Chick-fil-A

2013-02-21 12:11 AM

With all the great--and independent or family owned joints--in town, I'd rather skip the chain that is also in hundreds of other cities. Plus, do you want revenue spent in local stores or being sent out of state? All other issues aside, locally owned stores that get patronized by us keep all their money local. That benefits, us, our kids, parks and everything else. That is worth patronizing the right places to me. A chicken sandwich will always lose out to a fish taco or Sojburger for me!!

I'll never know how good or bad the 'food' is there, I stopped eating at fastfood joints like Mcky-D's, Carl's Jr., Burger King, In-And-Out Burger and Taco Bell years ago. However, the wife and I do have an occasional turkey burger at The Habit once in a while. I like the downtown location better then the La Cumbre location.

Chick-fil-A

Poor chickens. Far too many people choose to ignore the fact that these sentient beings suffer the torments of the damned, crammed together in small cages, forced to inhale their own fecal matter, as they live immersed in their own stench. (Go to YouTube and watch "Food, Inc.")

Yes. Go ahead and gobble up your anti-biotic filled and stressed out meat. Then wonder why you have so many health problems. Fast food is the fast track to deteriorating health.

And I'm not surprised the line to get into this place is so long. Coupons for free meals? Once "the Santa Barbara welcome" is over, I bet this latest franchise Chick-fil-A lasts two years, at most.

I don't care if their chicken tastes like sweet velvet and they are giving away free bunnies...if there is a long line for the drive thru I'm going elsewhere.

My stomach has been a little turned off to chicken after having raw chicken put on my Habit chicken salad and getting a very undercooked Carl's chicken sandwich. Nothing makes me verp my morning coffee quite like the thought of lukewarm salmonella swimming in my colon.

Santa Barbara's Chief Executive, Ch...

2013-02-21 06:29 AM

The County CEO should be someone who shares the values and the reality of SB County. Mike Brown, now of COLAB, certainly did not share the values of the majority of voters in SB. He and his crony Andy Caldwell are more Tea Party than pro-SB County. Anti-government and anti- regulation. And I guess Ms. Waller didn't reflect SB values much either. I like the idea of promoting from within. Maybe that person could start at a more reasonable salary which should also reflect our values and our fiscal reality.

Puppy Shipping

2013-02-21 06:31 AM

My daughter had a standard poodle puppy shipped to LA from Canada, and "Lulu" seems to be doing fine, and does like her crate-although she has a bigger crate now. My daughter had met other people who had gotten puppies from this breeder. I offered to pick up the puppy, as shipping was $350, and thought that it would not be that much more expensive to pick her up, and less traumatic, but they decided to ship her on her own. The flight was less time, and the puppy was between 5 and 6 pounds. I know that some breeders demand that you pick the puppies up, and/or will only ship them @ certain times of the year.

Puppy Shipping

2013-02-21 06:35 AM

My sister has purchased from random breeders (pugs, French bulldog) around the country, as she too prefers purebred puppies. She's had good luck, but the Frenchie and 1 pug came with varying degrees of health issues. Probably the luck of the draw. Over the past nearly 16 years, I've had 3 dogs, all from shelters/rescues. Our 1st from SB Shelter was a 1 year old Aussie Shep, saddled with a few emotional issues. We worked them out; he was wonderful. He recently passed at 15 years old. Our other two are German Sheps from Westside Germ Shep Rescue (one was 7 mos at adoption; other 2 years). All have been excellent dogs. Affectionate and grateful the whole time. I'm talking about me on this latter point.

Puppy Shipping

2013-02-21 07:35 AM

A couple years ago, I was looking for a chihuahua puppy and fell for a cute face in an email sent by a breeder several states away. The puppy was 8-9 weeks and 3-4 lbs, shipped cargo. Plane was delayed due to winter weather so flight ended up 8 hours, it waited in a cold shipping dock kind of environment, and it had health problems not disclosed by the breeder (hernia/parasites).

When we brought it to our vet, they said that a breeder willing to cargo ship a puppy that young isn't one who's looking out for the well-being or health of her dogs. The puppy ended up having such severe psychological problems we had to give it away.

We did some research on the breeder herself after this ordeal and found that she had an arrest record for "intent to defraud" and a lawsuit currently against her for the death of a puppy in her care.

P.S. This breeder said that she shipped via heated cargo but when I called the airline she was going to use I learned it was unheated.

Montecito Reality Show

2013-02-21 07:40 AM

First of all, this is embarrassing. The aim of these shows is to highlight the worst in people and their situations so the viewers can feel morally superior. ("Look, they have money and prestige, but they are really all just skanks. Upon reflection we (the viewers) are really better and more moral people").

So, all of us in this area will, by extension, become caricatures, and so will our children. If you think that this will be good for you and your family, then you are in luck, I guess! Since a lot of people do crave attention at all costs and any costs (the named "society columnist" being one), I am sure that many will find this thrilling.

Regarding those "leading lady" media seekers who CRAVE attention, we can predict that they will eventually regret their decision to participate as they eventually see themselves and their families reduced to cartoon buffoons. As mothers, they should weigh the short-term thrill of their exhibitionism against the consequences this can have on their marriages and, most importantly, on their children. Anyone remember the Loud family and their wistful regrets?

Chick-fil-A

2013-02-21 07:44 AM

Consider the nutrition. Check out their menu planner and nutrition and ingredient statements and learn how a single meal there will cost you:
1. 75% of total daily calories. You might need a new wardrobe pretty soon.
2 80% of sodium --- big deal if you have even borderline hypertension
3. 90% of total fat, 90% sat fat---so don’t eat another thing the rest of the day.
5. 50% of total cholesterol. Can you feel your arteries close up?
Not to mention the stuff is LOADED with MSG, artificial colors, TBQH/calcium propionate/sodium benzoate/potasium sorbate/polysorbate (preservatives) artificial flavors, dimethlypolysiloxane anti-foaming agent. That’s just the BASIC chicken sandwich!

But it’s nice that they’re closed on Sundays so the workers can be with their friends and family. That IS a good example to set. But the food? It should come with a health insurance voucher.

I don't eat in any of them anymore because I do not know enough about the politics, religion and socio-ethnic backround, etc. of all the employees, managers, stockholders and owners regardless of the quality of the food and services in them. I am a politically correct liberal/progressive and I know what counts when it comes to restaurants!

Beached Boats

2013-02-21 08:42 AM

There once was a little boat. It had powerful engines but here on the shore the engines were of no use. Why was I left here, sighed the little boat? Why did they run off and leave me alone? I wish I had never come to this spot. I wish they had never brought me here. I wish my name wasn't Panga. Maybe my life would have been different if my name had been Bayliner or something like that.

The end.

Santa Barbara's Chief Executive, Ch...

2013-02-21 08:56 AM

This same switch happened in the 1980's when CEO Larry Parrish (then a modest Administrative Officer title) left after 10 years at the County, 5 as probation head and 5 as AO, to go to the big OC. He later ended up at Riverside (?) County.

Since 1980 or so we have had Larry Parrish (outsider) Dave Elbaum (outsider), Chuck Wagner (the only local, former head of County Public Works, 3 years as AO), Mike Brown (outsider), and now Ms. Waller (outsider).

Would be nice to have more of us local yokels get promoted to a department head positions like this at the County. There are a lot of talented people working there who are routinely overlooked for promotion to top jobs while outsiders come with no knowledge of the area.

Interesting how much turmoil this is causing everyone.

Not everyone can go to the Beachside or endulge in local places..especially at "local" prices. There are so many snobbish people in this town (and yes I was born and raised here) that it's no wonder we have so much complaining. If you don't want to eat there don't if you do then try it out. The pharmasist has to have a certain liscense to give you the shot.

Did you think they would all just disappear when they signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo?

The time for lamenting ancient history and historic injustice, visited upon or committed by anyone, is long past. It was the Sapnish first, then the Mexicans who subjegated the native people in California long before the Californians arrived. Much of what these present day "Indians" claim was "genocide" was nothing but the ravages of communicable diseases that no one knew much about, let alone how it was transmitted or how to cure it. Whether bad things happened to people centuries ago is not something that should be used to parley special status and benefits today using a "guilt trip" or "sympathy card" by those who never had anything bad done to them or to hold historic injustices that may have occurred against the millions of people today that never did anything bad to anyone.

Edhat is a great source, but sometimes I laugh at the responses of admitted non-experts because they so often vary widely. Anyway, 088's tip to dig outside the root zone to see how the soil looks sounds like your best bet, unless you want to contact a plant/palm person. But there are other palm plants nearby that don't look as bad...yes, they are burned looking but not to this degree so far. I'm still not sure what to do. It wasn't in a spot where the lanes merge. It was south bound just before the Patterson exit. But I agree with you on the aggressive driving. And people who think speeding and cutting people off is the thing to do. Sad for those involved because I am sure it's a mess.

Palm Plant Help

Some plants within same genus fare better than others with extreme temps. My one Brugmansia is looking a little stressed, thanks to the frost, while the other looks like it is ready to call it quits.

This is due to low temperatures. Call Island Seed & Feed or some local palm grower and ask what supplements you can feed these stressed out palms. I don't know about the iron. Call first.

Palm Plant Help

2013-02-21 12:33 PM

First order of business is to prune off the completely brown spears. I would clip off other brown bits, but make sure to leave all the green. The green is necessary for photosynthesis.

Most sites recommend that you then spray with copper fungicide. I personally avoid using any material that ends in "cide," as this means you would be using something deadly and harmful to the environment.

I agree with 118P, call Island Seed at 967-5262 or email: islandseed@earthlink.net and ask their advice. They know how to fix this organically and keep you and your plant healthy. (Make sure you talk with Matt or Brant, if you call.)

I called 911 the first few times, only to find out the police rarely respond to those calls. In fact I called back to follow-up and was told "it's probably fireworks". I explained I was very familiar with guns, and know the difference in the sounds of guns and fireworks. Not really counting much on police assistance these days. A guy in Ventura I know recently left his job at the County for one that took less knowledge because he could get a 10K pay increase. And look forward to a 25% higher pension based on the pension calculators they make available.

Possible Gun Shots

What exactly are you expecting the police to do in response to a report of gunshots heard from Modoc to Mission? Canvas each homeowner in that area?

If you can't report something like "shots fired from the 1100 block of Hacienda at midnight" or something pretty specific then you are sending them on a wild goose chase and they will go on calls where they have a chance of catching the criminal.

Certainly they will log your call and the beat cop should review it to see if there is a pattern that they can identify and pursue. That is the usefulness of calling.

Maybe someday they will have surveillance satellites or drones everywhere and you will be able to access the realtime footage to see if you can spot the muzzle flashes. Otherwise just read the 2nd amendment and hope that the gunshots were from a well-regulated militia member.

Puppy Shipping

2013-02-21 02:48 PM

I brought in my current two dogs as pups from Ireland, and it was pretty much the same price for me to go over, pick out the two pups I wanted, and fly them back in a sky kennel crate as it would have been to have shipped them alone. That way I could go, pick out the dogs that looked best and responded best to me, and then return with them in the crate I flew over with. For this breed the American bred dogs typically live to 7, and Irish to 10-11. The American bred are a small gene pool that is inbred, duplicating medical issues, and once I had seen the Irish dogs in action I knew that it was going to be worth it to me to bring them back. Based on what I know of the purebred dog world I will say I think it is VITAL that you meet the parent dogs, see the breeder's facility, and pick out the pup from the litter that matches your level of energy and personality. I thoroughly endorse the science of creating purebred dogs. I know that I have a preferred breed, and they have a certain personality and type that meshes with mine. If anyone else wants to rescue a pit mix or a chi mix, go for it. I don't want one of them in my life, and my having my dogs neither creates nor destroys those other breeds.

2013-02-21 04:26 PM

Whether this man died from a purposeful suicide, an accident or an intoxicated incident, I feel like we really need to be respectful of the fact that this sort of thing can happen to ANYONE in our lives. Obviously, this man had people in his life who loved him.

It is easy for some people here to make comments about the character of someone who is not here to defend themselves or set the record straight. I know a lot of people here were quick to make outrageous claims about this death when it was first mentioned here. Maybe now people will take a step back and have some respect? I know that's asking a lot from this crowd.

Chromatic Gate Update

2013-02-21 04:27 PM

My two thoughts......

1. I don't care where the money came to pay for this...the city is getting ripped off. The charge to prime and paint this beast is almost $100 per square foot. Every painting contractor in Santa Barbara would trip over themselves running to get this job for much less than half that price.

2. The mayor says "At long last, the Santa Barbara community and visitors will soon be able to enjoy the Chromatic Gate in its full colorful glory...". Except when you are standing there looking at it, clearly visible in the background, sitting on the benches, are a half dozen pee-soaked drunk vagrants with shopping carts in tow drinking malt liquor out of a paper bag. All in their "full, colorful glory".

To 589 and 591 - you knew what was coming! And 608, excellent points. To those who provided judgmental opinions: for crying out loud, find a hobby. To assume that everyone except you is ill-intentioned and ill-informed is the hallmark of a poor character and a petty mind. For everyone's edification, I have thoroughly checked out the seller. She has had a sterling reputation as a breeder for almost 20 years and does not run a puppy mill. I want a specific hybrid puppy that is not available in California, or I would get one here. There aren't any of this particular breed in need of rescue. So rather than jump in with your preconceived judgments, how about either addressing the specific question at hand or.... oh yeah..... finding a hobby?

Don't do it. As a former dog rescuer the number of sick and geneticly predisposed to big problems that came from Midwest breeders was horrible. In addition to that the pup is too young and fragile for a trip like that. Think of a toddler-without his mom for the first time in such a stressful trip. Seek out a reputable breeder nearer to home so you and the pup can start out in an optimum way.

Whatever it costs get the shot! It is worth it to prevent or reduce the effects of shingles and the possible after effects. My husband had shingles 5 or 6 years ago and has had persistant and devastating "postherpatic pain" from the nerve damage. It changed our lives dramaticly. We do not enjoy life as we did before and our activities are limited. I know it is a little complicated and/or expensive but do it anyway.

Child Molester Surrenders at LAX

2013-02-21 08:49 PM

His wife, his daughter and the Carpinteria Congregation all knew of the abuse but failed to contact authorities. When one estranged parent learned of the abuse 8 months later(victim had become distraught that nothing was being done) law enforcement was immediately contacted and the police investigation began February 2012.
During that time, Norris "disassociated" himself from the Jehovahs Witness Organization via personal letter through the Quepos Congregation. He also separated from his wife. Quepos Elders were at that time aware of the abuse allegations but they too failed to contact authorities. Norris attempted to divert attention from the Jehovahs Witnesses Organization and their culpability for years of allowing him to function unabated as a molester while an Elder in the Carpinteria Congregation. This of course is and was a failed strategy.

Do You Doggie Daycare?

2013-02-21 09:23 PM

Camp Canine is the best doggie day care I've ever encountered. Yeah, it's a tad pricey, but it's worth every nickel. My Huskies love Camp Canine and the great staff there. Dogs are segregated by size and temperament, so doggie confrontations are kept to an absolute minimum. With its log structures and hidey-holes, it's like Frontierland for dogs. Absolutely five stars.

Do You Doggie Daycare?

I put my dog at Camp Canine when I had to go out of town for 5 days, it was a great experience she came back more confident and mature somehow ... It wasn't daycare exactly but I have been very happy with my experiences with them.

Do You Doggie Daycare?

We have used both Dioji and Camp Canine over the past eight years, and Dioji is by far the superior place to leave your dog. Both the downtown and Goleta branches of Dioji have room to run, bone shaped swimming pools and much more attentive staff. If you are planning to board your dog, Camp Canine will crate them overnight whether they are used to being caged or not. Dioji has an airconditioned sleeping area with a bed and human who spends the night with the dogs. They can snuggle in the bed or on one of the several futons surrounding it. There's really no comparison.

Do You Doggie Daycare?

Camp Canine Hands Down ! I had my dog at Diogi for 6 months and then had 2 negative experiences there and tried Camp Canine. I and my dog are so much happier there. Diogi is not a bad place and frankly the hours there are a bit better but the employees and owners for sure at Camp Canine are experts in dog Care, training and advice. Camp Canine has been so accommodating and flexible with me. I cannot say enough good things about them. Dont hesitate trusting your dog to Camp Canine !

Do You Doggie Daycare?

Be advised it is really important that you choose a place that assigns your dog to a group with dogs with similar play style, temperament and energy level. The ones suggested so far are pretty reputable and careful with this, but it can't be overstated how damaging it is for a dog to be confined with dogs with whom they are incompatible. Stress, aggression, and changes in personality can result. Good luck, sounds like you are a very thoughtful and conscientious guardian!

Do You Doggie Daycare?

2013-02-21 10:39 PM

It has been several years, but I used to board my dog with Camp Canine when I would go out of town. She always seemed happy to walk up the steps and go inside the door when we arrived, and I liked that they separated the dogs based on personality. My girl was with the "gentle play group". She was sensitive being who tended to get sick whenever I would be away until I started taking her to Camp Canine. I have no idea what they are like now, but I hope they are still as good.
