If they are mounted outside, or if I have the window open and screen off, then it's great. The city worker was working and is the regular guy. avocado, lemon, orange, jacaranda, myriad palms, Italian stone pines on Anapumu and Los Pinos, and the monterey pines along the coast... I don't understand the fixation with "natives" so long as they grow well here... sycamores, bay laurel, cottonwood color in the creeks... so many varieties that make our city special.

Transitional Kindergarten

2012-09-15 11:08 PM

The kindergarten cut off date for all should be at least Sept 1st. I have never understood the rush. Give them the gift of time to mature, especially boys(Sorry guys it's just the way it is). These are the most important years. The foundation is set in these first years of school. If transitional K is not available find an enriching pre-K program. All kids "want to learn" they are sponges. It is offensive to say my 4 year old "wanted to learn" so we sent her to Kindergarten. I don't think being the youngest in the class has advantages, especially in high school. Children should be involved in programs that foster their growth at all ages. I always interpret " she really needed to start school, she is so advanced" as "I can't wait to have someone else watch my kid for a few hours"

I agree with 571P. We're lucky to have a very good community college that is so accessible. I lived in San Diego for some time and they have an excellent CC system there, too. Their non-credit program is much bigger than what we have here. Both my mom and dad, who are now in their 70’s, take free classes there. I'm grateful for it because it keeps them active both mentally and physically. In fact my mom volunteers at the parent ed class one day a week and she loves it. My parents immigrated from Europe and honed their English through our CC system. I hope SBCC can get through this adjustment period and come out stronger at the end. If the new president and the board of trustees listen to good advice from faculty, staff and the community, we’ll have a better adult ed program AND a better college overall.

593P Torrey Pines are the rarest pines in the U.S. They are considered to be an endangered species of tree, but grow in San Diego AND on Santa Rosa Island. (Santa Rosa Is. is just to the west of Santa Cruz Is. out here in our Channel.)

I don't think we have any Torrey Pines growing in SB County, but perhaps someone has one planted in their yard here? Anyone know? They are pretty cool-looking trees.

Meet Beau

2012-09-15 08:41 PM

One of the best dogs I ever had was a beagle/terrier (we think) mix. He was found wandering around Hope Ranch in the late 70s. Never could find the owners, but someone had taken the time to obedience train him (rare in those days).

Once his four paws hit our front yard, he never looked back. Despite the beagle part, he never wandered (no fence). He loved the frisbee and would dive to the bottom of my friend's pool to retrieve that disc. He would run for miles, up on the sidewalk, while I rode my bike in the street. We went everywhere together. God, I loved that dog.

"Beau" looks like an old soul. And definitely a keeper. Lucky you (and him)!

Bobcat Sighting

Can we all just respect the wildlife we are steadily displacing? Sure watch your pets - do not let them roam. Not only are you protecting them from all kinds of dangers - mostly human-based, like cars - but you protect the wildlife from your pets - the most important reason for controlling domestic animals (that includes feral animals, for those who don't understand the meaning of the word domestic - it does NOT mean "tame").

Transitional Kindergarten

2012-09-15 07:14 PM

Excuse me, my daughter was not reading at 4, I said she was ready to learn at 4 (and 3/4's) nor did she skip Kindergarten. The cut-off date for school entry was turning 5 by Dec 1st. She started in September and turned 5 in November, finished the year and moved onto 1st grade. Transitional Kindergarten will have some of these younger kids repeat Kindergarten for a second year--it is this second year that some kids will "skip." Repeating K would not have been good for my daughter. We considered holding her back, asked two friends who are Kindergarten and 1st grade teachers: one said, definitely, the other said, maybe, maybe not, being held back when you're ready to go can be problematic, too. So we tried it out, and she did great, academically, socially and emotionally, is in 5th grade now, and has continued to do great, so I believe it's clear at this point that it was good she started when she did. As I pointed out previously, another student in her class benefitted from waiting, so in my experience it varies from child to child.

We do have a great community college in our midst. We are a one-college district (some districts have many colleges) so the community members depend on it to further their educational goals. The educational goal of most SBCC students is not to obtain a 4 year degree. We are not alone; other community colleges have a similar student population breakdown with regards to goals. That is the beauty of a community college. Student success means something different to each student, whether it's to improve writing proficiency, catch up on computer technology or maintain independent living skills as they age. Or, move on to get a degree. Although SBCC does take a certain number of International students - fewer than 10% of the total credit population and they pay very high fees to study here - the bulk of students are from California. That said, more than two thirds of the credit students are not from the Santa Barbara area. By comparison, in the CE division, the overwhelming majority live in the SB area full time. Guess who has a bigger impact on the housing market???

These younger students are also on limited incomes and still have to pay $46 per unit to get their classes. Seniors giving up their free classes in Santa Barbara means a few more doors are kept open for eager young students elsewhere.

I've driven all kinds of vehicles, and in general, the cyclists I've dealt with are far more courteous and law-abiding than are the motorists.

I can tell you there are a huge number of motorists who have a cellphone held up to their ear or are otherwise distracted from their driving. These people are far more dangerous to themselves and everyone else on the road than two cyclists riding abreast.

Why doesn't everyone here just relax and try to avoid having any accidents today?

My internist doesn't make hospital rounds but uses the hospitalist, but she has no control over who this person is. So, someone must be emplyoying them. And, in CA, are they MD's or nurse practioners or PA's?

Also, why isn't Marion Medical Center complex in SM being investigated? They are a Catholic owned hospital, along with French Hospital in San Luis Obispo, and one in Arroyo Grande. Bobcat Sighting

2012-09-15 03:43 PM

407, according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, you are mistaken. Unless California bobcats have a different diet than do Washington bobcats, that is.

From their website:

Food and Feeding Habits

Bobcats are opportunistic and will prey upon a wide variety of animals.
Food sources include mice, voles, rabbits, gophers, mountain beaver, yellow bellied marmots, fawns; also insects, reptiles, birds, and carrion.
Domestic animals occasionally taken include house cats, poultry, small pigs, and lambs.
Bobcats hunt primarily by sight and sound, which means they spend much of their time sitting or crouching, watching, and listening. Once they’ve located prey, they stalk within range of a quick dash and then pounce.
A bobcat will cover the remains of a large kill with debris such as snow, grass, or leaves. The bobcat will revisit a carcass until most of it is consumed.

High School Sports Injuries

2012-09-15 03:35 PM

Good subject to address here. I think the issue of wearing the proper safety gear in all sports is essential and should be mandatory.

I know there are some sports where there really isn't any protection, but what about tennis? Seems like a pretty safe sport and maybe in the old days of wood rackets it was, but nowadays the ball comes with incredible velocity and one hit in the face could mean a serious eye injury, even blindness. Do the players wear safety glasses? Never that I have seen. That ball is now a serious projectile weapon and no safety gear is required on the courts. You can get safety sun glasses that don't look any different from regular ones. I would like to see the high school players protected, even one eye injury is one too many.

When I first came to SB in 1972 it seemed like the summers were milder and the winters were wetter. Now the reverse seems true.
On the other hand when I was growing up in South Texas way back when a day like today would be considered mild as I remember hot and humid days where the temperature would be over 100 degrees and it would be pouring down rain. So we really can't complain about the weather but if you are an older person I would avoid exercising outdoors and drink plenty of water.

I am a proud Hollister alumni. While the area around the school may not be as nice as say the foothill or mountain view areas, it is a very safe place for kids and having the bike path, goleta beach and More Mesa nearby is the best playground a kid could ask for. Kids can pretty much roam freely without worry. There is some very, very small time gang activity, but you won't have to worry about it unless you yourself are in a gang. Also, crime has not dramatically escalated within the past five years as some people are saying, I'm not sure where they are getting those statistics.

Usually consolidation can help in cost reduction. But all depends on the system and the people who run it.

My experience with friends and family who have been in the Cottage system hospitals and the Ventura hospital system is that Cottage is superior in every way: staff, facilities, emergency care, hospitalization care and outpatient. I have a friend who is going blind from macular degeneration because the "scan" system had her wait a few months for an "authorization' to see an eye specialist. I don't think that would happen at Cottage. They are not perfect but there is a level of caring and community that I haven't seen elsewhere. But I have never been hospitalized here or even needed emergency treatment, either.

Teen Advice

2012-09-15 01:20 PM

Personal true story - my 15 year old son had taken to staying out all night (amongst other trying behavior). Whenever he came in the door after such a night, I laid into him rather harshly. He would stomp to his room, slam the door and not come out for hours. One morning, I felt totally compelled to not react in that way. When he came in the door, I wrapped my arms around him and said, "I am so glad you are home. I love you so much." He looked at me with shock, walked quietly to his room and softly closed the door. Within a few minutes he came back out and, with tears streaming down his face, said, "Oh mom, I'm so sorry. I'll never do that again." And he didn't! Not to say that this was the end of our problems, but it was a turning point in his behavior and my approach. Concentrate on the positive, overlook as much of the negative as possible. Let consequences happen while standing by him always. Love the kid! Just love the kid!

(If necessary, click on the "Directory of TV Interviews" to find either of these gentlemen.)

I would only add at this point, Kelsey, that your teen-age brains, literally, are not at their "prime" but are still in a developmental stage and are extremely vulnerable to injury by concussion and, most especially, by repeat occurrences of concussion.

First of all you need to differentiate between love and lust. Love is when you truly are committed to the well being of another.

If she had an affair with you when she was still married twice, and who knows how many others she had an affair with, then when she gets bored with you in a committed relationship you know in your heart she will find someone else to fulfill her fantasies.

This is a woman you want to RUN from Don't waste your time, you are 42yrs old. Find a woman with values and morals that will love and respect not only you, but her marriage vows. Quit fooling around with married women, it's dangerous in more ways than one and really indicates a character flaw that you need to address.

Always have a police report done. A pal of mine owned a pretty little 356 Porsche, back in the day, and a woman slammed her car into his in Pep Boys parking lot (remember Pep Boys? sigh . . .) My friend had a police report done. This bad driver had hit several other cars, on other occasions. This friend was the only one to collect damages, via insurance, because he had reported "accident' to the police. Good to document such events, officially.

Really like your photos. Beau looks to be the best of both breeds. He is blessed with "hybrid vigor," which is the new way of saying he's a "mutt."

Mark Twain wrote a great bit about mixed breeds:
"Oh, yes, Jasper----and a mighty good dog, too; he wa'n't no common dog, he wa'n't no mongrel; he was a composite. A composite dog is a dog that's made up of all the valuable qualities that's in the dog breed----kind of a syndicate; and a mongrel is made up of the riffraff that's left over." (From "His Grandfather's Old Ram" story.)

I think "Beau" is a handsome and wonderful "composite." I do so LOVE his paws!

Yes, it's definitely not the AMGEN Tour. The city of SB apparently thought that the tens of thousands of dollars in revenue the AMGEN Tour brings into town every year wasn't enough and in 2012 increased their "fee" for allowing SB to be a staging point. AMGEN didn't much care for this and simply re-routed the event AROUND Santa Barbara this year which cost local business owners a ton of $$$. Maybe next year the city will handle things differently.

Goleta Beach Parking

There is so much parking at Goleta Beach, have a little sympathy on those who park there. They probably have a reason they dont have a parking pass or the like, maybe they can't afford it.
I'm a student up at UCSC and the nearest in town public parking area was about 2 miles from campus. I was willing to do it because I did not want to pay an additional nearly $400 permit to park in a crappy lot. Needless to say, someone in the neighborhood I was parking in had no sympathy as some of the people on here, and I got a big Orange sticker in my window telling me to not park here. A PUBLIC street... Had to fork over the cash for the permit. Have some sympathy people! It's not as if the trek from Goleta Beach to UCSB is some casual walk, they most likely have a reason to do so.

Teen Challenge is a good organization. If you don't support teens trying to deal with drug problems that's okay but don't opine about teen drug problems then. If you're not assisting in the solution it's best not to add to the problem.

These kids are trying to raise funds to pay for their treatment program. No tax breaks, no Medi-Cal or insurance is available to them... these kids are probably getting food stamps. Santa Barbarans are developing a reputation for disdain for poor people, for the have-nots while we gloat in all the we have. Hmmm, ... I guess a church on every block doesn't say anything about the character of a community after all.

Teen Challenge is no more cult than AA, NA or the Salvation Army with it's fake Santa Clauses ding ding dinging for donations outside Albertons, Vons or RiteAid. At least they have measurable success at weening kids off drugs.... and that's a good thing no matter how you parse it.

It all sounds good until your kid gets labeled as a trouble maker at a young age by the system. Starting kids young in courts and incarceration has little advantage for self-esteem. Clearly the reasons for skipping school listed in the article indicated trouble already in these children's lives. Let's just pile some more on. The schools should be able to identify missed classes and communicate with parents. Since when has the DA's office and the jails had the best plan of rehabilitation? When someone gets into trouble the common practice is to throw them together with all the other trouble makers and let the melting pot boil.

Since they don't collect parking fees they don't have the extra staff resources to monitor such activities regularly. Smaller government, remember? Can't have it both ways.

As a UCSB student in the 80's I frequently parked there.... it wasn't even paved then but the signs were posted against students parking there even then .... and sympathize with those who park there today. There is tons of room for everyone else so this kind of gesticulating is rather petty.

403: You better believe I know it is my job, but the kid made it through high school never getting a detention, yet cutting all the time. I kept track of my kids attendance record everyday. I begged them to give him a detention because that is what the school policy handbook states will happen (something we parents and my son had to sign and return). If you have a policy at the school, it should be properly enforced. He was grounded and reprimended at home on a regular basis, however he knew the school did not care. Besides the parents, the schools should be showing our kids how they face consequences for their actions or don't write handbooks full of policies that you don't back. If it was his job, they would fire him (hopefully).

Please don't confuse bobcats' prey for that of coyotes.

Bobcats will go after your rabbits but not your cats or dogs. Also coyotes hunt in packs so they can take down a prey that is close to their size. Not so with bobcats who hunt alone and may be injured when trying to take down a prey that is close to their size, an injury that could make it more difficult to get their next meal.

Please.... it's this kind of misinformation that creates misplaced fear.

Parking Cone-undrum

Thank you TRUTHTELLER for saying that... my thoughts exaclty.

D8.... wouldn't it be more pro-active to remove the cones and make that parking spot available to any and all? By your own admission you don't know who placed them there or why and yet you report on your conjecture and assumptions (what you think happened: thoughts are not facts).

And if you place security cameras to guard the front of your property why use ones that have no night time resolution? Isn't that when most security breaches can be expected?

This reminds me of a fairly recent accusatory post of someone driving drunk because they had a tire blow out less than a mile from home and chose to drive on the flat/rim instead of repairing it on the spot. Lots of conjecture and photos of marks in the asphalt but no facts to support the assumptions/accusations made.

Knowing how to read at 4 is wonderful. But folks, kindergarten and first grade are A LOT more than just learning how to read. There are all of the components of socialization to consider as well. Then there is the issue of maturity. The idea of the Transitional Kindergarten was originally designed to have a place for children whose birthdays were in Sept., Oct., Nov., and Dec. and were not fully 5 years old by the start of school. It was not intended to be a "I get to skip Kindergarten because I can already read" program.

Flicka -

Teen Challange is an organization that runs a number of drug and alcohol rehab programs across the country, and not just for teenagers these days. The board (not a single reverend) who runs it are unpaid volunteers who invest a lot of time (and money if they have it) into the women's facility in Ventura and a men's facility near Bakersfield. The success rate with these programs is remarkably high and normally much higher than for-profit programs where someone is possibly getting rich.

Faith-based programs may not be your cup of tea, but do try to find the facts and stick to them or you may appear to be making up facts to support your own preexisting biases.

It was an article on Santa Barbara in the Chicago Tribune sometime in the early 1960's that mentioned the soothing fragrance of pittosporum and also Ruth and Rogers Restaurant, among other attributes of Santa Barbara. A few years later when moving here,
our family enjoyed the unpretentious good food which was simply a preparation for enjoying the home made pies. Thank you 279 for sharing a little about your family's history and about the good pies - 18 different varieties a day - Wow. Wish there were more good, comforting, unfancy restaurants these days.

Samarkand or San Roque?

2012-09-15 09:39 AM

My daughter has been at Peabody for 6 years. Their lottery has been around for just 2 years and is only because there are now too many students in the district to fit in the school, which has a maximum occupancy set by law. Most of the people who live here get in. The lottery will go away if the number of resident students drops. And the adjacent schools, Adams, Roosevelt, and OAS, are good schools, too.

Samarkand is beautiful, with gorgeous views. But it is hemmed in by busy streets, Las Positas, the freeway, and State/De La Vina. Something to think about if you want to walk places or if you want your kids to be able to ride their bikes anywhere. Living in San Roque on the Alamar side, we walk/ride all the time to the Natural History Museum, the Mission, Rocky Nook and Stevens parks. Also the nearby busy streets and helipad make traffic noise more constant in many parts of Samarkand. However both are beautiful neighborhoods. Your're lucky to have such good choices.

I don't know 303, wining is okay by me, it's the whining that gets me down.

Thanks to the OP, thanks to Dan and Yin Yang so much for the links, what great shots! So much green in those photos of downtown. Remember that radio tower right there in Radio Square? I'd forgotten all about that. Recognized a lot of old buildings that are gone now--like the old Y at Carrillo and Chapala. Big Norfolk Island Pine still at that corner, though.

Took me right back. Yes, it was a sleepy little town in the 50s and 60s. 101 was mostly two lanes, and north of the stoplights there were just stop signs at the places where there are freeway exits now. But change is inevitable. Just try to manage it. Our town has done better than most in that regard.

Bogarting is a word used that means , you are taking something excessivily.. like "hogging" something means you are taking more than you should. So, using the word "bogart" in the parking situation, means someone is taking up / reserving excessive parking area, that they probably shouldn't take.... I believe the original use was in reference to smoking a joint (marijuana cigarrett), and not passing it to the next person in a timely manner.

Never a waste of time paying attention to how are children are growing up. Ditching school and getting away with it leads to slacking in life. Teaching kids to be responsible in life is one of the best things you can do for their futures. A "I don't feel like it" attitude is a huge handicap in life. I think the DA's office is perfect for the roll of enforcement. If they do a good job it should lesson the number of criminal cases in the future. The better quality of people we can produce the lesser the bourdon on society. In the future.

Serving the community is no longer SBCC's concern. The illegals and senior citizens are not the problem. The school should just change there name to Santa Barbara International College as the international students are the population that is best served at this campus. The school only uses ESL and basic skills students to apply and receive grants that are ultimately use on how to better any population but those two. It does not matter how many new board members are voted in, if the same people keep running the school.

337, report the incident to the police and give them the license plate number. They can absolutely do an investigation and find the person and look at the car to see if there were inconsistencies, IF this is a major damage situation. If not, just go through your insurance company and you should be covered without your rates increasing.

Even if the damage is minor enough to not warrant a criminal investigation, I'd still file a police report for two reasons. 1) You never know if this person is driving around impaired and doing this a lot and this could be a good lead for the cops - unlikely, but it can't hurt and 2) this will be a good record for you in case your insurance company gives you any trouble now, or down the road. You can give them a copy. It takes about 15 minutes at your local station to fill out a report. Good luck, this kind of thing sucks, sorry this happened to you guys!

San Roque for both the neighborhood feel and Peabody. We are veterans of the educational refugee situation in SB. If you can afford to get into the Hope School District, do it. If I were the age of the students parking their vehicles, I too, would be looking at ways to cut down on the high cost of tuition, the high cost of books, the high cost of parking at UCSB. The costs for a university education have only risen in the last 40 years, my friends, they haven't gone down.

Have a little compassion, won't you?

Sounds like a kid we knew 5 or 6 years ago. He got in all kinds of trouble: teachers and others stuck out their necks for him; counselors tried to help but he just shined them on; grandparents did their bit; he still wound up on probation for all the usual stupid stuff. He was abusive with a "gimme" attitude; also very manipulative, which meant people ended up being wary of helping. It didn't help that he had a learning disability and had struggled with that since grade school, also a chaotic home life (with no Dad). Now he's in junior college and has straightened out a lot, but still struggles a bit with impulse control and the residue of all his early screw ups, but time should help with the latter. It's a fact that the impulse control parts of the brain don't kick in until the early 20s. A good (male?) therapist could help, if you can get him to go. Don't despair. It can look really bad at times, but that doesn't mean it will end badly.

I have noticed the change in Edhat commenters. It's less attractive for me to read the comments anymore because of the mean spiritedness shown. Much of the anger is based on untruths.
The state of Calif. is still paying for all 10 categories of adult ed (parenting, older adult, health and safety and others). The state and community colleges realize the benefit to educating all segments of the population. All colleges, including SBCC, have priorities and they are honoring those priorities. Going to the extreme end and cutting all the state-funded adult ed classes except basic skills and work training is not necessary. Trim back the offerings, slim down the heavy admin structure, and continue to serve the community you are supposed to serve as it says in your mission statement.

Seems odd that the District Attorney's Office has the desire and the resources to track and make phone calls to the thousands of students each year who skip class three times or more.

Which of the DA's cases are getting dealt down or complaints not filed to pursue this truancy stuff?

If some parents and some schools need an outside party to help them get kids to school, something is wrong with both.

Is our local education system, with its "all must go to college" mantra, causing its on truancy problem by not offering more career technical courses? Such courses (construction, auto, culinary, horticulture, hotel mgmt) might actually attract students to schools each day...

And when was the last time parents of truants had to take a parenting class with a "Nanny 911" facilitator?

First of all, you might want to determine if he is using drugs and if he is, this will help to shape whatever course you take from there. Drug and alcohol use for a teen can mean big trouble is coming soon. If he's driving under the influence then the concern is not just for his safety but also for the safety of others. Run, don't walk, to the Family Service Agency of Santa Barbara and get yourselves and your son into therapy immediately—the whole family needs to be involved. This is not just about your "troubled" son. It's about you and your parenting and your entire family dynamic, family history, alcohol use, genetics, boundaries, etc. It's time to quit thinking of your son as "troubled" and start accepting responsibility for being part of a "troubled" family in crisis.

A supportive family context that knows how to respond makes a world of difference. However, the responses that come intuitively to parents aren't all that effective. We need re-training, and we also need to hang in there. So get informed.

First, read up on 'oppositional defiant disorder'. Teens have to re-learn behaviors. Parents help when we re-learn some of our own.

Then, for general teen issues, two teen parenting books I HIGHLY recommend:

Michael Bradley, _Yes, Your Teen Is Crazy: Loving Your Kid without Losing Your Mind_.
Chap Clark and Steve Rabey, _When Kids Hurt_: Help for Navigating the Adolescent Maze_.

Our church was a rock of support, with lots of people who had been through it themselves.

There is additionally a great community need to expand these course offerings even further. These include the non-credit classes for workforce preparation and remedial college preparation.

These non-credit courses receive enhanced funding from the state to order to incentivize their further development in response to local community needs.

Teen Advice

2012-09-15 07:46 AM

Unconditional love works, but it often involves a stint in jail/camp imposed by the tough love folks. My son was a hellion (and this kid sounds like a cc of him) and ended up spending - in several doses - about 1 1/2 yrs in juvie/county jail. He is now a loving, happy, educated, productive 23-yr-old. What happened? Well, since his high crimes & misdemeanors were not violent, he was institutionalized with ordinary criminal guys...who actually straightened him out by delivering the message that he did not have to end up like them. In the end, my son realized that they were right, that he indeed did NOT want to keep playing this stupid game. How long? Trouble started big in 10th grade (age 15) and lasted until he was 20. That's a long time. Lots of pain. But, for me, the pain was worth it. I did not become his executioner... I am still his dear dad.

No easy solution. Hang in there. Peace.

Cottage may not exactly be turning those without insurance away. But they sure are quick about getting them out of the hospital. There are some real horror stories out there.

The St. Francis buyout was a real scam to create a monoply. Plus now, in case of a diaster, we have all of out eggs in one basket. If Cottage goes down for whatever reason, we have lost most of our hospital capacity.

Dinner and Dents

@OP. If the kind person that wittnessed the event actually did see it happening, woudn't that person know the make and model of the car they were in? I work closely with all the bodyshops in the area and could keep an extra eye out if I had the model/make and color of the car. From your description it sounds like it was street parking and he was in between your car and the truck behind him, therefore the perp would have front bumper and rear bumper damage with possible paint transfer on both bumpers.

I agree, this program makes the parents stand up and pay attention. Plus the school calls home that day of the abscence, so mom and dad are being lazy and not dealing with their kids actions. It is important to have an education, dumbing down are kids is not an option.

Cottage does not employee practicing doctors, with the exception of two Chief's of Staff. All other doctors are independant and bill seperately - ever receved an ER bill and a dr bill? In CA, drs aren't allowed to be employed by hospitals. All employees and drs are required to abide by a Code of Conduct that puts their patient's health care first - if Cottage really was "Big Bad Cottage", they would turn away all of the people who don't have insurance instead of treating them and absorbing the cost of their care... homeless, elderly and pediatric care, etc.

The sense of entitlement to subject others to loud music is both amazing and sad. We have a neighbor in Fellowship Canyon who plays his radio loudly all day as well as being noisy at all hours. They are mean, nasty and all you can do is sell and move...(no you can't talk to them, other neighbors have been abused trying)

Yeah I am for a 'tax on transient homeless tourists' too! Why can they set up 'business' on state street for free while my mom and pop business is not only charged for a business license, but also taxed on a percentage of every dollar I try to earn? Tax 'em, if they can't pay, fine 'em, if they can't pay that, ship 'em back where they came from.

Apple Pie

2012-09-15 07:03 AM

Thanks for remembering so fondly my mom and dad's restaurant, Ruth and Roger's, and how good our apple pie was. We made 18 different kinds a pie a day and our customers would call ahead of time to save their favorites. We came to SB from Ohio in 1953 and purchased our corner at Bath and Montecito Streets. We lived upstairs and my parents for years worked 18 hours a day, 7 days a week, until I got married in 1957, when they took their 1st vacation and closed for the weekend. They sold and retired around 1975 to their lovely home in San Roque and enjoyed their retirement. We always said that we had the "cream of the crop" customers. Thank you again for remembering, Ruth and Roger's.

272, your tone was way more negative than the first poster and not even helpful. So you typed almost 3 times as much as they did just to snark, lol, that's funny!

This is a good place to post a request for witnesses & so is craigslist. Unless they got the license plate it would be hard to find the guilty party. Hopefully have you uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage if the damage to your vehicle is extensive and they cannot be located.

Ah yes, and if this surveilance tape is obtained...and hundreds of cars are seen in the area at the time the Passat may have been hit...how does that help prove who hit THIS car?

Do you think the post office has a camera aimed at the cars parked in front of Julienne and Sojourner? Why would they?

Really, the advice that gets dished around on this site is more harmful and snarky than helpful or useful.

Outward Bound, taught by British SAS, taught me there were bigger forces to overcome than rebelling against my parents, friends, or authority figures. Do they still have that program?

I know it's probably out of place nowadays wher everything is psychoanalyzed to death, but it really worked for me and thousands of others. Made us deal with our problems and learn what we are really capable of, really, not just told a bunch of words.
