I always call Rose Cab when I need a ride home from the airport. Ignore those scammers in the taxi line. When you call Rose and give your pick up and destination locations they will be able to tell you the approximate fare. Airport to turnpike area was ~$20.

Cat Conundrum |

OP here: One clarification: we spend three months in France, then three months in S.B., etc., so the cats are only alone for three months at a time. I know there is no simple solution to this problem, but thank you for all your suggestions. I can't find the heart to lock the cats in, especially the once wild cat, and I worry too much about collars when we are away and can't make sure they stay on (and come off when necessary). Plus the wild cat would be impossible to collar. Let's hope Ray, the neighbor tom, becomes more civilized. He's not a bad cat, just lonely.

This is a sad event. Whether one is "doing something they love" or not at the time of death, or the fact that "we all die sometime" notwithstanding, and whether Santa Barbara uses a coroner or a pathologist (really? this point had to be made?), the family and loved ones of this person are grieving and mourning their loss. The lack of sensitivity on this site is, at times, staggering.

And the MUCH preferred method to feed the birds is to put the fish in a tub of water so the birds NOT get acclimated to getting food from people. I hope that's what they are doing at the SB Wildlife. Is it, 687? Good for you, no, great for you for being so respectful of the bird's space! And a small boo to the ranger for getting so close that the young one flew away.

Cabs cost more here than any other city ( I travel a lot). $8 a mile is about what it costs in SB while its closer to $5 in most cities... in fact its cheaper in NYC, SF, Chicago, Seattle, LA and other big cities than it is here in SB. I know gas is more expensive here but its ridiculous how much a cab ride costs. Anyone know why we have so many cab companies?

They are a fun bird also. If you are really taken with them, call the Santa Barbara Wildlife 681-1080. They always need volunteers to help feed the pelicans. You have to throw it to them. It's sort of like throwing to your grandkids, easy and underhand, and they don't throw it back!

$70 from the airport to San Roque? That is a joke! I would of called the owner and complained. You know, there is a taxi licensing department (of some sort) in the City of SB. At least there was 10 years ago. I had an altercation with one of the cab drivers and I called the city who directed me to the right department. The guy I spoke to said that this particular driver had a lot of complaints. He is no longer taking fares in SB.

I totally got taken on a ride the other week. The cab driver charged me twice as much as it usually does to go home. When I refused to pay that much he said he would call the cops. I told him go ahead and call as I knew the fare was too high. When the cops got there they made me pay the fare cause they said I had been drinking and the driver was sober. What BS. I am totally paranoid now about which cabs I take.

I agree. People have different preferences and age may not define them. While "only" in my late 50's, I think I would be bored by a piano bar - although anywhere there's really superlative music happening, people would probably have fun. It depends on the person what they're going to enjoy most! My taste is indie and post-rock. I may be just getting a little ...sensitive.. to making age assumptions. lol.

Maybe grafitti artists should have to take care of the homeless. Think of all the money that could be saved from not having to clean up grafitti that could be used to feed and house the homeless. It's not just the clean up costs, but preventative costs as well. I saw a city worker moving signs one day and stopped to ask. He was going around and re-installing signs higher on the post to make it harder to reach. Think of what we pay that guy just to move existing signs. What a waste.

and in other news, Yosemite National Park is closed to all visitors due to food storage violations by visitors which encouraged bears to raid campsites and vehicles for food. Highway 101 and 154 are now closed to all vehicle traffic due to too many accidents and littering violations. Water drinking in North Dakota has been terminated due to fracking pollution. Sex anywhere has been banned due to overpopulation. I think I'm ready to move overseas and take my chances.

TV and Internet Wiring Replacement |

Bad cable usually means a type called RG59. The current standard for a reliable signal is a thicker cable called RG6 Solid Copper Center Conductor. If you really want to go first class - look at RG11. For phone or DSL - the wire in most 30 y/o house is Cat (Category) 3 three pair. The current standard for internet cabling is Cat 5e or better yet, Cat 6. In either case, when it comes to a rewire project - it ain't as easy is as it sounds. Take using the old wire to pull in a new one. If the original wiring was installed when the house was built - then code would have required that it be stapled to the inside of the wall studs at certain intervals. In other words - you can pull on it all you want and it's not moving - unless it snaps in half - which it does. You want a specialist in replacement rewire - look to a good Electrician - licensed and bonded please.

582 - great question. I know these guys are gang affiliates. My guess is that they earn notoriety with fellow gang members if they are able to graffiti in unusual locations. It's just something to gloat about. It's possible that someone from the rival gang owns a house up there... but I doubt it. Not all taggers are gang members but some are... the actual tags themselves would clue us in to which side and what they were trying to express, but no need to give them more notoriety by posting the photos online.

Modoc Road on the Westside got tagged heavily by some gangbangers on Saturday night. They really went after all the utility boxes and also the wall at the entrance to Pilgrim Terrace. When they start moving into the neighborhoods I try to clean that stuff the next morning- they've done the sidewalk in front of my house and a utility box near my corner. Most of what I've cleaned up has just been by taggers but this recent stuff looks like someone claiming territory. Seems a little more serious to me.

How about going to the the Wildcat to dance or taking a long cozy beach walk along East Beach on a warm summer night. Why does someone always have to put down the people trying to help improve the helicopter situations. Things have improved at Cottage because of the caring neighbors that are working on it. How does this come into a thread where someone has died? I'm so sorry for the loss of a life. Save your post for some where else, not on the thread of the loss of a life. Prayers to those involved.

"But, the city received two unsolicited requests from community members to name the terminal after people who made significant contributions to Santa Barbara's history." So, if two people can attempt to change the name of our airport, while the majority of people don't want to change it... just who/whom is our City Counsel representing: Us, or Them? Oh that's right, the "Them" represent the 1% so to hell with the rest of us.

I sure was glad to help out Caltrans as I didn't have to travel through this area. When I went to Atascadero on Saturday I took the 154 and promptly got stuck behind a Ralph's food truck that refused to use the turnouts to let the people behind him get by. Other than that, the 154 moved smoothly.

Some people keep commenting as if public funds were being used for this project. Get it straight--nothing to do with public funds. Completely privately funded. Arts patrons paying big money to fix it up. Fans invited to donate to the effort. Getting rid of the thing is another topic altogether. I've always thought it was tacky, too. Bauhaus was daring and radical in 1925, but not in 1991. The arch might look okay in a sculpture garden at a modern art museum, but I don't think the style is appropriate for public art between a Spanish-style former-railroad-roundhouse hotel wing and a baseball diamond right across from the beach in this city. It just looks silly, out of place in that spot, in my opinion. Why by the ocean? There isn't really even a "public space" there, practically speaking--I mean a place where people hang out and eat their lunches, etc--except for the homeless people who congregated at the ball field until it was fenced to keep them out. It looks more like a monument of some kind than public art in that location.

Stop the hysteria, renaming the terminal does not rename the airport. It will remain SBA or Santa Barbara Airport do you call LAX the Tom Bradley International Terminal?. While I don't care if they rename it or not I can't get over all the fuss people make over this without actually thinking thru what they read.. KEYT is to blame to a certain extent since they originally reported this back as renaming the airport but still what does it take to get this thru peoples heads. THEY ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT RENAMING THE AIRPORT, JUST THE TERMINAL.

@248P - This is 233. We live in a representative democracy, so not everything can be put to a full public vote. And besides, look how low our turnout is for elections as it is. My comment about the community "allowing" something other than Spanish architecture is based on how droll and uninspiring the architecture here has become. Any project with controversial or abstract architectural themes has been prohibited in the downtown area. To me, this represents the side of SB that plays right into the "newly wed or nearly dead" thing people say about SB. I would much rather have a thriving, progressive community with interesting, less formulaic architecture and public art.

Why not just get rid of the cat door and keep your cats inside? This will keep them safe from the Tom cat as well as other animals. I also wonder why you do not bring your cats to SB with you. Many people travel the world with their pets. Cats are very smart and will adapt to living in two places just like you do. This is much easier of course if you have them inside all the time. It would probably be less expensive than paying for a house sitter or someone to feed them while you are away.

Roger nails it again! Keep in mind; -The injured party didn't ask for a helicopter, dont blame them. The dispatcher and first responders decide who gets transported in what way. - Hikers are no different than people in town on a sidewalk. No outrage over them getting taxpayer benefits if hit by a car or .... (even when stupid). These aren't mountain men who live back there and pay no taxes and contribute nothing to society. The use of resources should always be evaluated and questioned. The time and place for that is not when someone is sick/injured and waiting. Before someone assumes I work for cottage or own a helicopter gas station understand that I am all for an audit of the use of the helicopter but lets not blame the victims. (and remember with HIPAA laws the audit wont be public fodder)

Very interesting read, thanks for linking it here on edhat. Very easy to understand why this organization feels attacked and it would be a shame for Santa Barbara to lose this program. The comments re: family planning are insulting and offensive. Please dont take this as "pious scolding" I also believe reproducing is a choice and expensive. I guarantee those homeless families also know that, and that is what makes it insulting. The insinuation that education and birth control is what they needed to prevent them from having children they cant support is offensive and mean. From this article, clearly most of these families were in very different circumstances when that choice was made. Very few people in this country aren't an illness, injury, or other disaster away from finding the TH their best option.

If anyone knows who any of the actors are, let us know and we'll include that too. It's a very entertaining and clever video. And we know the house, although we don't know Mark. Great house, great story. That was Montecito "back in the day" - so glad to hear Mark's mom is still enjoying the home she put so much of her own blood, sweat and tears into!

Sounds to me like you need a rota of trusty volunteer tenants to teach that tom where to poop and give lots of love to all three kitties and drink some nice Provencal wine and eat a little goat cheese during the breaks in the action. And you have come to the right place--edhat! I'm sure we can find volunteers to help out. Seriously, the tom has adopted your house if not you personally--it's a fait accompli, unless you can find a new home for him. Does seem you need someone in the house all the time until he learns where it's okay to leave his "deposits."

I question the ~38 years old for Internet/tv wiring. Of course being Cox it is probably coax cable so that would make some sense but if it is UTP (unsheilded twisted pair) used for Ethernet wiring (cat 3 to cat 6) then I have my doubts. If it is regular phone UTP then that would make sense, that stuff has been around for over a hundred years. However, why would company use that stuff for Internet/tv?

Those are such beautiful cats! It does sound like the automated cat door is the way to go. The poop in the living room sounds like the tom is trying to establish territory in your house. Some cats are aggressive like that, but I gather this tom didn't do this when he had his own home with a person, right? So, what does the tom cat do now? Does he have an actual new home with people, or is he living alone in an empty house? Because that sounds like a separate problem which, if solved, might cause him to stop coming into your house looking for community/territory.

An electrician can do this, or you can, and many computer network people in town do this too. I'm not sure if you're talking about replacing coax cable (the kind that brings cable tv & internet to you house and has F connectors - a center wire with a metal ring that you push or screw to tighten) or network cable that has a connector like a phone plug except with 6 instead of 4 wires (RJ 45). Cat 6 is current, and there is shielded cable and unshielded. If you already have phone cable, you can pull either coax or network cable through the wall from the crawlspace and connect them in a modular coverplate with the phone wire. Most new construction has these installed in walls before sheetrock. Network cable is a little fragile - very small wires that can break if the cable is bent or crimped, and I haven't found an electrician who knows this - I've had to pull new cable or cut holes in drywall to fix. I'd probably call computer repair people and ask for a referral if they don't do it themselves. Also, SBCC teaches network cabling (I took these classes) and they might have a good referral. Hey, I'm a girl, this is relevant?

Transition House is also part of Homeless Inc, for those who claim this city is not doing enough. Learn how much this city has been doing before being so quick to scold and judge. The bad Homeless Inc programs are dragging down the ones that actually can be productive. So Transition House should reasonably feel defensive, but they need to help target the more nefarious abusers who also are part of Homeless Inc instead of guilt tripping this city who has been overly generous for far too long. I am sure TH is feeling the secondary brunt of the Casa Esperanza and New Beginnings abuses.

I always rub on some mugwort before hiking. Very convenient at rattlesnake canyon since it is right at the entrance to the trails. May not be full proof, but have heard the Chumash used it for prevention. Only time I ever got poison oak was when I was younger and inadvertently grabbed a plant and pulled it out. This was only to say to myself "this looks a lot like poison oak" with the entire plant in my bare hands. Not a fun time.

Keep in mind that the issue is technical and always needs to be meaured. When someone says "it works just fine", that's not a meaurement. 10Mb peer second is a meaurement. Also, the Internet travels through coax cable and the signal degrades through length from the source, poor cable and from other users (your neighbors tapping into it). Combine length from telephone pole, bad cable and many users and you're in trouble. Also, Cox is aware of their own modem problems right now, with about 20% in the field either broken or breaking. If a tech was at your house, he tested it so you're okay.

Lots of opinions offered in respose to an apparently erroneous story. The Indy in May said they were going for $30K to restore and $20K for future working funding. $50K total. News-Press story is not available to the unwashed, but if they already have $48K then they are doing pretty well according to their goals. If they found people willing to plunk down almost $50k then they have a lot of supporters. Score one for the pro-rainbow crowd!

Cox told me that on a rental property, they said I needed to replace all of the lines. It turns out there was one connection to one outlet that I had rewired and it fixed the problem throughout that unit. The Cox guys told me I had to rewire every unit to get internet, dvr's etc but a majority of the other units already had that service and it works just fine. The line that needed to be replaced had a electrical surge after a SCE problem and the tenant had spliced lines with connecters himself and that fried. Beyond that all the other 30 year old cable is doing the job just fine with people using all the cox services on the property. I do agree with other posters though if you do change it out upgrade phone and cable maybe do ethernet wiring as well.

The "old" wire is the reason I can't connect my phone upstairs at the same time as the internet. I just use an extension phone for the upstairs, but I should rewire the place. I did it myself at my old house, with the help of a friend. And, I'm a girl!!!! It's like Becky says.... attach the new wire to the old wire and pull it through.....

1. The technician is correct. The older wiring can't deliver as good a signal as the newer wiring. That's the problem at my parents house and I've been trying to get them to replace their wiring for 5+ years. 2. A competent electrician can replace multiple kinds of wiring, and you might consider having both TV & telephone wires replaced at the same time, so that you have current wiring to take advantage of either cable internet access or phone line (DSL) internet access. 3. Replacing existing cables with newer cables is faster and cheaper than running all new lines, as they use the existing lines to pull the new lines through the walls to the existing outlets. If you need new outlet locations, an electrician can do it cleanest, though there still may be some drywall patching involved. 4. There is/was a guy in SB who claimed to be a cable specialist. I used him a few times, but quit when he put a big hole in my drywall that he told me afterwards I'd have to patch, put a hole in my ceiling (that he neglected to mention, and didn't offer to fix), and billed me for more than double his estimate. Go with a licensed electrical contractor to avoid these kinds of surprises.

We had the same problem and solved it by getting a SureFlap cat door. (I'm sure there's other brands) It is a cat door that is activated by your cats micro-chip (no need for a collar) which means it only opens for your cat and keeps anyone else out. It is one of the best things we've ever bought. I love it and highly recommend it to solve your problem. (We got our cat at the shelter and it already came with a chip and if your cats don't have one then this would obviously need to be done - totally worth it)

TV and "internet" wiring? If you just mean your single coax cable used for both TV and cable internet, then this is very easy to replace and run through your attic or crawlspace. Anyone with half a brain can do it. If you're also trying to run ethernet cable then you will want someone with more experience.

We had a raccoon come into our house through the cat door one night - what a mess! We now have a cat door that can be switched to locked, open, in-only, out-only and requires a magnet on the cat collar. Our cats get chased to the cat door by a big neighborhood tomcat all the time, but he doesn't have a magnet collar so can't get in (I think it would be very hard for another animal to piggy back in). The only scenario this wouldn't work for is if a neighbor cat also has a magnet on the collar and tries to get in. I agree that this arrangement does require some oversight, but a few times a week should be sufficient (sometimes we find odd pieces of metal, screws, etc stuck to the cats' magnets).

I've had a similar problem with a neighboring cat actually chasing my cats into the house. He was a real bully. We installed a magnetic cat door. If the Tom gets in, he is not trapped, unless you set the door so your cats can't get out either. A few times of strongly discouraging the Tom should take care of the problem. I stomped my feet & clapped my hands & shouted at the bully when he came in & eventually he gave up coming in.

405's comment is significant. Is anyone doing any analysis of these helicopter recues, identifying the need, the costs (and whether they are being reimbursed) and how much is being paid by County Fire? County departments seem to have an unlimited budget for toys and then "need" to use them to keep them operational, yet they come crying for more money at budget time. Where is the accountability and oversight, especially here on the south coast - we don' t hear of helicopter rescues bringing people to Marian Medical Center. Farr, Wolf, Carbajal and your taxpayer-supported staffs, please look into this and report back to the taxpayers!

Who pays for all these helicopter evacuations after people make extremely poor personal decisions that put themselves in harms way? One could also suspect they probably did not carry their own personal health insurance that included emergency evacuations clauses, but I don't know this for a fact. Report here than helicopter evacuations have tripled since Cottage opened its helipad in the middle of a residential area and emergency dispatchers are now calling for them with every distress call. Follow the money. Cottage needs an internal audit on this new activity. Taxpayers need to know who is picking up the bills, what exactly these helicopter evacuations cost, their impact on emergency room resources, and what exactly is the ratio of true emergency and questionable non-emergency calls, based upon objective criteria. Is being stupid and indulging in extreme sports an "emergency" taxpayers should be subsidizing?

I think that the 'kittens' comment was just an observation that most find kittens to be considered "cute" by default simply because of their tender age and active antics, while more mature cats are often overlooked for their less flashy but subtly charming ways. Cat people know that cute is never defined by age, but by personality and by the feline ability to encompass us inept humans in their fascinating lives.

I am a physician at a large, south county emergency department and can say that I too agree that we are seeing entirely too much use of the County Fire Helicopter for illnesses and injuries that do not meet the need for such services. If poor assessment by the helicopter crew leads them to insist on air transport, the policy is to land at the airport and transport by ground. Rooftop landings are for critical life threating injuries/illnesses. This had become nothing more than a PR event for County Fire

I'm not a fan of the sculpture either, but I agree completely with the post that says public art can't be put to a public vote. Voters can express their unhappiness to the Commission or Board that approved this-- or to the City Council which has the power to do something if there are enough complaints. Have any of you opponents done anything other than rant on Edhat? My idea of horrible public art are the multi-colored windmill-type cones at Goleta beach. I believe they are called kinetic sculptures. What could be worse than trying to improve the view of a beach and an ocean with whirling mechanical devices? However, I really can accept the fact that some people, maybe a majority, like them.

They do a wonderful job - I've visited their facilities. Does anyone know if they ever got air conditioning? Some of those rooms had tiny windows and no cross-ventilation...

Yes, there is a touch of dissention here. However, there are many animal lovers in this town who will take this situation seriously and their concern will naturally be for the abandoned. Cats are indeed independent creatures and do survive well. Whereas dogs need people, hearth and home. These particular animals are gorgeous and I am sure someone will be happy to stay with them. Good luck.
