Weasel

2013-02-11 12:09 AM

As I have posted before, keeping chickens is not for the faint of heart. They are a prey species and whatever can get at them to eat them, will.

That said, I doubt a weasel would kill so many at one go. You really have to make your coop fortress-like, follow 997's instructions and also be vigilant. Poor chickens. Everybody loves to eat them.

I once saw a possum running around (if you'd call it "running") in my neighbor's coop, with a chicken in its mouth. When I yelled at the possum (this was around 1am, so it wasn't a booming yell), the possum dropped the chicken and then "hid" under a small shelf.

The possum's tail was sticking out. I had to laugh, although the chicken was pretty shook up. After scaling my neighbor's fence, I opened the coop, "rescued" the chicken, and shooed away the possum. (He had sense enough not to play dead.)

There are a few more stories I could tell about various neighbors "feeding" the wildlife with their badly protected chickens, but, suffice it to say, and it bears repeating, chickens are a prey species.

PooPoo Neighbor

2013-02-11 01:38 AM

A family member picks up every day. Neighbors let their dogs roam onto our property. In the County that is illegal and Animal Control picked up one dog and neighbors had to pay a citation due to leash laws. The problem continues daily. One unfriendly type told us he'd believe it if we got a picture of his dog in the act. We did and that makes no difference. The problem goes on and on and on.

It is outrageous that people have so little regard for others.

How about approaching the problem this way: Inform the Health Department that your management company allows dog feces to be deposited and remain on common grounds. If the Health Department gets after the management company, then the latter would become proactive.

And if the cigarette butts enter the waterway (blown there by gardeners, for example), certainly other agencies would get involved.

Weasel

2013-02-11 07:15 AM

So very sad to find your pets that way. I love chickens and had them most of my life; my deepest sympathy. Seems to me I remember when growing up (very long ago) that the weasels punctured a hole in the neck and sucked out the blood. In the 1960s we had homing pigeons and the skunks bit the heads off the squabs, left the poor things sitting in their nest, just headless. Two years ago a racoon reached through the wire and pulled feathers out of my hen, traumatized her (I'd forgotten to lock the hen house). Depending on the clues, a wildlife expert could likely tell you what animal(s) killed your poor hens.

The only reason we suspected a weasel because there was not any apparent way into the pen large enough for a raccoon or bigger predator. We are out of town so we have not seen exactly how they were killed - our daughter was too traumatized to further investigate. But it is odd all of them were killed. BTW thanks for the protection ideas!

I certainly miss Matt. All those that came and went along side him were great too because Matt made them great. I still remember Matt's first week, talking about leaving early in the morning for work and it was still dark outside...and because of all the spiders at the place he was living at, he had to do a "tomahawk chop" all the way down the path to the street.

He was brilliant with his show prep, sound effects, and gimmics to get the listners involved. Very sharp.. I enjoyed when helper boy Mike (Dawson) was on the show too.

Here's a blast from the past...how about "Steve Downs, and John Palminteri" as the morning show? They were awesome. Then Steve left to take a job with the famous "Loop" station back east.

I'll tell you one thing...the morning show has stunk to high heaven since Matt left. I don't even listen to KTYD anymore. They would be better off dumping the morning show all together, and just play music. Or sign up to sydicate the Bob and Tom Show.

I miss them, too. I stuck with KTYD for a while after they left, but I began to notice a horrible pattern regarding their stunted playlist--so much so that my housemate & I started a game based on it. We'd place bets on whether or not they would play one, two, or all three of the following artists between 8-9AM: Tom Petty, Rolling Stones, The Beatles. I mean, seriously--there ARE other artists out there from the "Classic Era"!

Needless to say I stopped listening to them years ago as well. Sad, really. I was a dedicated fan for over thirty years. Their programming director needs to do...something.

I discovered that by not letting the chickens out every day I was frustrating whatever was stealing them. I finally gave them away because their food was attracting too many rats. Actually some of the old Species (non-hybrid) Petunias are quite hardy. They are also small-flowered, leggy and less than brilliantly colored, but somewhat cold tolerant.

This particular Petunia has been around a while but it exhibits some of the characteristics of the original species. The color combo has never fired my rockets. I prefer Salpiglossis ('stained-glass flower') with petunia-like blooms on upright branching stems and glorious veination in the brightly colored blossoms. They really do look like leaded glass windows when backlit.

Hardware cloth (1/2 inch ), but use U-nails to attach it, as staples can be pulled out by a dedicated raccoon. Dig in the extra, and cover the floor (buried) with it too, to discourage digging predators. The 1/2 hardware cloth will keep everything out.
Sorry for your loss. I think your most likely culprit was a raccoon, skunk, or possum, but without details we can't tell you exactly what did the deed. Weasels and foxes live around in the more isolated parks, but they are so shy that I am unlikely to deem them as the predator responsible. I've seen raccoons fruitlessly spend a long time around our coop unable to get in. Invest in some hardware cloth and safety latches and you're good to go.

As a motorcyclist who splits lanes responsibly, it troubles me to hear about all of the bikers that are involved in accidents between Santa Barbara and Ventura. I don't hold either party responsible, but I have noticed that there are still a lot of car drivers that change lanes without looking twice. And recently i have noticed more people on their cell phones too. You're not fooling anyone by holding the phone in front of your mouth instead of to your ear (that's still against the law) and probably more dangerous.

We live in Ellwood Canyon and have racoons, bobcats, coyotes, possums and skunks- you name it. We lost several hens prior to building our fortress- 12 x 9 x 12 and fenced all around, plus a roof. Poor girls would love to run around outside but they would all be dead in hours. One thing we did that has discouraged predators is to install 1) a solar motion detector light and 2) a "Scarecrow" water sprinkler that detects motion outside the coop and sprays water suddenly. Only problem is I have been sprayed on many an occasion when I forgot to turn it off! We had a bobcat that scaled a 10 foot fence, killed several hens and took one back over the fence with it. Sorry to hear about your- it's a major sadness when that happens. Mother Nature is no lady!

Keeping rodents out is harder than raccoons, but the half inch heavy square hardware cloth is working for us. I only feed inside the coop (house) and not in the run. We shut the pop doors at night, the coop is raised and the roosts are not with in raccoon arm distance from the vents. That way the food source is sealed up at night and our barrels of feed are tin with tight sealing lids. Since replacing the old coop and going to the new one we have stopped rats from visiting our chickens.

We secured the hardware cloth with beer caps as a washer and 1.25" screws every 4"

Might be interesting to ask a Montecito realtor this question and get a more accurate account of what is happening in the Montecito market.

If you think rich people pay a lot of taxes, think again. They would rather pay an accountant a bunch of money to get a bunch of writeoffs and tax deductions so they can offset any taxes they might have to pay. Plus the accountant is tax deductible too.

I doubt that any of the rich people living in Montecito actually have businesses that create jobs unless you count their domestic help. Money managers and actors don't create jobs! They manipulate the markets to increase their wealth.

If you want to bring back manufacturing in this country, give massive tax breaks to anyone that actually makes something useful and tax the heck out of anyone that is only manipulating the financial markets.

Sorry to bring it up, and I may be way off, but is it possible a house cat got inside? Smaller than bobcats, but can be pretty deadly. I hate to think someone else's pet killed yours, but it's a possibility. Weasel could have done it, but unless whatever got in was trapped in there with the chickens, I doubt they'd all be dead. I'm guessing whatever got in because trapped & freaked out, killing the chickens (that's what happened to my boss - bobcat got in, attacked & killed a dozen birds). I assume after he killed the birds he was able to find a way out. very sorry you lost your feathered friends. Hope you reinforce the coop & get more, they are a joy to have.

There Once Was A...

I was a goody two shoes from 30 minutes south
when at 11 my mom divorced my dad what a louse.
I was sad cause my new friends were loco but was happy for two summers at Ranch Oso! I woke up surrounded by boots and more
for the poor girls could not stand my snore!
A boy even liked me and he was kinda cute
but a girl got jealous and stole my loot.
For since I was five I asked for a horse
and when told; search: it was for an appy of course! I found the perfect most beautiful horse he was only nine
and when a nice stall and corral was found, he was mine!
Alas the girl next door was an expert rider even gymkhana
ditching me on her bay arabian mare sauna.
I learned how to ride a young high-strung mount
and only fell three or four times if I count.
I didn't have a saddle and only a wisp of a mane
but hide and seek was the name of the game.
Our trails were narrow and winded around
and there was just me and busy no other sound....

Weasel

2013-02-11 09:35 AM

I live in Mission Canyon and had all of my chickens killed. My coop was 20 years old and I had never had a problem. I checked and could not find an opening big enough for a raccoon, possum, skunk, fox, bob cat or ring-tailed cat. I suspected a weasel but thought they did not live on this side of the Santa Ynez Mountains. To quote an online site: Chickens with the back of their necks and heads missing, with its intestines out and bitten at the rear are most likely victims of a weasel. What’s interesting is that weasels kill not only for food, but also for sport. In fact, they are known to keep killing until there is nothing left to kill. Due to its slender body, these animals can easily wiggle through chicken wires, small runways, and narrow holes—making them the bane of poultry owners.
I have torn down the old coop and I'm building a chicken fort.

Tyresome meme (take that spellcheckers), the truly wealthy don't have salary and wage income, they have dividends. If you take your CEO pay as $1/year and the rest in stock options, you'll only pay 15-20%. And if you are cunning, you can value those at pennies on the dollar and then tuck them into your Roth IRA (see Mitt as one example) where they can flower into tens of millions of dollars. There are also numerous off-shore games to be played that are unavailable to the people who read Edhat. Serious wealth is almost unimaginable.

@933 everything about driving is a right what rock are you living under? Checkpoints allow police to stick their head in your vehicle and determine at their own discretion whether you are abiding by the law or not. Unless you commit a crime or are suspected of a crime you never under any circumstances need to ID yourself or show your proof of insurance/registration etc etc to a police officer. These checkpoints allow them to question every person as a possible suspect, regardless of how law abiding they are. What about that do you not understand is a violation of privacy........

Montecito Estates For Sale

2013-02-11 10:37 AM

140 (& 164) hit the nail on the head. Manipulating money is not creating jobs or wealth. I'm fed up with the ultra rich and politicians being in collusion to make the rich richer. Us small business owners work extremely hard and long hours to create things, employ people, and contribute to society in real ways. Buying politicians to change the tax codes to get richer isn't a form of work that I respect. (140, if you run for office, I'll vote for you.)

As to why all the big estates are going up for sale, probably lots of reasons, but it's fun to speculate about the 1%.

You can diss that morning show, but obvi there are a lot more people that miss it and Matt did SO much for our community. Matt and Seed would be a great show - bring him back! It's so worth KTYD, I can't believe anyone listens to the show now. Seed is now all grown up and would do well as a co-host. Matt's girls still live here, I bet you could get him back! Do it! I tried reporting human poop in the City Park,to the Health Department, and they told me that they wouldn't get involved with that. The City Park people told me that they would give me little flags that I can put near the area every time, and they would clean it up!! HUH!! THEY need to patrol that area and clean it up. Why should I have to patrol the area????

So, I planted cactus & succulents in that area, and the City removed them!!! They don't even pull weeds or water, but they seem to have time to remove perfectly good plants that serve a purpose. Feel my frustration.

Dog P.U.

2013-02-11 11:01 AM

If the pup is getting in you car wet (or damp enough to soak through a towel), buy a cheap shower curtain, put that on the seats first, then layer towels or a cheap (thrift store?) blanket. Wash them whenever they stink. And to get rid of the smell, buy a carpet cleaner vacuum thing & do the seats & floors, if needed. 539 has a point that dog noses are especially sensitive, so soaking the seats they use with febreeze might not be the best for your furry friend.

There are always big estates on the market in Montecito, but I do think the rich are afraid of a coming major recession, and it's possible they're attempting to unload major assets in advance.

Unfortunately, I don't believe we're coming out of the economic funk, as President Obama claims. I think we may be heading for another big drop.

Just want to say thanks again for all the stories and information. It seems that others have had the same experience. Interestingly we had these chickens for close to ten years (I didn't even think they lived that long)! And had not lost any to predators in that time. We had seen a rat in the pen on occasion but apparently it just wanted to steal food. So it was shocking to find them all dead. We will probably reinforce the pen and get some more chickens. I was wondering if anyone knows a good place to get some young chickens (hopefully past the chick stage)??

239 - Because there is no law specifically prohibiting splitting, the CHP regards it as "legal."

The guidelines say it should not be done when traffic is flowing at 30mph or more. Should be used mostly during traffic jams where most vehicles are stopped or crawling.

So, I guess motorcyclists should pass in the same way as other motorists at freeway speeds, no?

More than once I have come within a hair's breadth of accidentally sending a foolish, speeding lane-splitter to the morgue. If you're going to ride like a jerk, at least be careful!

Tick Bite Advice

2013-02-11 12:29 PM

While gardening, I was bit by a tick within SB city limits and had the classic symptoms within 3 weeks. My (ex) doc misdiagnosed it and it went into chronic Lyme Disease. My positive blood test is registered with the county health dept. I'm now in my second year of anti-biotic treatment which might have been avoided with a post-bite 10-day treatment of doxycycline. A reliable blood test for humans and ticks is by 'IGeneX'. See a LLMD (lyme literate medical doctor) if you suspect long-term infection. Lyme is in every state and is the 3rd fastest spreading disease in the US (1st vector borne disease). CDC estimates 300,000 new cases each year. It's under-reported and SB health department doesn't have the funding to do outreach so please tell your friends that Lyme Disease is in Santa Barbara. Become familiar with the prevention and symptoms at ILADS.org.

Montecito Estates For Sale

The real sham is that these people who are "fed up" with taxes will move to a state with low taxes, while still profiting off the economy in CA (and likely actually living in CA still).

And whats even worse is that the states with low/no taxes actually cant support themselves and take a disproportionate share of $$$ from the feds. So, while CA is getting relatively pennies on the dollar per capita from the feds we need to raise state tax, the "business friendly" states are actually just the recipients of welfare from CAs economy. Hows that for a welfare state.

CA has a booming economy being bled dry by "business friendly" states that "gasp" dont generate their own revenue.

Overturned Semi on Hwy 154

2013-02-11 01:21 PM

272 - banning semis from the 154 is not going to happen. I own a trucking company and every driver has been warned to never use the 154. We have one account that delivers in SY and the drivers go up the 101 and access it that way. The stress the 154 puts on our trucks is not worth it - any big rig driver or owner knows that and avoids the 154 like the plague. Going to say it again, most GPS devices direct you to take the 154 - those drivers learn the hard way. You don't save any time and fools are riding your ass the whole way. All that being said, share the damn road people and obey the move over law while you're at it.

And back to the original question...I've heard that many are now selling simply because the market has improved. Both buyers and sellers that were sitting on the sidelines until things hit bottom are now active. Sellers of Montecito pads were tired of seeing their neighbors list for $10M only to then accept a $7.5M offer; same theoretical-home now sells for $9.5M. My loan broker buddy also tells me that it's now generally easier to get an $8M residential home loan than a $800K loan. Who knew?

Soda ash is used by pool suppliers, so you can purchase it in the pool section of Home Depot, Kmart or any pool supply store. I checked and double checked that it was the same thing and it is -- sodium carbonate.

I hope she gets the maximum sentence available and has to pay full restitution for the ambulance, law enforcement and the recovery company that had to extract her trashed vehicle from the beach. Her actions are beyond vile and show total disregard for her life or the lives of others.

232-Island seed and feed have their newest day old chicks shipments coming in starting march 1st or 2nd. Sometimes they will keep them for longer, if claimed but not picked up. For additional fees past the initial $4 a chick, they may be willing to keep them til they're fledged enough to live outside, but I don't know as I don't work for them, you would have to call them to find out for sure. In April-May you can often find young chickens or half grown chicks fairly cheap on the SB Craigslist, under farm and garden. I like having a mixed flock of unusual breeds so I usually go the mail order chick route, myself. Good luck!

Montecito Estates For Sale

2013-02-11 01:52 PM

The exodus is logical. The bankers have destroyed our economy. It is expected to continue to collapse, albeit a little slower now, but its coming. Our "money" is considered virtually worthless by the rest of the world right now because we have reached the same point of insolvency nationally that we have as a general population personally. This recovery "step" or plateau is synthetic. The wealthy are in with the bankers because it is a mutually beneficial relationship. The momentary appearance of improvement is the best time to bail on these properties and get their money out. The cost(s) of securing and maintaining these huge estates are massive. When the economy fails utterly, those mansions are going to become abandoned, hollowed out homeless shelters. Historically, that's what happens to them eventually.

2013-02-11 02:11 PM

Plus the motorcycle speed is not supposed to be faster than 10 mph over the car speed. So about 40 mph max. Of course it is difficult for cops to patrol or catch violators so they will continue to do this unsafely. In fact, rarely have I seen this being done according to the rules that are out there.

One thing I wonder is that with people using wide Harley type bikes to lane split, how often to they scrape cars on the way by? Plus it is difficult to see their plates so it would be impossible to make them pay for the repair. Does anyone know if it is legal to have a camera rolling to catch this kind of footage? Is that okay as long as you are filming in a public place where there is no expectation of privacy?

Victorian Cribs of the Upper East ...

2013-02-11 03:28 PM

Dear BOOKSALELADY - Thank you for keeping us honest. We went back to our source that claimed James Acheson was a railroad man, and connected to the Acheson-Topeka Railroad. Your fact checking is a good reminder to us that just because it's on the web, it's not necessarily make it correct.

This was the info we got from a website called bigcitybuzz, linked to the Santa Ynez Valley News:

In 1990, through the gift of a generous donor, the historic Acheson House became the headquarters of the Architectural Foundation. This distinguished example of Victorian Italianate residential design was originally built in 1904 for James J. Acheson of the Acheson-Topeka Railroad. Centrally located in downtown Santa Barbara, the Acheson House is the focus for the Foundation's many activities...

We should have suspected the accuracy of that info on two points: First, the spelling of Acheson v. Atchison (who was reportedly a pro-slavery senator from Missouri, and after whom the Kansas town was named); and second, because the article calls the Acheson House a "distinguished example of Victorian Italianate residential design".

Having grown up in the neighborhood, we have always heard that this house was in fact one of the many Victorian prefabs built in Santa Barbara around that time, but we haven't yet confirmed this. If it's true, then Acheson House, while distinguished in appearance, is not not necessarily distinguished as in unparalleled or extraordinary.

California then lavishs on us free public education on our children, subsidized housing, subsidized medical care and free food. However, as we become more sucessful, the tax burden increases to the point that people want to leave California.

California has had a net outflow of the middle class and upper classes for the last 20 years. These folks are replaced by newly arrived (and generally) lower earning immigrants. Nothing wrong with that except Calfornia now has to tax the remaining middle and wealthy class more and more to maintain its tax revenue.

So yes, when we tax the "rich" more we will see them leave and go to states with lower taxes. This is exactly what has happened with several of my customers. And not only did they leave with their tax revenue, I no longer enjoy the revenue they provided my business. So, I end up earning less and paying less taxes. But it doesn't end there. I end up paying less to my employees and vendors because we are no longer as busy. And they end up also paying less taxes. The golden goose has be killed and our state budget is in deficit once again has it has been for the last decade. These policies are not sustainable.

Ironically, many of these Montecito houses are being bought up by foreigners as vacation homes. These houses will be occupied for just a few months out the year. And what the new occupants will spend here is a mere faction of the revenue of a full time resident. Will these foreigners even move here full time? Doubtful when the income taxes in their home countries is not much more than our highest state income tax rate. For example, China has a flat income tax of about 14% and Russia has a flat income tax of about 17%. Our current income tax system is unstainable.

It could be soot from your candles. Any kind of candle can cause this. It's mainly from the wax, but sometimes from a cheaply made wick.

If it's there when your candles aren't burned (and I mean for days on end without lighting a single candle) it's likely mold.

Ash from fires that happened four years ago is incredibly unlikely unless you haven't cleaned in four years.

@277, One of the oldest, least politically-influenced, and most respected scientific medical journals in the world, published two PEER-REVIEWED studies, the first published towards the end of our first 12 months occupation, and the second, in October 2006.

In the first study, their estimate of Iraqi deaths attributable to our invasion, was 98,000 IN JUST ONE YEAR. Further, the authors described this as a conservative estimate, because it excluded the extreme statistical outlier data from Falluja.

Their tally of "excess" Iraqi deaths was nearly 655,000 such deaths, in the second Lancet study published in October 2006.

Costco Gas Leak

A gas leak forces the closure of the South Coast's biggest retail store, complete with lots of cops, firefighters, the Hazmat team and other emergency responders--and there's not a word about it on the 6 p.m. KEYT "news."

Oh, there was a featurette about the driver of a Pepsi truck who escaped injury in a bridge mishap in Louisiana, but not word one about an event affecting lots of locals in Goleta.

Doesn't the KEYT "news" department own a scanner? Is there some contest between KEYT and the News-Press as to which "news" organization can best ignore the community?

Good grief!

Don't drive drunk or impaired (that includes using your phone while driving or operating a Prius). You may be stopped by a law enforcement officer to ensure you are operating correctly and safely. Yep, you agreed to that when you accepted your license. If you don't know that I fear there are many other factors of driving you aren't aware of: that means you are an uneducated driver. Great. Raccoons are very proficient at pulling any part of an animal through the wire and gnawing off the parts they can. They just excite the chickens until they're running into the wire, then nibble them to death. It isn't unusual to find the victim's body without head or appendages. Best solution is to use strong hardware cloth with small openings (not large), and build a second cage around the first with at least 12 inches between the two wire sides. There should be double caging on all sides - top included.

Praise and thanks are cheap... taking heart from it and passing it on - that's the larger lesson. Seriously, I hope your helper remains anonymous and is compensated for his deed with the knowledge that you will do unto others as this has been done unto you.

On the other hand your lass really deserves a lot of appreciation and benefits in the coming weeks and months. She is the one who took care of you and took action for you. Best wishes to you both.

May the good fortune you experienced inspire you to have a wonderful and meaningful rest of your life.

Many ignorant and resentful comments here. Just shows you the mentality of many in SB. No one ever mentions the millions of dollars each year the wealthy give to non profits and programs to help those in the community. Without their philanthropy the less fortunate would not have access to many services.

Why is it okay to recieve tax credits just because you have a child or 5? I should get the credit for not having a child. Why do I have to pay property taxes so everyone's children can attend free public school? The answer is easy. Without access to public school we will have a population of uneducated adults. And that affects us all. This is how the world works. Get over it. Maybe you shouldn't have picked the most expensive place to live if you cannot afford it. Move to Idaho. There you may be wealthy and actually do some good rather than sitting around whining...

@479: Perhaps, but there was not a single word about it on ANY of their three half-hour newscasts. Call me naive, but I'd think that the temporary shutdown of a large store like Costco and a huge turnout of emergency responders would warrant...oh, I don't know...maybe at least an acknowledgement on the local news broadcast? Sorry, a mention on non-news-related programs at 4:17 and 7:17 p.m. isn't the same thing.

Oak Tree Disease

2013-02-11 08:42 PM

Are you sure its Oak Tree Disease?

My Dad had a problem with his oak trees in Los Olivos years ago and many looked like this photo. Turned out after a soil test that the soil needed to be amended with minerals, the dead limbs removed and the base of each tree needed to be tilled and rocks put down for better drainage.

After a bit of work he saved all the trees. They are in their 40's now and gorgeous :)

I did find an article about sudden oak death from the New York Times in 2011. Looks like there could be a solution for residential trees. Try Google'ing California oak tree disease.

Yes, the wealthy do give millions to non-profits. But that is because we have a tax structure that allows the wealthy to dodge taxes by giving money way to non-profits. Wouldn't those lost tax dollars be better spent in our schools? Or invested in industries that created jobs?

The same tax minimization mentality that causes the wealthy to give to non-profits is the mentality that causes the wealthy to flee the state. And both of those actions causes the rest of us to pay more taxes to make up for the lost tax revenue.

It is better to be safe than sorry, especially when you weren't wearing a helmet (sorry). To all those would be hero's out there, please keep up the good work! You make the world a better place! Oak Tree Disease

I think the tree is pretty healthy. Pretty sure it's mine. It's 3 stories tall & I keep an eye on it; I love it and look out for it. Well over 40 years old; was well and professionally trimmed a couple years ago; dropping tons of acorns and NO oak caterpillar threads or bugs, just moths.

When was pic taken? What street is it on? What neighborhood?

Really, I'm 99% sure it's mine. Advice welcome; it's very dear & important to me. And it does NOT get watered; I think that has added to its health & longevity.
