Let's worry about protecting the buttts of SBPD officers who refuse to report criminal neglect of minors disabled by broken backs due to accidents while riding unregistered, uninsured motorcycles with no brake lights or turn signals at night...as long as the minor's custodial parent is a former Mothers Against Drunk Driving president, not a medical marijuana dispensary owner.

310850 I call BS, in a chaotic situation no idea if a skilled and licensed shooter would have even been able to get a shot. The shooting of Congresswoman Giffords in Arizona showed that someone who was there with a weapon was unable to get a clear shot, and by the time he did subject was already being taken into custody by bystanders. That was a responsible gun owner who realized the limitation of the situation he was in, so tired of armchair qb's saying a licensed carry would have prevented a situation. You just don't know whether it would have or not might have possibly led to more casualties also but you don't want to use that possibility in your argument.

http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/investigate/civilrights/color_of_law/ Color of Law Abuses U.S. law enforcement officers and other officials like judges, prosecutors, and security guards have been given tremendous power by local, state, and federal government agencies—authority they must have to enforce the law and ensure justice in our country. These powers include the authority to detain and arrest suspects, to search and seize property, to bring criminal charges, to make rulings in court, and to use deadly force in certain situations. Preventing abuse of this authority, however, is equally necessary to the health of our nation’s democracy. That’s why it’s a federal crime for anyone acting under “color of law” willfully to deprive or conspire to deprive a person of a right protected by the Constitution or U.S. law. “Color of law” simply means that the person is using authority given to him or her by a local, state, or federal government agency. The types of issues which may initiate a pattern and practice investigation include: Lack of supervision/monitoring of officers' actions; Lack of justification or reporting by officers on incidents involving the use of force; Lack of, or improper training of, officers; and Citizen complaint processes that treat complainants as adversaries. Excessive force: In making arrests, maintaining order, and defending life, law enforcement officers are allowed to use whatever force is "reasonably" necessary. The breadth and scope of the use of force is vast—from just the physical presence of the officer…to the use of deadly force. Violations of federal law occur when it can be shown that the force used was willfully "unreasonable" or "excessive." City hall has increased police corruption by pretending to investigate it, while removing the SB City Records Retention Manual section pertaining to police records from the city website to conceal the fact that SBPD was in violation of city law by destroying records in Kasi Beutel's DUI arrests. City hall has also approved destruction of records (July 3, 2012) after 2 years, 5 years is standard police practice and SB records retention policy, at Sanchez's request. (end of quote from FBI site) This site has reporting info... [ more ]

A medical marijuana dispensary with edibles. We could have avoided the entire debate re Chick-a-Fil-A, since medical marijuana patients as a group (at least 10X the number of people supporting gay marriage) can be subjected to any hate crime - daily multiple instances of defamation at cc meetings, geographic and economic discrimination, lies about current law, corruption of a grand jury investigation by collaboration between council members and city staff to bias voting in a general election, arrests for substances declared legal by AG opinions, discriminatory bail, etc.An ABR member could probably abstain from a vote approving a store-front collective on the basis that amotivational pothead clients constitute a visible blight on a neigborhood with no objection from city hall. A couple of years of illegal lobbying violating federal law and CA FPA? - no problemo! REXOFSB: Omelettes Etc.

A mayor a city council and police chief that actually care about the safety and well being of the tax paying residents and get tough on vagrancy and public drunkenness and pass and enforce a gang injunction. A chamber of commerce that encourages every downtown business to hose and wash the stinky dirty sidewalks in front of their stores and present a good image. Clean and beautiful streets like Palm Springs and Victoria BC would be nice. Where are all those tourist dollars going if not to beautify and attract more tourists. All the above would be a good start to a more pleasant and beautiful SB.

I was not saying you were wrong about the speed - of course, not, you have both cameras! - I was just wondering about the reason and finding it strange that number of MPs would be the reason and hoped a pro who knows the physics of such things would explain! Some cameras with high MPs, the Nokai 818, can adjust the number of MPs; I wonder if the D800 can shoot at a lower number of MPs and, if so, if it is faster?

When I see workers on a job site, I want their shirts on and their tats covered. It makes the site appear more professional. I tell my friends that tattoos are for people who can't handle scars. I once dated a girl with tattoos and she regularly complained that some customers wouldn't work with her because of them.

In the 50's I had a little pontoon kayak boat that my cousin and I bought for $5 at a garage sale. One of our parents would drop us off at the harbor on summer days and we would paddle all over the harbor, through the pier and ALWAYS stop for the ten cent popcorn at the foot of the pier. Later, we'd get picked up. We were about ten years old. How many parents would dare leave their child to have this much fun totally on their own these days! Great memories.

What is irresponsible are the posts here that making the FALSE statement that Kurt Brimberry has been located, and is safe at his multi-million dollar estate in San Marino. There is absolutely NOTHING on Google or elsewhere on-line that supports this ludicrous statement. As a matter of fact, this man is a well-to-do, high-level executive in the Investment Banking industry, (Senior Vice President of Fiduciary Trust International), in Los Angeles. This combination of affluence, and ostensible value to his employer, make Brimberry a prime target for either politically or criminally-motivated attack, kidnap, and ransom demands. I, for one, hope the local authorities are pursuing an intensive manhunt for this man, who may have been the victim of something more sinister than what it appears from the scanty details we've already heard. My prayers go out to the Brimberry family.

The D800 is not recommended for serious sports photographers, and the D7000 is certainly not the fastest Nikon, but I have taken some very good images of sporting events with it.

929 is one of the reasons health care is so expensive. Accidents do not exist; everything is always due to negligence and therefore everyone must be held accountable, punished and sued! Result: Sky-high malpractice insurance premiums passed on to the consumer in the form of higher prices. I'm sure this giraffe's family has already contacted a lawyer. And regarding the "proof" that the vet was clearly in over his head because the death occurred...... I guess Tom Brady was in over his head at QB when he made a mistake and threw an interception. He should clearly not be allowed around footballs ever again.....

I know that stink well. In the Navy we used to save up all the leftover food on the aircraft carrier for a week prior to crossing the equator. 6000 men x seven days x 3 meals a day yields a LOT of leftover food. This food would fester in the heat and the stench was eye-watering. Then, on the day we crossed the equator (Wog Day), the poor polliwogs (those who had never crossed the equator) would have to wallow in the scraps (one of many nasty things they endured that day). No matter how much you cleaned, that ship would smell like that for weeks afterwards. Good times.

Thousands of nosy neighbors who care about where they live? What's wrong with that? When my husband and I drive on our street there is a place where we have to go out farther into the middle of the road because of the parked cars and the travel trailer. We have had close calls with cars coming in the opposit direction who are also having to swing out wide to go around parked cars. Head on crash - no big deal I guess. As long as people can store their vehicles/travel trailers on the neighborhood street instead of parking in their garage or on their driveway. PS – We both work.

sad, but a good warning to owners of little dogs, their obnoxious aggressive behavior puts them at risk of injury or death from a larger dog, EVEN IF that larger dog is on-leash. If my large dog is on a leash, and a loose dog attacks her, I believe she has every right to defend herself. Against a smaller dog, it's likely that the little dog will be hurt. And no, she's not a pitbull.

What looks better, and empty office building with a "For Lease" sign out front or a huge, fenced-up field of weeds with a "Coming soon...Cabrillo Business Park" sign? Not one of you people who wish Deckers had chosen an existing building have any idea what you are talking about. Companies like Deckers look at ALL their options first...including renting an existing local building, moving out of town, even moving out of state, before making their final decision. Clearly the list of available buildings in Goleta were either too expensive or not suitable for Deckers' needs.

310850 - Yes, the NRA wackos are foaming at the mouth publicizing this story as a reason we all should be able to have guns and carry them concealed. It's kind of like when a car goes off a bridge into a lake and the guy who was wearing his seatbelt drowns and the guy who wasn't wearing his seatbelt was able to get out and live, and using that one example as a reason never to wear seatbelts. Pure balderdash.

If you can get away safely thats always better than shooting someone, shooting and possibly taking another's life should be the last resort. As for the shoot in the legs theory though most people even those with training can't place a shot like that in those situations. The reason police are trained to go for center mass its the biggest area you generally don't have the time or presence of mind to place your shot.

Some of those little dogs are very aggressive towards my shelter dog pit mixes when we walk through the neighborhood. Is it that the little dogs don't seem dangerous so owners let them off leash and don't stop them from barking or charging? If mine were similarly behaved then people would probably call the cops on me.

He would love to sit on my grandparents porch and talk to all of us. What a wonderful time that was!

I feel very sorry for this giraffe. I wonder how such a young giraffe suffers an abcess and infection- was it related to diet? If you google giraffe zoo deaths you get a lot of very sad stories. I understand the need for zoos to educate the public but personally I prefer facilities like the San Diego Wild Animal Park where the animals have larger areas so they can live more like they would in the wild.

Yes, law enforcement needs to talk with management but the management, within their rights, will simply deny responsibility for actions performed by individuals who patronise the premises. Hopefully they could try to beef up the security and modify the impaired vision.

It's called dead man's foot, I found this info on the Bay Area Mycological Society's webpage: Pisolithus arrhizus It is late summer, when crumbly dog turds appear along the sidewalk, and we know that autumn is coming. Dog turds as harbingers of our favourite season! In a time of year when there is not much moisture around, in the midst of our rainless California summer, these mushrooms are able to grow and form firm juicy fruitbodies. They are so firm, and have so much turgor that they can even push up the pavement and pop up in other unexpected places to shed their spores. Officially, the dog turd fungus is called Pisolithus arrhizus, one of many names for it. The name is derived from the Greek and means the ‘rootless pea-stone’. Dead man’s foot and Dye ball are two other common names for it.

Well, if you are driving in or riding in a vehicle to go on a 3-day camping trip, park YOUR car in the space the other vehicle was parked in...unless you're saying you have two vehicles and no offstreet parking at your abode, in which case your neighbors must love you anyways. There's always airport parking, park 'n ride parking, etc.

I don't know. Every time I go camping for a 3-day weekend, my car might be left of the street & subject to towing? Kinda sucks. A friend's car was towed when they went on vacation once, and it was a huge pain. I live in an area where people in RVs tend to park & stay, but they move every day/night. So this wouldn't even help with that. But it would affect anyone who goes away for a long weekend.

Fine... The link was vague, mentioned intruder but also trespassing. But if the door is unlocked its still forced entry, a drunk neighbor entering your home is entering unlawfully and by force if they do not have your permission. http://www.ksby.com/news/california-law-says-it-s-legal-to-shoot-an-intruder-in-your-home/ http://www.gunlaw.com/index.php? option=com_content&task=view&id=81&Itemid=100 http://www.danapointtimes.com/view/full_story/17315810/ar ticle-Dana-Point-Man-Shoots--Kills-Intruder-? instance=home_special Read these through, the law presumes an intruder is causing physical danger. The DA, based on the specific incident, can suggest a jury disregard the presumption.

I don't think that having more MP creates a slower camera and I am surprised to read that the $3K NIkon D800 is slower than the 16.2 MP $1K D7000. The new Nokia cell has 41 MP; the new Sony point and shoot that I long for has 20.2 MP and is not slower than others of 16 MP or 12 MP. Perhaps a pro will weigh in? But as for creativity, I agree, 'though I do not see it lacking in yours here! I've been taking pictures for as long as I can remember (and that's a long time!) with a variety of cameras, Rolleis, Leicas, NIkons, Canons and more, but now only digital. It seems to me that it's repetition, clicking, clicking, clicking and luck, too, in being there to see what the eye is trained to see. ...and editing, having the courage to trash. (310363P)

Yes, part of the fun of when you are single and in your 20s when you go to a club like this and flirt with guys is you physically flirt too, aka groping! I am a female and married with kids plus way too old to do that now but I went to this place a few times in my 20's with friends to dance with cute guys. What he did to her was close enough to "rape" in my book, and shocking. Yes, people get drunk at these clubs and touch each other but this was assault. The person who was offended at the post earlier misunderstood and was way too quick to rush to judgement. I don't condone what this guy did or think it's her fault in any way and am upset that her friends didn't see what was going on and help her out. There is a big difference between drunken groping/touching/flirting than what this creep did.

Lack of understanding of the technology certainly could be a basis for not being dazzled by it. Also, I did not assume anything about your IQ ... that's another of your fallacies; what I said was that, other than the numerous errors in logic you have demonstrated here, you are "unknown". They had NOT unlawfully and forcibly intruded into his HOUSE. Thus CA Penal Code § 198.5 does not apply here. 2. A drunk neighbor who enters your home by mistake has neither entered your home unlawfully nor by force. Thus CA Penal Code § 198.5 does not apply here.

A girl encourages an alcohol fired man's attentions then when, in her personal estimation, he goes too far, she finds herself powerless to turn off the switch? Too creepy to think about. Anonymous 740, the Penal Code you quote is helpful reading for everyone. The law "presumes" innocence in that situation, as it should. If in danger, and armed, dont hesitate. You should protect your family and you will be protected by the law. However shooting a burglar carrying a huge TV walking towards the door could result in the DA pressing charges. The facts of the case are always considered and have resulted in arrests when forensics prove the intruder was attempting to exit or otherwise incapable of causing harm when shot. For example from a quick google search. http://www.vvdailypress.com/news/property-611-columbia-walker.html And I recall someone being arrested for shooting a drunk neighbor who entered their home by mistake. I could not find the details.

I'm with you, 434. I feel like this question was asked not too long ago on Edhat and the responses were the same. Edhat is the wrong place to get an accurate sense of how society as a whole views tattoos (or anything for that matter), because the people who comment don't represent the general population. I don't know why I read all of the comments either as it just makes me realize how ignorant and insensitive people can be. If you don't like tattoos, don't get one. Otherwise worry about yourself and don't judge other people's choices. I am a working mom with 2 master's degrees and have several tattoos. I won't bother explaining why or what they mean to me because this isn't a community I want to share that with. Some of the commenters are not people that deserve to know something so personal to me.

Ditto Tracy & 755. Thank god for the busboy (DUDE! You are a hero!). And, hey 751? The girl wasn't raped on the floor, she was groped against her will. And BOTH of those things are morally reprehensible. Groping by stranger who don't listen when you tell them to stop isn't what I'd call "part of the fun". A guy put his hand on my shoulder at a bar once, and the look I gave him told him he'd be pulling back a stump if he didn't remove said hand rather quickly. Had he touched me anywhere else, I would have punched him. I don't tolerate sexual harrassment - women like you aren't helping when you expect to be groped at bars. You want to get crazy & have fun, good for you - but your attitude is messed up. And if you're a guy, you should know that you're going to get a sexual harassment charge someday, and I hope the judge throws the book at you.

Size alone limits it to a shinx moth or the silk moth family. Looks more like a Polyphemus silk moth. Note the small tubercules along and around the body. The photo does not show the head well, but if it is brownish tan that is also diagnostic for Polyphemus. Any Sphinx moth it could be has a pointed appendage above the tail end. Polyphemus caterpillars eat oak. They are found in SB, but are not nearly as common as the Ceanothus silk moth. As large as it is and wandering around it was probably looking for a place to spin its cocoon and pupate.

I have lived in Montecito through two serious fires. State fire aid was paramount to fighting these events. Montecito benefits immensely from having state open lands abutting it. These lands are fire hazards and paying for their protection is fair.

My comment earlier was that indeed this could have been an accident and presented the scenario for mishandling a fire arm. The guy could have had the clip out, assumed that it was empty but one round was in the chamber. he hits a bump and pow! now the gun is empty!! It is so hard to believe that someone would Shoot themselves while at freeway speed. What if the vehicle crossed over into an oncoming School Bus? I guess we will have to wait for the accident reconstruction team from the CHP to find out the real answers

Looks like it's probably a tomato hornworm (or sphinx/hawk moth caterpillar - same thing), but agree that a side shot would be nice. If it has a horn on it, that's probably what it is. And yes, tomato hornworms are harmful to your tomatoes. But they grow up into hawk/sphinx moths - these are moths that are commonly mistaken for hummingbirds - super beautiful moths. I sacrificed some tomatoes one year for these guys. If you want to get rid of them, you can buy parasites that lay eggs on them. But I'd suggest sacrificing a plant or two for these guys & just picking them off the good plants & transferring them to the sacrificial plant (that is not right next to the good plant!). They are seriously that cool. Google image search them. To me, at least, they make monarchs look homely.

and then guys wonder why they always get blown off when they ask girls to dance. YES, we do think all guys are potentially creepy jerks when they are intoxicated. we don't trust you. I have had plenty of incidents when a disgusting creep (ESPECIALLY at Tonic! Creeper Central) will walk by and smack my behind or another unsuspecting female. the club is so crowded and loud that you don't even get a chance to yell at the creep, much less run after him or sic a bouncer on him. Tonic bouncers are creeps themselves so they're no help. I have seen a bouncer punch a patron for being told that "tonic is lame". I don't think either candidate should receive money from corporations, unions, or individuals. There should be a set amount each has to use and that is it. You don't enter politics to get rich (well you aren't supposed to anyway) and they shouldn't have to spend millions of dollars to get elected. It would also free up these elected officials to actually do their jobs instead of running around fundraising and campaigning for over a year before the election. Have a few speaches and get them to square off a few times on the issues that actually matter. We don't need to see a million commercials that spout half truths at best. Limiting their spending would actually force them to stick to the real issues. Debates would have to steer clear of filler questions that don't really matter. Then we might have some candidates run because they actually care about fixing our nation. Who knows they might even be qualified to do so. Oh and get rid of the political parties. There is no point to it. I refuse to be limited to a certain political party when another party's candidate may be more qualified.

DILLYDALLY - Absolutely WRONG!! You can legally kill ANYONE (who is not a family/household member) that has unlawfully and forcibly intruded into your house, and the ONLY thing you have to prove is that you knew or had reason to believe that an unlawful and forcible entry occurred. The act of using lethal force in this situation shall AUTOMATICALLY deem you to have held a reasonable fear of imminent peril of death or great bodily injury to self, family, or a member of the household. You do NOT have to prove that you feared for your life. Read CA Penal Code § 198.5.

@700: It's a huge assumption to think that the neighbors would have seen or noticed the prowler. How many people sit outside all morning watching who's coming and going? I'm friends with most of my neighbors, and yet we often go for a week or two at a time without even seeing each other. Someone prowling around a house may only be visible for a small portion of a minute. Do you really think you or anyone else watches their neighbors' houses continuously enough to spot every possible suspicious thing that happens? Also, any neighborhood has various non-residents around throughout the day: gardeners, painters, contractors, utility workers, friends, visitors. If you called whenever you saw someone you didn't recognize, you'd become The Boy Who Cried "Wolf." What I'm saying is that even when people care and try to watch out for each other, it's just not possible to see everything all of the time.

310708P - Comparing George Zimmerman to someone shooting an intruder who is in their house is like comparing apples and Buicks. Not even in the same country. If an intruder is in your house, and you are silly enough to have a hand gun available, then shoot the bastard, and shoot to kill. Make SURE he is dead. That is VERY important. Otherwise there will be two sides to the story. Believe me, you have already endured the hassle of having a stranger intrude into your house, and you will endure the after effects of that for many years. Adding on your ability to defend your house, becoming a local hero, dealing with police questions and handling possible backlash from whichever ethnic group the intruder came from is minor compared to that. Shoot him. You will NEVER get prosecuted.

@711 nailed it. Shooting someone in your house could easily get you jail time. If you point a gun at an intruder and they want to bolt, you can not detain them and shoot them. You will also need to prove you were in actual danger and the intruder ment to do you physical harm. The Zimmerman ordeal is an entirely different situation.

Considering the crazy drivers on East Los Olivos who either speed or don't know what they are doing, this prayer is appropriate. Tourists to the Mission are easily befuddled by this inconsistent collection of one-way streets, two-way streets, two-way stops and four-way stops as they work their way back out to State Street.

Some of these musicians have played on, and written, some of the most recognizable music ever. Michael Jackson, Rufus & Chaka Khan, Mandrill, Parliment Funkadelic, Denise Williams, Teena Marie, and Rick James are just a few of the artists these musicians have worked with. Bravo to the entire show!! And, yes, the Granada did a very poor job of advertising this show.

Goleta Office Buildings |
2012-08-21 09:11 AM |

The Deckers development is a large part of an even larger development encompassing the entire property from Hollister to the Mammoth Movers operation on the southern edge, and all the way west to the eastern edge of the properties fronting Storke. The former Delco HQ is being remodeled, added to and converted to use as corporate HQ for another Goleta-based high tech company that has outgrown its current space. The remaining parcels on the site will be occupied by the City of Goleta as a facilities yard, UCSB Facilities Management, and other lessees. The developer is NOT going to build on spec; all buildings will be constructed only when contracts have been signed for long-term occupancy. And yes, the existing wetland, which occupies approximately 20% of the entire site, will be preserved and protected. This is a GOOD project for Goleta and SB.

Kudos on the medal but I'm sorry, the olympics are pure hype and celebrate dirty sports like water polo, where the object is to get away with as many cheap shots as possible to win? Or turn a guy who runs the fastest 100 yards into a multimillionaire? I'd love to see us celebrate some of the local kids who are brilliant, working hard in math and science and getting academic scholarships to universities. There's more to them than SAT scores- they have passions, dreams and real achievements. Going nuts over sports sends the wrong message to the rest of the kids in school. A gold Medal is nothing compared with a regents scholarship for a math major. Let's get our priorities straight.

RDH is right, you can own the best camera in the world and take lousy photos. It's a process, and I'm learning more about it every day. I started 'collecting' FX lenses right away with the thought of one day getting a full frame camera, so whew, that was a good idea, as lenses are really pricey. As to the D7000, it's great for bird photography and is faster, 6fps, vs only 4fps for the more expensive D800. D800 is a much slower camera all around because of the massive amount of mp, 36!

@288: I saw it on the KEYT news the night of the show at the top of the 11 o'clock broadcast. Funny, I did not send this to EdHat, but posted this EXACT report/notice on my Facebook page the night it happened, right down to the last letter, comma and ellipsis... Coincidence? Hmm...

The camera, 363P, is, again, a now rather hum-drum Nikon D300S. My son has the D7000 and that lens, they make a fine combination, in my opinion. I too dream of the D800 some day but then one needs high quality FX lenses, etc., etc. For now I find by far the biggest limitation is my eye and creativity--a better camera won't fix that.

RDH: interesting. It's my understanding also that anything that is posted on edhat is available to others but that credit should be given to edhat. (And, to be nice, to the photographer.) I have not seen (but haven't dug around) any copyright notice here. I also assumed when I sent in pictures, something I rarely do now, that anyone can and would use them. I once used a photo from a newspaper on my website, thinking it was public domain, and did hear from the photographer. I willingly gave credit and would have done so initially if I had thought more about it.

664, you can only shoot someone if you believe your life is in danger. Shooting a guy twice in the knees would look like punishment or torture rather than self-defense, and you'd be in a world of trouble. There's also the chance that the guy might recover and want revenge. Always shoot to kill.

I waited until I was 60 to get my tat. It was a copy of one that an old friend had, who died of cancer. The tatoo artist checked my i.d. to make sure I was over 18. and made sure I hadn't been drinking. It was clean and sanitary, ,and very expensive ! It's a small one so I can't imagine what the full sleeves cost !

310536 - Actually, yes. Cold fusion (in a way) IS right around the corner. The E-Cat, a low-energy nuclear reactor, will probably be available for home use in a year or two. Andrea Rossi is still being (rightly) secretive about his product, but that's simply because it will change energy usage as we know it, and there are companies out there worth a combined multi-trillion dollars that would not want to see this product put on the market.

I passed this about 5 minutes after the incident. Selfishly, I first thought how glad I was to get there before traffic backed up. But then what struck me was all the kind people who had stopped to help with traffic, etc. before the CHP and fire truck arrived. There must have been 6 or 7 helpful citizens out there. Thanks to them and to the emergency responders.

574, my problem with quantum computing is not that it won't eventually work, it's that it is taking a ridiculous amount of money to fund something the human race just doesn't need. The researchers even stated they're getting the correct prime factors of 15 less than half the time, and we're supposed to be dazzled? Think of all the problems our society could solve with this cash and brainpower. On the other hand, nuclear fusion is truly a fantasy as it will always require more energy input than output. Oh, and how do you know my IQ ain't soaring? That was the only fallacious assumption in this thread! I just don't believe in the advancement of geek anymore. Computing speed is not what is holding our species back.

Are we really supposed to believe that a tattoo is a more obvious sign of a desire for attention than an expensive luxury car or designer label clothing? Or wearing makeup, or working out? Everyone has their "thing" that means a lot to them... just because your taste is your own does not mean it's good or something anyone else should care about. In this life, the only important thing is how you treat others... and by the looks of it, a lot of these anti-tattoo people are the sort I'd rather not spend my precious time with.
