State Water Project |

Almost all of Santa Barbara County bought the state water Kool-Aid, all except Lompoc. The push followed on a severe drought, broken by the "March Miracle" rains but by that point the lies had been disseminated and the voters bought into the doomsday frenzy. Foremost was the News-Press (pre Wendy McCaw) editorializing over and over again that the sky was falling and would fall definitely if we did not vote for State Water. About the stupidest was Solvang which bought a huge amount of water that it is struggling to pay for (and doesn't need.) The Grand Jury did an extensive report back in the 90's. Moral of the story is the old cliche: you can fool some of the people some of the time, but not all the people all the time; unfortunately, the "some of the people" were the majority of voters. As a prior commenter noted: if we ever are in a serious drought situation, so will be everyone else and we will not get what we paid for. ...The Santa Barbara greenery predates State Water and has deep roots, planted as it was many years ago. The backyard gardens are something else again.

The new terminal is completely lacking in style and charm. It's bland exterior is complemented by a cavernous echoing interior. (But you can get a bottle of water in secure areas). The last time I was there to pick up some delayed lugage there was no place to park and no signage to direct me. I MEAN NO PARKING! Plenty of partly completed lots but not one open. What poor public service and lack of planning!

297659: Thank you. I had read of the motor boat earlier and it's great it worked so well. Natural ponds without inflow and outflow (or unnatural ones) like that one, or like Zaca Lake do always have an algae problem in the summer. The smell was (and will be again) a natural one, but the extent was extreme. Wonderful to be able to take care of it so quickly. Thanks, Parks Director Nancy Rapp, and those at the Parks who did the work.

I'm guessing George Washington Smith, an amazing architect, was rolling over in his grave in Friday the13th...and what do you know? A couple of hours later his once simply lovely house was aflame. Sometimes less is more, and GWS was one promote that idea in Santa Barbara . A burned home is always a tragedy, but my guess is that this home was not occupied, and was staged for sale at an excessive price in a really lousy real estate market. I sincerely hope no one's personal and sentimental belongings were lost in the fire and that it was just a lot of faux furnishings to make a spec home look lived in.

We had a really bad problem a few years ago. I looked up the name and residential phone number of the actual owner of the property and called them at 2 AM. And I held the phone so that they could hear the noise coming from their income property. I told them that when their tenants keep us awake that we will call the property owners. This was quite effective.

The problem is that intelligent, competent people are busy raising families, paying mortgages, running small businesses and working 50+ hours each week. That’s why we end up with losers who see the SB City Council and Mayor's position as a route to a pension, big bucks (or at least bigger than they've earned working for Planned Parenthood), self-serving graft and West Coast Liberal Boss Tweedism. When someone with half a brain cell runs for Mayor, they'll win in a landslide.

The police don't just show up they are very busy here..Things have changed it's not the quiet little town it used to be. They put emergency calls first so sometimes a 415 Noise complaint can take hours for them to show up to..

Remember when you drove up the 101 past Buellton and all you saw was cattle grazing? Then the homeowners of Santa Barbara South Coast paid to bring in state water and suddenly all you saw was boutique and industrial vineyards for as far as the eye could see. The fear of having to take a shower with a bucket, not wash your car, and have a brown lawn was responsible for the industrial-agricultural development that you see all the way up the 101 to San Jose. We're watching a repeat of this same pattern with the California bullet train. Developers all along the route are licking their lips over new sprawl to be developed alongside the route's stations, and once again, you're paying for it.

Unless you own a huge piece of property, you don't want one of these trees! It's like planting a coast redwood in your front yard, only a bit faster--pretty soon the whole house has disappeared behind the 4-foot diameter trunk and spreading branches--no sun in any windows on that side of the house ever. And then there are the cones, widow-makers indeed. Every year you either take your life in your hands walking under the tree during cone season, or you pay a lot to have an arborist go up and cut the things down. And then there are the dead branches--even the smallest ones covered with razor-sharp blade-like leaflets. Great tree to look at in a park, terrible choice for a normal house garden. There are some downtown on small city lots that completely dwarf the houses behind them.

@553, The plan to rid the Bird Refuge of its stench was in the end a simple one, and pretty low tech. An outboard motor boat plied the refuge for several hours over a couple of days. That was apparently enough to aerate the water to reduce the algae bloom caused smell.

578 REALLY??? I seriously doubt you've driven any of the more recent Mustangs. The ones with the truly unsafe handling were the 67-68 GTA's with 390 V8. Inefficient? Try 6 mpg city and 10-12 Freeway if you kept the speed under 70. Handling? My '67 GTA Fastback was front-heavy and feather-weight over rear axle. Whenever it rained, I had to throw two 50-Lb sacks of redi-mix in the back or my car handled worse than a 1960 Corvair! Mustangs of the past 15 years or so, have far closer to even front/rear weight distribution, for one. Their suspensions in recent years have drawn considerable praise from professional automobile test drivers, and my '98 with manual tranny, would deliver 28 mpg at an average 75 mph on the freeway between L.A. and S.B. For a car that makes 60 mph in under 6 seconds, I think that's pretty darned efficient fuel consumption, and I'll bet it totally blows away the lousy gas mileage you're getting on that bloated truck.

If you're not married, then it's not "WE" who owes some money for student loans. These would be in his name, I would hope. You've made enough sacrifices and now are being asked to sacrifice your own plans so that he can, err-- what? Find himself? On your dime? He needs to grow up and take responsibility for his own choices, and you should quit enabling his permanent adolescence. The plans for traveling could be a cowardly transition away from you, a gradual sort of breaking up. See what he says if you say that you can go on this trip. And if he says he needs to take this journey alone, do yourself a favor and move on with your own life.

Thank goodness for the WCN and any other rescuer that was involved in this endeavor. These edhat comments are a revealing study in empathy (who has it and who's impaired.) Also we can see who is Biocentric as opposed to simply Androcentric. Situations which define all of us, our humanity, our perceptions...are evident in every seemingly small act. The healthy survival of a thriving diverse planet (more than human) depends on what we do in our own backyards and neighborhoods. We are constantly being given these chances to evolve. If, in the future, we find ourselves in trouble, in pain,trapped...we know the kind of being we wish to discover us in our plight.

Well, all the "Save Our Valley" sob stories are interesting. Too bad the Chumash didn't come up with an iorn-clad policy of "Save Our Land" about 1782. Now all the invading hoards from Los Angeles, who bought little ranchettes that broke up the open space in Santa Ynez, think they own the whole area. I knew people of Chumash descent who didn't dare mention it before the 60s, racial bias had them at the bottom of the heap.

The issue is no longer why others try to shame us into creating a vagrant magnet out of our city; but why do we still let them do that to us? Is this now our problem; not theirs. How do you shift from letting them (whomever "they" are) make you feel you are not doing enough. Particularly when that shame leads to floundering in the unworkable status quo, and even making it worse. Try saying no to more vagrants, no more enabling life on the streets, no more playing the guilt card for someone else's benefit and self-satisfied piety. Practice saying no until it feels like finally it is the right thing to do. Saying yes to vagrants got us into this mess, for us and for them. It is stupid to say yes to vagrants. Good book to read: "Why do I feel guilty when I say no?"

Becky is the expert. The rest of us have more good intentions than good information. At the risk of adding to the confusion I concur that you should drop a chunk into your trash every week, so that it goes to the landfill. If you need to break it up, lay it with the ammo side in dirt and use the sledge to hit an area with no ammo showing. Pile a shovel full of dirt against any exposed cartridges to capture possible eruptions. To be more helpful requires a bit more information. What size/caliber is the ammo? .22 caliber is different from it's larger cousins. Are these chunks mostly concrete, with a few cartridges thrown in, or is it a more like a box of ammo into which concrete has been poured? If the police just said to be careful, that is the best information, as they have seen your concrete. Remember, it is also dangerous to break plain concrete with a hammer, as small pieces of rock fly out at high velocity, just like a bullet from a barrel.

Furthering the citation of the law by 296824P, the law DOES NOT STATE if you're going slower than the speed limit, it's slower than the "RATE OF TRAFFIC." to all you vigilantes who believe it's your duty to slow other drivers down who appear to be going to fast according to your opinion you HAVE to pull over BY LAW to let them pass. regardless of whether you think the other driver is going "too fast" by your standards or exceeding the speed limit. if you're impeding the flow of traffic at ANY SPEED you're in the wrong, pull over, let whoever is behind you pass and return to driving your own drive at the speed you're comfortable with. enforcing the traffic code is a job for sworn peace officers, not you. problem solved.

For those questioning Becky's advice you should do a little research on her work. You've got a real, live, expert authority on guns and ammunition chiming in on this post. She doesn't "work" in an ammo factory, she the co-owner and operator. Having purchased both firearms and custom ammo for my firearms at Custom Cartridge i can assure you there is no higher authority on ammunition in the county. The fact that our local SWAT teams would choose Custom Catridge's Hush rounds to ensure civilian safety by preventing shoot through should tell you enough about their legitimacy. Sorry for the rant, i just won't sit here and watch good folks like Becky be slandered by anonymous trolls on edhat.

And, 297550, "humane" means how humans should behave towards the non-human and human life not how that life behaves towards each other or humans. Ducks and geese. (And 560: foie gras, literally "fat liver", is not ordinary liver, but the livers of geese and ducks that are force fed for 12-18 days before being slaughtered. If, as some say, you are what you eat, then what are those who knowingly eat foie gras?)

A good foie gras for me! No difference between stuffing geese and watching some of our human bretheren force fast-food down their own gullets at our fast-food establishments. Long live our own Julia Child - er - or did she die of obesity from too much foie gras? Ahhh... whatta way to go. Signed, Gourmand d'Gastronomie

I'm pretty sure this must be the crow I've been hearing daily for the past 10 days or so, both near my home and at a distance. Its caws are different than the other crows, sounding hoarser and more alarmed. I figured it wasn't a raven I was hearing, because other crows tended to gather around it. Unfortunately they would fly away when I tried to see more closely. I assumed the troubled one flew away with them because it stopped cawing, on those occasions that it came into my yard. I haven't heard it today at all. I hope it got rescued. It's hard to listen to a creature in distress, especially such an intelligent, social one.

i don't know how it would play out if ratified but i honestly like the paid parking at surfer's point near the fairgrounds in ventura. i will often travel south when the waves are too small to surf in town (8 months out of the year). for those who haven't been down there they have two lots for beach access. one is free and the other costs $2 for all day access. i opt for the paid lot most of the time because it's less crowded, much cleaner, free of vagrants in RV's and people sitting in their cars using drugs/alcohol. the pay lot is a much nicer place to change into my wetsuit without having to stand in piles broken glass and cigarette butts, the trash bins aren't overflowing and people don't pack into the lot like sardines and ding up my truck with their car doors. it's also nice to stop and chat with the parking attendant, a friendly and familiar face who earns a living wage because some folks are willing to pay for their peace of mind. just my .02

There are very few public beaches. Most beaches in Santa Barbara are slowly becoming private . Haskels has become private, padero lane is all private. Sandy land is all private. From Hobsons almost to emmet wood is all campers, you cannot park and go to those beaches. And especially if you are in a wheel chair. The county beaches are the only beaches where people, all people rich and poor can go. Ten or twelve dollars may not seem much to you, but it is for a lot of people. With all the taxes that we pay you would think that at least we can go to the beach without paying a fee. Sorry but this is just wrong. It's actually sickening, the mismanagement of our government . Excuse me while I puke.

There are few actual Chumash descendants in the make up of the Indians at Santa Ynez who measure their Indian ancestry in "minute fractions" (if any at all )which no one verifies. An Indian is whoever the tribal government says is an elligible Indian and there are no legal rights involved only the discretion of the tribal government. This has been the case for many years and no one cared. Those seeking tribal "membership" were mainly looking for federal welfare grants and services and the larger the "tribe" the more benefits. Now the claim to be Indian and for acceptance of membership means big money from the gambling losses at the casino. So now no one else claiming a right to be a member can get in and those fed up with the arrogance and tyranny of Tribal Chairmen Armenta are afraid to speak out at the risk of losing all that money!

The beautiful Santa Ynez countryside will be lost to all, including the future children of the Chumash. Yes, it is very sad that the Chumash lived in such poverty but those horrible conditions have changed and can no longer be used as a resonable argument for current, unnecessary, development. Did the supervisors side with the money source or the needs of the entire community? Say good bye to the open space forever. Santa Ynez will look like Thousand Oaks in ten years if the powers that be allow the money eyed developers to chip away at the land in the name of "whatever". The Chumash should know better.

@504, this is 499. What makes you think I'm a conservative? I'm not. That's the point of being liberal. Also, I don't think you can compare the two laws. One relates to endangering an entire species of wild animals for a small body part. The other is raised for food, and is used for such as 550 so eloquently points out. So, maybe you should get off your high horses and leave the SB bubble every now and then. You might discover other cultures do things differently than the California legislature tells us to.

The best routine for the homeless I ever have seen was years ago in Wash. D.C. They would routinely sweep these types from the sidewalks, send them to a rehabilitation center in northern VA about 25 miles away & treat them til recovered from whatever problem they had. Once healthy and sober, they would be offered a ticket to any other city in the U.S. and off they would go. Voila! the streets of Washington were free of beggars and drunks! Maybe it's time here in S.B.!

Sorry, but when the end result of an animal's short life is to have it's head cut off and its feathers plucked and its guts ripped out and its parts dissected to feed us, it is entirely silly to require "humane" treatment up until that time. And the term "humane" should only be ascribed to humans.

Gosh wish I didn't have to trap a mom cat and her kittens this weekend. She is under a neighbors house, and I know the other neighbor feeds the mom cat. The rule is no unfixed pets, so why does she keep letting it have litter after litter after litter. These poor kittens have to fend for themselves. Another neighbor just told me he had a kitten under his house for a week after he bug bombed the underneath of the house. The mom cat is friendly to the people that live in that house but is wild towards everyone else. Yea feed the cat but let all the kittens suffer and die. Sometimes I think people are brainless.

514, right on. When did we get the idea that it was now acceptable for men to not work, get drunk all day, be entitled to meals and shelter, and then let them panhandle us? Why do some factions shame others who think enabling might not be the right thing to do here? Why do some people think Santa Barbara must assume responsibility for solving the homeless problem for the country? They tell us we must provide shelter and housing for anyone that's been here one day after arriving from somewhere else. Why do we fight for the rights of the homeless to be homeless? Why do we tolerate antisocial and criminal behavior in this city, zone homeless problems into someone else's neighborhood, and consider ourselves progressive for doing so?

Tyler is a good kid that had a car accident that ended up killing a woman and he will have to live with that horror for the rest of his life. Who of us hasn't sped, picked up our phone, or done something we shouldn't have while driving? He pled guilty at his trial and has done everything asked of him. Edhat at its best is a wonderful/helpful place to post and receive valuable and quick information. It would be nice to be able to get that information without having to plow through people's exchange of "humor" and sarcasm. Maybe there should be two links on each submission - one whereby people who have something of value and responsive to the topic to click on and a second where people who wish to contribute their humor/sarcasem go to. Readers can choose whether they read (1) helpful/responsive information; (2) "humor" and even (3) where we can already (if we choose) read Nanny censored material (or maybe 2 and 3 can be combined).

"THE homeless." Is there really such a thing as one label fits all? Some may be on the streets as a way out of society but that number must be pretty small. There are people with mental illnesses that self-medicate with substances that only make matters worse. Addiction is a disease. Most people with a mental illness not on their meds have exhausted the help of their families who have no recourse in caring for "adult" family members with mental illness. This is a complex problem. Why are they in Santa Barbara? Location, location, location. Who wants to be homeless in Bakersfield? If you have to live outside, this is a pretty good place to be.

The County took these revenues from the Goleta area for years and gave little back. It was an inside source of humor for the administrators, how little Goleta wanted cityhood while being ripped off. In order to finally receive any where their fair share it looks like Goleta cityhood advocates had to make compromises. In the long run Goleta is way better off. Noleta beware.

The point of shoving people along is to send the message this is not a condoned lifestyle in this town. Their job is to find one where it is. Unfortunately the rest of the country knows Santa Barbara is the one who condones and supports this lifestyle from: ---- the wealthy who like to keep it out of their own backyards, ----to the laid back who are easily intimidated and can't say no to their implied threats, ---to misguided progressives who don't mind spending other people's money for their own psychic brownie points ......bad karma in this town about this issue because not checking it has turned this town into a nightmare magnet. Don't let yourself get scolded by the few to do things that are counter-productive. SB needs a 12 step program that teaches them to say no and stop enabling poor behavior choices. Start with the book: " When I Say No, I Feel Guilty

So they had to pay taxes 293! We all do, would you call a lottery winner unlucky because they have to pay tax on their winnings? Yes their property taxes would increase if they re purchased but that 200 grand will cover that nicely. They sold an uninhabitable house for easily 25% above market value with no realtor fees in a down market, cry me a river. I watched the report on keyt (uninformative as ever) and still have no idea what their complaint is.

Funny how the same conservatives who relished in a food law that was seen by some as anti-Asian (the shark fin ban) are opposed to a ban on foie gras, largely eaten by rich whites, as an example of "the nanny state." I'm for the ducks and the sharks. Most human beings need animal protein to survive, but that's no reason to be cruel or wasteful as we go about it.

Foie gras! Now I'll eat more of it just out of protest to our "nanny state". For those of you that like all these bans and overzealous legislation, something you like will no doubt be unnecessarily banned or restricted soon. That's the problem with banning things. When will it stop? BTW, this issue has been completely over-hyped incorrectly by the animal-rights crowd. Do some research. Feeding tubes are not uncomfortable or painful for the animals.

I'll add the next voice of frustration to the long list. SBALAX's points are very well taken, but my experiences with United in March (and ongoing) have been unimaginably poor. My main complaint is that they do not respond, you can't get anyone to handle a complaint. Currently I am trying to reach their "customer service" people--who their agents don't even have an internal phone number for--via my travel agency AAA, but not even AAA can get a response out of United. The bottom line is there has been a decision made at the top to make customer service United's lowest priority, and all we can do is refuse to tolerate it and fly elsewhere.

It's a poorly designed survey. For ex., I get to the beach by walking, biking, or car, yet they only gave me one choice on that question. They also don't give you the choice of $0 for how much you're willing to pay, so I just didn't answer that question, because $0 is my answer. Then I reinforced that in the comments at the end. Take the survey. If most of those answering it refuse to answer their bogus question about how much you're willing to pay, and put NOTHING, FREE, or $0 in the comments, they'll get the message. We already pay for access to the beach and mountains through out higher rents and mortgages. Enough! Downsize govt if needed, but I'll be damned if I'll pay a fee to walk on the beach!

Why isn't there a homeless problem on Coast Village Road (that I'm aware of)? Is it somehow not allowed? I'll bet if the transients were trucked to Coast Village Road, the Upper East Side and the Riviera, somehow the priority of dealing with decreasing the transients/homeless would become a much bigger priority to the city.

I agree with 405. The survey seems to be designed to find out which beaches we use, how often we go, what we do there and how much we would pay. Sounds like they want to know how important the beaches are to people and figure out the max amount of money they can extract from us. I just wrote a comment at the bottom and gave my zip code. All they need to know is that people don't support this fee and won't re-elect those who do.

Granted, the clusters of flowers are a bit unusual, but each individual flower is unmistakably Solanum. Further googling reveals that Solanum mauritanium is native to South America and is a widespread invasive weed that outcompetes native plants here. Keeping one ornamental specimen under control in a garden shouldn't cause problems if you don't let its seeds get away.

I'm glad we in Santa Barbara don't roll up the drawbridges and lock the gates to the city at night. As if that were possible. Santa Barbara has just too limited affordable housing stock to support all the workers we need for our service industry economy. So unless our governmental leaders become visionaries that plan and implement excellent public transportation to Ventura, Lompoc, and the Santa Ynez Valley, get used to this sort of gridlock. It's not going to get better in the years ahead, only worse. A big thank you to commuting workers for servicing our fair city of Santa Barbara.

We are an "Ex-Con" family -- one of us worked for Continental for over 40 years and now works for s-CO (subsidiary Continental) of UCH (United Continental Holdings). Most of the problems that customers (and employees) are experiencing are coming from the switch to a single computer system. United did not own Apollo so the switch was made to Sonic/Shares, the Continental owned system. If you get a former Continental employee there should be few problems. United employees are having a tough time adapting to the different system in spite of quite a bit of training and tech support. Hopefully things will smooth out with time. From our side of the fence we see things becoming more and more "Continental" than United both on the ground and in the air.

The original poster only seems concerned with teaching the rotton eggs a lesson without suing the HELL out of everyone and their mothers involved the cops, DA, Hope Ranch Patrol and whomever else wants to go.. She only wants real justice. Good Luck with that one she wants her kid to see that justice works, which it doesn't. Maybe at one time it did. It's too bad that not even the da, the cops no one seems to care until they are being sued. I look at my own experience of being teased and abused for years and years and finely striking back. Fracturing one peers skull, and putting a metal plate in another taunters head. If things would have been done right those things would never have happened. But no body does anything right, they just talk about it. Look at our country today..What a mess I'm surprised there isn't another war between the states we are one messed up society. I sure hope her kid don't end up like me a drunkard in and out of rehab most of his life, a failure until middle age so angry at the hand delt one can't see straight. What happened to people in our country don't they care about the children anymore?

That's very interesting--at first I thought the flower umbel must be from a different plant, that you were teasing us mixing two plants together. The foliage looks so much like a brugmansia--the angel's trumpet plant, a member of the solanaceae (nightshade) family. But the flower, as seedlady said, is not at all typical nightshade (think tomato, potato, eggplant, peppers). Virginia Hayes at Lotusland might have be able to help. Any hints as to where it came from? Did it just show up?

Becky, you may work in an ammo factory but your information is wrong. Live ammo are exactly "small bombs." A bomb also has a detonator like a primer. It's true that black powder was often useless when wet, but modern powders and primers have a good chance of working at least when they dry out. A piece of shell or concrete can kill you just as sure as a bullet. You should call the police back and tell them to take the stuff and dispose of it properly. You might call the local national guard base and see what they say also.

412. You're correct - we have dear Ronald Reagan to thank for closing those facilities for the mentally ill, which were far from perfect but at least the residents were protected from all the sneering and self-righteous disgust we see here. Why don't we open a sanctuary in the old Miramar hotel while they're figuring out what to do with that? We could house the homeless and the mentally ill now in jail (current alternative housing for them) and then keep the real criminals in jail longer? Everyone's off the streets except the "nice" people who belong there.

Methinks the aggressive defense is being mounted by an insurance company, not the young man and his family. Not being forced to testify against one's self is not only a Constitutional right but a right that can be traced back to Jewish law long before the birth of Christ. Plaintiff's counsel has more than enough arrows in his quiver to obtain relief for his clients. However, it's good to see a news story in support of our tort system, rather than the usual stuff about hot coffee from McDonald's -- which is also an aggressive defense continued to be mounted by insurance companies.

I'm a 1k flyer and generally get treated ok. The folks at the back of the bus seem to get crapped on regularly. And I can only imagine the horror of being a United employee or retiree if this is how they treat customers. Delta is probably the best domestic airline for service, but I stopped flying them when they cancelled the direct SBA-SLC flight. I find the United iPhone App to be fantastic. But anything is better than the POS United website they implemented after the Continental merger.

297265: There is such a sign by Carls Junior on Milpas - it seems to make no difference. People apparently still give money. There should be other signs at all the exits, especially by the Quinientos exit where daily handouts are asked for (and given) for "jokes". The best Trader Joe's could do for the neighborhood is keep their carts on the property instead of littering the neighborhood - but that's another issue. COMMENT 297410: What changes are you proposing for the New Beginnings, Safe Parking program? I would like to know and perhaps you would write an op ed here about that? I hope that Edhat is open to publishing that? (Fwiw, I think it is an excellent and worthy program, but, not a participant in it, I don't know its details. I appreciate the retrospectives but why do some of you begrudge the question/er? Are we so suspicious of our fellow posters to assume their curiosity is driven by jealousy and/or intent to be unruly? I am continually struck by the very uptight and angry tone of many edhatters. I guess, if you're angry at the world, this is cheap way to unload your agressions. I'll at least admit that snipey behavior on community blogs makes me angry. Ironically, folks who shower anger on other posters for no good reason are likely the same folks who seem to have plenty to say about what's wrong with the world. Get a mirror.

Sixty-five years ago when I was in second grade we lived in Hope Ranch Annex on Arboleda Rd. Hope Ranch patrolman Baker's son was my classmate at San Roque School and their daughter was a year behind us. The Bakers lived in a two-story house on Nogal. Mr. Baker patrolled at night in his Ford. (I sense most of the action he found was couples parked to "make out.") He was an avid ham radio guy and had his radio equipment in a room attached to the old garage behind their house. Around that time the Bakers son Chucky who was around three died of a brain tumor. Their old home and ours are both gone now. On the west side of the creek behind Arboleda Rd. there were lemon orchards all the way to Goleta. When the trees flowered the wonderful smell of lemon blossoms was everywhere. It was a wonderful neighborhood for kids!

As a child in the 1950's, I recall a large government facility that housed hundreds of mentally ill patients. It looked like a college dormitory complex with many buildings, large park areas with many benches, all fenced in. People wandered around inside, sat on benches, talked to others, or talked to themselves. By the early 1960s, that facility was closed due to lack of funding. I believe we are watching the results of not funding mental health hospitals/institutions. This same lack of funding for mental institutions plays out now in many communities nationwide. On the plus side, I believe the more intelligent homeless population members choose SB.

Bear in mind, I've been harassed constantly.... Yet unlike the freeloaders we see so often; I work, I pick up other homeless people's trash. I provided assistance to tourists. i cooperate in all police matters, and I've been to city council to describe the very same thing you're discussing here. When the police come rolling up, for some reason they've got their sights on me.... Why is that? Maybe Capt Whitham was right when he told me "It's all about money." With that being said.... I do appreciate your efforts to bring this matter to light. I hope one day I will be able to meet with you all and ask you to sign my petition to reform the "safe parking" program! It's my honest opinion that none of this will be accomplished with the current status of city hall. Maybe we can get "Hope & Change" right next time around! THANK YOU EDHAT!

Just another way to make us pay for something that is already ours..... I am going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the rents collected from the commercial endeavors present at some of the beaches were originally meant to offset the maintenance of the parking lots.... I'm not sure what rent is paid, for instance the Boathouse at Hendry's, but I am willing to bet it is substantial! Litter patrol looks like a Community service program.... Time to start looking at the people that come up with these schemes... Fire them and budget issue is resolved!

Once a fee is instituted , then the raising of that fee has no public input factor . They will systematically raise it (again with no public review or input) . Many folks are surprised when they learn that day use at Jalama has been raised to $10. At Jalama the no parking signs along the road begin at first sight of water( couple miles from park entrance). You can expect similar action near these proposed entry fee parks. We need to stop this boondoggle now before the county wrests beach access away from us. Don't forget they will limit our entry times as part of this lousy deal.

The beach parking has always been free, to change that due to the fact the County and State cannot manage their own house is wrong. The elected officials locally and at the state level bought into the hype of the real estate boom and overspent even though there was ample warnings to be cautious of the artificial market. They are no better than the execs at Countrywide and WAMU to take the right to free parking which has existed for generations due to their mismanagement is criminal they need to clean up their house before coming to the public on this.

My mistake was accusing anyone of racism or believing the address of the offender had anything to do with this situation obviously that made some assume I was trying to gain sympathy. I did speak with the officer that took our report and he said the DA "screwed him over too" he is going to contact the probation department to try to have something done. Of course I did need to let him know our intention is to contact a lawyer and have them evaluate whether we were treated fairly. The asst DA assigned to this case called and said they wanted to file simple battery charges. When I said I did not agree with that he hung up on me. I found out the SBSO has not even finished their report and investigation so how in the world can the DA even know what the appropriate charges are right now? The boy that did this is 5'9" and 160 lbs at least. He beat up someone that is about 80 lbs. These kids are 15 and 16. No matter who is involved this was just wrong!
