I wish the would all have to get a business license and pay the occupancy tax. It takes away from residential neighborhoods and impacts the places that do pay taxes and employees and do it legally. There should also be a way for neighbors to complain if it overly impacts their neighborhood that will stop it.

Harbor Patrol officials confirm to ...

2012-08-17 08:58 PM

Why are people surprised that great whites are off our coast? They always have been. The ocean is the WILD people. We used to have bears (remember the ones that are on our flag) in these here wild mountains too but we killed them all. That's right, the CA bear is extinct.

Shall we do that to sharks, too, because some of us can't deal with the fear?

Every year, about 100 people die from shark attacks across the globe.

Every HOUR about 10,000 sharks are killed by people across the globe.

Conservation needs to happen now, before it's too late.

She got off easy. Happens when you're a celebrity, have money or are a high profile person.

It's sad that the only time people who are in these categories see jail time is when some judge is trying to make an example of them or prove they are hardline.

It would be nice to have a happy medium....call me crazy, but justice shouldn't care if you're on tv sometimes or not. She could have killed someone and should have been treated accordingly.

I feel like this is a kinda petty thing to post here. Why not go directly to the people causing the irritation to you and explain (calmly, respectfully and rationally) how you feel? If that doesn't work, voice your concern again to management or find out who is in charge of the regional offices for this store.

Whole Foods Employees Smoking On Hi...

How ironic ... a "healthy" place like Whole Foods?

All those cigarette butts get washed into the creeks & storm drains and end up on our beaches and in the ocean. According to Channel Keeper, cigarette butts are one of the most numerous items they pick up on their beach cleanup days.

I don't shop at Whole Foods anyways because their CEO (John Mackey) opposes health care reform.

Cigarette butts are noxious. Most are not biodegradable and, as such, equivalent to dropping a chunk of plastic on the ground. Many - not all - cigarette smokers are so oblivious they drop them without even thinking. Would the same person so easily toss a plastic bottle cap on the ground? Probably not. Filters also contain a minute dose of very nasty toxins which the creeks don't need. For Whole Foods Market to have a smoking problem is a cosmic joke.

Wouldn't bother me much, so long as they weren't obnoxious. When I go places on vacation, I prefer to go where the "locals" go rather than tourist spots, and the vacation rental sites can be quite good and often find places that are cheaper than hotels in the area and higher quality. Then again we don't have a ton of money and probably put up with more in terms of "neighborly noise" than the people who live near places others would want to rent out for a weekend...

In our neighborhood, we have a number of rentals and timeshares. The renters seem to be well-behaved for the most part.

On the down side, the majority of homes sold in the past few decades in our neighborhood have gone to out-of-towners who then turn them into rentals or timeshares. I think that lessens the sense of community.

To be harsh, we're getting a lot of rich folks from out of town buying up our homes (I was born here so it's probably a unique perspective).

I don't like it. Residential zoning is just that. We have plenty of commercial lodging that could use the business. Friends recently participated in a VRBO in Palm Springs. they had 27 guys there for a bachelor party. I can't imagine what it would be like to live next to a party palace like that. Even if TOT is being paid, and I doubt it is, party palaces and neighborhoods with families, etc. do not mix. Time to put this to an end and keep our neighborhoods just that. Neighborhoods. If I wanted to live next to a vacation rental, I would move next to the Biltmore. And hey, they have a great big expensive VRBO right there. It's too bad people buy properties that they can't afford. Then they turn on the 'entrepreneurial' spirit and we all suffer.

Depends entirely on the renters. I've done the condo/home rental and it beats the heck out of a hotel. If you're going to be there for a month, it's cheaper than a decent hotel and you can actually live comfortably. As long as the owners don't rent out their properties for parties, you'll probably never notice that the neighbors change weekly/monthly.

And please, east of Rocky Nook, are you sure it's not someone's veggie garden? I'm sure SBPD will be able to identify pot. A very public place to be growing that. I'll wait for the news report.

Lately, all networks treat Americans like idiots, talk down to us and generally keep us totally UN-informed. Cox is, however a great internet provider, so I'd hate for that to go away! ABC is a channel that we want to keep but the networks are a bunch of control freaks and are greedy. Wish we had more than Cox for a cable company. The homeless problem became an issue immediately after 45,000 people were released from their medical facilities and taken off of their medication. This was signed into order by Ronald Reagan in the 1970s. Add to this, a lot of men returning from war who can no longer function in society, as well as "disturbed" people without medical care-or families. This is what happens. We need to share the wealth and take care of the people...there's more than enough money, when you take it out of the hands of the greedy, under taxed population. OP here. Thanks for the comments.

The camera, since someone asked, is a 2004 (I think) Canon PoweShot Pro. Big heavy point and shoot. It has a feature they called SuperMacro which they don't seem to make as well anymore.

The gophers are kept out of the raised beds with multple layers of chicken wire underneath. Works well for several years before you have to re-dig and rebuild. Worth the trouble.

More pics coming. Bee hives and chickens and stuff.

The FCC requires Cox Cable to carry local government channels and local TV stations in their basic cable lineup as negotiated by local government:

transition fcc gov / cgb / consumerfacts / cablechannels.pdf

My guess is this means the City of SB specifies what local stations Cox must carry in order to maintain their monopoly.

The trick then is, how do KEYT and Cox negotiate licensing costs when they're both forced to play with each other? And, can Cox go back to the City of SB and ask to replace KEYT with a different local station (e.g. KSBY)? Would the City even allow that to happen considering KEYT is the only station in town?

Keeping pot illegal is what (1) the drug cartels and organized crime want, (2) big pharma wants, (3) the largely privatized prison industry wants, and (4) it what law enforcement agencies want...

Keeping pot illegal is how certain criminal, corporate and other corrupt elements of society get FAT AND WEALTHY... and they pay off our terminally corrupt politicians, via an army of terminally corrupt Washington DC lobbyists to keep the law the way it is.

Maintaining the law against pot is a national security risk, a national health nightmare, and a crime creator. Those who wish to maintain the status quo display an anti-American stance and are:

(1) either benefitting financially, or (2) are hidebound by tradition, or
(3) have been thoroughly brainwashed by decades of baseless, unscientific conspiracy theory and propaganda.

QED.

Do you have a written contract? If not, go to them and have them sign an IOU with a payment plan clearly specified in writing. If they do not pay, then you have a case for the courts!

I went through Small Claims Court and found it to be very easy. It's just a simple form and then the court will first try mediation, which worked for us. The cost is about $50 and you can sue up to $6,000 (I think).

If they lose the case, the court is allowed to garnish their wages to pay you and it will be on their public record.

When I lived in Ventura I never thought twice about having to pay for beach access parking. City lots, county lots, state beach lots -- all have meters, gates, booths, whatever. In L. A. county, there isn't a beach lot anywhere for free.

Back east, one drives toll roads to get to the beach, and then pays exorbitant entry fees, then fights with zillions of other drivers to find a parking space before hiking long distances while carrying all the beach gear to find a few inches of sand not covered by someone else's towel or stuff.

We have had it exceedingly good here, but life keeps getting tougher. Our buses, shuttles and other forms of alternative transportation make it possible to avoid paying for parking if we think it through and plan ahead, we just don't want to change our habits.

If you can afford a car, two children, sand toys, towels, clothes, snack, and an umbrella, you can afford to pay a few bucks for parking.

If you can afford a car and a dog, you can afford a couple of bucks for parking.

If you can afford a car, a surfboard, and to surf daily, you can afford to pay for parking.

Obviously, none of us want to pay for something that is currently free. But none of these are examples of people who "can't" afford a parking fee, they're examples of people who prefer to spend their money on other things AND want a free parking spot at the beach.

They fight over streets and neighborhoods for everything from drug sales, to simply making a name for thereselves before they inevitably hit prison. They all pay homage and a percentage of their profits from drug sales, larceny, racketeering to the Mexican Mafia or La Eme in order for protection when in prison. In Prison they come together as SouthSiders and forget WS/ES. How many killings, stabbings, robberies, does it take until we add the gang injuction enhancement? I get it we don't want to scare away tourist as they are the economy, but what about the folks that live here?I have seen the violence just increase, use to be fists and knives now these punks are using auto rifles. No wonder I carry a gun and refuse to be a victim.

I hope the bike riders look out for cars, share the road, and stop at stoplights and signs like they are supposed to. Kind of BS how the cops don't enforce these bikers racing through town breaking laws/infractions when they are in a pack, but jump on all drivers for the most minute thing. Should be equal and fair regardless of what vehicle you are cruising through town with.

@613: There's probably going to be a steady stream of us throughout the day (I'm on the ride, too). The FB page states 1500 expected, and it's not a mass-start event--people can set out any time between 6:30 and 9:30. My best guess is that the first riders will start reaching the 192 around 8:30 - 9:30. After that, it's going to be pretty busy in the area, especially between Manning Park and Goleta, until about 3. Cathedral Oaks in Goleta's going to start getting busy probably 10:30 - 11 ish.

I'll be doing my best to be a responsible road user. Hope the rest of us do the same. Oh, and to any other riders reading this, remember that sound carries very well through the Mountain Dr. area. Apparently, the residents learned quite a bit about us the last time 'round.

I wish this was happening during the winter swells so people would stay out of the water and I could get more waves. I have surfed shark infested waters like Durban, SA and Northern CA and this is nothing. Fishermen kill 500,000 White sharks a year just for their fins, it actually is good to see the population in our marine environment increasing in order to keep healthy. Really your chances are slim to none of encountering one, enjoy the warm water and the rest of summer without fear.

I was in Los Olivos one morning early when there was a runners race. The streets used were closed off to cars, and there were cops at places where cars were allowed to cross the road the runners were using during a break in the stream of runners. I thought it was well-organized and kept cars and runners from interacting.

Forewarning of the routes to be taken by the cyclists is an excellent idea. I will avoid those roads on Saturday.

1000 Steps Repair

2012-08-17 01:48 PM

The stairs are below groundwater hence always being wet/ slippery. I have seen a few people stack there over the years but usually because they weren't walking slowly. The city used to spray off the stairs and moss a few times a month. I hope they just leave it as is so it doesn't attract all this attention to the beach. It is a small space where locals can walk there dogs off leash and hang out without the crowds like Hendry's or Led's. Plus there is like five parking spots if you don't live within walking distance, I am sure the locals would love people parking in front of their houses all day and all these people crowding the peaceful setting. Thanks for putting 1000 Steps on the tourist map OP.

Cox Cable said nope; to pay KEYT that kind of money we will have to raise our rates on our customers and Cox Cable is not willing to raise rates on it's customers to compensate for KEYT's greedy pansy-ass behavior so... Thanks all for the positive comments!...to answer a few of the Q's....

Yes, I do own a new D800 and the main difference is in the amount of megapixels. The D800 has a whopping 36...the most of any camera...yet! You can crop down an image to an eyeball and it will still be sharp and not noisy at all. This Nikon is making some Canon shooters switch teams!! No auto settings, so I'm committed now to learning how to take good shots on manual setting! D800 is a lot more $$ of course, but the D7000 is a heck of camera and you can pick one up now at Costco for a good price.

Thank you to the agencies that did this clean-up. Trashing our national forest infuriates me. Illegal drug encampments endanger us all, and steal from us all. I worry far more about the 2 legged varmints in the forests nowadays, than I do about any other other creatures or dangers. I am fine with public resources being used to drive out this abuse of our public lands (though I'd like to send the bill to Mexico's drug cartels and US drug users).

If you smoke marijuana, please grow it yourself, on your own property, for your own use. Otherwise, you're probably indirectly supporting this kind of abuse of our natural resources.

It sounds like this is an organized ride so the organizers can be legally pursued if the riders cause accidents or injuries or any other trouble. This is a much different situation than the loosely organized ride the day after fiesta. The fact that the organizers are putting out advance notice that their riders aren't always good citizens makes them liable in the event of any trouble. Hope they have good insurance!

We have dealt with this situation several times in small claims court. Eventually you get a judgment which you can then take to the Sheriff. We have had the Sheriff walk into a business and take the cash out of their register, or into their bank and take cash out of their account if you know where they bank. They will also repossess assets, but this is complicated and expensive for you. Document everything, send certified letters with return receipts for proof in court. It's fairly easy, actually. We have had clients settle once a court date is set and they see we're serious about it.

Keep Our Beaches Free

2012-08-17 10:49 AM

People can use public transportation. And it is cheaper than revving up the auto. One save money learning how to get around on the bus, even to the beach with kids in tow.

Be an example to your children and get them to pitch in too to help. If they want it, they have to bring it in a back pack.

Yes, one can and needs to do this, if you don't want to pay to drive your gas-guzzler and demand other people pay you for your sense of privileged entitlement.

Over-stating the case to keep getting freebies at the expense of the rest of us is a failed argument. The proper argument is stepping up to pay and/or make it work for you to avoid this necessary user fee.

Voters created this structural deficit and voters have to solve it. More demands for free benefits while not paying for them doesn't work any longer. The new public ethic. No more public funded nanny state spending other people's money.

It's probably best to ask them about a payment plan. If you send them to collections you will get maybe .10 on the dollar of what you are owed and then the collections agency makes a ton and usually adds on extras. If they don't pay you might be more financially better off to write it off as a tax loss and then tell them you can no longer do business with them.

If the discussion does not satisfy you then let them know it is going to collections.

There is nothing positive about gang culture when it is defined as being nothing positive. But sociologically all groups band together to protect, advance and socialize with people they trust. Social clubs are an obvious proof of this. The more serious question is do all "gangs" and associations advocate criminal conduct? And why are gang injunctions directed universally at groups of non-whites? Maybe this is evidence that the prosecutors of such injunctions are protecting their turf from intrusion by outsiders just as the "gangs" would do?

@480, I like your post. Genuinely. I think you hit the nail on the head about the homeless people. You have thought through the problem and that is my favorite sort of post. Knee jerk reactions that are short sighted frustrate me and I comment on them. Apologies that I have come off as deriding, my intention is to expand the sometimes narrow point of views being echoed over and over. I will consider that when making my points in the future.

We absolutely need to do something about homeless people in Santa Barbara. Like you say what we are doing doesn't work, and neither did the "do nothing" plan that many advocate. Again we agree to focus money and effort on the programs that do work, try to find new solutions, and enforce the laws. I dont know if I agree about it being easy. The hard part seems to be evaluating what programs work (or how to reform them so they work better). A discussion of specific programs and what to cut and what to double down on would be great.

Isn't POT great...? It's soo natural. It's really good for your lungs as it has a special tar that coats your lung tissue.
The growers use special chemicals to make it grow in a natural way. The growers dispurse toxic chemicals that KILL any living creature that would try to eat any plants near the grow site (deer, raccoons, bear, coyote, rats, owls or any other inhabitants in the food chain in our forrests). Growers ROB the water from our natural creeks to feed their un-native plants, and chemical run off goes back to our watershed.
Yeah, POT is really good for us.

Near the end a woman reduced a lot of us to tears when she described how limited her options were as an apartment renter and how much she treasured her access to county beaches. Even one of the Supervisors was visibly teary. Underemployed, unemployed, fixed income, students.... every slice of life benefits free public access. Let's keep it that way.

Please take the time to contact your representative on the Board of Supervisors and voice your opposition. This was made clear at the end of the meeting. I just googled "board of supervisors" plus my zip code to turn up contact information.

There are people growing on the east side of Rocky Nook park--east of the stream--a block north of the playground. They work at night on Saturday around 11 pm. I've notified the park ranger.

Another grow is taking place above Stevens Park -- not sure how far. A jeep 4MMD855 parks near the entrance to the park--frequently late on Saturday or Sunday night-- and the driver walks up through the park.

I don't follow or confront these people, but I'm just saying that not all the activity is going on in the remote back country.

430, legalization may not end them, but it would eliminate 99% of them. The reason they go through such great lengths is not to get caught.

The part that pains me the most is the complete lack of regard for their destruction of the forest and the poaching. I have no patience for people who trash our only remaining natural areas.

I'm really curious to see how things go when the DEA funding finally dries up, and they have no way of enforcing the stupid laws they so vehemently stand behind.

Don't make assumptions about this case as none of you are involved. The media, law enforcement, and especially the DA's office have a magical way of making things sound favorable towards them. Do you recall the outrage over the homeless problem then and the demand that we do something so people weren't begging, stealing, and loitering (and dying) in public places? The enforement and incarciration obviously does NOT work. BUT, many lives are ruined every year as a direct result and little is gained. IF pot were legalized, users would grow it in the back yards. Did Charles Manson live in Santa Ba...

2012-08-17 09:07 AM

You are right, Roger. Bobby Beausoleil was born on SB in 1947 and was one of the Manson family. He was convicted of killing Gary Hinman in July, 1969 after a drug deal gone bad. He (Bobby) was 22 at the time of his conviction in 1970 and was an aspiring muscian/actor. He is serving a life sentence in an Oregon State prison. Gary Hinman's was aparently the first of several senseless murders perpetrated by Charlie Manson, and is said to hevemarked the beginning of "helter skelter". Bobby has been denied release by the parole board, and at one of his more recent hearinmgs the board was a little put off that he is marketing his music and art from prison. Most likely Chalie Manson came to SB because of his association with Bobby Beausoleil.

Keep Our Beaches Free

SB downtown beaches are not the same as the rest of them. People don't go there daily to surf early in the morning. You can park elsewhere downtown and walk along the beach without incurring charges, and most people don't tend to do this on a daily basis.

The other beaches are also very isolated with regards to parking. Walking to Goleta beach for anyone would be a 1-2 hour affair. Surrounding neighborhoods are the only places where alternate parking would be available for Hendry's, and I'm sure the neighbors would love it.

Some beaches I understand, because they are huge tourist spots, but the locals already pay more than tourists for the upkeep on these spots. Why double charge us when we are the ones who have to put up with the tourists? For them its not a big deal once every blue moon, but if you like to fish off the Goleta pier or even hang out a few nights a week, it would add up extremely fast.

In order to pay huge pension benefits to former county employees, present users must now start funding present county services. Get used to this.

You elected union-friendly supervisors for decades who granted all these pension benefits and now you have to start paying for the decisions they made.

If you voted for county supervisors Susan Rose, Gail Marshall and Naomi Schwartz who became the board of supervisor majority for years, this is your reward. Pay up and shut up. You did this to yourselves.

This is what you get putting the employee unions on both sides of the bargaining table who handed out employee perks like penny candy while you get stuck using your dollars to finally pay them off.

It is not surprising. In the period from 1967 to 1971 Santa Barbara and UCSB had become a hot bed for radical politics. One of the sympatyheticaly minded "families" and later organized "Symbioneze Liberation Army" went to UCSB at the time that an innocent Janitor was blown up while cleaning up the UCSB faculty club by a bomb planted there. The prime suspect, a notorious bomb maker for these creeps, was finally arrested in Africa only a few years ago where he had fled from the U.S. from charges of trying to blow up occupied police cars and other homocide investigations. Unfortunately too much time had passed to connect him by physical evidence to the UCSB murder. The state of forensic evidence collection 40 years ago was not what it is today.

Another Beach Parking Meeting

2012-08-17 08:32 AM

When the county is in the position of having to cut services needed by ever taxpayer then it seems right to me that those services used by only a few "to recreate" should pay for that. The up keep of the beaches has been subsidized by a lot ot taxpayers that don't get to enjoy them and that is not really fair. A small fee that covers trash pickup, landscaping, etc. seems fair.

Early 95 *should* be obd1, late 95 might be obd2 (96 was the first year all cars were required to be obd2).

If it is obd1, you may be able to pull the code yourself if you look for the process online. The thing is, I recall Fords needing an oscilloscope or multimeter to measure pulses to determine the code number. Some obd1 cars are as easy as putting a short jumper wire into a connector, turning ignition on, and counting the number of pulses of the check engine light.

If your car IS ob1, the smog tech won't plug anything into it, so he will have no idea whether or not you reset it right before the test or not. If it is obd2, the computer gets data from the ecu to see that the car has checked all parameters (sensors, etc.) for proper functionality.

Obd1 is a little more rudimentary with codes, so if you do pull a code, it may lead to multiple possibilities. Hopefully its something fairly stupid like an o2 sensor. With any luck, you'll have a simple 1 wire o2 that is about $30.

Lots of great tips here, I second the suggestions to keep cash on hand, gas in the car, and ground coffee! Don't forget to keep a good supply of TP, toothpaste, diapers for the kids, and other personal products. If the power is out, the ATMs, gas stations, and grocery stores may be down for awhile.

COX's domination of local television access is the biggest legalized scam in the state. They have raised their rates by nearly 500 percent in the past few years because they have a monopoly and those of us in the area have few choices. This slash and burn approach by COX even goes to threatening the loss of certain programs (they actually advertise these threats) if a viewer dares to get Direct T.V. They have successfully taken away local television and community programing on several channels unless you pay for the addition of a "cable box" which is just another blatant rip-off. The City and County needs to explore alternative sources of television access as soon as possible. This company has been gven a license to steal.

Earthquake Time?

2012-08-17 08:16 AM

I went through several good-sized quakes in LA; never lost power, etc., however, it's smart to be prepared.

The Red Cross sells an earthquake kit, but you can duplicate it yourself. Google "Earthquake Preparedness Kit" and you'll find information on what to keep close at hand (including the bedside) or stored somewhere that will continue to be accessible in the event of structure damage. Fluids are especially important. I also heard that it's smart to keep a comfortable pair of walking shoes in the trunk of your car in case you get stuck somewhere. Also, know how to turn off your natural gas supply.

Ignore the don't worry, be happy folks. Don't worry; be prepared - and then be happy.

Where's the Beef?

2012-08-17 08:14 AM

We purchased some recently only because we had a good experience many years ago that was very good. This time we found that the chicken was not bad at all but I thought the meat was below par. Not really bad but lower quality. They presented themselves ( this vendor) as a big company doing business 'everywhere' so I did some research. I found the company in eastern Washington state, having no ranches of their own as they tried to claim and run by a husband and wife with one other person as company owners. The business did buy about half a million dollars in meat each year. From there I figured they froze it and then handed it off to individual sellers, those being the folks we're talking about. Never could get a handle on how the money worked. This was only one of many operators/companies. Dangerous? I doubt it. A good example of free enterprise, I thought.

I always tell the van guys I'm vegetarian, no argument to that, stops the sales-pitch for good. On the rare occassions we eat beef we buy organic, ranch pastured meat from Rancho San Julian (Sat. Farmers Market); it's slaughtered on the ranch, no stress to the cattle being shipped to a factory. Little more expensive but out-of-this-world delicious and we don't eat meat every week. From the historical point, I like that the ranch has been in the family for 175 years.

This happens every time the contract expires between Cox and every station it carries, but we don't hear about it very often. Muscle flexing...that's all. I wouldn't worry. There is no way the cable company with a monopoly in this city will drop the only TV station in the city. The will never jeopardize their monopoly. Look for a resolution this weekend. Bank on it.

Pond Maintenance

2012-08-17 07:08 AM

Skeeters--for anyone with standing water anywhere in the yard, or with really damp spots as well, use "DUNKS". They are a compressed tablet of Bacillus thuringensis, a bacteria that invades the gut of mosquitos and prevents them from maturing to adults. Just crumble a tablet and toss into the water. Will NOT harm any other water creature. They are listed as an organic control.

I get mine at Ace, but they are everywhere. Get a small package, as they do not last from season to season. Get them fresh every year.

Most of the small pumps used on mini-ponds need cleaning every once in a while. The coarse mesh of the housing gets leaves and debris on it and makes it work too hard to suck water through. Check yours at least monthly, more often if you have lots of errant leaves etc in your yard. Keep your pool topped up--a low pool or fountain bowl will cause the pump to do the dreaded "Air Suck" and burn out prematurely. You may just need a new pump.

How about posting about the repair, and the maintenance tips from the repair person? I'll bet lots of edhatters would benefit from it.

I'd post a link, but I can't, so here's some quoted text:

"The OBD port is under the hood near the air box. [...]the 94 (and 95) 3.8 is still OBD-I. The 4.6L cars for these years are fully OBD-II compliant however[...]

You do not need a code reader to pull codes from your vehicle. The diagnostic port has two main connectors, one of which is a single wire leading to a small, gray plug (closest to the front of the car). Ground this wire and you can perform either the KOEO or KOER tests, and the codes will flash on the "check engine" light on the cluster. Do a couple Googles for the code meanings and test procedures.

The best way to clear the codes is of course to fix the problem and let the computer identify the issue no longer persits. However if you pull the PCM fuse (#15 in the underhood fuse box near the battery) or disconnect the battery the codes will be erased. If the issue the code was pertaining to was not corrected however, the code will of course reappear."

If you don't give the transients money for their booze and drugs, this is what happens.

City policies continue to encourage transients to come to our town, so if we don't keep giving them money for their daily habits they will have to start stealing it from us.

Think of donating to pan-handlers as crime prevention.

Of course, the more generous we are the more of them will continue to come. Perhaps it is time to stop encouraging transients to come to Santa Barbara?
