Nail Salon

My mother's toenails improved with better nutrition, and
frequent soaking and trimming of the nails. Highly recommend tea tree oil--very effective natural disinfectant that prevents infection and promotes healing--put a few drops in about a 1/4 cup water, dip cotton in, and dab the toes liberally. Also, daily airing the toes and having some sunlight on them is very important. Being in socks, shoes, or slippers all day promotes sweating and conditions where fungus can thrive. Good luck!

The reality is that the food and clothing are the easy part to obtain. I think food stamps should be means tested: if you are overweight, you don't get your food stamps. No sense in overfeeding the obese and then also paying the associated health care expenses. I'm sick and tired of hearing that we are too obese as a nation while at the same time we giving away food to the obese.

Deep down, being homeless, not knowing where your next meal is coming from and being alone is a fear most people have even if we're not conscious of it on a daily basis. But some tiny minds, instead of being compassionate and looking towards a solution or heck, just acknowledging that people deserve a bit of empathy (which, by the way, people, is not the same as the handouts you keep going on about. I'm talking about just common decent respect for that person as a fellow human being) people here rant on about what's fair to them and how the homeless are all indecent people who scam the system and take their money away from them.

If you don't want to see them get benefits, then let's stop YOUR social security, too. At some point in their lives, many of these people worked JUST AS HARD AS YOU DID. Please try and remember this.

Janis, thank you for your courage to give your story to Rolling Stone! I hope you read this, despite the comments from ignorant people. Here's how to redefine the situation: don't tell people you're homeless; tell them you are residentially mobile. Tell them this is entirely BY CHOICE and that it is to lessen your carbon footprint. Say that you calculated your carbon footprint and couldn't live with yourself any more and had to change your lifestyle. Say that others are doing this in Portland and one or two have caught onto it in Seattle and it's the newest thing in permaculture. Voila! You've now started a trend and laundered the stigma (I hope). At any rate, it will leave people speechless long enough to consider you as a person!!

I think there are two distinct issues that need separating. No question we should help those who have fallen out of the bottom of the economy. I know a lot of longtime and native Santa Barbara residents who've been on the Housing Authority's wait list for YEARS. But the problem is the Flacks crowd thinks we need to extend help to anyone choosing to locate here. They consider housing out-of-state arrivals at our expense a total victory. No city can assume that burden. We need to question who is being helped, and how effective that help is. Take care of our own first.

Indeed, the hostility to those who are having hard times is stunning. As for why people come here, perhaps because of families, friends, familiarity with place. Anyone backed by Micky Flacks and her SB4ALL group (eg. Bendy White too) are known well ahead of time to anyone casting their votes.

Don't do it. Stop electing people who think it is okay to keep expanding these programs that welcome even more for vagrants to come squat in Santa Barbara. You did this to yourselves. And keep handing money to groups like New Beginnings whose only job is to self-promote themselves on your dime.

Nail Salon

2012-06-30 06:35 PM

You probably won't believe this but---it works. Use the trimming as suggested by 934, but instead of soaking rub Vicks Vaporub into the nail and around it. Be sure to massage it in at the nail base and under edges. Do this night and morning. Wear socks to keep it working at night. Be sure to keep trimming the affected nail as short as possible. I see improvement right away and small nails are usually healthy in a month or so. Big toes take 6-12 months. After fungus is gone be sure to treat once or twice a week to keep it away. I siwm daily and worked at a pool/gym for years. This absolutely works.

I am sure Ralphs loves this new neighbor too after being overrun with the wino vagrants that made their beautiful store so scuzzy.

Or did the city just double the trouble in one more neighborhood justl ike they did with Casa Esperanza and Milpas. No wonder the Radio Square developer ran away from his project down there.

Are you sure that you've identified the bad component? Apple doesn't replace components on motherboards--they sell you a new or refurbished motherboard so you replace the whole thing.

I doubt that MacMechanic can help, but not harm in trying. They want $55 to identify the problem though. If you are not in a hurry, the approach that I used was to monitor Craig's list until I found a used working G5 at a reasonable price. Another place to look is on Ebay. You can buy a motherboard there, but be sure it is exactly the same model--lots of G5 models were produced.

If you buy a used Mac--mine had a bad hard drive and optical drive--your old computer will serve as a supply of some parts--other than the motherboad.

BGAs are typically reflow soldered - which means you lay down solder paste and then heat the whole board to the solder's melting point. Since they have solder joints buried under the center of the part, there's also no way to visually inspect them to make sure you've made good connections.

This isn't likely to be something you can do in your garage, I'm afraid. This sounds more like a job for an authorized Apple repair center.

Dana Point group sponsors portable showers for homeless: http://www.ihopeoc.org/about-us/news.
The 2007 Cost of Homelessness Study in Portland, Maine, determined that per person, average homeless services cost before and after permanent supportive housing, decreased from $28,045 to $14,009 annually. The largest savings were in mental health and psychiatric hospitalization, which more than covered the cost of providing housing.
The 2009 Massachusetts Study, Home and Healthy for Good, determined the projected annual savings before and after permanent supportive housing was $9,261 per chronically homeless person. The savings came from Medicaid, shelter, and incarceration costs. Additionally, the average annual health care cost for individuals living on the street was $33,327 compared to $8,598 for individuals who obtained housing.
SAN DIEGO COUNTY GRAND JURY 2009/2010 (filed May 17, 2010)
The 2009 Los Angeles Public Costs Study, Where We Sleep, showed the annualized cost of services before housing at $34,764 and the cost of services with housing at $7,260, a savings of $27,504. The only outlay of providing housing was General Relief vouchers to pay rent. One conclusion of the Los Angeles Public Costs Study was to make increasing use of state and federal block grant funds, to develop affordable housing.
Cities that provide service-enriched housing to the homeless show an annual cost savings and improved use of services when housing is provided. Although the homeless study groups differed in their areas of analysis, from chronic homeless to mentally ill, all the reports showed savings when the following services provided:
Medical care
Mental health evaluation
Substance abuse programs
Employment training and placement

SAN DIEGO COUNTY GRAND JURY 2009/2010 (filed May 17, 2010). http://www.sdcounty.ca.gov/grandjury/reports/2009-2010/HomelessReport.pdf

This is a very interesting report - the $$ saved by providing services to the homeless is counter-intuitive. The report includes comparison of expenses in San Francisco, Columbus, Ohio, and Phoenix, Az, with a lot of data from Boston, Mass.

I don't know of another city with a wealthy benefactor in its history who invited homeless people to build and live in shacks on their property and form a self-policed community, but I know the population of homeless on Lillian Child's estate increased during the Depression in the 30's (when the family who built the original Mirarar Hotel in Montecito was forced to sell due to the economy). ... Hopefully with the demise of the RDA funds, this will be the last government housing project/sober living facility built in this city. We already have too many for a relatively small city. I read this article and now I know why our state, county, and city are always running such deficits. They have the money for projects that benefit a few people who made poor life choices, meanwhile thousands of our local kids continue to suffer from drastic cuts in education. No way in hell I'll be voting for the sales tax increases being pushed by Gov. Brown in November and Mayor Schneider in 2013 (and I'm a Democrat).

However, Nancy Kapp is wrong about Food Stamps. When people apply for Food Stamp benefits, all their assets are waived. You can have a car, or you can have $5k in a bank account, and you'll still be eligible if your income is low enough. One car won't make you ineligible to receive those benefits.

2012-06-30 02:40 PM

Nope. That's just normal oil from the boats in the harbor and sediment rising to the top and staying there due to tidal fluctuation. It's pretty normal, particularly during summer when it's hotter and there is less breeze over the top of the water. Not to say it's not gross or an eco-burden. But it's not dangerous or from a spill.

Hard times can fall on anyone. I don't plan to be homeless any more than the next person, but at least if I ever am, I can look back on my life and say I was never a disgrace to humanity by passing judgement and separating myself from the very real and possible tragedy of homelessness by pretending I'm better than anyone else.

tl/dr: this can happen to ANYONE.

"I have known Janis for nearly twenty years... she is not a slacker... has an excellent work ethic and had the courage to run her own successful business for many years. Success meaning she had the ability to feed, clothe and house herself. Millions of Americans live hand-to-mouth, working steadily for basic necessities. Where would you be without income for a two year period? Thank you Jeff Tietz and Rolling Stone for this heartbreaking wake-up call. Let us all stop the judgement and begin to offer possible solutions to our current state of decline."

If you would like to know why the US is in decline and people have to put up with the "pesky" homeless with no thought that they are humans who have lucked out, check these graphs:

Grief Gets Stuck In Your Teeth

2012-06-30 01:03 PM

I think your feelings about all that you expressed are very normal, but most of us are afraid to share with friends how we are really feeling about life.

You do seem a bit young to be focusing on death especially for people you barely knew.

Don't let these feelings turn into chronic depression....find some hobbies that make you feel happy and try to focus on all that is good, having upbeat friends helps too. Death, sadness, grief are normal, especially when you feel "middle aged" which by the way you aren't yet.

Could be some hormone imbalances that need to be addressed or maybe a few changes in your diet program will make you feel better physically which in turn should help you feel better mentally.

Thanks for sharing....these thoughts make us take a good look at how we are feeling and maybe finding some practical solutions to feeling happier and also realizing we are not the only ones that feel this way.

Had toenail fungus on both big toes where significant parts of the nail were separated from the nail bed. Soaked feet so that nails were soft and pliable. Trimmed off all nail that was no longer connected to the nail bed. Trimmed down as far as possible without injuring the good tissue. Then, on a nightly basis, soaked feet in healthy solution of epsom salt in water. Got the water as hot as I could tolerate it. Soaked feet for a good 25-30 mins. Would debride (remove) affected tissue whenever possible. Kept toenails trimmed so that affected area was always exposed to air. (Fungus does not like aridity.) Twice a week would apply 50/50 solution of household bleach and water to area. Wore open-toed footwear as much as possible. After 18 mos. nails have improved 85-90%. Bear in mind that it takes about a year for the big toenail to grow out completely.

No drugs, no expensive Dr. visit, no unnecessary assault on the internal organs from meds.

It is really hard if you are an elderly person and get your wall tagged. You have a short time to clean it or get fined and often are on fixed small incomes. They should not have to sell their homes or take loans against them to fix what the taggers trashed.

The good news, the babies will be big enough to leave the nest soon and you will have your peace and quiet back.

The bad news, if the birds had mites, which they sometimes do, the mites in the nest can then find their way into your bedroom when their "hosts" are no longer there and you can become their hosts. It happened to a friend of mine.

Be sure to have the nest totally removed as soon as the birds leave. I would have an exterminator handle the job just to be sure there is no infestation.

Eight Goleta office buildings face ...

2012-06-30 10:45 AM

WASHINGTON (AP) — From Cape Hatteras, N.C., to just north of Boston, sea levels are rising much faster than they are around the globe, putting one of the world's most expensive coasts in danger of flooding, government researchers report.

U.S. Geological Survey scientists call the 600-mile swath a "hot spot" for climbing sea levels caused by global warming. Along the region, the Atlantic Ocean is rising at an annual rate three to four times faster than the global average since 1990, according to the study published Sunday in the journal Nature Climate Change.

It's not just a faster rate, but at a faster pace, like a car on a highway "jamming on the accelerator," said the study's lead author, Asbury Sallenger Jr., an oceanographer at the agency. He looked at sea levels starting in 1950, and noticed a change beginning in 1990.

Since then, sea levels have gone up globally about 2 inches. But in Norfolk, Va., where officials are scrambling to fight more frequent flooding, sea level has jumped a total of 4.8 inches, the research showed. For Philadelphia, levels went up 3.7 inches, and in New York City, it was 2.8 inches.

Great work by the SBPD!! The arrest 'at school' is a good way to show these punks--you will be caught! Now if only the sentencing and reparations were tough enough to make a difference in their lives. I agree with most folks that the parents must be held responsible in part, but a good dose of 'City Service' for the perps and social stigmata would be best.

Without snarkiness I will say that you should NOT take your grandma to get a pedicure while she has a nail fungus. Indeed, this is how it gets spread in the first place. I got it from a pedicure at an unamed salon, (ahem) in the Paseo Neuvo mall... and after 9 months its still here, although going away. I was apalled and very upset. I'm the cleanest most fastidious person when it comes to personal hygiene. Why not give grandma a loving home pedicure that you do yourself and then take her to the foot doc? Interesting irony. The liberal/progressive clique that won't even do anything about the "homeless" bums inhabiting the downtown area, and who think they have a moral duty to house everyone is complaining. If these troublesome tenants, who often can't rent anywhere else, were being housed in some public housing "do-gooder project" there would be few complaining. The only control any landlord has over any tenants behavior is not to rent to them in the first place (if their propensities are known or do so at the risk of being accused of "illegal profiling") or to evict them when the landlord finds out. (a slow and expensive process. Pini is in public pergatory fueled by the liberal/progressive/socialist hypocrits and the salacious and sensational seeking local media.

Dr. Keller offers and has developed inovative surgeries that others may not know or use. He teaches at UCLA and Face Surgeons, who have completed their training, work with Dr. Keller during their Fellowships to learn his techniques.

He is the only doctor who specializes in faces.

The best recommendation came from a supplier who visits all the plastic surgeon and sees their work. He liked Dr. Keller hands down and said, "He is not only the best, but the most reasonable for the quality of the work and aftercare. " I found all of that to be true.

Unless things have changed since I was in beauty school, a school nor salon should treat anyone with a nail fungus (IF that's what it is), rather, it should be treated by a doctor. We respond by expanding the airport at sea level and rearranging the utilities' rate structures! The smartest team will win and it isn't ours.

292840, the fault (for the long serving directors) is ourselves: we need to participate in elections, run for office or at least vote! As for this decision, it's hard to understand: as there should be equal pay for equal work, so the water charges should be based on usage (and costs associated with those specific usages.) But we know pay is not equal....

Maybe homeowners should be given a break or maybe agriculture should be given a break, but those preferences should be laid out clearly. Correcting a prior inequity by creating another is not a good solution, even if one has hard a time crying up a tear, let alone a storm for the Bermants and others.

ISS Back Again

2012-06-30 06:02 AM

Technically, it is unidentified since it hasn't been formally identified as the hoax it is. Evidence indicates ISS is a lighted orbiting prop, possibly an inflatable.

Although a poor quality film "Space Station" narrated by Tom Cruise exists, it consists of compiled short edited clips none of which is longer than could be filmed aboard a vomit comet.

Although it orbits Earth sixteen times per day, there's no video of an entire half orbit of 45 min. that documents its quick passage from noon to midnight.

No image of ISS in silhouette against a brilliant night sky on dark side of Earth unless you count photoshopped one on my FB page.

>50 years of alleged use and no spacesuit nickel porous plate ice sublimator cooling system has been seen or photoed. No public demo of a spacesuit in a vacuum chamber on Earth has been documented. No heat transfer or thermo book even mentions ice sublimators.

ISS is another hoax.
