Every body except me has seen the local Bob Cats and their new families. I use to have chickens but gave them away because they attracted Rats. I would much rather have a Bob Cat clean them out. The Bob cats which live in our neighborhood which I have not seen supposedly have their families (2) near Via Huerto and Puente Drive. Forgive me for sharing that information neighbors. I hope the information does not attract a crowd.

this must've been a doozy if the comments were totally deleted, not just nannied into their own corral. I knew fruitcake was controversial, but this takes the cake! I know OP doesn't want to make it and I respect that, but Alton Brown's recipe has won great praise and I know many people who have made and enjoyed it. Even some who were not so big on fruitcake. The figure of speech "behind the 8 ball" existed for a very long time before it became a euphemism for an 1/8 ounce of drugs. 324's comment is valid and I agree with it. It does NOT excuse Robles' action, but the kid was pretty much doomed from the beginning. Criticizing the use of "literally" is grammatically accurate, but is not going to be too effective online. Or you could try explaining it instead of being snarky. Start the flaming.

I am a retired firefighter and would like to add my perspective. I live in the CIty of Santa Barbara and I pay an additional tax for living in a "High Fire Hazard Area" The fee goes to laudable programs for hazard reduction and the like. We get one "free" chipping of brush each year. I did NOT support this tax because in my view everyone in the city should have to pay it....the brush eventually will catch houses on fire on the other side of APS (Sycamore Fire) or further if the wind keeps up. Cal FIre regularly sends groups of fire engines down here when we have "Red Flag" conditions. Sure is nice to see those guys staged and ready to respond.... Montecito residents already pay an "override" of some sort to fund their department. Similar measures have failed in Carp a couple of times.

478p I'm not scared of nature. But after surgery in an actual clinical setting, your body's immunity is low. A normal cut or scrape is one thing, a surgical wound in a hospital with the risk you already have bacterium like staph going on is entirely another. Before assuming other people are scared of nature, please consider the difference between a healthy, non-traumatize immune system and a cut and someone who has just gone through surgery in a setting where they could have any kind of bacterium already on their skin. It doesn't take much to cause infection after that kind of invasive procedure. It's certainly NOT the same as childhood cuts.

Yeah, I heard it was raining hard in Goleta and figured it would move promptly into SB. It's so minimal near Cottage that I still have a window open, and I think it's stopped now. Weird. Glad y'all are enjoying the concert. The Who blew me away; Daltrey is amazing. heck, he's baby faced! and that torso! And Moon "participating" was so touching. Eddy Vedder with Roger Waters was wonderful; I love his singing. (Rogers: talk about the other best matured rock star! That is one handsome man.)

For the early birds in the land of daycare. We would gather our spray bottles and head out to the playground, near by brush and trees is where the most beautiful designs were found. We sprayed the spiders webs and magically they came alive. Right before the sun would move away from the webs the sun would shine a rainbow across the webs as if to say good morning back. The sun would move so quick in the morning, we only had a few moments of discovery. The children loved it.

The ability for us all to drive safely and harmoniously on the road has nothing to do with driver education. People know when they are not driving properly; they just don't care. How about we approach the problem of social standards surrounding driving? If one feels like they can run the light because it *just barely* turned red and nobody shames them for it, they'll keep doing it. If they wait until the last second to get into the lane they need to be in and cut another driver off in the process and nobody shames them, they'll keep doing it. Crossing over double yellow lines in turns, aggressively taking the right of way, driving fast in parking lots, and other selfish habits abound. The solution: tell that jerk of a driver you know (sometimes that jerk is us) to knock it off! If they feel they are being judged negatively by their friends and family for their self-centered driving style, they just might start driving differently.

WC means wood chipper, from the movie Fargo. I personally knew a HS teacher who was falsely accused of inappropriate conduct by a pissed off student he'd disciplined. Innocent until proven guilty, while on paid administrative leave while they investigate, is the only prudent course here. Remember the lies in the McMartin pre-school case? There are numerous teachers accused of inappropriate conduct who never did anything wrong. People tend to over-react to even the accusation of child abuse -- which is probably appropriate. But we need to remain skeptical, because there are a lot of false accusations and troubled kids, esp. in continuation high school.

Peter is a funny guy, part comedian , part Gladys Kravitz , that's what popped to mind when I first met Peter at Rogers house a few years back. He told a joke, I told a joke, then Roger told on of his classic stories that topped everything, after laughing for a wee bit Peter would start rubbing his hands together and say tell me everything that's going on in SB.. He had that look in his eyes, he loved it all and he loved SB, but above all he loved his family, both the ones at home that call him husband and dad, as well as the ones online on there pc, and phones that send in pictures and stories and yes even the people that called him and that wanted this person fired or that retracted, he would tell them to buy a subscriber membership and tell the person your self. Peter loved his Edhat family!!! To Sue and family, my familys thoughts and prayers go out to you during this ruff time. Peter's better now and a little bit of him remains in all of us. Love to you all Shakey....... Just a thought, how long do you think it will take Peter to add Heaven as a Edhat town ?

I don't know about all that. We had a plant in our yard and used it my entire childhood and we were fast healers with minimal scars. You can't get better than fresh aloe but if you're scared of nature you can buy it bottled at cvs.

The process will sort out his guilt or innocence as for paid leave they are still trying to get the teacher who served his fluids on crackers to elementary kids off the payroll. The rules are the rules and they won't change and yes it does appear Das Williams helped keep it that way.

Rincon is a CONTINUATION HIGH SCHOOL whose students are not going to regular public school for one reason or other, but at the risk of being un-politically correct, I think it's a safe observation that many of its students have psychological problems, some pretty major. It is not at all unheard of for psychologically disturbed children and teenagers to level some pretty awful accusations against teachers, and many of those accusations are later proven unfounded. Let's not crucify anyone just yet.

442 - settle down, amigo! The Carp Unified has asked an employee to not come to work while they do some investigation. That is a reasonable thing. An accused deserves due process, and not paying a teacher while the district investigates allegations is preserving the employee/employer relationship. Think of it this way - it's like sick pay. The teacher isn't fit for the classroom (until charges are investigated) - they are out on sick leave.

So much for a fair trial and a verdict by one's peers. It sounds as though this man has already been tried and judged by a few peers on here. How do we know he is a child molester? We know nothing. Of course a teacher is fully scrutinised before employed. He is on paid leave because it would be unfair otherwise. Why punish a person before you know the truth?

My point was, the taxpayer ends up footing the bill regardless. Plus someone's being paid to cover his classroom while he's being paid to not teach during the court process. I wasn't commenting on the judicial system or his guilt or innocence,per se. And maye there's no other way to handle it but to pay twice for the class(es) to be covered since his guilt is not determined. It just pisses me off, is my point.

I am the poster. I know we need flood insurance and we have carried it continuously since we bought the property. The problem is that every other month they send us a notice that we don't have it and then add it to our mortgage. We spend hours on the phone playing the transfer and wait game and even go in person to US Bank. Our insurance agent has repeatedly contacted them. We are in the process of re-financing but with mortgage companies you never know if your loan is going to be sold. BTW, we also hired a civil engineer to check our property and yes it is in a flood zone.

I'm sure you'd love to receive your paycheck while you fight to prove your innocence, if you were accused and imprisoned. Lawyers ain't cheap, living in Carp/SB ain't cheap. Innocent until proven guilty, people. I know molestation sounds grossly horrible. But we are all citizens... Let's remember our civility. Perhaps if he's found guilty the school can sue him later to recoup the paychecks?

He was deported because he is not a US citizen or legal resident. I wish we could deport all non citizens who commit crimes....and revoke the citizenship of Americans who cant follow our laws too. Why do I have to pay to house those who wont play by the rules..just kick them out of the US and be done with it.

Wow, it's the City's longest bulb-out? Found this at measure a dot net: "Provide safe pedestrian route of travel along the South Side of La Colina Road from Pesetas Lane to Lee Drive. The Project will: replace 4 existing non-ADA compliant ramps; install 3 additional ADA compliant ramps; install approximately 900 linear feet of sidewalk and driveway improvements, and street width will be narrowed to accommodate the new sidewalk and reduce traffic speed in the area. Some repair work to the north side of the road will be included in the project. the project is currently in at 60% design phase in Fall 2011." I haven't found any other online docs saying the design changed. I'm of course, all for school safety for kids walking - but if I owned those houses I'd be livid to lose my on-street parking. We already have a crossing guard on duty for Hope School, and lots of signs.

By all the front yard space that was removed, I'm not sure why you would deduce that the street would be narrowed at all. That seems like it would become unsafe for traffic - going from wide to narrow to wide again, along that stretch of La Colina. Not sure if it is about being smart or dumb, but these are definitely not nice people that care about you or your children. I am guessing probably fisherman hired(or maybe even forced) by cartels down in good old Mexico to make a run for them. Sooner or later the desperation will start to increase and these guys will be armed, and or their buddies waiting for them on the beach will be. Hopefully law enforcement is on the ball. So far it seems law enforcement has been pretty good with the learning curve in figuring out their methods.

I think maybe part of the reason these pictures are released later than it seems practical is a combination of the lag in reporting time AND the fact that the police are conducting a criminal investigation in which giving a picture to the public is the LAST resort after their investigation proves fruitless. Just drive around, go to the area between the Mission rose gardens and APS or something, there is plenty of native aloe. 331 - Clearly Santa Barbara is included as it is in California and part of the mainland! In the treaty, however, the western boarder ends at the Pacific Ocean, which does not include the islands. Yes, the US has spent $, etc to maintain the Channel Islands as a state park, but I can't find a single legal document between Mexico and the US that says the islands were given to the US. My only reasoning for bringing this is whether or not get could get in trouble for landing on the island with drugs and or people and could we legally protect and prosecute for anything that happens on the islands?

My Mom was almost scammed this way last year. Supposedly my nephew was locked up in Ecuador on drug possession charges. Mom called his Mom (my sister) in New York who said, "I can't talk right now, Jack is taking >the nephew< to the airport." That's when Mom knew she'd been fooled. Fortunately it was before she had done anything with $. These scammers are good. The elderly can and do fall for it. Mom had never heard of the scam because she only reads a hardcopy newspaper and watches PBS news. They don't cover this stuff much because everybody knows about it. (Yogi Berra would have said that if he was alive maybe.)

I have aloe plants all ovet the place and not a single one has leaf's. They are more, like spears that drip and ooze a lot once they are cut. A word of caution, if you apply the ooze over a place that has any blood it will turn dark reddish, and it stays that way until the wound closes.

I got two of these calls in the last few days. Same guy, same message! The second time I asked for his name. He gave me one and when I told him he had the wrong grandma he said, "This isn't my grandma?" His message was that he was in jail on a DUI, he had rear-ended someone from a foreign country. The DUI was forgiven but he had to repay the foreigners for damages to their car before he could get out of jail. Needless to say, I just hung up.

They should do the unpaved sections of La Cumbre as part of safe routes to school too. Living on the street, I would hate to have part of my "yard" "taken" but there are so many sections with just dirt or worse bushes blocking and so many Jr High students that often step out in the street, it is dangerous, I have been nearly hit many times.

Related, does anyone know if any interesting archeological items were found when they excavated the site? Being so close to the Arlington, in the heart of downtown, there must have been remnants of different phases of habitation in town. Nowadays, I thought it was part of building to report any findings. I think the bail is high due to the charge of arson. They could have charged him with vandalism but this will keep him in jail for a while because I doubt a bail bondsman will loan him any money. If I light my cigarette up, can they arrest me for arson too? How big of a fire does it have to be?

The Channel Islands are clearly above this line. By your logic, Santa Barbara is still part of Mexico since it is not named in the treaty either.

FYI - when Mexico and the US signed the Guadalupe-Hidalgo Treaty (Mexico was paid for the lands from Texas to California) this did not include the Channel Islands. Based on this treaty, the islands technically still belong to Mexico. Legally, I don't see how they can get into any trouble if they go and stay on one of the islands, but bringing it to the continental US is a problem. Could that be why our government has not really done much in protecting our coast near the islands?

3,000 lbs and 8 people seems to be a large load for that boat. Only 2 motors too, many have 4. Even with ground crew they appear to be over staffed. Unemployment does not appear to be a problem in Druglandia.

I agree with the poster who named Tom Conklin with Santa Barbara Carpet Cleaning. He is very careful with the furniture, always thoroughly rinses and dries as much as he can. I had him do sofas, chairs, and rugs, and have been very happy with all of them. He's efficient, on time, honest and, in my opinion, worth the money.

You are right we don't know this man's story and if he is a vet I feel terribly sorry for him. I come from a long line of military with my grandfather and brother being career military. It takes a very strong individual to go through the service (even at times of "peace") and not have some effect, physically or mentally or both. They come home after giving more than any civillian job and cannot find a job, have to fight like crazy to get services from the VA that they were promised, and often are dealing with their own challenges coming back to society. I think many of our vets are treated like prison inmates that are just being released. In fact there are more programs that are easily accessible to parolees then veterans. Something needs to give and soon!! Our vets should not have to become criminals to get the help they need!!!

Actually the truck was not speeding, the lady ran a stop sign..failed to stop and ran right into the truck. Nice assumption though @775. If you look at the police report the lady was in a honda accord and hit a toyota tundra, obviously she was the one speeding if she ran a truck into a tree and flipped it on its side. The driver of the truck was able to clumb out but is obviously injured since he was body slammed into the pavement with glass in his arm.

I just don't get the argument that this is about the war on drugs and legalizing it would make it go away. Should we legalize anthrax, sarin and plutonium too? This is a much more important issue that needs a hard look before something really bad happens because there are people out there that hate the USA. And what is to say that these smugglers even know what they are carrying? What if someone stashed a dirty bomb in a bail of weed? Wake up and smell the coffee. Capps did a good job by addressing the issue yesterday.

I think Roger makes an excellent point - these could be terrorists bringing in a "suitcase nuke" to set off in one of our many west coast strategic targets (Vandenberg AFB, San Diego Naval Base, etc) or a large city like LA. Luckily, they've just been drug smugglers but still... I sure hope with this increased frequency (almost weekly now) the Feds step up and put some more muscle on this!

No. All that nonsense about the world ending on 12-21 doesn't even hold up when you take into account that the Mayans didn't have leap years, so if you add those in, the world would have already ended. Not that I would have believed it anyway, but I thought that was a cool explanation anyway.

On the topic of flood insurance... There are classifications of risk of damage -- how high above the flood plain you are -- that greatly change the amount of flood insurance you are required to carry. A group of neighbors in our neighborhood got together and hired a specialist civil engineer with experience in these matters to document that we were at lower risk than classified. It reduced our required flood insurance by hundreds of dollars each year.

5 years ago Chase tried the flood insurance charge. We had our property surveyed and had proof we were not in a flood zone. They agreed no flood Ins. necessary. Last week the same Co. Chase has again tried to put flood Ins. on our property. We have not sunk or had any earthquake movement to our property. Yet again we have to prove we are not in a flood zone.

Just heard about Peter's passing. Peter was my first boss, at my first real paying job. I worked for coolmaps for about a year in the late 90's. In college, I remember trying to apply to the UCSB computer lab and getting rejected for "having too much experience with computers". Then, I just went through the UCSB computer science department's "local companies" list and started applying. I only had to go down to "C" before I got my first interview with Peter, and he hired me on the spot. We worked out of his garage in the foothills of Santa Barbara, and used his kitchen as our break room. It was a great start to my career as a software engineer. Thanks for everything Peter. Rest in peace.

There is no conspiracy here with the navy secretly letting these pangas by. It really is that hard to spot them, they have virtually no radar profile, minimal heat signature, and are relatively quiet. They are a needle in a haystack, the ocean is huge and given how hard they are to find with remote sensing technology it requires scanning small swaths of ocean. However, it seems like in the last year we are catching more and more, and findig fewer abandoned on the beach with their cargo long gone.

I second del bonis. He's a nice dude and it's reasonable. they also use stuff that doesn't stink up the carpet or leave too much water in and ruin the twist or pile. @195p, it's been my experience that if you can move the light stuff out of the way, they will put the things like sofas on little cardboard feet and move them around and clean under them. things like a dresser or buffet could be moved with the help fo friends maybe though, that's prob too heavy to ask them to move for you.

205- Im sure the number is 1 in 1000 realistically. Our channel isn't that crowded with boats, and these are one a week or so. Also, i think we can use a little good ol boat profiling to stop these guys. Last time i checked no one in a panga was out catching Halibut, and at the same time, its not like dozens on Radon's and Davis' are smuggling drugs from mexico.

I just don't 'get' 329P. We have so much yard work to take care of we don't know where to begin. We don't expect others to grapple with our yard work problems. Some brain takes it upon himself to remove leaves and whatever from an entire property. Why I don't know. So the guy blows it all onto the street where there's a bike lane. There is a HUGE amount. It poses a great hazard. It is way beyond the pale. We do not know who this person is. In fact, he could be deranged. He ignores the hazardous situation from the morning on Saturday until almost dark on Sunday. But I'm supposed to go seek him out and tell him I'll H E L P him. That is almost as foolish an idea as the guy doing what he did.

There's already a Navy radar site on Santa Cruz, as well as military installations on San Clemente and San Nicholas. Should be able to install enough remote sensing stuff to pick up Panga movement. One of the very coolest things about the ride is to see all the people on the streets (from Summerland to Goleta) cheering for, and thanking, the riders for their contribution. If you haven't given lately, try it. And, by the way, it IS really impressive to see several hundred riders together.

My elementary schoolmate Sebastian Galata used to have one as a kid--took it to school and kept it for a day in his old style lidded desk. We played with it (just handled it gently or put it inside our shirts) during recess in 5th grade. He managed to keep it hidden from the teacher all day. It was a youngster--about 12" long, very thin. Subby grew up to become a locally renowned (Palo Alto) master cabinet maker--he got his start in woodworking by making cages for his reptiles as a kid.

@65 You are correct, but the discussion is about people who already DO have flood insurance, but the bank insists they don't and then the hassle begins. That was our situation and it took weeks and hours of our and our insurance agents time trying to get the bank to adjust their incorrect records and refund the outrageous charge they added to the mortgage payment after they assigned their own insurance carrier.

to OP: many, many inequities in where the lines were drawn. Homeowners living just yards from my parcel do not pay the extra fee, though we both live in the county and already pay a fire services fee on our property taxes; their lots are covered with Eucalyptus "Tiki Torches", while my lot is cleared and planted in fire resistant planting zones. They have old shake roofs while my house is stucco and the roof is concrete. I have a fire hydrant in front of my house. THAT is what makes me angry, and the fact that the money goes into a fund to be used anywhere in the state at their discretion. It is NOT however used for actual fire suppression services rendered.

Great post. i was a pearl diver (dishwasher) at John Dory's, now Brophys. We were all so proud when we had a $1,000 day. Probably what Brophy's drags down in an hour at the bar now. .

These little guys are such a treat to see, I got to see one out in daylight near redrock a few years ago and had to look it up. Only time they come out in daylight is during breeding season. They are harmless and rare, and beautiful.

it is IN YOUR MORTGAGE PAPERS, read them before you sign. If you are in a flood plane, you MUST have flood insurance. I had my property surveyed and literally a two foot corner of my building touched the 100 year flood plane, the rest of the property was too elevated to be involved, but I am still forced to buy flood insurance anyway. It is not a scam, much as I hate to pay it, it is clearly noted in your mortgage agreement and was there when you signed the documents. It should not be a surprise to you.

Spending millions more on "education" is the hue and cry of the teachers unions. Spend more money to solve the woefully underperforming grade school academia is the easy, popular and succesful way to increase everyone's taxes. Unfortunately throwing more and more money at the system only benefits the teachers, administrators and classified employees. Unless and until the real problem is addressed educational skill level will never get better. It all starts in the home before any students become students within the system. Teachers and administrators do not want to tell the truth and admit this because it is politically incorrect and their efforts with so many of these underperforming students will make little difference regardless of how much money we spend. If they told the truth the taxpayers would be likely to turn off the faucet.

What I find disgusting is all the people in their million dollar + homes complaining about a $115 - $155 fee... What sucks is all the people who dont live in million dollar homes in high fire zones who have to pay taxes to support those who do... we already pay our firefighters more than anywhere else and now the folks who need the help the most are balking at a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of their homes value to offer wildfire support... As an former wild land FF I think the fee should be 10x... after all these people chose to live where they do...

For those who wish to fight the Fire Tax Fee here is your go to web site firetaxprotest.org This is a project of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Ass'n. Down load the petition and follow the instructions and be sure and send a copy of the petition to all three government offices. Also if you google this subject there is a ton of information out there.

You write eloquently and with heart. Your words and memories of Peter really encapsulated the void I can only assume we all must be feeling now. I am sure there are those who don't share my sentiments...but I have to say, you are one heck of a wordsmith, even if your spell checker is off sometimes-I am sure people are really just jealous they aren't you.
I wish I lived close enough to bring you cookies or groceries or whatever you needed. I look to your reports daily for info on SB and surrounding areas.

Was he headed for the casino to make deliveries to the tweekers hanging out there and now able to play all those penny slot machines? Now that almost all the slot machines are penny machines there should be lots more "tweeker" customers and old folks with nothing to do all day. At least they cant lose their money as fast.

The funny part of this is that you folks think this fee gets applied locally. What you're paying for is CalFire (CDF) funding and the nearest CDF jurisdiction is either SLO to the north (Nipomo Station 20) or Ventura (Ventura Camp). Also funny how people roll over and comply without educating themselves first.

bail is not necessarily an indication of the seriousness or quantity of crimes committed, rather it is a reflection of the risk of the defendant fleeing and failing to answer charges in court. Plain and simple, he's a flight risk.

The Sheriff Dept has been trying to take over as much of Fire Dept functions as they can. Started back when Sheriff Thomas was made Sherrif AND Fire Chief. The Sheriff should enforce the law. Fire should protect us from harm. Let's get the Sheriff out of the Fire Dept business!

yes.....and they gave even me FEMA insurance.....more expensive....I had my insurance company bug them and faxing them the information. Let you insurance company do the work, but check up on them, as well.

Yes. EVERY YEAR same thing for 8 years. Not the insurance company's fault! Proof of insurance sent multiple time each year but still happens. Maybe it's a way for banks to pad out their year-end numbers? Our mortgage was WaMu then bought by Chase.
