Seedlady, I cherish the gorgeous black enameled, painted and inlaid with mother of pearl chopsticks that I inherited. And wow, yes, are they hard to eat with! (There is a middle ground, or even a fork; I hate the waste of throw-away chopsticks.)

As I learned at age 13, reading Castaneda, death is always at your left shoulder, as Don Juan says, so live each day as if it's your last. (Regardless of Castaneda's reputation, the first 2 or 3 books are good compendiums of world spirituality and philosophy. And hey, we were all teens once, right? Doors of Perception, anyone? :-)) Another lovely work, Brian.

44P: Yes, it has happened before and been reported here at least three or four times, so who knows how many other falls there have been. It's way overdue to have a fence there. This is a dog park and the dogs are not safe. A broken back must have been very painful! Agreeing with 043, a fence would be worth it: how many dogs dying or being injured is needed? When is the city going to do something about this?

Maybe in coming days we can start a thread to address this PROFOUND safety risk. This is happening too frequently. It is not OK. Can't think of anywhere else I've lived where this happens so regularly in one place. Sorry to digress; for now, all that matters is supporting the owner during their time of loss, and thanking those who lent support. Peace to you.

It doesn't need much of a sign, name or designation, as it's been closed for several years. The local battalion deployed Oct. 2008, and the unit was relocated to the San Fernando valley. It's surprisingly hard to find news about the closure (or my Google fu is worthless), but there's this: http://www.independent.com/news/2009/jul/30/man-towns/ July 30, 2009 "CITY’S EYE ON THE PRIZE: The sprawling Army Reserve center at State Street and Las Positas Road stands empty, waiting for the City of Santa Barbara and the State of California to work out a deal to make it city property. “They started at $20 million and the city at $8 million,” ... “We’d probably have to pass a bond issue” to acquire the site ..." It's a fluke such a large tract of land has remained un developed so close to an urban area along the coast in SoCal. Expecting it to remain so is ever so slightly delusional. Expecting the county to fork out $25Mil for a chunk of land that won't return anything but more expense? Really? Personally I love the idea the new Saudi owners develop the land for a Muslim center and mosque.

A request, please: why confine the wine experience to customary drinking hours? Some of us like to get started early. We all know about mimosas, but what wine goes well with Rice Krispies? (No, not to pour on them, just as an aperitif). Would a nice zin complement chorizo and eggs? I sometimes like a Bacardi & Coke with my oatmeal, but if I'm dining out I don't want to appear to be that anxious to get the party rolling, so I wonder if a cabernet might be more in order? Thank you for any advice. Christmas Brunch is coming up and I want to show my relatives that I do have class.

It isn't that they are better intrinsically ... either party can be rational and have valid beliefs or not. On the subject of tolerance, google "projection", "tu quoque", and "hypocrisy", dear.

Online, I was able to find Net Income (Loss) information for USPS by year, starting in 1972. Although the losses have become much larger in the past several years, the pre-funding requirement is NOT the major culprit. Rather, it has been a sharp decline in customer use of USPS services for other than 1st Class Mail, where it enjoys no competition. st Class Mail has taken a hit, due to the exponential growth of email for many such communications that formerly were handled by 1st Class service. For all other types of mail service, the competition from UPS and FedEx has taken more and more such business away from the Postal Service, to the point where revenues no longer support an operation of such size. In fact, in 1976, the USPS had a net revenue loss for the year of just about $1 Billion. And most years since 1972 they have shown losses, NOT net income. You can look this up for yourself at http://wwwDOTflickrDOTcom/photos/usgao/5371005812/lightbox/ The Postal Act of 2006 came in the wake of a number of record-breaking profitable years for the USPS. The decline in gross revenues actually escalated AFTER the act was passed. Should Congress do something to reverse this negative financial performance? It would be better than allowing things to continue as they have, but we all need to face the fact that the likely future of Postal Service in America, is one of further downsizing, and closing of facilities, NOT expansion.

It is a great event and I am happy to support anything that helps kids lead a healthy life. Sadly, this was the wrong time and place. The event is causing a traffic nightmare getting into/out of the parking lot at Trader Joe's. Between the fire truck and police car parking on opposing sides of the street, the normal three lanes is barely 1.5. Next year they should do it the week before.

And which percent uses a disproportionate amount of public infrastructure--airports, communications, security for their banks and houses (including army and national guard, like this armory), paving for their roads, public utility lines for the water for their lawns, fuel for their vehicles, education for the people who toil to make the goods and services that are the foundation for their wealth, etc. Bill Gates' father said it: without all of that, no microsoft. The full version of Obama's much maligned quote "... You didn't make that..." was right on the mark.

To what do you refer when you say "... because of an unreasonable burden imposed on it by the same party that wants to destroy Medicare..." The postal act that set up this current situation was supported virtually unanimously by BOTH parties. "http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z? d109:HR06407:@@@P So, both republicans and democrats sponsored this bill. The bill passed in the House of Representatives by voice vote. - a record of each representative’s position was not kept. 961, where do you get the idea that the wealthy don't pay for their share of the governments' expenses? It isn't a mystery, it's been in the news a lot, the top 5% of income earners pay 58.7% of the taxes paid and the top 1% pay 36.7% (2009). The bottom 50% pay 2.3%. Almost half of all taxpayers pay no income tax at all.

Gee, these tidbits are certainly more important than mental health care and housing or drug intervention programs that allow for the care of patients for the length of time needed to get success or decent schools with serious advanced programs and options for those who use public institutions or health care for the poor or dental care for the people who have no access to these services or .... The things you list are the elegant desserts but not the meat of the thing. Nice to have but the price we pay is to excuse wealth from its responsibility to pay for the less glamorous and less "uplifting" stuff while they get fame and tax write offs for their proclaimed "virtue". It is a bad deal for the general public.

Actually Monarch butterflies love Pine trees and congregate in many Pine Groves. I was always lead to believe that Pines are there first tree of choice. Regardless they will migrate to any forest which has the right combination of comfort and warmth for over the winter. Has anyone found out how far they migrate? I saw them doing studies at the Monarch preserve in Goleta. I have heard many different answers. Perhaps they are all correct.

Of course taxpayers do pay for the USPS, and get more value than they pay for and certainly better bang for the buck than anything they get from the private sector ... as is the case with most government services. (Consider that the internet, many pharmaceuticals, and many other technologies we value were primarily developed in universities via government grants.) And RHS, 356938P, et. al. are correct about why USPS is in trouble ... because of an unreasonable burden imposed on it by the same party that wants to destroy Medicare by turning it into a voucher system or any other way they can and who blackmailed the U.S. with a threat not to raise the debt ceiling, leading to the "fiscal cliff" that they are now trying to use as leverage.

Hydrant systems a designed to sheer off without damaging underground piping like you thought 888. Great show called " how it's made " had a segment on hydrants. If you are familiar with where the hydrant is, there is no reasonable cause for a car to smash into it. These past two people area idiots, that's it. And cage the hydrant? So then there will be a smashed cage to try and remove next time? Or so protected that the fire department can't access it easily? Poles right in front will probably be installed, so next car will get crushed befor the hydrant gets touched. Still, these people are idiots, for hitting it, and running after

902, you actually have it wrong. We do. We just don't pay for it as much as people think or for the reasons people think. Around $90 million dollars per YEAR are given from taxes to the USPS by Congress. It's called the US Postal Fund. They do this in part for the purpose of helping offset the costs of free governmental postage programs like free braille mail for the blind or those postage paid election ballots, etc. But some politicians claim the money they get far exceeds their actual costs incurred. Hard to tell. One thing that's for sure is that the USPS itself is 100% tax exempt, they never pay the government.

@936P - Apparently the local citizens can't and don't pay for desirable community needs. If it weren't for the wealthy, most of our nonprofits would dry up and blow away. As for "tidbits" here's a few things that quickly come to mind - the Granada Performing Arts Center, Douglas Preserve, Elings Park, City College West campus, the Sea Center, the open park land of East Beach, the Bird Refuge, Cottage Hospital, Peabody Stadium and the Cabrillo Pavilion Arts Center.

356810 - the Post Office mess started in **2006**.before the congress changed hands. In the history of the US nothing as egregious has been imposed on ANY business, private or not. Then in 2006, Congress forced the post office to start prefunding its benefits for retiree health care on a schedule designed to reach full funding in 10 years. Now, the Postal Service is supposed to put about $8 billion a year toward retiree health care. Understanding the PO mess Hopefully this mess can be fixed in the next 4 years. Citizens should be outraged - but it is quite clear that very few know what is going on. This started in ** 2006 **.

The idea that we have to rely on "wealthy philanthropists" to fund desireable community needs is sad. The local citizens can pay for these sort of improvements if we stopped catering to the super rich and then kissing their hand when they throw us tidbits back.

905, in fairness, depending on what time you dropped off the packages vs their pick up times, it could be considered three days, not four. Despite what they advertise and charge for, the 2 day priority isn't guaranteed in 2 days, it's 2-3 days. Which is frustrating. I think your stuff will likely be delivered okay, tomorrow. I hope so anyway!

The post office is in trouble mainly because conservative members of Congress passed a law requiring them to put aside revenue to prefund retirement benefits for 75 year! This is an extraordinary burden that no private corporation is required to reach nor is social security, for example. In addition this had to be done in 10 years starting in 2006. The cost of setting aside this much revenue has led to "losses" but the actual service is making money but for this burden. Congress should let up on this and either shorten the prefund time or give them a bigger window. The USPO is established in our Constitution. It serves an important role in democracy and the attempts to gut it are unhealthy for this country.

Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rage at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night. Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Dominican Republic, my home away from home. Friendly, courteous people, reasonably priced hotels (am staying at ocean view hotel part of the Marriott chain, kinda needs updating, but $90 including full breakfast.) There are street festivals, a lightheartedness, innocent, upbeat music, people who are surprisingly formal - rarely does one see ripped or saggy pants, no flip flops or even shorts other than the beach. The country has its dark side, but from the dozens of countries I've visited, it's one of the happiest places. The music is often a mixture of Motown and merengue and uninhibited seems to be an unknown word in their vocabulary and thinking. In comparison I'm a "Paraguayo" a wall flower. Excellent people watching.

801, you are correct in that the USPS is an independent establishment of the executive branch, controlled by Presidential appointees and the Postmaster General. But when they have a budget shortfall, which seems to be every year (like this year $5B), they go to congress (i.e. taxpayers) to make up the difference.

@TOPCATHAT - I think that your statement, "We atheists are gaining in population because of evolving, intelligent people- yay !" Seems to show the typical Atheist belief that you are superior to others or more intelligent than others because of your belief in "reason" and not "superstition". However when you take on this attitude you are no better than the religious folk who believe in their superiority to non-believers. Some of the most intelligent, well-educated, scientific minds I have known in my life personally are also church-going folk. Some of the biggest, most-backwards people I've met are atheists. It works both ways dear. Show some more tolerance because at the end of the day, that's what matters most.

Broken Fire Hydrant |
2012-12-23 07:32 AM |
|
I wonder if the mounting bolts were recently changed out with drilled bolts. These bolts are meant to hold the hydrant in place but shear off off it is struck by a vehicle. The point is not to damage the pipe and flange in the ground, so repair is fast and the hydrant is not out of service for long. It may be that this hydrant has been hit before, but was more solidly affixed than it is now.

Arroyo Hondo Preserve Guided Hikes |

Arroyo Honda is a wonderful piece of California history, having been occupied by Chumash, Spanish, Mexicans, and Anglos - but always as a ranch. The year round creek makes it a wonderful rich habitat for plants, birds, animals, and fish, incl. Steelhead. It's a special place to see and just "to be."

Mesa Post Office Closed |

Sad - I loved that litte post office. Hopefully, they'll find a new location on the Mesa. BTW - you now have to go online to USPS.com and fill out customs forms online, print and pay for your own labels to send overseas. Not a hard thing, once you get the hang of it. I sent all my international mail and gifts thru that little P. O. just a couple weeks ago. I used those fixed rate boxes - WAY cheaper than UPS.

The facility appears to be vacated and the grounds are not being maintained (at least the lawn is not being mowed like before). I believe that City parks was going to take back the space . . .

Miramar Progress |
2012-12-23 02:28 AM |

I grew up in the late 1950's. To me, it is a tragedy that the old Miramar, is disappearing. This was the American vacation resort lifestyle of the immediate postwar era, and as such, deserved to be preserved. Had it been me, as opposed to Mr. Profiteer Caruso, I would have purchased the property on the premise, and after determining feasibility of a complete RESTORATION, of the existing buildings. My focus would have been on restoring everything to be as close as possible to the original design, furnishings, fittings, etc, while having the functionality of a more modern facility.

New Laws for Motorists |

I just learned this and was wondering how many other people know about it. There is a "box" in my car that gathers data on the way that I drive. I asked at the dealership about it and they claimed that the data it collects is downloaded by them and used them as a aid to repairing the car. Now, I live in a neighborhood where there are alot of turns to be made and when I am out and there is no one to see my turn signal I don't signal. This little box makes a note of that. So, if I am involved in a accident that involves making a turn, they can, but they claim that they don't, use the information previously recorded to point out that in regular driving (thru the neighborhood), I don't use my turn signal. They also record hard stops, fast acceleration, and speeds over 70 mph.
