Maybe someday soon we will get curbside kitchen scraps recycling/for compost. That would be a great help. Then people could stop using "I need plastic bags for my trash" as an excuse not to take their own bags to the store.

This was clearly a dog attack. However, I have witnessed personally many incidents wherein people who know little about dog behavior will label play or dominance as being "an attack." I once had a woman tell me her dog was "attacked" when all the other dog did was to lay its foreleg over the top of her dog! Many, many dog owners end up in the ER as a result of attempting to break up a dog fight. I am really happy that this particular incident resulted in no human injury. There is no question that the "laughing" dog owner should be sued to cover any vet exam or care needed for the bitten dog. Too bad the owner's (of victimized dog) pain and suffering won't be factored in. I highly doubt that this male dog owner would have been so cavalier if the victimized dog had had a male owner. Men, I have noticed, are often terrible bullies and tend to discount/disregard women in such situations. What goes around, comes around. This bad owner will not have a happy life, as, obviously, he is working hard to be inconsiderate, uncaring and deserving of his bad karma. As a dog owner for over 50 years, I extend many apologies on behalf of those of us who work hard to keep our dogs obedient and well-behaved. What a shame this man's bad behavior reflects on us all.

United usually has a weekend efare to San Francisco for 160 RT (travel Sat return Mon or Tues) You also might check out the flyertalk.com forum they have a section where they post deals, while not unique to Santa Barbara I've routed in from here on some good cross country ones. SBA is usually a premium on those of $100 or so but when I consider gas and headache of LAX it still feels like a discount.

I have been using the Jumpmath workbooks with my daughters ever since I read an article on their math program in the NY Times ( google it) a couple of years ago. I love their teaching method and although my girls don't jump for joy (weak attempt, I know...sorry) at my insistence of doing their Jumpmath pages they are both proud of being top math students at school. I have scoured Bennets and the internets for other math learning materials and not come up with anything that comes close. I am a true believer. I know little of kumon other than what I've read online...that is increadibly boring and joyless. If you would like to discuss further feel free to give a call. 805 705-0445

Math requires an understanding and love of logic. Teach and instill that; and math becomes enjoyable. Art requires an understanding and love of aesthetics,....etc. I have a relative who says that kimono has helped her daughter tremendously with all aspects of school. I remember that the best education I ever received was in an all boys Episcopal school back East. They taught discipline and how to learn and study, not specific facts to memorize. That having been said, memorization of fundamentals of math until you no longer even need to think about them is absolutely necessary to advance in mathematics.

When I woke up, the guy let me know, in a gentle way, that I had been passing gas the whole time I'd been sleeping. He had managed to open his car window for some fresh air without waking me. Upon further inspection I notice that the bear is either from a thrift store or garage sale because it is definitely not new. Takes me to... Olive Garden, wearing a teal windbreaker circa 1990 and a t-shirt with "JESUS" in big gold letters. We enjoy dinner next to some single mothers and their screaming children. Date takes out debit card and I get a peak at it before he hands it to the server. My date's last name isn't really what he told me it was, turns it out it was... Boner. True story.

That's actually not what it's about. He had no prior records. Sometimes good people do stupid things. I think he showed remorse, had a history of not being a Loser and the right thing happened here. I had a wobbler when I was 20, had no prior issues, just a stupid drunken mistake when I was young. They did the same thing for me and I'm far from rich.. So it's not about the money. It doesn't excuse what he did, but facts show he has tried to make it right by taking responsibility for his actions.

The jacket doesn't ring a bell. Please look at his photos on facebook if you think you have seen him. Also, he probably hasn't shaved for at least 2-3 weeks. His hair would still be fairly short. Rebecca, this must be so painful for you. Please be aware that for years I have seen a 6'6, slender, clean shaven man who could meet your husband's description. I see him downtown. I hope people remembering that they saw someone meeting your husband's description are not having mistaken sightings of our local SB man. If your husband was not schizophrenic before this age, it's very unlikely that that he developed it. More likely is a meth binge accompanied by not sleeping for many nights caused an acute, self-limited psychotic break that would resolve after some resstorative sleep. I was an ER doctor for years so am not judging; just giving a plausable explanation for what might have caused this. Contact Officer WoJo (long polish last name but he goes by Wojo who may at least know the name of the tall local SB man so that doesn't interfere with sightings of Jason.

Thank you for the information. Jason was being really manic for the last two weeks. Prior to that, he had never had a manic episode, just some very bad seasonal depression. I can guarantee that Jason is not on meth. Jason is very against taking any type of man-made chemical. He won't even take aspirin. Jason has been a vegetarian for over 10 years and recently became vegan. That being said, he does have a medical marijuana card and was eating marijuana cookies because he was convinced it would help stabilize his mood. Over the last weeks he stopped eating the cookies and became very manic and stopped sleeping. There was evidence that he consumed mushrooms right before he entered the park on Feb 2nd. I found a ton of writings about finding himself and religion in his truck. I think “he thought” he could somehow reset his brain. If this other tall man is the person that people are seeing, that probably means Jason is still in the park in Sonoma. The really bad part is that he was seen without clothing at 5pm on Feb 2nd. The nights have been in the mid to upper 30s in that area. If he didn’t walk out of the park area and find shelter, I believe the outcome could be very bad. However, please keep looking. If there was any way that Jason could have made it to Santa Barbara, I am certain that is where he would go. A week before he disappeared he helped a homeless man get food and convinced him to ride a bus to Santa Barbara. Jason thought that the area was the most wonderful place he had ever been. I pray we find him this weekend. Rebecca

Rebecca, I pray that you are able to find your husband quickly and get him the help that he needs. Your story is heartbreaking and Jason sounds like a individual who has a really good heart but he is just lost and needs medical care. I will keep you in my prayers and I will keep my eyes out for him. Just so that you know Santa Barbara is quote a distance from Sonoma so unless you are aware that he had some money for the bus I would be sure to keep posting on other sites in other counties as well. I am sure that you have already done this but I wish you the best in your search. I hope he comes home to you soon.

Criminals won't have a chance! It's hard to run when you're laughing at what's chasing you... Serious question, why can't the Police walk in high profile areas? If you are chasing a criminal through a crowd, you must be faster on foot, than trying to not hit someone on a trikke. And if mobility around the area is an issue, put them on bikes... and not $4k bikes!

Generally they are used in the BC as trail markers. In my opinon, they do not belong at the beach, and I do not like them. I think they take away from the natural beauty of the beach, to have human created rock stackings, or Cairns everywhere. Would/Do I go out of my way to knock them down...no. Do I wish people would show more respect for nature and not create these...yes.

A friend just told me about this - how sad. Just yesterday a group of us were out surfing & we were talking about folks who behave badly in the water. Our instructor Chris Keet said something really profound: "Everybody goes out into the water looking for something." He then went on to explain that people who go out angry and hostile don't even know what they're looking for ... so they'll never find it. It sounds like these ladies you encountered are the land-locked equivalent of angry surfers. They must have lost something important in their souls to willfully dismantle someone else's expression of joy - something that delights so many. Maybe they were hoping for exactly the kind of conflict they created with you to ease some inside ache. Who knows? I'm sorry for them. But so happy and grateful that we got to enjoy those wonderfully whimsical little artworks for a little while & confident they'll show up again, somehow. Have a great day!

Gift Card Payback |
2013-02-15 11:21 AM |
|
From a sales associate: If you used gift cards such as an Amex gift card or Visa gift card (as opposed to a direct Best Buy gift card) these gift cards are treated by retailers as a credit card. Unfortunately, the same rules apply to these credit gift cards as do personal credit cards, and sales associates/ managers can only refund the amount back onto the cards used. This is why I ALWAYS told customers to hold onto the empty cards until they were sure they would not be returning. Otherwise, a retailer can only offer store credit. People using credit cards often think the amount can be refunded through cash, or onto a different card. When returning an item purchased with credit you should ALWAYS have the card with you that you used. Some retailers don't need to swipe the card to put the amount back on it, but some do. Save yourself and the sales associates a headache and always keep your empty cards! At least for a week or two. Better safe than sorry! (and pissed off....)

Are we still governed by the constitution? Or have we become a dictatorship? The defendant did very very bad things. He was caught. He was arrested and jailed. He went to court. He was found guilty. He was punished for a fixed amount of time. He was to be released at the end of his punishment. Then our District Attorney attempts to block his release back into Santa Barbara county. So far so good. But now, the District Attorney states that she has successfully blocked his release for 20 months. So, was the legal system used only to delay his release? It seems so according to this press release. But he served his time. And something just doesn't sit right with that. The Court sentenced him to a fixed term and after the fact the DA decides that isn't long enough so she takes it upon herself to lenghten the time he serves. This is where her actions deviate from the consitution and the constitutional safeguards that we have in place. It is not her duty now to determine what the lenght of sentence should have been. It was the trial court's decision to make. And they made it. To attempt to change that now is the act of a dictator that does respect our constitution.

This story makes my blood boil. I don't own dogs, though I do love them and would have one if I could. I think, after reading this account, that as a dog owner, one should take a defensive stance when taking one's dog out and carry a big walking stick and pepper spray for the (hopeful) prevention of/defense against this kind of thing. Geez, this is really sad. Human thugs roam the streets downtown and canine thugs roam the beaches and trails. It's a sad commentary on the state of civilization.

I prefer that people not build structures on the beach and then leave them for the next storm to clear. A beach should be treated like a camp site - use it then it as found or cleaner with minimal evidence of one's presence so the next user has a fresh experience. The need to leave either a 'Kilroy was here' marker or a spiritual offering is as selfish as graffiti. Cairns and beach huts are not natural, and the joy of the beaches is that they provide an escape from manicured, constructed, edged, planted, and over-peopled urban environments. Good on the two women for restoration work.

You probably mean the asteroid. A meteor ("shooting star") is a quick streak (or longer like the "fireball" yesterday in Russia) through our sky that is viewable as it strikes our upper atmosphere at a high rate of speed and burns up because of friction with the air. Sometimes the meteor is large enough that it doesn't disintegrate completely and hits the earth as a "meteorite." The asteroid is a chunk, usually of rock, that has a long orbit around our solar system. To answer your question - no the asteriod that will be passing by will be both too small and too far away to be seen with the naked eye. However, we'll probably enjoy stunning views of the "near-miss" courtesy of NASA. Stay tuned...

74, right on! I am for giving people a break (no pun intended) and second chances, but he did not scrape someone up, or get in a fender bender. He punched someone HARD and he is a football player who probably works out at a gym constantly. That is brutal force by definition. We have become so lenient and made obvious assaultive and violent behavior nothing more than a sneeze or cough. To save money? Too make prisons less crowded? Whatever. If you are the one on the receiving end (again, no pun intended) of violence it stays with your for life. Unlike his punishment.

It's not that we've become lenient, per se. It's more that we place such a high value on athletes/musicians/actors (see also: celebrities) that we are willing to absolve them of real judgment for their crimes because then someone somewhere would get sad because their team wouldn't get to the Super Bowl/their favorite musician wouldn't win a Grammy/their favorite actor wouldn't get an Oscar. It's shameful, and a reflection of how messed up our values have become that we place fame over responsibility.

Wow one of the best restrurants in town. have a great story about going there. I had reservations there to eat in the 60's when pants suits were becoming the rage, went in and was pleasantly told no pants allowed for women, so I trotted to the ladies room took of my pants and walked back out with a short dress on. The mater de didn't even blink his eye but sat us right away. Boy times have changed! Loved the food and became good friends with the owners. great memories of wonderful times.

Not totally engaged by the thrill of a investigative unit where its board seems to be extremely light on journalism experience and more local activists. Every now and then Noozhawk and the Independent actually seem to do good in depth articles why didn't they just grease existing wheels. I've seen a couple of good units operating around the country and like ProPublica they had a board based in journalism not community activism or public access tv.

The price of the fence/gate is about 4 times too high. Ditto with the scooters. We're broke. The cops shouldn't have to protect their parking lot from people walking through it. Government is here to serve us, not the other way around. If you look at secured federal buildings, large arms and ammo purchases by the government (while trying to restrict what citizens can buy), ridiculous expenditures from DHS all over the country for armored vehicles, spy drones, etc. -- with NOTHING being done for normal middle class working (or not) people -- combined with financial industry cronies being too big to jail -- rational minds do tend to start questioning motivations and entertaining conspiracy theories. The stench of corruption and the evidence of government inefficiency &/or insanity is becoming overwhelming.

We were at the beach near San Ysidro one time and my nephew knocked over a stack of rocks. Apparently the guy who built it was only a few steps away and he got angry. Frankly I thought the guy was being a little immature-- if you're going to get pissed when someone knocks over your pile of rocks, you might as well stand next to it so everyone knows you're serious. Absurd. I agree that the joy is in the building, not in the maintaining. I saw a video recently of a dude who professionally builds amazing stacks of rocks and even he would knock them down at the drop of a hat.

OP Here, I often build these too and call them rock mandalas as they are less permanent than a sand mandalas. It is an interesting measure of people in that some destroy, some admire, and some build more; and it has nothing to do with age. It seems more to do with disposition and happiness. I'm sorry people feel this is a human intrusion into their natural experience, and I would like for them to know that the 1/2 ton of trash I personally remove from Hendrys every year is not part of their natural experience either. We beach-goers keep this beach very clean with daily patrols. Thanks everyone for picking up after your pets and the pets of others!

They should do that at the university. Tired of people advancing their friends. While they're at it, they need to provide some management training to faculty and some of the staff who have been in positions long term, but don't know what they're doing or abuse their authority. Also, more training for managers on how to deal with harassment in the office. It's crazy lame.

In Hawaii people are discouraged from rearranging nature for any reason, it is considered disrespectful to the land. I personally would not knock down rocks at the beach, I also would not destroy a sand sculpture or step on a child's sand castle on purpose, that behavior seems a bit mean spirited to me.

My only comment is that some years ago a similar incident happened to us. Our dog, and elderly female, was ripped open down her shoulder about 6". We had to take her to the 24/7 vet over by then-Longs on upper State and have her stitched. She had to have tubes to drain the wounds, and take antibiotics. The owner of the unleashed dog literally ran off with his dog, refusing to respond to my husband's shouts for help - he was too occupied with our dog to pursue, and he never saw the man and his dog, a large shepherd type, again. We were stunned by the event, and in time, we recovered. We still take our little dog to Hendry's and Wilcox, and let her run around. I am occasionally made nervous by a large, free-roaming dog, but still go to those places myself. I was also severely bitten as a child, by a chained guard dog I foolishly (being very young) pet. I don't know what the moral of these stories is. I am glad we have dog parks. Maybe: Please be responsible, people. Remember the Golden Rule.

I personally commend Ms. Dudley on her wise decision and determination to keep this MONSTER off our streets. If any of you are parents think how you would feel if what happened to that poor young girl in the bowling alley ended up happening to your daughter because they let a TWICE convicted VIOLENTsexual predator loose on the streets. HE did the time not once but twice and I doubt that he will ever learn the lesson. Some people are beyond rehabilitation, some conditions even medication can't help. Violent sexual crimes against children of any age is wrong! . I urge you to read the story from the Auburn journal before defending the fact that this guy should be let loose on our streets. And yes I do believe in democracy.... I just believe that some people on this earth are not worhty of living in a democratic society .

These are the strangest comments I've ever seen on Edhat. Based on them, I'm glad the police got a gate for their lot, and they might want to think about bulletproof glass for their offices, too. As much as we don't mind increasing cop salaries and pensions, we have refused to give them a decent building to work in. Even Santa Maria did that for their force.

I wouldn't take down the rocks myself, but I wouldn't want my smallish dogs to get crushed by them either. The beach changes daily. Nature makes sure of that. There is a target in Camarillo, as well. I liked this one, but haven't been in years, so I can't compare. The outdoor section of the Main St Target didn't change much - it was only the back-left portion (which is seasonal/outdoor/patio type stuff now) & the outdoor part (now closed) that went away. I miss the garden section, but it's not like they lost all that space to groceries - they just lost most of the gardening stuff. The clothing, shoe & home good sections remained generally untouched. The Target in the mall is enormous, and probably your best shot, unless you check out the super Target 783 mentioned.

Install security cameras. Install remote motion sensors at the walls, and when they alert you call the police whom will then arrest the people and get the video for further evidence. You can do all this for less than $500 and you will save paint, time, and help SB.

I don't know if Billy the Gardner would approve, but I'm thinking Bougainvillea. It's not picky about water so you wouldn't have to do more than hit it with a garden hose now and then. It tolerates crappy soil, although you have to worry about the train folks spraying RoundUp, so you might want to consult with them about that. Bougie can climb and grow 30 or more feet tall. Check some nurseries for recommended varieties, etc. Consider what direction the wall faces and how much sun it gets. Good luck!

I like the motion sprinklers - I know they make them to discourage deer from eating gardens. I'm thinking something these delinquints don't want to step in ... dog excrement was my first thought, then something tarry/sticky.

The Camarillo store, the TO store and the Main Street store are very similar in my opinion. I think that is kind of the point though. If you blindfolded me and put inside any of them I wouldn't know which it was. They all have completed the grocery addition remodel in the last year.

Apprently the laws are made to be enfoced and that is what the police are supposed to do enforce da law. I hear all this scrap about the ACLU Suing and the police can't do much but I hear them on the scanner doing things..so 734 Are you saying the police can't do anything? I'm starting to think we have a police department to keep the citizen in line. Everyone else gets to PARTY and Raise HELL but SNOT the citizen. Shakey I remember when they had an old fart undercover fella at the bus stop down the street with 10 or so grand on him trying to lure long hairs into robbing him. This was when the casino first opened.. He showed me all that money I told him to take a cab home put it under his mattress and put it in the bank the next day..Funny

I like the spiky plant idea, and LOVE the idea about motion detector sprinklers (lights are good, too, but sprinklers are awesome!). Depending on how the taggers are getting to the wall, you can also try to come up with ideas to deter them even getting to the wall (again with the above ideas, but depending on the entrance, maybe just putting up some boards/fencing/etc could make it more of a PITA to get in?). Or just put buckets on the wall, and when the motion detector lights go on, push the buckets over. Fill the buckets with something other than water. Leftovers. Mud. Hot peppers soaking in water. Anything stinky (rotten eggs!). Or ice on really cold nights. Get creative! I know you'd have to hang out pretty late, but I think it might be worth it. :)

Plant creeping fig to cover the wall entirely.....Billy Goodnick won't approve, but I think it will solve your problem. Also prickly pear cactus in front of the wall should do the trick. I also like the idea of motion sprinklers, we used them to deter the deer on the Riviera from eating our plants and it worked well.

Why not make it a mural? Or repaint it with some sort of pattern? Get some kids involved! When you cover the wall in a solid color, you're simply providing a new blank canvas each time you repaint.

LOL! I like the "Polly-Anna" prespective of " paint a mural, get the kids involved..." Yeah, taggers love to paint pretty murals! If you're in a condo association, all of you footing the bill for security lights and video is the way to go until the vines grow in. There is a security "mat" that when activated, notifies dispatch to send units.

Why do you think that people who like stacking rocks have any more right to stack them then people who like knocking them over? People often post random signs around the local parks for business services and garage sales, and I take them down because I don't like them. These random sign posters have no license from the city for posting them, so I need no permission to take them down.

You hit the nail on the head Roger... The cops are just there to keep the honest people honest. The vagrants who commit crimes, yes, sleeping, peeing and c#raping on the beaches and parks is against the law, as is illegal panhandling, drinking in public, loitering, etc. but the City Attorney is afraid to prosecute. It costs the city money in booking fees, costs the county to jail them and we are all STUCK with it. It is a problem that is shoved down our throats. BUT if Joe taxpayer breaks the law, you can bet that he/she WILL be prosecuted to the ends of the law as they have $$$$ to pay fines... Joe taxpayer will also pay for the half-way housing, social workers, medical costs for the criminals too. It's a great system!

Probably not a good idea to plant a board with nails. It could become an income generation device for lawyers. I like the idea of the motion sensors or security mat that trigger lights and cameras. Actually, with the night-vision stuff that's available you wouldn't need the lights. Then you wouldn't wake the neighborhood every time a cat, dog, possum, or racoon walked by.

Spikey plants are obvious (don't touch cactus - they are sharp! maybe I shouldn't tag here considering it will hurt!), hidden booby traps aren't obvious and they aren't exactly legal. And getting sued by the morons tagging your property would just be salt in the wounds. Stick to measures that make tagging a pain. Mural would be cool if they left it, but I'd feel bad if they ruined a mural.

How many people in the condo association? Can you get volunteers to take various night shifts (to catch, photograph, pepper spray? them?) The motion activated sprinkler works. Prickly plants works. (We planted a bougainvillea hedge ourselves, for a natural barbed wire fence that looks nice.) In less litigious areas, the 'bear boards' mentioned work. (A bear board is a sheet of wood with nails sticking up out of it. You put it under windows and doors that bears are visiting at night to effectively discourage them.) There's some good ideas here. Best of luck.

The one part of the SBMTD's budget that is soaring is the one part they can't control: the price of fuel. SBCC students are only paying an average of 76 cents a ride, when the cheapest adult fare (10 ride pass) is currently $1.15 cents a ride. It stands to reason that SBCC students ought to pay at least some additional fare given the subsidy they currently receive.

I shop weekly at the Oxnard store & for my simple needs in groceries, I consider the values superb compared with any supermarkets in the SB-Goleta-SYV zipcodes. Cleaning supplies, pet stuff, & toiletries are also unbeatable values. Leaves me a couple of bucks for a beer after work. A guy has to have priorities! Target's clothing, shoes, & wearable plunder do little for this "snappy dresser" (yeah right!) but electronics & the aforementioned weekly consumables are terrific values. And yes, I have a conscience; I just prefer prices that seem 30-50% cheaper than any Von's. Now I can't help but show unmitigated anger when I stroll thru local super-ripoff-markets. (Oh! The parking is much better than the Trader Joes stores.)

889, all SBCC students have to pay this bus fee whether or not they use the bus. If there are twenty thousand students paying the fee but less than half are taking the bus, I believe the MTD are already making out like bandits. Maybe if you're really interested in fairness, you could help get carpoolers, bike riders, skateboarders and the walkers to SBCC a refund on that bus fee.

While I have never had an interest in making these, I do find them thought-provoking. Who built them? Was it during a campfire and maybe a little partying? How long will they last? It's fun to think about. As one poster mentioned, they are at the bottom of my list of grievances at the beach. I am aggravated by the trash. Styrofoam, paint spray cans, hot sauce and ketchup packets, coffee cups and stirrers, plastic water bottles, and condoms. I've found all those things on a regular basis. But really, I'd rather not be aggravated at all, so I try to leave the place better than I found it and practice good habits.

Playing with rocks, sand and driftwood is part of going to the beach. It's not like it's the shore of a placid lake where whatever you do is going to stay. The tide will re-shuffle everything in very short order. Building anything sizable or digging is dangerous and harmful and is a separate story. I wouldn't support that. The "ladies" kicking the rocks over is really an ugly story. I would like to pooh pooh it and say it's probably made up. Unfortunately, I've seen my share of people of all stripes wearing blinders, oblivious, uncaring and snarlingly contemptuous of anything outside of their narrow view.

EDDIEKD and I are in complete agreement. The fishing line, the polystyrene/styrofoam, the spray paint cans . . . that trash is the eyesore, not to mention bad for marine life. This is what I love about Edhat. It is always so provoking, in every sense of the word. Whenever I have seen rocks stacked at the beach, it never bothered me. Instead, I have always felt a kind of awe that anyone would take the time and have the energy to create such ephemeral art. If it is art. I think it's just rocks that will soon be washed away. I wonder how I would have felt if I had seen those women knocking over the rock mandalas. Probably would have felt pity for them, that they had nothing better to do. It does make my heart tweak a bit when people are so angry and lash out for no reason. @721P: As for parents acting self-entitled about their kids----you would love what I have going on next door to me. There seems to be a new kind of parenting, not too widely practiced, I hope, wherein the kids can do no wrong. And yelling and screaming is not only accepted but encouraged. Who cares if the neighbors complain (repeatedly)? It's all about the kids. I had to laugh over the parent worried that his/her child would be hurt by tumbling rocks. What a world we live in, where now everyone else is to blame. How did this evolve, where now it is always someone else's fault? My dog won't have to worry about stacked rocks. He comes when he is called and I don't let him get himself into potentially dangerous situations. It's called being a responsible caretaker.

Boo hoo... More utopian wealth transfer programs failing. Duh. Why does the cost of the fares not cover the cost of the service?

Every night we have an empty bus drive through our neighborhood for 9-12. No fares, and the most polluting vehicle on the road? An empty bus. It's a diesel too, not a natural gas model. Just a waste.

Thanks for the super-store comments. I wasn't aware. It so happens we'll be in that area on Monday and I'm really looking forward to some shopping. I refuse to shop TJ's anymore and haven't been there in at least two years. Any of the locations that I've ever been to in this state has the most atrocious parking situations. It also seems to be a magnet for pretentious, birkenstock wearing male snowheads to look for the wimmen-folk. My looks are nothing to write home about and I don't wear rings but that doesn't mean I'm available or flattered. In disclosure, I've been a snowhead myself for a long time. Pot and kettle have met. Excuse the rant.

908: I think it's great to let people know when they've goofed up a word. (Wala. I'm going to be getting some mileage out of that one!) My favorite French mispronunciation occurred when I was 20 years old and on an extremely "hot" date. This was the 70s and people (it seems) were into griping about SB wannabes and pretentiousness even way back then. My date was going on and on and then said to me, "It is all a big fuh-cade." hahahaha. Naturally, I had to correct him. I didn't want him going through life mispronouncing such a critical and necessary word. We did have one more date, but that story is even more tragically amusing. As for plantings that would discourage taggers: Native rose and native gooseberry are two plants that would keep anyone, even the most dedicated miscreant, away from an area. They take a while to grow, but then need only rainwater. Problem is---they are so thorny, they are a bit of a bother to prune. Bougainvillea thorns don't hold a candle to the thorns on rose/gooseberry.

@903P The figure is: Total amount of revenue paid by SBCC students (Divided By) total number of trips by SBCC students. The result is that SBCC students pay 76 cents per ride. Example: SBCC students pay $10,000 per year. They use the bus 10000 times in one year. They pay $1 per trip. If they only used the bus 1000 times, then they would be paying $10 per trip. So the figure already includes the fact that not every SBCC student rides the bus.

Wireless trail/game cameras at the entry points. They use infrared LEDs for a "flash" so taggers won't see them go off. If they do get stolen, the images have already been stored remotely. They run a 2-3 hundred bucks. The trouble with video surveillance is that the image quality is usually very poor. Probably not good enough for an ID unless you spend a lot of money on the system. Game cameras take high resolution stills that capture a lot more detail. I find it very irritating (but not surprising) that the local government punishes crime victims with fines instead of going after the criminals. Lazy [self-censored]s.

I would go with the motion sensors and cameras. Anything that's going to cause injury to another, especially in light of it being spoken about publicly, is going to lead to future litigation. Honest, hard-working citizens are the easiest targets in our society. You're not going to be rewarded but demonized. One case in point is the homeowner who put broken glass on the top of his six foot high walls after being burgled several times. The crooks injured themselves, did not get arrested, and successfully sued the homeowner.

Bus fee = $26 multiplied by 20,000 SBCC students = $520,000.00. If 10,000 students use the MTD, there is a windfall of $260,0000.00 on the backs of SBCC students of which an enormous number use other alternate modes of transportation. Also, students who use their own vehicles are paying for a parking pass and still paying this bus fee. This is a community college. Talk of sticking it to the students is a bit unseemly when it appears that the MTD is the one who appears to be the party rolling in rose petals in this particular matter.

Here's the kicker that got me: "College students account for 15 percent of MTD’s ridership and that they pay $60 in student fees for a bus pass?—?a relative bargain at even twice the price." MTD should raise the price of that bus pass. Public transportation all year for $60? Why such a subsidized rate? the SBCC bus pass would be a bargain at $200! I mean, consider the alternative.....one would pay more than $60 just for a SBCC parking permit....or just a week's worth of gas......or just a month's worth of car insurance....not to mention the price of a car itself, registration, and maintenance.? Even a decent bicycle costs more than $60.

A Gov. store to buy what ever they need with there EBT cards so the money goes right back into the program and a clinic run by MediCal , again so the money goes back. Just a thought !!

But STRAY, why should I pay for that bus pass when I don't use it at all. I bike or, sometimes, drive to SBCC, parking at the Waterfront. Charge those who use the bus whatever it costs and not have the fares be part of the enrollment fees.

Of course, what can you do but laugh? For so many reasons! I remember years ago getting my hair cut downtown. The gal cutting it was dating a guy who was a carpenter. He had just spent years working on intricate, detailed woodwork throughout the main house on the property. Oprah came along and bought the house, and paid to have everything that had just been put in hauled to the landfill. She started over. I can't help but think she is now going to return the house to what it was when she first gutted it. And thus my friends is the life of the insanely rich. She'd be better off buying a modest home and sending her excess money to South Africa or South Side Chicago. I guess as much as her media empire is said to be suffering, she is still mightily atop the 1% pile and will do as she pleases with her largesse, which is her right. That doesn't mean the rest of us can't still judge.

I don't know enough to opine about the legal implications of this, but I do know the last sentence of her press release is offensive. Shouldn't she just do her job without giving herself lavish praise? Most people go to work and do their duty without trumpeting their amazing commitment to what they are paid to do, in this case " fight against sexually violent predators" with a capital S, V and P. Pretty vain and self-important.

Not sure what you're asking. Are you asking which Target stores (Oxnard, Ventura, or Thousand Oaks) have the largest selection of clothing, shoes, and home goods? Why not visit each, and decide for yourself? That would be better than asking opinions, because it's not necessarily quantitative, unless users had actual numbers. You should maybe send an email to Target's corporate headquarters and ask them for the information.

942p. You are right on. Eddiekid. You do have the right to judge. Many people in the world don't make in a day want you spent years ago getting your hair cut, you likely have potable water, electricity, heating and can pay $4.95 for Edhat. You my friend would be judged as 1% in the eyes of many. A matter of perspective.
