@478 has it right. What this man did was wrong, no matter how drunk the women were. Certainly better education (from home, school & community) for boys to treat girls with respect, and to teach all kids to not abuse alcohol or drugs couldn't hurt.

If its the shame on crowd, they are paid picketers hired by a union out of Camarillo who pays them min. wage with no benefits. That union has been pretty much disavowed by the other local labor unions for both tactics and at times targets for their "actions" in both north and south county.

SB's New Airport |
2012-07-11 10:45 PM |

MTNDRIVER: I got my pilot's license and ratings through the UCSB flying club in the 70's, and flew privately owned aircraft tied down next to the terminal for years. Security for commercial air carriers is federal law, although we've had incidents that demonstrate that in practice it doesn't always provide security . Privately owned aircraft aren't subject to the same TSA regs - I think it would be difficult to get an explosive device on a commercial carrier, for instance, but I don't know if it would be difficult for a private pilot to fly over a commercial carrier and drop one or fly into one. Based on my info from news sources, though, I think people with connections to terrorist org's walking or driving across the US/Mexico border could be more important than risks related to aviation - other than airline transport pilots with mental health issues, at least. In any case, it seems to me that successful terrorist attacks rely on the element of surprise, so any high-profile security is an oxymoron. So far, the new terminal is as hostile and uninviting as the new Cottage Hospital. I hope there's a 2nd story restaurant with a view of the runways - a great opportunity for people 4 feet tall and under to fantasize about flying one of those things out there. I haven't seen the new airport, but I'm sure glad George Rhoad's kinetic ball sculpture is returning. I miss the old terminal a lot, but primarily due to emotional memories - hitting birds on takeoff on 2 occasions, both unavoidable "acts of God", then having ATC frequently ask if God wanted me to fly that day for months following the incidents, jamming the stick back during run-up in an aerobatic taildragger and hearing an anguished scream from an old friend in the back who has fathered no children since then (or prior to this), etc. Things change - the city of Santa Barbara will forever be stuck with "mission style" stucco and red tile roofs because this type of architecture was what Pearle Chase saw standing following the 2 major earthquakes that leveled most of SB in the 20's, although it's now more reminiscent of Orange County tract developments than SB history. I think a lot of good effort has been spent on the new airport terminal, and I'm happy that most of the comments here support that effort.

And at least one of the "patients" in need was a healthy senior official; Cottage should supply the flight manifests for all helicopter flights/landings. This has nothing to do with whether I or my family or you or your family or compassion, but obeying the rules and regulations that they agreed to abide by. If I lived near an airport, as 346, I would expect air traffic; if I lived in a residential area with streets near a hospital, I would expect ambulances and police; if I lived next to a highway, I'd expect traffic noises; if I lived in a semi-rural area, I'd expect owls and other wildlife. Not, then not. Perhaps if Cottage can not/will not use its Goleta facility or Earl Warren and shuttle, it should buy out the neighbors or reimburse them for loss of market value for their houses. That way there would not be the continuing complaints.

I'm the OP and my family has owned a house in Old Town since 1994, so yes, we pay taxes AND we live locally and have to deal with spill-over from traffic at this intersection every day. Yes, it can and does back up nearly to Hollister. I do plan my trips out to avoid lunch time and rush hour traffic as it can take many, many changes of lights to get through. I have been in the habit of taking Hollister to Los Carneros during busy times, but I guess that will be out as everyone else will, too. What would really help local residents is if the City would press forward on the plan to put a pedestrian/cyclist tunnel under the freeway along San Jose Creek. If there was a safer alternative to the Fairview overpass/intersection many of us wouldn't get into our cars at all.

I can also recommend Lenz. Although I was told that the poison they use in their traps would not harm a dog (and they gave me printed info that indicated that) I, believing they were right about large dogs, but caring about smaller animals, insisted on traps without poison. They placed traps, large ones of the type you can see around the waterfront, around my lower east side city lot, checked them weekly, caught three or four/week and after more than a month of this, the extensive rat population was knocked back and I have not had the problems this summer (so far) that I had last. Also, the spring traps kill instantaneously; the poison is relatively slow-acting, decoagulating, and rats, as well as bobcats and dogs and owls... suffer. I'd recommend giving Lenz a call and having them come by and giving an estimate --- and I also recommend telling them clearly that you do _not_ want the traps with poison used.

Harsh - harsh - harsh! People, settle down! Yes, she drank way too much and did a very irresponsible thing. If it were part of a pattern of bad behavior, then have at her. But she just exercised poor judgment once - and is paying a significant price for it. But for the grace of you-know-who this could have been me once or twice. I am not justifying anything - just saying this is not calculated criminal behavior, just warped judgment brought on by too much booze. And if I were that wasted I'd probably look and sound pretty bad in a video too. I hope she learns and rebounds from this ordeal. I wish her well.

Airports are for Air Travel, they are not shopping malls or hotel lobbies. The new airport is terrific. I travel at least 1 time per week out of the airport and the improvements were very necessary. Gate Areas are spacious, restrooms and food service are a welcome site after security. Jetways are also appreciated in the rainy season. Every airport out there has become less "folksy" because of security issues. The design of this airport is welcoming and I am proud to pick up my guests there who are also impressed. No one likes change especially in SB

New airport is spacious, but expecting more flights to more destinations seems unlikely. New airport seems generic, lacks charm, though it seems efficient. Arriving bags come through a narrow area, one can't see the bag handlers - seems impersonal. It was inevitable a newer terminal would be built - it seems though a little more gracious style wouldn't have added to the high cost. We're all paying for the airport whether it seems like it or not.

Seems to me that a lot of the complaints about the design of the new terminal have to do with things that are related to security--food outlets just for passengers, areas for meeting passengers not friendly, no place for the public to enjoy themselves, etc. I'm sure there were design requirements that had to be met in that regard that we know nothing about. No US airport now that I know of lets "the public" come in and shop or eat. It's a shame, but that's the world we live in at present. That said, I preferred the old terminal, but really for style reasons, not convenience. I loved it that it was funky and not super high-tech, friendly, with a small town SB feel. It had charm, character. I could have lived with it forever! But I've flown out of the new one three times now, and flown back to it, and it works fine. I love it that there are bathrooms near the gates, and that you can get COFFEE after going through security (while waiting for your late United flight, as someone else mentioned). It still feels like a small town airport. And I like the mosaics and the tilework, and the look of the front of the terminal. I've had no trouble finding people I'm picking up, or having people find me when I've flown in. It was bound to happen, and I think they did a good job.

I personally know Dr. Ronzone and find her to be highly motivated and competent in a very difficult job. Her personality can be abrasive and I can understand how she might rub some people, including teachers, the wrong way. I do not know Mr. Ezell but know many people with ADD and/or with depression. They are real and challenging problems. When they are effectively managed people suffering from them can achieve anything. I don't know what happened here and so I will reserve judgment.

The SB sections of the 101 are probably the worst maintained roads in the Caltrans system. Roadside litter is picked up and the bags stay in full view for weeks after. Some sections are thickly littered (look from the Las Positas on ramp north through Turnpike. Montecito area is totally trashed. Our local officials need to get on Caltrans to do a better job keeping our highway litter free. granted, the litter shouldn't be there in the first place but it is and Caltrans has a responsibility to taxpayers to maintain our highways. I do appreciate all Adopt a Highway groups. Now, Caltrans, do your part on the medians and in those areas not adopted.

It appears the airport is fine for those who use it. But it is terrible for those trying to pick someone up. You walk in to the main foyer and are just dumbfounded by the total lack of obvious information - no easy immediate access to the flight info - it is hidden on a side wall. No obvious meeting place. No indication where passengers might be coming out. No place to sit where you can observer incoming passengers. No lighting where you can sit if you have to wait which offers no sight lines to any incoming passengers or information. It is 100% awful for those picking up incoming passengers. What it will do is deter vagrants from coming in and squatting all day long. It is a very hostile environment to welcome anyone to sit and stay a while, even those waiting for incoming planes.

Not one person on here has blamed the victim .....we all agree this guy is a monster, but the discussion now is how we as women can protect ourselves from ever being in a situation like this where we are vulnerable to rape or worse. We have to realize the world is full of these guys and when guys are drunk/drugged they sometimes do terrible things(not excusing the behavior, just stating a fact.) Let's stay sober enough to make sure we get home safely with trusted friends or by taxi and not ever put ourselves in jeopardy. Don't trust anyone you don't know well and don't accept a ride from a person who portrays himself as a Mr. nice guy who only wants to give you a ride home.

That is so, so sad! A good cat and a couple of electronic zappers can take care of a LOT of rats, and the cat shelters often know of semi-feral cats who would be willing to take on the job. Please, people, don't use anything around the yard that you would not be willing to eat yourself!

After having my dog get poisoned last summer, and seeing just how sick she was and how expensive it was to pull her through it (she did survive), I am against poisoning. Yet, we also have a rat over population in our yard. We bought an electronic rat trap at OSH this weekend, and snagged 2 rats in 2 days. At almost $50 it is expensive, but it is also the most effective trap we've used.

There was no better place to arrive back home than the old terminal. Those who want LAX or SFO glitz are free to relocate to areas that better suit their refined tastes. The new one is not as hateful as I thought it was going to be but I think TSA had more to do with needing a larger facility than any of us air travellers or airlines just itching to give us more flights. The facilities were fine until TSA took over all that space to make us safe or whatever it is they are suppose to be doing. For everyone waiting for the direct flights to Vegas, Hawaii or anywhere other than a hub, don't hold your breath.

Glad they finally caught her. Celebrities, even if they are only a cook, sometimes start feeling above the law. Too bad they didn't have the immediate mug shot, bet she didn't look quite so cute. Strange that should even be commented on, if she had killed someone or been in a horrible accident that cute face wouldn't exist anymore.

This guy definitely planned this burglary in that he brought a 65 lb. rock to smash in the door window. When he discovered that the door had a double cylinder deadbolt, he was able to lift this rock at least chest high to systematically smash out the large window next to the door. A close up, slo-mo viewing of the security video does show he also dressed for his brief moment in front of the cameras. Note the camo pants, neatly bloused into what appear to be combat boots, all accessorized with with pro burglar hood with eye socket cutouts & long sleeve, dark jacket & gloves. Yep, "as seen on TV" or in the cartoons. I agree this chump had been to the store prior to the hit, but really wonder how much he knows about bikes based upon what he took while the alarms were blaring & the police & owner were being notified. Yep, smart, really smart. Here's to enjoying seeing this idiot's mug & name on EdHat in the very near future.

What is wrong with you people??? He is a serial rapist, a CRIMINAL. Stop blaming the victims!!! If a man goes out and gets drunk, is it okay for someone to steal his wallet because he didn't bother to stay "sober and alert"? Is it okay if someone steals his car because he wasn't taking "responsibility" for his keys? If he passes out, is it okay for someone to physically assault him because he's not "in control of his faculties"? Of course not! Criminal behavior is a crime, regardless of the state of mind of the victim.

Considering they only just redid the Fairview overpass a few years ago (10? 15?) I doubt they'll be redesigning it anytime soon. The bend when you're going from the overpass toward Calle Real is horrid and it seems the lights are never timed right to keep traffic flowing smoothly. Seems odd that CalTrans is closing Fairview at 101 when all the work done will be up at Los Carneros? Anyone have any more information about why that is?

465: Components are components, as I stated they don't have serial numbers like the frames. He stole a top of the line frame, which is a tough sell due to its red flag, but it has the bottom of the barrel components. The hardest thing to sell is the frame, whereas top of the line components could be gone this afternoon at the right price. What I'm trying to say is... There are more people looking for a good deal on top of the line components than a good deal on bottom of the line components. People who buy top of the line components generally have the cash to burn, and if a good deal comes along, will bite. These types of "brand new used" parts sales are common wish part takeoffs on new bikes.

As women we have to realize we are vulnerable to rape and violence especially when we are too drunk to make good decisions. There are guys who when they drink become monsters.... alcohol and drugs can change a persons personality and that guy that seemed pretty nice at the beginning of the evening can change when the booze and or drugs kick in. Be smart, be careful and no matter what stay sober and alert when you are out there, don't give anyone an opportunity to violate you in any way. We do have the responsibility to do all in our power to stay safe and that includes being cautious about how much we drink and who we go home with.

As a general rule of thumb, the more money they have to spend on advertising to sell you something, the less you need (or, if you understood the cost, want) it. Private money is spending huge sums to convince us that our government, intended by our Founders to give us control over our own lives, should be strangled. Just let those who sell this message run our world. The question: How smart are we?

I don't welcome this closure either... I bike los carneros every morning and evening to work/school, and can foresee a bit of a danger doing so in the upcoming year. I really wish they would use this time to fix the fairview overpass, its a terrible design really. They could completely eliminate the intersection by the 76 station if they essentially cut across the diagonal and met the existing portion of the overpass at the top. The funky bend is what really slows the traffic and makes it such a mess. This would also allow them to go around all the businesses by big brand tire/mcdonalds, and hopefully improve flow. Ideally, the overpass would be a straight line to the hollister area of fairview, but many businesses are already in place in that area.

What's suprising about these comments is you all had such a critial eye regarding the new terminal that you failed to notice they're rebuilding the old terminal right next to the new one. It hasn't disappeared, it was dismantled and moved. The old restaurant will return when it's rebuilt. I've flown out of the new termial a few times since it's been open and have no complaints about the access to bathrooms (large ones with many stalls for us ladies) and the access to food and drink while United delays flights. What I'm really excited about is that they're building 5 more gates so hopefully we will have more destinations to fly too! I like the new airport and I'm happy they're making it larger too.

The best pizza I've ever had is Barones in Van Nuys. I can fully admit that their style isn't for everyone, but they use the best ingredients. I could easily eat it every meal for a week if I lived close enough to do so....mmmm Second best would be Ivo in Rome. If you ever travel to Italy, it's a must have.

Our first night in Chicago, our friends there took us to "Pizzeria Uno" for deep dish pizza. We had one huge iron frying pan brought to our table with two different halves. The best! (And the restaurant validated our parking ticket for the garage across the street, saving us some 20 bucks!)

I went out there to pick up a friend's Mother, who I had not met before, and it was awful. I got there early, with her name on a hand-held small sign, and waited. I asked United people where she would be coming in after her plane landed and they told me, all passengers would be coming down those stairs.... Well, NOT true. The Mother was waiting outside and said she never came down any stairs... ~~~~~~~~~ Plus, while I was waiting I wanted to check-out the outside sitting area and I could barely get the door open.... waayyy too heavy, with NO automatic "open" button for the handicapped!! ~~~~~~~~ Then, the alarm went off and the workers couldn't get it turned off. ~~~~ In the meantime, lots of Police, Security and other airport employees started coming.... They told me the alarms go off ALL the time, for no apparent reason.... Hated my experience there.

Of course DARE was a failure, thats not the point. If you want no nanny state, abolish all laws, all forms of government period and see what happens. I believe people should be self reliant, but take no problem with teaching kids supplementary to what their parents teach them (who might be completely crazy btw) what is right and wrong in our society. This is not an issue related to California, nor the United States alone. Stop using the word nanny state to push your partisan agenda on an issue that is not partisan to begin with.

And glad the photos brought back memories of horse riding and of Col McMenemy. We are very fortunate to have this area preserved thanks to him and other more recent generous donors. This loop hike is fun because of how you can go on pieces of eight different trails in less than six miles!

I doubt 90% of people in town would actually recognize her if she did run into them. I did hear the people asking for her insurance on the video, my guess and just one opinion, they may have been taping it to protect themselves and document her condition.

The airport's use of space is dismal to grim, the signage even worse. It's lighting is poor, no place to sit and can't even figure out where anyone will come or go without struggling, making bad choices or having to ask someone. What were they thinking? Did they actually track out how people would use this airport? It has zero access or amenities for those coming to pick people up, as if they never even thought this would happen. I would call it a total disaster in planning. Plus it looks like a crushed milk carton for a tower. The parking kiosk is sheer torture to figure out and bring your own flashlight because you cannot read the instructions at night. Total joke. An embarrassment and the people who came in on the flight couldn't figure it out either as they had to walk all over tarnation to get from point A to point B, even though they looked like they were initially close to each other.

Why colonial benches, wrong look and feel for this town. The seats aren't much to look at but aren't bad for sitting in. When it comes to a seat that is easy to clean and keep sanitary while being comfortable I think they did well. Same with the carpet. Overall a much easier airport to travel in and out of especially for business travelers. Never say the city doesn't do anything to help business.

I like the new airport a lot. The old airport was better in one way only. It looked better from a distance because it was quaint and cute. The new airport is better in so many ways. -No moldy gross carpet and walls. -Infinitely more comfortable to wait for flights. -Way better baggage claim. Inside, out of the elements. -Big enough for the volume. So much so that new flights are being added. We just need a cell phone lot and it would be perfect.

Sounds like the guy isn't much of a bike person. Tarmac is a nice bike, but apex being bottom of the sram line, he won't get much for the parts. Secteur isn't a bad bike, but not top of the heap either. If I were the thief, I'd go straight for the tarmac with the red/DA gruppo. The components would be worth far more than the frame itself. I honestly had no problem with the new airport. I've flown both many times and still feel its got a much more small town vibe than places like LAX. We flew out of Santa Barbara to LAX and then to Kauai recently, and even Kauai had an airport that rivaled ours in size. By a significant amount, I might add. Complaining about going up stairs and going back down again? Really? Just because carpets use squares does not mean they are "cheap". Interface sells squares as it makes more sense from a modular perspective for office buildings. They are by no means cheap, and were/are one of my favorite companies from a quality/ethics standpoint.

The new airport more then saddens me, I get so upset when I think what a great opportunity we had to build a beautiful airport and instead we have that building. 1. It was a tradition of my family to go have dinner and watch the planes come in and go out....DONE the restaurant is for ticketed passengers only and has no windows to the tarmac. 2. CHEAP - how much was spent on painting beams? Yet the carpet is the cheapest you can find, carpet squares! The seats in the waiting area are ugly and CHEAP the place looks straight off the pages of a KMart or Sears catalog. 3. Founding your way out when you arrive past the ugly, very hard, I guess time to enjoy the ugly cheap. 4. Love walking around the "mound" with kids, luggage & all to get from Baggage to curb. 5. Moving the old Building...dumb Have more but no space!

What I see & speculate: He knows the shop, what he wanted and went straight to it. Fully covered for the cameras. He's been there before, probably earlier the same day. Maybe he dropped a bike off earlier for service and you'll see him back in a few days playing dumb about the news. He may start the conversation by asking about one of the bikes that was stolen like, "I was looking at that Tarmac the other day..." You know him. Sleeves make me think he could be covering identifiable marks like tattoos. Pants tucked into tall boots, shirt tucked in so I would suspect a military background. Reservist? All speculation though. Every bike shop I've worked in have been robbed multiple times. Time for security gates, but you have a nice camera. Good luck! 326 - The code on all bikes is the Serial Number which is included in the post (S/N).

Anyone from Chicago knows the casserole stuff is for tourists anyways, really Chicagoans know thin-crust (aka bar pizza, tavern pizza, Chicago style thin and Midwestern thin) is where it's at. It really is the king of pizza styles in Chicago. Thin and crisp, lots of mozz and sauce, and of course no Chicago pizza is complete without some house made sausage. The fennel laced sausage of Chicago is really awesome stuff!

He was an amazing, extremely creative and intelligent instructor when my daughter was in his homeroom class! He impressed us with his love for science and math and how much he impressed our scientific girl. She was so sad when he took time off work for personal reasons. I don't know the story but hope that things work out for him. Maybe he needs to go to another school that will appreciate him? He really was amazing :)

Technology Upgrade Fee |
2012-07-11 01:26 PM |

"Less taxes, more services!" If we prohibit the government from raising taxes while also demanding more services, what are the solutions? One strategy is to charge "user fees." Extreme example: If you call the cops, they bill you. Can't pay, they arrest you and then charge for that AND the jail. Seems fair until it happens to you. So here we have "evil" elected city government charging a user fee for database conversion rather than covering it under the general fund - fair until it happened to you. Maybe at some point citizens will remember that we're all in this together, and then we can begin a return to civil society. Until then we'll have people angrily rejecting all taxes while raging against elected government for dwindling services and increasing user fees.

Geez. Complaints complaints complaints. Don't some get tired of complaining all the time? Either it's costing taxpayers too much to rescue people or it's too noisy to rescue people as it disturbs their TV viewing. Where's the compassion for life and well being? Mid-day helicopters should not prompt complaints. Period. Don't try to diagnose anything over the internet either. Sprained ankle? How do you know if she was in shock and to what extent? How do you know if she lost conciousness/ heart stopped/ O.D. etc? There are all kinds of possible scenarios that the public would NEVER know even after the fact that may prompt the helicopter ride. I live by the airport with helicopters & airplanes going over at ALL hours of day and night. Really, it's no big deal. You get used to it. Please have patience for those patients in need. Thank you :)

Verizon did this - added a small unsubstantiated fee - and got caught. I agree $1.44 seems like not worth bothering about - and yet it matters enough that we're all writing about it! The main reason to question such things, like in the Verizon case, is that if you get $1.44 from each person - well, 100,000 people brings a company an extra $144,000 bucks. That said, I'm guessing this fee will be explained and make some sense. And if it goes to the city (as 331 says it will), well, that's good for all of us.

Another thing that struck me about this article is the so called 'mutual friends.' In most all the cases it was these mutual 'friends' that talked the victim out of reporting this guy. This is a note to everyone. Don't protect abusers just because you have a 'friendship' with them or even just know them. When you do you become part of the abuse whether you realize it or not. In a way they are all accessories to the crime and that is also true of abusive teachers, parents, relatives etc.

Taboo story. Least of all we worry about this mans fate, but instead, we should care about preventing this type of situation in the first place. Being guilty does not prevent the issue. Solving a problem doesn't work by punishment. Accountability is where it starts. Young ladies should know NOT to get drunkin' smashed and end up in a foreign bed. Putting someone in jail does not take away the burden of feeling betrayed or assulted. Prevention now! And personally? These stories are riddled with holes that any good defense attorney can mutilate. In bed with your boyfriend and a bad guy? Then assult? Then you asked for a ride by bad guy? Boyfriend does what? What? "See ya man, thanks for the ride man!" Whatever....

Here are more fun statistics. Only 20% of homeless people get welfare. Crimes committed by homeless are marginally higher than the general population and are on the decline. Violent crimes AGAINST homeless people are sharply on the rise. Also, welfare is a stimulus. I dont have time to give an economics lesson but $1 of welfare gets spent an average of 8 times. Increasing the economy by $8. $1 of tax cuts etc... to businesses gets spent on average 3 times. Where is stimulus money better spent?

We've been reforming the way services are provided for years now, 295. Billions of dollars in spending cuts, workforce training and rehabilitation programs cut entirely, and more. All in the face of a terrible recession that isn't getting better fast enough. At any rate, I believe the most recent statistic is that something like 3/4 of welfare recipients in California are children age 18 or younger whose parents are no longer welfare eligible, and California is one of only four or five states which offers welfare in this manner.

No Dillydally, it's serious. Take all of the homeless services away. People do come to Santa Barbara because of our extensive services and subsidized housing. Santa Barbara should not be a welfare state on the backs of hardworking people who have trouble affording to live here because of it. I'll repeat the statistics until I'm blue in the face, but California has 10% of the national population and one-third (33% that is) of the welfare cases in the U.S.. We need to draw a line in the sand. Either reform the way services are provided, or get rid of them.

Actually, I find that the 154 route is comparable in time to the 101 unless you get stuck behind a gravel truck. If you can keep it at 60 mph through most of it, the route is so much shorter that you can meet or beat someone that has been on the 101 at 70 mph the whole time. All bets are off if a bunch of people from Santa Maria jump onto the 154 to try and avoid the Gaviota bottleneck. It would be very interesting to see the report evaluating the alternatives for construction to see why they picked the one the would be the most inconvenient to the Lompoc/Santa Maria commuters. Remember this the next time Caltrans is asking for more money through bond issues on the ballot.

A couple months ago a woman was helo transported, and all she had was a sprained ankle. Cottage is mismanaging the information flow. Again....if it's life threatening, helo transport is justified. If it's minor, then they need to give the neighbors a break and use the readily available ground transports that almost always respond to the scene. Again, again....reasonable and intelligent.

Can't tell you if it was a medical evacuation helo or a SO SAR chopper. But as for seeing into your bathroom window.... they can see about as well as you can if you're driving along the fwy and happen to glance at a home nearby. Not much is visible in daytime of the darker interiors, huh? Nightime with lit interiors is a whole lot different. 1000' is the lowest most aircraft can go.... unless they are on landing approach. I'm sure the pilots in the group can correct my generalization.

@284: Tax increases and tremendous spending cuts. You can't exclusively cut your way out of debt; it's gotta be both. And I say this as someone who probably won't vote for Brown's proposals in the fall because I find the cuts to be far too draconian.

My God, there is not even a plan submitted to the County yet the naysayers have already "analyzed" and rejected it. Or opined that perhaps the property owner would GIVE the property away because he doesn't "need more money". Really Santa Barbara? I consider myself a liberal and an environmentalist yet those extremist views in my mind negate any rational review of this or ANY project or policy.

Every one of you who said "it's only $1.44" must be same folks who will be voting for Brown's tax increases this November. It's not the $1.44 folks. It's the inexplicable "Technology Fee" description, and the nickel-and-diming us to death that's at issue. $1.44, for whatever it may be, starts adding up. As will another 1% sales tax, blah blah blah. Start paying attention and questioning these things. You just might have some extra money lying around to spend on something you may actually want.

Some beautiful design came out of that period but there's a reason most mid century buildings are torn down, they were built cheaply and poorly (sometimes dangerously) and most importantly they were ugly. That mural is not going to work on the side of any new construction, tear it down, please!

It seems to be a start in the right direction, a compromise. There are so many hurdles to jump with the first draft, it will likely take many many years to realize a workable plan for the land owners and the public. The public will benefit from the preservation of one of the last glorious bits of coastal open space. My family has recreated on More Mesa for over 30 years, enjoying the trails, beach, flora and fauna. I particularly love photographing the nature and landscapes that abound there. This is a special place that deserves to be saved for everyone to enjoy.

I agree with 178 and I don't even live by Cottage Hospital. Broken bones are usually not life threatening. My understanding (which may be wrong) is that before the helipad was built, life threatening trauma cases were airlifted to Earl Warren and then picked up by ambulance and taken to Cottage. Another possibility would be to airlift them to the airport and have an ambulance take them to Goleta Valley. Just a thought.

And now for something completely different: assuming we're talking about the little black Argentine ants that are common around here, I've noted two things over my 24 years here in SB. 1--they only come inside when there is no water outside for them. They find plenty of food outside. 2--when there's too much water outside they may also come in, like during big rains and broken sprinkler systems. Either way, you can stop them where they're coming in by spraying a light soap and water mixture along their trails, you may have to do it a few times before they get the message. And to keep them out: leave a drip running somewhere in your yard, or even a water bowl or fountain and that seems to work when it's dry.

I am glad this guy got caught he deserves to be in jail for his crimes. But most of you seem to be ready to convict him for his lack of an address. The most useless posts are the naysayers. Not because they dissent but because they never offer genuine solutions or alternatives. That is not helpful, in fact it is the origin of the mob mentality and has lead to many of humanities most horrific acts. I am assuming the solutions like "take all homeless services away" are in fact venting and not genuine. I agree there is a problem, and it has gotten worse in the last 5 years. But do yo honestly propose homeless people come here for the services? How would they hear about them, go to their favorite homeless people forum and read reviews of various cities? Or do they buy Rolling Stone Magazine to read the articles about our parking lots, instead of buying food or booze? Word of mouth, but I thought bums never leave Santa Barbara? Anything being done to help the homeless is a reaction to them being here more than the cause. If you take away everything the community does for the homeless they will not leave. We have nice weather, relatively low density, and wealth (wealth = waste, ones man trash...) It has been proven over and over in this country that you make it worse, far worse, by ignoring problems in order to solve them. I would rather they have a little to lose than nothing to lose wouldn't you? If you are truly a NIMBY at heart then you should be voting for higher taxes and more services for the homeless otherwise they will literally be in your back yard.

That's not the point. Cottage got approval for an airport in the middle of an established neighborhood on the PROMISE that it would only be used for life-threatening trauma cases. Sprained ankles and broken limbs are NOT life threatening, and those patients can easily be transported to the hospital relatively quickly and quietly via ground transportation. At neighborhood meetings (with City Council members in attendance) Cottage reiterated its promise that the helicopter flights would NOT be used for anything other than life-threatening cases where time was of the essence to save a life. Again, broken bones are not life threatening, and do not meet the criteria for helicopter transport. The Council did not give Cottage carte blanche use of the helipad. Reasonable and intelligent people instituted limitations. Cottage appears to be violating those limitations.

I wish all businesses passed along their fees and taxes explicitly to their end customers. Along the same lines, it would be eye opening if people were forced to pay their taxes in one lump sum each April rather than getting a "refund" from their payroll deduction. I think this would finally wake up the voters to the fact that we are taxed at every corner yet receive very little value for this excessive taxation.

Missing The Target |

I'm writing as the Public Information Officer for the City of Goleta ... The City Council has not approved a Target in Goleta. Last fall they unanimously approved initiating a process that would convert the designated land use to regional retail which would pave the way for Target to come into Goleta. Target has now submitted an application and it's working its way through the design and planning process. The proposed location is near Hollister and Los Carneros Way. It requires bringing several parcels together to make one parcel big enough to house a store of this size. You can go to the City's website, click on Meetings/Agendas at the top and then go to the Design Review Board Meeting from January 24, 2012 to read the staff report and the proposed plans.

The southwestern edge proposal is probably not possible - too close to cliffs that are constantly eroding. "On one of the writer’s photographic visits, on a fine, windless day, several hundred pounds of rock suddenly broke free 15 or 20 feet above the beach, and certainly would have killed or seriously injured anyone sitting at the cliff base. Exactly such an event occurred at More Mesa, about a mile east of Isla Vista, in the early 1980s—a man and his dog were killed." http://www.coastandocean.org/spring_summer2005/pages/ five.html "California Coastal Act. The California Coastal Act Planning and Management Policies include provisions requiring minimization of risks to life and property in areas of high geologic hazard, bluff stability and shoreline protection, minimization of geologic instability and erosion along bluffs and cliffs, and safe construction of fill."

No tree company or nursery will pay for this palm, and it is unlikely anyone would take it off your hands for free. These Mexican Fan Palms are prolific reproducers, with seed mostly traveling by bird. They are literally big weeds. I suggest you look in the Indy or neighborhood bulletin board for someone offering trash removal/tree removal services. This is neither surgery nor rocket science; you do NOT need an arborist. You need someone with a chainsaw and a truck. If you want the stump removed, you'll need someone with an ax. Below ground there is nothing but a thick mass of roots the diameter of your finger.

@050 I couldn't agree with you more. I adore cats and dogs but they really REALLY impact wildlife. I had a cat and she killed a bird so from that day forward she wore a little bell around her neck to help alert the birds. Lizards however, don't "hear" like birds do so it would be ineffectual. It really is a shame that so many domestic critters impact our wildlife on beaches, forests and our neighborhoods but what to do? I don't like seeing dogs chasing shore birds on the beach either. The poor things don't get to feed or rest and it stresses them out. Each time a person walks by with a dog, they have to stop eating and fly away. Not natural. But how I love doggies. WHat to do?

Do you really think these kids have intact parenting units? I'm almost certain they are being raised by single parents struggling to work and keep their heads above water. I can't imagine that if 2 parents were in the home they would allow the kids to get mixed up in this kind of activity. I bought a home in the westside 5 yrs ago but am starting to regret it. Lots of tagging, gang fights, and rental homes with lots of people throwing their trash in the yard and storing 5 cars on the properties. If you call the City enforcement people, they tell you they only have one enforcement officer left and they may or may not be able to do anything.

The western edge encroachment is to aggressive on the waterfront. No to this proposal. There's no reason why the development cannot be on the northern edge with open space all the way to the cliff. Those home owners would have first hand access to a preserve at no cost to them. They'd have unobstructed ocean views. Allowing buildout along the western and eastern edge including the western cliff range effectively fences in the preserve and creates multiple reasons for owner complaints. Come on Noleta. It's time for a land purchase.

This has gotten way afield of the OP's question. "We" are not putting a .99 store on State St. The private landlord signed a lease for an approved use. That's how the .99 store came to SB. There is no site on State St. suitable for a store the size of Target, which consumes as much parking as Target, unless perhaps the Macy's building at La Cumbre Plaza. Target wants to build its own giant box, along with a vast expanse of parking lot. Target tried for an SB parcel but the impacts on Goleta were too bad and complicated. My guess is the major commercial landlords of SB weren't that gung-ho, either. The new site Target's after is wholly in Goleta, and they'll probably prevail eventually, but there are a lot of issues and Target may decide it's not worth it. There is no "we" in it. It's all big players and big money. Look at how gutted old town Goleta is. Personally I don't get the big box love at all.

Taken a a group, the comments about Target and Chick Fil A supporting anti-gay causes beautifully illustrates the futility of any form of single issue politics. If you truly have one cause which you consider to be "the one" that you judge every politician, issue, and business by, then eventually you will be forced to compromise every other cause, no matter how worthy. I may not like some of the things that these two businesses support, but can anyone point me at a single, solitary business that supports everything that I support and supports nothing that I oppose?

They are probably restricted by ordinance (or something) from raising the permit fee (which itself is a new thing, I believe), so they have to call their increase by another name. You need to ask them. And of course, as usual when addressing the gov't, good luck with that. Speaking of random new fees: I own a retail business; I don't sell food or anything measured on a scale. But as of this month, every retail business that scans bar codes at the register (as opposed to typing the price into the register by hand) is now required to "register" their scanner with the county Agricultural Commissioner, who inspects Weights and Measures. There's an $80 "registration fee." Per scanner. They are asking us to self-report, and then after we do, slamming us with those angry, punitive letters threatening 100% penalties if we're a day late paying, even though they've given us two different deadlines, and sent them to the wrong addresses. Look around at all the retail stores in SB county; consider how they are going to enforce this; consider someone from the Ag dept "inspecting" the spiffy boutiques on State St., Chaucer's, Old Navy, the various shops in every strip mall in Lompoc... like that's going to happen any time soon. Just another revenue enhancement measure, slapped on wherever they think they can get away with it, 14th amendment be damned.
