The Cacique Street Shelter could learn a HELL of alot from this place. They have a very successful program there at the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission. I know of several subjects that went through that program and are still clean now 5 some more years sober. That is a great place and the guy that runs it is an an ars hole. Food Poisoning |

A little more than a year ago I contracted severe food poisoning on the East Coast which I neglected to treat and thus had three nights in the hospital. Upon my return home to SB, the first morning I received a call from SB County Health Department for follow up. It was surprising and pleasing to know they were on the job, vigilant. What with decreased expectations of everything these days, their vigilance was good to know.

418P: I have no problem whatsoever about a museum being there; it would be a good idea to show that the Chumash do have a history and are not simply casino gambling operators, as most probably think. The problem I have with it is why should the property be tax free (when it's profit-making); a museum, of course, could be a 501c3, tax exempt, as the Museum of Natural History --- but still should have to meet County land use requirements. The Chumash, however, rake in the money, $40-50,000/person/month, owning now three hotels in Solvang, and refuse to participate in the broader community except on their terms, which do not include county land use ordinances. State law requires a contribution towards what the casino costs the community in road use, among others. It is not at all surprising there is such vitriol.

541: What a sad story. What horrible neighbors!!! Something else to keep in mind: those that enjoy hummingbirds should not use systemic poisons on their plants. It does become part of the blossoms, of fuschias, for instance, and does sicken and does kill hummingbirds. 436P: yes, I think it's unfortunate to have to kill other creatures, but I think we who are doing the killing have an obligation to do its humanely as possible. Traps are quick and do not involve other creatures. It's unfortunate that Lenz, for instance, will push to have poison used and you have to insist upon traps. They do cost more, but the unintended kills are bad karma, if you will or bad neighborly, if you'd prefer.

418 here. Thanks, 445, for your measured, rational comments. Alas, the disgusting vitriol posted by 347 is more typical. Although the Chumash reservation does not pay property taxes on the land converted to federal trust status, they do contribute to the community in many ways. They are the 2nd largest employer in north county; they purchase considerable amounts of local goods and services, pay sales taxes, and make substantial philanthropic donations to many nonprofits throughout the county - not because they're forced to but because they are trying their best to be good neighbors. They are met with disbelief, suspicion and hostility at every turn. Obviously it would make no economic sense to expand the casino operation onto their new land, when Indian gaming has an uncertain future in this state. The Chumash need and deserve a cultural center and museum to educate people about their proud and ancient traditions.

Its not a terrible time to buy but we won't see any run up in values like we did due to the type of loans that propelled the bubble, those will never come back. Those who are looking for a home and plan to stick around with the current interest rates its worth exploring you can buy homes for less than you would have paid for condos at the height of the hysteria.

12 years ago new neighbors moved in next door. I told them, happily, how we were all SO LUCKY to have a nesting Barn owl (with owlets) residing in the nearby Canary Island Date palm (a city street tree, directly in front of this new neighbors' house). One week later, same neighbors hired a private contractor/tree guy to hack on this city tree. No permit, of course. I had to call the police to get him out of the tree. I was too late to save the owl's home. She never came back. Did owlets survive? My neighbors were soon hiring another contractor, ---a pest control guy. We then had HORRIBLE problems with wood rats and mice for YEARS after the displacement of the Barn owl. We bought a rat zapper. Thanks to neighbors poisoning rodents, we also suffered with dead and dying animals in walls of our house. Stupid neighbors.

4436... I would gladly trade my neighbour's barking dog for your screeching owls any day. Also, have you ever heard tree rats in the attic munching away on the ceiling joists? Urgh.... give me screeching owls over that!! No matter how you poison the rats they stumble out into the open where domestic cats as well as wild ones will pick them off as easy prey. I've seen what these poisons have done to my cat after it ate only a small portion of a dying rodent. It didn't happen right away but when it did it was obvious how and why.

Animal Rescue Team here: Thank you to those who care to make a change, who do care about this bobcat kitten fighting for her life. We will keep you posted, or please follow our facebook page, where most comments are postive and supportive. For those who do need to control ground squirrels, it is best to use manual traps, VS poisoning. This is a no brainer. As for the Owls, dont get us started. These raptors have also taken a huge hit from rodenticides. Consider yourself lucky when a mating pair of owls does visit and nest on your property. We are all blessed to live so close to the National Forrest, so lets show some respect for ALL living things... Rodenticides is the gift that keeps on giving. It is highly toxic to your plant life too... For donations, please visit our website: www.animalrescueteam.net

The only true fact in this article is that inventory is way down and homes are selling faster than they did a year ago. But buyers have wised up and aren't paying crazy dollars for tiny houses anymore. I've followed the market like a hawk. For houses in Santa Barbara or Goleta to sell today, they have to be priced reasonably. If they're overpriced, they'll sit on the market until they fall apart. Broker babble never stops.

436 & anyone else using poison: MAYBE if you witnessed first hand what these poisoned animals experience over sometimes days and days of suffering, you MIGHT feel and act differently. I've seen secondary poisoning and the ultimate death that occurs. It's HORRIBLE! Far worse than removing a corpse from a trap. Would you poison your neighbors dog or cat? Obviously not, however that's exactly what may have already occurred (or will) without your knowledge. Poisons are just selfish tools that are used that have NO PLACE in our community. Hard to believe they haven't already been banned! p.s....Owls too? Ever hear of earplugs?

The pants are made of nylon with varying degrees of Kevlar threads. The "armour" is nothing more than a few patches of dense foam padding. It is all marketing hype and petty turf wars. Yes, this is why the police unions are counter-productive to what the police chief is still trying to do in this ungrateful town. The police unions are the silly fashionistas on this one, ginning up up a phony show-down over some nylon pants with no proven safety superiority which also look baggy, stupid and unprofessional. But the unions are looking for a showdown after getting such a public smackdown in the last election. Please POA, let us just like your police officers as individuals and stop playing these power-tripping games with us. It is an embarrassment to see those we want to respect act so petty and fraudulent. Vote of no confidence in the police union for stirring this issue up to a petty showdown.

So much for saving the cost of emergency response personnel. Now we're paying for the incident and the housing!! Bleeding heart politicians are the best. Maybe they need car too?

391 gets my point, sometimes I don't want to be in a crowd. I wonder how many shut-ins or folks in hospital would like to see our local show televised on KEYT because they CAN'T get out. I didn't call, I contacted them on Facebook. They didn't answer my WHY question, they dodged it by saying they posted still pics to Facebook. I figured if they didn't broadcast, and wouldn't answer my question with a straight answer on a public forum (here, and Facebook), they wouldn't answer over the phone either. Oh well, another case (in my view) of our local TV news channel failing us.

393P's comment for the win. One person's "baggy pants = bum" is another person's "Kevlar armored pants = not-dead, not-maimed law enforcement official". Seriously? Educate yourself. Sometimes a protective uniform isn't as sexy as skin-tight nylon, you're right. But it's not a disco outfit; it's a PROTECTIVE UNIFORM. Perhaps some commenters would prefer lady cops to pull them over wearing Daisy Dukes. I find that short-minded and a bit disgusting you'd prefer fashionability over function.

The horsebacking pants have no armor and little to none sliding protection. I have been riding motorcycles for 15 years and feel naked riding without motorcycle specific pants and jackets. To try and wrap this into an anti-union rant shows your biased opinion.

Personally, I think Ellis was more guilty. Not only did he start the fight, but the moron kept coming after the other guy. If Castleberry had been a cop, Ellis would have gotten tased, maced, or shot, depending on how aggressive he was & what weapons the cop had on him. Yes, the knife was a stupid choice. (Did he think to tell anyone to call the cops when this was happening? Christ, he could have locked himself in a room or car or something until they came & arrested Ellis's moronic drunk butt.) But still - if I was being attacked over & over again, trying to get away & someone just kept coming for me, I'd probably grab whatever I thought of to end the fight. (Ok, I'd more likely lock myself in a bathroom closet or something & hold a coat hanger out as my weapon. I'm guessing Castleberry thought about as clearly as I would have, his choice just happened to be stupider.)

Woah. A couple seconds of that sped up video & I'm a little nauseous. The zooming in & out got to me! Very cool idea, but I think the camera would have to stay still for a sped up version. Thanks so much for taking the time to do these. It was crazy being there without a watch or anything - I really had no idea how much time passed. It seemed like longer than 20 minutes to me. Neat to see the full length video afterwards.

If the prices were inflated back then, is this downturn really a hit? Sure some bought high and sold low, but a home is a home and that is the real investment. Homes are not short-term flips. They are homes and they are permanent shelters so their value is when you live in them; not when you buy or sell them. Anyone complaining they "lost" value in their net worth because they calculated it based upon fraudulent inflated prices had better not be on the of Occupy crowd who hates banksters, because it was the banksters that helped flip up the prices to unrealistic levels. The rest of us who rode this up and down realistically have nothing to complain about. It is what it is. And sustainable is better than boom and bust when planning out one's lives and net worth assessments. Value investing rather than speculation always pays in the long run.

Each to his own I guess. The diesel smoke is not to impress anyone, it is to get rid of the pests that will ruin any plants that are planted if it is not done. Ground squirrels can carry plague as well as other diseases. It is odd that most are not bothered by the need to kill these pests but how they are killed. It is okay to kill a rat as long as it does not die of poisoning and then poison a bobcat? What if the bobcat is also considered a pest? I certainly don't want bobcats hanging out on my property either. The family of owls were not moving until the tree was trimmed. I believe they were able to fly by then, I'm sure the people that contracted the trimmer had to wait until they were. I will tell you I do not miss them and we do everything we can to make sure they do not set up another nest in the neighborhood. I am expected to go to work every day and I am not able to do so when I am kept awake for nights on end by screeching birds. They are beautiful animals sure but not after over a month of constant noise every night.

Yes, both are guilty. The guy pursuing Castleberry was guilty of assault and battery. His fists certainly had the ability to cause injury though it sounds like he didn't know how to use them. Castleberry tried to disengage (according to the story) but the guy kept coming after him. It was certainly dumb of Castleberry to escalate to the use of a knife (if he was able to retreat inside he could have called police or retreated from the area entirely) but the original instigator is still guilty as well as laid up in the hospital. Hopefully they both learned a lesson. Bravado is dumb.

Calling the kevlar pant-wearing officer a "sloppy bum" is just dumb. His pants are visibly more baggy, they are not in any way bum-like. (stick to the facts you say?) POA has a totally valid complaint, you do not. I am people. I like the police and do not hate police unions. I'm sure there are instances where the union needs some reigning in. Thank you for the rescue and especially thank you for the alternatives to poison. (I am shocked at the response to the owls! ...I hope the tree trimmer waited until the owlets had moved on. Damaging nests of protected birds (and owls are protected, as are most) is a federal offense.) As for poisons vs. traps: traps are just as convenient. Having had a friend's lab eat a poisoned rodent and seeing the vet. expense, not to mention the extreme pain that dog (and owner) went through, I'd never use poison. You may not see the dead rodent, but it's not unlikely that a neighbor's dog or even cat will find it. (And a serious mortality for owls is eating poisoned rodents.)

Human entitlement truly makes me sick sometimes. It is our own ability to ineffectually distance ourselves from the nature that we, TOO, are a product of. There is a serious lack of levity for the actions and effects that come from our carelessness. All for what? So the lawn can look better next Spring? Complaining about animals making noise? Imagine what they say, when you spew diesel smoke down their hole all so you can impress your neighbors.

@450 I agree - I would like to prevent them from harming my property but at the same time they live here too and they are in one way or another needed in this world. I hear a lot of people in Santa Barbara complaining about things but especially noise. I guess being born and raised here and having lived in big cities (such as LA) I don't think the noise we have is all that bad. Nature or man made. Of course I live near the freeway, the train tracks, and right under the flight path of the cottage hospital helicopter routes so I guess I am just not as sensitive. Of course I am sure if I could afford more than $1600 a month for substandard housing then I would probably be more accustomed to the quite. But to me nature is nature and we have to work together to live together.

Ground squirrels are tough to get rid of completely but we have attached a hose to the exhaust of a truch (diesel) and run the line down the holes. Its best if more than one is done at a time. Then once they run out of the holes they can be picked off with a small varmint round such as a 17mm. A couple of dogs that are trained to catch small prey can help as well. I have never had problems with the tree squirrels since they don't cause damage that I have noticed. You could try a live trap on them.

418- They have ownership of the land. The issue is whether it should be exempt from local and state taxes. I am of Native American decent, not Chumash, Hispanic, and a few other nationalities. I have nothing against the Chumash at all. I do however believe that everyone who uses local and state resources should contribute. For centuries before the land was taken from the Chumash there were land wars all around the world. The winners took ownership of the land and the losers assimilated, moved, or died. This is a horrible reality of human history that is far from unique to America. The fact is that today we are not the same people who fought all those years ago. There is no reason to continue exempting any group from equal treatment for any reason.

op here~~ I was parked on Anacapa, across from the Main Post Office and heard sirens from several different engines. Once, it was determined that they were on Canon Perdido, in front of the B of A parking lot, I decided to investigate. As I was walking on Canon Perdido, I saw several Firemen cross the street and go into the parking structure, which is behind The Lobero and that new clothing store. Since, the City Parking Enforcement temporarily turned off vehicle access to the lot, I walked up the "in" ramp to the lower parking area and saw about 5 - 6 Firemen spread-out canvassing the lot. They said there was no visible smoke and they did not see anything blown-up or exploded. ~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ps- I had been sitting in my car for about 25 min prior to hearing sirens and I did NOT hear any "huge explosions", as someone reported to the 911 dispatch. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I was also told that only one call was made to 911 dispatch, which makes the call questionable.

Ok it is ridiculous that he is placing appearance before safety, especially when the appearance is not really altered all that much by the change. The real issue is that he agreed to the change in negotiations, changed his mind, and made them go back to the old uniforms without going through the proper procedures. Cam is trying to show them who is boss. The union is pushing back against what they consider to be an ineffectual leader. Could this relationship be any more toxic? How exactly can a department function with this much negativity and mistrust involved. If Cam is worried about appearances he might want to evaluate how his constant conflicts with his own staff "appears" to the public.

The only problem with inviting natural predators in is that you have a whole new pest to deal with. We had a pair of owls move in to a palm tree a couple of years ago and once the babies hatched out it was a nightmare for months. The loud screeching from babies to parents was unbearable. Finally the owner of the palm had a tree trimmer come in and clean out the tree. All of the neighbors had similar work done on their trees to make sure the birds didn't settle nearby. Rats and golphers can cause damage that costs a lot of money to replace. I have to protect my garden and property. I do not put poison out in common areas, only in my back yard and near my house. I do not see any of these other suggestions being nearly as convenient or cost effective. It would be nice if they were though.

As far for the judgements of the other posters...I really like the glass house comment. There is no such thing as a perfect parent and it can happen to ANY of you in the "wrong" situation. Do what you feel is right to protect your kids. I do. And if that means you put a leash on them, hold their hands or just hope that you have taught them well enough to be able to handle an emergency type situation, at least you do something.

Thanks to everyone for your kind comments on my photography. To address the "shopping cart" comments, I will say that the reason I created my web site is to showcase my photography, and I only offer the images for sale because of past interest folks have expressed in purchasing them. The printing and mailing is handled by an outside lab (MPix), releaving me of the hassle of packaging and mailing. This is a hobby for me in retirement, not a business. The pricing for my two recent "Fourth of July" galleries is now set to lab fee only; I will make nothing on the sale.

I suggest making sure your kids know your cell phone number. We put it to a classical tune they knew early on (thanks to Disney's Little Einsteins) to help them memorize it. We quiz them on it once in a while now that they are older. We've also taught them to stay put but look for a nearby uniformed employee or mom with kids. Also good to carry a photo in your purse or wallet even if you have one on your phone. A little prevention can't hurt. I agree with the glass houses comment Dilly. Likely to be posted from someone without small children. I do hang onto mine quite closely - helicopter parent I guess.

There are always going to be people out there who can do things better than we can and think situations like this can't happen to them. Anything is possible. I've had to face the fact a while ago that radio in this area is not very good. Many of the stations - 99.9, 101.7, 97.5 - play the same thing over and over again. There are so many cool tunes out there - you don't even have to really leave the main stream that they are bound by. But, in fairness, every once in a while, these stations will cough up a gem.....and 99.9 and 101.7 talk about local events. It's not unbearable but wow, it could be so much better.

Lobster was once considered low class, as they are bottom feeders. Laws were passed as to how many times per week one could feed ones' servants lobster. In the 30's my father saw them dumping truckloads of live lobster on fields and tilling them in for fertilizer.(in Maine) Who would have guessed the demise of the Grand Banks cod fishery would result in a boom in lobster catches. Yum!

"Supporting the middle class" is what our country is supposed to be about and what made our country so strong in the first place. It's painfully obvious who in our society doesn't want to support the middle class, and exactly why. The attempt to make "middle class" into some smear against public employees is the height of elitism and reveals an attitude of entitlement and selfishness. That sort of animosity towards working people may be fasionable among the country club crowd, but the vast majority of Americans are middle class, believe in the middle class, and will vote for politicians that support the middle class.

You got some good bursts there. Were you using a point and shoot or a DSLR? P&Ss have a very annoying lag after you press the shutter release especially in low light conditions. By switching to manual mode you can reduce the number of computations the camera's computer has to perform before firing to figure out the best exposure settings. If you can use a tripod, long shutter speed and raise your ISO to get the traditional mushroom shapes you typically see in fireworks photos.

318 hope you reported the harassment directed at you to the police. If *you* ignore it then the next person who walks by will be their next victim and the longer they get away with it the more it will escalate. Don't put up with that kind of nonsense from anyone, but don't confront them yourself either, drunks are very "brave" especially in numbers. I am surprised drinking is allowed at Hendry's, I would check that out too. Even if it is allowed, being drunk and disorderly in public is not.

I agree that some basic clean up of your system first can help. Clean out your browser cache, don't keep large files on your desktop (use aliases instead) as they eat up useable RAM and just re-booting your router and your browser can do a lot.

The issue only became a "waste of time" when Camaron (Google the Spanish translation) Sanchez decided he'd rather have "his" officers sacrifice safety for appearance. Sanchez' outrageous stand on this would be funny as a sketch on Saturday Night Live or a topic on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. Unfortunately, he appears to be serious. I am horrified that an alleged police chief would choose form over function. Wow. And just when you thought his antics couldn't get any more ludicrous.

4186P... ignorance of the law is no excuse for breaking it. Consider yourself educated on that one. You may complain about curbed freedom but you miss the point..... you're free to choose to do anything you want when you want and how you want - the only catch is that there could be consequences. Being adult means recognizing that and choosing whether the price is worth doing the wrong thing. You want to ignore what's considered right and wrong? That's a choice too. Lotsa freedom in all them choices and they're all yours.

Lordy. So many smug posters this morning! @262 contributes something useful. Great idea to form a habit of agreeing on a "what-if" plan. Translates well to the "what if there's a huge earthquake" or "what if there's a huge fire" scenario. Pertinent to adults, children, adult children... and even the annoying "inner children" that post too often on these threads. Here we are living in such a beautiful if imperfect place, in the age of antibiotics and indoor plumbing!

The worms cause the oaks to get a disease that kills them off. Even after erradicated, it's often too late. We had a bad case that quickly spread and lost three trees - all completely browned when they were at their worst. I know my aunt has some in her oak tree as well - I am sure she will be very saddened when it dies. It has nothing to do with watering or anything like that. We had a specialist come out and that's how we found out. Very sad.

If it's REALLY bad, call Cox. Wifi at work was awful for a few days (took a few minutes for each page to load), so someone called and sure enough, it was a problem on Cox's end. Although a lot of times if you just unplug your router for a minute or two, then reconnect it, it will be fine. Try that first obviously. :)

Almost all east coast lobster served locally if farm raised and is badly stored. It hasn't the flavor or texture of bugs caught in the ocean. West coast "lobster" is a different animal and it is unfair to compare it to Atlantic lobsters. Each is good if properly keep, prepared and served. If you are enjoying the specials locally by and large you are going to get farmed lobsters which are more affordable and reliable for the restaurant profits but not as interesting gastronomically. I like Enterprise for the Wednesday special (no corkage fee) but am not fooled that it is high cuisine. Boat House is almost always disappointing--seems more for show than food.

I have not experienced slow speed, but a few days ago it seemed to be a bit slow. You may need to have a professional look at your computer to make sure you are not running too many processes at the same time - that can slow things up. Also be sure that any extra add-on files are removed because those add-ons add up and slow your computer down. I had someone fix my computer and they removed tons of files that were unneeded.

262: I'm not going to further dissect your parenting over the internet, based on a few descriptive sentences other than to say if you guys are having fun that's great. However, unless your children are prone to wandering away, you could "probably" enjoy the same family bonding with the same margin safety if you dropped hands and simply paid attention to each other. I'm not suggesting you should, just saying you could. As an advocate for healthy kids and healthy parenting the "sky is falling" crowd that brings up child abductions as an excuse for smothering their children get me worked up. I don't mean to suggest that everyone that holds their child's hand is smothering them but claiming parental negligence in the case of the original post is just offensive and mentally unhealthy thinking.

Apparently, 188, drinking alcohol, even in glass bottles IS allowed at Hendry's Beach... I was walking my dog there last week when I was harrassed by some drunk guys with lots of beer bottles. Thier dog was attacking my dog and when I asked them to control it, they berated and harrassed me with drunken ignorant impotent comments. I asked the lifeguards if bottles on the beach was legal and they replied that it IS. I was surprised. I have fond memories of the days of the pits on Leadbetter, but no one rude ever harrassed me. I'm like you, a treat once in a while and lobster is my all time favorite...IF its fresh and good. I'm always on the chase. Ive had it twice at the Enterprise, the Boat house, Arch Rock and wasn't overly impressed by any of those. So far, localy (apart from SB Shelfish on the warf in terms of freshness, but it's not Main) the best I've had was at the Beachside Cafe. I was really surprised by how good it was. It was my first time there, and my childhood memories was a corn dog when it was just a snack stand :-) Had the lobster steak combo. Could be hit and miss, but I'd go again.

Sounds like KTYD went off the air. KOLA is on Box Springs Mountain in Riverside, CA, on the same frequency. If KTYD has a transmitter failure, the signal from KOLA is often quite audible in parts of Santa Barbara, particularly if you have a decent radio and antenna. Around Thousand Oaks and Westlake a car radio will kind of randomly swap between them. FM radio has a "Capture effect". If there are two transmitters on the same frequency, one has to onmy be slightly stronger than the other to completely take over the receiver.

How can anyone seriously say that the wool horse riding briches and knee high lace up boots be considered safe motorcycle apparel in 2012! As a motorcycle rider myself, there is a term called ATGATT- All The Gear,All The Time- Short rides or long ones you always wear helmet, boots, gloves, moto riding jacket (with CE armor) and moto pants (CE armor). The City Attorney, Steve Wiley, City Administrator Jim Armstrong and Chief Sanchez are NOT out there riding and are speaking way over their heads!

If you are standing along the parade route and a participant looks your way smiling that's "interacting with their enviornment", with the crowd. I know, I ride a horse in the Fiesta parade and smile and wave, 1st from one side of the street to the other. It's not posing. If the photgrapher gets a direct shot, so be it, it's what was happening when he snapped it.

Yup, I hang onto my 12 and 14 year olds when we are walking through a crowd of 1,000 strangers! We form a chain, it's fun, and it keeps them with us as they should be! And yes, we always make sure we have places to meet just in case we get separated. It makes us all feel prepared and more able to relax and have fun. We have never lost one of our kids though because we talk to them and make sure that they know that we all need to stick together. It would be forever devestating if something happened to one of my kids out of my failure to keep a proper eye on them or to teach them to keep a proper eye on me.

If so that it absurd. Congratulations on her academic and athletic accomplishments. Be proud for sure but know that part of protecting your children is to instill in them the skills and the confidence to be able to cope with the physical world. 229: you are only shaming yourself. As anyone who has ever dealt with children beyond story books and the Cosby show knows, despite one's responsible parenting, things still happen.

Flicka, I don't think you understood the full intent of my message (if you were referring to my message) It frustrates me when people assume nice images mean you must have good equipment. There are plenty of people with expensive lenses and cameras who take crappy pictures. Place the credit with the person behind the lens, not the lens itself. My criticism of the images was honest, not grumpy. They are great photos but I prefer to see people interacting with their environment instead looking directly at the camera and smiling/waving, as if the photographer said "look here and smile"

Loosing an 8 year old child in a crowd is child endangerment. To let this negligent parent off the hook by saying it was an "accident" that could happen to "anyone" just enables them to continue their dangerous and stupid behavior. This is probably not the first time this negligent parent has placed their child in danger. I hope my comments shame this mother/father into being responsible before their child is killed or injured.

I would venture a guess that the oak moth is attracted to trees that are already stressed and/or diseased. Sudden Oak Death causes sap to bleed from the bark of the trunk. Sudden Oak Death is from an exotic pathogen that hasn't been id'd but was first discovered in California (between Big Sur and Humboldt) and is believed to have been introduced by nursery stock or was already present and unidentified (Wikipedia). I would venture another guess that it could be from illegal industrial scaled forest pot growing and its extensive use of pesticides that have created new mutant pathogens.

It saddens me how many people live in a panic state. You hold on to your 12 and 14 year olds? Not healthy. In avoiding a potential momentary panic you are living with a constant one. Be aware of risks and dangers but blanketing your kids in bubble wrap does not prepare them for the transition into independent living. And in preemptive response to the "it only takes a second for a kidnapper/predator/alien" line of thinking the fact is very few children get snatched off the street. Calm down and enjoy life.

Slightly baggier (because they are reinforced) pants ON A MOTORCYCLE cop? Oh, the horror! Yeah, this is a non-issue, and Cam is an idiot for making this a big deal. This shouldn't be up to him, this IS a safety issue, and the officers should be allowed to wear whichever pants they prefer.

As we walked with our kids each time we passed a landmark we pointed at it and said "if we get separated, go there and I will meet you there" but we hang onto our kids at all times in crowds even though they are now 12 and 14, I don't care, it only takes a second to get separated and none of us wants to feel that panic. Hang onto your kids people, jeeez, it's NOT that hard to do! And make a safe meeting spot so if somehow they do get away from you then you know where to go.

In the firepit times it wasn't uncommon for drunks to fall in, and there were plenty of them blitzed after being on the beach all day and into the night waiting for the fireworks. The next day beach-goers could step on hot coals left there. In those days the fire dept put on the fireworks and firemen had to go clean up the beach-pits; of course, no one was responsible enough to cart their own mess away.

Remember when the police were called Peace Officers? They're now called Law Enforcement... a semantic shift as well as a philisophical one... Its so sad that we now live in one of the least free places in the modern world. The irony of celebrating the 4th in America. We live in a police state. A money driven, politically motivated police state... a ridiculous waste of time, effort and an affront to everything that was being celebrated yesterday...

Yes, SBPD does need to look sharp and authoritative. Those pants make them look like bums. Sanchez is right on this one. Police union dissidents are looking for a scapegoat issue to assert their power. Look what happened to US schools when they lessens the dress code for teachers. Same thing here. Citizens need to know who they are dealing with by visuals as well as proper identification. When these officers looking like slovenly bums demand attention, it is going to be a lot harder to get command and control. Don't blow this one, SBPD unions.

Oak moth caterpillars ("worms") eat leaves, they don't make them look brown. That sounds like a disease. Hope it is not sudden oak death, which there was a great deal of concern about some years ago, though it ended up not being a problem in our area (Bay Area and Northern California still suffering from it, many trees dying).

+1 on 240's comment. As a moto guy, Kevlar pants with built-in armor are excellent safety gear. Modern moto boots also have protection over the ankle bone and toes, and are easier to walk in. It's not a horse, it's a moto in traffic. Does SBPD really have the money to worry about fashion?

Sorry you didn't ask yesterday. Ralph's had a lobster special they were running on frozen tails 7 oz. $10.99. We were sharing 4th of July dinner with friends and traveling, so I baked them @400 for 8-10 minutes. Split the soft belly shell, baste with butter, salt, and lemon, place on backs for baking. Fresh is always best, but out of season this wasn't bad. 092's suggestion re: barbeque sounds great.

As a former motorcyclist, the Kevlar reinforced clothing is really smart to protect the rider in falls and accidents. To not let the cops at least choose the option seems backward. What's next, the helmets will be deemed to hamper police actions? Seriously.

I miss those pits although I would never let my kids participate in something like that! It was a fun, unique and crazy/dangerous part of being a teen in SB in the 80's! Loved it and glad I did it but as a parent, I prefer the mellow fireworks that we watched from the sand down by the Harbor. It felt safe, family oriented, fun and the walk with the crowd afterwards felt mellow too, even though there was an ENORMOUS amount of people! I think having Goleta fireworks is awesome, it helps the SB ones to be less insane! We were home by 10pm :)

How short memories are: it was only a couple of years there was a murder by the Dolphin Fountain on the 4th of July, and the perps were only recently sentenced to prison. Since then, the public demands and gets increased police presence. As for alcohol, open containers and drinking are banned all year round. It's stupid to be obvious about it on a day when there is so much police presence -- and, apparently, beach neighbors who'll call the police.

Why is it that bad pictures are the result of a bad photographer but good pictures are attributed to a great lens (or camera)? Do home run leaders in baseball have "great bats" or do gold medal sprinters have "great shoes"? Though many seemed too posed, these were nice images resulting from the skill of the photographer. That said, it bothers me that the link leads to a shopping cart - this is more of an advertisement than the selfless sharing of photos most other edhat photographers offer. Just my opinion.

Maine lobster is best. I don't even bother with Pacific lobster anymore, totally different taste than what I grew up on. Have had several excellent Maine lobster meals at "Boathouse" with nice view of the ocean and reasonably priced. If you can find Maine lobster for prep/cook at home, that is a good bet, but don't be fooled by Pacific lobster, Maine lobsters have claws that have serious lobster meat in them! Yummy :) Same thing for crabmeat, btw, Chesapeake Bay crab is in a league of its own :)

i have noticed that the marmalade cafe in la cumbre plaza advertises a lobster dinner special occassionally. don't know how it is as i have never tried it there, but i tend to like the meals i get at that place, even if it is a chain restaurant.

Walked 2 miles with my family to the beach, sat in the sand down by the Harbor and the fireworks were right over us and totally amazing. Fog didn't do anything but keep it from being cold out tonight! GREAT show, thank you to all the folks that put it on, it was worth the walk with the crowds! Actually, the walk up State Street under the freeway was awesome, everyone yelled and whistled while we were under it, it was a giant sea of people, so cool! :)

Isn't it common knowledge that you aren't supposed to drink alcohol at public parks/beaches? ...And that there would be a lot of police present on the 4th? Shouldn't need a sign, of any size, to let you know that. Be more discreet?

Remember when we dug pits @ Leadbetter, drank heavily and fired fireworks at each other on the 4th. Kind of hard to celebrate gitmo policing and the trashed constitution.

I was at Leadbetter with a group. Shortly after arriving, I saw the police ticketing a picnic on the grass. Next the officers walked over and gave two of us open container citations with no warning. In the officers' words, we were not being disruptive--apparently the city decided there's a no alcohol, zero tolerance policy this 4th. The only signs indicating this were in the sand, far beyond where most people were on the grass. The signs were small (17 lines of text on a 8.5" x 11" paper), only 2-3 feet off the ground, very far apart, not readable after dark, and many were hidden behind tents etc. (some were even knocked over in the sand). I guarantee most visitors never saw the signs; either because they walked between signs or simply stayed on the grass, where they weren't visible. The major pathway to the sand by Shoreline Cafe didn't have such a sign. I'm guessing that anyone who contests a similar citation would easily win in court. Your tax dollars at work.

Thanks to SBPD and great neighbors! I walked out of my house this afternoon (7/4) to find a policewoman approaching my front porch. To my surprise, the officer told me that she was responding to a call about a flag being stolen. I looked up to see that my flag was gone. Turns out a neighbor (who I barely know) called the police after seeing the guy climbing onto my porch to take my flag (and telling him to put it back, to no avail). The police jumped on it, caught the guy two blocks away, found my flag (which had been dumped in someone's yard up the street), and returned it to me. It's so nice, amid all of the problems in our culture, to know that neighbors here in S.B. are true neighbors. Gratitude to all who "do the right thing" in our community.

Thank you Potpourri for calling it correctly... Why do people call it Fish Enterprise? The name, for better or worse, is Enterprise Fish Company. They are a bit overpriced, they skimp on the rice and veggies but their food is decent. The lobster bisque is actually very good.
