Restrictive general housing covenants were made illegal in 1948 and private covenants in the 1968 civil rights act. Private clubs no longer have such restrictions overtly, but they can still be restrictive just by who they invite and make welcome. People don't need to ask if you are Jewish, they can figure it out in all kinds of ways, if that's what they care about. I'm a Jew with and English name, and I know how those people go about it. Has anyone see the old movie about this, Gentleman's Agreement? Very funny Rex.

SBIFF Tickets

2013-01-25 04:02 AM

@ITSSCOUT: But see, you CAN'T. If you can't simply go to the box office--or even by prearrangement--and buy one ticket, then you can't buy just one ticket. Knowing the right people or somehow finagling a ticket or otherwise jumping through hoops isn't the same thing at all.

Of course individual tickets would cost more, probably substantially more, than a bargain matinee at the Plaza de Oro. Just don't force us to by groups of tickets that we may not want or use.

The film festival is obviously very popular amongst a number of area movie aficionados. All I'm saying is, stop treating it like something that embraces all of us. By its exclusionary nature, it doesn't.

I think the crowd at Valley Club would be far more worried you were nouveau riche from LA, or under 60 than if you are one of the chosen people. Unfortunately you still have to be chosen by them to get a invite to join, La Cumbre did in the past not allow there to be Jewish members but thankfully they moved past that. VC's course is superior to La Cumbres if its the golf you crave.

Talk to your neighbor. If unreceptive, notify him in writing that the actions of his agent may cause a problem, flood, fire etc. Once notified, in writing, of a specific problem, a property owner is on the hook if he does nothing to remedy and it causes damage.

I've been an Elk for about 6 years now, was an officer for 2 years and my husband has been on the Board of Directors for about 4 years; never had anyone at anytime (other than the investigation prior to membership, which asked all kinds of basic questions) try to steer my religious beliefs.

Why would anyone care if someone was Jewish? No, I don't expect an answer, I just never got that. I understood the development of other prejudices, but not Jewish. I'm not Jewish and grew up thinking it was just another religion. Regardless, in this day and age, there are not written policies and generally not unwritten ones either, it's just who is liked by the group at large.

In the 70's I was invited to lunch with a friend at the La Cumbre Country Club. The fashion in Europe that year was "Denim". It was everywhere. I am British and had just been visiting my home. In London women were wearing pearls and diamonds and fur trimmed denim to the theatre, and the runways were competing heavily for this material!

I entered the club with my friend, dressed in my denim skirt and a crisp white shirt.

The head waiter came up and said, " I am sorry, denim is not worn at this establishment". We left. I was red faced, totally embarrassed and almost in tears. I decided then that SB must be a backwoods pretentious town.

I wonder what the club rules are now?

Growing up in the neighborhood of Ramaro Cyn. the word was it cost lots of money to join and all the costs of running the place were divided up evenlly between the membership plus an extra % to to run it for the next year. Triple net. The other rumor was Bob Hope was a member, but hardly ever played there. True or False?
I also used to hunt for golf balls in the creek in the summer after the place closed for the evening. I could fill up an egg carton every time. I wonder why? :-)

Some people hate and/or distrust Jews. They don't really know why. And they don't come right out and admit it, because in today's world you would get vilified. Same thing for gays and blacks. Anyone who thinks that racism, homophobia, and anti-Semitism has significantly decreased over the past 50 years is living in a dream land. What has significantly decreased is the number of people willing to admit their feelings openly.

If you are ever asked to join the Valley Club, and you are gay, black, and/or Jewish, you had better believe that that will be held against you.

Let me also congratulate the city for finally cracking down on its employees and ensuring that they put envelopes on car windows prior to closing the lots.

I'd like to think that my rants on Edhat about the fact that I had gone an entire year without paying one cent in a lot, even though I pulled in at 6pm and left at 11pm nightly, finally got through to the right people who made sure the youngsters that work for them did their job.

The city was losing well over half a million dollars a year because no one was putting envelopes on cars. Now, I'd say my car gets an envelope approx 90% of the time, which is very good indeed.

Job well done. I don't mind paying the $3 at all.

I am the person who wrote the original post here. Thanks to those of you who responded with suggestions. My thoughts:
First of all, I did let my neighbor know of the situation, but I see no reason to burden him with the problem. He did nothing wrong. Secondly, I don't know the protocol about making public the name of the company I believe is at fault. I'd rather try to see if I can make him own up to his problem through pressure from a legitimate oversight agency. If that doesn't work, I may follow up with a progress report using the name of the company. Finally, I have had no luck dealing with creek issues in the past. The authorities tell you everything you cannot do to the creekbed, but since it's on my property, any problem is mine to fix, including clearing the creekbed of debris. I have filled my pickup many times with junk and vegetation that washes down and clogs that creekbed.

There is, in fact, an Urban Creeks Council.

Try sb-urbancreeks dot org. It's a non-profit and it lists contacts for community leaders for nearly every creek in the southcoast area.

Also try Brian Trautwein, who works at Environmental Defense Center and is one of the founders of Urban Creeks Council.

City Councilmember Cathy Murillo's husband, David Pritchett has long been a creeks activist/restoration consultant. Even if you aren't in the City of SB her office might be able to refer you to David.

There is a long history of people protecting our creeks. These are a few who have devoted themselves to the creeks. I urge you to contact them.

Scam or Legit?

2013-01-25 07:59 AM

Last week, during the day a 15 year old girl knocked on my door. I didn't open the door. Through the peep hole I saw she wasn't carrying anything. No clip board, cards etc. Asked what she wanted. She said she was from Indiana and was raising money for a program to help get over her fear of public speaking. She said that she earns points from finding out what people do for their careers. She asked me if I own my own business and if it was out of my home, what my husband does for a living etc. She said if I donate money, it would get a subscription to a magazine, but "since people don't like mags anymore, you could buy them and have them donated to veterans or seniors". I called the police and as soon as I mentioned magazines, dispatcher immediately asked me where she was, where I was calling from, and there was an officer in sight in about 3 minutes. I don't know if she was detained etc. because she had moved down the street out of my sight. Scammers!

@154 & 239 I wonder if your experience was different from those whose children were molested because of wealth differences from those who were singled out for their being less likely to retain lawyers, etc. "At-risk" children were singled out.

This information would have been available (via confession, church counseling, etc.) to advantage the perps over the most vulnerable children.

It is tacky that you both would blithely give your versions as if it absolves a rotten institution of willfully inflicting great harm on children. It's becoming clear that the child molesters weren't run out because they were condoned by those in high positions of power and/or the organization harbors so many child molesters that it is viewed as a normal part of the culture.

If you gave weekly donations to this organization then your money subsidizes these actions.

You could try sending a certified letter to the company involved telling them you have sent a copy of the letter to your attorney and asking them to come back and clean up their mess or you will pay someone to do it for them and then sue them in small claims court for the cost. The "Attorney" letter usually does the trick.

I used Ancestry.com and found him. William Francis Jamison was born in Santa Barbara on 18 Nov 1898. His parents were Richard Belt "Dick" Jamison and Annie E. Ilenstine. Both parents were born in California and died in Santa Barbara. Billl married Lydia Rose "Alita" Stamm (from Michigan) in 1928. He was a Master Mechanic for the City Fire Department. In the 1940 census, Bill and Alita Jamison lived at 2733 Verde Vista Drive. Two step-children: Dorothy Rosendahl Wegher (b. 1916) and Gary Rosendahl (b. 1918). According to the census report, Alita and her daughter Dorothy worked in a school cafeteria. Gary Rosendahl was a painter. Dorothy died in 1950. Gary died in 1966.

Bill Jamison's grandfather was Tobias Belt Jamison, b. 1831 in Maryland. In 1859, two years after getting married, Tobias and Mary Elizabeth Cooksey set out with a wagon train across the U.S. to California. It took them five months. Mary Elizabeth was pregnant with their second child on the trip. They had fourteen children.

Tobias Belt Jamison died in on the Orella Ranch in Santa Barbara County in 1907 and his funeral was at the Presbyterian Church in Santa Ynez. His wife had died the previous year.

I wouldn't buy a house in a neighborhood that I knew had one up the street. I don't make any apologies for that. I just wouldn't and I'd bet many other buyers wouldn't either.

I am getting tired of babysitting everyone with their recoveries, help me get on my feet, Food stamps now have a cutesy name so no one knows that you can't afford to feed yourself, donate to the food bank, free contraception, Help the starving artist (who has enough $ for paint, beads and weekend activities), help the school, donate to this that and everything else. Like the Flight attendant suggests when those oxygen masks come down: take care of yourself first then reach out to others. Maybe call your family and say "I need a little help." This fella might not have written this post if these people had listened to "Just say No!" or "D.A.R.E." that we funded.

Be careful, they could be casing your apartment. Moving trucks and boxes on the curb are a sure sign new tenants. By knocking on your door and posing as JW they can get a look, albeit brief, inside your place to look for valuable items in plain view. Since your neighbors may not be all that familiar with who you are and who has been helping you move, someone going in or out with boxes might not raise suspicion. Make sure you have changed your own locks, and provided your landlord with copies, to make sure the old tenants don't still have a set.

Or maybe when they ask you about Jesus, you ask them about Allah. That should keep them away.

MITZI Santa Maria and Lopoc contribute both good and bad to the County. The "Chumash" casino contributes nothing but a magnet for all manner of crime, drug and alcohol abuse and a place where so many people can go to lose their money, particularly many who cannot afford to lose their money needed for necessitites of life. The casino has now been packed with "penny" slot machines and a few nickle machines to make it affordable to all the drug and gambling addicts that frequent the place and a number of old people who, apparently and unfortunately, can find nothing else to do with their time. Despite the fact they are a major contributor to crime and substance abuse they pay none of the taxes needed for all of the public services and infrastructure they place demands on daily. That is certainly much more worrysome than a six person sober living house!

317: This accident was between Mesa Lane and Las Positas and was not part of the recent changes. The main issue on this stretch is the speed limit. It is currently 45mph, however, people regularly fly down the hill at 60-65mph. Not the smartest move when there are multiple driveways on both sides of the street and visibility for those exiting driveways may be limited depending upon how far down Cliff they are located. Lowering the speed limit to 30 would help. Yes, people will still speed. But perhaps they will keep it to 40-45.

Neighborhood Sober Living Facility

2013-01-25 10:17 AM

I've had both bad and good experiences with living near a sober living facility. When I was living in San Diego a sober living home moved in next to the quiet and safe apartment complex I had lived in for years. Within days my boyfriends car along with several other cars were broken into. My boyfriend's car was broken into 3 times and mine was broken into once. It was so bad, the complex manager hired a security guard for the evenings. The theives caught were all from the sober living home. They would sneek out at night, steal and get high. Needless to say, we moved.

The flip side to that story is where I'm living now (in Downtown SB) and have been living for 7 years. Across the street is a long established sober living facility that is well run. I knew it was there when I moved in because of a business connection but most people have no idea what it is. They are very quiet and respectful and we have had no problems with the patients there. Get involved and good luck!

This is illegal dumping, plain and simple. Even if it weren't a creek bed, your neighbor has no right to dump anything on your property, including branches from a tree which overhangs the property line. I have researched this because my neighbor planted many spreading trees along our fence line in San Roque. Fortunately I just asked the neighbor to have her "gardener" come over to collect anything that fell on our side, and problem solved. Even if it wasn't your neighbor personally who dumped the stuff there, it was his employee and therefore he is responsible. It's very nice that you are dealing with the company directly, but if nothing improves you can report illegal dumping. The number listed for City of SB at the Less is More website is (805) 564-5631.

If you pay for the plugs, i'll even innoculate them and give you a few to grow your own if you are interested, OP! In a year you'll have more delectable mushrooms to eat than you'll know why to do with. ;)

Or if you are a gardening type, you could use the logs to start a hugelkultur bed that you won't have to irrigate after the first year.

LOL @ 297- obviously you never went through the "just say no" and "D.A.R.E." programs that you refer to, for if you had you would know what a joke they really are. The only thing I got from participating in D.A.R.E. that I can remember was a breakdown of the appearance, ease of access, method of use (inhalation, insufflation, injection, ingestion), and effect of each kind of popular drug on the streets. It made kids who had no prior knowledge of drugs get just enough accurate information to become curious about trying the ones that sounded 'cool'. I have had many many more friends and acquaintances get addicted to drugs and alcohol who went through the D.A.R.E. program than the ones who did not.

To the OP- I agree with those that say that these homes are a mixed bag and it truly depends on management style and the organization running the place. This is a worthy post and I am glad that you brought it up and are reading many perspectives on this.

Try thinking about the overall problem, cost and comfort.

Smile at sweaters and hot water bottles.

Consider a whole-house insulating, heating, air conditioning, and electrostatic air cleaning.

Smile again and get a great old-fashioned floor furnace so you can hit the 1930s-type 1-2-3 light button and stand over the marvel of hot air that heats you immediately and heats the rest of the area in minutes.

Some of their clientele migrates down the street, and engages in drug use. There's no oversight or real counseling going on. Their next-door neighbor is also a sober-living home, and you'd barely know they were there except for the crowd of smokers out front. There's another one, a makeshift home in a Pini property, and there is little sober-living going on in there! People are remanded to these things by drug courts, and so you might get neighbors that care little about your area. Or you might get a really good one, like 2 of ours.

Orca Petting

2013-01-25 11:35 AM

Congrats to the OP on a wonderful experience. I would love to have been there.

For the most part, wild orcas are not dangerous to humans. To other animals, yes, but not to humans. I know researchers who go into the water with the whales to observe their behavior.

Also the OP did the right thing, turning off the motor. And while the Marine Mammal Protection Act requires people to not chase, harass, etc, a good plan is to guess where the whales will be, take your boat to that spot, and let them come to you. If they want to interact, they will.

Finally, I am amazed by the lack of knowledge on this topic. On most issues, there is more I do not know, than I know, but I try to not comment on things on which I am not knowledgeable.

"How was it that our transcontinental railroad was built through virgin territory, requiring track base, bridges and tunnels to be constructed, using crude tools by today's standards, and despite delays due to the civil war, built in less time than it takes to widen our existing freeway from 2 lanes to 3 from Santa Barbara to Ventura?"

Easy. No such thing as NEPA, no such thing as CEQA, no permitting processes. Unlimited resources, no environmental review, and a desire to actually build infrastructure.

Two of them visited me while I was in my yard last weekend. I told them I practiced the religion of Samba.

They both looked confused and mouthed the word "Samba". Then they asked me what it was about, and I said it was a "dance from Brazil." (I'm part of a Brazlian dance group here in town.)

They asked me if I enjoyed dancing, and I said, "Yes, and dancing is my only religion."

I smiled at them and wished them good day. Confused, they burst into laughter and went on their way.

Basically you can switch out "Samba" for whatever your religion is: beer, Twinkies, needlework...

If the cougher has the flu, you've already been exposed to his infectious aerisolized droplets.

Otherwise, the coughed upon one has been exposed to the flu (if the cougher has it) and is now a possible vector of infection him/ herself. A problem if s /he gives the flu to the very old, very young of medically compromised people.

Radiant Heat Electrician

I have the same heating system, arguably the stupidest concept in the world. We routinely had winter electric bills over $500 for decades, despite keeping the thermostats set to 62 degrees, as suggested by SCE for my house. I replaced refrigerators, lighting, etc. with energy-saving alternatives, to no avail.

All these years later, my bills have plunged by hundreds of dollars a month (!) since I got rid of my water softener and switched to a portable exchange service. I highly recommend trying this.

I have been told by numerous electricians that there is no one locally who can fix or repair these ceiling radiant heat systems.

It really is a shame that those who just don't care about our creeks make such negative remarks when those of us who do are trying in a very civilized manner to keep them healthy. Urban Creeks Council was the only entity that even responded and sent someone out...twice. But that was the end of it, never heard from them again when I thought something was moving in the right direction. Stopping the flow of a perennial creek because of illegal well usage for lawns because you don't want to pay for your own water was ruled illegal in the courts but like anything else, if you don't enforce the laws, what is the point of them?

Yes, the guest does pay the tax but ultimately the hotel is the one that pays. That is because the room rate with the tax is higher than without the tax. The guest has less money to spend on the trip so they will make up the difference in some way such as to stay less time. This would then equate to less revenue for the hotel.

For those of us who live on a creek, obstructions make the difference in a very dangerous flood situation when they back up water which swirls and eats away at the banks, yards, and home along them. It is nothing to scoff at. It happened here albeit Nature caused it rather than some irresponsible party dumping trash into the creek. The damage is usually irreversible and costly. Yes, something does need to be done. If Mr. Carbajal isn't interested in something, you won't hear from him believe me. If he is, he'll get right back to you. I know this firsthand. He is not interested in this one as I've tried to get him involved. It's tough, I'm hoping for a breakthrough that will help us here on Romero (Picay) Creek as well! Good luck!

It sounds amazing and they are super easy to set up - you are up and running in 5-10 minutes (provided you have a good internet speed and WIFI signal in your house). We have 2 Zone3 speakers and they sound sooo good. you can also control everything from your iphone and/or ipad. next on our list is to buy the sub.

Freeway Improvements

2013-01-25 03:53 PM

A mile at a time loses efficiency. If you think of construction in phases, you get demolition equipment together and do a whole multi-mile stretch before releasing the equipment. If you have to move pipes, culverts, and conduit, then you get that equipment together and work on that, etc. If you do one mile at a time, you have to keep paying for all the various kinds of equipment, skill sets, etc throughout the entire project, which is much more expensive.

Put another way, you don't build a house a wall at a time for the same reason.

I find the information here about golf clubs and their membership fees interesting. In the 1950s I had friends whose parents were members of the Valley Club and went to debutant parties and lunches there. Beautiful place, I don't imagine there is another golf course in SB County as nice. Birnam Wood was built for the people who couldn't get into the Valley Club.

Jehovah Witnesses

2013-01-25 04:48 PM

They do not expect to convert anyone. They believe that they are commissioned by Christ to TRY to contact every one in the world and provide the OPPORTUNITY to open a discussion about the the message in the bible. For them, it is the effort that they put forth that counts, not the results. They merely want to provide you with the opportunity to access what they believe is the "TRUTH" of the bible. And it's true that they keep track of who they've contacted and the neighborhoods they've covered. But there's nothing personal about it. Sometimes the "DO NOT CALL" notes don't make it to the "territory" maps that they check out. And before you knock the Witnesses, when Katrina happened, the Witnesses emergency assistance for their members was so effective that the Government and state response agencies pointed all relief efforts towards the Witnesses relief organization because of how well they were organized and how effective they were.
They're hearts are in the right place.

Junior High students are forgetful when they feel icky and are sent to school anyway by their parents (for all kinds of reasons, I know). I have to remind students everyday about how to cough into their elbow. I do it with love, a kind voice, and not loud enough for others to hear, and most do it "right" the next time. Most people who are out when they feel bad just dont really think clearly, and a kind gentle reminding is all it takes....and maybe a kind word about feeling better soon.

Insurance Woes

Don't pay attention to the advice tendered by 555. First, most attorneys who specialize in this area will provide you with a free, initial consultation. Second, most work on a contingency fee basis, meaning you don't pay an hourly fee. Thirdly, if there is a discriminatory or illegal reason for the reduction in hours, then it could be grounds for a lawsuit. You would probably need an attorney to determine whether such grounds exist. 555 is correct that under the COBRA laws, an employee is entitled to continue health insurance coverage at the employee's expense. It must be paid for, however, at the group (business) rate and can be a substantial savings over some individual policies. The business is required by law to provide written notice of COBRA eligibility.

Others are no longer in it for the greater good. It's sad but true.

Insurance Woes

2013-01-25 08:43 PM

557 got it right in general, and I'm advising in general:

Sign up and pay for COBRA insurance IMMEDIATELY if you intend to continue or obtain any coverage.

Either consult an employment or insurance atty. or start shopping.

Radiant Heat Electrician

2013-01-25 08:56 PM

I know that Murphy Electric has repaired a ceiling radiant heat system for a former employer's friend and Waterfall Electric has done repairs on the under tile mats.

In my opinion, Nuheat produces good quality and easy to instal radiant floor mats.

If you have an all electric home and the utility will charge upwards of $25k just to bring gas to your neighborhood, will you heat with gas or electric?

An engineer friend of mine prefers electric over gas just because of the fire and CO poisoning potential of gas. He reasons that the cost ends up being about the same anyway.

Good luck to the OP.

Do some online research before contacting a lawyer. You may be eligible for COBRA -- there's California COBRA and a federal version. Some info is available here. http://www.hmohelp.ca.gov/ In the upper right hand search box, type COBRA. Your company's human resources department should have information, also.

Insurance Woes

2013-01-25 10:36 PM

That is a REAL bummer, sorry for you and the stress you must be going through.
COBRA is your best bet. Do not be surprised by what happened though. Health insurance is enormously expensive for companies to provide; it's a common tactic to change employee status to eliminate the obligation to cover it.
In addition to the advice above, and since you are obviously not able to describe all the details here, I suggest keeping a log of all facts, dates, and a file with copies of everything in case you do take action. You are undoubtedly upset at the moment, but keeping track of everything will be of great value, however this goes. Also, gather info on whether this has happened to other people if you end up wanting to prove discrimination. Otherwise, hang on for health reform when we all will have better, more affordable options.

532 very nicely said. So many people are flippant about others' beliefs. I am agnostic but have enjoyed talking with the two JW who have come by my home. We had an open discussion about the human impetus to faith, and the different paths people find. They are polite, respectful and intelligent. I don't feel like making a flippant or disrespectful comment about them and they feel the same way about me even though I do not share their path.

Insurance Woes

2013-01-25 11:31 PM

Cobra is expensive, but perhaps less so than other options. Long term, we all need single payer, because tying insurance to your job is insane. It's just a relic of WWII, and it's past time to move to everyone's insured, and all policies are individual policies. Then, if we can return to the idea of "spread the risk" -- which is what insurance was initially designed to do -- and get rid of "for profit" from insurance... Wow! We might return to improving and paying for health, rather than debating how to enrich yet another legalized betting scam, where the house always decides who wins and loses.

Valley Club Membership

2013-01-25 11:59 PM

OP here. I'm very appreciative of the feedback. I may have written my question unclearly but I wasn't actually expecting to join VC. I simply meant I wouldn't want to join figuratively speaking, were I to learn they had an implicit policy.

I was happy to learn that there apparently is no policy from a couple of comments. I'm satisfied with that and will take it at face value. I also know that VC invites members as opposed to accepting applications.

Again, I wasn't trying to stir the pot, just see if anyone in the edhat realm knew the skinny. I'm glad I asked.

Since it seems we have some non-golfers who are curious about golf or think it's snobby, please let me vouch for it for a moment. Golf is a fantastic game! It isn't just a rich man's sport. Those of us who love the game, can gave a great time playing at Muni or Twin Lakes, Ocean Meadows or Hidden Oaks, all which cost less than seeing a bad movie and have the added merits of letting one burn some calories, and spend time with one's friends/children/grandchildren. Golf in SB is particularly enjoyable in any season. I encourage anyone who is curious to give it a try one of these days. Our public courses are stellar.

As for the private courses. A private course is a luxury and the luxury is being able to venture out and play without booking a time, paying up front, and at the same time allows a player with kids to have all kids under 20 play "free" with him/her. There is an up front expense for sure. But for the price of a sportscar, one can instead join a club, meet a whole group of avid golfers, work on the game, teach it to one's kids and of course have plenty of friends as guests!

Just about every private club has an accommodating policy for younger folks in their 20s-40s to be junior to associate members. This allows them to afford a monthly dues rate without the buy in. I'm sure golf has benefits in business- it certainly has impressed me to see how kids who learn to golf are so much more at ease with adults- can look them in the eye and shake hands and communicate. Those traits, along with working on one's game are great for young people.
