Stray Cat Looking for Owner

2012-07-19 09:51 PM

Kitty crossed the rainbow bridge today. This evening we gave him a sedative. While waiting for the drug to take affect, Julia Di Sieno spoke briefly with Fire Station 30 of Solvang with last minute updates. The Fire captain told Julia he wanted to adopt the kitty, if his owner was not found. This made the euthansia even more difficult for Julia.
Julia Di Sieno, co founder and exutive director held Kitty close, and spoke softly to him while he clung to her and slipped away. No more suffering sweet kitty.

Comment 367. No animal should ever be dropped off and die alone. The last thing to go, is their hearing. We all continued to try and comfort this handsome boy, when he left his sick little body.....=(
Its music to our ears that you had your Vet do the deed. Thank you for the compassion. Helps us get thru the many sad and difficult times of running an animal/wildlife org...

610P Your ten year old probably has a pretty skewed perception of what government spending is like, since chances are you're the one explaining it to them. Do you mention that we have a defense budget larger than the next 20-odd countries combined? That our two costly (and unnecessary) overseas wars have cost us over a trillion dollars in actual moneys, not to mention the cost of human suffering at home (in the form of our veterans and their rehabilitation into society) and abroad?

I'm not saying this government (local, state, federal) doesn't spend a lot of money on welfare. But to act like it doesn't spend an extraordinary amount of money on its military and war potential is...kind of untrue.

Beach Fee Meetings

I thought this was a democracy, which means government by the people. I have little doubt that the majority sentiment is for unpaid parking, can we please end the discussion there. Find another way to balance the budget like eliminating the multiple layers of beauracracy in the department. Cut salaries of county higher-ups; can it really be that difficult to attract talent in the most desirable city in the US? Rangers are cheaper than sheriffs, friendlier, and reduce crime. Do we understand one another?

It is time to give the job back to them instead of this endless proliferation of taxpayer funded secular Homeless Inc yeehaws, who have yet to show one iota of the success that the good old time religion is showing at the Rescue Mission and Salvation Army.

If you can't find a way to enjoy the 4th of July, cinco de mayo, or the solstice then please avoid fiesta. There is plenty I don't like about fiesta, but shockingly I don't do those things. Joes has some of the strongest drinks and always over serves on holidays, if I didn't want belligerent drunks areound I wouldn't go to bars on state ever but especially during holidays.

There is a lot of very interesting and fun daytime and early evening celebrations. And it's not the running of the bulls it's a parade. You could stay home all the time but I am worried about the stories I read about roofs collapsing. Research the fiesta events and go to the ones that look like your kind of fun.

A plea deal is accepted all the time by people that believe they will win the trial but don't want to risk it. Because once you go to trial they throw the book at you if you lose. Sometimes its better not to take the chance. Do you think these two people deserved to be put in prison for 10-15 years? You do realize the California prison system is bursting. No room for anyone but hard core criminals(violent felony's,Murder,Rape,molesters,robbery..etc) The county jails are now full with people that should be in prison.

Viva Fiesta!

I love the big parade (El Desfile Historico) only because I'm still horse-crazy. I now watch it on tv. With the volume OFF ;-)
I worked with and was an outrider with Bob Mastagni & his Belgians in the early 70's (bless his heart, and Nancy's; and RIP.).
I wasn't born here but remember no other place. I just don't handle crowds and that's not the only reason I'm not real big on Fiesta. I agree it's important to SB economically. I never go downtown during Fiesta.
I always like to see good dancing of many kinds; I should make a point of watching opening night (Noches de la Ronda, no?)
OH! Remember the caballos "parade" or whatever it was called?! They'd shut down a block or two for horses to hang out the day after the big parade. That was fantastic. (right Flicka? :-)) Bet it was cancelled due to liability. Ah, one can be so young when they start thinking about "the good old days."

I never said we need to eliminate partisan view points. I said there needs to be a balance between the two. Make room at the table for both sides and stop demonizing one or the other. But labeling these two points of view is perfectly okay because each has something to offer.

Best results come when accommodation is reached between the two - not consensus or homogenization but any feel-good project also needs to be fiscally accountable. And there you have it.

I was a flower girl in the parade for three years back when. Used to love the street parties and dances on the lower east side in my late teens and 20s. Later, just tried to leave town. Lately, more likely to stay home, maybe make a trip to De la Guerra Plaza for tacos or Guadalupe for tamales--truly, the best. Used to love the horse parade when it was a separate event. Maybe I'll go watch the parade this year, what the heck.

But yes, cascarones are required to be 4 for a dollar. Maybe the City Council needs to get involved in that one.

1. First two years at a junior college
2. Find a state that is not run by education unions for the cheapest tuition; a good public education is as good as anywhere private and more so - no hot house pretensions
3. Work as a companion for a frail but independent adult in exchange for free room and board and flexible hours on duty.
4. Work as many waiter/waitressing jobs than provide tips for excellent service, as you can fit into your schedule.
5. Devote four years to studying and free campus activities as your only recreational outlet.
6. Shop at thrift stores for anything you need.
7. Ditch your monthly cell phone and internet fees, learn to use free internet services
8. No car; public transportation or walking or bike only
9. Keep health costs low with sane and sober living
10. Incur no debt
11. Look at what the military offers for college benefits
12. Explore grants and scholarship

Portugal is one of the failed nation states in the EU. One of the PIIGS- Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain. How is all that easy dope working for you, Portugal?

What nation consistently ranks at the top of success and quality of life? Singapore - where any illegal drug use carries the death penalty. Go figure.

So I repeat, where is the a nation that has a direct interest in the sale, taxation and regulation of pot sales? That is what the pro-pot crowd is asking for. They want it sold, taxed and regulated like alcohol.

I live near Brandon but didn't hear anything. What's interesting is that whenever a question like this is asked on Edhat, people always answer that it was either fireworks or a car backfiring. Several years ago my husband and I heard what sounded like fireworks in our cul-de-sac, immediately followed by a car pulling away. Since there are families in our neighborhood who shoot off fireworks, we didn't think anything of it. Imagine my surprise when a sheriff showed up at my door a few days later, asking if I had any information about the shooting on our street. Just goes to show you, it's not always fireworks or cars backfiring!

544-I don't look for trouble but when you are out in public surrounded by inebriated people they can come out of nowhere and pick a fight for no reason at all. once while hanging out at Joe's Cafe some drunk dude came out of nowhere and got in my face and wanted to fight me because he was in a drunk and billigerent mood. i "wasn't looking for trouble" but i found it. fortunately Francisco (the bartender and my long time friend) jumped from behind the bar and grabbed the drunk and tossed him out on State Street. your comment saying "blah blah blah" was totally uncalled for since you don't know me or my experiences with fiesta. maybe you should read the comment guidelines below where it says "if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all."

There is a line between "compassion" and doing good and criminal negligence regarding the fiduciary control of public funds. Some people get so carried away with the mission, they forget it is not their money to spend.

Progressives have no end of reasons to spend other people's money. That is a given. Conservatives want control and accountability when exactly those funds are being spent.

There is a line where both can work together. There really is, but you can't stack the deck on one side only. Voters, please maintain a balance among your elected representatives who are your watchdogs.

Don't let the pendulum to swing too far in only one direction. Always season both sides of the political spectrum with vigilant care takers. Enough of this partisan divisiveness. Make room for both. The Tea Party belongs at the table too, if you have also set a place for a Tax and Spend Liberal.

Seems to me that they turn them off in the neighborhood; once they're on Calle Real with cross streets of oak Park Lane, Junipero, etc. I haven't bothered to confirm this w/AMR.

I live next to the onramp, so yes, the sirens are a much bigger issue to me than the helicopters! But neither bother me. (I assume northbound on 101 ambulances do the same; but my aural interpretation leads me to think most sirens are from southbound; they need to have siren on while on the underpass.)

The issue is that they think food should be cheap and readily available. They aren't fooling anyone, especially nature. We are not meant to have unlimited supplies of food. Logistically, it just doesn't work, otherwise every single organism would thrive at no expense of any others.

For every act that we try to control, 10 natural processes counter act it to attempt to fix the balance. There is no winning in this imaginary war we have created with food production.

I don't mean to blame solely the repubs, as democrats are guilty of this too. I particularly like repubs though, because they tend to hate government intervention, except when their lobbyists are the ones receiving the subsidies. They have sold the American dream to the highest bidder.

Not sure it is smart to be the very first country or state in the entire world to fully legalize pot. Decriminalized pot countries don't count; the bleat is for fully legal pot. Let's learn by others example how to make that work.

I'm sick and tired of stoners like you screaming about alcohol...as if taking the attention off how BAD marijuana is by focusing instead on alcohol will somehow make marijuana any better. "Don't pay any attention to that man behind the curtain...."

Quit and do what? Move? I'm not certain why that would make anyone cry except the business owners who are not paying their employees enough to live on. I know that is then transferred to the customer who buys the products. So prices of goods and services goes up so the employees of businesses can be paid enough to feed their families and pay their bills. I can live with that. But you cannot expect to work at McDonalds and support a family of four. Learn a skill and get a better job. Those jobs used to go to teenagers and college students now there is another group of people filling these positions. Then you have the laborers, maids, and gardeners working for increasingly depressed amounts of money. Accepting low wages is dragging down the pay of the industry.

UPDATE: Dog Owner Identified

2012-07-19 02:38 PM

897P here-Don't feel sorry for my dog 313. She is very well socialized. I have a large group of friends and family that she interacts with on a regular basis. She also interacts with their dogs. As I said she is not agressive. I just prefer strangers not to interact with her. I would never take her to a dog park. We have plenty of room for her to run with dogs that I know and trust. I will not subject her to a dog park where most of the owners have no hope of actually controlling their dogs off leash. Plus I wouldn't want her picking up any bad habits or being bullied. Each to his own I guess. I'm glad that you are reminded that not all dog owners want strangers to have free access to their pets though.

Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital's he...

2012-07-19 02:37 PM

You folks have missed the point entirely. This isn't about helicopters or saving lives. It IS about Cottage saying one thing in orderto get approval, and then having it be a complete different animal once complete... motivated entirely for profit. The development at the old St. Francis site is another prime example. Supposedly built for employees and some affordable units, the developer is now selling to anyone at top market rate. Cottage leaves a huge footprint on the community and the community doesn't benefit much.

Marble Removed

2012-07-19 02:29 PM

Oh come on 389, there are lots of us here who enjoy the local color and don't need everything to look like a magazine cover all the time. All I want is for my neighbors--and other people's neighbors--to be quiet most of the time, and clean. As far as how they want to decorate their property, well, they leave me alone and I'll leave them alone. The marble/statue house, where you could go at the holidays and See Santa! with the kids, was a wonderful feature of life here for many years. Things like that don't usually outlast their eccentric purveyors. We were lucky to have such characters among us for a while.

Citing a mythological Chinese emperor (for one example) as a marijuana user brings nothing to the table. I could also argue that Zeus, Michelangelo and Millard Fillmore were ardently anti-pot. What would it prove??

FWIW, I'm pro-legalization, but think that the "dispensaries" were largely a joke as run here in SB and that these sort of spurious arguments, dubious lists and often paranoia-tinged rants only serve to enhance the popular perception that smokers are not the brightest bulbs.

UC Students nervous about latest fe...

2012-07-19 01:44 PM

I would like to offer a different perspective. I spent a year at UCSB on a partial scholarship. This was in 2004. It was a good school but not great. When I did the math of what is was going to cost me to put myself through another 3 years, it was a staggering amount of money. I didn't want that kind of debt circling around my head. I left UCSB and enrolled in trade school. I became a diesel mechanic. I had a job the day I graduated and have never been unemployed or short work hours since then. The work is interesting and challenging (and to be honest, really fun). I have friends who cannot find work with their 4 year degree from UCSB and other UC schools or are seriously underemployed. There is a dearth of skilled tradespeople out there and a lot of demand. A high dollar UC education doesn't get you what it used to. I'm glad I figured that out especially in this continued woeful economy.

As an alcoholic, and formerly homeless in SB (96-03;04-08;)and most recently, November,2012, to March,2012.. In all the years on the streets in SB I never stayed a night at "CASA". One of the reasons was the "staff"(some) who would allow, enable, and participate in substance abuse. I heard an administrator at "CASA" this past January say,"if you can walk, and talk, your in!" Yet, we must, I repeat, MUST!!! not let those that truly benefit from "CASA" be put in the same boat as those that have made their life's working those hearts that truly bleed for the few "CASA" was meant to help. Their there, hiding from us who would mistake them for the many who take advantage of hope.

He seemed to be promoting his daughter, who is very cute and attractive, that's true.. His "Vie en Rose" was beautifu --,he sang it twice, and it brought tears to my eyes. Just like the good old days, you have to really want an education and work to get it.

That means holding a couple of jobs, living like an deprived orphan, and hitting the books 24/7. Starving students were the way that it was then, and needs to be that way again now.

And profs need to do that threadbare routine again instead of driving around campus in their Jaguars and BMW's complaining more about their retirement accounts than their students lack of learning.

The education industry massively sucking up the tax dollar for little in return is the next bubble to burst. You heard it here first.

As cruel as it sounds, I'd wish there was more "food insecurity" in this country. It just pains me to see it only happen to those that have no money to afford it.

383 - Progressivism has nothing to do with it. The "conservatives" in the federal government have completely destroyed the natural process with which crops are harvested. GMO corn and cotton are subsidized to the nth degree, giving a false sense of security, and ruining our future for productive food harvest. Once that industry also tanks, we will all be in real trouble. They've been coddling the gluttons who stuff their face with fast food for years. Everyone stop building now. No more progress. In fact, we should remove all existing buildings. It's obvious a mistake was made and the city was built where others used to live and bury their people. Let's not hide the facts and pretend it's not true. The entire pennesula is a grave yard to people of yesteryear. Stop all building, progress and productivity now....

This crack-down is not Obama's decision. It is the District Attorney's who are making these decisions - which is against the policy of the US Attorney General, Eric Holder - who the Republicans are going after with a vengeance.

My guess is that the California State Attorneys doing this are being heavily influenced by the Republican party. Going after MM is an easy target for them - they are doing this to put Obama and Holder in a hard place - if Obama tries to stop this, the Republicans will use that against him saying he is pro-pot and losing those voters.

"Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. sharply criticized lawmakers Monday for voting to hold him in contempt of Congress last week, saying Republicans have made him a “proxy” to attack President Obama in an election year."

Example - Melinda Haag, U.S Attorney for Northern California - who unfortunately was appointed by Obama - is leading the attack.

Funny they put them behind the Arlington. I think tonight when I take out the trash, I'll put the cans in front of my neigbors house. Saving these ugly paintings is lame. Especially the portion that has the sack bearing woman toiling for food with her man standing next to her watching her work as he holds what could be a spear or oar. Or the famous one with a priest next to his enslaved Chumash builders. Thank god they gave these slaves a casino in reparations for such atrocities! Oh wait.... The band of chusmash with a casino are the ones who fleed enslavement. My bad.

Lost Dog

2012-07-19 12:37 PM

This poor dog still hasn't been caught and it's so sad to see her so lost & scared. I know several people are trying different things to catch her but we need some professional help, it's almost been a week and she needs to get some medical assistance. She's exhausted and probably getting dehydrated and walks with a little limp but it might be because she's on the run and her pads are sore.

She's (maybe it's a he) is a white dog with brown markings, greyhound style build, with no collar if you know anyone missing a dog.

She seems to stay within a 6-8 block radius and is good about staying off the streets.

I have contact Carpinteria Animal Control and they're no help.

193: I'm not sure you understand what DNS is and how it works. It would make no sense for Cox to "use DNS" to tell you your bill was late. DNS means Domain Name System and is the internet number to name directory. Cox's DNS servers suck. Use the OpenDNS servers or some others that are correctly configured and more reliable. Many people in town who have had "slow Cox service" issues have resolved them by switching their DNS settings.

Fiesta organizers should do like other big cities do and Close Down State Street to Cars. Each enterance point can be monitored by police and video. Cars with gang bangers are illiminated. Forcing more people than fit on a side walk to fit on that side walk is alleviated. Restaurants can set up outside dining in the street. Other vendors could buy space. Do it from 5pm to 2am only. Fiesta would be safer, more profitable, newly invented, less of a fear-fest. What is up with making realisitc and beneficial changes in this town?

We were warned away from Fiesta (our new friend called it a realtor's parade) when we moved here 20 years ago. It took a few years - and a mistake - when we first saw the parade. And loved it! The Fiesta parade is amazing and exciting. The horses are spectacular! There is so much pride in the many riders. There is a sense of history. It's an extravaganza and I feel appreciative to the participants for all their major efforts to get the horses here ~ and to the city for how they handle the logistics and cleanup. I'm sure it brings a lot of needed revenue in to town that helps us all through the year. I'm not so fond of the opening ceremonies at the Mission and there are too many mariachis for me - I like the musicians but tire fast of the music. In answer to your question, I agree with others about the general ambiance of warmth and excitement, being out amongst other enjoyers ~ and the parade! I feel happy being around Fiesta!

I wish they had gone after the Wall Street bankers that put us in this recession with their creative financing schemes and mortgage back securities. Has anyone except Martha Stewart and Bernie Madoff gone to jail for financial crimes?

Obama is trying to have it both ways, but in doing so he risks giving away the election to Romney. People prefer a president that stands up for his principles instead of trying to appeal to the conservatives.

As for finding the owners to say goodbye, the humane society doesn't allow that. 2012-07-19 11:49 AM

There are good and bad in any big organization. The SBSO has far more good than bad cops; they even have a lot of pretty good managers, though overall top management could be improved. With our big homeless and drug problems leading to lots of people in jail, they are stretched thin to do all the jobs we want them to do.

I am pleased that those who chose to endanger others are finally and strongly getting the message that cops will shoot. If you have to shoot, you have to shoot to stop now, which means shooting to kill. Shooting to wound is a myth, and is impossible to do in rapidly changing, dangerous, stressful situations. Don't do anything that would make a cop have to pull a gun on you, because you'll die. Hurrah that the cops take their jobs and responsibilities so seriously that they investigate every shooting to make sure it was justified. I hope most of us are regularly on their side.

We are the Natives who`ve never left our sacred home & who keep our ceremonies alive,to the best of our ability...without casino assistance. We have never hurt you in any way,but your blood-lust blinds you to who we are & what we do. Santa Barbara is very spiritually sick, & we could heal her tremendously if allowed & with the help of her citizenry...but the anger must stop or there`s nothing we can do & SB will continue to rot from the inside as she`s been doing, & your disdain for anyone who has more than you in this life only feeds the disease. America`s hatred for Native peoples is what`s killing her. Consider this...there`s only ONE Earth, & YOU live here too.

I like the dancing, the music, the food, spending time with friends and family and seeing lots of good natured celebrating. The excessive partying is what gives fiesta a bad rap among some locals. I have found it to be fairly contained to a few places and easy to avoid (or easy to find if thats what you like to do, no judgement). For people that are new to the area or out of towners, there is a lot of fun to be had. Know what you like to do and find those things.

I switched the price tags on a pair of "hot pants" (that should date this story :) ... making them $5 less than their actual price because I was short the cash and really wanted to wear them that nite. The store cop humiliated me for a looong time in his office and then had me put behind bars, fingerprinted, mug- shots, bail set, court date etc. All this for $5 !!! Unfortunately, instead of teaching me a lesson it only made me want to shoplift "for the thrill of doing something forbidden". I probably would never have done it again had they not made such a big deal over $5. Ironic huh ?

311P Just because I decide to leave town during fiestas does not make me new to the area nor does it mean I don't get it. I was born and raised here and have attended fiestas as a child and young adult. It is not I but fiestas that has changed over the years. My family participated in the music, dancing, and food for decades. Now it is different and apart from a couple of events unrecognizable when compared to what it used to be. Please enjoy your 5 day party with all of those who come into town, drink heavily, drive drunk, stagger around, and make a complete mess. Not to worry the locals will clean it up after you leave.

To: 897P, I can't help but feel sorry for your dog. One of my dogs greatest joys is to greet a person or animal and that is because I have made sure she has been well socialized at the dogparks since she was very young. Your post is a good reminder that not all dog owners feel this way and we shouldn't ever "assume" :(

Love these comments, can totally tell who's a long-time local/native that appreciates Fiesta and those who are newer to the area and just don't "get it" (which there is nothing wrong with, to each his own)

I will be out and about appreciating the talented dancing, deliciously unhealthy food, and basking in the high-energy atmosphere we don't have enough of these days. I'm most looking forward to what I do every year - being around people who lose themselves in their passion, culture, and history, THAT is a beautiful thing.

Past the Past

Stole the same car thirteen times. Well, I said," Next time I see your keys, (in the ignition for the most, but then had to get 'em out of the glove box), in your car, I won't hesitate to take it". How the heck could a 17 year old, who had no real home, resist? Got pulled over in Santa Ynez, had to leave it running, while the cop wrote a ticket for expired tags. He then said seeya and mailed the ticket to the poor doc. I guess that was a fling that was more pain than pleasure for him. It was a beautiful car and I was careful to keep it that way. That final joy ride was indeed crazy. Three people in the front seat, and cuervo in the middle, of a red 911 porche with a whale tail, all the way to pismo. You guys can't beat that. I know, who would, in their right mind, do that? You're going out with a cute older guy whom you met on Milpas street as I, in my beat up blue bug, and he, in his flashy car, smiling, as he drives next to me on a sunny day............................

Turns out it's a "student pilot" thanks to the Black Phoebe ID. According to the wiki it's a juvenile (brown rather than black feathers), so the amazing aerial exploits I saw were performed by a bird that's only been on the wing for a short time. Wishing now I'd been able to spend more time there getting shots at higher shutter speed. It's so fast that getting good pix is mostly luck and patience. One line in the wiki reminds me of the Forest Gump line, "If I went somewhere, I was runninG." This little bird probably didn't take more than half a dozen steps in the time I watched, flying even a few inches to catch something on the creek bank. Thanks, everyone! :)

UPDATE: Dog Owner Identified

2012-07-19 10:24 AM

I have to agree with 144. Just because I have my dog out in public does not give anyone the right to walk up and pet her. And when someone tries and I ask them not to touch my dog they act as if I have insulted them. If you want to pet a dog go get one. There are plenty at the shelter. I also say no when people ask to pet her. My dog is not agressive but I don't want some strange person to come up mishandle her in some way. My advice to those out in public, especially with children, leave other people's dogs alone. Regarding the lady in the story, she should not have a dog or be allowed in public.

Missed The Target

2012-07-19 10:02 AM

@298904P, for a mole or ground squirrel problem, I very much recommend the sonic mole repellers - I had a HUGE problem with them in my old property, bought a couple of these guys (I think I paid $20 or $25 for the pair), stuck them in the ground, and within a week all the little darlings left. The ones I used were battery operated, but I see there are solar powered ones out now too.

I am strongly against poison for dealing with anything - I will use snap traps for rats and mice (much faster and more humane killing method), peppermint oil-based ant repellant, and just keeping tasty temptations in good storage containers. There is no type of pest that needs poisoning where there isn't a better and safer alternative out there. Poison is just a lazy way to deal with it.

Those pics are fascinating, particularly knowing how much they weigh and how much care is going into preserving a piece of our history in the form of a mural. Art is always a hotly debated and much criticized topic in our little town. I grew up in Chicago where there is every kind of art & sculpture on the streets for all to experience and in weather that is more extreme than ours. I think we would have a lot more street art in SB if people weren't always so quick to criticize everything new & different. Perhaps TOLERANCE would also be a good attitude to aspire to have when looking at art.

My job is far from easy and in my position we would make a LOT more money working in the private sector. We are very unsupported by the community and the BOS - who are all very quick to demand us to drop everything and tend to their client of concern. I don't drive around all day doing my own errands or hiding out until the time clock hits. In some ways it is a little like what the Earthling Bookstore created for us so long ago. Friends gather and share stories, debate issues and make new friends. Seniors who might otherwise have nobody to talk to can sit for a while and have some company. Students have a safe, non-alcohol environment where they can study and socialize. And they raised the bar for coffee quality—remember the rusty water at Dunkin' Donuts?

But presently, these pedestrian connection some of the worst and most dangerous in the city. Particularly when used by out of town tourists, who are not familiar with the multiple and now recognized hazards.

To wit:

1. broken sidewalk access

2. rough pavement, roots, uneven surfaces,

3. no cross walks where required,

4. chronic speeding,

5. impaired sight lines,

6. cross walks than end in the middle of a bus stop,

7. requirement of multiple, busy, high traffic street crossings just to go in a straight line

Perhaps the family knew the cat was sick and took it to the fire station because they wanted to get it help they could not afford. This is horrible to see and I feel for the cat but I prefer to think the humans took it to a safe place because they wanted what was best for it. People sometimes fall on hard times especially in this recession. Its really too bad nothing can be done, it looks like one of my boys.

Voters Beware!

2012-07-19 09:04 AM

Hmmm, let's see. According to the media, Santa Ynez High School has the highest standardized test scores in the county, top 10% in the state. They are rated in the top 800 schools in the nation by one magazine, the top 1000 in another. They have a graduation rate in excess of 98% and a dropout rate of less than 1%, even with a diverse population including 35% below the poverty line. Sounds to me like Turnbull and teachers are doing a great job and earning their pay. Why would they change to be like "other" schools that are less successful and do a poorer job for their students?

The board of regents has that backwards. They should make salary cuts and staff reductions first and then, if needed, raise tuition. Whether the tax increases happen or not the school is going to raise tuition. That's just what they do and the administrators need raises. I will definitely not be voting for any tax increases for anything until I see local and state governments doing some serious house cleaning. If they can afford to fund all of their pet projects they have too much money and I will not be voting to give them more. My family has had to cut back to the essentials it's time for government to do the same.

They don't want a big city bridge in their small town? What does that even mean? The freeway is being widened because there are more cars on it. Why? Because there are more people in the area than there were in the past. The bridges are old and need to be upgraded and yes made bigger to accomodate the wider freeway. The population isn't decreasing, it is increasing. Things are going to change to accomodate more people. No amount of whining is going to change that fact. And if you have children or you moved to this area from somewhere else you are part of the reason for the increase in people. So please just accept that these changes need to be made. I know someone who knew Mr. Parrish. He said that he was the kindest guy, spiritual, soft spoken and very introspective. He cannot even believe that Mr. Parrish would be capable of such a thing, and that he fled because he thought he had no chance. I never met him. I guess the real bummer here is, how the He// can we know if people are concealing such a horrible habit/dysfunction? I mean, what child makes something up like that? I was a victim when I was 5 years old. Luckily, the kid was only 16 and didn't do anything major. BUT, even with that, I felt shame and kept it a secret from all but my mom. I mean, if this guy is guilty, yes, I believe in absolute harshest punishment. But how do we know unless we catch them in the act? We believe our kids when they tell us something happened. Right?

Transfer flights of stable patients were never discussed as a possible use for the heli pad, they are not saving lives they are replacing ambulance trips because they are billable at extortionate rates.

Bad for the patient, bad for the neighbors.

At 13, shoplifted a pair of nylons from Penney's, got caught and had to go to the police station with my dad. Was interviewed by a young policewoman who turned out to be my closest friend's new stepmother. Her dad was a sergeant then, but later was the chief. Old timers will know who these folks were for sure.... That cured me, never again. But before that I had stolen some Man-Tan (first fake tan lotion for those who weren't around in the early 60s) from Thrifty Drug, but was scared to ever use it and have the evidence visible on my skin. And ironically my first part-time job during college was at Thrifty.

Watch out for the NIMBY's ! Every year there is some new crisis that everyone gets worked up about, AND it always works out fine and things are better than they were before. Cases in point: 1. Carpinteria Creek Footbridge: replacing a decrepit old wooden foot bridge. 2. Main school conversion to non-profit hub and resource center and fast start for young kids.

* The outcry for both of these was unreal and rediculous. BUT, of course, it all worked out fine. The community is happy and life goes on. NOW the NIMBY's are ont it again about the overpasses. Just watch the theatrics.. but it will also turn out just fine. Hooray! (idiots!)

They would do some very funny things together like wearing identical, custom made outfits. I had coffee with them once and they were preparing for a trip to Europe. Victoria explained that they took basically no clothes at all and had outfits made for them after they arrived in Paris. They were very generous, Joe giving toys, food and money away as Santa and donating thousands to charity. RIP Joe and Vic

You are correct SY, of course Starbucks supports the troops. But whenever a person or corporation takes a stand against the war, any war, the radical right demonizes them claiming they are "un-American", against the Constitution and against the troops. These same forces still cling to the notion that the anti-war movement caused America to "lose" the obviously un-winable Vietnam war. As for the change at that particular Starbucks, the place was being taken over by transients who found it to be more comfortable than the benches on the street. Can you blame them? Note to self: If I ever end up homeless, I must look for a coffee shop stocked with LazyBoy chairs.

Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital's he...

2012-07-19 08:06 AM

Seems to me that if you don't live in the area, or the flight/noise path, then you should slap your trap about making judgements and calling people whiners. The hospital has been outgrowing its space for decades. Instead of relocating to a less residential area, they chose to bloat and push aside the neighborhood. And now, with full knowledge that they would be severely impacting neighbors, they slipped in an airport -- under the pretense that it would be rarely used, and only for serious life-threatening trauma cases. The hospital misled the community, and now they arrogantly dismiss the complaints. And the sycophants who believe that Cottage can do no wrong are willing to attack the neighbors who are struggling to deal with the incredible impacts when the helos come in for a landing -- many times for injuries that do not justify a helicopter flight.

Having foreseen the current financial crisis, I submitted a visionary proposal to UCSB in my application to become Assoc. Vice Chancellor.
I wanted to liberate undergrad students from the bricks and mortar of an unstimulating stationary campus by utilizing 21st Century communications technology that allowed them to trek through the world's best places while earning their degrees. I presented a business model that was a combination of Netflix, Microtel and MIT's Online Campus.
My idea allowed increased quality, reduction in tuition, dramatic increase in enrollment and good profit to serve grad programs at the UCSB campus.
They instead hired someone to manage the campus foodwaste composting project.

@193 - They also send you an email to notify of those items and when there is an 'issue' other than your bill, like your service is down...how do you expect to get those messages then? Also, the idea of being routed through a 'big brother' type DNS server where they are forcing splash pages on you doesn't seem right in the first place.

I use other DNS servers and have never had an issue. And of course Cox is going to slow down in the afternoons. More people in your neighborhood are using it. It's the nature of Cable internet service. Take that in to account the continually increasing load on their backbone with all the new "connected' devices, smart phones, streaming services, etc. and your Cable isn't going to be getting faster until they bring in more bandwidth.

They use DNS to force those messages through to you. Otherwise you might run into a situation where your internet simply doesn't work and you have no idea why.
