It's actually the "Hotel Californian". My parents spent the first night of their honeymoon their in 1930. Post earthquake. It was the only night they spent in a hotel. The rest of the honeymoon was camping.

My understanding is that the facade will be retained. So many memories. I'm just old enough to remember the Leilani Room....

Oral Surgeon

2012-07-31 10:05 PM

Our dentist recommended Dr. Bienstock for impacted wisdom teeth for our son (no appointment set yet). Dr. B wasn't available when daughter needed hers out and we went to Dr. Kiken (another recommendation from our dentist). Daughter was very happy with Dr. K (he very clearly and reassuringly explained the whys and wherefores - she was terrified - but she felt he spoke to her as an adult). Based on previous comments, seems like either Dr. B or Dr. K would be fine. (Expect the kid to look like a chipmunk for a few days.)

fair and reasonable is zero. chiropractors are quacks, plain and simple. i once took my xray from a reputable s.b. chiropractor to an actual licensed physician...he literally burst out laughing at the WWII era image. i tried to show him the "subluxtion" the chiropractor showed me and he pointed out these white spots throughout the image. one MRI later and my herniated disc was diagnosed, I had an immediate treatment that relieved the pain and am doing fine today while my friends are spending $50 a week on maintenance sessions at the bone cracker. btw, why would cracking your back be any better than cracking your knuckles for relieving the pain of a physical injury?

2012-07-31 07:51 PM

The laws against marijuana remain in place because organized crime benefits massively from their enforcement, as do the federal agencies in bed with the drug cartels. The status quo is maintained because the powers-that-be - including local officials - are scared of change, fearing that they will lose votes on account of being accused of "going soft on drugs".

The reality, is that keeping things the way they are is "going soft on organized crime and gang activity". Portugal knows the deal - they decriminalized ALL drugs, resulting in PLUMMETING crime statistics, drug related health problems, violence and overdosing. Obviously the powers-that-be in the US are invested in maintaining crime - its so profitable for the privately run prison industry.

To much water pressure on the Vactor truck or the operator ran the cleaning hose to slow.
Run water in your sinks ( fill up the P traps ) to stop the gases from filling your house. If we had to open all of the clean outs when we clean the Wastewater lines we'd get nothing else done and everyone would be complaining because it wasn't all still flowing downhill.
Weigh the options and be happy that's all that happened!

P.S. Don't pour grease down the the sink.

3411... $29Million loss last quarter is hardly killing it by any stretch of an overactive imagination. It's been losing money for the last 4 quarters. For the last 3 years it's stock price has been hovering between 0.50$ and 1.50$, that's a penny stock. It's future projection of earnings per share is -186% (that's red) compared to the industry outlook of 21% EPS growth over the next 5 years. That spells dismal to me.

I'm no company apologist but in a bad economy when EVERYONE, except Mittens and his merry band of 1%ers, is struggling to keep what they had last year these selfish louts want more at the expense of the rest of us. The company is no longer the bad guy when greedy union workers want the rest of us to make concessions for them.

When the company goes into Ch11 I won't be feeling sorry for the rats who wanted more for themselves while the ship was sinking.

I hope those injured heal quickly. Seems like many are uncomfortable looking at the costs of extreme sports, (yes a triathlon is extreme). Seems most edhatters like to simply point the finger at already agreed upon health harmers..instead of focusing on the point that 297P makes. I think it is interesting....and being a super athlete does not keep someone from having heart disease, diabetes, etc....the point being made was that it creates more sport related injuries...which has costs...that people dont like to talk about. Nice point 297P!

I've been through it all, including surgery, and am convinced that had I seen Serena prior, I would have avoided the knife. I have afriend who suffered for years until I convinced him to see her. He called the next day laughing and covers every tab whenever I see him to this day. That was 10 years ago.

Yes, there are plenty of things you can do. Trapping is one. Putting up owl boxes to encourage owls is another. Wham, Scam, Thank You Ma'm!

2012-07-31 06:16 PM

I also had an experience with a scam for an apartment. On West Alamar, in the Oak Park neighborhood. ome ??lady?? From Texas claimed to own this empty apartment, which actually exists, and is vacant, but is in a building clearly marked as managed by a local company. She was asking for a very low price because she was "more interested in havingit maintained properly than in making money". Too good to be true. She was in Texas and wanted me to mail the money before I ever saw the key or the apartment. On Zillow, showed to be for sale - also dubious. Her name was Nancy, ostensibly, no last name.

I insisted on a) seeing the place first, INSIDE; b) getting a key first, before sending money; c) having the management company show me the place. she did not go for the imperative ultimata.

Isn't this interstate commerce fraud, over telephone line, and therefore the jurisdiction of the federal ICC and FCC? shouldn't the FBI be investigating this? Who ya gonna call?

I'd like to recommend Dr. Gary Kurilla who I recall was $75 for the preliminary and $50 per treatment. He uses kinesiology, muscle feedback and wow it works. He can fix most anything in 4 treatments. Most will want you once or twice a week for years!
I've seen quite a few in this town and my late wife worked for an amazing guy in Reseda when we met. I really prefer Palmer trained guys, I want to be cracked and manipulated. I've seen some "gentle force" guys too and well, the results were also "gentle". There's at least one charlatan out there I am afraid to say. I saw a dozen before I found Gary.
Dr. Zemella on upper State is also not bad. Very nice guy.

Yes Entrada includes BeBop, the parking lot that was a car lot across from that and the coffee shop and California hotel as well as most of the funk zone. Yet it wasn't developers holding the city hostage. It was once again terrible negotiation skills and pathetic language in the contracts. There's no excuse for 20 years of tax revenue down the drain and additionally, such an ugly entrance to our town from the beach. Entrada will never get built and was a lame idea anyway. Timeshares and condos. Stop worrying about parking and get er done. Want to live there? Park on the street or have no car.

I agree with others about trying one more time to kindly explain to them that it is very inconvenient and never ok for them to block the driveway and make you wait after honking your horn. If/when that fails, post a "no parking" or "do not block" sign. Then the next time it happens, simply call a tow truck. After the first tow, I guarantee that it won't happen again.

He used to personally offer financing, but has now outsourced that particular to an outside agency that has very reasonable terms.

Its a competitive industry there is a reason Long's got bought out, Eckerd isn't around, etc. Decling profits or increased losses, competition from grocery stores and Walmart/Targets increases pressure on stores like Rite Aid to stay open.

So they make a "killing" and they are part of the basis for Occupy? They actually lose money and I would hope the average occupier is not as ignorant as your statement.

@Aquaholic: The dispute is more about their "primetime" coverage, not the online availability. Most people go the traditional TV route.

Examples of annoyances caused by NBC (google "#nbcfail):

In men's Gymnastics Team All-around - They only showed 2 US events (floor excercise & vault. Granted, I know the US didn't do well, but most of us watching primetime would still like to see the US key events. Additionally, they didn't show anyone on the rings (in medal round or qualifiers), and only 1 clip of 1 contender on the highbar.

In Women's 200M Breastroke - They revealed the Gold winner minutes before the race was on TV.

Many other small tidbits as well.

@303406 - I would assume that most people that don't want the spoilers are avoiding news sites and the like. It's not expected to have said information revealed somewhere like this.

The point is simply to be nice regarding spoilers (whether it be the Olympics or the Summer Blockbuster). Don't need to be mean about it. If you want to talk about certain victories, there are plenty of appropriate forums for that.

Communication.... as 3355 noted if you haven't talked to them before and they believe the system of you honking works better than having to park their car correctly you need to let them know it is not working for you. Be cordial. It's only because you've bottled it up so long that you've created such a charge around this. They may be totally oblivious to your frustration because you haven't let them know. Talk to them before you jump to conclusions of how they will react.

Updated Report

As a young women in Santa Barbara it terrifies me to read these comments that have been posted about a young women who was raped by someone she use to date. How can anyone think that someone would come forward with rape charges like this that are not true. What would they get from doing that? An article on edhat where Santa Barbara citizens are ripping them to shreds? Just remember that this is a short article about a real person!!! We have no idea what the whole story is and frankly if we did I am sure any normal human being would have some empathy for this woman who was RAPED by someone I am sure she trusted. Do not forget this is a real person that you all are calling stupid and saying that something just does not add up. What makes you an expert in this situation? It is never okay to rape anyone and any person who thinks otherwise shouldn't be posting about it in a public forum.

303115 is correct. The public works dept will issue a permit. You must buy the signs yourself and post them 72 hrs in advance. The permit should be diplayed in the windshield of the moving van while it is parked in the no parking zone. I obtain one if these permits once a year for our vendors to park on SB street for an annual event at the courthouse. I usually get 2 spaces for a $34 permit.

145P: The penalties for driving after drinking are much stricter in parts of Europe. The UCSB grad students here are used to having a designated sober driver whenever they go out drinking downtown. I think a zero tolerance policy for driving after drinking more than one glass of wine or one beer with dinner should be the policy. No plea bargaining, no celebrity exceptions. Drinking and driving should be completely unacceptable and extremely costly, and then most people would stop doing it. It is the certainty of punishment, more than the severity that deters people, so you have to catch as many drinking drivers as possible and severely fine anyone caught.

How about the next time you drive in and see their car gone, you back in and park nose out at the very front of the driveway, blocking their access to their usual parking space? If they honk, make them wait a bit. A shared inconvenience might make it easier to highlight the problem and find a solution.

Another choice might be to ask the landlord to help you create a new dedicated parking space somewhere along the driveway if there is sufficient width.

Well, there is no such thing as painless when it comes to impacted wisdom teeth. So unless all of your son's wisdom teeth have come out most of the way, you can throw all those "painless" recommendations out the window.

Find someone who offers nitrous oxide, which is the cheapest and safest sedative. Your son will float on a hallucinatory cloud during the procedure, but won't be fully out.

This procedure is so common that just about everyone in the area is an expert. If you can find someone who will do it for under $200 per tooth (including sedation, etc) then take it.

Green Boxes?

2012-07-31 01:18 PM

OP here - Thanks for all your comments and information. I called Vector Management as suggested and did further research on my own. These green boxes almost exclusively have anticoagulants in them. They target mice and rats. They do not target gophers and probably do not affect ground swirls. Unfortunately, trapping is generally not affective with mice and rats. The key is to balance rodent control with the safety of other animals somehow. These poison boxes are required by law to be dog proof (or apex predator proof). However, if a dog or other apex predator ingests a mice/rat that has been in the box... well, the other Edhat posts say what happens. Vector Management does not deal with the area I live, but they had some very helpful information for me. I am definitely going to have the boxes moved or even removed - I don't own the property, just rent, so the final say may not be by me. The Vector people suggested I contact the County Agricultural Commissioner if I have problems in this situation.

They may think the 'system' that you just honk is working fine (for them!). I'd let them know it's not just an inconvenience - it's a safety issue. You don't feel safe that if you had some emergency and needed to leave, you would be obstructed. From this angle, you're wondering what your next step is - landlord, cops - what would they most prefer if it happens again? Give them a choice - and then stick to it if it happens again.

The towing company will come and post no parking signs where needed. You can then legally have violating vehicles removed. Most people only need to get towed away once to get the message. Check the stats 297, biggest killer in the US is heart disease. I'll bet you anything they don't just let them die, they do a round or so of open heart surgery first. Last I checked, that wasn't very cheap.

To say that someone attempting to make a conscious effort of enjoying life actively is drag on the economy is ridiculous. Blame those who eat fast food every other day and drink nothing but soda.

I understand what you are trying to say, so make the point for those that choose to poison themselves with food, alcohol, drugs, tobacco, etc. And I don't mean with slightly higher premiums, because we all know that miniscule amount doesn't cover the end result surgery.

I believe that political canvassing is a pretty great expression of democracy. It's not always convenient or comfortable, sure. But when someone comes to my door and tries to engage me on an issue, I'm actually being asked to rise to something approximating the level of this young person's dedication -- and participate in the change I want to see. Canvassers represent the country I want to live in better than anything I see on tv or in the paper. So I don't mind giving them a few minutes of my evening, a few dollars of my income. In fact I look forward to it.

I bet you know more obese couch potatoes than uber athletes, and the long term medical conditions brought upon by that lifestyle probably far outweigh the cost of a hip replacement. Heart attack, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, and joint replacement of hips and knees due to the stress of carrying around all that extra weight. Ask your Dr. which kind of patients s/he sees more of, and which lifestyle costs more in lifetime medical costs....

Great updates.....thanks for the honest reporting....I am always surprised at the amount of medical attention needed by "uber atheletes". The news never covers how much these types cost health insurance providers due to their need for replacement joints, etc. I know one person who has had 3 knees...sure he's an "uber athlete" but should "we" all have to pay for it? His self inflicted injuries increase my health insurance costs? And, the cyclists accident (which I hope he recovers fully from) will cost him so much, and his insurance company, and the costs of fixing the car..etc. Why is this kind of expense not questioned?

It's my opinion that State St should be closed to traffic EVERY weekend and on ALL holidays between Sola and Gutierrez. Sell licenses to merchants / food vendors and use some of that money to hire crossing guards at all cross streets. Give them cool uniforms. But we should definitely stop at allowing open containers, a la Bourbon St in N.O.

Parents, this is YOUR house and these are YOUR kids. Privacy only goes so far in your kid/s room. He wasn't driving at to a high rate of speed. He stopped for most lights. I don't know why it all started first there was a report of a man with a gun. Then a possible 211 armed robbery then something about the guy pointing the gun on his wife, or at a woman. Something about the 76 Station it sounded like the police gave him every oppturnity to give up but he wanted to die. Near the end I couldn't make out what the officer was saying so I got the streets wrong.. Preisker and Hidden Pines. It sounded like he tossed two guns and rammed the police cars..I heard "He threw out two guns, Then he's reving the engine." A few seconds after that "Shots Fired" I don't know if he was a coward based on the suicide by cop. It's hard to say when the guy was mostly obeying all traffic laws he ran acouple lights I think but it sounds like he slowed down. He didn't want to harm anyone else but he wanted to die..He might have had christian beliefs about taking his own life also. Although it's considered "Suicide by Cop" He did not actually pull the trigger on himself. Something unacceptable was going on inside his head and he could not deal with it. Although it's horrible to have to take a life the police were doing their jobs.

There is a desperate need for blood...

2012-07-31 08:29 AM

Thanks, Elder Donor Hero, for all your donations--you are awesome! Thanks too for your encouraging letter here. I've always found the process of donating to be uplifting, life-affirming and positive in every way. There were times in midlife when my iron levels were not high enough, but now I'm back to regular donations. I schedule online and it's easy-peasey when the bloodmobile comes to my burg.

Besides donating, we can encourage friends and family to donate, write a letter to local publications about the experience, and get involved in saving lives. The more donating is discussed, the more it will become a mainstream activity of community involvement.

It would be cool if we could organize Edhat Donation Days three times a year, and have Edhatters step up to help the different communities where we reside. What say, Ed?

Wham, Scam, Thank You Ma'm!

2012-07-31 08:20 AM

As a real estate agent handling rentals, I find Craigslist "housing" a surreal experience. I would NEVER put a vacant house for rent on Craigslist, and all agents have been warned about the scams. As a matter of course, I only use the local MLS to advertise homes. Recently I heard of a case of a big house in San Roque for rent in Craigs for a ridiculous amount, and the crooks were using the dead former owner's name in their email address!

Wham, Scam, Thank You Ma'm!

2012-07-31 08:19 AM

The huge downside of our technologically savvy society. You couldn't get your name out of the system if you tried.

A while back, I received a bunch of return to sender mail with fraudulent money orders. The scammer had used my credit card to charge 750 dollars worth of fedex shipments full of these money orders after opening an account in my name. They then sent these all over the place, and the ones that returned were decomissioned or half demolished buildings in New York, Detroit, etc. Judging by the large quantity charged to the credit card, the 6 or so fedex envelopes I received as return to sender were probably a small portion of what was actually sent.

I took them to the bank and they were happy to receive them. Not sure if they would be interested in this type of matter, though.

How about if someone is convicted of a crime, they lose all of their taxpayer funded benefits? And if under 18, or still living at home, so do mommy and daddy. I bet if junior was putting the subsidized rent, food stamps, etc. at risk, his parents might be a little more concerned. These low lifes couldn't afford to live here if we stopped paying all of their bills for them.

@205 I think yours is the best comment. I believe if the fines and punishment were severe enough and ENFORCED, it would definitely be a DETERRENT! Then, if carried out properly, it could take up weekend time that they would otherwise use to tag and vandalize etc. I can just tell by the looks of this guy that he's a future gangsta, and who knows where his parents are. For all we know they could be gangsters too. It's really a shame that people spend their energies in this way. Life is so short and we can make it so much better by choosing happiness and peace instead of all this negativity people create for themselves.

The only "sad" thing about this, is that this coward forced a cop (s) to have to pull their guns out and kill him- Those officers will have to live with that the rest of their lives. This selfish coward has no sympathy from me. He risked innocent lives when he made his decision to run and recklessly drive through SM at a high rate of speed with guns out.

Interesting that the accountant who reported the problem was from the same office as the accounting firm overseeing LHCDC. How come they missed all the red flags on that one? LHCDC has cost the county and the city of Lompoc millions in losses and nothing has been done.

Roger, WOW. I think you have more than a story about the incident here. The compelling manner in which you followed it and the responses thus far and those certainly to come may paint a sociologically relevant portrait of what's going on both within the incident and without. there is a story within a story and humbly I would suggest maybe you have an opportunity here. On the one hand incidents like these have become so commonplace as to be mundane but the up close and personal, visceral manner in which you report it, even though from a distance incited a host of differing emotions. I don't know what you do with it but I really think there is more here and that this story isn't over. thanks again for the voodoo you do so well!

I think it is a great service. I haven't used it but did call them a couple of years ago about being overrun with rodents; one of the workers came and offered to place rodenticide but I was unwilling to have poison. That we don't have mosquitoes despite the presence of the Carpenteria marsh and often sluggish creeks is probably due to their efforts.

VRBO scam occurred a couple weeks ago to friends of a friend. They live out of state and rented a nice looking house and sent their deposit. The "owner" asked for the rest of the deposit to be sent out of the country. The friend, who lives here, drove by the house address but it differed from the photos on VRBO. They did not send the money and found another house, but they did loose their initial deposit.

Wham, Scam, Thank You Ma'm!

2012-07-31 07:02 AM

Had similar experience looking for an out-of-state rental for a family member. The real owner's name was on the listing, but no contact other than a Yahoo e-mail address. I went to Google street view, saw a For Sale sign on the property; didn't know how old that was so called the realty company named on the For Sale sign. Turned out the owner was the realtor who had no idea the home was listed for rent on craigslist (it was no longer for sale). Called him; he was alarmed and the last I heard was going to take it up with craigslist and Yahoo.....

As the lady says, if it's too good to be true... but in this case the listing I'm talking about didn't seem out of line with others in that location.

Interesting to know about the Zillow connection.

The minimum sentence for graffiti and tagging should be $5,000 fine (1st offense, doubled and tripled next time they're caught) and 2,000 hours of community service. Since they love to paint that could be painting fences, walls, low income folk's houses, and removing graffiti. 2,000 hours would take away over two years worth of their weekends (8 hours Saturday, 8 hours Sunday).

Wham, Scam, Thank You Ma'm!

2012-07-31 06:26 AM

There also now seems to be a relationship between Zillow and Craigslist. With just a couple of clicks your Zillow listing can be featured on Craigslist! My Daughter and Son-in-law recently bought a house in SB and the interior shots were posted on Zillow. Even thoughh the house had been sold and it was indicated as such, the interior shots remained. One day, when I was checking Zillow, I noticed that the house was "for rent" at a very low monthly price. The listing was provided by someone out of state. The same day, several people came to the house and said that they saw the listing on Craigslist. My Daughter put a sign on the door to indicate that the house was not for rent and that it was a scam. She contacted Zillow and reported the listing as fraud and it immediately came off their site and Craigslist as well. I am hoping that Zillow has done something to track down this "lister".
