There are so many factors that play into proper treatment for this painful injury. There are several surgical options for treatment. As a veterinary technician who has been through two surgeries with my own dog I highly recommend Dr Ian Holsworth at Veterinary Medical and Surgical Group in Ventura or locally Dr Eric Wright. I would definitely get two opinions if your vet didnt recommend a surgeon. Surgery is very expensive and following post op instructions is vital to recovery. I agree with the previous poster about confinement and pain meds asap. Pet insurance will not cover any cost since you do not currently have a policy. It would be considered a pre existing condition. Even though surgery is costly and recovery is time consuming it is well worth it to have your dog happy and healthy.

I know Aug. 13, '78. My first job. I think I woulda been outside the building FAST, but if not, hardware (screws, nuts and bolts in a large metal cabinet) would've fallen on me or at least my desk. I don't believe in earthquake weather. I got the 10-20 drops in July; today the pavement almost got wet! I stood in it. I LOVE rain. The lighting of the patchy clouds during twilight and before moonrise was stunningly beautiful.

*Information* in a post like your notification would be appreciated! "I wanted to give all of you a heads up. We have a huge ride (500+ riders) up here in Santa Barbara, CA every summer. This year the ride will be on Sunday August 8th at 12:00 noon. The ride will be meeting at the bottom of State street where the road meets the pier (dolphin fountain). The ride is mostly made up of cruisers (all kinds). But anyone and everyone regardless of bike type is welcome." http://bmxsociety.com/topic/48191-santa-barbara-fiesta-cruiser-ride/ Looks like SB to IV and back: "For folks that dont know....SB is like the BMX Cruiser capitol of california (think Austin). The fiesta ride from what I am told ... they start at The bottom of State Street at Stearns Wharf and ride to Isla Vista and back. usually stopping at several spots for more beers, snacks and whatever then a major stop in Isla Vista for some Dirt Jumps, then back to Stearns. its around 20 miles round trip ... its literally organized by word of mouth only."

Get your dog on pain meds and crate her while you do research. (I can see how this thread may get rather contentious.) I have no info on pet insurance, but -- Discuss the problem and surgery with Dr. Dalo, La Concepcion Animal Hospital. He has a great surgery reputation. http://www.laconcepcionanimalhospital.com/blog/ And I've heard great things about Ventura's Veterinary Medical & Surgery Group. I know several dogs & owners who went there with great results. http://www.vmsg.com/ Email K9 Pals and ask them (I know they've often used Dalo.). Ask DAWG & SB Humane Society, and CARE4PAWS (http://care4paws.org/). Ask your friends & neighbors -- this is a very common injury. Ask your current vet! What DID your vet say? Take some time and don't rush the surgery, as long as pup is taken care of. Is the dog on a pain med already? All this is BIG money. I've also read about dog families who skipped surgery and did rehab. Much depends on the personality of the dog. And of course the extent of the injury. Rehab is hard, whether or not surgery is done. There will be a LOT of rest and crating either way. Good luck & please keep us posted!

I would love to have a dog, but I don't want to pick up poop so I don't own one. A big pet peeve of mine is people being inconsiderate and thoughtless. I think that's at the root of this issue.

@516 wrong! RE: Cloud seeding - there's an undated PDF document if you google "California cloud seeding" that details Santa Barbara's cloud seeding program up to 2005 authored by North American Weather Consultants. Also, Chapter 14 of California's 2005 Water Plan is called "Precipitation Enhancement" ("aka 'cloud seeding'") and also shows a map of the areas where "precipitation enhancement" was ongoing at that time, that includes Santa Barbara County (and Sierra Nevada counties, but no other coastal counties other than SB???). So, yes, we have cloud seeding in SB County and the state-produced information on it is extremely easy to find if anyone cares to look for it.

Lois Capps paid no price for her "anti-war vote". It was sure to pass and the DemParty handlers allowed a few errant votes to take place, if it played well with their troops back home. No, the money spent on the Iraq war could not have been used for "something else" unless the people voted for it. It wasn't just laying around to be used on anything. It belonged to the taxpayers and they voted to use/waste it on the Iraq War in the post 911 trauma because they wanted to blame and fix something. It was a stupid move, but it did have bi-partisan support. Lois's vote against it was a weenie vote - it didn't matter. It was not an act of courage. It did not go against her party. It was a safe pass to make sure she was still around to keep voting lock-step with the Dem Party bosses from that point forward. BTW: The government is not just one giant piggy bank or ATM for liberals to spend on anything they want.

I watched the parade. The first item was a line of police motorcycles - this seemed to reflect the heavy police presence which has become a hallmark of recent Fiestas. As always, lots of beautifully groomed horses, with riders in traditional uniforms, and plenty of children throwing flowers and confetti on cue. As a parade it had a regimented and almost militaristic tone - but most spectacular for the equestrian appreciators amongst us. Then I walked over to de la Guerra and ate the tastiest fish taco for lunch.

Lobsters have exoskeletons which means they can't grow with their armor squeezing them in so they must discard the old and fill in the new. It's a process called molting. They are very vulnerable after the molt and hide deep in crevices until the new armature toughens up. It's seasonal and it happens en masse. Nothing nefarious or domoic about it.

517, today's rain event is pretty local to this part of S. California. Also, there are no current tropical systems in the Pacific basin. The radar images are a little deceptive - the cloud base is somewhat high (over 10,000ft), much of what doppler is showing is not reaching the ground on account of evaporation. Re. cloud seeding - that program was experimental in the 1960s and AFAIK there is no current program involving cloud seeding. The results of those experiments were inconclusive/ambiguous, in that sometimes clouds and rain were produced, and other times, nothing happened.

Ok Fiesteros...so here's the update. Everybody is ok. The firefighters rigged ladders so the trapped "fiesteros" could get out of the elevator, which was stuck between the the 1st an and 2nd floor. The elevator was rated for 13 people and it seems there were about 14 people in the car. So - on the way UP, the elevator the car stalled, and was there for between 30 and 40 minutes. Buzz kill for sure. Guess the elevator people need to reassess the capacity of the elevators these days because I think people are a lot bigger than they used to be, what with super-sizing and all. Hopefully the people who got stuck got to have at least one marggie at the party, which was on one of the upper floors. Always a good idea to take the stairs...Viva la Fiasco. This sounds off subject, but with all the talk of 50 Shades of Grey, I'm thinkin' we might have a bunch of "Balboas" and "Vivas" born in about 9 months at the brand spankin' new birth center at Cottage.

I'm sure you know the odds of you ending up with a home and being a responsible, nurturing guy were against you. I hope you're very proud of yourself. You rock. I'm sorry for the challenges that Belinda faces and the fact that you have to deal with them but I gotta say...every time I read "Ballistic Belinda" it cracks me up. Has such a great sound to it. I'm thinking of changing my name. And maybe becoming a rock star because of it. Maybe "Ballistic Belinda and the Bipolar Babes".

Definitely molts. I get tar on my feet and/or shoes nearly every time I walk on the beach during the "warmer" months. You are very lucky that this is the first time that you've had tar on your shoes, but the "oil" had nothing to do with the bug shells.

489 I am personally glad the police are taking these crazy thugs down.. first and foremost it sends a strong message that the police are not messing around and if there is any sign of a weapon and/or harm to self or others.. Put them out of their misery.. Second we as taxpayers will not have to support these types of people for free room and board and education while they are in prison... So kudos to all law enforcement that I feel, is finally taking care of business!!!

I looked at the radar image and the cloud pattern (I'm no meteorologist but...) looks totally weird. There are denser cells but still really lightly scattered to the north of us and much less dense cells passing us by and in LA, but almost no rain cells over the ocean. This makes me wonder: is this the kind of pattern that cloud seeding produces? The radar image I saw didn't show the whole Pacific Ocean to get perspective on a tropical storm. Any ideas?

There's nothing unusual about this. This type of summer system - often linked to the monsoon - with mid atmosphere instability resulting in local showers and the odd thunderstorm happens at least once in most summers. We had another system like this only a few weeks ago, except that one was from the residual moisture left over from an Eastern Pacific tropical system, well to the south.

*Domoic* acid does seem "demonic" in its lethal effects on marine life. There is a natural tar seep in the cliffs between the Slough outlet and More Mesa Beach, which might acount for some of the beach tar. Perhaps someone will be able to determine whether the lobster deaths are from either of these causes or something else.

304274: And the development for the field at the end of Hollister between Elwood elementary school and the 101 overpass? Such a shame to see all these open spaces become housing. My opinion is there are too many people here already. I understand tourists, we are a tourist town. But we don't need more housing here. If we pave and build over everything, we won't be beautiful SB/Goleta any longer.

Legally, once the cans are on the street, they are not your property anyways. This is why it's also illegal for someone to root through your cans. Regarding this issue, when I had no dogs or kids, I didn't care that others did, brought them to restaurants or put their sealed bags of poop in my can. Now I have both and the level of outrage I see over minor issues like a whining child or dog out to lunch could only happen in the cocoon of white people's problems we have here in SB.

It could be placed on the side of an industrial building along the freeway, or on one of the freeway walls (inside or out) but please don't keep affronting us locals with it. We have so many very talented artists here that could create a beautiful smaller mural or mosaic or other work of art -- something that would bring a smile instead of a frown as we walk past.

What they learned is the public is always against paying for anything they used to get for free. Doesn't matter what it is. And here is another one for free: the public does not want to raise their taxes either. Moral of the story: the government has to stop handing out things for free and the public needs to stop being so greedy. Oh, that's right, the public is the government. Talk among yourselves. Leaders lead, and some times, often times this means going against the public selfishness and making decisions for the public good. Lesson two: people protest loudly when a price goes up a dollar. But then think you are exceedingly stingy if you only reduce the price a dollar. Same dollar -some times it is too much and some times it is too little. All subjective, which is why what the "public" is often the last person to listen to.

It seems unfair that those of us that were lucky enough to move to SB and find housing before this project was proposed want to deny others their chance at paradise. Intentionally renting out an illegal second unit in a single family zoned neighborhood smacks of arrogance and indifference to her own constituents who are asked to abide by the same zoning regulations. No illegal second units allowed typically in this part of town. But maybe there was a legal exception at her address. Lois may have stepped into this one big time if she knew this was illegal, yet to did it anyway. But naturally, everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Stay tuned to learn which might have been the greater crime: running an illegal rental, or withholding income from IRS. Or both? Lois, I think you are tired and need to come home.

Counterfeit money passed at the old... |

Why is this big news? The counterfeiting drug dealers pass counterfeit bills at the Chumash casino all the time. Maybe it is because the the Sheriff's former civilian P.R. man was married to the casino P.R. Woman. Keep all the crime, drugs, alcohol abuse and prostitution going on in the "Chumash casino Resort and Hotel" from the public it is bad for business. Thank goodness for the Valley Voice Newspaper that is not affraid to tell the truth and report the facts. Too bad it is not more widely read on this side of the mountains. That is a much bigger story than this one. But then KEYT makes a lot of money from the advertising paid for by the casino. Maybe that explains the importance of this small story versus the major one involving casino crime occurring on a regular basis and that recieves little public distribution.

Hey 456, do 160 sponsored bills (you'll have to remove the line break tag, Edhat inserts them when URLs wrap for some reason) and missing only 2% of votes (under the Congressional average of 2.4%) over a 14 year period not count as actually doing anything? What do you expect Representatives to do but propose and vote on bills? That's how legislation works. I can understand your frustration or anger at her breaking her one-term pledge, but please. Exercise your brain and do a little bit of research before you attack someone's work ethic. And, before you start, voting ideologically with one's party doesn't mean they don't have a work ethic or are some sort of puppet. Otherwise the same thing would apply to a vast majority of Representatives and Senators of both parties.

didn't know so many Maldonado lovers read EdHat! Really, do you think that a woman that spends most of her time in Washington and flies home almost every weekend is personally collecting rent checks and depositing them? That is almost certainly left up to her bookkeeper or accountant. And if renting out a room is illegal, 1/2 of Santa Barbara would be paying fines! Lois Capps is one of the few people in Congress that refused to give Bush the right to invade Iraq. For that courageous act, I will vote for her as long as she runs, for any office whatsoever. If we had a whole Congress of Lois Capps, I bet we wouldn't be wasting money in stupid wars, and could use the savings to give everyone universal healthcare!

Hard to imagine she did anything unethical in as much as she has never DONE much of anything at all. It must be strictly something in her private life not in her "nonexistent public servant tenure"! It is amazing how her pledge to only do one full term, after the partial term she inherited from her deceased husband was over, disappeared into thin air (or hot air as politics goes). Undoubtedly her willingness to be a puppet to the democrats in Congress and their agenda, convinced them to urge her to keep running. As long as the voters in this District didn't care they had an empty dress for a representative taking up space in the House of Representatives why rock the boat and lose another guaranteed vote

That tax code ought to be re-vamped. Taxes based on income is so archaic. If you don't work, you don't pay taxes? Everyone ought to pay something. Everyone. A lot of people have big money but it's unverifiable income and pay nothing in taxes.

Well, as someone who has spent a great deal of time on a farm, shoveling stalls, cleaning bins, etc., to say nothing of birthing and potty-training several children, I found the whole discussion enlightening. It explains our sanitized, medicated, spritzed and chemically-enhanced world. Everybody poops! Poop should be appropriately disposed of for health and aesthetic reasons. We all need to help each other manage the poop. Allowing someone to use one's garbage container to get the poop to an appropriate place post haste is to me the very essence of civilized. Refusing to cooperate, because of some minor whiff of nature to oneself, well, not. City folks. No wonder the human race is in trouble.

SY: Yes. Many Maldonado supporters are the very same people who want to take away womens' right to reproductive healthcare, reproductive choice, and equal pay. So yes, these are people who have issues with women, and their animosity is quite obvious. The repeated use of terms like "old" and "forgetful" just reinforce the sexist attitudes that women over a certain age are "useless", while men of the same age are "wise" and "powerful" (she's two years younger than Antonin Scalia).

The nanny-state is complete when the schools themselves (run by nanny-state teacher unions) say they have to step in now and act as surrogate parents. No, they have to act as teachers with dignity and respect to educate students in proper age-based curriculum as required by our public education system. They can refer social problems out to appropriate non-profits, religious organizations, and state care facilities. But they are paid to teach, and they had darn well better start doing what they are getting paid for. Stop dressing, acting and talking like the very people they are entrusted to educate and improve. Teachers themselves have brought on this crisis in the classroom. Get back to teaching and letting problem kids know they have standards for proper classroom conduct. Which is to sit there and learn. There is nothing but unstructured chaos now in classrooms and the worst performance scores in the industrialized world.

Affect vs. effect: http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/affect-versus-effect.aspx It's actually pretty straightforward. The majority of the time you use affect with an a as a verb and effect with an e as a noun. When Should You Use Affect? Affect with an a means "to influence," as in, "The arrows affected Ardvark," or "The rain affected Amy's hairdo." Affect can also mean, roughly, "to act in a way that you don't feel," as in, "She affected an air of superiority." When Should You Use Effect? Effect with an e has a lot of subtle meanings as a noun, but to me the meaning "a result" seems to be at the core of all the definitions. For example, you can say, "The effect was eye-popping," or "The sound effects were amazing," or "The rain had no effect on Amy's hairdo."

This guy was convicted of the crimes of which he is accused. Maybe in this case the conviction reflects the reality of what he was alleged to have done.... HOWEVER, in a very large proportion of cases which have ended in capital punishment in this country throughout history, the overwhelming proportion of those who have been executed were convicted on the grounds of corrupt witnesses, corrupt law enforcement officers, corrupt DAs, corrupt judges, incompetent defense lawyers or public defenders and racism. Furthermore, the overwhelming majority of people who have been executed (ie murdered by the State) were of poor financial standing, meaning that they were incapable of purchasing justice, as wealthy people can, and do, with great effect.

$8,000 versus $4,000,000 is a pretty big difference. I'm not saying that Capps' violation should be excused because the amount is smaller, but to criticize someone who voluntarily paid the back taxes and admitted fault while another individual sits around doing battle over five hundred times the amount... I dunno. No one is squeaky clean, it doesn't exist. But there's some animosity surrounding Capps that just doesn't make sense to me. Is it because she's a woman? I wonder.

Maldonado's tax trouble are based on a family business that has a CPA firm doing the books and filing the tax's - His brother and father run the business - As a small business owner of 25 years I have had to fight for the correct billing from the IRS. Lois got checks every month in exchange for a room in a neighborhood that are all single family dwellings. Unless her handlers rented the room and got the money and hid it from her. Or maybe the renter mailed the checks to her CPA ? It all sounds fishy.

I agree in good old fashioned outdoor playtime but I also want to find something that helps promote self-esteem and a sense of achievement...for 30 mins to one hour a week :) Keep the suggestions coming! Here's few that i've heard from friends recently in case anyone else is looking. 1. the Sailing Center has afterschool drop-in classes. Kids get to sail for 2 hours, 1-3 days per week. 2. Notes for Notes music program 3. Municipal Golf Course - youth program

How much do they actually pay out of their pockets for helicopter rescues? I think it depends on the person being proposed to. I would have liked a very public and fun proposal (didn't get it), but some are more uptight about that sort of thing and need a less public setting. Depending on what your beloved's personality is, you should go that direction. Does she like crowds? then go to the pier and invite everyone you know to be there and suprise her with a rose and a proposal. No crowds? Go to a quiet park or hike location "alone" and profess your love. Best of luck to you! p.s. I still married him. What can I say "I love the guy"!

Too bad John Dell doesn't know what spelling and grammar are. Except for "Prevantative", these are matters of usage, and his suggestions are mostly optional. BTW, "orientate" predates "orient" (although I too prefer the latter). My pet peeve, which is about a spelling error, is the use of "lead" for "led", which is now seen even in major publications.

If you can not afford to raise kids properly and tend to their needs - then do not have them. Or at least do not have 7 of them. Until we address this issue we will never solve the problem. America was founded on people assimilating themselves, working hard, and having some sense of moral obligation. Many Asian families who immigrated here working 3 jobs to make ends meet were able to raise kids that did well in school. Why is this? They never wanted/needed an ESL program to get by. Instead of having your kids make those cascarones that little our streets every fiesta - have them do their homework.

Love the reflections in the first image and the light bouncing off the rocks in the foreground. The interesting thing about the moon is that it is essentially a giant reflector bouncing sunlight. Exposure wise the Sunny Sixteen Rule applies to capture detail out that celestial body of brightness. But at that setting everything else goes pitch black!? That's where layers come in handy or HDR is very effective. Expose for the moon, expose for the surroundings, shoot one in the middle and let Photoshop (or Photomatix, HDR Efex or....) blend the three so you get details in the brights and the darks then tonemap to taste. But keep it real as HDR loses favor when people get too "creative" with it.

What is this mantra of "sorry for our officers" moments after one of these (now weekly) police killings is posted on edhat. Can we at least wait for a perfunctory investigation? The rubber stamping of "justified" before the body is even cold makes me wonder why they waste $$$ doing any follow-up. We know what their conclusion will be.

There's got to be some bad drugs floating around SM that's making people believe they are action heroes, or video game characters and challenge the local leos. Brandishing a replica gun after an hour long car chase? Really? I guess if these guys were in the Middle East they'd be strapping bomb vests before a night of clubbing.

I think the real losers here are the voters of District 24 who have the choice between a tax cheat on the left, and a tax cheat on the right. It's too bad we're now forced to choose between 2 evils in the top 2 system (which Abel helped to pass). Sorry third parties, you are now officially shut out in CA thanks to our new "open primaries." We should at least have a "none of the above" designation when both candidates are terrible.

Caught the problem? Oversight? Slip of the memory? The sad part of all of this is even when someone you like messes up, you cover for them. A slip of your memory is leaving your car keys behind... Once. Not 48 consecutive times. What we have here is another example of outright lies to cover up incompetence promoting outright tax evasion. Everyone should do the same when their faux leaders encourage it. Did I say leader? Only when caught should any of us admit guilt. Cut in lines at the movies. Cut off cars on the street. J-walk. Just say "Oh it was an oversight" when you get busted. I'm sure the cops will understand.

Are there some bad drugs going around making folks who normally do mostly harmless dumb stuff go for this kind of crazy Hollywood stunts? I mean, c'mon, brandishing a replica gun after a 30 minute car chase into the next county and back is classic Darwin Award stuff. 4263... you're confusing the shootings in North County with those in Orange County. Big difference.... down in OC the "victims" weren't carrying guns or assaulting an officer with a deadly weapon.

Teacher unions constantly brainwash teachers to complain they are: 1. underpaid, 2. overworked, 3. under-appreciated and 4. suffer from bad morale Union bosses have to keep the troops unhappy to justify their own mega-salaries paid for by forced union dues. Teachers can opt out of paying their union dues any time they want, and make an in lieu charitable donation. What is scary is how many teachers come here and parrot this union party, line without a shred of self-reflection. This is not a person I want teaching our future generations. I hope they take their unhappiness and leave the classroom ASAP. There is 8.5% unemployment in this country. There are thousands of unemployed college grads. Move aside and leave the door open for someone who appreciates the job and hates their teachers unions enough to donate that mandated union dues to organizations that can truly help education.

715: Your speculation is based on nothing more than your opinion. I especially like the part where you state that the problem kids have families around, so there is no excuse. Since you said it, this must be the situation for every child, right? Its not like low income parents ever work 2 jobs, giving them virtually no time to spend with their kids. Its not like they ever work night shifts, requiring them to sleep during the day. They NEVER work weekends, the best time to take your kid to a park, fishing, camping, whatever. The kids in montecito aren't exactly angels, and have their fair share of problems too. I'll say this much, they are better off being raised by a nanny than an older brother who took the wrong path in life.

This housing is needed. If you don't need housing, you're in great shape. But we can't pretend there isn't a need. We have a certain population density in this area. It's never going back to the good old days some of you remember. Growth happens. And I for one think Towbes is one of the better developers we have in this area. Just my opinion, but he makes nice, safe, quality and aestheticly pleasing buildings.

I've just about given up on pointing out grammar and spelling errors (and I make my own fair share) but it's refreshing to see that there are more than a few of us who still care. Are there still copy editors working in print media? You know, people who read material before publication. Grammar and Spell Check programs just don't cut it. My current peeve is "axed" for "asked". Why are these being called "condominiums" when they are really apartments for rent? There are no owner-occupied units in Willow Springs currently. It's all rental housing.

At least Lois caught the problem, reported it, amended her returns and paid all the back tax she owed. She is not trying to hide the mistake, she took full responsibility and corrected it. Sounds damn ethical to me, Abel. BTW Abel, mistakes do happen, it is how one handles them that counts and her handling her's shows strong ethics and accountability in my book.

I used to have a partner who would tell me something like "No, it's not full, it will be at 11:37 tomorrow night." Drove me NUTS. If it's beautiful, that's all I care about. I can look up the dates and times or study astronomy if I want to.

I think people will complain about poor quality, but I don't even own a camera. Wonderful composition between the 2 palm trunks. I was outside many times tonight to see the moon before the fog obscured it.

After 11 years of officiating for local weddings, I hear that some people take a little vacation and wait for just the right moment, which is usually the moment in which it feels right to you, and you are alone and uninterrupted. A sunset is nice, if it is quiet and serene enough. You need to plan a few activities so that there are enough options, should one or two of the moments not feel right. A sentimental spot to the couple, or any quiet beautiful and romantic spot will do...especially if it is at sunset. All that said, it matters not where you propose because any place will be perfect for you! Best of luck!

After School Activities |

While it may be tempting or sometimes necessary for parents to schedule activities for children after school, studies show that what children really want is unscheduled time to just "be"- especially if that can happen in the home along with a parent or relative in charge...even an after school nanny will do, but the point is to allow them to have down time...After spending more than 25 years working with children...I agree with this.
