UCLAFANATIC - that was not the issue about abortion. It was the banning of abortion in all cases including rape and incest. The decision should be made by family and doctor - not by family and government.

I wish all parents did love their children. Not all do. Some physically and emotionally abuse their children -- even torture and kill them. A pregnant girl might not feel safe telling her parents. I'm glad Planned Parenthood is available.

Here's a question for the ladies. What is the problem with a minors parents having any ability to know that their child is having an abortion? Here's my deal. The parents love the child. PP doesn't. The parents understand their ability to help or not and they can all make a decision based on a relationship. Help me understand why women fight that, because they don't love the kid. The parents do. BTW I think it's easy for a stranger to plant seeds or fear into a child when things are confusing for the child. The child and parents live with the consequences, whereas PP doesn't.

348, it sometimes feel like we're living in the 60s, yes. What with the large wage gap between womens' and mens' and the recent laws passed in a lot of states that regulate a woman's body and even punish her for seeking medical treatment that even pertains to an abortion (see ultrasound bills that passed in 2012 for this)....yeah. It does seem like we're back in the 60s. I am not under the illusion that you mean that, but maybe think about it next time you make a flip response about women's rights. It's an important subject and deserves more than the response you gave it.

Learning is a proactive thing, sometimes. Get out there and get interested in what is happening in people's lives outside of your comfort zone....otherwise we can talk about irritating and silly.

I think it's cute how people think there's not pornography produced in our county. I say if people want to bring jobs here, I'm all for it. I'm not a paid subscriber, so I can't post a link, but if you look at the LA Times' recent articles on this issue, it's pretty interesting. I don't think they'll be coming here anytime soon. Particularly because it's expensive to make a move and they are already find loopholes to this law. (Again, google it for details.) I think the most compelling argument against this law is that the performers themselves didn't want it to pass. One woman was interviewed and said she felt condoms were fine for normal activity but since filming often includes hours of...uh...activity, most women would be hurt by them physically. I hadn't thought of it that way, but it makes sense.

I have also felt very frustrated with Chancellor Yang re: what seems to be tacit approval of what goes on in IV. But in reality, he has little control of what happens off-campus. He can tighten up on UCSB students who break the law, but falling off a cliff isn't a crime. Unlike this boy, a lot of the 20 something's ( and younger) in IV aren't UCSB students and are drawn there like a magnet. IMHO, any parent from anywhere other than SB that sends their kid to SBCC and then lets them live in IV is a fool. People in IV from out of the area are the worst. Don't know what Yang can do about that. Maybe the public needs to protest!

Ran the half today. IT was great. logistics perhaps with the bigger crowd messed up the start time which led to more time in the heat of the day. Also if people were training in cooler places and then where running in the heat but trying to make their goal time, that's trouble. Just saying lots of possibiities, but it could just be sheer more people. It was a great event and run very well. Did I mention I killed my best time..... :)

I'm personally against abortion but to think it will go away in this country is ridiculous (straw man by Dems). I personally don't care if abortions are legal, I just hope more wouldn't do it. I completely agree that Republicans were total aholes about womens stuff. Just say it's not going away and we'll decide as a nation (we have representatives for states and people right?) how to manage it. It's not going away. ANd talk about what really is impacting all which is the economy and jobs. Total screw up by Republicans. What scares me as a conservative is "This is the best people we have" Complete jackwagons and stupid people Weird. The good thing (good for the country too) is I think the next gen of Republicans will be younger, minorities, more worldly, etc. Good for Republicans but also good for America since we could use moderates.

341529 - fortunately the votes by women in the election completely debunk your claim. And the only reason women's issues are in the news is because after the 2010 election, republicans in power decided to go after abortion. Thus it is not made up from whole cloth but by the very real actions and statements of republicans. My guess is you are a man.

I visited Minneapolis/St. Paul a few years ago. The University there was trying to crack down on student drinking by publishing a list of the "worst" party houses in the area. How did the students react? They competed to get ON the list by throwing ever bigger and wilder parties! Utterly predictable. The law of unintended consequences. Mourn the young man, but don't look to this as a catalyst for change.

Open grates can make many dogs nervous, and that is why training on grates is a part of my routine for a new puppy or dog. For practice, try out the bridge in La Mesa Park. Many dogs don't like seeing the ground through the bridge, but with training they learn to handle it. Give 'em a treat every couple feet and make it fun to be on the bridge/grate. In my case, my dog loves the beach so much, nothing would stop her from going down the steps, no matter what they're made of (and she's been trained on grates.) Can't wait to try them out!

483 - I think you are mistaken to the tune of 80: 0 for states versus the supreme court in 2011 alone. 80: NUMBER OF ANTI-ABORTION LAWS PASSED BY THE STATES IN 2011 | Via the Guttmacher Institute: “In the first six months of 2011, states enacted 162 new provisions related to reproductive health and rights. Fully 49% of these new laws seek to restrict access to abortion services, a sharp increase from 2010, when 26% of new laws restricted abortion. The 80 abortion restrictions enacted this year are more than double the previous record of 34 abortion restrictions enacted in 2005—and more than triple the 23 enacted in 2010. All of these new provisions were enacted in just 19 states.” What should I say about an adult not having enough interest to get the facts.

Have you requested specific cleaning instructions from the landlord or property management company? That's where I'd start. I doubt that's "old fashioned linoleum". Nowadays it's a diff formulation; most sold is the brand Marmoleum. It takes a special cleaner and a special sealer. Go to a floor dealer and get the right products if your landlord can't tell you about how to clean it. Do not use the Floormate on Marmoleum floors.

UCLAFANATIC - women used as tools by Democrats - that is a complete distortion. Since the 2010 election, women's issues including the defunding of PP has been at the top of the republican agenda - NOT jobs. They would not support Obama's jobs bill, but many states introduced anti-abortion measures, including the infamous ultrasound bill. And in the 2012 election - “If Rick Santorum is not the nominee, all the attention to these issues is going to evaporate,” said Whit Ayres, a Republican pollster. “The probability of social issues playing a significant role in the general election is minimal.” Many women who were going to vote Romney in this election changed their minds when Republicans started talking about rape - and those people were defeated. Please point the finger of blame in the right direction.

The best way to train your dog to be on a leash is to not be on the leash. Teach him to walk by your side and then calmy slip the leash on, he/she wont even notice. Also not every dog is going to be able to be leashed train, after all, like humans they too have a brain and not every brain would accept someone directing them with a rope around their neck. I for one with all the training in the world would never allow it, I dont expect the dog too either.

@274 - You are correct! On the opposite side of the freeway, waiting at the light, in the left lane is a '58 Caddy or Buick, and next to it a '57 Chevy Bel Air. This photo is definitely from '58.

457, you are VERY close minded. What it boils down to is if you can't have your way, then NO woman can get the other services they need. How can you possibly think that PP's abortions outweigh the rest of PP's benefits??? It's a very, very selfish point of view, in a very, very misguided way.

It is unfortunate that we have a permissive "anything goes" society where parents do not teach their children the difference between right and wrong. Want some weed, no problem. Want some booze, no problem. Want some other drugs, that is fine. Well don't complain when kids grow up and go to college and get hurt or worse.

Can we move past the basics? Firstly as women have moved into the work place they are more in line with Dem positions. No getting around that. Republicans should have shut the H up and just focused on the economy. Women are often used as tools and Dems do it once again. No way in H is abortion going away, yet guillible women got all riled up about it, instead of seeing that they and their families have been harmed in real life ways by Obama's tenure (real money and real jobs, not fairy tale boogie men) As for fetuses aren't children, wo the H do you or any scientist knows what REAL or not. Everyone has an OPINION,so get off the liberal high horse. Somone mentioned Guttmacher. That place will tell you the like 96% of abortions are to get out of screw ups not rape incest or medical. That's millions or screw ups that have real implications to people and our society (tax base for one). Feminists love to yell about rape, incest and medical, but aren't honest about it's really far majority use and that's to kill consesquences for actions.

If you cant afford a condom, or a test when you forget to wear one.....Why should I pay? I feel like if you cant afford very inexpensive and readily available contraception, you should hold off on sex until you can afford it.....try foreplay instead! No different if you like traveling, but cant afford airfare....you stay home, or do something local.....you dont legislate a travel tax.

Quite a few years ago I asked the owner of a small Fresno liquor store why there were so many hard-core pornographic books and magazines sold in establishments like hers throughout Fresno. She told me that a huge number of these books, but primarily magazines, were produced right there in Fresno, so selling these publications was just a way of supporting the local economy. The idea made perfect sense. Further, despite the glut of dirty books and mags, sex crimes were no higher than in other communities of the size of Fresno, and the store owners were vigilant about not selling to minors. Santa Barbara could do worse than become a porn-producing locale. But 448 is right--I'm sure the smut moguls will relocate to Simi and other parts of Ventura County, where it's lots cheaper than here. Which is too bad. We could use the tax $$$.

434p, because that's just one facet of the hair trade. There are plenty of women in India who sell hair for profit (or are aware that their hair offerings as part of their religious process ends up being sold after it is shaved off.) But there are myriad women who are held down, have their head shaved by force or are drugged and have their hair cut. But family, friends, strangers, husbands and boyfriends. To me, this is the bigger issue. Selling isn't, but the selling and the demand from the west is so huge that it in turns enables that kind of horrible crime to occur to many women on a daily basis in India (and other countries.) Unfortunately, women in developing countries often have less rights so there's not much to be done. The article could have focused on this more sinister chicken and egg cycle of demand and crime.

Just got a video shot of a pomeranian navigating the steps for the first time. It is just a normal grate with gaps nowhere near the size intimated by the OP. The little dog was a bit fearful at first 'coz he can clearly see through the grate and can't make out the bars of the grate too well. The blue stripes at the edge of the step become a target for him once he's figured out where solid ground is. If anyone wants to watch the vid just enter the Youtube URL and add /watch?v=z9M7QBXaB5w&feature=plcp

It was a great day! I watched the race from the top of the Cliff Drive hill, and saw many awesomely fit athletes, and many who aspire to that level of fitness but have a ways to go. Most folks were having a great time, and there were alot of smiles and positive attitudes. Plenty of cops and traffic control, and most drivers seemed courteous. I'm sure Santa Barbara will get a lot of good press from this excellent marathon, and the restaurants and hotels will be busy this weekend. All in all, a fairly green event with a lot of positives!

1355... I disagree with you about the intent of the OP. As I read it it is not seeking solutions but support to complain to the City and fix the problem s/he is having NOW. I am not in the habit of condoning spoiled behaviour on the part of children or even elders who ought to know better. But a more thoughtful and even tempered post would have met with considerably more sympathy rather than the ridicule. Is the response mean? I don't think so.... more flies are caught with honey than vinegar and this OP was liberally pouring on the vinegar, imho.

You want the deaths from falling to stop!?! We have a tool at our collective disposal. It's called Eminent Domain. The houses that line that cliff were mostly built with large yards (25 yards+) in the back. The yards have, and will continue to, erode into the encroaching coastline. Put it to your local government that public welfare justifies condemning these properties, tear them down and put up a barrier worthy of even a drunkards attention. Make it illegal to approach the cliffs beyond the barrier with EXPULSION FROM UCSB in the balance! That will minimize the tragedies of students falling from the cliffs to the greatest extent possible. That or force those owners, who have been renting those houses at outrageous rates to students for decades, to put up glass walled barriers as a specifically zoned requirement for those properties.

182: Sounds like legislation inspired by religion to me: "...they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights..." How dare they invoke the Creator in a public document! JK, but statements such as yours stifle discourse. For example, the establishment clause does not in any way prohibit religious influence in public policy. Most law is derived from English Common Law, which in itself comes from ancient Judeo-Christian theology. A better avenue of argument would be to discuss whether or not a fetus deserves the unalienable right to life, or at what point do we obtain that right.

What was replaced is the entire landing with metal grated steps. $800k. The platform grates freaked my lab out but as a lab he delt with it. It's a done job. GIve the work an 8 out of 10 outside the too wide grated platform.

I also find it hard to believe you can make it down 200+ steps, but can't carry your dog down the last few. The world, and the city, does not revolve around YOU or your DOG. TRACY - there are handrails. I sincerely doubt you need to SIT on the steps when there is a handrail. Like I said, let's not make a mountain out of a molehill.

You might think it's Kool Aid but when there are millions of women who rely on the services of organizations like Planned Parenthood for basic needs (breast cancer screenings, pap smears, etc.) and a great number of people in one of two political parties want to completely de-fund said organization, it's not just election BS or Kool Aid. Sorry. It is a legitimate war on the rights of women to have control over their bodies, instigated and waged by men who have no right to make said decisions.

I'm glad Chaucers is still kickin'. The last bastion of mom & pop bookstores in SB. I remember when Borders came to town--I among many were so up in arms about it...then when they closed their doors I had to laugh at myself because I was really disappointed. Without a single decent bookstore downtown, State St. has developed a severe case of The Stupid. Hopefully Amazon's adding sales tax will swing the tide and someone will open up shop downtown again...

Sally and Sue have totally remodeled, upgraded, and landscaped their house and probably won't like seeing photos of their property posted on the Internet, let alone the anal references.

You'll only get a bill from AMR if you are transported, and then it's regardless of whether you are admitted or not. If they are called but they don't transport you, it's emergency services, and all of our tax dollars pay for that. We were taught that at Red Cross first aid/CPR training. That's why you should never hesitate to call 911, but refuse transport if you or someone else can drive you safely - if it's a non-life-threatening issue only obviously.

Then just unroll them, get your dog on one, put the other in front, and when you dog gets onto that one, move the one from in back into the front position. Sure, it's time consuming and I don't even know if that would work for your dog, but it (might) solve the problem for your personal needs without making everyone else pay for it. Poocherino. You forgot to mention the tried and true "U-Turn" method. Victoria Stillwell, on Animal Planet's "It's Me or The Dog," showed, repeatedly, how effective this method can be. To the dog owners who are trying to teach your dog to "Heel:" Don't allow the dog to get even a tiny step ahead of you, while on-leash. Every time the dog starts to "forge ahead," you complete a quick U-turn. The dog soon gets the message that if s/he wants to continue on your walk, the best thing to do is to remain close to you, at your side, and not lunging ahead. Give the "Heel" command in a sweet, soft voice. Your dog is not hard of hearing. S/he will soon get the message. This tactic works extremely well in training fear-aggressive and otherwise dog-aggressive dogs. On walks, before your dog even begins to lunge at another walking dog (even if that other dog is across the street), you and your dog both complete that U-turn and then keep back-tracking where you came from, for a short way. Then, after many steps back, turn again. As soon as your dog acts like it wants to "go at" the other approaching dog, you make another U-turn. (You could tell other dog walker "We're in training.") Your dog will soon stop pulling ahead. It sounds time consuming and tedious, but it really isn't. Training your dog to pay attention to you and teaching the dog that you are the one making the decisions will make you both more relaxed and happier . . . in the long run.

it baffles me why legislature inspired by religious ideology isn't immediately discredited/thrown out. am i misinterpreting the first amendment to the constitution? i thought that government was not allowed to impede on the rights to practice your religion, and conversely religion had no place in public policy. "no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States." wouldn't marriage be considered a public trust, as well accessible health care? so sad that there are still hungry families living in the united states and yet our politicians concern themselves with matters that do not have a place in governmental discourse....

And now for something controversial. UCSB has some complicity in this and other tragedies in IV. The school keeps bringing in more and more students, increasing the overcrowding in IV, which is already the most densely populated area west of the Mississippi. If UCSB cared about the community of IV instead of padding the pockets of the staff and regents, then IV would be a safer place to live--for everyone.

Ah, 348, _you_ are living in the 60's. Planned Parenthood (a proper noun that should be capitalized, Ms. Abkin) is under attack and being defunded, as are other female health, birth control and abortion providers. **PP provides birth control that prevents abortion.** Yes indeed, they also provide abortion procedures. Have you looked at the availability of abortion procedures nationwide lately? We're simply spoiled on the west coast and don't always realize what goes on nationwide. Planned Parenthood also provides STD screening and treatment for men and women, Pap tests for cervical cancer, treatment for cervical dysplasia (pre-cancerous cell changes), and teams with cities, counties and states to provide breast cancer screening and mammograms to un- and under-insured people. Early diagnosis and treatment saves money and lives. SCOTUS may have overturned Roe v. Wade if a social conservative had been elected. The state and future of the Supreme Court is a major reason I vote, and I vote socially liberal. If you're interested in stats or info, google "availability of abortion" or "availability of abortion by state." Yes, I did get pregnant on birth control, for which I always took full responsibility. I never met a man who did so.

Okay, poster. I am with you 100%. Grates are not at all great (hoo) for a lot of dogs. Not to mention how grates always seem to promote loss of little treasures, such as keys and rings and money and such. What about high heels? (Sounds silly, but those young women will wear them EVERYWHERE.) You are right to bring this to attention. I, too, will write an email and ask whomsoever designed this thusly to replace grates with more dog and people-friendly steps. Thank you for letting me know about this.

347's solution of carrying something small to place over the grate for the small dogs to walk on sound like a good compromise to me. Yes, I have a dog - have had them all my life. But -- those steps are made for the people who pay the taxes to keep them in good shape. A little ingenuity on the part of the users to fix problems that are unique to them would go a long way to making them available to all.

Some answers to this post are plain old mean. The poster would like to enjoy the same routine she's enjoyed with her dog for a long time, I am guessing. Why so harsh towards her, or any of the rest of us who enjoy our relationship with our pets? We don't begrudge you your pleasures. We are not trying to waste tax dollars, or complain about life in Santa Barbara. We are just making an observation and pondering solutions. People who care about dogs ask a question out of genuine concern. When others pile on to criticize us, it's bullying. Plain and simple. If you don't like a question, or it makes you feel disdain for the poster you've never met, then step away from the keyboard and let people who are thoughtful handle feedback duty. Would you teach your kids to harangue and mock? I didn't think so.

The initial idea of the grates is a good one because the plan is that the sand you pick up on your shoes will be left on the beach and not track onto the stairs which creates a hazard for those using the stairs. Sand is slick and sand on cement stairs is not good. I don't know why the grate opening has to be as wide as you describe it, seems like overkill and obviously the city was not considering small dogs when they installed it. Maybe you could carry a little rolled up thin yoga mat and put it down for your dog on the grate to walk over. At least it would be a temporary solution that might work.

I see the concern. I also have ridden trail horses and horses trained for trail classes in horse shows; for which training for scary situations is a huge part (walk through tarp, water, etc.) This issue may provide lots of dog and owner education, and employment for dog trainers... I love dogs and champion adoption but the way people treat, pamper and favor their dogs is out of control. They're still dogs.

I had a small "farm" of two plants, growing in my backyard, in the early 70s. I told my parents the plants were "Japanese Maple," as the leaves look so similar (not that the 'rents would have known the difference, right?). One of my mother's smarty-pants friends, a renaissance-type lady who knew everything about canning and growing veggies and you name it, said to my parents, "You do realize that's marijuana you have growing in your backyard?" SO busted!

It's more vogue to design and build dangerous bulb outs than mere everyday sidewalks and the architects and designers can get a lot more taxpayers money for bulb-outs than plain old sidewalks. Heck they probably get more taxpayers' money "designing" speed bumps. I am sure you would be surprised at what the City pays for the "design" and "installation" of a speed bump or a "bulb-out"!

DIRTYHARRY has it right. The partiers would only see the fence as a challenge. It's not the solution, to fence off every place that has a long drop. Better to try and educate the students about the "pitfalls" (har) of drinking and partying too hard. My condolences go out to his family, friends and other loved ones. I am sure they didn't raise him up this far and expect his life to be cut short in such a tragic and senseless way. My heart goes out to them.

People still drink alcohol, then go out to enjoy to ocean. Young people are especially at risk. Have common sense and be proactive. Condolences to the family and friends of this young man.

I am so sorry for the parents of this young man and all of the others that have fallen after partying. School should be about your future, making friends and memories. For some groups it has become about partying to the excess. If safety of the bluffs is #1, then Del Playa needs some changing. #3 buy up all those beach front rentals, tear them down return it to park space #2 Enforce local ordinances on drinking and partying in Isla Vista and keep the "new bluff top park" no alcohol and patrolled. AND #1 Work with the UCSB and SBCC students to change from the party to excess attitude to party with in reason. Watch for each other and look for signs of people who can not care for themselves and take responsibility.

Guessing the grates are what is needed to keep the stairs in good and usable shape for a longer time period, noting that sand and sea are hard on steps. And that they were more likely designed for people than small dogs. Bet if you give your small dog a chance, time to test it and get past fears, it will show you that it knows how to walk on the grate.

@264: Nope. As previously stated, Butts was at State @ 101 and Hughes Bros. was at Chapala & 101. Van Etta Lincoln/Mercury was indeed at State & 101, but it was across State Street from Butts. Butts did sell MGs and Austins for a while near those marques' last gasp in the U.S., but the main MG/Austin dealer for decades was Phipps Motors at Bath & Carrillo, where some paint store is now, across the street from Rusty's Pizza. The other British car agency was Thos. I. Petersen at 36 State Street, which sold Hillman, Sunbeam and other Rootes Group cars.

Hi, Roger, it doesn't sound correct that a deceased homeless person's belongings are just tossed, IF they can be identified as the deceased person's belongings -- because, for one thing, they could help to find and notify family, which is attempted. I know there are periodic sweeps where unidentified people's belongings "left behind" during the day (on, for example, the beach) are found and tossed out, but that's a different situation.

Potassium iodide, the resident scientist sez. I remember them salting the clouds so we'd get rain, when I was a kid in Riverside County in the 50's. I think I remember that they stopped doing it because it interfered with the natural rainfall patterns -- clouds dumped their water early in some areas so that other areas didn't get normal rainfall -- something about one side of mountain ranges getting seeded clouds and rain, but the clouds not carrying any rain up over the mountain ranges.

Of course I pee in the shower, I thought everyone did. My whole family pees in the shower--it goes down the drain, with LOTS of water so there is no back up of pee. And blowing noses in the shower. Again, who wouldn't? A lot of folks are grossed out by a lot of stuff. Why is that? I have two teenage boys, we have a really clean house, nothing smells, we all pee in the shower and I tell them to blow their noses in the shower when they are stuffed up. I took my dog to the steps i have been using for well over 30 years and to my dismay my dog would not walk on the new bottom platform let alone down to the beach. All this work is done with large grating and the grate openings are way too big for most dogs. I find dogs to be cautious and avoid grates naturally and now this huge grate is preventing my dog and others i watched this morning going to the beach without being carried by their owners. My dogs legs would go through those holes and she is too heavy for me to carry down all those steep steps. I am so bummed out that i cannot go to the beach this way anymore. I can't be the only one feeling this design is totally flawed for neighborhood steps to the beach.

Chaucer's is a readers' bookstore. Now, that may sound a bit strange, but it is an unusually nice place to "browse" your favorite section (s), take a look at the back cover notes (and cover), and check out the shelf with all the other books by the same author or subject. They put the new books out to be easily reviewed in the fiction sections, have an up to date "award" book case, and the non-fiction shelves are packed with great books on every topic. One may find "deals" at Amazon, but the breadth and quality of selection that only a human brain can analyze and choose for their bookshoppers can only be found at a special place named Chaucers.

By "wrong side of town," as one reader noted above, Pico simply meant not the ideal location for a bookstore, as the successful ones have generally been located downtown (from the old Earthling to Lost Horizon), indeed, California's oldest used bookstore, The Book Den, is located downtown across from the library. The last clause of the sentence: "where few visitors were likely to stumble upon it," helps one properly interpret what was intended by the phrase.

Chaucer's is fantastic. We're lucky to have a real-world bookstore remaining in SB and doubly lucky that it's as good as Chaucer's (also, a big shout out to the Book Den!). I've been a customer for decades and have only ever had good experiences with the staff. Thank goodness we still have the opportunity to wander the aisles of a well-stocked bookshop, immersed in the smell, tactile experience, and knowledge presented to us by great books.

I can't remember if this really happened or I'm confusing it with something else, but I seem to recall a local incident a while back in which cloud-seeding went wrong and torrential rain resulted, causing flooding and other damage during a particular storm. For some reason, people either weren't immediately made aware of this, or didn't think it was that big a deal. Does anyone remember this? I think it might have been in the 1970s or '80s.

964, that's the exact opposite impression and experience I've always gotten from the staff at Chaucer's. They don't bombard you by asking if you need help every five minutes, but they do ask and if you need help, they're really great about finding things. I think if you have the attitude that our town has a "typical elitism" in the first place, you might be more apt to find that kind of thing, though since it's already in your head. Not at all trying to be snarky, I'm being serious and it doesn't come across well in print without seeming like I'm criticizing, but I think you know what I mean.

I flew Cloud Seeding missions here in Santa Barbara. The plane dispenses Silver Bromide Crystals which help water droplets coalesce and this causes the moisture to fall. We used to have a radar site up at Reagans Ranch and when a suitable wet cell (CB) would move over SB, I would be dispatched. It was usually in the middle of the night. A mann working the ground radar would direct me into these cells that would show up on the radar in the plane as well. After a pass I would have to turn around and re-seed the same cell and I can tell from personal experience, the cells were in fact much wetter on the second and third pass. It really works.

Surprised there are no vapor trail conspiracy theorists weighing in here. Yes Virginia, there is a rainman. Might even still be in the south coast water agencies budget. Silver iodide is the agent, an earlier poster got it right about creating a nucleus for condensation/raindrop formation. If you want more rain, move to Oregon Washington or BC; less rain, try California valley, average 3"/ year. Just right, just ask goldilocks!

And 1) if indeed the vessel retrieval fees end up unpaid/uncollected and being passed to the County, what proportion of the time does that happen 2) How much does retrieval/hauling cost .at least an estimate. 3) Has the County ever revisited its decision to allow anchoring in the "Fools'" Harbor area, i.e. was it a best practices idea in the first place to allow it there considering the amount of "break away" and vessels being grounded on the beach, 4)There can sometimes also be safety issues with beached vessels : leaking oil, gas as often the vessel remains unattended and remains for weeks before retrieval.... who ever gets it done.

Yellow jackets, youch! I had to make my subterranean nest of yellow jackets relocate. Every time I came down my steps to my driveway, one of the "bouncer/guardian" jackets would nail me (painfully) on my thigh! I went down late one night, rugged up in hooded rain slicker with gloves taped to my sleeves and a mask over my face (what a sight), and used a garden hose to pour water into their hole. I "watered" them once more, the next night. They hung around for a couple more months and then left and never came back. I guess they didn't like their "swamp" property after all.

I suspect every driver who squawks about bulb-outs is someone who just can't seem to respect the speed limit, no matter what. If drivers in SB weren't such speed demons, there would have been no need for bulb-outs. Poor, poor dog. And EITS, I know you mean well, but I don't think attempting to teach this guy or redeem him by having him care for animals would work. He is a seriously damaged person. The fact that he could even think of doing what he did, shows us he is not of sound mind, drugs or no drugs. As one previous comment read, this is only one sick and twisted act of his ---THAT WE KNOW OF . . . Who knows how many other animals (or small children!) he has tormented? I think years of therapy would be wasted on this individual. The best thing to do for everyone would be to remove him from the gene pool. Since that is not an option, I would vote that he be incarcerated and thus kept away from innocent and helpless creatures----for the rest of his life. I hope he is punished to the fullest extent of the law and very shortly lands in prison for life as soon as possible.

Wouldn't it be great to have a mural downtown showing a stretch of State street from the 40's and other sections from the 50's and 60's.? I remember seeing a mural on a VFW building in the central valley showing the homecoming parade for local returning Korean War vets - you could recognize the individual faces and their names were included. Bet a lot of fond memories were recalled seeing that mural. Lompoc does much the same with its historical murals. We have a start with the one of the popcorn man and some others. What a great project for local schools to unite the generations.

SRA Fees |

CalFIRE has responded and assisted on all of the past fires - (Gap, Tea, Jesusita) however, this fee does not go towards their efforts to fight fires. This fee goes toward fire prevention, and the costs associated with collecting and the fee. If it actually augmented the responses to fires, it would be easier to swallow. But it does not do that. 825P - They probably just made a mistake on your bill. They are only supposed to charge for existing "habitable" structures. (Not the possibility of future structures.) You should call them at the number listed in the original post, and have them correct your billing. 056 - CalFIRE does respond to assist with fires in SRA lands, but they do not pay for all of the costs associated with fighting fires in SRA lands - they are only responsible for protecting "watershed" - which does not include structure protection.

There are some pathologies that are blameless, meaning that the parents had no control. The case is horrendous; the parents are not necessarily to blame. Of course the alleged perp may be to blame. Just thinking of Jared Loughner... I am NOT excusing the alleged perp. I won't say more. Just wanted to take some blame off the parents, as sometimes there are conditions beyond the parents' or any one's control. And I'm saying this as a kid with no crimes or record, not as a parent.

What do they call it? "Fools' Harbor?" I counted this summer, and there were approx 50 boats anchored out there. It seems to be getting more and more popular every year to hang out in that part of our ocean. Hope the owner got to his possessions before the human scavengers did.

@186: That's funny. When I looked at this "view" and read the "farmer" line, my first thought was, "He's farming pot, I bet."
