Check out Chait Galleries in Beverly Hills. You will see that they deal in fine ivories. They have a web site.

There are possibly no longer fine shops specializing in what you have in our area.

Don't pay attention to novices who will tell you to bury what you have or that you will get arrested.

Arby's in SB

2013-01-21 07:56 AM

It was where the Nugget is now in the Calle Real strip mall. The location is not that good and there are so many nearby restaurants like the old Carrows (now Denny's) next door and the KFC on the other side and many other fast food outlets in close proximately. Parking was and is terrible all along that strip mall especially since Trader Joe's opened. Those are the main reasons, bad location, poor parking and too much close competition. Actually that store was always neet and clean and local owner operated. He had an old antique car in there for a while, also in immaculate condition. The Arby's menue is the same at all stores and changes periodically like other fast food outlets. Many fans go to the store in Santa Maria when they are there or the one in Ventura at Main and the 101.

9 years ago my wife bought me an SB8BALL license plate because I ran the local 8-ball pool league and that was the name of our website.

I got pulled over twice within one week of putting on the plate. One time CHP followed me as I exited at Turnpike, then pulled me over on Hollister. When he got to my window he apologized, saying that he thought my tags were expired. I think he figured out what SB8BALL meant when he read the "Pool Players Do It On Cue" license plate frame.

Personally, I would skip contacting City Parks and just take care of it myself via "a" or "b".

It's a jungle out there. If you let chickens roam where wild animals can get to them, they are! I would hope the chicken owner wouldn't shoot the cat because of it (although I emphasize with the frustration of losing a hen). Mr. Chicken Owner; could losing 3 chickens be the universes way of telling you the perimeter is not secure?

Is shooting a wild animal illegal? Are bobcats protected in any way?

Bobcat's Chicken Dinner

2013-01-21 10:19 AM

Last year I took a full day workshop from Patricia Foreman, author of City Chicks, a book on keeping backyard chickens. The first thing she told the class was that chickens can't see more than one inch (or so) in front of them in daylight and can't at all in the dark and that is why you must, for their own protection, keep them in a coop at night so that predators won't eat them.

I imagine this is not news to any 9 year-old 4Her! If you don't know this and can't read a book on keeping chickens then you have no business complaining when your backyard becomes a buffet for wildlife.

Bobcat's Chicken Dinner

2013-01-21 10:23 AM

You need a permit to shoot them if they are harassing livestock, so unless he has one, it's illegal. And I know someone who had a bobcat get into their coop (of 20 or so chickens) and killed/severely injured about half. The owners were sad to lose their chickens, which were like pets, but also knew the poor cat was probably terrified after it got stuck inside, what with 20 chickens screaming & flapping around it. Probably thrilled at first, then really freaked out. This was just after one of the fires, and the poor thing probably hadn't eaten in ages. This guy needs to beef up his coop - no reason to complain about losing 3 chickens on separate occasions if he doesn't. Kitty knows a good food source when it sees one. Remove that, and problem is solved.

741 I think you misunderstood or misheard the lecture. Chickens have pretty good distance vision during the day. My kid's preschool had a chicken. That stupid bird would be across the yard and if any kid opened the compost bin, she'd be there faster than a New York minute because she knew someone was getting a worm or slug out of the gore for her. Bird vision is very different than human, doesn't mean it's worse. They actually see more colors than we do. Birds, in general, have much better visual acuity than humans, and that includes chickens.

A .22 isnt going to kill a bobcat quickly unless you hit it right in the head or heart, instead it will suffer for weeks while the infection slowly kills it...

With lawsuit pending, controversial...

2013-01-21 12:14 PM

I get it, but it concerns me. I lived in a 4 bedroom house with 3 other single adult roommates for over a decade. Initially, the neighbors were all concerned about a [grad] student "dorm!" Then, once we moved in and proved to be quiet, considerate, responsible neighbors, they decided we were probably lower impact than a family with kids would have been.

The issue here is Pini's past negligence. I'm sorry for the architect and the neighbors that they're having to worry about this. I know that I would be equally concerned if Pini owned houses in my neighborhood, but I wanted to publicly say that unrelated people renting a house isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Scanner REports 1-21-13

2013-01-21 01:01 PM

Roger, regarding your comments about nursing home complaints, we had a Long Term Care Ombudsman Program in Santa Barbara from the early 80's through the 2010-2011 county fiscal year, when it was funded with $11,852 by the county. Funding for the SB County Long Term Care Ombudsman program was discontinued the following year when the program's director missed a meeting to see a contact/friend in a local nursing home who had attempted suicide that day and wasn't available by phone. This is a program mandated by US and CA law to protect long-term care residents. The current program is operated out of SLO,, the Central Coast Commission on Senior Citizens, who has recently hired a director for SB's LTC Ombudsman program. The local resident and whistleblower arrested while trying to visit his friend at the Via Lucero facility was really the ideal community person to protect residents according to the law. He was arrested by SBPD for trespassing, although residents of nursing homes have the right to have visitors as long as the visitors don't interfere with their care or the facility's operation - they're not inmates, and the facility is supposed to operate as a home as much as possible. SBPD was ignorant of the law, and DA Dudley's office was ignorant of the law and filed trespassing charges against him. http://canhr.org/factsheets/nh_fs/html/fs_outline_resrights.h
tm The new operator of the facility told Finucane he wouldn't be allowed to visit his friend in private, and other people he wanted to visit would need written permission from a family member for him to visit. The law specifically prevents this kind of isolation; it endangers residents by allowing abuse to be hidden, and inhumanely deprives residents of social contact. These actions by SBPD and the DA's office were inexcusable, and the failure of Central Coast Commission on Senior Citizens to intervene demonstrated that residents had not only no protection, but a local government that increased their chances of abuse. People in long-term care aren't necessarily seniors, so the non-profit's name is misleading.
Central Coast Commission for Senior Citizens has scheduled "listening sessions" around the county for input on its draft 4-year plan. Tomorrow, Tuesday, January 22, there's one at 10am at Goleta Senior Center, 5679 Hollister.
The agency is also supposed to provide physically and mentally and developmentally disabled people with legal protection from physical and emotional and financial abuse according to US and CA law, but only serves the developmentally disabled, whose parents form a strong lobby. The sessions are advertised only to seniors, so there probably isn't any input from disabled people on their need for services.

He raped and knifed a girl in a Goleta trailer park in 1974, was jailed, let out and raped again. He is very scary.

His family moved to Santa Maria after that, according to other neighbors. If his family does not want him, why should he be released here as a transient?

I say we stop calling them warming fires, and call them ARSON. Someone who has the wits and intelligence to survive day in and day out living on the street knows full well that setting a fire, let alone near any vegetation, and leaving it without the embers extinguished can turn into an full-fledged blaze.

One more person wanting to kill something. It gets so old.
The biggest idiotic aspect of this is that when you kill ONE of a species, who happens to be a successful hunter, others of the species fill the vacuum. They however may be younger, less careful, more risk-taking, and even more imprudent and aggressive. It is especially true of coyotes. You actually end up with more young, less savvy coyotes being drawn in when you remove one.
Extermination doesn't work. Ace Hardware 2x4s and chicken wire does.

Transient Detained at Butterfly Bea...

2013-01-21 05:09 PM

ok, ONCE AGAIN- There are plenty of towns where one can rent an apartment for a couple hundred bucks a month. SB is one of the most expensive towns in CA. Personally, I worked in SB and lived in Santa Maria for 15 years before I could AFFORD to live here. Is it fair to have vargrants (from all over the US) running all over our town, sleeping, camping, drinking, selling drugs and hassling locals and tourists on freeway offramps and State St. breaking WRITTEN LAWS ON THE BOOKS in the name of political correctness? NO. I, and many of our community members are sick of this situation. The City Attorney, Steve Wiley, needs to work with the DA and SBPD to ENFORCE the LAWS on the books!
The ACLU can go to hell! We need to stand up to these bullies; everyone needs to follow the law or there is chaos-

As an inveterate traveler and with many relatives and friends who fly a lot, the stress of making a trip, the rush of checking in for a flight, being on board a flight in fairly squashed in a fairly sedentary position, with little exercise, then landing and heading towards baggage claim and onwards - it's hard on the heart. More than a few relatives and friends have been hit by heart attacks or Deep Vein Thrombosis within hours or days of a flight.

It's unfortunate that SBPD's new dash cams weren't chosen for full-time recording like this and need to be turned on by officers, although the rear camera and the mic that can record voices from 150' away allow surveillance of people when they believe they're not in public view or able to be overheard by others.

Vegetation Fire Extinguished

Yea it wasn't cold to you, you have a nice cozy home, a bed, blankets, possibly a heater, probably a hot shower, and access to a warm meal every night. These guys have to sleep out in the cold, exposed to the elements. Some of them don't even have blankets or a sleeping bag. Their camps get cleared out by cops, and their few belongings stolen by other homeless types. So I find it unsurprising that a poor guy would wasn't a warm fire. They have them in or near vegetation so they can stay out of view from the police. And no one bats an eye at all the college kids throwing bonfire parties on the beach, too drink probably to put out their own fires, our to dumb to realize that they even need to. And those fires are right under the bluffs, out on them in some places, very close to vegetation.

A legal battle to keep a convicted ...

2013-01-21 08:18 PM

It's extremely complicated, as most issue are. I just finished an article in the New Yorker of 1/14/13 about the civil commitment of a sexual offender, and offenders in general.

No, I don't want the guy around. Yes, the US has and may commit/jail individuals past the serving of their sentences for what crimes they may commit.

Just food for thought, not flaming OR TAKING SIDES. Look into both sides and learn.

This is an issue of philosophy and justice; an issue within the daily life of our and any community. I view it as physics (community and real life) and metaphysics (does the US want to commit people for what they may do.) I'm loathe to say "physics" VERSUS "metaphysics" and I'm sorry I can't come up with a better analogy.

Reminds me of the torture/waterboarding debate. It is a matter more of principal, in my view, than detail.

But then I say: No, I don't want this person released, anywhere, of course. But I believe in American freedoms and ideals.... Round and round and round.

No knee jerk reaction here; simply puzzlement and head-banging. Nor will I debate the issue. I continue to debate it in my own mind.

Topics for research, if you have time and interest:

civil commitment sexual offenders
therapeutic confinement
US v Comstock Supreme Court
Adam Walsh Child Protection Safety Act
American Psychiatric Association + civil commitment sexual offenders
forensic psychology + pedophilia, child pornography, sexual offender
Butner study
Butner Federal Correctional Institute
National Sentencing Resource Project

Maybe I should say ethics in the Aristotelian, meta-, philosophical sense versus laws in the local sense?
And point out that no politician can oppose laws supporting heavy sentencing when the country is up in arms about the issue. Like mandatory drug sentencing guidelines put into place in the 80's.

Still working on that "physics" versus "metaphysics" analogy.

Loma Alta-Tv Hill Fire

I don't find the site nasty at all. It is professionally run and the nanny does a good job keeping things more civil. Only thing I find occasionally nasty are individuals whom choose to post insulting comments now and then, but that certainly isn't the site's fault, now is it.

They'll ask for the publics help in two weeks after they cant figure it out themselves, then Sanchez will blame it on the realignment.

973P here. I agree the site is very well-moderated. I pay because it's worth it. It's still gotten nasty. I have emailed EDitors about a few posts that I considered extremely bad; they are wonderfully responsive. I've clicked a few negative buttons. Do you read every thread, 978P? I do. (My OCD is another issue!) It gets nasty and I'm not the only one to complain about it. It is my problem. Anyone can speak. If I could only just read and not post.... I'm working on impulse control. I'll print this and tape it to my computer to remind me to shut up. That will definitely help.
Very sorry for the thread jack.
