Santa Maria to Hawaii

2013-02-06 12:15 AM

There was an earlier Edhat thread on this that you might search for.

We just got back from Hawaii. We had originally been booked on Allegiant, but they cancelled our flight so we had to fly with another carrier.

A one-way trip from Santa Maria to Honolulu is a convenient option, but I wouldn't book a trip with Allegiant unless the plane looks to be at least half full when you choose your seats. It's a pain when your flight is cancelled and they don't have other flights to offer.

Hope Ranch Skinny

BROSE805. We have a staff that maintains the roads in Hope Ranch. They use a process called chip seal, where they put gravel on top of the road. Within a few days it grinds down into the old road. The gravel effect only last a few days. It is hard to find roads at night, but no harder than it is to find them in Montecito. GPS on most cell phones is very accurate in the ranch.

Before one gets upset; eucalyptus trees are dangerous and they are non-native. They're called widow makers for a good reason. They are also extremely flammable; that's probably not an issue close to the beach. Perhaps those that are concerned can ask the city why they were removed. Maybe they were sick? Perhaps they were causing other problems, like eroding the ground beneath them?

Santa Maria to Hawaii

2013-02-06 06:41 AM

I was the OP for the earlier post about surfboards. All went well with our trip: a short drive up to park free at the airport, smooth boarding with a $75 fee for our 9' surfboard, landed earlier than predicted, all fine and dandy. The trip back was delayed a little in taking off but otherwise smooth going. . It's definitely a budget airline with a cabin that has tight seating and no ability to recline. But what do you expect for about $250 RT pp direct to Honolulu?
I get regular emails from them and they are having sale prices again for travel just before and after the spring break time, so they are booking flights again. Spring break has seats but they are more expensive yet still way cheaper than flying out of SB.Yes, they did suspend flights for Feb and part of March due to low numbers reserving. Our flight both ways was full or close to full. The times to fly aren't too convenient, but it didn't bother us.
For the low fare I would do it again in a heartbeat.

It's only in one city and it's a total money losing venture for them. They've spent $20-30 billion on it so far and they're losing $800 per customer on it currently. Based on what they've spent, it would cost them over $500 billion to implement it nationwide. I imagine they'll expand into a few major cities, but obviously, they don't have nearly that kind of money to go nationwide. In short, we'll probably never see it in SB. Way too small of a market.

The Eucalyptus immediately west of the Beachside Cafe supported nesting Great Blue Herons until 1991. At that time some trees were severely trimmed and the herons moved to the Eucs on the Southern California Gas property on the north side of the estuary channel where they are nesting now. The colony grew in size until approximately 14-17 pairs nested there in 2009. Great Egrets began to nest in the heron rookery in 2002. Double-crested Cormorants began to nest there in 2008. The cormorants now outnumber the herons and the nesting area has spread eastwards in the Eucs nearly 100 meters.

I don't know about the Honolulu flight, but after my last trip to Las Vegas on Allegiant, I would never fly them again...I went with a group of friends for my 50th B-day, we left at 7 a.m., drove from Santa Barbara fro the 10:00 morning flight, you have to check in no less than 2 hours before the flight, (for a 1 hour flight----they told us on the phone we risk not getting on the plane) Our plane was broken down, so they were trying to get us another flight, but we sat all day in the Santa Maria airport, finally got to Vegas at 5:00, lost a whole day of our vacation--we could have driven to Vegas and back in that time...Then on the return flight, they loaded us onto the plane, then had us sit there for over 2 hours, as the computer system was down on the plane...prices are great, but their planes need maintenance, both directions of flight we had a bad experience.

The reason that Google chose Kansas City MO was that the city owned most of the infrastructure. There is no way that any entity can do this on a national scale (let alone in SB) due to the patch work of infrastructure ownership and rights. Too many companies, municipalities and private owners who all want too much money or other kickbacks to make this work anywhere... especially in CA.

The only hope for high speed universal access is via the various radio spectrum that are owned (but licensed) by the FCC. Personally I believe that internet access is a fundamental right for all humans and should be treated as such... some countries in the EU have declared it to be a right, but since we're ruled by profits more than principles, it will never happen here.

Holy Guacamole!

2013-02-06 08:36 AM

In the 1980s my parents lived in a tract house off Cathedral Oaks near Old San Marcos Rd. Their lot had several avocado trees on it. Enough that it was somewhat hard to really see the house.

A couple of years they had "the association" pick and market the avocados and they got enough money to pay property taxes from the crop. Other years when the crop wasn't so good my father would pick and take a box of avocados to Safeway and they'd buy them for 25 cents each. The next day he'd see them in the bins at 50 cents each.

I REALLY miss not being in SB and able to have fresh avocados. In Silicon Valley I think most of them in the stores come from Mexico and are bruised pretty badly between the store handling of them and my wife's lack of care in bagging them to bring them home.

Google Fiber

2013-02-06 08:45 AM

Typical DSL and cable internet, like Verizon and Cox, offer internet speeds in the 5 Mbps to 25 Mbps range.

There are two tiers for Google fiber. One tier gives you 5 Mbps internet for free after an initial installation fee. The paid tier gives you 1 Gbps internet (~1000 Mbps, although I've heard it's around 700-800Mbps, still really fast!).

Verizon also has fiber optic internet service called FIOS, which offers speeds in the range of 50 Mbps - 300 Mbps. Sadly this is not available in SB. Cox has somewhat of a monopoly in our area, and our choices here suck.

Those who decry that internet access is a human right believe in positive rights. Doing so means that this service should be provided for using Government coercion or force. Thus, they are content with holding a gun over the heads of ISP's to get their free internet (the ultimate teeth in all government regulations). I believe in negative rights and voluntary association. Google it.

If I remember correctly Fry's is in Ventura/Oxnard area now. It you are going that way you might want to check the price of materials there if you're doing your own wiring. Don't think you'd want to pay for the freight costs of a 1000 foot roll of CAT 6 so finding it where you can pick it up is worthwhile.

In Silicon Valley they have just about the least expensive wire and hardware for networking. Also there are a lot of sources on the Internet that sometimes have good quality items at very good prices. When Fry's had only 2 or 3 stories I used to buy that type of stuff for the college I worked for and get it on a will call basis.

I think these days I'd just depend on my wireless router to get the internet to the other end of the house.

Tourists would come to the beach in rental convertibles with the top down and look for a shady spot. An hour later, the interior would be ruined. Eucalyptus are a non-native species so a few less isn't going to hurt. The Cormorants found another place to hang out and poop, further from exhaust fumes. The trees were removed approximately 3-4 years ago, not 20.

Goleta Beach Eucalyptus

2013-02-06 09:08 AM

"Australia is known for its eucalyptus trees, although only two varieties are naturally found in the Northern Territory: the red river gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) and the Darwin woollybutt (Eucalyptus minata). The red river gum is a common tree along the waterways of the Northern Territory and is frequently the dominant species of these ecosystems. It is a medium to tall tree, sometimes reaching heights of 100 feet, and is greatly varied in its growth habit depending on its environment. The red river gum blooms from late spring until early summer, with masses of cream-colored flowers. The Darwin woollybutt is a small variety of eucalyptus with dark-brown, peeling bark on its trunk and papery, white bark on its upper branches. It is easily distinguishable from other eucalyptus trees by its bright orange flowers and star-shaped seedpods. Both varieties of Northern Territory eucalyptus trees are colloquially called "widow makers" for their tendency to drop large branches without warning."

A minor detail, but I believe the latest DOCSIS 3.0 cable modems will allow channel bonding. This will provide you with the opportunity to pay Cox even more for bandwidth above 25 Mbps.

I think of internet access as a conduit to knowledge. In that sense, the more people who have it, the better.

Right now even the mid range cox up to 20mb download is more than enough for anyone streaming video, surfing the net, playing games online.

Although 700-800mb would be fun, not sure I would actively try and get it. Unless its already here, like Kansas.

I went to the Police station and got info about the 911 call in my Westside area. I'm sure someone that really wants to know, could do the same for the Eastside area. By the way - That East Victoria block is very close to the High School. If you want a copy, they will charge you .20 cents a page. My 911 report was one page.

If someone gets arrested, not just transported, then there will be another Arrest Report that is public info.

371293P - No, the cormorant droppings do not really wreck a tree. No, they don't become oxygen-starved from the leaves covered with droppings, or gradually poisoned by the droppings. Trees respirate through the underside of the leaves, not the top of the leaves so the droppings are not a problem. Bird dropping are one of the best fertilizers there is so they are not being poisoned. Eucalyptus trees are perceived to be dangerous for other reasons; their brittle wood and their oil rich bark that peels and accumulates around their base.

Conceptually, a person could buy at a gun show in say Arizona and bring the weapon across the state line.

It is illegal even in a private party face to face transaction to sell the gun in Arizona to a non-resident of Arizona, but there is no third party check to verify the sale is going to a resident or non-resident. It is up to the person selling the gun to verify or accept the residency statement of the person buying the weapon.

All interstate sales are required to be handled through Federal Firearms Licensed dealers (FFL) for both sides of the transaction. This is true for all 50 states.

Additionally on interstate sales to California, the gun has to be a model that can be legally held in California. That part of the transaction is verified by the California FFL on an incoming transaction.

Your friend must live in Kansas City, MO. They are testing it there, and I know several people who have it and love it. There's a very small chance it will come out here, and if it does it will probably take years. The cable companies have too tight of control on the monopolies they have in most of the country to give it up without a giant fight. We could easily convert to this over much of the country and improve our infrastructure at the same time, but it's probably not in the cards.

I'm with Dirty Harry on this one. People want cyotes, squirrels and anything "wild" removed from their neighborhoods, along with tall trees cut. Too many self-centered people indulging their "high class" problems. Mother Nature is in charge and because humans are destroying almost every other species, we'll be inheriting what we created: toxic pollution, not enough potable water, and GMO food. I'm glad I'm a senior and won't be around. On another note, the City is tree trimming crazy as shown by the removal of Palms on Cliff Drive and the butchering of trees at places such as the Douglas Preserve. They seem to hire men who can use a chain saw with no knowledge about the trees. Almost all of these actions are resulting from not trusting humans to have common sense -- don't climb too high, park your car elsewhere, and comprehend what Nature does for us.

As an IV resident, when I first moved here I could not believe there were no fences at the edge of the precipices. Property owners are obligated to have a barrier and signs but the open spaces and parks? This was over 10 years ago so I cannot verify it is still the reason now but when I read through all I could about it, there buried in some notes of a meeting with IV Park & Rec was their reason: Because it would be an admission there was a problem! Not budgets, preserving views, or maintenance issues, they felt if there were fences and people still went over they would be more legally liable! How is that for Government efficiency? Find this nugget and bring it into the light, see if things change. There should be fences, people die every year.

Totally diagree. Why would you need a fence to warn you of an obvious cliff? How long will it take for some drunk to climb said fence? I bet first night. How about we all just take responsibility for ourselves. There are plenty of parks with no fences along cliffs ie ellwood or wilcox and everyone is fine.

Maybe the IV students that shame this city should show enough responsibility to not play on the edge of the cliffs when they are drunk. Should every exposed cliff of this beautiful coast be protected to prevent idiots from playing on the edge ?

While were at it, maybe we should put pedestrian bridges over all of the roads in IV to prevent drunks from being forced to stumble through crosswalks.

And I would also like to see swim buoys put in off shore to ensure drunk swimmers have something to cling to when they are tired.

Where does the nanny state draw the line ?

The Beachside is one of my favorite restaurants. I was glad to see the Eucs removed due to the stinky mess of bird poop over the years. Cormorants had created a similar mess at he Santa Barbara zoo which made it unpleasant to visit the area with the Island Fox and Condor exhibits. Those cormorants have moved to several trees on Ortega Hill along 101 where their nests and poop have partly defoliated the Eucs. I was told that the 101 construction activity 24-7 near the zoo disturbed them so they moved. It appears that the Eucs at the zoo have recovered fully.

Volunteers already DID do the work for free. I know because I was one of them. It takes an historic consultant to train the volunteers. The money being asked for today is for inputting the information gathered by the volunteers into the system. Let's see, the waterfront survey was done in 2002 and it's only now being funded for inputting into the system? That tells you two things: 1) housing bubble trumps historic preservation, 2) the local government is so UNDERfunded that it's at least10 years behind that we know of.

You will be able to enjoy the restaurant Monday through Saturday. The company gives their employees Sunday off to go to church and spend time with their families. 2) Requires medical attention within minutes for survival (up to 60 minutes).
3) Includes compromise to patient's airway, breathing, and circulation.

You'll go left around the first lower tower. About halfway down the trail leads right to a 40' rock ledge, so be careful there and downclimb to the left (class 3). In response to 472. The sites were lost because the lease on the property was up. And for whatever reason could not be renewed. QAD may have moved all together. Not sure. All I know is that VERIZON WIRELESS is SUPER committed to getting this problem resolved, and they have been rejected time after time. 2 years ago they worked a deal with Westmont College to put a cell tower on their property. This would have blanketed the Westmont area as well as the backside of 192 which has never had good Verizon coverage. At the very last minute the deal fell thru because of concerns over caterpillars. Yes caterpillars. This has happened to Verizon over and over. They value the Montecito, Summerland and Carp communities and truely want to provide fantastic cell and 4g LTE coverage. So whoever out there has any ideas, I believe they should contact Salud Carbajal just as 483 has indicated.

Other than the gangs and maybe a couple of the rougher homeless, I don't see a whole lot of violent crime in this town. Sorry but the cops do come across as a bit of an excessive paramilitary organization for this little town. I think the cameras are a great idea, and well worth the money because they will cut out the BS for both sides. Even the lawyers won't be able to make up as many stories to try to sway the jury. The pictures will be worth a thousand words and at $1000/hour for both attorneys and a judge, they will pay back pretty quick. Hopefully the audio is decent as well.

Most likely, since there were CHP officers on scene, there was a traffic stop involved. My only input...defund the entire thing and contract maintenance of city trees to private enterprise. What I see of city maintenance includes removal of popular street trees in spite of protest, blase attitude about citizen complaints for overgrown trees and outright hostility towards complaints of sewer intrusion.

@458 Contact the owner. If they will not take care of the problem on their terms, you have every legal right to cut the roots off at the property line just like you can with overhanging branches, whether it kills their tree or not. Just a few minutes with a pick can stop the advancement of your problem, even if it doesn't repair the damage.

2013-02-06 03:40 PM

I was wondering about hiking it from E. Camino Cielo at La Cumbre Peak. If you look here on gMaps it looks doable on what's tagged (if you zoom in) as the top of Tunnel Trail. I looked at the area in gEarth, and as I recall it's about 1,000 feet vertical from the road to the bottom of the saddle connecting to Cathedral Peak. Of course, getting up to the peak from the trail might be even harder than the rest of the hike. Flying over the area recently, it looks like the dense scrub hasn't fully grown back yet so a trail group might be able to clear a route. Anyone hiked it from the road? Maybe it's harder than from below, plus the climb back up to La Cumbre would come at the end of a tiring day.

Probably, yes. Based on almost every encounter I have ever had or witnessed with the SBPD, there are regularly way more police present than are needed, wanted or helpful, and they tend to stand around talking and doing nothing way longer than they need to.

It's a small town with low crime, so I don't blame the cops for wanting to get in on what little action there is. But I do blame them for constantly telling us that they don't have the resources to patrol State Street, write traffic tickets, investigate crimes (including the massive embezzlement in their own office) disseminate surveillance photos in a timely manner, or any of the other services we want or expect.

I love trees. But, I am tired of the poorly choosen trees the City gets away with planting. The evergreen pear is a case in point. Three months out of the year it drops its leaves or flowers. And then the roots damage the sidewalk during the growing season. By the way, is there any reason to plant decidious trees in a mid-climate such as ours?

If the City defaults and plants inappropriate street trees we should be able to take them out and plant something much more appropriate.

If you look at photos of SB a hundred years ago, (when there were steelhead in our creeks) there were very FEW trees. What trees were here were sycamores and oaks. The rest is garbage and now the "Creek Geeks" in the city tell us we shouldn't wash our cars...! LOL!
They all graduated from UCSB environmental programs and "made" positions for themselves in the City- Now we have to pay their salaries and have their garbage shoved down our throats about not being able to trim YOUR trees on YOUR property....PLEASE!

As others have said, nobody can tell if this is over the top since it's nothing that we know about. You don't know what the circumstances were.

That said, I notice that smaller town cops, like ours, tend to go en masse to a scene sometimes. I think it appears to be a socializing event for them, sadly. But it could very well be with a reason and intent we're just not seeing.

NATURE BOY, you missed the comment that was removed entirely. There are still comments with words like, "bigot" and references to religion, remaining. There are ways of expressing a point without the use of shaming tactics. Those that don't take issue with Dan Cathy are called haters by those that actually use hateful terms when commenting.

My response to the hate in this community is to boycott the local shops and any organizations that I know for a fact take part or have a connection to this nonsense. That includes their volunteers or employees. I think it's referred to as "Turnabout is Fair Play" or something. I don't shout others down. I spend my money elsewhere.

General Comments

This is about the Bus station and buses.

Why in the Transit center they keep announcing the buses in SPanish if it's the same thing as in English. They think that Hispanics are not smart enough to learn the numbers?
Plus english and spanish are very similar. And the hispanics could easily learn the ENglish.
for example. Why do we have to have it repeated twice like this

"Line 2 Eastside" "Linea 2 Eastside"

That makes no sense. It's the same thing.
Who came up with this idea that hispanics need to listen to the bus thin in Spanish. It's so simple to learn the basic numbers especially since Spanish and English are similar.
The translations are not meant for Spaniard Tourists either. They are for hispanics that live here all their life and could easily learn the ENglish numbers.

Arlington -> Cathedral -> Inspirati...

2013-02-06 05:58 PM

John, I recently brushed the trail from the back side of Cathedral down to the saddle and up to La Cumbre Peak. It's very well-defined, and easy to follow, trending south and west from La Cumbre, starting at the picnic table and turning right at the large boulders with the white GT graffiti. Before the saddle there is the one "tunnel" section where you'll need to crouch quite a bit while you scramble down, but it's short. Note that there are numerous dead end trails that you won't see until you're coming back up to La Cumbre that will take you easily off route (if you go down and back and don't a the loop). I recommend taking a piece of chalk and making a few arrows on the rocks on the way down. (Cairns are annoying and the chalk will wash away with the next rain, making it a more enjoyable experience for the next hiker---once they get past the trash and graffiti.) Have fun, it's a great hike.

We need to figure out a new approach, seeing how our traditional way of dealing with this has NEVER worked well... doesn't it seem silly to keep using the same method and then expect new/different results? It's not that we don't trust you, but rather that we cannot trust you for liability reasons.

All the "don't disclose the location" folks: If a poster is asking for an identification, they they should at least describe the habitat in which the bird was seen as this often is a very important key to identifying a bird. Local birders have a sophisticated network to share precise locations of unique species with each other. As long as watchers keep a respectful quiet distance with binoculars or zoom lenses, I think it's important to encourage the public to visit local wild areas to experience Santa Barbara's diverse wildlife. Studies show over and over that first-hand experience viewing wildlife has a profound impact on an individual's likelihood of supporting protection of wildlife species and their habitats. Tip toe out and enjoy and learn!

660: you have a point, but identification wasn't being asked here and quite a few identified the owl on the basis of its markings. Local knowledgeable birders probably do know where to find specific species.

People are encouraged to visit wild areas, but unfortunately too many people do not simply "tip toe out" to enjoy, but bring off leash dogs and a lack of carefulness. Posting on a public place such as this the location of a rare bird with a diminishing habitat would be asking for problems.

House Wiring

Insight Electric, Richter Electric, and Waterfall Electric all have extensive experience in running and fishing CAT5e and 6, and quad shield coax. I have worked with all three and are equally fantastic at fishing wire down walls and terminating them. They usually leave the network setup to a network pro.

Holy Guacamole!

2013-02-06 09:50 PM

When I was growing up in Davis, farmers used to invite us townsfolk to glean the orchards after the pickers had gone through: almonds, walnuts, and apricots. We had a lot of canned and frozen apricots.

Police Presence

I agree it was probably overkill by law enforcement, especially since they apparently already "had" their man.

I suspect the first 6 commenters are cops or relatives of cops who closely monitor Edhat to spin every story in their direction. There were way too many strongly defensive comments within a matter of minutes to accurately represent the Edhat community.

I'm happy the poster asked the very legitimate question, and I see no reason for the over the top response right out of the gate, other than agenda.

All public servants should know the public is watching the quality of their work, and accept that as part of the careers they have decided to peruse.

I'm sorry to say it but I think the trolls have overrun Edhat.

Ugg Repair

370P, So what are you telling me? Deckers has all kinds of synthetic materials for their other shoes. Are you saying the other products they have are very damaging to the environment? Also, just Because something has been going on for 10,000 years doesn't mean it's right. Yes, I have thought things through. That's why I do care for other living beings and the suffering that they endure at the hands of selfish humans that will do anything for the all mighty dollar. That's the problem. Most people aren't thoughtful, mindful, whatever you would like to call it. Thank Goodness we have evolved. Things are very different than they were 10,000 years ago. At least for some of us. I hope YOU think things through, and can soften that rock where your heart is supposed to be.

Yea, this world is a mess granted but murdering your kids and then killing yourself is no way to solve the world's problems or yours. Tragic.

Police Presence

2013-02-06 11:11 PM

SBPD does not have 10 motorcycles. They have 6....and they work different days and different shifts with never more than 4 working at any given time (absent a special event/parade). Get your eyes checked. And they responded to the kids party because one of your neighbors called.....likely because your kids were being so loud and inconsiderate that your own neighbors were compelled to call police to get their peace restored (apple usually doesn't fall far from the tree). Do you really think three of them were cruising your neighborhood looking for 7 year olds to harass?? People call the cops so the cops have to go.

OMG, I worked with this guy. Santa Barbara View is speculating that the conspiracy writer of a 9/11 book could be part of a conspiracy! Link to that story please!!! Was he killed? The two kids were in the Santa Barbara School Districts!! Crazy story. Wish Newshawk would have had a local writer or two on it. BTW, why do the misspell news?
