Santa Barbaran Biography

2012-12-05 10:04 PM

My favorite person to learn more about is Marguerite Doe Courtney Rogers Ravenscroft. She was the next door neighbor of Ganna Walska back in the day. She was born into wealth in Northern California in the late 1890s, but moved here as soon as she was 18. She volunteered to drive an ambulance in World War I (as many privileged young Americans did). When she returned to Santa Barbara, she raised horses and dogs. She supported animal shelters all over the US. Many humane society buildings still bear her name (including the pet memorial area at the SB Humane Society), though she's been gone over 40 years.

Santa Barbaran Biography

2012-12-05 09:40 PM

@707: I heard that Jonesy died some years back. Despite his colorful persona, he was not a nice man. Not at all.

Jonesy was a local street person who wore flamboyant outfits and flirted outrageously with the ladies. He also had a hair-trigger temper and could turn extremely nasty at the drop of a hat. One time he picked a fight with the wrong transient at Wendy's, when it was on State Street where part of Paseo Nauseam is now, and wound up getting seriously stabbed.

Perhaps everyone who remembers Jonesy fondly forgot about the pedophilia allegations leveled at him--allegations that were never proven, but nevertheless backed up by more than one little girl. Jonesy lived in or near an old school bus in a vacant lot off of Cabrillo Boulevard. It was there that police said he made sexual advances toward several elementary school-age little girls. As the criminal investigation began Jonesy simply slunk out of town, never to return to SB. I heard years later that he'd finally died.

Jonesy was "colorful," to be sure, but he was a parent's worst nightmare come true.

Santa Barbaran Biography

I second Martha Graham, though her autobiography is wonderful enough. Also Ganna Walska, and the man who was briefly her husband, the "White Lama" Theos Bernard, who disappeared mysteriously in the mountains of Tibet or someplace like that. I'd love to know more about Huguette and Andree Clark and their beautiful young ostracized French mother. Has Vanity Fair done a story on them yet? I think they did live in Bellosguardo early in the century (I mean the last century). The Tea Gardens (I know, not a person, but quite a character). Mason B. Mason! yes.

Bicycle Repair Shop

I also suggest Bici Centro. It reminds me of the UCSB bike shop which I also love but is limited to the UCSB community.

Also, I sure like Varsity Bikes in IV. The owner loves his work and he's done a few repairs for me over the years that I didn't feel comfortable doing myself.

If everyone would fish an old bike out of their garage and use it for short trips to the store and to their job, our town would go from great to unimaginably great. I love seeing my friends and neighbors out on bikes. People are their best selves when they are walking or on a bike.

Special Needs Churches

2012-12-05 08:37 PM

I appreciate UCLAFANATIC's comment. I am a 3-4th grade Sunday school teacher at Santa Barbara Community Church. Elementary school children are with their parents for the first ~15min of the service then they break into a two groups (1st & 2nd, 3rd &4th) for about 30 min, then they break down into small classes of 5-8 kids each for another 30min. There's lots of parental involvement, and groups are small enough so that it's not overwhelming for the kids or the adult helpers. If some kids need extra help, more helpers can be assigned...and I've utilized extra help before. Elementary Sunday school is at the 9am and 11am services. Please drop on by and see if it works out for your family.

Both our kids went through Marymount, and we feel very fortunate for their experiences and the foundational skills they acquired. The staff and teachers were great, and there was a nurturing environment that helped them in every way. Lots of sports participation, excellent academics for a broad range of kids, JudeoChristian ethical sensibility/values, plus nice teachers and staff who, in my opinion, watched over our kids extremely well - all make Marymount a special environment. It prepared our kids well for high school (they chose public high school), and college. We recommend Marymount highly.

Bicycle Repair Shop

Stored outside for several years could mean a lot of things. Could be as drastic as toss them in the dumpster or recycle them if possible. Steel rusts, cables corrode, tires rot, aluminum oxidizes. It sounds to me like take them to almost any shop for a cost/benefit evaluation. If it takes several hundred $ to fix them it might be better to scrap them and buy new.

610 - I'd like to suggest for you and anyone else with lack of knowledge about the basics to go by one of the local shops and ask them to teach you. It's no fun (and can turn you off to riding) to be stuck somewhere far from home with no ability to fix a relatively simple issue. Knowing how to fix a flat, deal with a broken spoke, and those kinds of things can get you home safe and sound and keep you interested enough to go out again.

The police told me to call the land lord in the morning that day, and it was a good thing because HERBERT was on his way over there. Apprently though HERBERT offended other neighbors and he was already in trouble for that. HERBERT just choose to blame me for everything prehaps it's because I figured him out to a degree. We were friends though and I enjoyed the friendship. I think it's his drinking he turns into a real jerk when he drinks. It's too bad I hope it doesn't result in all of us getting tossed they all kind of treat me bad because I'm on section 8 plus I'm not all there like they are..lol When HERBERT moved in a few years back he told all of us that he had done hard time and was from South Central I think he likes to intimadate people and be in charge. Isn't clearing the property a pre-condition to maintaining development rights?

(I am NOT addressing the validity of the development or Caruso's plans/games.)

Independent 11/21/12:
"Meanwhile, as of Monday, county staff had approved non-expiring permits for the project, according to Dennis Bozanich, assistant to the County CEO. Caruso is only required to do two things to be entitled to the permits: demolish the property and pay $1.4 million, which he already has done. He has until March 2013, but can ask for extensions of his current permits until 2015. While originally he promised to demolish the buildings on the property when a bed tax rebate was in place, Caruso will “probably move forward with demolition” regardless, Middlebrook said. He said the citizens of Montecito deserve to get rid of the dilapidated buildings.

The move would be sound business as well, as the non-expiring entitlements make the property much more valuable."

We just bought our Christmas Tree from Lane Farms last night. It may not have been as cheap as home depot, but we paid $60.00 for a 6-7 ft Grand Fir. Grand Firs are usually the more reasonable type, and smell so good! Our kids (us too!) had fun running around looking at all the different trees trying to find the right one! We bought kettle corn and treats, and they gave us a couple of bundles of trimmed branches that we will make a wreath out of. May not be the cheapest, but its great for the memories!

If you purchased a property, but couldn't afford to build on it right away, would it be "fair" if you you were prevented from building on it later? NO. As long as the property owner pays their property taxes, it's their property to do what they choose. Anyone who thinks it should just be left empty because they prefer it that way, is the very definition of NIMBY.

Fresco has awesome food, I second (third?) that one. Make sure you get a large tray of their Macaroons; a huge hit with our guests!

Also consider a Santa Maria style Tri-Tip BBQ, it is less costly per person than most other catering (originating as a way to feed lots of hungry ranchers cheaply) and it seemed to go over VERY well at our wedding. The out of town guests especially loved it. They usually have their own trailer and cook it in the parking lot.

We had been to a LOT of weddings in the couple of years before our wedding, and when we started talking food for ours, we realized that only the extremely good (think Emeril-quality) or extremely bad food was even remembered. We went cheaper on the food with the BBQ, and it even ended up being such a big hit that people STILL rave about it, 8 years later! And I don't want to make it sound like it was paper plates and plastic forks; our reception was actually very elegant and the BBQ still worked wonderfully.

California Highway Patrol Officers ...

2012-12-05 04:22 PM

It was my understanding that you can only get served at that ultra expensive dinner place called The Wiilows. Now they are arguing for a more liberal alcohol distribution. This incident (where the driver probably drank somewhere else, or from a flask), should be more than enough to drop that entire arguement. Highway 154 was never that safe to begin with, (think of runaway stagecoaches), but it it is getting very busy (what with the 101 closures off and on), and people just don't know how to drive on it. Big rigs running down the pass with no brakes, motorcycles weaving in and out of traffic, big buses out on a wine tour, and by the CHP 's own admissions they don't have enough staff or patrol cars to adequately patrol those areas. I realize that highway 246 was the origin of this post, but I felt the need to stand up on my soapbox and preach. I'm done now!

616, honestly you're overlooking the fact that for many of us, health declines around that age. So it's not so much a lack of interest that sets in but a lack of ability to continue to the do the same things that you were able to do at a younger age or always assumed you'd be able to do because you stayed in shape and kept yourself healthy.

Until you reach that age, please don't judge. It's hard to explain and to show people how life really CAN change for people. Not all of us are lucky enough to have interests at that age AND be able to physically be well, despite past health.

It's a commercial property that was developed over 100 years ago to be a hotel. It was purchased with the intention to rebuild and modernize it. If you don't want to live near a hotel, you should never move into that neighborhood.

Your desire to take away someone else's rights to use their own property the way it was intended -- and zoned for -- is exactly the problem, and we are all paying the price of Montecito NIMBYism.

Check into the many wine tour vans that operate in SB. Many of them go to a lot of the wineries you likely have free tasting for and they aren't anywhere near $100 per person.

That said, why not just spend the money to stay in Solvang or the valley overnight and do a couple of small tastings per day. As long as you stick to the tastings and don't do it on a totally empty tummy, you should be fine. The tastings they give you are less than half a full glass of wine. That's not impaired unless you have a medical condition or something.

Get creative and enjoy a nice weekend in wine country.

It seems like every time the power lines or underground transformers are damaged the fire department stands around for hours waiting for the Edison people to get there and turn off the power. Then the fire fighters go back to their station and the Edison people get to work fixing the problem. It seems like a collossal waste of time for the Fire Department. Does the huge facility at the airport have a staff that goes out into the field to fix things? Or do they just count the money out there at the airport?

Stored inside or outside? Often times people really neglect their bikes, take them in after letting them "sit around" for a few years, and expect everything to just need a dab of grease and oil. Depending how long the bikes were used/ to what extent, they could require a plethora of parts/service to get them to what many cyclists would call good working order. It also helps to know if these were cheap or expensive bikes to begin with and whether or not said service is worth it.

I know you didn't really ask for that, but it's something to think about when you take them into a shop and ask for service. Similar thing happens when you take your car to the mechanic, generally get more suggestions than you originally bargained for.

Im happy for the Paradise Residents. Let me highjack this Posting to complain about the extremely poor road condition of Refugio Road(South of Camino Cielo to the 101) Just for grins I counted the potholes in a 2-mile stretch above Circle Bar B..300 in that short section of road!! Im defining a pothole as larger than 1 square foot and over 1 inch deep. The road hasnt had any regular maintenance for decades(Since Reagan was President)
It's a shame that visitors to the former Western White House have to get their teeth rattled out of their heads! I'm sure that Supervisor Doreen Farr's road is in much better condition.

My son got married last May and we had reception at Maritime Museum. We ended up using Palazzio's since they too don't have a kitchen. Very affordable (and huge portions) and they do all the catering. Much less pricey and the food was delicious. Maritime wants a caterer to have a million dollar bond in place so check with your venue coordinator if this is required for your venue. We didn't find this out until last minute and that is why we had to change our caterer. They couldn't get a bond in time. Little problems like this arise.

Here's the deal. It depends on what you are looking for. Not immediately but afterward.

if you are looking to get back into cycling and you want your bike now to work well for more serious use, then I'd say (assuming we are talking road bikes) go to Fastrack. It's not even close.

All the racers go to Fastrack. Dave knows his stuff and will take care of you NOW but also in the future. I've gone in there and said hey Dave can you help me with X. He'll just look at it. Get some tool and bam! It's done. No charge.

Dave is about being super customer service as well having great bikes and gear. It's not a mistake that most of the people riding as exercise wear Fastrack jerseys.

Dave was Lance's mechanic and he was an Olympian himself. All to say that Dave knows his stuff, is a great guy and totally focused on customer service.

If you just want to have your bike work and that's it, go wherever. Bruce is a nice guy at Hazards. He's more of a triathlon shop. Road riding is Fastrack.

@552 you are correct, I have a relative who got a DUI on a bicycle in downtown Solvang once.

@491, a cab would be the most expensive option. It cost me $20 to just go from the SB Airport to Kmart in Goleta, and the SYV taxis have even higher rates IIRC.

There is a small SYV Transit bus service with 2 routes in the valley, however they won't get you to the door of most of the SY wineries (although it could drop you off in downtown Los Olivos):
syvt dot com

There are several companies doing wine tours of the valley, but most of them are around that $100 you state.
These guys operate a hop-on/hop-off bus service to the wineries:

One simple fact - it is nearly impossible that he got served at the Casino - alcohol is strictly monitored - you get carded even if you look like you're 40. He is responsible for sending 10 people to the hospital, wrecking 4 vehicles and all that law enforcement and recovery. I can only hope that justice is served and that he gets the maximum sentence (which may likely not be very long) and has to pay restitution.

part 3 from posts: 350463 and 350509
My youngest is in the 4th grade, she has been at Garden Street Academy also since kindergarten. She has had special issues with speech, being shy and with reading. Her facilitator each year has been encouraging and helpful. She is in a class of 16 students, with 3 facilitators, which allow for plenty of one on one time with her. She is now a master reader and is encouraged by her facilitators to participate more in groups, they even went out of their way to make up games so that my child would feel more comfortable. My child goes to speech therapy away from school once a week, one of my daughters facilitators took the initiative to go with me to my child's evaluation and ask her speech therapist what her facilitators could do for her at school on a one on one basis. They even asked for her speech therapist to send "homework" with my daughter, so they can help her at school one on one. I am glad I found this school.

Many of you are claiming the casino has culpability in this. How? Could it be that this guy, like many others, brought in liquor in a flask? The rules are so draconian for the Chumash casino that the control has been wrested from them. I sincerely doubt that this kid bought a drink at a bar at the casino. I bet one of his friends bought him a cheap bottle of something and he drank it sneakily.

Bicycle Repair Shop

2012-12-05 12:29 PM

When bikes are stored of extended periods the cables corrode and can seize or at least become rough as can the housing. The plastic on the housing can become brittle and the rubber of the tires, tubes and brake pads can dry out becoming hard and cracked. So simply lubing the chain and airing the tires likely won't do it. But if you haven't already done so yourself, this is the first step I would take and take a good look at the rubber for cracking and test out the shifting and braking. If they're poor then head to a shop for parts or service.

That said, I don't think there is a lot of difference between any of the shops in this town. They're offer pretty average service, I've seen good and bad service our of each of them, so take your pick. Cranky's, Hazard's, FasTrak, Bob's... meh.

The staff of our schools are well educated, work hard for their pupils, and all of them are dedicated to our democratic way of life, which can only be delivered by public education. I believe you should take the tuition monies you are planning to spend and bank it for their supplemental education.
I do know some science professors at UCSB who have placed their children in public schools with the comment that they must learn to live with all of our citizens, if they wish to be functioning adults.

My second daughter is in the ninth grade, started kindergarten in the first year that the school transitioned. She is extremely proud of her school and is doing amazing well. I just went to her parent/teacher/student conference last Wednesday and as always am amazed at her progress. I love the one on one attention she get's from her facilitators, and she is doing fantastic! She does amazing in math, and I mentioned to her facilitator that I would like to have her challenged even more so, and her facilitators response was of encouragement that my daughter could handle the next level!

Home Depot has Douglas Fir for $19.95. I think that is for 5-6 ft., but don't quote me on that. It was probably $29.95 for 7-8 ft. And there are smaller trees if you don't have the space.

While the Costco tree sounds beautiful, those of us looking for "economical" cannot afford a Nobel Fir. Douglas Fir will have to do...

And also thanks to the person who said "you are only committing to one year" - that is true and something I need to tell myself. I keep getting all worried I'm going to make the wrong choice, but it sounds like there are a lot of really good schools, I just need to find the one that fits. Even if it doesn't end up being the first one we choose. Q for those that have gone the Montessori route - can someone please tell me what the difference is between SBM and M Center? I take it these are not owned/run by the same director but are the same philosophy? Also - I have heard that the ratio of girls to boys at Montessori is way more girls than boys, is that true?

What are you considering "Senior"? I rarely use my cell phone so I signed up with Tracfone. One year of service for $99.00 and they gave me 1400 minutes, including the LG phone. No monthly bill and the phone is easy to operate. No need here for a smart phone...just something to use when I need to make a phone call. $8.25 per mo. is cheap and I will not need more than 1400 minutes. If I do I can buy as many as I want. When I renew service next year for $99.00 Tracfone will give me more.

If you check yourself, and the other parent can do the same, it will be a lot less painful for all of you.

Castillo Underpass

Once upon a time the spring that is located just a short distance towards the ocean from the underpass in question was capped off by the Potter Hotel. It had been a Chumash "healing spring" for centuries, and if you want a solution for this issue of drainage it is to open up that spring, divert the water, thereby choosing its course instead of it finding a way up at the low point on Castillo. It is no doubt contaminated water now, after the St Paul Cleaners debacle poisoned the downtown groundwater, but there could be SOME way to relieve the natural pressure and keep it from flowing into the underpass.

Costco has beautiful trees for $45. While you are checking out, tell them that you want to purchase a Christmas tree. They will hand you a ticket, which you take to a truck in the parking lot. Hand them the ticket, and they will bring out your tree and load it for you. We did this two years ago, and were a little skeptical about not being able to pick our own trees. However, it didn't matter - my group bought two trees, and they were both the most beautiful trees we have ever had. You can't get an 8' tree at that price anywhere else in the area.

Has anyone dealt with the SB Single Family Home Review Board? Who are they to decide what "looks good"? Why are their qualifications any better than my own architect's? It is too subjective, and they can kill a project or force you into something you don't like. And certainly adds big costs to every project in extra time for the architect to present and go through multiple rounds of changes, or piles of paperwork.

If you go over your minutes, it automatically bills you another 10.00. It is very simple to make and receive calls, but I have to say that the rest of the built-in systems are as complex as any others and so manipulating them is still mysterious to a non-technical person. The number keys are huge (though they announce themselves, which may be annoying to some people) and I can recommend it for basic phone needs. I received good service from the Snapfon company.

Often the reason one parent wants more than an equitable 50% custody arrangement (which is fair to both parents and healthiest for the child or children) is that more custody time = more child support $. There are some parents out there who will try for keeping the kids M-F and "let" the other parent (usually the father) have the child/children every weekend. With school aged children that means the one that has the kid(s) M-F has less "face-time" with them, has free weekends to date and do whatever else they want, and gets more child support $ than they would if it was an 50/50 split. These types of incentives are why divorce lawyers make the big bucks.

The spin that Caruso and others try to employ, blaming regulations and neighbors is PURE BS. Yet most people won't take the time to examine the record, and learn how the rules were BROKEN and Causos project was FAST-TRACKED despite repeated concerns at the time. Caruso knew then as he knows now that he has NO INTENT to build this project, he KNEW THEN where the market was heading, he has waited for the right time to flip it, and he will, just like TY Warner did. Some of the mediators in SB are not known for their "fairness" and often do more than "mediate" making an attorney essential. I feel sorry that one parent wouldn't want to make a fair go at allowing their child to spend 50% of their time with the other parent. Some parents don't give a crap at all and leave their children to go on about their own selfish business. As far as a referral - I have heard great things about Paul Capritto. If he can't (or won't) take your case he will be able to suggest a great alternate. Understand that these attorneys have "friends" everywhere. Of course the biggest roadblock to building is the neighbors. We're here. We'd like to retain what open space remains. Duh. I'm usually irritated by development activity on any large open space, because I know yet another field is being lost, and yet more humans are being crammed in, with their resulting impact on infrastructure. Redevelopment of existing space is different, and can be OK, if the developer acts responsibly. Playing the game 413 describes is neither responsible nor considerate, so we're entitled to be irritated by that too. It ain't neighborly to negatively impact your neighbors before you even move in.

The glass is holding rainwater at a depth of more than 2" of rain because it is tapered so the amount of space or area at the opening is not reflective of the area at the bottom. That is why a proper rain gauge is necessary to determine the actual amount of rainfall over a given area by using depth as a measuremnt, i.e. "inches of rain" falling on a given uniform surface area.

Private Grade School

2012-12-05 09:20 AM

I've heard positive and negative experiences at every school in town. I was very involved with one private school but ended up sending my child to Garden Street Academy because of their educational philosophy. They offer a progressive education focused on the whole-child. They teach 'authentic' learning that is multi-disciplinary and project based. That means that the kids will do a unit that brings math, science, history and writing into one project. I can see the great results of this in my child's education. There are lots of good choices and it will depend upon what works for your child and family. I feel that Garden Street Academy has a unique strength in really focusing on what works best for each individual child and helping them thrive. My child absolutely loves it and I can see how they help nurture her critical thinking skills along with tons of enrichment in art, dance, music and theater.

Child Custody Lawyer

2012-12-05 09:15 AM

Any attempts to be reasonable between two people who are obviously getting a divorce for adversarial reasons is difficult at best. The problem is that many so called divorce lawyers simply capitalize on this strife by running up and churning up huge legal bills over nothing issues much like the proverbial saying about throwing gasoline on a fire instead of water. Unfortunately many unethical divorce lawyers are more interested in bleeding their clients dry, blaming the other attorneys and the other spouse/client, because that is how they make lots of money. In this scenario, the only way a reasonable settlement may be reached on any issue, is when the clients run out of money and assets to pay the $250 to $500 dollar and hour fees churned up over nothing!

Private Grade School

2012-12-05 09:12 AM

We went into our son's first school experience not wanting a public school. We should have visited our local public school before making that decision. We put him in a small private Christian school mentioned in previous posts. It wasn't for him because he couldn't sit for three hours straight as a five year old. He finished out his K year there and we moved him to the neighborhood Goleta school which turned out to be great for him. He's now in high school and doing well.

I don't think I would have valued the public schools had I not had such a bad experience in the private school first. The public schools do have a lot to offer and the parent involvement does make a CRITICAL difference.

I would encourage you to visit a number of schools before you make a decision and remember that you're only committing to one year. If it doesn't work that first year, change the situation. Best of luck in your decision.

I truly feel that this school fosters a balance of academic success and enrichment classes and experiences. The students at Marymount embrace community and are such a great group of kids! I highly recommend looking at this beautiful campus and talking to some of the excellent teachers there on staff when making your decision. Best of luck!

Shakespeare eloquently put it thus:

The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come..."

Castillo Underpass

2012-12-05 08:56 AM

Skip all of the population, global warming and other attempts to turn the fiasco of that underpass into some kind of political agenda. The story is simple. The state did not want to spend the money to construct the undercrossing correctly in the first place , like the Garden street undercrossing which allows no seepage and intrusion and only floods from above ground surface run-off in very heavy rain. The number and incredible costs of the attempts to correct or belatedly "fix" the defective Castillo street undercrossing far exceeds what it would have cost to have done it right. This is a classic lesson in the incompetence in governmental bureaucracy that should be used as a life lesson. I know Frank Frost would agree with this assessment. He always advocated for doing it right in the first place.

STRAY That is the new technique used by developers here. They propose a lavish and profitable developement and the county or city through their land use processes and public imput, impose a number of conditions and restrictions for the good and the aesthetics of the community. The developer then does nothing, allows the property to run down or remain in a deplorable and usightly condition using all manner of excuses, typically the economy, financing, etc. Then after the eyesore has antagonized the community and they clamour for something to be done, the developer goes back to the City or County and has all of the restrictions and conditions originally imposed (and typically opposed by the original developer at the time) removed from the project to enhance profit and to the community's detriment. This is the now preferred method of evading developmental regulations.

"The-many-years-long-big-hole-in-the-ground", aka the former Hotel Carrillo (now the Klimpton Canary Hotel), and the boarded up Hotel California of the La Entrada project should have been history lessons for the 3 developers of the Miramar Hotel.

Ten years ago, I think politicians and Montecito neighbors got caught up in the details of what's going to be built next, and not the details of razing the Miramar structures as a first step. There were talks about the cottages being historic, and if I recall correctly, they were offered by some owner to anyone for free if one moved them at one's own cost. None disappeared.

After demolition, if the Miramar lands remains vacant, the public wins. If a hotel never gets built, it's not our problem, it's the developers' problem.

Rollover Accident

Well, we are already paying the firefighters and cops to do this job- respond to accidents. One of the reasons that it would be difficult to bill for the response is that the billing rates for public employees are pretty high. If we could choose from among several companies competing for our response dollars, the cost would be much lower. I guess we could decide as a society which "emergencies" we want them to respond to- car accidents yes, hikes into the back country no.

Excellent academics, exciting teaching and a positive environment that has fostered leadership, creativity and a love of learning. I don't think having a couple of years of leadership from a CEO or chief is good for any organization. Then the new person comes in with new policies and ideas and a lot of energy is wasted implementing them. A lot of companies and organizations have been ruined with this approach. How is HP doing these days?

Public safety employees make up less than 25% of the workforce but require up to 50% of the pension money that the County has to pay. Does this seem fair, and affordable?

I too agree with Rob Egenoff's recommendation. In 1994 we moved into Cold Spring School District so our soon -to-be-born son could attend Cold Spring School - one of the best public schools in the Country. Cold Spring is a great school. Our first son attended until 7th grade. Our second son attended Cold Spring until 2nd grade when we decided that for him, Crane School was maybe a better choice. We were extremely happy as well with Crane School. One key element is to determine what does your child need? Every child is different. Frankly, other than those buildings deemed "historic" by the County (I can't remember anymore if there were there any) and as sad as it is to lose buildings that are a part of Montecito's history, Schrager, Ty Warner and Caruso should have demo'd the buildings long, long ago. The County should have required it for health and safety reasons. Anyway, its a start. But where's the story? Seems to me, if I had everything in place to begin redevelop, I'd issue a press release announcing the commencement of construction and be there with distinguished members of the community to move the first dirt. . . .

Child Custody Lawyer

How about you and your significant other (spouse?) sit down with a mediator and try to work it out? The Superior Court offers free mediation and attorneys are not needed. Most custody cases handled by attorneys turn into costly fiascos which can empty your bank account and leave you and your child scarred for life.

The $10,000 to $100,000.00 you will spend (trust me on this one) is your child's education money and your retirement.

Obviously at some point in life you hooked up, really dug each other and had a child. Can you return to that civility for the sake of the child?

Ride the shuttle bus up to Yogurtland. Everyone gets to have yogurt and three toppings each. Ride shuttle back to your car.

Then go see the latest and best kids' movie. The kids will sleep like logs. Cost for the entire family: maybe $300, tops. Now, that's a memorable and fun day. No boredom of being on the Highway, either.
