Here Kitty, Kitty!

2012-06-29 01:16 AM

Hi Kate,

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for adopting these 2 special fur babies. From the moment we met, I immediatly knew that you are the "pur"fect human for Hank and Sophie. Please keep our team, as well as Edhat subscribers posted as they adjust into their new loving forever home. Hope your other kitties welcome them with open paws.
Cheers, and congrats.
Now we need to place the little black female kitten that was dumped off in a box on our driveway. Photo's to soon follow. Thank you, Animal Rescue Team, Inc. Julia

Wake up and smell the coffee people. Don't waste time with PRC. tell the city council to enact some of the recommendations from the engineering study done a few years back. Maybe we can sell it to one of the McCaws to use for a yacht berth.

The Santa Barbara School Board pass...

2012-06-29 06:48 AM

Tracy misrepresents the situation. School employees all belong to the unions. Any money coming into the schools unless they are restricted construction bonds, go to union members to pay for their increasingly costly demands.

Parcel money can be spent anyway the school board wants. This means there is more money someplace else that pays for these constantly increasing union benefit.

Tracy needs to stop treating voters as stupid. Some of us were educated before teachers unions took over schools and the school boards and before California education was dumbed down by these very teacher union members to the unaccountable mess that it is today.

Down to the Dump

2012-06-29 07:25 AM

Doing the safe removal of mold- and fungus- infected building materials is not for the inexperienced and untrained, if only for their own protection, and for that of the future occupants/owners. Containment of the spores should be maximized, or it can gain a foothold elsewhere. ( *Infectious Disease physician at Stanford)

If as the OP states, the mold IS everywhere, and the 'cottage' (tear-down?) is so fully involved it will need to be gutted, hiring a professional, and getting documentation of the work being done to code, will protect the property owner from possible lawsuit exposure, and future occupants from health risk.

It says much that the OP did not address safety but only economics.

Hikers Rescued

It's been a few years since I hiked the front country trails but if their aim was Montecito Pk what were they doing on Tunnel trail? and how did they end up at 7 Falls in 9 hours? None of this makes any sense as the first trail marker to 7 Falls is one that runs in the opposite direction from their alleged destination. Were they blondes? This whole story smells of a classic "blondes joke".

Perhaps it's the story they told SAR so as not to look like the total dingbats for 'shroomin' in the woods with no breadcrumb trail to lead them back out.

I miss the St. Francis Hospital alot, but some things that have changed for the worse, we can do nothing about. I'm ready to support the Goleta Valley Cottage. I was walking my dog on the Mesa last night and had this exact thing happen to my dog. In the neighborhood near the Douglas Preserve people seem to think it is OK to have your dog just hanging around out front with no leash. We have been charged and attacked numerous times, the owners never seem to care. Is there anything we can do about this? Last night the dog actually ran across the street through traffic to attack our dog. The owner was out there and never even apologized.

292416 - Probably the only reason you are whining about your retirement money is because you panicked and withdrew it all when the the market was at its nadir.

The fact is that since this date in 2006, the DJIA has INCREASED by 15%!!! Over 6 years that's an average annual INCREASE of 2.35%. Also, over that time span, the DJIA increase has beaten the inflation rate.

And for those approaching retirement age, who have paid into a 401K their entire career, the DJIA has averaged a yearly INCREASE of 8.6%.

The sky is NOT falling, folks.

Every Santa Barbarian interested in the history of Santa Barbara should read Tompkins books. In the chapter on Powers he actually quotes a woman named Kate Den Bell who was born in 1844 on DP Ranch and was the "dowager queen of Santa Barbara's elite society until she died in 1926." According to the book she wrote in 1919, "To Santa Barbara came the handsome, magnetic daredevil Jack Powers, with his lawless 'Band of Five' - a mere handful, but our town surrendered without protest, and it's dark disgraceful days were begun....Powers and his band were in complete control of Santa Barbara and its leaders."

If you rear end a car by mistake and the police come out to take a statement do you get a bill for the time? How about if your fender bender causes a major traffic jam and the sheriff sends up a chopper to keep an eye on things, do you get a bill for that? Should you?

What is the precedence we set if some actions require you to pay for civil service (that you already pay taxes for). People might not ask for help when needed if they fear they cant afford it. Who decides if your emergency was valid, or you are too "blond" and must get a bill. Lets all try something, think ... then type.

Sustainable Ocean Solutions

For decades UCSB has overlooked the pumping of only partially treated human waste into Goleta Bay via a big poopoo pipe. Retaining dilution as the solution this far into the 21st Century is excellent evidence that most academic personnel devoted to environmental health within UCSB ivory towers overlooking Goleta Bay are opportunistic poseurs. UCSB is rendered a worse than worthless liability when it propagandizes only an appearance of virtue while contributing largely to the disgusting dumping in the sea of the local population's daily defecations.

Foul fecal fumes from the other excrement plant wafting over on the night and morning land breeze to precipitate on UCSB and it's personnel are a reminder that UCSB is unacceptably unaccountable.

This long-ignored outrage of pollution is an issue where UCSB could make a positive contribution to a community where it abuses enormous unaccountable power.

If the Daily Sound would boldly pronounce its new dedication to the Code of Ethics of the Society of Professional Journalists and live by that Code that no other SB or Goleta publication apparently recognizes, I think it would quickly become the best and favorite publication of the region while going far to expose the rampant unaccountabilty of local criminal organizations breaking the law with impunity.

Or I could be wrong and it would fail quickly as the Santa Barbara and Goleta communities continued to merely presume and pretend that they were virtuous.

And before you get on your high horse about rich, idle horse owners - At 55+ yrs, I work 60+ hours a week, forego cable TV, first run movies and recreational shopping to keep my horse in very modest circumstances as do many, many other folks in town. Of course I hope the doggies involved are OK. Dogs are the best! But the OP is too open, too vague. Are you looking for a witness to help you bring a case against someone? Affordable Care Act

They can force you to have insurance but they can't force you to go see a doctor if you need one, they can't force you to use good preventative care, and they can't force you to stop smoking / drinking / doing drugs. To me this whole health care boondoggle is a zero-sum game, and whether our tax dollars go to pay for the uninsured or they go to pay for the plethora of extra people that will have medicare, we won't see much difference.

What I hope happens is that the people that in the past go to the emergency room for a sniffle will have an option.

Dog Fight

2012-06-29 10:59 AM

Many years ago, as we walked our terrier mix along the sidewalk, he was attacked... by a Collie, which surprised me. My husband was really quick with pulling out his belt and hitting the Collie, who then let go. Our little guy had long hair, and when we looked him over at home, he had puncture wounds in his neck with his hair forced down in them, 1/2" deep!

But the real point I wanted to make is that maybe OP is the owner of the attacking dogs. I know that I wished I had had a witness to the attack of my dog... but I was afraid to even go up to the door for fear of being attacked myself, by the Collie or his two equally large friends on his yard.

Just as you ask for witnesses to an accident you were involved in, sometimes folks reach out. Give OP a break; he may be wanting to prove his dogs weren't the attackers.

As a parent who has two small children who don't have insurance I am hoping that this will bring affordable options to my family. I have a "good job" and people of the community would think good benefits but to add my children on to my work insurance is over $700 a month. They are very healthy and rarely need to go in for any reason to see a doctor but they are kids and play ground accidents and such do happen. Paying full price in an emergency is heavy financial burden. I miss the days I could afford insurance for them and I felt at peace.

Affordable Care Act

2012-06-29 11:16 AM

While the ACA is by no means perfect, one of the good features, is that insurance companies have to spend 80% of costs on healthcare and not on administrative costs. Many will be receiving rebate checks this year because of this.

"Rebate checks are part of a provision in the health care law that requires insurance companies to use 80 percent of collected premiums on medical services. If they don’t, they have to send rebates to policyholders for the difference."

It is somewhat a paradox of our society that given a list of the provisions in the ACA, most people thing they are good things to implement. However, the publicized name has been smeared to such an extent, that there is an impression that it is a bad thing. And according to the CBO, the ACA will reduce the deficit.

The ONLY part of the ACA that is a tax, is the penalty for not paying for health coverage - and in the first year it is $99 and there is no enforcement to collect it.

Btw, liberals had such a hard time with the mandate part (a republican idea from the Heritage Foundation and implemented in MA) of the ACA, that they watered it down to next to nothing.

If you pay premiums, the tax part is simply not there. There is no difference between what was paid before and what is paid now.

Affordable Care Act

2012-06-29 11:35 AM

292635P - I don't care what the CBO says. This will NOT reduce the deficit. If this does not get overturned I predict that Medicare will approach going broke, which will in turn increase the Medicare tax withheld from all our paychecks. So not only will people be forced to buy insurance (whose premiums will grow exponentially and which will eventually have such high co-pays that you might as well pay the bill yourself) they will also be forced to pay the extra cost of the millions of extra people on Medicare.

If you are not going to nationalize the whole system then simply let the sick, poor, and uninsured die. Survival of the fittest. Easy-peasy. We are all entitled to an education which leads to a diploma which leads to a job that offers insurance. If you choose a different path then that's your problem.

What 292641P and 292648 fail to understand is that when Medicare and Medi-Cal's costs skyrocket then so will our taxes to cover it.

Also, unless you are blind (or don't have insurance) you have already seen the pre-emptive strike by insurance companies on premiums and co-pays. This year our premiums went up over 25% and the co-pays doubled. Expect more increases in the next few years.

Great news, lots of level headed analysis here (in the OP and the replies). I welcome all opinions but see @649 as an example of how not to win an argument. I see your facts and raise you a "so what". If you challenge the CBO then be specific. Was the methodology botched, where did they make a mistake, do you propose they lied, why?

It takes a lot of gas to turn a ship around. This is the first phase of an inevitability to nationalize health care. One step at a time. I believe we will be the last developed nation to have a national health care system, but it will happen. It sickens me to hear Americans cheer at the thought of the poor and uninsured dying in the street because they are sick or injured. This happend on national tv at GOP debates as well as in online forums etc... all the time. You judge a civilization on things like that, not how well the most fortunate live.

Affordable Care Act

2012-06-29 12:06 PM

The Supreme Court's historic ruling brought sighs of relief to California health officials.

"This ruling makes it possible for us to complete the work that we’ve started and be ready in January 2014 to begin providing health security to nearly 6 million Californians who are uninsured," said Diana Dooley, secretary of the California Health and Human Services (CHHS) agency, which operates Medi-Cal and a number of other health programs. "We’ve had many starts and stops, and we are now in the full-go mode."

California was first in the nation to begin the complex and expensive process of creating a health care exchange program required and funded by the federal health reform law. The idea is to provide a state-run marketplace that offers a smorgasbord of private health insurance plans to small businesses and to Californians who don’t have employee-sponsored insurance. Low-income residents will get subsidies to help them buy insurance.

"We look forward to making the purchase of insurance through California’s exchange as easy as buying a book on Amazon and shoes on Zappos," said Peter Lee, executive director of the exchange. Lee says by October 2013, Californians will be able to compare and choose plans based on costs and benefits. "And we’re going to be moving full speed ahead to build this marketplace, to make it easier for all Californians to get access to affordable insurance," he said.

http://www.scpr.org/news/2012/06/28/33020/us-supreme-court-ruling-moves-california-forward-p/

Is this not what the right wants - a free market for people to choose from?

292652: What you fail to understand is that we already cover these costs through taxes, higher medical bills, and higher insurance premiums. And uninsured people tend to only use the MOST EXPENSIVE healthcare providers, also known as "emergency rooms". When they can obtain healthcare at a doctor's office, we will all save.

And yes, insurers have been raising rates knowing it's their last chance to gouge customers before the laws go into effect that make them stop this practice. But the ACA will force them to issue rebates beginning THIS YEAR if they're not actually spending 80% of premiums on healthcare, so there's a good chance you're getting a rebate and/or will pay less in the future.

Dog Fight

There is a great little invention that more dog walkers should purchase and utilize. It is called "Quiet Spot," and is a small neoprene pouch. (itzadog-dot-com --no hyphens, natch) This pouch holds your dog's tags, such as license tag and i.d. tag. It protects tags from wear and tear. It keeps dogs' tags from jangling at night (if dogs scratch, ever).

This pouch also has one immensely beneficial side-effect:

A great many dogs lie in wait in their yards, listening for the sound of clinking dog tags. Since using Quiet Spot for past 10 years, on my various dogs, I have avoided A LOT of "ambush"- type dog barking. I think this little pouch also helps to avoid the dogs- running- out -to- investigate syndrome, and the ensuing encounters.

Just a suggestion. Also: "attacks" rarely involve injury; merely dogs intimidating, investigating.

The detritus goes into the ocean, cars pollute with all of the bumper-to-bumper traffic. The city may benefit from the tourism, but then there's the tremendous beach clean-up costs.

I woke up this morning and we're still here! China has not invaded and people are still working, living and being.

If you listened to the right it was as if the end of the world had arrived.

But like most of their hyperbole - its rooted in fear and not fact.

The count was more around 30 to 50,000 Chumash Natives prior to European contact...but the responders are fairly correct about the rest of the comments..but one fact is missing..the Missions, all 21, were notorius child sex-slave quarters. Chumash children as young as 4 & 5,but not older than 15..were routinely gang-raped to death. I remember one letter written to King Carlos III, describing the gang-rape of a child who was tied to a fence,in view of everyone..raped for 3 days & then ran through with a sword. Wonder why we don`t participate in "Old Spanish days"??...I pray for the healing of this place & it`s peoples.....a Chumash.

Affordable Care Act

2012-06-29 02:16 PM

If the health care system is over-burdened now, when people who can't afford care or insurance only seek help for the worst of their illnesses, how will it be when those same people will get unlimited care for free (to them). This will simply add extra care for those who can't/won't pay, to be paid for by those who are paying now. Insurance for myself and my husband is @$1,500 per month, I expect to have to pay twice that in the next few years, thru premiums and extra taxes. And for a lesser quality of care. People nowadays define "can't afford" as "unwilling to give up my TV, cable, cell phone, new clothes, car, house/apartment than costs more than a 30% of my gross income, vacations, cigarettes, alcohol, junk food and Starbucks".

Affordable Care Act

2012-06-29 02:36 PM

648 - According to healthcare.gov, the amount of rebate people should expect is $65 a year. According to USA today though, premiums are expected to increase 1.5% under the new law. Everyone thinks this is Universal healthcare and it's all going to be free or like $100 a month. It's going to be higher than what most people pay now. What's the incentive to make more money? Higher taxes and higher insurance rates? Most people would rather stay under poverty and just kick it while the government gives you housing, insurance and some spending money.

Affordable Care Act

2012-06-29 03:04 PM

292671: I already pay for our neighborhood kids to go to K-12 school (I chose not to procreate), and I pay cops to take other people to jail if they break the law (I last broke the law as a kid, couple of decades ago). So yes; I will pay and will pay slightly more if need-be so that a neighbor can go to the doctor when they are sick and that bill won't bankrupt them.

It's called being an educated and healthy society. The rest of the world gets it. Americans seem slow to learn that this. You want to live in a country where your neighbors are sick and hurting and broke because of it? I don't.

@699 the people who are "whining" (I'd call it commenting) are the ones who will pay the lion's share for the others who can't/won't pay. Its not a matter of whether you want health care or not- everyone wants it. Its a matter of paying more than your share to support those who won't pay their share. I don't like that idea at all, do you?

Affordable Care Act

2012-06-29 03:30 PM

292700: I don't know what your number is referring to, but I'm referring to this info which was published everywhere just last week:
"The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) just announced that 12.8 million Americans will receive a health rebate for $1.1 billion because of the Affordable Care Act's 80/20 rule. This averages to about $152 for each family covered by an insurance policy."

Only a fool who doesn't understand a thing about heathcare costs thinks insurance will only be $100 / month. That 1.5% increase you quote pales in comparison to the increases you've been experiencing year after year without the ACA. And what evidence do you have that people will be paying more than they do now? Zero, because that's a bunch of fearmongering that you've chosen to buy into. With the new 80/20 rules, they're only going to be able to increase premiums if your insurer is spending more than 80% of your premiums on actual healthcare.

Not every salon uses fresh/sterile water, 745. That's a big mistake to make when it comes to salons. Most of them are dirty and the water may be fresh, but they don't really do a good job of sanitizing the tub that the water goes into. That's where all the bacteria and fungus lives and breeds.

OP, check out Aqua Nail bar. They don't reuse tools, so you can be sure that your grandma's funky big toenail won't be passed on to someone else and they do sanitize their communal bowls so that she won't pick up anything else there, too.

Any higher end salon will also probably be better at hygiene than the cheaper places, which don't really follow the letter of the law when it comes to sanitizing their equipment or chairs/stations.

Also, you are a sweet granddaughter for doing this and I hope you guys have a good time!

I live next door, they landed at Cottage. No question, no speculation, they landed on the roof of the building doors away from me. I won't complain that they were hovering, because they really weren't. One came in as the other was leaving - no one was hovering unnecessarily, they were just making the best use of time - one coming while one was going (which may be why it sounded like they were all over the place - there were two, not one). How is it that someone who lives DIRECTLY under where the helicopters fly and land is bothered less by this than other either blocks away, or not even in the flight path? Yes, it's loud. So is traffic, the train and the freeway. Suck it up.
Side note: I'm pretty sure the OP just wanted to know why - figures it would have been a pretty big accident for multiple helicopters, and nothing was mentioned here.

Tracy you need to think why your health care costs have gone up so much. Because the health care companies know your teacher unions will demand schools using our taxdollars pay them anything the health care companies want.

However, this cosy and unaccountable system is now so stretched there is tax payer backlash. We are tired of paying your bills, Tracy. We are tired of you blaming the taxpayers instead of the insurance companies you demand to still get for free.

No one cares if you are paying more for health insurance, Tracy. Because you are still getting way more health care insurance than anyone else gets and using our tax dollars to pay for it. Think about this and let this sink in. We don't care if you have to pay more. Who pays if you don't?

I had to retire her from showing, and couldn't have her loose among other dogs. Because she was "mostly" fine, but I was unwilling to have her cause the same damage to another dog.

I did not propose the alternatives in my posting. The reality is some of the posters want police vigilance at 3AM to bust the taggers and in the same posting complain about the police busting seat belt violators or crosswalk stings.

Have you read the most recent article about a family of three in Orange county getting hit in the crosswalk by a hit and run. One of the little girls died. The mother and her other daughter are in critical condition. They were hit, tossed over the car's hood, flew and landed on their itty, bitty heads. One's dead, dead, dead.

He must have friends in high places, or maybe he just pays off the police. Either way, with 100+ properties in SB for 45 years, this guy is mega wealthy, and that will usually keep someone above the law.

I think she could benefit from an appointment with a good dermatologist. Not too many people escape nail fungus at some time in their life, especially if they are athletic and visit gyms and swimming pools and spas.

There is some research that suggests the fungus may travel in the blood and affect other areas of the body in a negative way. Good to take care of it if possible. Maybe even have her apply Fungi Nail 2 X 3 times daily to that toe for a month or so and see if she can clear it up and wear open toed shoes when at home.

For all those critical of the homeless:

Prior to the Great Recession, Adkins owned and ran a successful plant nursery in Moab, Utah. At its peak, it was grossing $300,000 a year. She had never before been unemployed – she'd worked for 40 years, through three major recessions. During her first year of unemployment, in 2010, she wrote three or four cover letters a day, five days a week

758: Thank you for posting the correct info. It just shows what these odd "Did anyone see/hear" or "I suddenly think I'm a detective & I'm going to post my assumptions as fact!" stories people are posted aren't always exactly something that should have gone public in the first place. Sorry the woman your pups went to say hi to freaked (and luckily she didn't hurt your or your mom's dog!). I would have knelt down to say hi & get some puppy lovin' once I realized they were curious.

Hardworking? Hardly. Also, if I had 100 plus properties...well, I wouldn't. Because nobody can effectively manage that many without stuff happening that is unethical or unsavory, which is all stuff he's been accused of in the past.

Also, accusations that are on record aren't slander. Slander is completely different, look it up!

We need a leader, not a follower. All the middle to lower rank people don't really see the fog thru the forest.

Peer pressure prevails in Santa Barbara.

Those that provide continue to spend less than 50% of their time here. Soak it up and come to understand the circumstances. Homeless rule. Successful people are leaving.

Let's not assume that just because he has worked hard to amass his empire that he is not a slumlord.

I DIDN'T rent from him when the apt I looked at for possible residence, as a single young woman in college and working full time, was riddled with cockroaches! I walked around the complex and saw cockroaches on walls, in windows, on front doors! It was disgusting!

When I asked the manager about the roaches, he shrugged his shoulders and just grunted something about if I didn't rent it, someone else would!

I looked at another apt in another complex and was amazed by the peeling paint and the filthy carpets. That manager told me they didn't paint between tenants nor did they clean the carpets! He went so far as to tell me that I could always go to the grocery store and rent a machine if I wanted the carpets cleaned!

So, who do you think owned both of these apt buildings? Yep, you figured it out! Mr. Dario Pini. I'm sorry, but he has been held accountable for these horrific living conditions. This is all fact that came out in court.

Hard working does not automatically make you a nice guy.

717 - whatever it is in the backyard, digs in the pots (tomatoes, cukes) and in the raised beds (zucchini) and has eaten the lettuce; I assume it's possoms because I did last summer see them and I know that they are interested in worms. If it's not possoms, what would it be? There were rats and there still are a few, Lenz killed most, but I don't think they dig and also eat lettuce or do they? As for fruit, there is an apricot tree, dropping fruit.
