861 and ALL - does anyone remember the Presidio Cafe next to the Main Post Office? It was there in that great courtyard for about ten years. I knew the owners - wonderful couple - always there - he in the kitchen and she as the "hostess". They had the best quiche I've ever had in my life. I worked downtown and used to go there once a week for lunch. The owner kicked them out - even though they were willing to pay more rent! The owner wanted to put in his own restaurant. Well the new restaurant lasted two or three months. It's called Karma. Good luck C'est Cheese..... But the really sad part is that I go to Our Daily Bread all the time as I am downtown often. I'll probably never go to de la Vina St. :o(

To Tracy and all others who disagree with the one day that cyclists take over the road: During my young teen years in North Idaho riding my bicycle in snow, ice, and heat I experienced motorists yelling and screaming at me while I hovered around the 3" of "bicycle lane" I thought was mine, motorists aimed their cars at me, and several times side view mirrors came within millimeters of hitting my head. I was forced to ride because my father was too busy drinking himself to death to take me anywhere. Here in SB I've seen the same mentality that I saw up North. And my home town of Santa Barbara is supposed to be more "progressive" than the rest. Give it a break, more importantly, give cyclists a little room and a little respect. Unfortunately they are banned from the sidewalk which I personally disagree with considering the lack of a bicycle lane on Mission St. among many others. For some it is their only mode of transportation, for others, it is the only way they can get a lower body aerobic workout to keep healthy and therefore less of a burden on our healthcare system. One day I too will join in taking over the road for that day. By the way, that dog is adorable and the next dog I get will be able to ride like that.

Fat Bigotry is still Bigotry. It is not OK to be a hater on someone just because they don't LOOK the way you think they should look. None of these comments had anything to do with the crime that was committed. A man went into the station store to rob the store. The clerk fought back. The owner was able to help the police collar the man due to his high resolution surveillance cameras. Period. Fat or not fat, the guy committed a crime. We are all individuals. You will meet people from all walks of life and they come in all colors, shapes, sizes, backgrounds etc. Stop compartmentalizing people based on arbitrary things like body size. Enjoy the diversity this world has to offer.

Done Deal |

The Cinema Twin died due to the cost of updates that would have included costly ADA modifications and far costlier seismic retrofits on top of the cost of "redecorating". SB Dodge was one of the "low volume" Chrysler dealerships mandated for closure by the White House and Congress as part of the bailout/reorganization process. A real shame, as this was a small but profitable operation and a lot of local consumers got stung pretty badly having to drive a 100 mile round trip now to get to a dealer that services their make and has a decent reputation. Some big bucks lost on tow trucks and rental cars! The SB city council at one time tried to herd most of the car dealerships in the city to this area but protests (including a few death threats as I recall) finally caused them to reconsider.

Long-eared owls have unmistakably LONG "ears" (feathers on head). This is a Great-horned owl. And as a dog owner and dog walker/hiker, I must express my dismay at you allowing your dog to be so close to this wild creature. I know some people will think it's "cute," but you really shouldn't let any dog near wild animals. It's just not good dog ownership. Leave the wildlife alone.

I hate TV. I don't watch an hour a week. It's been this way for about 10 years. Well, I love watching the Olympics. I wish they would start at 6 p.m. but I am finding things to do until 8 p.m. when night coverage starts. I know the results and I still watch it. If major networks want viewers like me, offer something of interest. I don't want fake boobs; I want women track stars, and volleyball players, and big shouldered swimmers. I want men who swim, and dive, and run, and jump. They don't need to be pretty or handsome. They just need to be competitive. I too dread Sunday when it is all over. Thank you athletes of the world for providing such interesting and basically wholesome competition. It certainly beats American politics, reality crap, and over hyped Monday night football.

Next time this contest rolls around, the parameters should be more specific. Is it non-organic or organic milk? Is it non-fat or full fat? Why is anyone still drinking non-organic milk? There is rbGH (bioengineered growth hormone) injected into cows not provided organic care and feed. Hormones in my milk? No thanks. Pinch your pennies elsewhere. You get what you pay for---99-cent Store? Does it sell enviro laundry soap and dishwashing liquid and shampoo? Be green. Buy organic.

Don't beat yourself up over it. These things happen. Sounds like you feel that you have been a bit petty about the whole deal. You are NOT responsible for buyer remorse. You could have given back the woman her money, but it wasn't what you wanted to do. Once the item is sold, it's not your duty to provide free storage. I think it was generous of you to deliver the purchase. This transaction was final, money exchanged hands. What I think is bad, is the woman not ever calling you. Not courteous or nice. You learned a valuable lesson, which is to make sure it is understood by both parties that the sale is final, and the item is to be picked up (or delivered) within a certain time frame. Don't dwell on it. Another 20 people could have called and you might not have sold that couch. Case closed.

Becky I love your story. I wish this county could be great again not the sorry excuse it has become where everyone is afraid of everything. Too many laws too many sissy's now run the show. I am only 34 and when I went to San Marcos high school 92-96 we used to fill our trunks with guns so we could go to the range after school before it got dark and it was no big deal we even one day showed the school security guard our arsenal he said wow!! cool. He even wanted to come with us. Now cop's have replaced the monitors and they even want to have police dogs searching kids now. When you treat people like baby's guess what? They never really grow up. I fear this county is long gone to the hold your hand forever policy... Very sad.

@306... Freeways and highways are a completely different animal...Amtrack charges customers to ride the train. Anyone with a vehicle can use our highways. Where you come up with your "conservative" banter just shows how clueless you are by placing a label on anyone who opposes your particular view... Another prime example of "labels" is the Chic-filet BS- liberals (ACLU, et al) are all about protecting freedom of speech----UNLESS it is something THEY don't agree with- Then you receive a nasty label or called a conservative-LOL!

Locally Owned Businesses charge more for the same product is not new... it is one of the on going problems with small businesses and their business model. I shop where the cost is least to me, and that is never Lazy Acres. It is a pretty store, with nice employees, but practically everything there is something I can get for less at another store..or online, so why would I spend more there? When local business owners complain about locals shopping at chain stores (not that Lazy Acres did), they never fess up to simply charging too much for the products. Look how busy the 99 cent store is...

I'm not even 60 yet, and I remember archery practice on the UCSB athletic fields, shooting team in high school (where you brought your own rifle with you to school, and practiced shooting on the football field after classes), and people not prohibiting you from killing gophers with a pellet gun in your own back yard. Just like an abstinence only approach to teaching birth control doesn't prevent teen pregnancy, but actually leads to more pregnancies, prohibiting archery and shooting everywhere isn't stopping inappropriate usage, but is leading to more of it. There should be no problem with someone safely practicing archery like this on the beach. The death of common sense and fun due to zealous over-regulation and overblown paranoia makes me ineffably sad.

I think the Olympics has done more for individual motivation, collaboration between differing peoples and groups, and the understanding that helps to avoid conflict than most of our diplomatic efforts ever could.

@254 Amtrak is taxpayer-financed rail transportation. The public spends about $1 billion to subsidize it. The freeways and interstate highways are taxpayer-financed automobile transportation. The public spends several hundred billions to subsidize it. Both are taxpayer subsidized. There is no difference, except in the fevered minds of some conservatives. End of discussion.

You say that Trader Joe's "has the lowest priced milk," adding that Whole Foods "rivals" TJ's $1.99 price, but you neglect to say in the story that Ralphs also has $1.99 milk. To make this look less like a Trader Joe's puff piece, it might have been better to say that TJ's, Whole Foods and Ralphs ALL have the lowest-priced milk.

Funny how people jump to conclusions in the absence of relevant facts. There is nothing in the photos or the description that mentions how crowded said beach is or what is behind the 'target' leaving it to over-imaginative and fertile minds to fill in the blanks. With the missing 'facts' filled in they can then jump to their preconceived conclusions. I love Edhat. Personally I'd feel safer with an archer on what I'd imagine to be a deserted beach than with a few beer swilling gun owners shooting up beer bottles. But that's just my prejudice.

The primary push in this vision is the military domination of all other countries so that their ideals will be imposed on every other nation. Most of the major railroad systems in the US were subsidized from the get-go by the federal government and, from the very start, there was fabulous corruption and graft involved by businessmen and politicians. Then, a few decades ago, the private RR's figured out that there was no way to make a profit from passenger service and abandoned the whole enterprise. Amtrak was invented to fill the void. Trying to re-privatize the whole mess won't work, why would it and who would try? So if tax money is withdrawn then passenger trains will cease to exist in this country.

He even fought after the Register was open and both were out of breath. I would fight back myself to defend myself but I would also be trying to run out of the station to save my skin if given the chance. You don't know if the person has a weapon or even a buddy hiding outside. Be smart people. If someone without a weapon demands cash, just give it to them and call the law.

Whomever they put in charge of beer and wine is doing a great job. They sell STONE beers (from N. San Diego) at just a bit above retail. It is a great thing to watch the coast go by while sipping a fantastic IPA. Let's save Amtrak. It's a magic carpet that takes you to LA while actually reducing stress.

There was a really nice couple, Milton and Jessica Hammer who had an apartment in old El Paseo. I think they had an antique book store. (Not Tecolote) She had a lovely daughter who worked at USPS Main Office. I think Tecolote Books was one of the last buisnesses to leave. Ah the good old days. Other State Street shops like Andera's, M Fredricks, Trenwith's, Firestones, Southwicks, El Patio Menswear,Youngwear, and my favorite, The Hughes were all independent family owned businesses.

i also love the olympics but nbc has ruined my viewing experience. the prime time broadcasts look more like lifetime movies than sport. i watched an hour of their prime time broadcast the other night and only saw 13 points of beach volleyball. the online broadcast of events cuts to advertisements every 3 minutes regardless of what the competitors are doing, interrupting key moments of competition. why can't the amazing accomplishments of the athletes in the games speak for themselves? it's so unnecessary to turn sport into a soap opera, they're plenty exciting without the melodramatic edits.

La Arcada serves many of the small specialty shopping needs today - even an English goods shop and certainly boutique candies as well. Victoria Court is ground zero for the eclectic artsy mish-mash. All former El Paseo shopping opportunities remain alive and well in this town. Do come downtown to patronize them and linger for a cup of tea in the afternoon too. Don't let the vagrants scare you off and just give the skateboarders the right away on the sidewalks so you don't have to fret about getting flipped off as they zoom by. You can even still get some bland gringo grub so you do not over-stimulate your taste buds. Just like the good old days.

No matter what side of isle you are on. You can not dispute that Amtrack IS a losing deal, is poorly operated and VERY underutilized by the public. Lets shut it DOWN.. Give it to private enterprise to make it work. IF a private company can not make a profit and make it fly, then it IS dead for good. As evidenced by everything the government is involved in, they do it poorly, over budget and with very low customer satisfaction. Just think what a wonderful world it would be without bloated politicians wasting our money!

According to Wiki.... "Asclepias physocarpa (also known as Gomphocarpus physocarpus, commonly balloonplant, balloon cotton-bush or swan plant) is a species of milkweed. The plant is native to southeast Africa, but it has been widely naturalized. It is often used as an ornamental plant. The name "balloonplant" is an allusion to the swelling bladder-like pods which are full of seeds."

The myth of the $16 hamburger was created by GOP fruitbat John Mica, who used wacky accounting make it seem as though Amtrak was paying $16 for a burger. Basically, what Mica did was to add the cost of operating the entire train to the cost of making a hamburger--as if the train was just sitting there and not moving passengers. It was an attempt to bamboozle the foolish and simple-minded types with anti-American rhetoric, and in this case, it ensnared one Rachel Hoyt.

I have only been in CA for 4 years and I am so amazed how how little of the land the people can actually use here for recreation. Camping means throwing a tent in a parking lot with hundreds of other people. You can't sleep or camp or have a bonfire on a beach. Can't swim or boat in the lakes. Seriously. How did this happen? Obviously in a socialist state, people can't be trusted with themselves. We must have regulations and government to protect us from ourselves at all times. Yes, a beautiful state, beautiful weather...too many regulations, way too many cops who are incredibly arrogant and interested only in generating revenue and treating people with no respect. Sooo out of control! I personally plan to take my tax money somewhere that I can enjoy living as a free person!

Amazing how some of these commentators were able to conclude that because he was arrested he must have been guilty of violating the vehicle code by driving under the influence. They have managed to rule out any number of other rational possibilities for example, medications taken before going to sleep which may still be affecting the system upon rising. Medical conditions, not the least of which is being extremely tired (its called falling asleep at the wheel). There are a number of illnesses and over the counter medications that are not illegal and from which one might suffer an unexpected reaction. (it has happened to me). So even though it makes for great sensational media attention and a great opportunity to attack a law enforcement officer, before this officer is convicted by accurate facts, I would suggest not rushing to judgment as many here have obviously already done!

RHS Despite the fact we are now in the 21st century there are still countries and forces in the world that see themselves and their views as dominant and wish to impose them on others, like us very tolerant Americans. There are still others who are jealous over the fact, that despite existing poverty and other conditions in this country the vast majority of Amercians enjoy a better than average standard of living and are able to excercize free speech, freedom of religion, freedom to travel, etc. The reason we still have all these things (and more) are because of the hundreds of millions we spend on an up to date military that preserves and protects our country, our freedoms and our life style! Despite your views it is more than a good investment.

093, from the pictures it look like they were traveling in the #3 lane and came to rest with the truck facing backwards in the #4 lane. i don't believe they were traveling in the #1 lane, or as you call it the "fast lane," which is only for passing slower vehicles. no one just drives in the passing lane, especially with a trailer. amazing the boats survived as well as they did!

NewsPress looks pretty healthy to me today. Lots of advertisers, excellent columnists, really good local news and the Scene section on Friday is the highlight reading of the week for activity planning. Wish there were more daily thought-provoking editorials by their great local opinon writers instead of only several times a week. The only thing missing is the back story about how the unions betrayed their very own members, after setting them up to all get canned when they told them they could trash the paper and get away with it as a "free speech" issue. All those smug former staffers spewing their hatred from the Anapamu Street foot bridge asking people to cancel subscriptions to the very paper that was hiring them has to qualify all of them for a Darwin Award.

Still pictures of traffic violations are virtually worthless in doing anything to correct a percieved problem. Moreover if one were to try to use such a picture to identify and then publically vilify someone or make unprovable or unsubstantiated allegations there could be potential liability upon the photographer either in a form of defamation or a category of invasion of privacy by over publication. So, even though it is not illegal to take pictures of people in public places without their consent, the legal issue arises in the arena of "WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH THEM". If they were used in commercial exploitation without a proper release, for example in an advertisement or othe income producing endeavor, the photographer or the publisher could be legally liable for damages.

This sounds very similar to what my housemate and another friend saw (simultaneously and independently) about 3 months ago in the Summerland area. The incident happened at the same time time of the evening and the flight path was the same, from NW to SE, and out over the ocean. Both witnesses were fascinated and talked about the incident at length, and both of their accounts corroborated in all the main details. I hasten to add that the two witnesses neither drink alcohol nor take drugs.

State Senator Al Weingand had his office upstairs ( I worked for him); Win Shoemaker, Assemblyman, was down the hall upstairs too. Crown and Thistle women's clothing was at one end of the courtyard. Ingeborg Landen, with lovely items from Scandinavia. Remember the annual sales at Tweeds and Weeds? For some years a silver shop was on Street of Spain; can't remember the name, but I have a bracelet from there that my mother gave me. Ah, how vibrant El Paseo was then. The Joseph Magnin building ruined it by opening up the thin passageway from State St. to the inner courtyard. The passageway had fascinating little shops of jewelry and collectibles.

I remember El Paseo going back to the late 1950's, but mostly during the 1960's. Maldo's Magic Shop was in the tunnel-like passage way by the restaurant. The Shop Of Primitive Elegance in the center courtyard sold imports mostly from South America -- fur rugs, pottery, very rustic jewelry and such -- and of course Wesley Depp's leather store (custom made sandals!) and Ingeborg Langden's Scandinavian shops, side-by-side, were staples. The small linen shop, closer toward the front was owned and run by the man who hand painted all the street signs downtown in the downtown area, with the distinctive Santa Barbara/Mediterranean lettering style. In 1969 I was a runway model in a fashion show in the restaurant, put on by Joseph Magnin, which was adjacent to the El Paseo. There was also Kong's Chinese imports and a bit later a rare book store and the Coffee Bean (first bean store in SB and one of only five of that chain at the time) in the back. Last thing: the whole front of the El Paseo was originally also old style, with stone pathways -- all the way out to State Street, but was torn down for the renovation when Joseph Magnin was built around 1964. I remember going there as a young child, and the entrance from State Street was really charming, with an upper floor, flowers hanging down from wrought iron balconies, a short tunnel passage way into a first opening with a smaller fountain and some shops, then back through the two passage ways that still exist and into the larger open area.

Yes - my Aunt Kay owned The Poster. I worked there in the late 70's while in college. And yes, she had a wonderful apartment upstairs where we had our family gatherings. She was forced out in the early 90's. The Hammers who owned the rare book store next to the Poster also lived upstairs. There was also a shoe store? where I bought a pair of clogs. Bob's Flower stand. It was a great period of time in Santa Barbara - before all the chain stores moved in.

El Paseo was the focal point for tour bus groups which was the primary support for the small odds and end shops - stuff for day-trippers primarily. Give them a "spanish/mexican" meal fit for gringos at the El Paseo restaurant, let them wander the alcoves and shops and then send them back home on the bus. Yes, the proliferation of oddity/curiosity shops in our town lately run primarily by young people, which seem to attract no customers to support these allegedly State Street "high rents" does give someone pause about their business model viability. Fronts for something else? I dunno. Or do they replace those tourist odds and ends shops formerly residing in El Paseo. Unknown to many is there are residential apartments on the upper floor of the Street of Spain.

The most dismal and wasteful use of the greatest share of our tax money is to pay private contractors for producing war material and weaponry to do devastation to the rest of the world. We spend almost as much as the rest of the world combined in military purchases. Huge profits are made from this by military contractors and sub-constractors (not the soldiers and sailors, by the way). The money spent on public works at least gets spent at home and by middle class working folks.

Ingeborg's last name was Landon. And on the Anacapa Street side of El Paseo in the early-mid 1970s was the country's second Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (the first, I believe, was in Westwood), operated by Tom De Corte (who moved to South Africa where he passed away a few years ago), and a RugCrafters store (which moved out to La Cumbre Plaza to survive). There was a Poster Shop (owner Kay lived above the art curio store at courtyard entrance to Street in Spain). Lovely memories.

The destruction of the El Paseo courtyard complex is one of the saddest stories I know about "old" Santa Barbara's demise. And I remember one more little store, called "Under The Greenwood Tree" -- lovely old musical instruments and a knowledgeable music-lover owner. I also seem to remember that Al Weingand (well known politico of the time) had an upstairs office off the courtyard. Having lunch by the little central fountain in that outdoor cafe area was one of the great pleasures of life -- Paseo Nuevo will never hold a candle to that.

@122P: I think (but could be wrong) that you're referring to Ingeborg Landin (sp?). COMINICHIS: I don't think Paseo Nauseam had anything to do with the demise of El Paseo. @073 gives a concise, accurate account of how El Paseo was done in through total mismanagement by the Trust for Historic Preservation, which turned out to be completely untrustworthy and preserved nothing. As far as tourists go (aren't we supposed to call them "visitors" these days?), they never seemed to have any trouble at all finding El Paseo. They were always underfoot, dripping their ice cream cones that they'd bought across the street at Thrifty's, taking pictures and looking at things. Not that that's a bad thing. When I was a student at SBHS I used to spend a lot of $$$ at the Tecolote Book Store. One day I wanted a book but didn't have quite enough money. The nice saleslady suggested that I open a charge account. I told her I was only 17. That didn't matter. Without so much as a parental signature, I had my first charge account, which I used for years. Imagine that happening today. What is amazing is that El Paseo was allowed to slip into oblivion without the community even realizing the tragedy that was going on right before it's eyes. One of our greatest local treasures is now consigned to office space. How absolutely pathetic.

Yes it is terrible that it is all offices now. It was Paseo Nuevo that killed it. I used to work at the antique dress shop called Marla's and the La Belle models would do fashion shows of the Vintage gear and we would dress them up and they girls would stroll around the courtyard while people ate. All the shops were charming and owned by locals. It was the best place to shop, eat and work! There apartments upstairs were fabulous! The tour buses would park in their private lot and the tourists would eat at the restaurant and shop in the shops and tour State Street,-- which pre-Paseo Nuevo and all the CORPORATE shops that ruined the local small business's on State St. It would be so nice to take our city back! I would love to see the offices returned to retail spaces and the tour buses come back to the heart of old Santa Barbara again!

Why is the 101 through Santa Barbara one of the trashiest in the State? Crews come in for other jobs and the trash just sits there. Thank goodness for the Adopt a Highway volunteers.
