@276P: You remember correctly about the cylindrical nickel scoops of ice cream at Thrifty's. You could get a cone with a maximum of three scoops for the princely sum of 15 cents. And there were two Thrifty's in the 800 block of State Street within two doors of each other. Of course the sidewalk outside Thrifty's was always a syrupy sea of spilled ice cream. The sidewalk was hosed down early every morning, but nothing could get rid of the goo. (Can you imagine what that would be like today, with the ice cream mess coagulating with the effluent from the vagrants?)

And kudos for spelling "sherbet" correctly. If I had a nickel for every time I've heard someone say "sherbert," I'd have enough Thrifty's ice cream cones to stack to the top of the KIST tower atop the neighboring Balboa Building.

Note that Edna Ludang got Ward Kimball (class of '32) to sign her book in the upper right corner. Ward Kimball went on to become a well-known cartoonist with Walt Disney. My mother was in his class. I have a picture of one of the 1932 class reunions -- in the 50's I think -- in which Ward is being quite the cut-up.

REXOF SB. Thanks for the bit about the music booths. I was asking about them just the other day.

267P. At Thrifty's the wafer cones were 5¢ a scoop and the scoops were cylindrical (or so I remember). There were 1/2 gallon cartons of orange, lime and raspberry sherbet. We used to buy the Neapolitan 1/2 gallons. Ah . . . Such sweet memories. (Orange sherbet with Hershey's chocolate sauce. Yum.)

The gunman was 20, still a kid himself in ways- messed up. Mentally ill, perhaps. Way jealous of his mother's time spent with other kids, perhaps. Whacked out for sure. A young man raised in a society where young boys have too much access to violence: video games, movies, tv,music, internet, porn... In addition to gun control or not, there needs to be a conversation about the effects of our pop culture on America's youth. This is a tragedy of epic porportions.

@248P: Montgomery Ward was at State & Figueroa, where Bank of the West is now.

Also a go-to place for phonograph records was H.T. Bennett Music Co., next-door to Trenwith's and the Children's Shop near State & Canon Perdido. Bennett's had several glassed-in booths where you could listen to records before deciding if you wanted to buy them.

Hunt's would provide quality, free gift wrapping. I can still visualize the wide rolls of wrapping paper on a spool and the saleswoman who had finesse and class with clients. Most of the shops downtown seemed to have older, experienced employees. These days it's mostly college age kids which is ok, but they don't have decades of experience with the products. At Christmas time the trees on East Carrillo Street were brightly strung with lights; it looked festive. The trees are much larger now. I remember in the late 1960's on one Christmas Day, the Thrifty's Drug store was open. It seemed unusual for a store to be open on that day. That Thrifty's usually had untidy aisles, but good prices and was it 5 or 10 cent ice cream cones?

After Christmas time I Magnin's had their quality soaps on sale, one had an oatmeal look and texture. The elevator which only went up one floor had a wide bench so the dowagers could rest while ascending or descending to and from the first floor.
More to my budget was Andera's, down near Figueroa Street, but nothing special or Christmaslike is remembered there. Definitely Bob Gervasoni's floral shop was impressive at Christmas, that tall ceiling area was a perfect setting for a beautiful tree. I can't remember what the building was before built for Gervasoni's shop, but it was a new building when Gervasoni moved in.

MESARATS - I agree, ideally we have to deal with the root cause of this accelerating gun violence. I don't have much hope for that, as we can't deal with much of anything anymore, as life races by, and we don't have much time to think things through these days, and therefore most people just react to each moment without much foresight or vision (those take time to come up with).

"Twisted people will find a way to kill guns or no guns."

So true, but all I can say in response is that if fewer people have guns, fewer people get killed. Can we agree on that? It's quite logical if you think about it.

And I would love to know where to get some of that potpourri that Back Street used to have. It would be nice to smell that scent again. It really made the store.

The saleswomen, so refined, were at each other like cats and dogs, since they worked on commission. I was "stock & clean-up" girl (my first paycheck) at age 15 1/2. $1.35 per hour.

It's horrible what happened, I've cried a few times today for the loss of life, for the trauma of the kids that lived and for the families, I just don't understand how a person could do such a thing. It's true what they say though, guns don't kill people, it's crazy people shooting at other people that kill people. How do you stop someone who is crazy from doing this type of thing? Sadly madmen always find a way. And yes, I said MEN because it is not something that is typically done by a woman. I would say that metal detectors should be at all schools but not all schools are set up in a way that it's a possibility. There is no easy solution and it makes me so incredibly sad.

We clearly cannot arm the teachers... what if someone gets their gun? Or the teacher gets frustrated & snaps and shoots on a whim? Or the teacher can't get to the gun because it's locked up securely and they don't have time to get to it before their head is blown off? No easy solutions to crazy people :(

School Safety

Arm the teachers? What makes anyone think the teachers want to be stuck with having to provide armed security, with everything THAT entails, on top of everything they already do? If it's going to come to that, the kids might as well just stay home. Or arm the students? Each and every one, no matter what age? If you aren't old enough to pack a gun, stay home? There are 3rd world countries where little kids are armed....of course, they're all dysfunctionally psychotic before they ever become adults (if they live that long), but so what? They can shoot back!
Get real--if the schools need protection, then it's up to the police (and therefore the communities and taxpayers) to provide the protection. Arming the teachers is a knee-jerk response that very few teachers are going to go along with.

Agree with 192. Guns used to be very easy to obtain and shipped through the mail, but the mass shootings and random acts of gun violence were rare. Now in CA to buy a riffle, you need ID,finger printing and a two week waiting period. As kids, our exposure to media violence was mostly stuff like Godzilla, Gunsmoke and war reporting on the news Sunday evenings and the rest of the time we were playing outside. Loot at the stuff that is available to them now. There also used to be more services and housing for the mentally ill who could not be cared for by family. Guns are a tool, but the question is what the root of the problem? Twisted people will find a way to kill guns or no guns. Just ask Timothy McVeigh.

I don't own a gun its not my thing but not against others owning them. I am a little off put by all the gun control comments here though, looking at the numbers homicides by guns is about the same as DUI Deaths so should we ban alcohol also? The argument about responsible vs irresponsible users could be made for those who use either product. If you carry the thought even further auto accidents kill more directly than either guns or alcohol so ...

Schools have adopted measures to deal with this horrific type of activity but its pretty much impossible to stop a madman unless you are lucky in a free society.

Yesterday, the Michigan State Senate passed a law making it easier for people to receive gun permits and it also opens up the "gun free zones" - meaning guns could be carried in these "zones" - including schools. Today - after the massacre - some members of the Michigan House demanded that the governor sign the bill. That's how nutty we have become.

Personally I don't own guns but I support the right to own guns. These mass shootings are terrible. But yanking all the guns wouldn't work and no one would stand for it. Only the criminals would have guns then and they don't buy them at a store.

We live in a militaristic culture, are involved in 30 plus wars all over the planet, manufacture and sell more weapons than anyone in the world, bomb more civilians than anyone. The gun culture is a part of this story. I think we should have sensible gun laws, who needs an AK-47? Nobody. Pistol, shotgun, rifle OK. Assault weapons, no.

Florida just issued their millionth concealed carry permit. We'll see if that reduces crime. Same in Texas. And how about violent video games, TV shows and movies? We feed this stuff to our kids all day every day.

Let's just send a lot of love to those people in Connecticut, and then enact some sensible gun control laws.

Everyone is speaking of gun control and arming teachers but the gun didn't shoot on it's own. A very mentally ill person behind the gun went and shot those children and adults. As another poster said mental illness shows signs and those people need help, not only for themselves but for the safety of those around them. Yes people snap, but there are warning signs. A mentally ill person without a gun will find another weapon, maybe even make a bomb, they aren't in their right mind. No one in their right mind would kill like this. Stop cutting mental health services because those cuts don't just affect the "handouts" people complain about, it protects the innocent! Funny how until it affects you, you don't see the importance.

This is beyond the pale. You know, I can almost understand why a teenager being bullied or shunned might kill the people he thinks wronged him, but this guy killed little kids. If I understand the circumstancs, he used handguns, not an assault weapon firing on automatic. With a handgun, he had to aim at each child when he shot them. And I believe there was no one wounded. Everyone he shot at, he killed. The man was clearly psychotic, suffering a psychotic break, but there had to be some indicators. Someone knew this guy was wacko.

I have been told by some of our military that they would never attack US citizens if commanded, because they realize it would be a suicide mission dealing with the most well armed citizens in the world. And more importantly by the way our foriegn adversaries have this same view to. This shooter in Conn could have easily thrown a stick of dynamite into the room or waited outside with his car and then plowed into as many people as he could when school got out. I have heard the shooter had mental issues. reminds me of David Attias who plowed through a crowd in I.V. killing something like 4 people and severely injuring 4. He just got released from a mental instituition and is a free man.

There are many pros and cons to this idea, but there are enough people who are also homeschooling that there is a growing consciousness and this is a legal and viable option. It's worth it, even with the financial sacrifices we make for me to homeschool our children.

So what happens when we outlaw guns? People who are crazy and disturbed enough to carry out an act as devastating as this will find another way to get attention. So I ask, what will happen then? Will we have to outlaw every household item that can be used to create an implement of mass devastation? The products and information are readily available to anyone with the desire to find them. Also do you think all the guns used by gangs, drug dealers, and terrorists in this country have gone through the already difficult process of obtaining a firearm? Basically outlawing guns or stricter gun control laws will not solve this problem. Personally, I will keep my guns whether they're made illegal or remain my constitutional right.

This should be the tipping point that will shift us from gun control to an all out ban on firearms. This is the only way to help prevent further mass killings in this country. Confiscate all guns from registered owners, give lengthy prison sentences to all who do not comply, offer rewards for those who identify anyone secretly keeping firearms or ammunition, and end production and marketing of guns for civilians.

Having kids is like having part of your heart walking around out there. You just have to hope they are not in the wrong place at the wrong time. Those poor parents and families.

Anyone who does not agree with stricter gun control laws -- including those accepting lobby $ from the NRA - should have to look at the pictures of these five and six year old kids until they do.

In the land of the free, these tragedies will continue to happen.

Guns are available to practically anyone. Why is anyone in the USA surprised that it has happened again? With the intense media coverage and given time, it is certain a copy cat mass killing will occur again.

Folks that think arming more folks will solve the problem are not seeing reality. We're not going to "shoot our way out" of this terror, just like we're not going to arrest ourselves out of our drug problem.

Putting the genie back in the bottle (removing guns from our society and giving treatment to sick people on demand before they snap) isn't going to happen quickly or easily in the USA.

Some cynics would even call this a modern day version of "population control." Like rats confined in a cage. Density dependent behavior..

Common folks, no gun control laws or arming teachers or fencing in schools can protect against these kinds of things. The only thing that can help is when people report people with problems and police that actually interrogate these folks. Crazy people or criminals will always be able to secure weapons. It is when people report suspicious people to police that things like this horrible tragedy can be avoided. Enough of the PC stuff about being "different" is ok. My local (GUSD) elementary school does some good active shooter trainings. One of the trainings really scared my oldest kid. But I think they do a good job doing the training while not creating irrational fear. The best way to stop these shootings is to keep an eye on our family members and friends. Many have been stopped when by a family member who knows that something is not right.

I love the idea of gun control, but we don't seem to be making headway on it. And even if we had strict controls, there would still be the need to report someone who might be a danger to others.

My heart aches today. I will be hugging my kids a lot.

Chronic Uncertainty on Undocumented...

2012-12-14 12:38 PM

Brazil, Britain, Canada. Other EU nations. Latin and Central American countries. India.

This shtick about how we don't apply the law is nonsense. We deport hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants every year. The total population has been dropping every year since 2007. We are getting rid of them at a rate almost faster than they are immigrating. So what laws aren't being enforced? Should we hire 150k police to start knocking down doors and demanding papers?

I'd just like to know what you expect to be done. A 100 foot tall border wall? America, the police state? They come here because employers are willing to pay them wages below the mandated minimum because they are illegal. If you want less, focus on fixing our job market by bringing manufacturing jobs back. Maybe teach Americans that it's okay to get your hands dirty working on a farm, since apparently Americans are too good for that kind of work (as evidenced by Alabama).

Does it REALLY matter Western America?...Because in only about 500 years, YOU,& all of your "Fore-Fathers" have ruined the planet for all life which existed well for over 1.8 million years of humanity.
Ask the ancient Egyptians how well the "My land","My gold" concept went. If ANY readers feel they are entitled somehow to the land we find ourselves on,go talk to the Mayor you`ve elected & tell her it`s "Your land". When all is said & done, money will have decided who`s right or wrong & Americans will feel the blight they placed on the Natives of this land. Poisened soil,air,water,food,animals,people...mentality.

I once looked through the window of my next-door neighbor's kitchen and saw the exact same bottles of vitamins that had disappeared from my own kitchen table earlier in the week. An unusual brand, quite recognizable. In the same burglary my grandmother's beveled glass mirror was taken, and I really wanted it back. It was several WEEKS before the police took me seriously enough to think they had "probable cause" to search the house, and dang, there was the mirror in a closet. It was seized as evidence, and then it was 2 full YEARS before i got it back, and I was a pest asking for the return of it frequently. I have no idea if this is a typical story about "evidence."

http://www.PropertyRoom.com is a national web site that sells items confiscated by police. [BTW, I asked them if they double-checked items against stolen property lists, and they told me they didn't -- that the departments were supposed to check before listing them for sale. If anyone had proof that an item being auctioned was theirs, they'd turn it over, but otherwise... So can I be arrested for receiving stolen property if I buy it at a police auction?]

I certainly would like to know how this expensive piece of dilapidated "artwork" generates money for the City of Santa Barbara as another poster claimed. My understanding is, not only was a great deal of money SPENT installing this creation, but the maintenance is a considerable ongoing expense. At least the large ugly chrome or aluminum colored sphincter in front of the County Administration building at Anapamu and Anacapa streets, is low maintenance so little further tax money is wasted on it's upkeep. Clearly these creations are considered artistic by their makers, who of course, are the ones who get significant tax monies for what they like to call "public art". Many of those who were involuntarily forced to pay for these things, would likely call them unsightly heaps!

Chronic Uncertainty on Undocumented...

2012-12-14 09:47 AM

I think we have come up with a solution to this issue. We can assign the "jobs Americans won't do" to those incarcerated and on assistance. Having to work hard for benefits or as repayment for the cost of your incarceration will fill the gap left by illegal immigrants when we begin enforcing our immigration laws. Americans do want the construction jobs that are regularly underbid and taken by illegal workers. Teenagers do need to get part time jobs and they will mow lawns etc if the jobs are available. And 880 what in the world makes you think a majority of these people will subject themselves to being tested and documented to obtain a driver's license? Currently they can drive without worries. If they get a DUI they pay a fine if that. No record of anything else. I've seen this first hand. This problem is out of control and we have the means to fix it we just have to stop babying people who do not follow our laws.

Those on the left have learned to use virtually everything to dream up a way of making lots of money, while appearing to be championing some cause. (Al Gore is a perfect example) The biased writer of this article characterized these tides as "slamming our shore". These "causes" may be global warming, "homelessness", subsidized housing, healthcare, clean energy, extinction or "endangered species" from rats to bats, sustainable anything, etc. These are the same "green" folks that changed the English vernacular so that problems became issues. Now "issues" cover everything. You can have "health issues", "housing issues", "climate issues" etc. I actually heard one fellow say to another, "I have issues with your issues". It is clear we are becoming a nation of fools lacking in any common sense, preoccupied with being politically correct and championing many causes which take on the characteristics of the windmills being chased by Don Quiote!

In 1997 i chose not to go to college because i looked around at all my friends who were mechanicaly challenged, and had absolutely no work ethic due to their parenting and the fairly new trend of Nintendo. I had pride that i was willing to get dirty and really looked forward to makin some money while the rest of my friends were paying for college. Thought i made a pretty savy choice until i realized none of the older tradesmen wanted to risk hiring a Legal Citizen. Excuses of Insurance, employment taxes, and not enough work were the majority of the reasons why i could'nt be hired, yet picking up a few illegal aliens down at that wall was a daily occurance.
Most these guys are all well past retirement age but since they've bid down the price of services, they've actually put themselves into the poorer class making retirement unthinkable.

@897 - We (the USA) would not be paying federal tax to the Chumash. The "legal agreements" for the Chumash were established by Spain. The missions controlled the former Chumash lands and "held them in trust." It was Mexico that violated the trust, secularized the missions, and granted the Chumash lands as ranchos. If anything, the Chumash should be suing Mexico for stealing their lands.

Chronic Uncertainty on Undocumented...

2012-12-14 07:47 AM

The problem is not with field workers who make up a small percentage of the population of illegal’s... no, the problem is the cash based economy that thrives in the immigrant community and the ill effects it has on working class Americans.

One needs not look any further than the trades to see how a unfettered immigration policy decimated the incomes and livelihoods of Americans. The cheap labor undermined what was once a thriving option for Americans, who now, if they play by the rules, are underbid by those who do not play by the rules. The fallacy of Americans wont do those jobs is just that - a fallacy. The reality is that my 13 year old nephew doesnt have a single lawn to mow because they're all being trimmed and mowed by services that hire undocumented workers - this wasnt the case 25years ago - kids mowed the lawns in my neighborhood...

The cops can seize any property or money of any kind without being required to prove their case or allow the victim to prove that the asset is not involved in crime. While a person has the right to a fair trial, an asset does not, so the cops technically "arrest" the asset and keep it "in trust" forever. Most cops use this to their advantage, and it's a major source of funding for many departments.

Have you thought to spend your time addressing why they are there in the first place (major budget cuts to mental health) and how we can help them before they get to the streets? Remember they are still people with potential, every one of them. Remember Dickens quote on "Ignorance and Want." Thing is , 865 (and like thinkers) we all (well , almost all )recognize that as the last unspoiled stretch of Southern California coastline.
If I have the story right, historically it has been mostly 100 acre ag zoning. In 1888 , a plan was submitted to the county to create a township at Naples. That plan languished , buried for a century until developers dusted off the old records and saw that they had turned to gold. These non-local investors see nothing but dollar signs , where the majority of us see a chance at preservation.
Those who see want to see the coastline filled with wall to wall crud can drive south and get all they want of that. THIS IS SANTA BARBARA !

It used to be called Santa Anas, now it's "sundowners."

We used to call them bums, now they're "the homeless." (Or "domicile-challenged," but that's too hard to say.)

What used to be called "super high tide" is now a "King Tide."

King waves in Australia and Hawaii have carried people off the cliffs. There is signage to that effect in some places.

Why aren't we calling these "Queen" tides, anyway? I object.

Driver's licenses - it seems anyone driving in CA should have a driver's license for the protection of all of us. I don't like the idea of so many people driving without passing tests of their skills and knowledge of driving laws. I wish there was some way we could have illegals take the driver's test. I know we are then allowing them to drive in CA. But right now many are doing it with out proper training and testing. I'd like to see that separated out from being deported. I'm just thinking of the safety of us all. How would they pay a traffic fine, go to traffic court? It's complicated. But it seems crazy we have people driving the roads without having licenses.
