I have no problem with a 99 cent store in Santa Barbara just not on the main drag. This store would be more appropriately located in a shopping center such as 5 points, Magnolia or Camino Real real. Places with actual parking lots. Remember this is a tourist town. I don't want to go to Carmel and see a 99 cent store among the shops and restaurants. Keep the crap off main st...

My favorite Mom lunch story: we went to Paradise Cafe, seated outside. I forget what I ordered, but her roasted eggplant sandwich looked delicious. When she went to cut into it, a large piece of eggplant jumped out onto the ground. We both looked at it on the floor, glanced at each other, then back down at the food on the floor. She slyly reached down, picked it up, put it back on her plate and commenced to eat, no comment. Yea, verily, it was good. Sure wish I could have lunch with Mom again!

Oh Yes, the paper bag! I have 1-2 in the house at all times. Roll the top down to keep them sturdier (I know you know this). A stick/rod toy, no feathers needed, under a sheet of newspaper or the paper bag has always been the the easiest, cheapest and most popular toy, as long as it has a human on the other end. Boxes with entrance holes cut into them for rest breaks (the cartons that office copy paper comes in. Great cat beds). And I learned not to miss the trash basket with Q-tips. Aw heck, just give the Q-Tips to your cat. :-)

Escalera tented my house, then one of their installers walked on the aluminum porch roof while it was covered by the tent and fell through it. They CLAIMED the hole in the panels (CLEARLY showing a print of a tennis sneaker) was "water damage" because it rained while the tent was on the house, and they went round and round with my insurance company for months. My photos of the damage and foot print eventually settled it. It was an unpleasant experience.

032 here. I never said it doesn't deserve coverage; it does. It does not deserve the amount and type of coverage it's getting. Are these victims more important than the other Americans that woke up yesterday morning but were killed due to malice or the otherwise antisocial behavior of others before they made it back to their beds? I'm simply noting the discrepancy in public concern, and what that shows about individual attitudes. Big single events like the Aurora shooting capture people's attention better than the more alarming totality of less impactful events that don't get reported as extensively. That is scary, because collective values drives public policy. I'd rather invest our resources in reducing drunk driving or domestic violence than stopping mass murders.

Easy peasy, 105, here's the solution. Outlaw the materials that make 2012 apartment bombs. Only lawful devices that our For Father's possessed (at the time the 2nd Amendment was adopted) can be owned by Americans. Or is outlawing the materials to make apartment bombs crimping our civil liberties? I'm serious, clue me in.....

300066: I did not increase the saturation. I generally do not like photos that have had the saturation increased; they look fake to me. This one, I took with my Canon G12 which produced both RAW and Jpegs. This was from the RAW. I used the Levels adjustment in Photoshop -- and then looking at it more closely it seemed to me much too blue from what I remembered, so I boosted a little (about 20 on the scale, I think) the orange/warming filter (Image>Adjustments>PhotoFilter) and that took care of the heavy blue overtone. Except for a pass through sharpening, nothing else. Oddly, nothing was needed for the other that was from the same general place, except by the water, 20 minutes later. Glad you liked it; it was a beautiful, sultry evening. ---Betsy

Uh-huh. With the middle class on its way out, these cut-rate stores are becoming the new normal. How many American made goods will they carry? Merchants don't create jobs, consumer demand creates jobs. Reduced demand, reduced price/quality market goods; demand won't support more. If we made our own stuff, of good quality, we wouldn't have to buy as often (it would last longer) and we could afford more. You know, like we did for over 200 yrs after we shed English corporate monopolies...

My great grandparents settled in Montecito circa 1900. My sons are fifth-generation residents from the Miramar neighborhood so some of us knew the Gawzners and/or Mr. Grover Cleveland Barnes. There was more to all of this than Jacques. And he was doing what his boss wanted him to do. But one time when I attended some thing at the Convention Center he was at the door and he was a totally different person. I say at least one prayer a day for being so fortunate to live in this Miramar Beach neighborhood.

Still no names. Cleo or Chloe might work for the b&w girl. I talked to my friends today and they will be in town a week from tomorrow. So one more week with three kittens. I've noticed the one that is leaving is the most independent of the three. While the two of mine seem to play and sleep together more. Still, it will be hard to let her go. . . At the same time I remember the special bond that I had with Bob. I think part of that came from him leaving the litter before he was weaned. I want to bond with my two and have the other one bond with her new humans. I think it will all work out. And as Moonwillow said, nothing better than a kitty pile.

I've got an idea that will solve the mass murder phenomenon AND secure the 2nd Amendment rights to all citizens. Think about it. When the 2nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution was written, what kind of weapons did our Founding Fathers have in mind? That's right, a musket. Or a Bowie knife. OK, let's allow today's Americans only the weapons our founding fathers used. A musket. A knife. Can you imagine what would have happened if some wacko went into a theater today and shot his musket at the audience? By the time he tried to reload, he would have been restrained by 30 theater goers. Let's get back to our roots as a country. Arm all citizens with muskets, and only muskets! We could end mass murders in a day! Going through security at airports would be a breeze, 'cuz muskets would so easily stand out. Next problem please.

What do small condos need to budget and manage? 1. Insurance 2. Gardening 3. Water/garbage 4. Major maintenance - painting, roofs, landscaping, pavings, security 5. Common area electricity and plumbing Each owner should print out and memorize the Calif Civil Code Davis-Sterling Act for common interest developments. Make sure you know what you as an owner is responsible for and what remains the common area concerns of the homeowners association. And understand especially what is exclusive-use common area, which is each individual owners responsibility to manage and repair. Plus your CC&R's and association by-laws need to be followed too. You can avoid 99% of all condo problems with a little preparation and homework.

US law and military tradition reserve usage of term "half-mast" to refer to ships and other ocean-going vessels. The term "half-staff" is what is used when on land. This makes sense, as no one calls a flag pole a mast. Otherwise, wouldn't it be "Flagmast, Arizona?" Also: gun-control is a no-brainer.

Oh, man. How I miss that raft. My dog and I used to swim out there. We met the nicest people, while sitting offshore, bobbing around in the clear waters and looking for fishies. Jacques was a real piece of work. I had some older friends, a group of German ladies. He used to fall all over them, dishing out the Euro schmooze. I well remember him "escorting" me (a guest) off the boardwalk, on a 100-degree day, all because my Redbone hound was lounging on the sand, under the floorboards. What a meanie. The actor shown here doesn't do justice to Jacques' tan and robust buffness. The red speedo. Who can forget that? He was a true oddball, but I respected his work ethic.

You need a close-up to see the difference between a flying ant and termite. Google the differences; thorax and antennae. If you get a contractor, they can poke around under the house and floorboads, for example, spot-check and exterminate in specific places, instead of poisoning everywhere or tenting, unless you really have termites everywhere.

Measures to secure movie theaters are silly because this was a unique event and a unique and unusually deranged person. No, what was common about this tragedy was not that it happened in a movie theater, but that a deranged person was able to readily buy lethal guns and over 6,000 rounds. The founding fathers did not have this in mind when they wrote "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, ...". The reason that the meaning of the 2nd amendment has been so perverted is because there is massive amounts of moolah in the gun industry, which owns the NRA lock, stock, and barrel.

The problem isn't with them. Not is the problem with termite feces. The problem is with the termites that are busy throughout the structure with consuming it.

@989, the problem with that approach is that over time the public cares less and less about protecting natural resources to which they have no connection. Fewer people will care about snowy plovers or beach dunes, and political pressure will swing to opening up the entire beach to anything goes. Successful restoration efforts involve interpretation and education to build and maintain that public support and connection to the resources.

This is a sad event, just as any unnecessary death is, but the media and politicians (including Obama and Romney) are exploiting it. Not to be callous, but how many other people died yesterday that shouldn't have? A whole lot more than 12, and they only get a passing mention in local news. This is a tragedy for that town to be sure, but it does not merit the attention it is getting. I don't recall there being as much media coverage of the South Asia tsunami in 2004, in which well over 200,000 people were killed. Unfortunately, owners of most media outlets are only interested in making money, not contributing to the community. And even more sadly, the heart of the problem is that this sort of "sexy" news is what captures the community's attention.

Some homeless go up and down the coast as 'tourists'. The yoaches on State are all from the Northwest. They're checking out, doing their grunge thang. The ARC in Carp used to be a stopping point for vagrant tourism, as did the Fig Tree here. That's totally different than Sacramento's policy of giving homeless one-way tickets to here and Santa Monica. No doubt some homeless tourists take advantage of those policies to get to their next destination.

Before anyone makes statements about the "poverty" line and any other string of pseudo-alarmist claims, how about some facts. Even those the census found in "poverty" had several televisions, A/C and indoor plumbing. The dollar value of "poverty" benefits was calculated out to be approximately the equivalent of making $40,000 a year - with food stamps, section 8 housing, MediCal benefits etc. 90% of Americans are in the middle class - 10% fall into poverty or upper class. The middle class remains very large and very comfortable. It is all relative and even the "poor" are relatively very well off in the US. Drug addicts, drunks and professional vagrants like to con you otherwise. You cannot have unemployment and illegal immigration at the same time. Because many citizens refuse to work or live within their means does not mean they are falling into "poverty". It just means they are lazy with a false sense of entitlement.

Cottage hospital does internal reviews on all hospital operations for efficacy. They need to do an internal review on the criteria used for helicopter evacuations, just like they review everything else. Or else they may hear from hospital accreditation, if this has become an over-used and abusive internal decision malfunction. Controlling medical costs is everyone's business, including Cottage and the medical evacuation business.

993-- I don't think you have ever been to a 99 Cent Only Store. There is nothing that is over 99.99 cents. Somethings are 2 or 3 for 99.99 cents. Other "Dollar Stores" may have a different policy. I always laugh about the first time I went to one. I asked the friend who had bribed me into driving her to Oxnard how much something was. Her answer, "You don't get the concept, do you? Ok, so it's easy to leave through the side exit doors. Doesn't an alarm go off it's between the time the last viewer exits the theater and when the next film ends? That seems so easy to set up considering a cleaning crew always enters as patrons leave, even if for a few minutes. A crew member could easily do a re-set on the door or alert the projection booth that people are all out & it's time to flip the switch. Easy-peasy, it seems

YAY!!! kitty pics. can we have a weekly "feature"? a cyber friend of mine's cat took up with her spatula which he would drag from the pitcher on the counter to his bed. once he took the whisk, and once a cheese grater, but he was obsessed with the spatula. so she gave up, drew a smiley face on it, and gave it to him. if you type "katrina kittle's cat joey" into google images you'll see some really cute pictures of him.

So true! Popular items when my cats were kittens included Q-tips (which we'd find tucked under area rugs), the bathtub plug, party blowers and pens. My favorite was when I noticed my kittens playing with little red balls...except they didn't have any little red balls. Turned out that unbeknownst to me, they'd gotten big enough to jump on the kitchen counter and were batting around some just-picked cherry tomatoes they'd knocked to the floor. Glad you're having fun, Dan!

@989 - That is absolutely not true. If they are seeing termites that easily it most likely means they have a heavy enough infestation that spot treating would not be effective. Also, I'm surprised to be hearing so many good things about Lenz. Usually I only hear negative reviews. Most of their technicians were fired from other local pest control companies.

What is unemployed? Who gets counted? Who gets ignored? Is a technical job requiring a college degree equivilent to a retail job? Does anyone actually ever have or lose a job and get a phone call asking them if they're unemployed? Who does the counting? Statistics like the unemployment rate predictively ignore those who really want work. It ignores taxes generated by One $100k executive vs. Five $20k clerks. It ignores full time vs. part time equivelents. It is a fake number.

Looks like everyone has this covered. A tenant of mine was bombarded by the flying (subterranian) variety and I was out of town so I let Lenz take care of it for $485. (They drilled holes in the tile floor and shot fumes down there.) Then I found out that these guys swarm for one day, drop wings, find mates, and move on. Wasted money. A night in a motel for the tenant would have been cheaper. The other kind, the little pellets of feces can be dealt with by spot-treating. You don't have to tent the whole house. They've found a comfortable home in your rafters, so you need to treat the wood. Good luck.

$.99 cent stores are great but 99% of the goods cost more than $.99 cents. It's a sign of the times. 99% of shoppers are those who pinch pennies. More stores demosnstrate more people falling down the income ladder. 99% of customers make less than $99k or more per year. 99% of the people employed won't need a college degree to get the job. Claiming a store creates 50 low paying jobs ignores the lost business 99% of the cometition will suffer and the 99 jobs lost.

Funny to hear people complain about the many being punished for the acts of the few. Welcome to the real world. With no budget to investigate and go after the few rotten apples the only to protect the natural beauty is to keep everyone away. "Public" doesn't mean YOU own it, it means others as well future generations also get the priviledge to enjoy it, not just you. This reminds me of folks who trash their neighbourhood then complain it's so dirty but when it comes to taking responsibility everyone's claiming someone else did it.

Termites? |
2012-07-21 08:44 AM |
|
The termites that swarm and fly are subterranean termites, different ones from the dry wood termites that leave the fecal pellets. They are treated differently. Dry wood termites live in the wood, the others live underground, as you'd imagine from their name. Lenz has been good in my (limited) experience, but they are likely to advise tenting the whole house. Chemicals that they use in tenting for termites now do not last as long as in the past (toxicity to humans, etc), but it doesn't cost any less as a result of that.... Tenting is usually what is advised, rather than spot treating (injecting poisons into wood or other areas). Tenting is quite expensive and quite a hassle for the homeowner as well, and sometimes I think the exterminators advise it when spot treating would be fine. I know that some exterminators have begun using heat, but I don't know if those in our area have done so. The concept is interesting, heating the whole place so that inside wall spaces, etc are hot enough to kill anything living there. (Also expensive, I hear.) That was developed for bedbugs, notoriously hard to get rid of, but it works for termites....

You go, Tracy! We stopped at the Oxnard store last night and picked up three baskets of beautiful raspberries, three of blackberries, a container of mixed gourmet salad greens and three bags of the very good Joseph's sugar free cookies. Each item only 99.99 Cents. They changed the pricing a couple of years ago. Don't knock it until you've tried it. I'm just hoping they can keep the bathrooms graffiti clear. That's a problem in Oxnard and Ventura -- not so much in Camarrillo.

Reports of a three-fold increase in helicopter flights since Cottage helipad opened. Dispatchers now claiming every emergency call needs a helicopter evacuation? Follow the money. Cottage claimed no more than 2 flights a week would be expected. They based this on past expectations Something radically happened since Cottage made those reassuring statements to the public? And this does not necessarily mean an unexpected increase in emergency needs. Greed is as good an explanation as anything. Helicopter evacuations get paid only when they get used. Did Cottage lie or did they mis-underestimate.

Trenwiths, Lou Rose, etc, were uptown stores (Lou and Jack Rose stores by the Arlington). Lower State always had thrift or pawn shops, 99cents fits in; Pep Boys was automotive, Dunhalls (across the st.) sold used military goods, Woods Garage (on corner from Pep Boys) was a towing service w/cars stored there. Not everyone can afford Nordstroms and boutique shops. Good to have options, not just pander to the elite.

You have a serious termite problem!!! Photo of the pile of sand is actually pellets of termite feses on the floor. Photos of wings still attached indicate they may be ready to move (swarm), since you already have piles of pellets; I think they have been there for some time. You rarely see them and you have photos, means your building is loaded with termites. My brother experienced this in an apartment one year; he removed a board attached to the wall and they swarmed out of the wall. They had to evacuate the entire apt complex and tent the building.

"seriously though, folks..." a friend used Siri to diagnose a car problem and she did. They were working on an older school district truck, could get it started but couldn't keep it going. They checked all the logical parts in the chain, did diagnostics, but no go. So, he, enchanted with his iPhone newly gifted from Darling Daughter, calls Siri and explains make, model, engine, etc and problem, and what they've tried so far. Siri doesn't hesitate and asks "Have you checked the pressure in the manifold?" Bingo. One small part was causing something to go wrong and the pressure was too low. Replaced the part and it was fixed. One time, he asked her what she was wearing and she replied, not skipping a beat, "Titanium, steel,... (etc) I love that she's programmed with a sense of humor.

Benefits? most likely very few other than mandated by law. And managers at most discount chains get OK but not great salaries. Most of these types of stores have employee schedules that change weekly. You never know from one week to the next what your hours will be. Hard to live a decent life around these types of so-called schedules. You can say well, they a will be lucky to have a job, but honestly, one that keeps you in poverty will just grind you down.

I know you are asking for professional help, but I wanted to encourage you IF you are up for it, that Howard's Restore a Finish is very easy to use. It comes in a full range of finish colors. Most people are intimidated by the idea of sanding and other prep work, but Howard's formula allows you to simply spread it on, rub it in with steel wool with the grain, and that is it. My hubby and I restored an old antique dining table and chairs of my mother's and also a few small side tables. It did the job on white rings and other marks. Will not help with chips etc., that, a pro would have to address. You do of course have to have a place out of the weather (dampness) to work ; we did it in the garage with the door open. Good luck and hope you enjoy many more years of use from your table, however you go.
