Take some photos of your home to Tileco. Have the gals there assist with selecting a replacement. They have seen it all and have good taste. Then double check the selection with a tile installer (can't give you a name as my installer moonlights after hours from one of the big boys). The installer will tell you how much tile, grout, and thinset to order. Manage the order yourself to save the contractor markup.

Another nod to Nola at NS Ceramic, it is certainly the place to start any tile job and when you get to installation a big vote for Milo Vorhees from Santa Ynez , Just plain gifted and works well with designers. We've had him for 5+ jobs all excellent and a good eye for grout choices.

I second Tileco. We have used them for every tile project in our house over the past 18 years. The folks who work there are great about giving their design ideas and advice. And the selection there is overwhelming. It will save you a lot of money to place your own order, as the previous commenter suggested.

Having just done fireplace and kitchen re-tiling, I suggest NS, too. Robin is great there, as well as Nola. TileCo is OK, but I don't think they have the same degree of design skill, and they definitely don't have the same breadth of selection, especially for artistic tile. It's fine for more mainstream tile, and Mexican tile. NS may cost more, I am not sure, but you get every penny's worth you pay for. Who you choose depends on whether you are starting from scratch inspiration and knowledge-wise, or if you have an idea of what you want.

Never felt unsafe there, even recently, there are always homeless people and some whole camps set up, but they really keep to themselves and I've never felt bothered by anyone livnig there. I have done 5 remodels in Santa Barbara, I love both tile companies mentioned, but if you have to purchase a lot of (mostly marble) tile, go to Emser Tile (818) 718-2933. That's where the tile companies buy their tile. The best tile design/installation person that I know of is Javier Jaramillo, Jaramillo Tile (805) 886-9919. Call him and he'll take care of it all, such as finding replacements, design work. He has designed bathrooms, showers, fountains, entries, and does amazing work. Honest, dependable, I can't say enough good things about him. Everyone who uses him just loves him and his crew. They're the best.

One interesting question to me is why this guy would drive 3 hrs to the Shumash to gamble when he has at least two large casinos very near his house in Murrieta. Plus that the cops identified his car by looking at the video tapes from the Casino garage; just remember that next time you are at the casino and then commit a crime where your car can be identified. I wonder where his gambling money came from? My coworker brought his elderly parents in from Asia and got them citizenship, and now they each get $600/mo from Social Security and free health care from Medicaid without ever having worked or paid into the system. America is a great place!

Motorcyclists Down |

Lane splitting is only legal at speeds of 30 mph or less, which means it is only supposed to be done in stop n go traffic. Most lane splitters I see are not doing 30 or less. Besides, why are people lane splitting in those big wide Harleys and Goldwings? If you're going to lane split, buy a smaller bike! Motorcyclists that are splitting at speeds faster than this seem to have a lot of faith in the driving ability of the cagers, in that we are not texting or calling or changing CDs or suddenly want to change lanes to get into that open spot next to us. Personally I think it is best to assume that each cager is distracted and might do something unexpected at anytime. Otherwise you are a statistic waiting to get counted.

Some people may scoff at this sort of thing, (as I did when I first moved to CA from IL), but I honestly think that there could be something to this sort of thing. I am learning more about the history of human beings on this planet, ancient wisdom lost from great teachers and mystics. Indian Ayurveda at first glance looks like hocus pocus. Learning more about it, it's absolutely astounding how people 3500 years ago knew so much about gem healing and even planetary alignment and health. So much of this wisdom was squelched and has been lost, so today it seems like a bunch of bunk. Now science is even finding that the Great Pyramids were sound healing chambers, that tapped into vibrations that healed the sick! Remember, acupuncture and chiropractic were thought to be quackery when first introduced to this country. Now insurance pays for them! I am open to all possibilities and it's a good place to be.

A great idea for contaminated soil is to leave it exposed, so it gets rained on and drains into the watershed. And so when the wind blows it gets in your lungs. Much, much MUCH better idea than putting a new building over it that would keep the soil dry and contained and mitigate risk.

DMV Paperwork |
2013-02-04 09:08 AM |

OP here; thanks for the comments. I am selling an equipment trailer with "Special Equipment" license plates. CA DMV went to "paperless titles" a few years back. Buyer wants to take trailer to Arizona, but will need to show title to bring into Arizona. Local DMV says to fill out Form 4017, “Transfer without Certificate of Title” but this method won’t work for buyer moving equipment out-of-state. So DMV says fill out “Request for Certificate of Title” (the other side of Form 4017) and then wait for title to arrive and then transfer title the old-fashioned way. But two separate agents at DMV Sacramento say they’ve stopped issuing paper titles – they say best I can do is produce a “Bill of Sale” which buyer doesn’t want and so I am confused. Because this involves commercial (not personal) equipment, I did not think AAA would address it; but will find out!

Ayurveda is a recognized form of traditional Indian medicine. However, people claiming to intercede for you (in exchange for money) with angels and "ascended masters" and such things are delusional at best, charlatans at worst. The website referred here is worth a look; it's almost a parody of these types of things and of the sort of self-awarded "credentials" claimed by those who promote this dubious "wisdom" to the lonely, sad and gullible.

I believe that the old dairy that used to occupy that lot had an underground fuel tank that was removed when Isador bought the lot. I do not believe that there was any major contamination. He had and may still have dreams of a bigger restaurant but has not had time to pull it together. He let customers park on the lot until the City made demands that were cost prohibitive and Isador just decided to chain it off. It's too bad. It would make a nice community garden, though, if the City would not interfere.

I have been a diver for many years. There are buddies and there are buddies. Some get very complacent and don't stay within a nearby perimeter. There are some who can be distracted easily. I was married to one with whom I often dived and I had an experience in those same waters where kelp ripped off my weight belt and my mask at the same time -- my buddy was nowhere to be found as I struggled. Fortunately, my training was excellent and I didn't panic, so I survived. (And really chewed out my buddy when we surfaced.) No matter how you prepare in advance, stuff happens and its how you deal with it when it does that makes the difference between surviving or not. I've done over 100 dives in lots of places and I just returned from a glorious trip where I dived seven times in 11 days. I'm careful. I'm cautious and because I am, I feel safe. I've heard about people having a heart attack while diving -- I guess if you're going to have one, there couldn't be a more wondrous, beautiful place to have it happen. I'd rather it be there than anywhere.

I asked him nicely to NOT do that and he started arguing with me, so I called the cops and they gave him a nice ticket for parking on the curb. They wanted to give him other tickets but I talked them outta that. Needless to say, that RV found another place to park.

Plus, that obnoxious RV guy, would park too close to our driveway, making it totally impossible to see oncoming traffic when pulling out. On San Andres between Victoria & Micheltorena. I found out from the City that it's very easy to get signs posted "No RV Parking", which would have been my next step, if he hadn't left the area.

My decades old univega 10 speed got stolen out of the back yard. I bought a brand new bike and then found a bike sitting against the summerland posting board. It had missing parts and flat tires. Obviously a free bike, I told a fellow nearby about fixing it up for his kid or something. He didn't want it so I threw it into my car. A sheriff in his personal car noticed but did not think twice about it. My friend fixed it up and I gave my new bike to my new son in law, who had his bike stolen on the mesa. It was the same exact model!

No, birds do not mate all year. Most animals' mating season is timed so that the young are born when resources of food are most abundant. But doesn't mean that in some species pairs aren't bonded throughout the year or at least until the young are fledged, in the case of birds, or reared. I'm not 100% sure but only humans can be fertile all year... some apes/primates may mate throughout the year but I'm not sure about being in estes, or fertile, year round. FWIW... there are no dumb questions, only dumb responses.

We did a remodel a few years back and Tileco was - hands down - the worst company and offered the worst customer service throughout the entire process. They are hardly the only company in town that loses interest in you once they have your money in their hands (although they were the most blatantly obvious about it) but they virtually got everything wrong that they possibly could. Ordered the wrong materials, over-charged us, much of the tile ended up being broken, and deliveries were late or didn't show up at all. And since we had already paid up-front the response or assistance when we needed help was "disinterested" at best. The receipts and invoices they provided used store codes instead of line-item descriptions so it was exceedingly difficult to figure things out. I could go on but my blood boils just thinking about it, even years later. Maybe they treat contractors or subcontractors better than Joe and Jane Q. Public like us, but caveat emptor with Tileco!

Seconding 618 for the win! Leakage from gasoline tanks from gas stations, former dry cleaning locations, and other "normal" activities are our most prolific "super fund" environmentally contaminated sites. Friends who are professionals in the environmental field say that many former corner gas stations require obscenely expensive clean up when they cease operations. It is insane that the regulations and laws are such that whoever the current owner is, is stuck with financial responsibility for clean up ... and that's why so many contaminated sites just sit. It's cheaper and more logical to do nothing than to risk being inundated with clean-up regulations and bills before you can even begin to use the land.

462 here. I was telling my boyfriend about this after I arrived in Ventura and he was on the freeway by our house (Goleta) about five minutes before me. He saw a black cafe racer driving aggressively who was wearing what I saw on the rider(small blk helmet, green tshirt, no jacket). This rider was going around 120 mph, forced a car into the shoulder and was driving with no hands. There's a chance it might not be the same guy, but it seems like it was. Any updates?

Adan Arellaga is our tiler/ carpenter 252-5428. We've worked with him on remodels for 8 years. Working in the industry all the time, he knows the codes. He advised us to change our marble fireplace design, because he said, "In Montecito they do it this way". He remodeled a kitchen for us in 21 days in his spare time. He advised me how much weight the countertops could hold. He made sure the dish washer could get in and out. He spent 2 hours with me laying out the kitchen countertop and splash stone grain flow and marking where each piece was going to go 1st. NS Ceramic,Tileco, Tile Encounters, Jack's Kitchens are good to talk to about design and what is new on the market. Take measurements and try to define your design style before you start. For larger tile purchases I buy in LA - StoneMart, or any of the tile warehouses along the Anaheim train tracks called "tile mile".

I guess Edhat is OK with resurrecting this topic frequently. Always the same info given. Broken record... Tile Co outright lied to me about the tile I bought for the job Jason and his crew did in my house. I specifically was shopping for a tile with color throughout it, in case it got chipped I wanted it to not look so obvious. They assured me the tile I chose had color throughout. Nope. Kaiser isn't really that great. Consider it a good thing we don't have it here. If they are good at all, it is in really large cities, not areas like ours. Cottage is very powerful and probably does keep competitors at bay. Have you noticed the monopoly yet? If someone had proof, it would only be that they are the only hospital ranging from Carp to SYV and have purchased the only other viable hospitals or clinics. It would be nice to have some competition since that breeds expertise and choice. But Kaiser aint it.

Stop blaming Cottage for everything for Pete's sake. Kaiser acquires it's way into communities. They are a large organization and thus have heavy overhead. To make their model work they need to own a nearby Hospital and then affiliate medical providers who become part of their HMO. As an HMO doctors acquire patients on a capitation basis. Most in Santa Barbara Have insurance which affiliate with a PPO (Preferred Provider Network) that allows patients to see their own MD's. In Kaiser, you see Kaiser MDs who refer to Kaiser specialists and Kaiser Hospitals. Personally, I prefer choice.

Kaiser is vastly superior to anything in Santa Barbara right now, but the problem is that Kaiser's system requires a large member base to work. SB is just too small of a town to support a Kaiser facility. Maybe someday, as LA creeps north, we'll have access to Kaiser's superior system and be able to dump these local yokel doctors. For now, I travel to Ventura to use Kaiser's facilities because I don't want to be butchered by some incompetent local provider.

The Cottage monopoly is relatively new. Even a few years ago, Sansum/SBMC were independent and there were three hospitals in Santa Barbara /Goleta. Cottage has gobbled them all up. Had Kaiser wanted to buy the Catholic hospital (can't remember which saint it was named for) a few years ago when Cottage bought it and tore it down, presumably they could have. One reason we have fewer HMO's in Santa Barbara is the high cost of real estate here--space costs more so they can't make enough of a profit.

I recently reread his obit and I have to wonder how he found the time to be on the freeway what with all of the wonderful things he was touted to have, do, and be. Surely he must have known better than to be drunk at any time, but not to be drunk AND on the freeway whether by foot or in a vehicle at any time. Let's just hope none of the kids he was mentoring decides to follow in his shoes. It just does not make any sense to me. If we know he was drunk, I am sure he wasn't alone. Someone out there knows the truth. Please come forward and restore his good name. As for the casino, with their security system they were able to account where and when my ex was there following me, and helped me to get a restraining order.

Boy, hard to believe that anyone would trust Kaiser's doctors over Sansum's. Look at the credentials and then judge for yourself. Kaiser is a medical mill...they bumped my uncle out before clearing up a serious lung infection (tubes and half dead) out before time and he died two days later. The other doctors couldn't believe it. Nor could the nurses who are even better judges of when a person is really ready to leave or not!!!

Those who say that Kaiser isn't great don't have experience with the system or at least recent experience. I was so sad to lose Kaiser when we came to SB and drove to Ventura for a year before switching plans. I miss the efficiency, standard of care, extensive wellness course offerings, wellness coaching (free), and of course, my doctor. It's not for everyone and if you have difficulty taking personal responsibility for your health or advocating for your health it is probably not a good fit. I was told that Kaiser bought some land in Santa Barbara last year, but couldn't find anything about it online. Will keep crossing fingers.

744, I have recent experience with Kaiser (and I've got a background in medicine) and I disagree completely with the idea that Kaiser is good at all. I also completely disagree with your dismissal of their problems as being people refusing to take responsibility for their own health. Kaiser's very objective shortcomings don't boil down to personal responsibilities. Also, Kaiser buying land in SB is an urban legend dating back to the early 90s. Sorry!

Why do some people feel the need to answer questions that aren't asked in the first place? I used to get frequent jolts of mind numbing pain from my lower back down to my left knee. This is a carry-over from an old auto accident at least two decades old. What has helped me to keep them at bay are Pilates stretches. I don't do Pilates- just the stretches. The incidents of these surges of white-hot pain has decreased to less than once a year, probably. I started the stretches about ten years after the accident. I can honestly state that in my own situation, the stretches helped more so than any of the treatments or pills I was prescribed for the first ten years after the injury. BTW, people hauling things in the backs of your trucks or on trailers, tie that mess down. Your belongings being dropped in front of the car behind you on the highway can have devastating consequences all around.

Actually, 753P, while you're absolutely right that they were never a logging company, they did start as a shipyard building and a dam making company - not strictly as a hospital or health care provider. They later split up into a bunch of different companies that partially formed a consortium that gave the first HMO "style" heatlhcare to dam builders and contracted union members in the building trade. I'm guessing the person who thinks they are a logging company originally got confused while briefly doing a google search. Their headquarters are in Oakland (or used to be) in an old logging mill building. It's like playing that old kids' game telephone for some people on this site!

That makes no sense and is just you deciding something on your own. People make mistakes. They don't deserve to pay with their lives. It's much more likely people who knew this man were unaware of his troubles and would never follow in his footsteps, as you say. Your personal story has nothing to do with this one. Mellor at Med Center? NO!! Go find a primary care doctor, let him/her diagnose you and refer you for further tests (eg.: MRI) Also, a prescription for physical theray is a great call too. It could be muscular or disc related. Also, not to scare you but it can be a sign of a much more serious illness. Find a GP and get seen asap.

Please try to get a referral from your regular GP, if you have one. OR a friend you trust. As you can see, everyone has a differing opinion on good doctors. 763's comment is scary, but if you have had acute back pain for a few weeks it's unlikely to be a sign of anything other than straightforward muscle pain that can be sorted out. A serious illness is unlikely. (Get off the internet before some else really scares you and you don't get any further looking for help. Good luck!)

I had a bad disc and could have avoided months of pain if I had insisted on getting an MRI in the first place. You need to know exactly what is wrong, then seek treatment.

Never ever go to a chiropractor first if you have such serious back pain. None of them have an MRI machine. Some have xray equipment, but disk and muscle problems cannot be diagnosed on an xray. As 766 says, find out EXACTLY what is wrong, THEN use PT/Chiro if warranted. The doctors at the Sansum clinic are more than capable of diagnosing your problem.

I found a book very helpful... "Oh My Aching Back". Depending on what the symptoms are, will be critical as far as what you do on a daily basis. Yoga helps me a lot. Easy soft stretching. No twisting of any kind. Mindful of how you sleep, sit, stand. Exercise, especially your stomach muscles, which hold your back in place. Do you have any idea how you hurt your back? Why is it hurting and what things seem to make it worse?

772 is absolutely correct. I knew someone who had severe back pain who had been going to a chiropractor, the problem turned out to be a very serious one that no amount of chiropractic would have solved. Find out what is actually "wrong" before you allow anyone to treat you. Your primary care doctor should give you a referral. If you are a man your doctor may want to do a PSA, which is something men should probably have done when they are having back pain that doesn't go away. Good luck, I am sure you will find the solution.

A chiropractor can ruin your back and cause a muscle imbalance that can takes weeks or months to undo....if you're lucky. Try going to a regular doctor for a referral and then seeing where that takes you. You might need an MRI or you might not. Please, don't do stretches or yoga til you know for sure what is up in there. A good osteopath or physical therapist can also assess your pain and symptoms.

Maybe the cooing is from the Eurasian Collared Doves. They are relatively new arrivals. This is the first year I've seen them in my yard.

I don't think there's an ASPCA in Santa Barbara. But there are some similarities in the full name of the national association and the local humane society.

I wasted three years on chiropractors and physical therapists. I was finally referred to Dr. Alan Moelleken (this was about 14 years ago). He eventually operated on my back and since then I have led an active life, free from debilitating pain and the misery it engenders. I realize that he's had some bad press in the recent past but he's an excellent surgeon.

That is Roger's brand. He has a following. That following is a benefit for the site. To eliminate that following would be a step backwards. Now, as far as appealing to those that don't like his posts, why not write the site operators and ask to become a daily blogger. You could get your name on the navigation bar to the left. If you posted your pic along with your posts, we'd either honk and wave when we see you on the streets or honk and give you the finger. Roger provides a wonderful service and he does it with humor. I appreciate that.

821p: you are SO RIGHT!!!! A fool will throw his money at a bet; a winner will throw his money at the hand that he knows will win. I always told my son: "Never ask a question that you don't already know the answer to; also, never ask a question if you think you may not like the answer. ".

I saw Dr. Curatalo (neurologist) for my lower back injury. Turns out it was a bulging disc at L4/L5. The MRI was done at Pueblo Radiology and confirmed the bad disc. I was sent to physical therapy at Hayashida PT. Rob Sparrow worked with me for about 2 months to overcome the pain and strengthen my core. Have had minor recurrance but now I know how to manage & prevent the problem. Many back specialists won't take you if you're a first timer with a disc problem. As painful as they can be, things like bulging/slipped/herniated discs are a dime a dozen ... although the OP didn't provide any specifics so we don't know exactly what his/her issue is.

I think it is the La Patera Ranch. I was especially intrigued by the penmanship; I have noticed a correlation of German and the Scandinavian languages. I especially noted that the author recorded the date in the American fashion.

The original posting asked for appropriate stories regarding visits at Mme. Rosinka's. The door has been open at the wharf location and I've been afraid what might be said about the future, true or not. As for fools and money parted am certain there are many, many stories of local businesses who have parted money from fools; that might be a separate topic.

I went to see her on the wharf with a friend and she told me I would live well into my 80's, have many children and even more grandchildren. I would also be married within a few years and "in production" fairly quickly. This was in the late 80's. Not one thing she mentioned has happened. Never married, no children, fewer grandchildren. Everytime I go by there on the wharf she is closed. Does anyone remember when she had that glorious bird out there and someone took it? Think she knew where to find it?!
