message to not bother me, and it doesn't work with them. And for the record I have lived in other countries and gone to other areas. The point is, this is not expected nor acceptable here. Just because something is a cultural norm somewhere else does not mean it should be tolerated here. It's a cultural norm in some countries to aggressively sexually harrass women in public - should we allow someone to do it here just because they are foreign? When in Rome...

These signs are such an EYESORE and I think responsible for Cafe Shell going out of business since they were always posted in front and blocking the street view from customers. They are huge and serve no purpose other than creating ill-will towards unions and a blight to the downtown. Would the City Council FINALLY do something about these signs, even if it means passing a new law about the size of protest signs allowed. These are easily over 8' long. Just because of my frustration with this union, I would go out of my way not to hire a union worker next time I need a carpenter.

They were wrongfully protesting Docs- who was merely going to occupy a new space in Santa Maria mall that wasn't refurbished by union workers;they should've been in front of the mall owners place- not the future tenant! Finally citizens of AG had enough and assembled a cash mob and showdown with the union to get them to pack it up. The city of AG even tried to mediate. Eventually union left.

On top of mites, viruses and many other threats, a parasitic fly has recently been identified that has made the switch from bumble bees to honey bees, turning them into so-called "zombie bees". This tiny fly parasite has been positively identified from SB. Google "zombie bee" Scientific American Blog and PLoS One are good articles. To see if this is a cause of your dead bees, scrape one or more bees into a jar, seal and observe for a week or two. The fly larva crawls out of the dead bee's head after eating it from the inside out and forms a pupa.

Google the following: "Shame On" Protesters It's all over the US, not just here. These guys are a plague. I don't blame the actual protesters too much (it is rather tough to get a job right now), but I agree with 692: I'd go out of my way to hire non-union people because of this. Also, to the people wanking about "How do YOU know?" - this topic has been brought up again & again, and numerous links have been posted regarding the protesters and "Shame On" campaign, as well as some people posting what people have been told when they spoke to the protesters. The commenters here are not just making stuff up, this has been going on for yours and years, and there is LOTS of info out there regarding the whole situation.

Non-ionizing, high-frequency, pulsed radiation excites biologic tissue. This will heat the tissue (or any [conductive] substance containing water...think of the microwave oven). The rapid pulsing has a mechanical shock effect on the tissue...like a matrix of miniature jack hammers working on components of living cells (nucleus, mitochondria, DNA, etc.). Interactions of the ubiquitous microwave radiations also produce interference/standing waves. This is all cumulative. Every "straw" in the fire counts...getting harder and harder to avoid this stuff.

Agree with 674, that electricity is probably of much lower concern than toxins. However, it is the type of previous disregard for exploration of all possibilites before coming to a sound theory that gives rise to widespread misinformation. We forget that collectively, animals aside from humans have much different and simpler/more sophisticated means to go about living.

Okay. Here is the skinny. I have had bees for 10 years. Bees 101-50,000 to 75,000 is normal hive size. Don't mess with them, they won't mess with you. Africanized bees have a 'bitchy' queen, replace her with a calm American queen, problem gone, they calm down. Dying en mass? Pesticides. Weakens immune system. It's collective. Growers in the area use toxic chemicals. Bees mirror what happens in people, but it takes longer with us. Dehydration. They need water flow or fountains to thrive.
Have a swarm, get a beeman to set you up with a bee box I GET 60 POUNDS OF HONEY EVER YEAR! :~)) and they thrive! xo - tink

Almost every type of insecticide is toxic to bees to some degree. This year the oak moth cycle wasn't stopped by a mid-winter cold snap, so the oak moth caterpillars continue to munch and people continue to spray their city oaks, particularly older oaks that stress when they lose lots of leaves to oak moth. All those tree sprays are more or less toxic to bees and the spray residual drifts through the area. Perhaps you are in an neighborhood where people like less pock-marked gardens and trees, and spray more. Also I have been told that there is county spraying for mosquitoes as a precaution to keep down West Nile virus. Those sprays aren't good for bees either. Don't know if this rumor is true.

Now just another echoing cookie cutter airport inside, with towers and tiles and windows whose shapes and styles are all jumbled up architecturally. I miss the eclectic little newspaper/sundries store. And then there's that gloomy mural when you go up the escalator in a huge echoing building. Even the horse is frowning! I noticed that when the luggage was being unloaded from the cart to the passenger pick-up area, the handler now had to twist and fling each bag, because the new door does not raise high enough for him to insert his upper body slightly and place the bags. I asked him and he said it was an ergonomic problem the designers should have caught, and that yes, it hurts his back.

Next week we fly to visit family at the beach in Southern New Jersey. They have charged a fee to get on the beach for over 35 years there. The cost is $5 per day, or $10 per week, or $25 per season. They hire high school / college kids to walk around the beach and check that you are wearing your tag. I don't have a problem with it as long as the fees truly go towards beach services. But the supes will never pull the trigger on this one because of the backlash they will get.

I'd rather see a residential City street parking permiting program. That would eliminate all the campers that ruin the city streets, and also gain money by selling residential permits to people who park on the street. Ticketing revenue would also then go up. Beach parking fees will happen soon, maybe not in the next year or so, but next 5 years without a doubt, you'll have to pay to park basically anywhere near the sand in SB county/ City. I wouldn't be surprised if popular trails like Tunnel/Inspiration also get meters, or something similar. PAY UP! How else can we pay for all of our City/County employees, and their union fueled perks.

Stop being so passive, which is perceived by the aggressive in the sexual dance as acquiescence. Say "no" and mean it.... add a few expletives and threaten bodily harm, that's what your purse is for. The County has a budget of $4 million to pay for the salaries and expenses of the 3 shelters they have for homeless dogs in the County. They get the food for free, and pay about $200K/yr in medical expenses. The rest is for the salaries and benefits and pensions costs of the employees that average $90K/yr. And the people that work the hardest, the kennel attendants get paid the least, or are often hired as temporary employees that don't get any benefits at all! Does it sound like the County needs to start charging fees at the beach parks, or learn how to run the shelters more efficiently?

Yes, if they were going to do anything about trucks on the 154, they would have done it when that gravel truck killed that family in their house a while back. Hence, an accident all for trying to get to either the 101 or 246 six seconds faster & in front of the truck. Keep the damn big rigs on the 101 for gosh sakes!

Actually, with the exception of the 45 mph section at the entrance to Cachuma, the speed limit on the 154 is 55 miles per hour. Any other signs with speeds near curves are SUGGESTED and are warnings - they are yellow which sets them apart from the standard white ones. You will not be ticketed for traveling above the speed limit on the yellow signs unless you are creating a safety hazard. In traffic school, the instructor told the class that it is always safe to drive 10 miles faster than the yellow signs suggest - I wonder if he is still teaching those classes? LOL

@563 Definite +1 to the bike/pedestrian underpass/overpass idea. If there were a way to get from old-town (or over near the airport) to the Fairview/Calle Real area without using the existing overpass, I'd use it all the time. I use the Patterson bike-path underpass often enough, but it's a bit out of the way. Fairview is a massive mess. I grew up here and now own my own home here, and it just keeps getting worse over time. I wish that Goleta had never incorporated, but now that it has, it would make sense if the city of Goleta would spend it's time addressing the worst traffic problem the city has, which is definitely Fairview by a very large margin. Even if they can't address it for 10 more years, that's fine, but they can start planning now, and letting us know about the plans. Anything else seems a bit like rearranging deck chairs.

It hasn't been bad coming to Goleta before 7, but yesterday took an extra half hour on the bus at 5pm. It would be much better if people knew how to merge into one lane. Once it is one lane it moves pretty well, but some have to try to get a few spots ahead and will move over into the "faster" lane (the one that has to merge) and make it slower for everyone. Then people don't want to let them back in, so they keep creeping along trying to force things. I also wondered why they didn't do it when all of the paving was going on. Then again the fresh pavement is already getting badly torn up on Nojoqui grade, mostly in the slow lane that trucks use, but a bit in the others too. I bet in less than 2 years it'll need repaving again. Lastly, on the bus I can look out at the other drivers and was amazed at all of the people violating the hands-free cell phone law. I would say 80% of the drivers I saw in about a 15 minute stretch had phones in their hands while driving.

Fresh tortillas are always a great thing, but the rest of the stuff just isn't that flavorful. The owners are nice folks they have a great hype machine/tourist trap going so more power to them. 2012-07-12 12:37 PM |

I'm no supporter of truckers on 154 but I ride that route frequently and the majority of slowdowns are not caused by the big rigs but RVs, senior citizens, ranchers pulling horse trailers, vacationers with boat trailers and other zealous slow pokes. If the reason behind this frenzy is to get traffic moving faster on this state route you're all barking up the wrong tree. 6771P... other states have a "lane hog law" that states that if you have more than 5 vehicles backed up behind you you must pull over and let them pass. Alas there aren't enough pullouts on 154 to allow folks to pull over even if they cared to.

I don't know either Dr Ronzone or Mr Ezell but I do take exception to those who think that someone with ADD, anxiety and depression can not be a competent professional. I have worked as a professional engineer for over 30 years and have had nothing but good reviews and held positions of increasing responsibilities. I have depression and at times anxiety. However, I am able to manage them with professional help. In addition, I have held positions of leadership in several non-profits. I am intelligent and care deeply about people.

The only sign directing tourists to the Santa Barbara Mission is located at the State and East Los Olivos intersection. No wonder there are so many reports of problems on all East Los Olivos intesections. Additionally, East Los Olivos Street is the main route for all the Mission Canyon and APS Riviera traffic uses to get downtown or out of town. It should be a four-lane parkway with that level of traffic, instead of two-lane residential neighborhood road. Let's destroy one more part of the Mission-Upper East district like the conversion to one-way streets on Anacapa and Santa Barbara streets south of East Mission did a few decades ago - turned them all into speedways instead of quiet family neighborhood streets. Who plans these things anyway.

I thought we had a law about pulling over if there were more than 10 cars piling up behind you? I've never seen anyone actually do it but I will pull to the right to let someone by if they are tailgating me very closely and I'm already pushing the speed limit. What I never understand is why the people that are going really slowly in the one lane sections of 154 speed up to 70 mph in the passing section, then go back to 40 once the road goes back to one lane. Must be something about the competitive nature of people or something- that they hate being passed.

How about making 154 a complete FOUR lane highway and be done with it? I assume a 5 year project at a cost of 500 million dollars would cover it. I think it would be worth it considering we are just one earthquake or other natural disaster away from severing a major artery on either the 101 or 154. Or how about helicopters for everyone.

A reminder - the 154 is the route of choice used by most GPS and mapping services - many big rig drivers would prefer the 101 over the 154. It taxes your rig and wastes fuel. I've owned a trucking company for many years - we only have big trucks - I do not allow my drivers to use the 154 period - way less problems that way. There is no easy fix for this problem folks - share the road and be kind always.

Teachers union own the state legislature and pass volumes of teacher protection regulations have choked out schools to be ranked among the worst in the nation. Unions poison every industry they touch and drive it out of business. Now they are poisoning schools and cities - into bankruptcy. Your tax dollars are now going directly into public employee union bosses pockets and used to buy even more union-friendly legislators to choke more out of you until you stop sending these union goons to Sacramento. Every election you have choices but because the unions siphon so much money in mandatory dues, they have millions to mislead you every single election. You can starve unions at the ballot box with you votes. And you can learn to stop putting unions on the both sides of bargaining tables on city councils, boards of supervisors and education board of trustees.

After reading the report, it strikes me odd there is no traffic engineer involved. Are the concerns raised in the report supported by accident data or is this all anecdotal? The "report" is full of content and graphics pertaining to the history and cultural resources of the area but this all seems irrelevant and dilutes the points they're trying to make. I'll be curious to see if either the City or County responds at all to this.

Trucks on the 154 |

When I was driving 154 5-6 days a week, I would have loved a ban on large vehicles. But, even as a "kid", I knew it couldn't happen. It's a state highway and open to any vehicle allowed to travel on highways. FWIW, my dad used to be a trucker and drove up and down the coast for years. When we were in a car, he loved taking 154 because it's so scenic. But in a truck, you couldn't have paid him to drive over it because it's so taxing on the truck and annoying to the line of cars stuck behind it. "I don't want to be that jerk [bleep]ing off a bunch of people." I can guarantee you that 154 is the absolute last road that any trucker wants to take with a load if they've ever been on it. They might take it once, following their GPS (if they miss the signs advising against it) but they won't make that mistake twice without a darn good reason. They're no happier about being on that road than you are about being stuck behind them.

Love the innovation behind this product, supposing it tastes good, but the problem I see is that it would take up too much room in my freezer. Essentially I would have to buy these twice per week, cause there isn't enough room to store it. The CHP was enforcing this a couple of years ago; California vehicle code 21656: On a two-lane highway where passing is unsafe because of traffic in the opposite direction or other conditions, a slow-moving vehicle, including a passenger vehicle, behind which five or more vehicles are formed in line, shall turn off the roadway at the nearest place designated as a turnout by signs erected by the authority having jurisdiction over the highway, or wherever sufficient area for a safe turnout exists, in order to permit the vehicles following it to proceed. As used in this section a slow-moving vehicle is one which is proceeding at a rate of speed less than the normal flow of traffic at the particular time and place.

The design is simply awful, and those who approved it really let us down. You can read their names on the tiles they had placed on the wall as a woeful tribute to themselves. The peaked-arch feature is all wrong and when combined with a barracks-like blockhouse and that stubby domed tower/whatsit, the result is a hideous mish-mashed-mixtup-mess. Pray that a huge hood-ornament style set of glass wings is not plunked down in front so as to make the whole thing a truly world-famous example of utter, overwhelming kitsch.

As an SB local, born and raised, and beach-goer for over 50 years, I will fight this beach parking fee to the bitter end. We already have that nasty little pay for parking system set up at East Beach and Leadbetter. I have got lots of good exercise walking from blocks away to avoid paying for parking at the beach. 90 minutes for street parking is good at West Beach/Cabrillo Blvd; the turn over rate there is ideal. For Hendry's, Rincon, Goleta and Summerland beaches---who the heck needs to be punished for wanting to spend hours walking on or surfing at the beach? Paying for parking at the beach is tantamount to charging us for being healthy, enjoying our environs and keeping our kids and dogs happy. The fallout from charging for parking would be enormous. Tourists don't mind paying, but we who live here will not suffer this extortion.

I'm glad they caught the guy but am surprised they did an in field identification. The media is full of stories where survivors are shown a suspect by the police and say yes he is the guy but it turns out it really wasn't. The best and fairest way to do this is to put a lineup together at the Police Station and see if the suspect is picked out from a group of similar looking people. Then we don't waste time on trying the wrong guy.

OK, no word as to how much these will cost, but let's CONSERVATIVELY estimate $1 per cup, and compare that with what I drink now, Costco's Sumatra brewed in a $80 Cuisinart coffee maker (that is 8 yrs old and working great). I'm using 12oz as a cup size. ***PER CUP COST*** Cost of Cuisinart coffee maker = $0.005 Cuisinart maintenance (cleaning/water filters) = $0.002 Coffee filters = $0.003 Coffee = $0.09 Total = $0.10 So you wind up paying at least 10X more for coffee that takes longer to make than regular coffee. Yes...LONGER. Unless you drink exactly one cup a day. Buying these frozen coffee-scicles would cost me an extra $150 per MONTH. No thank you.

"A yellow speed limit sign is on designed as a cautionary measure. They inform the driver that a road condition(generally a curve or hill) is coming and that a recommended speed for safety is advised." I trust that the good folks who determined that speed knew what they were talking about -- I am not about to test their theory by going around one of those 154 curves 15mph faster than posted . . . but that's just me. I'd like to get home alive.

811 you can't be serious. Have you ever tried to turn onto APS or Mission Ridge when you are travelling from Foothill? It's risky. No sidewalks, stone walls, odd apexes on the turns, horses, tourists, bikers, etc. Cracks me up how Santa Barbarans accept inadequate roads and driveways all over the place just because that's how it always was and will not accept change, but when somone proposes something new out of the ordinary it's the end of the world. Kind of like complaining about the impacts of new development when you live in a glass house on the Riviera on a lot/street with huge % slope, or on what was once farmland in San Roque.

Apply for a district transfer. Using the reasoning that you have a business in the district and will be able to have your child at school on time each day can help. You will have to state why you want to transfer from the district you are in though. Did your child have a bad experience at the current school? Do all of his or her friends go to Hope? It isn't that easy to get a transfer but if you have a good reason they will work with you. My children have never gone to school in the district we were assigned and we never lied to get a transfer.

Hope School district is a district (like santa barbara and goleta) that only take kids who are living in that district, it is called basic aid funding I think. They will not take your child because they do not want their monies to have to pay for children from outside their area...because they do not receive money for kids from out of district. Your business address is a completely separate issue. The only way to go to a school in that district is to live in the boundary. That is according to law, which the school must follow to earn the most money per student. Your frustration should be with the laws and regulations, not the district.....You will not be able to transfer into Hope District....you used to, but not right now.

A few years ago the Hope district was a "revenue limit" district funded on a per-student basis; more kids = more money from the state. Each kid was a source of revenue. They recruited heavily in certain neighborhoods in Santa Barbara - Mesa, Samarkand, and Hidden Valley mostly. Now, they are a "basic aid" district where they get funded on a fixed basis from local property taxes - it doesn't matter how many kids they have, their funding is the same. Now, each kid is an expense. A couple of years ago they threw out a lot of kids (who they recruited just a few years prior). A lot of hurt feelings there. Best bet; go to your neighborhood school, and as a parent work hard to make it the best school it can be!

Turning onto APS coming down from Foothill is difficult at night. Lighting would help greatly. As for peds crossing the bridge: perhaps there could be an adjacent pedestrian/bike only bridge on the west side. Given the major amount of work the Museum of Natural History wants, that area will be one to avoid if at all possible.

What really chaps my hide is that the truckers (& this has happened to me twice consecutively the last two evenings I've headed up the SB side), when they get to either of the two pull-outs, straddle the lane stripes and HOG BOTH LANES to stop anyone from passing! They do this to avoid having to gear down, fearing they might take even longer to get back up to their already ridiculously slow speed. This should be clue #1 to these drivers that they have no business running those rigs up the Pass in the first place. CHP should be sitting and waiting at the turnouts for an opportunity to witness this & hopefully stick it to 'em and good. I'd tape such an occurrence from my phone & make sure to zoom in on the plate # and forward the video to the CHP, but they'd probably mail ME a citation for "distracted driving". *sigh* P.S. - "something nice"

So, just to clarify for the first few commenters, this has nothing to do with health code violations. Its a stop work order due to city building and/or labor violation. We definitely need health codes and inspectors in our area (and for my tastes, no pun intended, we really need to get with the rest of the state and have health grades posted in our local restaurants to keep us safer.) But this has nothing to do with that.

@871 - you need to read someone's comments and not imagine something else. Did I ever mention crime? No. I wrote "Our safe little EXPENSIVE city to live in is quickly losing its charm." It seems that you are both blind to what other people write and blind to the reality that there has been an increase in transients in this city. Maybe you live in the foothills of Goleta and don't see the transient problem as I do living downtown. Wake up and smell the urine.

The Principals in this District have been know to go to students homes and ask to see where the kids sleep and see where the clothes are hung. If they catch you cheating you are out. So it's good you are being honest. I have several friends who rented their homes in other districts so they could then rent a home in the Hope School District. Divorce won't help. If you are divorced the address that the child sleeps 60 percent or more of the time is the address used for residency. Good luck!!! Hope School District is a GREAT district!!

Having had a alcohol problem in the past and overcoming it takes years, and you never can be complacent. I was 30 when I sobered up, and it took putting me and my sobriety first and identifying the underlying reasons why I drank and fixing those character defects. My biggest problem with Joe is he doesn't seem to take responsibility for his 25 years of alcoholism and at first wanted to blame it on the cops and everybody else other than himself. I still think he is in denial and is just saying what the public wants to hear to save face. He is given a slap on the wrist when almost anyone under similar circumstances would do jail time. To sit and home and still serve on counsel is not working on his drinking problem in my opinion. He is in no position to make decisions until he gets his life under control, I hope he does, but you have to want sobriety more than anything and it takes a lot of work, otherwise you inevitably go back to drinking and end up in prison.

I agree this is a aftershock from the Penn State scandal. I am not taking sides here, but let's not everyone just start making allegations following a trend. I think pedophiles are the worst of the worst, can never be cured, and should serve life sentences, but be honest when coming forward. In one way Penn St. gave people who were sexually abused the power to speak up which is good if it is genuine, on the other there are always going to be people making false claims since it is at the surface now. Remember our tax dollars pay for trials, and Joyce better be sure she has the facts to imprison these people. Oh and Joyce please do not send them away for a mere 6-8 years so they get out and re-offend. These pedophiles can not be cured, ask any psychologist or psychiatrist, they must be locked up for life, your record shows going easy on them.

Read the post before you comment. It said the man was staring at the daughter, then his friends harassed the the mother. Not even close to saying staring is harassing.

Robbery and Battery Arrest |

This happened to my friend by an obviously different man at the parking lot above the old Borders bookstore on State. About 9 months ago. She is very thin and a guy attacked her in broad daylight and tried to steal her purse. She fought back with fierce vengence, not recommended, and kept her purse. Bruised and all. Police have had zero luck in apprehension of the perpetrator.

Unions are the only way for workers and employees to balance the power of corporate employers. Only by uniting into organizations representing employees did we get safe working conditions, 40 hour work weeks, overtime, and representation for wrongful treatment in the workplace. My grown child recently survived the attempted privatization of his workplace because his union paid for a lawyer with labor expertise who was able to prove that the private contractor was guilty of extreme malfeasance in the attempt to oust union workers. Without the union, every person in his department was on track to be "out-sourced." Individual employees cannot negotiate on a level field. Germany requires every corporate board to have employee representatives, a rule the U.S. modeled to them during the Marshall Plan years. We are losing our middle class, and the demise of unions is paving the way.

About a half hour longer going NB the past 2 days at afternoon commute time. 154 may be faster, also more dangerous. I'm good with getting there slower but intact. Roll down the window, turn up the music, laugh at the uptight idiots who can't seem to afford a half hour out of their lives.

Sorry to hear that, polo is a dangerous sport as are others, and sometimes you die. Personally I would have not participated in a sport so dangerous after having kids. I have put my life on the line in many forms of sport for years, but as soon as I have kids it no longer is all about me, and I know I have to step down from the edge. RIP.

Glad that piece of crap is off the streets, use to see him DT and he looked like a crack addict. Police need to start taking preventive measures to get guys like this off the street before they offend. Just makes me want to buy my girlfriend a gun or pepper spray. Everyday I see people obviously drugged out taking up benches and smelling up our business area of town. I am sure cops who frequent that area know the local homeless beer drinkers who really don't commit crimes other than drinking beer in public and fresh faces who are drugged out and look lost. If nothing else get some ID, ask questions, be PROACTIVE.

An alleged white supremacist, Kenne... |

White supremacist hardly, White pride probably. In jail and prison you have to stay with your race and join up with a group of people for your protection. KB is no more racist than any other person who does time in prison, it is prison politics and the general populous is ignorant to it. Ask any warden, CO, or Prison guard, you have no other choice than to stand up for your race.In jail and prison Whites are outnumbered by Mexican and blacks ten fold.If someone puts a hit on you like in his case, you have to act first or you will be a victim. It is a vicious cycle, but I believe KB was protecting himself and taking action to avoid a race war, essentially he prevented further turmoil.I always respected you KB, stay strong and know both your brothers on the outside and in will take care of you. Those rats that testified lies for reduced sentences, hell will find you. 14 words.

Yes this mom was on Edhat stating that two of her daughter's classmates harassed her and was asking advice. They had just moved here. No one should make a judgement until they know all the facts. These were not pedophiles, they were her classmates. There's a big difference.

Most of the 154 traffic from cars have actually no business going on that rd either. Get off the high horse attitude that a person going to work in a car has more business on the pass than someone in a semi truck who is actually working. If you don't like the pass than why do you use it?

#958 I was curious how it would look from the air, and like you didn't realize how big it is. The whole blueberry patch is covered with mesh to keep the birds out, and that makes it even more remarkable. But we saw several birds that had found a way in and even a smart one that remembered how to get back out.

#961P, as you hint I'd go often if they had a landing strip. Still it was interesting riding with our friends on the 101, and then flying the route afterward to see the same places from the air. Having not driven it for a long time we'd forgotten how many beautiful and interesting things you can't see from the highway.

I really hate the "new" airport and agree with others that it was a terrible waste of money. I have found it to be slower and less efficient than the"old" airport, and there's not even a place to get a cup of coffee or a drink with a friend before they take a flight. Completely lacking any kind of charm, this could be an airport anywhere. So sad. Not well thought out at all, in my opinion. I wish they had just left well enough alone.
