Easy Come Easy Go?

2012-12-06 11:15 PM

The F&E in Lompoc has been here for quite a while now. Self check was a drag @first, but I've come to appreciate it. Quick in & out. They have great staples in their In-House products & an array of standard product brands. They don't stock every product & every brand, but F&E has become a great store that I will miss if they go away.

I walk my dogs past that Chino St. location several times a week. The woman who documented the trash piles on that property kept a very accurate of records of the comings and goings at that property. It looks good on the outside now, I know he chopped up the rooms within the house so he can pack as many people in there as possible. He wreaks havoc on a neighborhood and doesn't give a shit. With all that property and money why the hell doesn't he just retire and enjoy life instead of ruining things for others?

Brick & Mortar VS Online Shopping

2012-12-06 09:59 PM

Brick and mortar vs. online - we lament the loss of SBBT jobs recently, but look how easy is it to bank and invest online and out of town or country. Seems as if there's a race to the bottom of cheapest and easiest. We'll see how well this serves us down the road. I feel for our kids; it doesn't seem like we're being good stewards for their future.

Looking at the reader responses, it seems many readers prefer to shop online. I just miss a lot of those old stores, Anderas, Levy's shoe store, Ott's, Joseph and I. Magnin, Hunt's, and many, many more. Sure the selection is massive online. Zappo's is cute, but I like going into a store such as our local ones to hand select classy Christmas cards. Oh, forgot, sending Christmas cards is going the way of dodo bird.

064, I haven't been on Puente in a long time, but I'd say her stable is/was the one before Via Cayente. I don't know, but I assumed she lived there. Nice red trim and white paint. Of course that was many decades ago. I so regret not writing her a fan letter when she was alive. At least she could've gotten the missive through the Sage Hens. It was Jean S. who told me she'd passed. Best article I've found so far:

2012-12-06 09:21 PM

Sorry for continuing the thread jack from books to memories and anecdotes, but this is a thread full of great info, local history and lots of material to add to the reading list.

I'll be googling a lot of names, if not reading books, starting with Alice Keck Park.

679 and Basenji Mom, thanks for remembering that poor man. For those not familiar, the fact that he wore a welder's mask might tip you off... curious and so very sad.

One decent thing about Jonesy -- he repaid his debts, that I knew of. He used to borrow a few bucks from a music store on Figueroa and he was very good about repaying when his monthly check arrived. The money went to food; I never saw him drunk (unless I couldn't tell because he was pretty crazy). I had contact with him around 1976; he never crossed a line with me. I am not wholly surprised at what is stated here about him. Also, his bicycle decorations were as big a part of the shtick as his clothing, musical instruments and flowers.

798, how wonderful that you knew and rode with Dorothy Lyons! Thanks for posting. I have a few years on you, but I rode at Garth Shoop's stable at the top of Puente, which was split with Bob Mastagni and his Belgians. (RIP, Bob. You are still loved and missed.)

My preference is online shopping. It's easier to comparison shop, research the item, and I read up on the reviews and articles beforehand, also I never pay retail. I will always find an internet coupon or a great sale for what I'm looking for. I didn't know until recently that they had a cuisine because I had heard for decades that absolutely nothing grew there and everyone was starving and migrated to relief camps for white gruel served in shallow metal pans. Apparently, there's this whole other side to Ethiopia. I should've gone with my first instincts as a kid because if they're wearing beautiful brightly colored clothing, there's got to be food there. Anyways, I've had the cuisine and it's unbelievably delicious and wholesome.

One of the things that's great about buying on the internet is that you can read reviews on the item before you buy it. Plus you can easily compare prices, pick the best one considering terms, shipping and location. The good thing about buying at a store is you get to try things on. I respect that so I buy there at least the first time. I also like people and see that they are our neighbors and need to be supported.
I do both and now that tax is collected on internet things buying local makes sense especially since you can have it now instead of waiting days to get it.

Water Filters

2012-12-06 08:40 PM

1st.. A whole house filter doesn't soften the water, so if you like to lather up it wont work! 2nd.. Whole house filters primarily filter sediment. Be careful about the sizing of your whole house filter! Make sure that the filter can provide the needed GPM(gallons per minute) for the fixtures currently in your home. The most common mistake made by installers is "undersizing" the filter. Having a 3/4" water service doesn't mean you should install a 3/4" filter housing, the type of filter determines how much water will flow through it per minute, so make sure the filter doesn't restrict the flow needed to sufficiently supply ALL fixtures at the same time.
3rd.. A reason why your softener "isn't doing it" for you would help with providing a fix.

As someone who appreciates textures, I like to touch the product, though oftentimes the packaging in stores makes it difficult to do. Does the product feel good, show quality? Patronizing a local business is important too; as someone who operates a small business, competing with the Big Business world on the internet - it's challenging. Many people only value the lowest price, not the best all around value. I miss many stores that used to be in Santa Barbara, and I don't blame the mayor or city council or maybe not even the Walmart/Costcos - it is what it is, sometimes dreadfully.

@351106 thank you. You perfectly summed up my sense of SB after having grown up here. The fact that so many live off rent as landlords (and most are not good at what little that job demands) has made Santa Barbara a place of very lazy, low achieving, boring people who contentedly surf all day or hang out while those who pay rent are working 90 hours a week with advanced degrees. This has edged out most of the interesting people who made SB unique and fun -- the artists, musicians, creative types, helpers. If you are a landlord who is complaining about "white trash" renters why don't you rent to locals only? And why don't you rent to professional families? Or did you scrape to buy a total dump/meth house so you too could gouge what you can from the most marginal? It's not hard to find professionals who need to rent here.

Water Filters

2012-12-06 07:05 PM

I use a whole house filtration and soft mineralization system that requires no salt/potassium, does not waste water, does not need a drain or electricity and makes no noise. It only takes up one square foot of floor space. Needs servicing once every 5-10 years or so. It has a zero carbon footprint and the best thing is, I can drink filtered water from every faucet in the house. It tastes good enough that I took out my old reverse osmosis system. And all the while it protects everything in the house from hard scale/mineral damage. They are called "Eco-Safe" from a company called Puregen in Chino. They can probably refer you to a local supplier/installer. Ask for Allan 909-548-0339.

As a landlord, I would love to inspect rentals every 12 months. The problem the tenants do not want us to come in and inspect. Some do not want to admit extra roommates, others do not want us to see the new closet garden and others do not want to be told to clean up the range that we installed brand new when they moved in and is now a fire hazard.

I would love to know, does Pini rent rooms or apartments? And just how does he get people to agree to live in a kitchen? I know I had had students talk about how they could put up sheets and get a dozen people to live in space for 6 max. But I sure would not want a property back after that many people lived in it!

How well Edhat readers describe their neighborhood; interesting to read these postings. Our neighborhood near Olive and East Islay St. is peaceful - that's what I appreciate. There are few, if any, curmudgeons. It's a wondrous walk to the Mission where the rose garden/mountain vistas comfort the eyes. It's a short walk downtown. More than ever, I give thanks for living here.

There are three Santa Barbaras - the wealthy, the underemployed, overworked and the poor. The majority of rentals are overpriced sub-par units. If you cannot afford to pay $2000-4000 you're stuck with the slums. How do you think all the poor, the students, the immigrants and others afford to live here? They live in situations that most of you would find appalling. How does this happen? Dunno, if you try and build anything here you're inundated with the most ridiculous and expensive compliance... yet the slums remain. There are so many illegal units in this town - garages, basements, sun rooms, etc. Its crazy. When you dig into it there are a lot of people who bought their property 20+ years ago and live off the rent... Have you ever wondered how so many people are just hanging out in the middle of the day around town? They're probably a slum lord renting their crappy house they bought for 200k for $3500.

Hi OP,

I don't know the exact difference between MCS and Montessori in Goleta. My suggestion is that you call each school and ask that question directly. See what they both say.

It is my understanding that the Goleta Montessori is certified by the International Montessori Association and Montessori Center School on Fairview is certified by the American Montessori Association. That may mean that the Goleta school is truer to the original Maria Montessori method and that MCS is an "Americanized" version of the Maria Montessori method.

I'm not really sure, but I do know that we are very happy at MCS and we know people who are really happy at Goleta. Observe both! As far as boys to girls ratios, they fluctuate, just like they do in public schools. Some years are boy heavy and some girl heavy. Right now at MCS in the upper elementary program, I'd say it is pretty close to 50/50.

Good luck in your search.

We have been renting happily from the same landlord for 12 years. Last month he provided a new kitchen because the original, put in when the condos were built, was becoming worn. Next year we will be getting a new bathroom and double glazed windows through out. We always get immediate attention when a problem, such as plumbing. appears, and the landscaping is beautifully kept up. Not all landlords are scummy and a good landlord usually appreciates a good tenant.

A whole house filter system is the way to go if you can afford it, no salt and the water is great you can wash your car and have no water spots great for laundry and you can drink your water out of the tap.. R O is great but it takes out all the minerals out of the water , and it flushes out about as much as you use, Recomend taking vitamans and mineral supliments if you drink RO water As we know water grabs all the minerals it can and if it is barren of them it will take the minerals out of your body, But on a good note It is great for kiddney stones eats those little Ba#$%@ds right up...

I'm sorry 056, but 29 years for attempted murder hardly seems like a cruel punishment. Anti-depressants and therapy is not the answer to a drunken pre-meditated shooting spree. We need safety in our town, and if we have 2 less people running around doing shootings like this, then our community has gained extreme value and security.

Also, for those who are unaware of why this man got so many years in prison, he was on his third strike, which brings a capital punishment enhancement. His brother was NOT on 3 strikes, and he only got 15 year with time he has already served, deducted from that sentence.

I have been harassed by one of the RV dwellers when I walk my dogs on the morning.....acting like the gestapo because the tag I paid over $100 for was left at home. It is clear to me these people are not "locals" and I have no idea why Elings is allowing them to take over the Park. I really wish the City would take the Park back.

Good. It is about time- the mega-agri- interests in this County have hijacked the Water Board process for far too long- they intimidate and bully elected officials and planners into allowing them carte blanche to poison our water, destroy natural resources and somehow skirt basic oversight. Time for that to end.

This is an outrageously long sentence for this crime. In fact, people like this should have antidepressant meds be part of their parole. They wouldn't be so pissed off all the time.

Private Grade School

2012-12-06 04:28 PM

I was not comfortable with public school intitally and we sent our first child to Marymount for K. MCS was full at the time. We later moved to a larger home in the Hope School District. Public school has its challenges at times, but we have had some excellent teachers there. I also note that Marymount sent my child to catholic mass several times that year without notifying us, and there is more religious content than they lead you to believe. Also, almost every one of the students at our public school graduates K reading, while that was not the emphasis for my first. My son needed extra fine motor work, so it was not really a problem for him. Still, it was surprising.

I believe parent involvement, great teachers, and - to some degree - class size are key. I also enjoy the diversity of our school. The "extras" like Spanish, etc. can all be supplemented outside of school for a lot less money.

Generalizations admit of exceptions by definition, so, even if one has an "awesome" landlord, it's still certainly possible that most landlords in this town do not fit this description (my 20 years plus renting before owning was something along the lines of utter disrespect for anything remotely like 'renter's rights' ...and we were exceptional tenants). I do know (anecdotal evidence, to be sure) that Pini has been among the worst of the worst in this town for many years (indeed, in our neighborhood on the Westside, he has a rental property that was long a favorite of drug dealers and only recently was cleaned up a bit by a tenant owing to the complaints of neighbors).

I applaud the city for trying this, but nothing of merit will come of it I am afraid. What they fine him $5k? max maybe? He will be laughing all the way to the bank. I'd love to see a survey of renters in SB and Goleta and see how many have mini-Pinis for landlords who don't fix things, rent places that aren't structurally sound, don't inspect annually so they "don't know" what the problems are (leaking roof, etc.), and on and on. Power Outage

2012-12-06 02:54 PM

657: Good observation skills.

Yes. 24 hours without power was interesting, to say the least. I got kick out of how I was on autopilot and would flip light switches before thinking. We had lots of romantic candle light and a big roaring fire. Booklights aren't all that fun, though. And now I know to keep my laptop charged at all times.

Got a good laugh when my über repair man/handy guy roommate asked me why we needed a key to open garage door. It was great to see the look on his face. "Oh, yeah, electric."

At midnight, I walked up to Pedregosa and Laguna to watch Edison at work. Two cranes with four guys in cherry-picker buckets. I could tell the time estimate for power would have to be moved back.

Only one other person out walking. Black as pitch, but starlight nice. Anyone else see the moonrise? The moon looked like it had been torn in half, all raggedy edged.

Upper East/not quite lower Riviera, with ocean views, and within 15 minutes fast walk of MTD Transit Center. Loads of birds and butterflies. So quiet at night, I can walk miles at midnight/1am and only me and my dog.
Fantastic night sky, Barn owls, skunks, raccoons, opossums. It's great that most people are inside after 8 or 9pm. My jughead neighbors (only annoyingly loud ones for blocks and blocks) are finally shut down after 8pm, and their brats asleep and all is at peace.
Entire rest of neighborhood is quiet and friendly and good people Lots of happy dog walkers, all day long. Love the oaks, eucs, high hedges, night-bloomiing plants.

Plus our neighborhood gets very quiet at night and I love waking up at 3 am and not hearing a sound. FYI ... I live on the upper east side about 6 blocks from the Mission. Contrary to people's opinions, there is a real mix of large beautiful homes and rentals (duplexes and apts. built behind homes). I like the contrast. Most of us in the area know each other by sight and always say hello. It feels like a neighborhood.

California Highway Patrol Officers ...

2012-12-06 01:47 PM

Another young man nearly died not long ago falling from the Chumash parking structure after drinking too much. The Chumash were issued a temporary license for expanded alcohol sales a year ago despite hundreds of reported police incidents for alcohol, drunk driving, drug sales and under the influence and over a hundred protests filed. There is a pending protest but the temporary license will remain in effect until the protest is resolved and the expanded sales currently occurring could become permanent and even more available. The casino is a crime wave, covered up by politicians who are afraid to say anything because these people claim to be part Indian and play the race card whenever possible to silence criticism. Under very suspicious circumstances the County agreed to withdraw it's protest to the expanded alcohol sales. The civil law presents no protection because of a quirk in federal law giving Indian tribes legal immunity from lawsuit.

And there are more people who are healthy and physically able to take the stairs, who don't, than there are people who can't. I think 932 is trying to say, if you can, you should...

They should have touch screens in the elevators with internet connection so that if sheeple are trapped, they can still continue shopping uninterrupted. Then the crews can work to free them, without the emergency/urgent element.

Ok. Back to the subject. Our neighborhood is nice for its privacy and relative seclusion in an urban setting. Big (mostly) empty hill behind us, lots of shrubbery camouflaging nearby houses. Friendly, helpful, but unintrusive neighbors. Dogs sometimes run free, but they always seem well behaved. Dark at night allowing for incredible star gazing. Between 101 and cathedral oaks in Noleta.

Tesco is disappointed with the overall sales figures for their US venture. They are a profitable and successful company so it only makes sense that they would sell off their US stores and cut their losses. The reality is, looking at their overall sales etc., they could close all their US stores outright too- it would only have a minimal impact on their bottom line. We'll soon see.

Re: Jonesy. Years ago, after Jonesy left S.B., I was in a coffee shop in Nevada City with an S.B. friend who had moved to Auburn (who also remembered him) and he walked in -- exactly the same as always. We were blown away. This past year I was visiting the same friend and we were viewing Auburn galleries. One artist had done a picture of Jonesy, who looked the same as always again. There was talk about where he was from; the people there said Newcastle, CA. Definitely a memorable character -- sad he was not a nice man.
Re: Dorothy Lyons. Those of you who knew her probably do not know that she was also an artist. She belonged to the S.B. Art Association. I would pick her up and take her and her art to the shows. She was quite proud of her Association membership.

The property will be protected against those seeking free use of it. You're not going to see any "easement rights" arguments with this property. Let's see the same angst against the other property owners who are already blocking "the beautiful ocean view". Maybe you could go to indiegogo and pool your funds to buy it from Mr. Caruso. I also recall a guy, sort of the anti-Mason who used to play the bagpipes (badly) downtown and at the beach driving many crazy 20 or so years ago.

Affordable Christmas Tree

I can remember when I had to struggle to get the $20 trees at the grocery store. After 45 years, after all the kids were raised I was sick of putting all the decorations away so eliminated trees. There are many creative ways to decorate w/o one. I make what I call a "focal point" to put presents around. For a few years it was a Jacobs Ladder (historical, here when no trees available in the mid 19th century), another my saddle w/pepper and cow lights. Or, a batch of driftwood long sticks from the beach put in a huge crock, with tiny white lights and a few red balls.

I hate to be a grinch, but planting conifers in Santa Barbara is BAD BAD BAD from a fire prevention standpoint, Those things become huge Roman candles in a wildfire. The more of them we have in the urban and suburban forest the worse it is for your firefighters. Also, make sure you take a fresh cut off the base of a non-living tree and keep it well watered and make sure you follow manufacturer's recs on how many strings of lights to use. Turn it off when you leave!

The ambience of the Miramar Hotel was ruined when the 2 story (ugly) buildings were built in the 1960s. It became a glorified Motel 6. The beach view will especially benefit when the boardwalk "2 stories" are gone. I grew up next to the hotel; little cottages on the boardwalk and around the pool, with lawns and flowers, made the place lovely. Glad it will finally be cleaned up. Who cares if anything is ever built there?

Tough for a small, local business to stay alive when people can't get there. If you want to complain, go to a city council meeting.

This has nothing to do with the severity of DUI laws; they are pretty severe - as a first offender (if that's the case) he will face felony DUI charges. If that doesn't "bring him to Jesus", as it were, the restitutions he will have to pay to the family of the deceased and to the other victims surely will.... monthly payments for the next 10 years at least. This ride has been happening for years and it generates a lot of money for the Unity Shoppe. and it is sad to think it may be coming to an end.
In the past few years the head of the Unity has not been as helpful as he could be. The police charge a huge fee to allow the riders to pass thru town. Some of the businesses on State St. complain that they lose money during that 20 minutes the riders are passing thru.
The raffle prizes are all donated by the riders and local businesses. THank goodness for the Chumash's donations or this SB event would have died years ago mainly because of the huge fee the police department charges. The money paid to them could go to the Unity Shoppe.

@733: Actually, Tesco is more the Kroeger of the UK. Tesco and Sainsbury's are the two major UK supermarket chains, with Safeway a smaller player. Tesco (and Sainsbury's) offer good value and great items, but unlike Walmart, you don't really hear of unhappy employees or slave-like working conditions. Tesco and Sainsbury's are kind of like Ralphs and Albertsons--excellent markets, but pretty indistinguishable from one another.

Since Trsco is the parent compny of Fresh & Easy, I'd expected a lot more from it. When it finally opened on Milpas Street, I realized that Trader Joe's was in no danger of being run out of business.

Santa Barbaran Biography

2012-12-06 08:19 AM

YIN YANG, I used to help Dorothy Lyons care for her horses when I was a young girl (this would be mid 1980s). She was a real character, full of stories. Always gave me a cup of tea, and she had this hilarious Doberman who would back up and try to sit on your lap.

I learned to jump on a Connemara pony that she bred and raised.

I'd love to read a bio of her!

Wedding Caterer

I roared with laughter at the post recommending the Santa Barbara School District Food Services Dept! Hilarious! Can we all stand up and say YUM! So a wedding can be catered by the lunch ladies? Does the wedding cake get served up on one of those plastic trays with sections for your different food groups? Does everyone get to eat with a recyclable SPORK?

Vacant land soon fronting the ocean? A lovely beach has decaying shacks removed?
The developer continues to pay property taxes.
No additional vehicular traffic.
After ten years of decay, this is a positive outcome for the public and the neighbors.

Mr. Caruso can take all the time in the world to develop or sell his property, formerly known as the Miramar Hotel. And he probably will.....take his time.

Santa Barbaran Biography

2012-12-06 07:53 AM

@NATUREBOY: Jonesy arrived in SB in the mid-1960s. He was a colorful dresser. A typical outfit might include bright yellow pants, a purple shirt, red & green scarves, etc. He had quite an eye for the ladies, the younger and prettier the better. He spent his days traipsing up and down State Street, flirting with women and interacting with the transients, as they were called then. He carried around around a tambourine with which he made a lot of racket. Tourists and locals alike regarded Jonesy as "local color," which he definitely was. He may or may not have been a drunk, I don't remember.

But he did have a nasty temper, and cops investigated many instances of fisticuffs and screaming matches between Jonesy and other vagrants. Nothing serious, though, until he got himself stabbed at Wendy's after provoking a fight with another jerk who turned out to be armed with a knife.

The people who didn't find Jonesy charming were downtown workers, who got to witness his schizophrenic personality first-hand as he made his rounds, and his overtly sexual overtures were not deemed to be cute by a lot of women he bothered.

And then came the unpleasantness with the child-molestation allegations. But by then, Jonesy had worn out his welcome with a lot of people due to his temperament, so when the alleged pedophelia came to light and he found himself the subject of a criminal investigation, Jonesy hit the road.

Jonesy was only in SB for a few years, but he really does remain one of our most unforgettable characters. Not the kind you'd like to bring home for dinner, but unforgettable nonetheless.

John Jones, Jones Precision Wheels. He used to be on the road with the pros, got tired of being away and now only occasionally takes a break to crew for a particular race at the request of an old friend. Very nice guy, a delight to talk with, loves working on wheels more than anything else, but happily does it all and does it well. Very low key, he is not likely to tell you about himself - but he can do anything and the pros trust his judgment and his work, so I know I can, too. He would be the first to say there are quite a few fine bike mechanics in our community - true enough and one more indication of the quality of the man.

Home Depot 6' Douglas Fir - $25 absolutely beautiful. We elevate it on a sturdy plastic box for added height and also it leaves room on the floor for gifts. Cover the box with a beach towel or a blanket. Decorate it and SMILE. Ours is fresh and smells wonderful. Feed it a liter bottle of 7-up and it will last until way after Christmas. We need a small tree because we have a small house and we want room for friends and family to be in the DR,

Delgado's - (Same as Pepe's and Delgado's restaurants)

We had a large beautiful wedding July 2011 and were so happy with Delgado's! Our guests still talk about the great food! Christina from Delgado's is so nice to work with! They served really good and healthy food. We also had appetizers and drinks served (while we were taking photos) in a courtyard between the ceremony and the formal seated meal that were amazing!

We go to dinner at Delgado's monthly now and it reminds us of our wedding too! It's so nice to see Christina and her staff that worked at our wedding when we go for dinner too!

Delgado's is family run and I love that they brought their good energy to our wedding too!
