That's crazy. Like the poster on Roger's post said Cito meets IV...no flames involved but destruction to the Bank of America. I'm very glad no one was injured in the accident. I heard from a friend who was at the bank at the time of the accident that the guy who crashed his car only had one leg. I'd like to hear the rest of that story. Not IV interesting, but interesting none the less.

We don't know for sure what happened. But if a witness was illegally being coached and the judge was doing nothing about it, doesn't that demand action? Do you think all accused drunk drivers are guilty and should go to jail? What if you were accused of something and you saw a key witness being coached in your case? Right under the judge's nose? Judge Hill has a history of siding with law enforcement when law enforcement did something inappropriate. The legal system is only as good as we citizens are willing to hold it accountable.

Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird. ... Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird. Scanner Reports 6-25-12 |

Account my relatively good health and lack of grey hair to never having fathered children. I sometimes wonder if these dangers always existed and we never knew about them; or if in fact there is some kind of societal pandemic of serious mental illness. An important read, well done Dodger. To bolster a belief that perhaps these dangers always existed, I think these police scanner reports are a real public service to the community. Its amazing how much crime goes unreported in our local mainstream media: so as not to scare the tourists I guess, but ultimately to the endangerment of us all, resident and tourist alike.

The lake always being there and never drying up is manmade - it used to be a creek drainage to the ocean (Goleta Slough, Hendry's, Carp, are similar). Get the creek to flow again and let it flood and dry with the rainfall and problem will be solved. Of course there won't be this pretty little landmark next to the zoo for people to ride by and see the birds (when it doesn't smell like a giant farted). Humans still haven't learned that putting manmade things in places where water normally rules is going to ultimately be a problem.

To add to my last comment, I wonder why we are willing to endure so many man-made sounds that intrude in our lives: chainsaws, motorcycles, loud car stereos, construction equipment, late night parties, or rock concerts that one can hear for half a mile away, etc. It seems to me that if we could choose which ones we would like to get rid of first, Mockingbirds would be at the end of the list. But then again, I'm a bird lover that has had the privilege to meet so many birds up close, so I'm definitely prejudiced.

I love listening to Mockingbirds, even in the early morning hours. They used to nest at my residence for many years. Then there was a break of several years, so when I heard one again a couple or years ago, I was delighted. A few days later, I woke up to the alarm call of our female Kestrel "Kachina", (in captivity with us because of permanently damaged wing). She is smaller than most female kestrels, and her call is higher pitched and more rapid than other Kestrels'. I knew she was in trouble, and that I needed to find her quickly. She must have gotten out of her aviary. I ran out the door, following the sounds... They were made by our new Mockingbird, up by the street. He had rapidly acquired her call, and added it to his mate-attraction repertoire of sounds. I was greatly relieved when I found Kachina safe and sound in her aviary. I had a really good long laugh - once my adrenaline went down to normal. Another time, years ago, a then well-known local ballet dancer called me at 5 AM to demand that I immediately come over and remove the Mockingbird that had been keeping her awake. She also told me that she tried to call the SB Wildlife Care Network, but no one was answering (at 5AM). When I told her that there was nothing I could do and that they are a protected species, she hung up on me. Most bird species are in decline all around the world. Tolerance, compassion, and humor go a long way, folks.

@ OP: Checked back to see if anyone gave better advice. I see others have echoed my advice to contact property owner. I hope you are resolved now to take care of this problem. No one can get you out of this fix but yourself. You must tell property owner what you've had to put up with. You need to get on this ASAP. With summer vacation and longer days-----you are going to suffer more and more until you take charge and make up your mind to end this misery. Don't allow your bad neighbors to bully you any longer.

I don't think it's ok for parents to just shrug off the nuisance their kids might sometimes cause to other people out there in the world who DON'T happen to be parents. I am 30, married with no kids and I don't think it's fair for parents to say "Kids will be kids." My parents taught me to behave and respect all adults and ESPECIALLY taught me to not cause a ruckus while playing. A simple net would be useful and courteous. I don't think the OP should get made fun of for complaining about kids. Some of us made the conscious decision to NOT have kids but unfortunately it offends parents when you make it clear you don't want to hear the sounds of children playing. It's not for everyone! But misery loves company, I guess. LOL Hope that you can get the HOA on your side, OP! You're a renter and you & your doggy have the right to have all the peace and quiet you desire. you are not the one with the kids. Why should you have to suck it up? ;) We are all rooting for you, it seems.

People on the defensive re this town have either been here a short while or never been anywhere else in their life. It's like a rotten orange still on the tree, bright and beautiful on the outside but mouldy and hollow when you break it open. Santa Barbara was a beautiful place when we came here 50 years ago. We thought it resembled the South of France and Northern Itaty. Now it is a shadow of itself with an impossible main streat peppered with vagrants and suspiciou smells. The latter accompany one on a furher stroll on the side streets, and lurk in the parking lots all over town.

We had a problem with a always barking dog. She put something on the collar to make it stop barking, worked like a charm. Only she couldn't manage to put the collar on the dog all the time. My wife went over, the neighbor went psycho, we don't talk anymore. She does however manage to keep the dog quiet now. Turns out her husband had a baby with another women, so she had other concerns. Not that it gives you carte blache to be rude and inconsiderate.

SEEDLADY - Nope the good 'ol days of the flower fields in Lompoc are long gone thanks to Big E buying up most of the property on the western end of the valley and turning into ag. land. In the 60's and 70's here in the valley when the wind settled down the whole valley would fill with the scent of flowers... sad to say, it is no more. The top picture was taken above the Central and Floridale Ave. intersection looking South.

I don't think there's anything wrong with posting addresses. If that's what it takes to stop the problem, then so be it. In fact, I've often thought that there should be a website where people can report addresses for problem dogs so that those of us having to suffer through the barking can find each other, compare notes, and file joint complaints. Up until now, we've had to suffer and find ways to solve something that's definitely not our problem by finding ways to be "neighborly" and non-confrontationally confront our neighbors about barking. Well, that's ridiculous. The problem wouldn't be occurring in the first place if dog owners cared about how they affected other people. I mean, don't leave your dog outside unless you're 100% sure they don't bark. If you need to, pay for real training (ever see It's Me or the Dog on Animal Planet?) or hire a pet sitter.

Hate to break it to you 204, but sadly, many paid athletes in ALL sports dope. Cycling seems to be the ONLY sport that's serious about putting a stop to doping as evidenced by the myriad tests participants are subjected. This can't even be compared to the farce that the NFL, NBA & MLB supposedly put their players through. Look at all the "lifetime" bans numerous players in those have been handed down & yet the same offenders are always back. Hmmmm Get over it and let's get on with a great list of cycling flicks.

@170 - couldn't agree more. SB is a smoke and mirrors town. The tourist who come here, and the folks who haven't lived here very long, really don't know what this town is like. I've been here 11 years, but boy oh boy, has it changed... and not for the better. The main issue with SB is the never-ending transient eye-sore, smell-sore on State Street. Sure, this town has it's share of beautiful natural scenery, but it also has some not so pretty and smelly un-natural scenery.

Years ago a co-worker and her about one month old car had this happen. Her 8 year old son wanted to surprise Mommy by washing her car and used one of those green scrubbing pads. The only paint not ruined was the top which he couldn't quite reach. Insurance (less a deductible I'm sure) paid to have the whole car repainted. She said she really couldn't mad at him because his heart was in the right place.

Clay bar is a cleaner, not a polisher. You would need a heavy cutting compound followed by a light cutting/polishing compound. You basically need to remove a thin layer of paint and then polish it to a shine. The downside is that too generous a compound/elbow grease will remove the paint entirely. Then you are really in trouble. Contact a pro.

Then we'd make sure it was somewhere cool and dry till they became butterflies...you have to keep an eye on them or else you might end up with a dead butterfly :( I'm not sure if they'd get eaten because I'm pretty sure the markings on the caterpillar look that way cause they're poisonous, but it sure is fun to watch the transformation!

I did this once when I was a kid washing my stepfather's Buick. I couldn't get some blemishes off so used a scouring pad. Luckily he wasn't the type of guy to worry much about paint jobs- one car that needed painting, he just grabbed the nearest brush and gave it a thick coating. You could still see the brush strokes years later.

The Hotel Incentive Program which w... |
2012-06-25 10:06 AM |

This "Hotel Incentive Program" is a terrible idea. Carbajal wants to do something to bail out one of his major donors - Rick Caruso, and get his Montecito constituents off his back for continuing to allow the Miramar more extensions. If he had said no to the last extension, then Caruso would have had to begin construction - at least clear the site to maintain his permit. But he didn't do that. So now, Carbajal is pushing a COUNTY-WIDE ordinance as a response to Caruso's blackmail that he won't do anything to clear the site unless he gets this rebate. (Amazing what $15,000 in campaign contributions can buy). So now he wants to give big developers an incentive to develop hotels in unincorporated Santa Barbara County - so that's the Gavioa Coast, More Mesa, Santa Ynez Valley, Cojo-Jalama. Time to say NO.

I would go to a good body/detailing shop and get their recommnedations first before going any further. A professional might go after areas of the car that got more damaged quite differently than other areas with minimal damage. Also, they might have to do things to fix the window glass, headlight and tail light lenses and chrome trim pieces on the car differently than the painted areas of the body. A really scratch car could take several days of work from a detailer! Good Luck!

Heal the Ocean and Creaks is the reason it is like this.. Remember that this used to be open to the Ocean. The water used to enter and exit the "Pond" with High Tide.. Now the water is not allowed to leave as it is deemed unfit for our Water ways.. So when you interfere with nature you get a stinky mess.. This is the Fault of the City and County trying to Heal the Ocean and Creeks.. Open it back up so the water can get out and it will be fixed..

Nuisance is a Nuisance no matter how it happens.. This is a Nuisance case and you can sue them for all sorts of things if you can prove they are doing it over and over again.. I suggest you contact the Land owner and put them on notice.. The Tenants don't care, It will be the Land Lord that will care and should stop it.. IF they are causing a nuisance then you can get money damages from them for your pet and yourself. You have the Right to Peaceful enjoyment of your home.. Just like a loud party or music or a guy that revs his car to much in the garage. This is a nuisance and should be stopped.. If you have tried to talk to the Dad its time to move on to the Landlord. Send them a nice letter asking them to stop the Nuisance coming from there property.

the previous tenants in my house played soccer and often kicked the ball over the fence, or banged it against the fence. My neighbor would return the ball until this went on too long, then she started keeping the balls. Next she started hanging things from her fence and used 3-inch nails driven through the wood. So the balls kicked against the fence would go flat. They pretty much stopped kicking balls against the fence after that. For noise, the city wants to know if the noise if out of the ordinary for the environment. also most every home has something violating the zoning ordinances. Find out what their violations are and report them to zoning. If they want to ignore your concerns, give them other concerns to worry about. If Zoning enforcement is lax, email Jim Armstrong and the city council about the inaction and that usually gets a quick response.

They snowbird-it, moving around the west from their home base in Yuma, seeing as much as they can see. He is a real jack of all trades, can fix anything, can get along with and converse with almost anyone, board presidents to bikers; honest, resourceful and reliable. He puts the WORK in Work Camper. Nothing can replace the situation the resident rangers had, but the reality is that this can't be sustained now. I do wonder about the OP's assertion that he parks will be commericalized and trashed. What's wrong with deciding where you want to see it ahead of time and putting down a blanket? This signifies you are interested in watching the event, enough to drive downtown a day early and reserve your spot so you don't have to sit there for hours. Why should someone have to sit on State street for hours just because they enjoy parades? To some it is good fun and others a waste of time. There were still plenty of spots the night before. Don't get there at an hour early and expect as good a seat as someone who planned ahead and made a separate trip which took effort and forethought. Just in case, don't bring your most expensive blanket.

Original poster here again, with an update. We tried to move the bees into the new hive ourselves. The bees didn't care for the new box, or the less than graceful move, so they flew away. My son got in touch with Todd, mentioned in an earlier comment to this post. He helped us make our hive more attractive, but we still didn't have bees. Then he phoned and said that a friend of his had a swarm in his yard. He climbed a tree to get the queen and a large part of the swarm, and he brought them to us. Thank you Todd! They're just as gentle as our first bees, and they seem to like it here. The garden feels alive with bees around again. My son is keeping another world up to date on these hives via his blog. Search for woodenpig, blogspot and bees, and it will probably come right up.

They beat on the fence purposely and longer after being told to stop beating on it? On boy, your issues are less than the parents! I am sympathetic to you, no doubt. Truly, I wish I could help you, but it seems the parents are supporting their children and no matter the HOA, perhaps only the owner or the police will make this noise stop. There is little use for more polite routes like visiting again and again to plead for less noise disturbance or as the mentioned earlier HOA. You need strong authority. I'm not proselytizing here, but prayer is the strongest weapon man has and God always answers His children.

Write a letter to the owner describing situation re: persistent noise and state that you have met with the parent already to attempt resolution. State your dog’s condition and the date and time that you meet with the parent. Request that the owner install a sound suppressant wall or build the kids a back board. The owner will not like to receive complaints. Mention concern for fence wear and tear. Keep copies for your file. In the letter hint at a lawsuit, but don't threaten one. Keep all language neutral and to the facts. Request that the owner give a noise warning letter to the family. At the same time, talk to other neighbors and get them to sign a joint letter or petition re: disturbing the peace. Send copy to the owner. File a noise complaint and disturbing the peace complaint with the police dept., send copy to the owner. Hopefully if the police speak to the family and kids, the kids will play elsewhere. See if Legal Aid can help you.

I know they have been through a few already and a i know at least two were alcoholics/drug addicts. The reason I know this is because I'm very close to these ex-hosts. But i do know there are fantastic, smart, educated people as hosts and rangers out there, but it depends on the place and park and in this case we are talking toro canyon park and the surrounding area. .

amazingly clear shots, John. who needs a helicopter when you got slow flying airplanes? :) really, not surprised to see an SUV on it's side. there really should be weight and displacement tiers for your drivers license here just like in europe. as the gross weight and/or displacement of the vehicles engine goes up it should require more training and more fees for the driver.

There was a fender-bender in that area this morning. Typical lookie-loos were slowing down traffic because they had to see the damange done to the cars sitting on the side of the road.

CHP says a drunken wrong-way driver... |

i understand most wrong way drivers on the freeway drive in the fast lane believing in their drunken state that the center line is the road border. if i drive late at night i always drive in the slow lane. driving 280 one night in the bay area, a wrong way driver blew by me in the fast lane at speed. our closing speeds must have been close to 150. luckily i was in the slow lane. heart rate spiked bigtime.

I would not talk to the parents, I'd ask the kids, their parents probably have not even told them it is an issue. If you ask them directly and maybe give them some alternative that allows them to still have fun without 'scaring your dog' they might understand. Even bring your dog over to meet them, so they can be friend with your dog. Then ask them to do what they do with the fence noise while the dog is in their back yard, and let them see what it does to your dog. Bring a treat so you can let them give it to her to 'calm her down', when they feel like she is kind of 'their pet too' in a sense, maybe the natural kind nature of most kids will cause them to alter their behavior on their own. They can teach their parents something about this too. Good luck.

Eutrophication is not uncommon, and for those unfamiliar here is a link to the USGS definition of the term: http://toxics.usgs.gov/definitions/eutrophication.html Here are a number of very good (and not overly-technical) articles on the subject at the Stormwater magazine website: http://www.stormh2o.com/SW/Search.aspx?search=eutrophication Here is a link to the web site of the manufacturer of one of those "floating pumps" referred to above: http://www.solarbee.com/

Excellent advice Dodger. While at the parade this weekend it was hard not to notice just how many parents need to start heading Dodger's well articulated advice. I saw kids wandering all over the area. Yes, patents were nearby, I hope, but just one moment of inattentiveness will change these families lives forever. Degenerates are everywhere just waiting for the perfect moment to strike even in idyllic SB.

I see that all the time there, people are traveling smoking fast down the hill, round that last sweeping turn and the cars coming out of Paradise don't realize that traffic is moving, usually, much faster than 55mph. I see near misses at least a couple of times a month there.

...yard-a-pult! seriously, a net to catch the ball is a brilliant idea, I'd say suggest that. Kids are so caught up in having fun or relieving boredom or stress, they don't realize the effect of their play. You might investigate after school programs or get them interested in YMCA activities? Could you offer to take them, or get them a bus pass if Pop agrees? Maybe invite the Dad over so he can see and hear for himself? Best of luck on this. My neighbors' 2 rescue Labs had separation anxiety and barked and howled every 5 minutes all day till they came home. My husband was just retired and battling cancer, and it drove him nearly mad with frustration. His last days at home with hospice, they finally shut the dogs in the garage, after my sister in law, a no-nonsense ICU RN had a chat with them. People can get so tied up with their my castle, my kingdom attitude.

Wow. If the fence hasn't broken by now, then you are being intolerant and lame. Are you over 80? If you shot a garden hose over at my kids for any reason I would come over and mess your face up with a shovel. And your wussy dog. You should be embarrassed.

Well, not to be picky, but this accident appears to have been caused by one vehicle turning onto 154 from Paradise Road in front of another vehicle traveling on 154. You can't blame this one on the Casino. Pay attention people.

Great pics. Clearly an issue of circulation, as the brown water is least stagnant, closer to the outflow point. I agree that a few large scale oxygenation pumps are needed and I'd say fast. Put them at the perimeter areas where really green from algae bloom. Some aeration needs to go on year runs because yes, fertilizer is flowing in year round from properties, zoo manure, golf course effluent. When we have rains, I presume the blooms fade from flushing that occurs.

While I agree that approaching a neighbor can be risky or confrontational, it is still best to try this first. We have noisy people neighbors behind us (not kids or a dog, but adult humans), and we started by just saying, "hi". They gave us their phone number and email. While they haven't completely quieted down, at least we can try calling or emailing before calling the police (when their noise is especially disturbing, like at 3 am!) If you're afraid to contact them in person, leave a friendly note on their door, and let them know date and time when the noise was a problem, and why it was a problem (ie, kept my baby awake, or my ill husband). If you want them to act neighborly, then give it a shot by being neighborly to them first.
