To the kayaker complaining about the wait to get in Cachuma--you must have been there on an off off day because it takes nowhere near that to get inspected & launch. Boats only cruise through if they have a security tag, that indicates the boat has already been through inspection for invasive mussels. Kayakers don't get those tags because the tags ensure the boat hasn't been removed from the trailer & launched elsewhere (inc. potentially contaminated lakes), and you can't do that with a kayak.

@907: They do it when the cops aren't rooking. What a mess! Cherries everywhere. Not to mention all those damned blossoms all over the place. At least in Carpinteria they don't throw avocados, and I've only seen very few strawberries hurled in Oxnard. I think living on a small island like Japan makes the people go a little nuts when the cherry blossoms blanket everything.

I remember hearing on my scanner that a large piece of cardboard on fire, from the dump was floating over the city and landed behind the Double Tree on the tracks. I figured the wind shifted causing embers from the dump to cause the Painted Cave fire. I was at 154 and Calle Real when the fire swept down right in front of us I never saw anything like that in my whole life..

Whether you can swim in a reservoir or not has more to do with where the community got the money to build the damn than it has to do with water quality. Cachuma was built with federal funds and that comes with federal rules, so no swimming in the water source. Lopez and Nacimiento lakes were built with other funds so you can swim there. There is no difference in the quality or safety of the water, just bureaucratic rules and regulations. Lakes that have not allowed swimming usually get taken over by fisherman. The fisherman are loathe to have the rules change once the mortgage is paid off since by that time they see it as "their" lake. That is what happened when our morgage was finally paid off. Thank the fisherman that you can't swim in the lake when the temps reach 100.

Realizing that that fire was 15 minutes away from anyone, dependent only upon the wind was very scary. Even more scary was the realization that advancing at 60 mph one cannot out-run/ drive from the fire. Fire dept officials agreed and say, "Oh yes, shelter in place." How many homes in SB are suitable for shelter in place? We were very lucky it was not more deadly.

779 As a youth I camped and hiked much of the back country behind lake Cachuma. Most of th tributaries do not flow from cattle country: There are very few grazing operations and cattle ranches anywhere near the source of water flowing into Cachuma. There are many downstream from the lake. The was, as one writer said, a number of open mercury mining operations upstream which would not be allowed today. There is also a lot of natural Arsenic in some of the land upstream from Cachuma. The prohibition against swimming is legally a result of Bureau of Reclamation rules covering drinking water resevoirs and lack of practical motivation to lift it and have the character of the park and lake change drastically as some writers have said.

I've heard hyperbolic GaN propaganda since I first went to work at UCSB in 2000. It serves to protect those involved in the unaccountable criminal UCSB racket that facilitates the corrupt exchange of corporate welfare for tokens of patronage. Seoul Opto is playing the same game as Cree Lighting that exchanged the pittance of a token endowment for a much greater dollar value in corporate welfare funneled to them through UCSB. Even after having incubated and nurtured Cree's success, UCSB, Lois Capps and other dim politcos let North Carolina reap the harvest after California sowed and cultivated the crop when Cree built its $300 million R&D facility in NC instead of Goleta. Closing criminal UCSB would be a good action that actually stimulated the economy.

Painted Cave Fire Recap |
2012-07-04 08:02 AM |
|
I lived through the Painted Cave Fire and lost my home and pretty much everything I owned except the two cars we fled in. With all due respect to the Fire fighters, the disaster planning and incident response was very poor, due to the speed of the fire and the inadequate advance planning including water supply access. Previous major fires like the Coyote and Sycamore Canyon fires did not move as fast as the wind blown Painted Cave fire. The dry conditions from years of drought, dried out shake shingle roofs on many homes, poor communication and the location of the fire in what is an area most like a natural wind tunnel on the south coast, were all factors. There were half a dozen fire trucks staged at Tuckers grove that never moved when here were homes burning up less than a half a mile away. We have done much better in planning for such a fire today in large part because of the Painted Cave fire experience.

Hmmm.. nextdoor is a data mining company out of San Francisco, also running a site called fanbase, run by former google and yahoo dropouts, funded by Benchmark Capital and Shasta Ventures. Interesting to see the other holdings these firms have and the connection they have to new businesses that have arrived in SB. No matter how suspicious I am of all that I've read so far, I think it was wierd that city council took action to "approve" this. Do we need approval from these folks to use a social networking site? Is the council calendar so empty that this is what they occupy time with? I have a feeling there is more to this than meets the eye.

I was lucky enought to have worked with Jerry in the Host Lyons Club on many projects and in starting up the Athletic roundtable and then lucky enough to be asked by Jerry to be on the Executive Board of Las Positas Park Foundation for the first 8 years when we did all the initial planning, building and fundraising. I spent so much time on my business telephone trying to raise funds many clients, friends and associates did not want to return business calls thinking I was hitting them up again for money for the park. I was even motivated by his enthusiasm to write a poem about the park which Jerry loved. He was a shrewd businessman but his devotion to giving back to the community, particularly to athletics at all ages and levels was phenominal. He was the kind of person that made Santa Barbara great the past 5 or 6 decades and hopefully it will still be into the future. I wish we could have him for another 100 years.

What's most fascinating to me is that this is a direct continuation of work begun in the 1950s in infrared technology, and continued at SBRC (now Raytheon) under people like my Dad. The aerospace background of many of today's materials science discoveries needs to be understood and lauded. Just as military/ government funding supported the majority of the early research in the internet (DARPA-Net), for military purposes, and then much later, it became a general civilian benefit, the same pattern applies to a great deal of optical physics and materials work. Basic scientific research is important, and we should continue to fund it at a national level.

There are several of these in Alice Keck. We had three on the property which thankfully were recently removed. Root system is a nightmare, it took the walkway up in the front yard. The dropping flowers are fine, but they drop ALL their leaves in the winter and they are tiny leaves. They grow really fast and dropped sap all over everything. Fine for a park, but I highly suggest you keep them out of your yard.

This is a stupid law with no rational purpose. It's similar to the decades-old ban on non-powered watercraft such as kayaks and sailboats, while motorboats were allowed. If sediment from the Sunbird mercury mine were a health issue, swimming in the river would be banned as well. There isn't a risk of human bacteria species polluting a body of water as large as Lake Cachuma.

The story about the homeless guy is pretty funny but sad too! I wish that there weren't so many vagrants here, it would be so much safer and cleaner. SB caters to them though, without asking the residents what we want. Our town is run by people that don't care about the town, it makes no sense! I work downtown and see homeless people leaning up against buildings with their pants down so they can poop while standing up and see all kinds of other gross things too. It really taints how I feel about this city that we are overrun with homeless people to the point of it being an infestation, like SB has scabies! It's sad :( Have a fun & safe 4th Roger! I imagine that the scanner will get really interesting today.

This group gets free access to all the city's eyeballs for their later marketing schemes, which in turn makes them more valuable to the companies wanting access to our eyeballs, our targeted by neighborhood eyeballs. Marketers will pay more for Riviera eyeballs than they will for Milpas eyeballs. And your city is now handing all the eyeballs in the city for their fun and profit. You don't have to sign up, but I agree the city should not be in the business of delivering city eyeballs to a private enterprise whose stated up front interest is to sell us things later. But hook us with "free" access first. This company could have come to town and advertised directly to get people to sign up. Instead they got the city to sign us up indirectly, lock stock and barrel.

Painted Cave Fire Recap |
2012-07-04 10:43 AM |

I hate to say it, folks, but we are ripe for this to happen all over again. Fire-fighting resources--particularly air-attack resources--are more limited than ever; we are in the midst of a drought in the West. Even if our area is not as impacted, should a fire break out here and not be dealt with immediately, we would be competing with other areas for manpower and equipment. Keep clearing brush, get rid of wood shake roofs, and if aliens need to land on the premises, make sure there is no dry grass nearby.

I remember swimming in the designated area for swimmers in about 1967. It seems bass-ackwards that motorized craft can pollute those waters, but I can't swim there. I think we need to get an official explanation of why not. Duh, we know you're not suppose to pee in or near rivers & lakes & water reservoirs (100 yards away, I think). I would LOVE to see gas motors banned & have people learn to sail... oil is polluting EVERYTHING-Yucky...of course it's not as serious as our nuclear power plants' practice of releasing radioactive steam! No one even talks about it! Much bigger prob.

Painted Cave Fire Recap |

I worked at the Main Post Office and several of our employees were directly impacted by that fire. ~~~~~~~~~~One letter carrier's roommate was the only fatality. One clerk lived on El Sueno lost his house, but was happy to find that some of his prized Koi Fish survived, and two clerks losts condos on Hollister & Modoc. One of those people were on vacation, but came home immediately and started searching for their cat. They went to the area and started calling for the cat, and sure-enough the cat came out of the debris in good shape.

Who provides the music, the fireworks, the food, the table & chairs, etc. And we haven't yet thought about the medical, fire, police who are available to us daily even when 'nobody' is working.

I was home alone on W. Camino and called my mom's pager just after it started because the electricity went out. We watched the bombers fly so close over our house that I could see that the pilot was wearing a green shirt. After the first day or two we evacuated to Cielo Store where I spent a night under a shelf. Then we evacuated to my dad's house in Goleta. It is forever ingrained in my memory.

When Lopez lake was being built the word was that they were building a separate pond before the water intake to allow the contaminats to settle and be removed. This made swimming in the main lake legal. Water is pumped directly from Cachuma so no swimming. We were told that is what caused different rules for Lopez, Santa Margarita, Nacmiento, and Cachuma.

Shoreline Park was busy already at 8 am. Western parking lot is booked. Many tables were "reserved" by yellow tape yesterday. Most of them have people at them now, but one is still taped and empty. Where are they going to park once they get here to claim "their" space? Must be frustrating for folks looking for a place to picnic, to see an unused table. If it was me, I'd just take it over, at this point.

In a drought prone region with few water resources and a large population - think the millions in LA Co who count SB Co as a recreation area - the rule is probably necessary, though sad. I am glad they added the kayaks and canoes, and would vote to add SUP boards, as all three craft, operated with even a modicum of skill, rarely result in a dousing. Also, they charge a pretty good fee for each craft, and that automatically limits excessive use. Use discretion in civilian policing - there was no immediate danger to anyone, and the rangers would get to them eventually if they keep it up. Hopefully they, too, exercise discretion and don't make juvenile delinquents out of innocent youth. We really don't want to live in a nation of meanies. Also, first tell the folks the activity is off limits. Then, you've done your bit, the rest is up to them. Just my thoughts.

The scams all operate on taking advantage of the "victim's" greed. The checks may be stolen or fraudulently created as duplicates of legitimate checks drawn against legitimate bank accounts. There is usually a plausible story about how they received the check in payment for something sold to someone else, and how they have some temporary issue that prevents them from putting the check through their own bank. So, the bait is that if you help them out by cashing a $1,500. check through your own account, you can keep perhaps $300. and just give the other party $1,200. and both sides are happy. Happy, that is, until the bogus check bounces back to your bank account, and your bank lets you know that you have an overdraft of $1,200.00 in your account.

Once again, what is wrong with just talking face-to-face with the neighbors you want to talk with? I certainly don't give out my phone number to all of my neighbors and I don't add all of them as 'friends' on Facebook. TMI. All it takes with this new database is some teenage punk to hack his parents' account and he'll know who's on vacation, who's away on business, etc. The punk can figure out who is a feel-good liberal and who's a gun-toting NRA member. Who has a rottweiler and who has a teacup poodle. Makes it too easy to commit crimes and too easy to spy on each other.

The web/net is still in it's Wild Wild West era. We don't know if it's capability will be exercised for the public (read, "individual") benefit, or for private (read, "corporate" or "corrupted government") benefit. It's up to We the People to pay enough attention to vote intelligently, and frankly, for the past decade or more things do not look that encouraging. Example, why doesn't the FCC require all licensees to provide a % of bandwidth for public service political messaging, eliminating $$ in politics? It's our government, we have to make it work. There is every reason to be cautious with these technologies we really don't fully understand or control.

I actually heard another rumor about the no swimming rule. Not sure where I heard it, and not sure I believe it... but I remember hearing something about objects in the lake, whether there were pipes, old equipment, etc... but that those objects were a safety issue and not safe. When we would go fishing one our boat, it would get really hot, instead of jumping in the water, we would just pull up buckets of water and dump them over our heads to get cool.

294032 - The Tipus on Via Diego are street trees, and as such are City of SB property. With proper care they are great trees to line avenues, and in this instance are properly situated. Imagine the street without them. Imagine the dramatically reduced property values without them. The street is beautiful because of the trees; not because of the surrounding buildings. Any plant is a weed in the wrong place. The Via Diego trees are NOT weeds.

and one could only slowlllllly and barely get out Puente (from More Mesa) to Hollister because that is on the only ingress and egress...people from Hope Ranch coming into Puente with their horse trailers. It was hopeless to get out, and NOW they've built SO MANY MORE homes off Puente, and now want to build MORE...without any way to get out in the case of a disaster. Of course, once one hit Hollister, you couldn't move then, either.

Two big tails at CostCo are ~$20. Take home, cut and clean, baste with butter/parsley/garlic/lemon/salt and pepper mixture. Place lobster tails, shell down, on grill and cook until shells turn red - about 5 minutes. Brush meat again with butter mixture, turn and grill for further 5-8 minutes on meat side until flesh turns white. Turn meat side up, brush once more with butter and sprinkle lightly with paprika. Cook for further 1-2 minutes. You won't have better.

Coming off of La Colina and turning on to Via Diego this time of year is the most beautiful parklike avenue in a green tunnel with yellow carpeting. We just call them the Cheeto Trees. Their winged seeds will be filling up the rain gutters as the weeks progress.

Second the Costco vote. Lobster tails are easy to cook, not usually worth the premium price in a restaurant, where what you're paying for ostensibly is the skill of the cook, not just the ingredients. Lobster freezes well, not a problem if it's properly stored. You are probably not going to find fresh lobster right now unless it's living in a tank at a fish market.

As dry & fire prone as this county is, all fireworks ought to be illegal - period. I'm always amazed how many fireworks stands saturate Santa Maria. Listening to the various groups tell how many people are coming to buy from other areas of the county where they are illegal is amazing. Go let the pros shoot them off & enjoy.

Those who ridicule the rules and those of us who prefer the no-swimming rules remain, fail to understand that there are those of us who would also prefer to see no motor-boating allowed in Cachuma either. To those who have no problem with allowing potentially thousands of visitors to "swim" in our drinking water supply, bear in mind that well-documented surveys have revealed that when polled anonymously, over 60% of those who swim in public lakes, ponds, and municipal swimming pools, admit to urinating, and occasionally spewing diarrhea right into that same water. You naysayers all OK with that in your tap water? I choose to consume only pure distilled water because I don't need all the micro-organisms and bacteria, together with the Intestine-destroying Chlorine and Fluoride added to the water at the dictate of our public officials.

You haven't been bombed with targeted ads yet because the company's gimmick they stated up front in their public presentations when the question was asked, is to offer it for free to get the city's endorsement access and number of local eyeballs first. Then after a free trial period and sufficient numbers of signups to brag about to advertisers, they swoop in with their eyeball harvest and make their own money marketing your eyeballs and your interests on the side. And after this free trial period, they will have mined sufficient information from your posts to know how to target each set of eyeballs and know the socio-demographics of each "neighborhood", again for more precise marketing levels. They will sell the Milpas eyeballs to one marketer and the Riviera eyeballs to another and the Mesa eyeballs to a third.

Our flag is flying and our neighborhood is tranquil. I remember visiting Independence Hall in Philadelphia several years ago and I teared up thinking how people put their lives and fortunes on the line in order to achieve our independence. At the time I knew that there was one Revolutionary War patriot on my family tree. Since then I have proven six more much to my surprise. We need to think of all of the patriots who have fought for our freedom and are doing so right now. Celebrate and remember the meaning of the Fourth of July.

This was in the news today -- the low prices are hurting Maine's lobstermen: http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/cheaper-than-bologna-glut-drives-down-maine-lobster-prices-ahead-of-tourist-season/2012/07/02/gJQAN16OIW_story.html When I visited family in Maine many years ago, I remember seeing lots of stands on the roads where you could buy fresh-caught lobster. We bought some and cooked it. Yum!

Sadly, there are still people around, with little-to-no regard for Nature and the balance of life in the habitat we all must share. Such people think nothing of mass-destruction of God's creatures, all of which play a needed and vital role on our Earth. It still seems to be a dim, dark mystery to our Scientists, as to why there has been such a massive die-off of honeybees world-wide. Some think the chem-trails have something to do with it. Others believe that the pesticides, herbicides, and inorganic fertilizers approved for agricultural use, by our Government agencies, may have played a contributing role. Whatever the case, we need the honeybees much more than they need us. We need to rid ourselves of the attitude that says "squish it." That attitude spells collective suicide by stupidity, kinda like the Kool Aid they served to 900 people at Jonestown, Guyana, back in 1978.

Can't be done.... heck the same cook can make the same dish very differently one day over the next, so consistency across 3 different kitchens is a pipe dream.

In the mid 90's I was on UCSB's crew (that's the rowing team). We practiced and raced at Cachuma all year long. One terrible stormy day, we were caught in large waves, and our boat swamped (sank). We had to swim it to the shore....where the ranger was waiting and ticketed each of us. We all had to pay the fine before the team was allowed back on the water.

It used to be worth the drive across the border to Puerto Nuevo in Baja - $7 bucks with sides, flour tortillas and all the chips and salsa you could also put down. They were great. Then they started gunning down tourists ........ Fish Enterprise on the absolute bottom of my list for anything too. Don't know how they have survived for so long. I think they liquor up their patrons with happy hour specials so much they don't know what poor quality food they are getting in the dining room

Best lobster I've ever had: a fish camp on Isla Cedros, off the coast of Baja California. The lobster had been out of the water maybe 15 minutes before being cooked, and they wouldn't let us pay for it. It's decades ago, and I still salivate at the memory.

My suggestion for your special lobster day is.....Seagrass Restaurant.... Champagne and butter poached Maine lobster with Santa Barbara red sea urchin sauce. They are a member of the sustainable seafood program. I think you will love it! I think I talked myself into having a special lobster day:-) There is no comparison between Maine lobster and West Coast lobster.....I will skip the lobster if it's not from Maine, I find West Coast squishy and tasteless, it's OK in soups and sauces, but that's about it.
