Sunset Splash

2012-12-27 10:57 PM

Many do not believe in the flash which occurs after some sunsets but not all. Here are a few tips which will help you get to see one.

The athmosphere must be clear. Possibly a little crisp or cool.

Look down from a hill overlooking the horizon and to get the flash on film use a video camera and start shooting just before the sun sets. Keep the camera shooting until you either see the flash or until the sun has set and no flash has appeared this particular evening. Not every Sunset will show a flash but many will and I can vouch that they do exist.

730p Public schools are private property....not community property. You would be amazed at how many neighbors feel it is their right to walk their dogs and let them crap all over the campus,.....only students/parents and staff are entitled to be on the campuses. The gates are locked due to vandalism and safety concerns, because it is private property!

On the Road Again

I took my daughter to the industrial complex next to goleta valley cottage hospital off hollister. It has lots of space to go, and very very few people on the weekends. You can park, drive, turn, and practice the finer points of driving there. All safely and without people. You could also contact Sunshine Driving School, John is excellent, and does an adult program for seasoned drivers, getting back into it. He is out of Ojai, but comes to SB/goleta for the classes. A super nice guy, really knowlegeable, and just cool to be around. It might be nice to have a nonfamily member help out with this, to relieve some of the tension (if needed).

I taught both my sons to use a stick-shift in the Santa Barbara High School parking lot on Sundays many years ago. It wouldn't surprise me if that lot weren't gated and locked on weekends these days, though. San Marcos High also has a few pretty large lots that might be available on weekends.

I'd also guess that the Costco parking lot might be good in the early morning hours, before Costco opens at 10 a.m.

Good luck!! I'm sure your hubby will do fine.

Strange Bird

2012-12-27 08:30 PM

The angle of the photo distorts the look of the bird if you are unfamiliar with them. We have one of the few areas where this species breeds. The young are brown and streaked - different plumage, but same basic silhouette. These birds eat, fish, frogs, mice, etc, and make a characteristic "quok!" vocalization.

Watch those Discover and AE deals carefully. I was going to park some money at Discover until I read the fine print and saw that there was no guarantee that the rate would stay at the advertised level for a significant length of time. According to the terms, they could drop it to 0.01% immediately after setting up the account. I'm sure AE is the same. Best CD rate I found at the time (last year) was 2% for 5 year $100k min deposit "mega" CDs.

The whole purpose (well, part of it) of the fed keeping rates low is to dissuade people from sitting on their money. Saving money doesn't drive the economy. Spending it does. Investing it does. The low rates make saving money unattractive and borrowing money attractive. So spend spend spend! Invest invest invest!

Suicide Attempt

2012-12-27 07:28 PM

It never fails does it? It can't just be a story about someone helping someone else, it has to be torn apart. Well, as the parent of someone who was once suicidal and didn't know why, who was then taken to cottage hospital on a hold, and transferred to Vista Del Mar, and subsequently diagnosed with a mood stability disorder, and is now doing great, I appreciate those who intervene and help those who feel so helpless. My child was a minor. Maybe its different for minors. Everyone we came into contact with, (granted we didn't have contact with law enforcement), was helpful, and guided us in the direction we needed. I am thankful there are people like this officer, and I truly hope this man finally got the help he needed.

My number 1 charity is Direct Relief International (DRI) primarily because every penny goes where it is needed with no administrative costs. Plus, because of their relationships with Pharmaceutical houses, etc. every dollar you donate is leveraged into over $25.00 worth of medicines and medical supplies. They get to disasters of every kind around the world and here at homea nd do incredible work. Then, of course, Animal Shelter Assistance Program (ASAP) for cats. Recently, I've been thinking a lot about volunteering at the Organic Soup Kitchen and may soon decide to send some money their way. Just some suggestions.

This last baby season was extremely overwhelming with the number of Pelicans they had to take care of and has taken it's toll on their funds. I would highly recommend them and know that they are working very hard and long hours to take care of the many animals they have on site. Your donation would be greatly appreciated by them.

As a graduate of and volunteer for Women's Economic Ventures, I highly recommend them. WEV provides self-employment training and technical support to women and men starting businesses. They also offer ongoing support programs, a small business loan program, business consulting and more. Hundreds of businesses throughout the Tri-Counties have gotten started with the help of WEV, including mine.

You can't go wrong supporting our local no-kill animal shelters, ASAP for cats and DAWG for dogs.

ASAP: The mission of the Animal Shelter Assistance Program (ASAP) is to eliminate the killing of adoptable cats impounded at the Santa Barbara County Animal Shelter by providing daily care, medical rehabilitation and adoptive homes.

DAWG: Our primary goal is to reduce the rate of euthanasia in Santa Barbara County shelters by providing the medical care and training many dogs need for a second chance at life.

In my opinion both AA and Alanon can be dangerous because of their cult like methodology. I'd look before getting involved with either of them.

They seem helpful at first but foster extreme dependency. They engage in "love bombing" to get you hooked and then convince you that their way is the only way, preferably every night of the week.

I am a survivor of these organizations as my family was very involved with these organizations.

Another vote for Al-Anon, and yes, try some different meetings to find one that fits for you. If you believe in a god/higher power, you'll feel right at home. BUT EVEN IF YOU DON'T, give it a chance. As they say of what you hear in meetings: take what you like and leave the rest. Best of luck to you, it is very hard to live with a practicing alcoholic. But many members of Al-Anon continue to do so, and are able to find peace and happiness.

Unless you park your money long term, there is no such thing as interest on savings any longer. If you want long term interest, consider buying into a municipal bond (many are insured, AAA rated) or a bond fund, if you need liquidity. Some are closed end funds which you can purchase just like stocks and yield much higher interest than you will earn on savings accounts held at a bank.

Savings Account Interest

2012-12-27 04:21 PM

Try a money market account with Vanguard, Fidelity, or one of the others. I think Vanguard is paying .03 right now. Not sure about the others. When interest rates on loans are low, the interest paid is even lower. The business has to make a profit. Certificates of Deposits are better I think, but the money is tied up for a period of time. The longer it is tied up for, the higher the rate. Still might be a good solution. Ask around at different banks and credit unions.

Traffic Accident

2012-12-27 03:59 PM

618 - yeah, that's true but, when a pedestrian walks out in front of a moving car then right of way doesn't really matter does it? Sometimes it is physically too late for the car to stop. Sorry, but it happens. I really don't think any drivers are out there intimidating pedestrians or willfully trying to hit them. The problem lies with peds and cyclists who think that because the have the right of way, a 2000 pound machine can stop on a dime.

LOOK before you walk into traffic - SIMPLE.

True what 646 said.. If you are not satisfied with one group, search out the others. You need encouragement, strength and hope. I would also suggest going down to the Central Office of AA and look at some of the literature and schedules of meetings. There are also Co-dependent and Ala-teen meetings in town. And you will hear honesty at AA meetings, and some are open to non AA people, such as yourself.

We followed the ancient debris flow through the Santa Barbara parks system starting at Rattlesnake Park, down through Skofield Park and Rocky Nook. If you haven't explored the parks in this sequence, you'll be amazed at the rich geological history. Skofield contains about 50 very large boulders (named and rated for climbers). As the flow continued to what is now Rocky Nook Park, it left behind piles of smaller boulders (but still quite large!) stacked in amazing arrays. As you continue through the SB parks system along the mudflow toward the ocean, the boulders continue to break up, creating unique character in each of the parks.

Three solutions:

3) Relocate the school to a more accessible area that can handle the traffic the school creates (the old Army Reserve Building is available at Las Positas & State)

While there are personnel at the LPNF office in Goleta, staff has taken the time to build a website full of information for forest users pertinent to each of the individual districts, to more efficiently use taxpayer dollars re: inquiries. The front page has a *closure alert* box for any closures within the district.

It may not feel as convenient as calling and talking to a live person, but going to the website can be quite informative, well beyond the basic information you might be seeking. Look around the website, then call your local office, but expect to leave a voice mail/receive a return call.

Bookmark it and visit often! ;-) http://www.fs.usda.gov/lpnf.

Truthfully, if they're more than a few years old, it's very unlikely that a school will have any use for them. Publishers issue "updates" almost every year now (yes, it's a bit of a scam) and, especially in science-related subjects, textbooks become outdated very quickly. It's why there are so many textbooks (not to mention encyclopedia sets) out there that no one really wants. That being said, SBPL takes most books and then resells them cheaply to raise funds for new purchases.
May be your best bet if you're reluctant to toss/recycle them.

Not trying to be negative, but am in the book/library "business."

Common courtesy by both parties is a start but this is almost non existent now a days. I know there are laws to stop at crosswalks when there is a pedestrian at the corner, but it doesn't mean that someone driving a car is 100% going to stop.

My advice is not to start walking until the car/s stop!

And there is still no traffic light or stop sign where junior high students and their chauffeur parents cross on Foothill to get to and from La Colina Junior High. As said before, the intersection where this traffic accident occurred is safer than most places on this stretch of Foothill Road. A bike ride, hike, beach walk, swim, or surf -- some outside, active activity -- along with the final sunset, sharing memories, and welcoming in the new year have been decades long NYE traditions for me, which I'm happy to share with others.

Bug ID

Interesting how even such a mundane subject as a potatoe bug can be turned into a political discussion on this forum...

They can and do bite with powerful jaws built like ice tongs. Very hard to make them let go.

I watched some rural types search for them in a vacant lot, found a couple under some old boards, tied strings around them, set up a carboard box with one end up at an angle with the potatoe bug tied to the stick, ran a long string to their car about 50 feet away, and within 1/2 hour they had caught a red tailed hawk... The hawk got loose when they peeked in the box. True story.

here we go again!

Ok, I know I'm going to get flak for this but, honestly, the drivers here aren't THAT bad - I've seen worse. The problem is the entitlement attitude that most residents espouse. I see pedestrians constantly walk out in front of moving cars without even pausing (go to any Trader Joe's parking lot for this one) and also bicyclists running stop signs and redlights CONSTANTLY. Are there bad drivers? Yes! But I have NEVER seen drivers blow through stop signs and redlights with the frequency that cyclists do.

And the "entitled" pedestrians who just walk out into traffic (many times with their kids in tow or in strollers) thinking the world stops for them.

Me? When I ride, I stop. When I walk, I look. When I drive, I watch out contsantly for pedestrians, cyclists and other motorists not paying attention.

And now, I'm done.

Foothill and La Cumbre Accident

How come someone always blames Janet Wolf everytime there is accident in town? Does she really have that much power that she can make each and every intersection in the city a "safe" one? I kind of doubt it.....

560- It doesn't seem that complicated. The Edhat rules are basically, don't be a jerk. You could always upgrade to support a community resource you appear to frequently enjoy.

But that's off-topic, I agree with the consensus, they're probably on vacation or out of the office.

Give me snakes, lizards, spiders . . . anything but a potato bug or a regular cricket. Gives me the shudders just to think of them. My sister-in-law almost had a spell when she found a potato bug nestled among her clothes in her ironing basket. How did he get in the house??? This was on the west side on Arrellaga in the '70's.

Live undergound and move slowly. They do not leap like crickets and are commonly called "potato bugs" for these reasons. (e.g. "couch potato", etc.) Mostly harmless and non-agressive but very ugly.

I love the stories of fun and experience. Not to fond of those of you who, in almost every article, perpetuate stories of death, fear and misery. These potato bugs are nearly the most harmless bug in your yard. There's nothing to fear and they do a great job of gardening, tilling and processing decay in your garden. It's life people.

Foothill and La Cumbre Accident

2012-12-27 08:07 AM

I heard a report on this last night on my way home on KJEE. I often drive that way on my way home and even though there is a light people speed around the corner from Foothill onto La Cumbre. I have also had individuals pass me on La Cumbre heading towards Foothill. Apparently 35 is just not fast enough for some people. Hope everyone is okay.

The brevity of the accident report leads to much speculation and confusion. Is traffic backed up? Is the accident interfering with traffic flow at all? Is it a grizzly enough crash that lookie loos should consider taking a run over there? Curious minds crave to know more.

@527P Potato bugs and a great many species of spiders will "play dead," in the hope that you will lose interest and leave them be.

@462 Thank you for all the great info. Much appreciated.

@464 Please don't share any more such stories. You made me feel very sorry for all the innocent creatures you killed. When we were kids, we were taught "You don't bother it, it won't bother you." I hope that now you would put any such tent visitors outside. Poor little potato bugs.
