Glad you reported them. Cachuma is pristine, except for the odd boat here and there. It is true we can filter the water, but it will be blighted by all sorts of scum polluters along with the well intentioned swimmers. Scum ruin everything. Let's face it, the public campgrounds are always a mess and people leave trash on the beach at Refugio constantly and cachuma with the trashy people leaving diapers and BBQ detritus everywhere basically make anyone normal feel out of place.

The scum rule the roost at these places in summertime. Gotta love the campers with satellite dishes- wouldn't want to miss the game eh?!

Turns out one person was sleeping in the apartment. Fortunately, they were not sleeping on the naugahyde lounge chair that caught fire. They escaped uninjuried as did the other resident of the unit. The situation was also quite scary for the neighbors in the adjacent apartments because burning naugahyde throws off quite a bit of smoke. After a search of the apartment for any other residents, firefighters quickly doused the fire with water. A stuffed animal on the chair suffered major burns. The chair appeared to be a total loss.

You can often tell the young and thoughtless by their posts complaining about "fun" activities that don't take into account their potential impact on the rest of the world. Fireworks, loud music, alcohol, drugs, disobedience at all levels. As long as they can do what they want, they don't care about others. It's often couched in terms of "freedom", but it's just ego, writ large.

I agree with the person from the southeast (786), and I've been here since 1975. The political/social atmosphere of CA,and SB is not consistent with life, as they say, at least not life as I envision it. Of course, not having lived in other areas (save a year here and there) perhaps the rest of the US is now full of overbearing control freaks who would really rather be right than happy, or anyone else to be happy either. I looked forward to the time "our" generation would be "in control", now I see what "we" created, the old days look to have been better in many ways.

Von's closed because all the pious local shoppers refused to cross their picket lines when the unions were knee-capping them for unlimited free health insurance with no cap.

So the pious local shoppers went to non-union Trader Joe's instead. Go figure the virtuous logic of that one.

Von's told these pious shoppers, we don't need you either. Bye. Be sure and check out the health benefits the workers in this new yuppie market are getting and what the prices are for the food all the low-income seniors used to depend on Vons to provide.

Talk about the Law of Unintended Consequences. City did a number on this one.

There is good news and bad news for...

2012-07-03 06:52 PM

Tri-Counties is exactly the type of business that deserves our support and the city's full cooperation to make sure this business can maintain a healthy and safe working environment. They sell healthy food at fair prices, they feature local products, and they are just all around good guys and gals.

So what does the city do -- let the baseball field bums, RV parking dumps and Casa Esperanza's daily effluence put them smack dab in the city's no-enforcement vagrant enabling zone.

Hang in there, Tri-Counties you will win. I know you have been fighting this battle for years and getting kicked in the teeth by too many past city council members. Just proves eating vegetables is so good for you, that you have this much strength and endurance to have survived so long.

Graffiti Vandals Arrested

2012-07-03 06:51 PM

The kids and their parents do need to be held responsible. The kid who got arrested at school, I'm pretty sure thought it was "cool." If they come from a broken home, they still need to suffer the consequences. I had 2 homes and I'm a good citizen. Don't let these kids off with lame excuses. Give them help, like an outlet in an appropriate forum, but don't excuse it. Maybe if their parents don't have any collateral, keep the kid in jail, not juvy. Then make them do community service. Physical labor always is a good idea. They clearly like being outside working with their hands. Oh and I work at a high school, so I know a bit about what I'm talking about.

"Supporting the middle class" is the latest public employee union buzzword for more government employee benefits, higher salaries and job security.

Just substitute " supporting public employee union workers" every time you read of hear "supporting the middle class" in this next campaign season.

Those real middle class workers in the private sector who vastly out-number those pampered union public employees in the public sector are mad and you can expect a huge backlash vote against Big Government and candidates like Lois Capps and Taxin' Jackson.

The wealth disparity that will count this election is between the public sector workers and the private sector workers, no matter how much the public sector unions try to spin it.

It's simple. Water treatment plants use sodium hypochlorite to treat water(bleach). If you have human contact you would need to increase the amount. To much use of sodium hypochlorite in water from a open reservoir causes trihalomethanes to form.To much of this in your water and you wont pass fed. and state rules.Hope this is helpful.Keep your stinky bottom out of our lake.

101 Shooting Incident Report

I continue to be amazed and depressed that certain posters, who have no facts about this incident other than the ones manifestly showing the known and potential danger this suspect posed, reflexively and ignorantly second-guess the police response. Why not wait to hear some details? Also, would any of the skeptics care to wager whether testing of the victim will establish that he was under the influence of drugs (probably a stimulant like meth) when this occurred? Do you think this guy had a record, and do you think the cops had that information handy as this played out? Let's wait and see.

I understand that we live in the age of Tweets with limited characters to get our points across or text messages where it just takes too long to bother to make sense. If you can't be bothered to make sense you should expect the knee jerk reactions from people reading that stuff.

Take responsibility for what you write, is all. Re-read it before hitting the send button and read from the pov of a total stranger clear across town or the county, not your bff or your aunt in Pacoima who just loves to hear from you no matter what.

Take away a grocery store and people will have to walk further. The number of people now walking to the remaining store is less than when there were two stores because for many people the store will now be out of walking range.

Proper planning for a walkable city calls for nodes of retail placed throughout the city within walking range of the residents.

Chair and Table Rental

2012-07-03 03:59 PM

I researched rentals for my wedding last month - event rents and discount party rental were each similarly priced - some things were cheaper at one and more expensive at the other and vice versa. ER had a more expensive delivery charge I believe. But then I decided to broaden my search and Ventura Party Rentals was over $400 cheaper than ER and Discount! The same delivery charge too! I was very pleased with them - they forgot to drop off the bases to 3 tall cocktail tables and when I realized it and called them, they got them to me in less than 10 minutes! They must have already realized it or something, because I'm pretty sure it was not humanly possible to get them from Ventura to SB in 10 minutes!! :)

We already know that Maldonado and his family don't want to pay their taxes, but contrary to your assertions, the average working person who pays taxes on virtually every dollar they earn would really like to see Maldonado and all the other wealthy tax cheats pay their fair share already!

Lois Capps has been a fantastic representative, who is incredibly accessible and a tireless advocate for the people, businesses, and environment in her district. The no-swimming rule at Cachuma has been extant since the lake was created back in the '50s. When I was a very small child, someone fell into the lake from a rowboat or something and went missing. The locals were freaked that a corpse was floating around in their water supply, so a huge number of people switched to home-delivered bottled water.

Over the ensuing weeks, the incident was gradually forgotten and people started canceling their water delivery.

And then a couple of weeks afterward, they found the body--which by then had been in the lake a long, LONG time. So everyone immediately switched back to bottled water again.

That memory stayed with me since then, which is probably the reason I drink Coca-Cola instead of water to this day.

There is good news and bad news for...

2012-07-03 02:07 PM

Religious institutions have long been the place where individuals get help. No reason for local taxpayers to duplicate services.

No one is owed religious "freedom" when they demand handouts. Social security and veterans admin provide an adequate social safety network for those truly disabled.

How did it get so far out of control here? It was an unholy alliance between professional agitator Mitch Snyder and the SB tourism industry back in the 1980's, that told SB powers that be to bend over backwards to avoid the national publicity stink these professional agitators were causing SB in the FigTree days. Even Doonesbury weighed in to mock "rich" Santa Barbara.

Then social progressives who were heavily invested getting paid to "solve" this problem started playing the guilt card to subsequent city councils, who got to pretend they were "compassionate and progressive" and the cycle of fraud got institutionalized.

I, too, would love to see the city government get back to basics, i.e. public safety, fire & rescue, roads, and park and recreation and stop with all the social work. The water quality issue isn't entirely smoke and mirrors either. My understanding is that the pollutants from gas engines are easier to filter out during processing than human pollutants. Same with cross species biological pollutants (fish poo), they are less problematic than human pollutants (we are not as susceptible to bacteria carried in fish crap then people crap). Many municipalities have the same rules regarding their lakes and for the same reason.

On the other hand I am mostly glad for the rule because the population that Cachuma draws from is huge and it would be unusable for anything but speed boats and drinking on the weekends.

The last time we took the kayaks up to the lake, the attendant at the front entrance made us wait 20 minutes until he had time to bother with inspecting the boats. In the meantime, everyone who had a power boat was allowed to go right past us and not wait at all. Our yaks are kept indoors, and not left out to weather and collect dirt and debris; and yaks don't stream fuel and oil into the water like power boats do. If you observe the power boats when they are started up (black smoke billowing, oil pools on the top of the water...) there is no way on earth anyone could justify allowing those, but not yaks (or swimmers). The staff at the lake have made it such a nightmare that we have given up going to the lake. It can take an hour just to get the boats onto the lake with all of the red tape. Now we just go down to the harbor. Also not the cleanest water but at least we are not treated like unwanted (though paying) guests!

Maldanado has a very savvy group of supporters with deep investments in what is good for our country. Capps has the same tired group of insatiable nanny-staters demanding bigger and bigger government. Never has the direction of this country been clearer or the voter given more qualified choices.

Nanny-staters spending other people's money on big government can do no better than Lois Capps. Those who recognize the above is unsustainable and bankrupting everything we used to stand for and promise in this country have the right candidate in Abel Maldanado.

Lois who never generated a private industry pay check versus a candidate who has walked and talked both sides of the economy - both state and private. Voters not only have a choice for themselves; they have a choice for the direction of this country at stake.

Painted Cave Fire Recap

2012-07-03 01:07 PM

I lived on the beach in Hope Ranch by the back gates and remember the Sheriffs coming by to tell us to pack up and get ready to go, if the winds hadn't died it would have burned through. I don't think there was any goal to protect Hope Ranch at all costs its pretty much known if a fire gets in there with a wind behind it there is to much growth to stop it.

293703 - You're right....Let's instead cut the capital gains tax to 5%, lower the top income tax bracket to 10%, and remove all gov't regulation on industry. Then of course when the mega-rich become mega-mega-rich, they will hire all the unemployed, give everyone huge raises and extra days off, and they will donate billions to local schools so kids can have new books, art and music classes, and sit in a classroom with less than 40 of their friends, and they will also donate billions to programs that will end homelessness and drug addiction. CEO's across the country will do away with bonuses for all upper management because they have enough money already. The world will be a better place. I can feel it.

Or maybe what I feel is my hemorroid flaring. Hard to tell.

I've grown up around the lake and as a child I'd fall in while fishing on a hot day in a cove. I wouldn't want to get caught swimming in it by I was young and didn't care. I always wondered how 2 stroke motors could piss gas/oil mixed in the lake but the public couldn't swim.

I'm sure the lake would look like redrock in a short period of time with loads of immigrant families leaving trash and dirty diapers floating in the lake and around the recreating areas. They can't afford the canoes or kayaks/boats but an swimming.

Let the rule stand. The day it's removed the lake will turn into something worst than nacimento and I don't want to see that happen.

You can never predict what another human is going to do even if you know them well. All of the training that law enforcement goes through helps them prepare for most eventualities but it is understood that criminals are very unpredictable. You protect yourself and your fellow officers just as you would protect your family. When this man rammed the police vehicle he put himself into the trajectory and the officer did what he had to - the job as he has been trained to do it. If you step to someone with a gun, you take your chances.

I alerted the Rangers?? What possible harm could be caused by swimming in the lake. Such a bizzare rule. There in lies my biggest complaint with California in general - a need to control every aspect of its citizen's lives. When I moved here four years ago from the southeast I expected an earth loving but otherwise laissez faire, live and let live attitude. What I've found is the most restrictive, controlling, anti-freedom place I've every been. I love the climate, mountains, and ocean but you can have the rest.

And by the way, in the rest of the country recreational use of lakes includes swimming and the drinking water derived from those lakes meets or exceeds the EPA's drinking water health standards just like here in California.

Sorry for the rant, but I was hoping for so much more freedom from this great state. And yes, for all you folks that will tell me if I don't like it, then leave it that's what I plan to do.

Yes, let's vote to keep more feel-good legilslators on for another term to spend other people's money that ran out years ago. Let's all make it one more big win for public employee unions because they are getting so much bad press lately. There morale must be suffering and that means they will take it out on us. We can't let that happen.

Let's keep the tax dollars flowing into the public union's hands because how else can we finally get wealth distribution in our country. Take those tax dollars that are slipping through the system and make sure they are used to give public employees more benefits, more perks and ensure we support them as our own "middle class".

Capps can do this for us. Who could say no?

This question was raised at the recent renewal of the Federal Land Use Managment Plan when it expired after 50 years since the lakes creation. It took 8 years to write (and is only for 25 years).
A few other activites were added to the lake, such as kayaks and canoes, but swimming was not included. I can understand some safety issue of mixing boat and swimmers, but even when a separte area was proposed it was vetoed.

You get the slum because these inclusionary unit projects attract out of town owners for the market rate units who don't care and later will pay next to nothing for later building up keep. Selling these units to out of town landlords will create the exact same slums that out of town landlords have inflicted on our community all over town.

And because the inclusionary units get to pay subsidized maintenance fees too, they can hardly support the long-term building maintenance needs either, once they buy in at their subsidized rates. The first wave of investors in these urban planning white elephants move in quick and dirty, make their profits and sell out ahead of the building's decline. And that is how you get slums. Inclusionary units defy all principles of real property stewardship.

Casa Esperanza is participating in mission creep which is one more reason so many feel-good projects go bad.

Foley admitted they were "exploring" option for the viability of this shelter, which means to me community support is probably dropping and they are now "exploring" selling out the original intent of this shelter to the highest bidder and disregard for the regulations or consequences.

This is what happens when feel-good projects get a sense of entitlement and mission for their own self-preservation rather than carrying out their original intent. This mission creep by Casa is so outrageous it has to get a TRO now.

I agree that the training of the owner is just as important, if not more so, than the training of the dog. I walk my dog twice a day, and everyday work on her heel and site. Then when we get home, I work on her stay. Most days, I work on her leave and get it, using food. I am now working with her on coming back when off-leash.

They left the bar at closing time and the call for rescue didn't come in until after 6am. Add to that the time to locate them and stabilize them for transport.

Blood alcohol can go from waaaaay to drunk to drive to only mildly buzzed in 5-6 hours.

32 market rate condos and 5 free-ride subsidized condos guaranteed to sink this project just like this inclusionary housing give-away schemes tanked Paseo Chapala and Chapala One. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Law of Unintended Consequences handing out goodies for the few jeopardizes the benefits for the whole. The city had no business getting into the housing market with their social agenda because none of them ever ran a large successful business or engaged in large market projects.

One more high rise slum for Santa Barbara with empty store fronts and negative impacts on city retail sales tax. It is too bad the tail of failed prior city councils can mess up our city for so long afterwards. Audit the former city council's inclusionary housing mandate and either revise, it or get rid of it now.

Santa Barbara cannot solve all of societies ills on its own and while it has been piously trying to do exactly that playing some ineffectual guilt card, the rest of the city residents have been battered in the long sustained fall-out of this misguided and misdirected social agenda foisted up on us by the overly zealous few.

Bring back balance and compassion for Santa Barbara residents as a whole, and not every free-loader and panhandler who chooses to come here to take advantage of the city's past misguided compassion carry off the lions share of city resources.

That voice is young, diverse, global and entrepreneurial who knows Capp's former nanny state short-term payoffs to the special interest few have only created long-term debt and a failed national agenda dumped on the younger generation who is finally rising up to stop this structural crisis.

Don't let Capps divert with this non-issue family farm tax matter. In fact be stunned at this family's one generation success story that Capps is trying to cover-up with election slime.

He wasn't thinking about the well being of his family when he broke into a home and stole belongings, or when he ran from the police, or when he put citizens' lives in danger by driving the wrong way on the freeway.

He wasn't worried about his family's welfare when he rammed a patrol car with his vehicle.

This plea to "think of the family members" is a hollow one that has no place here.

Think of the innocent people this criminal could have harmed or killed if the scenario had played out differently.

2012-07-03 09:17 AM

@646p - Shoot out the tires? You realize that a vehicle can still move with flat tires right? It's not an automobile when you are ramming something, it is a weapon, he didn't need to have a gun at that point. He made a decision that unfortunately, ended his life. He could have just accepted that he was caught and surrendered, he chose to take any means possible to run, which included the possibility that he could be killed by officers.

When he stopped on that bridge, he made a choice to not surrender and to attack the officer with his car. That was an act of assault that put the officers life in jeopardy and gave him no choice but to end the confrontation in this manner.

The freeway wasn't closed and he hadn't been "on the run" long enough to have even closed the fwy or set up spike strips. Think about the big picture, w/out getting your own emotions involved. The suspect did the wrong thing, all day, and should have known better than to do all of the things he did throughout the day. He posed a threat to many innocent civilians and the officers involved. I think we waste too much county money on cops, road work, suicide barriers instead of schools and good teachers. Per-capita we have way more cops than is needed for this county. What we need is a gang injunction, come down hard on the people who continuously break the law, and get judges who give pedophiles and sex offenders stiffer sentences than 5yrs for raping children. What is more important, having a great educational system and after school programs to shape our youths or paying for more cops to ride around on bikes or be the most up to date in CSI. Cops here get paid almost twice as teachers, is there something wrong with that. I don't trust cops to protect me and my family, especially since most are aggressive and trigger happy. There are a few good cops in this town, a lot of out of county cops with big city thinking, not good.

2012-07-03 08:26 AM

I agree, we should never turn to pay for parking at Hendry's or any beach parking on the Mesa. There is always a spot on a side street which entails a little walk. I don't want our town to be like Ventura or LA, it takes away from the small town feel. As for the guy who said that there wasn't surfing or bodyboarding in SB, you are wrong. My Grandfather surfed regularly in and around SB in the 40's and 50's. There was also a surf club that competed against other surf towns like Windansea and Malibu. Surfing caught on in CA even before and during WW2 when the Navy was stationed in Hawaii. SB and SoCal towns were littered with surfers as was Santa Cruz and a few other places north. Sunscreen wasn't used as ofen back then and there were no wetsuits, surfers wore blue jean cut off shorts and wool sweaters for warmth during the winter months. Happy 4th all SB loc's.

Officers could have shot out the tires instead of the driver. Yes he broke the law by driving the wrong way on the freeway and he rammed a cop car with his car. Why not take out the object that was allowing the suspect (yes he was not yet convicted of the crime) to create such chaos. He did not shoot at officers, he used the car. If the officers had disabled the vehicle they could have arrested him and charged him. B&E, Theft, and all of the charges associated with the chase.

Seems to me that cops are trigger happy, or feel their badge justifies them to shoot to kill when non-lethal force could be used like spike strips or bean bags. The suspect was not shooting at the cops, he merely ran into a cop car causing no known injuries. Sure going into oncoming traffic could have caused a serious accident, but it didn't and doesn't justify killing someone. Shoot out the tires and use other options, a robbery and police chase doesn't justify killing someone especially when he was surrounded, his car was immobile, and he didn't have a gun. As a cop your emotions can not effect using good judgement and taking a non-lethal route.

I don't get how people think this was not justified with the information being released. He was ramming the officers car, the officer has no idea where this guy is going to draw the line, does not know the mindset of the individual and has a responsibility to protect himself and others. This person was driving the wrong way on the freeway, if he let him continue he could have killed an innocent family.

It's unfortunate this person chose to behave in this manner, but we've all seen TV, we've all seen what happens when you assault police officers. This is the end you can expect, especially when you are in a car and the only visible parts of your body are upper torso and head with multiple kill zones.

What's annoying, 293602P, are people that aren't quite sure what a particular latin phrase means or how to properly use it in a sentence, but they go ahead and do it anyway. Quod erat demonstrandum.

Hendry's Walk

2012-07-03 07:20 AM

578, it's worth a little planning on the visitor's part if parking close to Hendry's is the goal. Convenience isn't each person's right. But, in Santa Barbara, accessibility to the beach is. So, thinking for the greater good, let's leave Hendry's free. It's the classy thing to do.

Hendry's Walk

2012-07-03 07:19 AM

When I was growing up in he 40's Hendry's Beach was where my parents and their friends hung out. These were pre-skin cancer scare days. Sunblock was unknown. Our objective was to get as tan as possible. We often overdid it and our skin would peel. Heading towards Hendry's our excitement would peak when we reached the point on Las Positas where there was a bit of a rise in the road. From there we could see if there were big swells or not. These were pre-surfboard, pre-bodyboard days. We body-surfed and rode waves on old inner-tubes and big white cotton "beach bags" that my mother would make. We'd wet the bags and fill them with air by running down the beach with the bags open, tying them off quickly with a rope. Exhausted after a day at the beach and getting tumbled by the waves, we'd head to the Foster's Freeze on De La Vina for a malt or a sunday, which cost .25 back then. Hard to beat growing up in beautiful Santa Barbara!

Dog Trainer

2012-07-03 07:15 AM

Andrea Bratt Frick, she's amazing, certified CPDT, and much more. All positve reinforcement training. She's been training dogs and giving training sessions for several organizations for a number of years, like DAWG, and K-9 PALS, for their dogs, volunteers, and shelter dog adopters. She teaches classes at the Humane Society, too. 805-708-1418.

101 Shooting Incident Report

2012-07-03 07:12 AM

In these tough financial times, I propose we do away with our expensive judicial system. From the Sheriff's media release it's easy to glean the details of what happened and where blame lies. Why pay lawyers, judges, juries, and administrative personal to dig deeper?

101 Shooting Incident Report

2012-07-03 06:55 AM

An officer's life was in danger as were the lives of ordinary citizens who were confronted with a desperate, irrational wrong-way-on the-freeway driving criminal who had just been caught inside a house.

Deadly force was indicated.

For those of you who say this was overkill, what would you have said if one innocent bystander was killed or maimed by this criminal?

There was enough provocation and indication that the suspect was uncooperative and dangerous. I'm glad they shot him before he could harm someone.

High density downtown housing actually reduces overall carbon footprint-- commuting times, parking needs, etc. Santa Barbara has comparatively little compared to other cities.

Didnt SB Sheriffs shoot and kill someone just last week?
Though Im sure there will be "justifiable" reasons given, still gives one pause, in a County like ours.

Dog Trainer

Another plug for Wency Lopez. I've known her as a dog/person trainer for almost 20 years. She is good with the dogs and straight forward with the handlers.

Dogs are not hard to train, it's the handlers that are hard to train!

Good luck with your friend! Happiness is a well-trained dog!
